2023.06.07 03:28 rjc537 Hoping for help with Print then Cut for text on a box template.
I keep cutting the individual letters rather than just my cut lines. It's text on a box template, and I've tried every trick, tip, and video I can find. I have no issues with Print than Cut images - so I imagine that this is user error, but I'm stumped. Details in words and screen shots in order of operation below.
-Box template from
https://www.templatemaker.nl/en/cardbox/ -I upload it, add it to canvas, convert the correct group to score lines
-I add an oval shape for a cut out and attach it
-I add a text box, change the font and color, size it and then flatten
-I attach the flattened text to the box, and start to make it
-Print out is perfect
-Scan is successful, scoring process is spot on
-The cut then begins and no matter what I do it cuts each letter ☹️
Near as I can figure, the issue is that the gridlines are visible behind the box on the canvas? But here's where I'm stuck - even if I add a square behind the box and attach that, I can't get it set up so that it doesn't just cut the square in addition to the box and the text. 🤦🏻♀️
I know this is a me issue - I'm the broken part of the process, LOL. Anyone willing to help a frustrated maker?

2023.06.07 00:41 Claytortise Quad on Delaware Lease Termination (IMPORTANT FOR ALL CURRENT/FUTURE QUAD RESIDENTS)
Hello everyone,
You may recall my post from a month or so ago about how to pressure the Quad into being held accountable for the unlivable conditions.
A family member of mine had a housing inspector they personally know do some poking around, and they drafted up a letter of Lease Termination. I also have a letter template for their generic response.
DM me if you’ve signed on to the Quad this year and would like to pull out. I’ll send you the letter and the details on how to submit it.
I sent the Quad these letters a few weeks ago to test the waters and they’ve since stopped responding, so I’d like to start putting the pressure on.
Please share this post with anyone you may know who signed on to the Quad and wants to pull out due to the uninhabitable conditions they’ve perpetuated.
Again, real change can only happen if enough people band together to put significant pressure on the Quad, so please, spread the word.
Thanks, and happy boycotting.

2023.06.07 00:36 BlueDimondDude We need to talk about Time Travel
From what I remember, There are 6 instances of Time-Travel in Supernatural.
- Dean attempting to prevent Azazael’s deal with Mary
- Stopping Anna from killing Mary
- Tracking and killing a Phoenix to defeat Eve
- Chronos Pulling Dean from Present Day Back in Time
- Henry and Abaddon's travel to the Present Day
- The Wish Pearl that brought John from 2003 to present day.
From what I understand about these instances, Time Travel in Supernatural follows three rules;
- Time is Fixed. Anything changed in the course of time will set off a chain reaction that will change the timeline.
- Certain aspects of Time travel are in the Fixed Timeline, meaning that there are times where Time Travel must occur to maintain the Fixed Timeline.
- Anyone that travels to a changed timeline from a disruption in the past will still hold their memory from the previous timeline.
The first two instances of Time travel involve Angelic Chronokinesis (Angel Time Travel). The first instance, Dean attempts to stop Azazel from reaching Mary and making a deal. However, in telling Samuel(Possessed by Azazel) about the big plan to open Hell’s Gates, he Practically ensures that Azazel will reach Mary. This follows rule B, as Dean’s involvement essentially ensured that Mary would make a deal. Though he tried to prevent the event by Killing Azazel, he instead set the entire event into motion by informing Azazel about the “Demon Children,” and how Sam would be the strongest of them.
The second instance involves Anna trying to Kill Mary to prevent Sam and Dean from being born. She is unsuccessful, as Michael and the other angels are able to interfere and kill Anna. This instance I like to leave up to the Apocalypse theory from Marvel’s Loki, in which all activity that would mess up the Timeline is negated if it would be unavoidably destroyed. I put these two instances under this theory because Michael ultimately wipes the minds of John and Mary, making them have no recollection of the Angels or Sam and Dean. This means that John and Mary would behave as if Time Travel never occurred, even though Dean ensured Azazel fed Sam demon blood, but whether that event is entirely Dean’s fault is up for debate, as there’s a chance that Azazel would’ve found Mary anyways.
Instance 3 involves Samuel Colt and killing a Phoenix. Samuel Colt wrote that he killed a phoenix the day Sam and Dean traveled to. We see this not to be the case, as Colt wouldn’t have hunted the Phoenix that afternoon. However, he recorded it as his kill, and collected the Phoenix ashes to mail to Sam and Dean in the future. This means the Phoenix’s death wouldn’t have occurred if Sam and Dean didn’t travel. This classifies this instance under rule B.
The next instance involves Chronos accidentally pulling Dean back in Time. There are a few instances in this episode that fall under Rule A. When Dean carved the message for Sam into the doorframe, the doorframe changed in the future, and Sam saw the message all of a sudden. However, I can't make out whether the SAM carving was always in the doorway, or only appeared as Dean carved it, much like the burning love option from Cursed Child. If the Carving was already in the doorway, then the instance would fall under Rule B, as the carving is reliant on the fact that Dean time travels. The second instance is when Chronos’s wife recalls Dean grabbing Chronos, and they both disappear, as a result of Sam’s summoning spell. She says all the clocks stopped at 11:34, which means that Dean and Chronos had already disappeared, despite Sam not performing the Spell yet. This means that Sam performing the summoning Spell was a fixed event in the timeline, and that Chronos and Dean WOULD travel back to the present, as they already had, by memory of Chronos's wife. If that didn’t make sense, imagine it like this.
Pulling a lever will make a lightbulb flash one hour prior to the lever being pulled. If I see the light flash, that means it is guaranteed that the lever will be pulled in one hour, and no resistance will stop the lever from being pulled, and the light flashes, meaning pulling the lever is guaranteed. This is an example of a fixed event, something we see if the Dr. Strange episode of What If?
This was by far the most sophisticated Time episode. It gets easier from here.
The next instance involves Henry Winchester. According to John’s memory, his dad disappeared one day, and never returned. And despite their effort to look for him in the Winchesters TV show, Henry’s whereabouts remain a mystery for John. We find out this is because Henry traveled to the future and died, so he never returned to his old timeline. Despite Henry traveling to the future, the timeline never changed. I like to pair this theory to Back to the Future 2, as influencing future events will only change the future, as the past has already occurred at that point in time. This example is preventing Marty’s son from being arrested, as the only thing that changed is which young delinquent was detained that day. This is another example of a fixed travel, in which the travel had to occur to set up certain aspects of the timeline. In this example, if Henry had never time traveled, John would’ve grown up with a loving father, likely wouldn't have enlisted into the marines, and therefore never met Mary afterwards. This would also mean that Sam and Dean would have never obtained the Bunker key, and the American Men of Letters would still be buried in the ground. The same rule applies to Abaddon, who had to have traveled, as she disappeared in 1958, and had to have appeared in present day, or Dean wouldn’t have gone searching for the Mark, leaving Amara in Cain’s disciplined arm.
However, all of this logic is slightly different in the next Time Travel instance.
When Dean used the Magic pearl to obtain his greatest desire, it pulled John Winchester from 2003 to 2018. Despite traveling to the future, John’s disappearance in 2003 disrupted the Timeline, which all went back to normal when John returned to 2003, with no memory of his jump to the future. Here's the tricky part. If Sam and Dean grew up to be hunters, then that means that John returning to 2003 was an absolute event. If John didn’t return, then the timeline would be disrupted. We see this occur, when Sam talks about Kelp on talk shows, and never goes through with hunting. However, the disruption in the timeline shouldn’t have occurred unless John wasn’t going to return to 2003, even though he should’ve as Sam and Dean grew up to be hunters. If John’s return to 2003 wasn’t a fixed event, then the disruption in the timeline would’ve become the fixed time, and we would’ve seen Sam Winchester on talk shows about healthy supplements. However, John’s return is Inevitable, as the boys grow up to be hunters. Going by this logic, when John initially traveled from 2003 to 2018, then the time disruption shouldn’t have occurred, as John would’ve ultimately returned to 2003. If the trip back to 2003 was a fixed event, then the disruption shouldn’t have happened. Only factor I am not accounting for is the fact that John lost his memory of the jump to the future, but I’m not sure how this would correlate with fixed events.
If anyone has any suggestions, input or correction on any of the instances, please share. If there's something I'm not accounting for or missing in any of the Time Travel instances, your input is greatly appreciated.

2023.06.06 21:43 BillyBraggsArse Solicitor demanding payment for shoddy work. What do I do ?
Posting on behalf of a friend without a Reddit account.
Divorce lawyer wants to charge £3500 despite never sending a single letter!
Divorce Solicitor was hopeless, now wants to charge £3500 when no letters were actually sent!!!
I went to a local Solicitors firm to deal with my Divorce (England). After several interactions, I was so disappointed with the practice that I informed them I didn't wish to proceed with them representing my interests. At that point, no documents had been sent to my wife and no court proceedings undertaken.
I have a bill for £3500, which I wind bewildering and I NEED HELP to fight the invoice based on poor service. Can anyone out there help me please? I've found a new solicitor who is very good but can't afford to pay the old solicitors invoice, especially as the work was poor quality (multiple letters that were wrong)
I protest the invoice on the basis that:
• The work carried out was of poor quality and I had to correct multiple letters twice. These corrections were both factual and grammar.
• The documents are ‘standard templates’ yet i have been charged £350 per letter and £80 per email received / sent. This is not inline with the charge card.
No letters were sent to my wife and no court engagement.
The original agreement was a fixed cost £1000 + VAT for divorce and open ended for Financial settlement but with £1000 advisory updates.

2023.06.06 21:25 Emoryian The haunting wooden doe
My first memory of losing something takes me back many years. I was still a kid, around 5 or maybe 6 years old. Back then, I enjoyed collecting little wooden toy animals. I had one particular favorite. Perhaps the reason I liked it so much was not because it was prettier than the others, but simply because I kept losing it. Despite being young and easily distracted, I vividly remember what happened.
I was playing on the floor of my room with the other little wooden figures when suddenly, I froze in place. There it was, lying right next to the leg of the chair, the little doe looking exactly as I remembered it. I eagerly picked it up, still unable to believe my eyes, and immediately included it in my game.
I was overjoyed, at least until I turned my head for a moment in the opposite direction. When I looked back to where I had left the doe, it was gone.
It may sound naive and silly, but even back then, I knew there was something strange about the whole situation. I searched every nook and cranny of my room, desperate to find it. However, it was nowhere to be found. I felt a sense of despair as if someone was playing a prank on me, deliberately hiding my toy.
I hadn't thought about this incident for years, and it had become deeply buried in my memory. It likely wouldn't have resurfaced if something hadn't happened to remind me of that day.
Now, at the age of 23, I live alone in a secluded town. I prefer tranquility and birdsong over the constant noise and hectic pace of city life. I have a cozy little house all to myself, the kind I had always dreamed of. It's a two-story house with two bedrooms, two bathrooms, a kitchen, a living room, and a spacious garden filled with various flowers and peaceful corners where I can fully dedicate myself to work or reading.
On one of those quiet afternoons, I was reading a book on the sofa in my living room, accompanied by music playing from the record player. Suddenly, the record started screeching, producing unbearable sounds. I quickly jumped up and halted its spinning.
"I concentrate better in silence anyway," I thought to myself as I returned to my seat.
But then, something caught my eye. I'm not entirely sure how I noticed it, but there was a small part of something sticking out from behind the leg of the small table where I kept the record player. I bent down and picked it up. The moment I laid eyes on the little wooden doe, I recognized it. A wave of confusion washed over me, and I shivered.
"What are you doing here?" I wondered aloud. Could it have been tucked away somewhere in my belongings when I moved? That seemed unlikely, as I would have noticed it much sooner.
I went back to the couch, sat down, and continued to gaze at the toy. I knew it was the same one, without a doubt. It couldn't be a mere look-alike. I ran my fingers over its surface, feeling its texture once again—exactly as I remembered.
Was this some kind of prank? But I hadn't shared this story with anyone. Not a single soul.
I stared at the toy, unable to make up my mind to call someone. Suddenly the silence that filled the room didn't seem soothing to me but instead instilled fear and tension. I twirled the toy nervously in my hands until my eyes landed on something. Its stomach was carved with letters, perhaps signs. I didn't recognize them, I had never seen anything like them. And I was almost prejudiced that they were missing before.
I couldn't tear my eyes away from those strange markings on the wooden doe's stomach. They seemed to form a pattern, a language that was unfamiliar to me. It sent a shiver down my spine, and an unsettling feeling washed over me.
Curiosity got the better of me, and I decided to investigate further. I reached for my phone, ready to snap a few pictures of the carvings, hoping that someone might recognize the symbols and provide some insight into their meaning. But as I held my phone up to take the pictures, suddenly the lights turned off.
The room was plunged into darkness, and I felt a chill crawl up my spine. I didn't realize how fast it got dark outside. Goosebumps formed on my arms, and an eerie silence settled in the air. Fear gripped me, but I couldn't bring myself to move. I was paralyzed, consumed by a sense of dread.
And then, the silence was shattered by a soft, haunting melody that seemed to emanate from nowhere and everywhere at once. The music was mournful, like a dirge, and it sent shivers down my spine. I could feel the weight of an unseen presence in the room, its presence heavy and oppressive.
Trembling, I fumbled for my phone, desperately trying to turn on the flashlight. But no matter how many times I pressed the power button, the screen remained dark. Panic rose within me as I realized that I was trapped in the darkness with whatever unseen entity had invaded my home.
The haunting melody grew louder, filling every corner of the room. Shadows danced and twisted, taking on grotesque forms that seemed to reach out toward me. I tried to scream, to call for help, but my voice failed me. It was as if an invisible force had stolen my ability to utter a sound.
Amid the chaos, my gaze was drawn back to the wooden doe clutched tightly in my hand. Its eyes seemed to glow with an otherworldly light, and for a brief moment, I could have sworn I saw movement within the tiny carved figure. It was as if the doe was alive, pulsating with an energy that was both mesmerizing and terrifying.
With a surge of desperation, I hurled the wooden doe away from me, hoping to break free from whatever curse it held. But as soon as it left my hand, the room fell silent. The oppressive presence vanished, and the darkness lifted, replaced by the soft glow of the lights.
I was left alone in the room, shaken and breathless. As I looked at the floor, I realized that the doe was no longer there. It has vanished once more.
I was relieved, thankful that the toy was gone.
But I don’t think it ever really was. Every night when I close my eyes that melody starts playing again, it becomes everything to me, leaving me unable to fall asleep. I'm uncertain if my sleepless nights are the cause of the increased instances of losing my belongings, but I have noticed a definite rise in such incidents following the event.
I'm afraid that over time, I might not only lose my belongings but also my mind.

2023.06.06 21:16 clutchdeft Ineligibility of newly installed member could invalidate Oklahoma board vote on Catholic school sponsorship
https://tulsaworld.com/news/local/ineligibility-of-newly-installed-member-could-invalidate-oklahoma-board-vote-on-catholic-school-sponsorship/article_f71f83c6-0478-11ee-93a2-bb85100c09e0.html Monday’s national headline-making vote to give state sanctioning and Oklahoma taxpayer dollars to a Catholic school may have been invalid.
It turns out the state Attorney General’s Office believes Oklahoma City businessman Brian Bobek is ineligible to serve on the Statewide Virtual Charter School Board until November.
But an email to that effect was not received by the board’s chairman and executive director until after Bobek
cast the deciding vote Monday to approve state sponsorship for St. Isidore of Seville Catholic Virtual School.
If opened, it will be the nation’s first religious charter school.
Long-serving member Barry Beauchamp, a retired school superintendent from Lawton who had been allowed to continue serving after his term expired some months ago, was
replaced abruptly on Friday by Oklahoma House Speaker Charles McCall.
Less than a half hour before Monday’s special board meeting began at noon, Deputy Attorney General Niki Batt sent an email to board Chairman Robert Franklin and Executive Director Rebecca Wilkinson that stated because Beauchamp had not vacated his seat, the law that created the Statewide Virtual Charter School Board only allows Bobek to take over the seat in November.
Franklin said if Bobek was ineligible, his vote was invalid.
He is also concerned that a lengthy, written statement Bobek read during Monday’s meeting, which included numerous legal citations, could have influenced the votes of other board members including Scott Strawn, who was recently appointed to the board by Gov. Kevin Stitt.
“It basically says he shouldn’t even be seated,” Franklin said. “My response is I think his vote should be vacated. Therefore it (the vote) was 2-2 and was voted down. Strawn said, ‘I’m with Brian on his constitutional alignment concerns.’ He (Bobek) shouldn’t have been seated in the seat, he shouldn’t have been able to say what he said, based on what the Attorney General’s Office opinion is."
The Tulsa World obtained the correspondence from the AG’s Office through a public records request. The email was timestamped 11:34 a.m. Monday.
Batt first quoted directly from state statute that created the current Statewide Virtual Charter School Board: "'Members shall serve until their successors are duly appointed for a term of three (3) years. Appointments shall be made by and take effect on November 1 of the year in which the appointment is made.'"
Later in the letter she wrote: “Indeed, it is my understanding that Mr. Beauchamp requested to be reappointed and was only made aware of his replacement on the afternoon of (Friday) June 2, 2023. Mr. Beauchamp’s continued service demonstrates that there was not a vacancy to warrant the immediate placement of Mr. Bobek on the Board. Accordingly, it is my opinion that pursuant to 51 O.S. § 15, Mr. Beauchamp should continue serving until his successor, Mr. Bobek, is duly qualified on November 1 pursuant to the provisions of 70 O.S. § 3-145.1(B).”
But Franklin and Wilkinson have told their fellow board members they did not see the email, which was forwarded to all on Tuesday morning, until after the public meeting ended about 4:20 p.m. on Monday.
“My first thought was ‘Boy, that’s gonna open a can of worms!’” said board member Bill Pearson of Oologah. “It appears to me on the surface that he was an invalid voter yesterday. If I was a betting man, I would bet this vote will be challenged.”
Contacted Tuesday morning, Chairman Franklin of Tulsa said he is mystified why Batt didn’t vocalize her new concerns during the public meeting.
He noted that Batt spoke at length and in great detail about her office’s contention that a government-sponsored private Catholic school would be unconstitutional and strictly prohibited under Oklahoma statute, as well as her concerns that the school’s proposed governing board would not be independent from church elders.
Oklahoma church leaders and lawyers from the Notre Dame Law School Religious Liberty Initiative Clinic who helped them view St. Isidore as a test case to challenge separation of church and state laws across the nation.
They argue that charter schools are private and therefore, the Catholic church should not be barred from obtaining charter school sponsorship and funding on the grounds of religion.
Batt also sounded the alarm that the board’s standard, take-it-or-leave-it sponsorship contract, which is in place with six existing online charter schools, could become unenforceable because it would have to have its requirements related to non-sectarian school operations carved out for St. Isidore.
“It was an error in why that wasn’t brought to the light of the day at the forefront of the meeting, rather than in an email not seen until after the meeting,” Franklin said on Tuesday. “I don’t think there was anything underhanded, I just think it was an oversight that, in the rearview mirror, has major consequential questions.”
What will be done about it?
Phil Bacharach, spokesman for Attorney General Gentner Drummond, responded: “The Attorney General has consistently maintained that a vote of approval is unconstitutional and not supported by current Oklahoma law. He will carefully weigh all available options before taking any action.”
Asked why Batt did not email the entire board, Bacharach said a memo sent only to the executive director and chairman is how the AG’s Office “typically responds” to queries.
Whether or not Bobek was personally advised that he was ineligible to serve or vote drew this response: “No. The Attorney General’s Office provides legal counsel to the Statewide Virtual Charter School Board, not to potential members before they are sworn in.”
However, House Speaker Charles McCall was notified Monday by the state’s top law enforcement office that his new appointee is ineligible to serve until November.
Daniel Seitz, spokesman for the Oklahoma House Republican Caucus, defended Bobek’s last-minute appointment to the board.
“The speaker was simply filling an expired term,” he said Tuesday. “At no point was there any conversation about how Bobek would vote on something or any litmus test. The speaker gets recommendations from members of the (GOP) caucus and makes appointments.
“As far as the attorney general goes, they haven’t come out and given any official opinion. I think that was a courtesy letter. I don’t think that carried the weight of law. Those two things are very different when it comes to the weight they carry.”
Franklin, who voted “no” on the St. Isidore application, said he resents that the Statewide Virtual Charter School Board finds itself in the position of having the eligibility of a member and validity of its votes called into question after seven months of review work on the St. Isidore application.
“Why on earth would they do this?” he said of McCall’s last-minute appointment. “It looks like a very clumsy, elementary political move. But I don't think it was clumsy — I think it was very intentional. They had to know what it would look like. That’s why I asked Mr. Bobek yesterday, ‘Don’t put us in the position of looking like we’re a political conduit.’ Here we find ourselves today in that position.”
At the conclusion of Monday’s meeting, Franklin announced that he intends to resign from the board.
Asked about the timeline for that on Tuesday, Franklin clarified that he only meant that he does not intend to continue his board service when the Statewide Virtual Charter School Board is abolished because of a new state law.
Senate Bill 516, which was just signed into law by Gov. Stitt on Monday, will do away with the board come 2024 and create a new governing board with expanded authority over all charter schools.
Ironically, SB 516 states: “A charter school shall be nonsectarian in its programs, admission policies, employment practices, and all other operations. A sponsor may not authorize a charter school or program that is affiliated with a nonpublic sectarian school or religious institution.”
Pearson, who was appointed by Speaker McCall a few months ago, differed from Bobek by voting “no” on the St. Isidore application.
Asked whether he had made anyone aware of his position before Monday’s meeting, Pearson said no.
“When I was appointed, I had no clue what was going on with St. Isidore. All I was ever asked was do I believe in school choice? It took a lot of time to read up on the subject and review the application. I’m a strong conservative, and if you are a true conservative, you believe in the rule of law.
Then he added: “I’m all for school choice, but if you want secular schools, you have to change the laws.”
Bobek has not responded to a Tuesday morning email from the Tulsa World seeking comment.

I had repelled five Arxur raids while in control of the bridge. My crew were brave enough to trust me and my insane methods. Letting a colony world fall was unacceptable in my eyes. We were the vigilant, always ready to warp in ten minutes or less. The federation as whole didn't seem to understand how much value a few extra minutes bought for the settlers meant. Even if I had to order a retreat, tens of thousands would survive because they managed to find a place to weather the raid while the Arxur were distracted.
I was a hero.
Rumbling laughter and howls make my slow trod falter, and I look though a window into the recreational room. There's several humans at a table holding scraps of paper and barking in a jovial mood. They're not masked, and my feathers ruffle looking at them. A flicker of movement on the table catches my eye, and I finally spot the Dossur in their midst, almost completely hidden in a bunker of coins.
A Dossur beating an entire group of pack predators by himself. I never would've believed it, but I'm still not surprised it would be Alvin of all people. That little runt was the only reason I've managed to hold onto my sanity for so long. He was braver than I, and he brought me back even when I was at my worst, again and again and again. He was the first to run to our predatory saviors back at the facility. And he was the last to leave, running back into the fighting and leading a human doctor to me to stop the stray bullet from taking me into Inatala's grace.
I left him to his card game, faintly overhearing one of the humans complain about being a several years running Texas Holdem champion. Alvin's response sounded very much like him, asking if he wanted to bet the actual crown next to add to his growing wealth.
Eventually I found myself in front of a door. Inside was a small room. One wall contained a wooden desk carved with enough craftsmanship to rival old Krakotl wood carvers. The desk was cluttered with cylinders and writing apparatuses, and a primitive writing board resting on the wall above it displayed several print outs of various people. Relatives. Descendants. People that had enough empathy in them to take back the few lucky souls that still had people they could trust. The computer underneath it was not active, but if it where I'd imagine there would be encrypted communication logs trying to reconnect with those few love ones. Plans to reunite them. Promises to protect them under this faction's umbrella.
It was strange, that this group of humans wasn't desired by the rest of their kind. They take more direct, brutal action than their leaders, but they act to save lives. On the opposite wall was a locker. Inside were several firearms of Human make, and multiple emergency atmospheric suits. Many were for human use, but some were Federation standard. A pair of boots and engineering equipment rested on the floor before it, scuffed and well worn. There's a strange logo of an orange planet on the back of a jacket hanging from a hook nearby, and an even stranger article of cloth called an 'arm band.' The arm band has a large tree sewn into it, flanked by two prey animals and a river. The human I'm visiting was part of that arm band group, named after a tree of all things.
You couldn't get me to harbor a guess as to why they'd name themselves after a tree.
The far wall was rather simple. A faded green paint coat, covered in various anti-predator posters. One was of a human in a blue space suit, the visor open and revealing an endless pit of teeth. Another depicting a feral, over-proportioned human salivating over a dressed, screaming krakotl on a dinner plate. A third poster depicted some venlil collared and chained in place, stuck in some multi-colored wrapping that went up its legs halfway.
There was a mirror beside the posters, and I winced at the terrible shape I was in. I'd abused myself too much after I was freed. Even after stopping, I was still recovering. Looking past the mirror, there is a large banner of a green Terran letter. A few paper photos are plastered around it of smiling humans in strange places, and my eye always lingers over those photos despite the many times I've seen them. Earth looked lovely. I wished Kalsim had called off his mission.
Feeling like an intruder, I turned my attention to the last part of the wall. A set of black out curtains were flush with it, concealing a human roost built into the structure itself. If I was lucky, she would be there.
"Hope?"
Come on, you're better than a chicken. Carefully, I lifted the curtain. "Hope?"
There she was. The one human I wasn't bothered by on this station. I can hear the music playing now that the curtain is out of the way, and the thick visor over her eyes tells me she's watching a video or simulation of some kind. I hesitate, watching her in her own world. What fur she does have is short and remarkably dense, and she has such a unique coloration that I would swear she was one of a kind if she hadn't mentioned having family. A tan complexion, painted over by splotches and stripes of white and violets that humans can't see with their own eyes. Her face is relaxed, mouth slightly open in wonder.
The human that helped staunch my bleeding, and gently broke the news to me of
everything that had happened while I was locked up. The same one that kept me from pulling myself apart immediately after, and tried to find a way to keep me busy as my whole world went up in flames. A stern, capable person that could make decisions under pressure and wanted to save lives. While not a leader, I could see it in her. She had mettle.
She was completely exposed. Had I been the old me and not the one that woke up in a PD cell after a Sillis conference, I might've followed Kalsim's path. A talon in the right spot, and humans die fast.
"Hope?" Even raising my voice, she didn't hear me right in front of her. "Hope!"
As much as I respected her, coming this far in my state was exhausting. I, being a former fleet captain, hero, and outstanding Federation officer, decidedly acted like a child in that moment and pecked her.
"AAAAAAAH!"
"
AIIIIIIIIIEEEEE"
I let out the most undignified shriek in my life and fell over backwards, landing on my tail feathers and sending a jolt up my spine. I forgot that since Hope was human, by extension she could be loud. Really, really, unfathomably loud.
There was a blur of limbs and Hope was sitting up, visor wielded as a bludgeon. She made eye contact with me, and I realized all my remaining feathers had poofed up.
"
Blu!" She scolded, face curling in frustration. "What in the matter is-
Blu?! You're not in your room?"
Shock, this time. I felt some shame in how low my standards had fallen, and smoothed down my feathers properly. My poor heart was already recovering and I stood, puffing out my chest.
"I... I wanted to go for a walk. See what you humans could do with a dated station like this."
"You're in my room."
"That appears to be the case." I pushed a ball of dust across the floor with a talon and regarded it absently, turning my head and keeping an eye on Hope. "It needs cleaning."
With speed I was anticipating, she hurled a pillow at me. I caught the assault and rerouted it, catching her in the face. She leaned back and laughed, a noise that calmed what was left of my quaking heart as I hopped forward. She offered a hand that I accepted, and she helped pull me onto the edge of the bed.
"You offered to show me your skies." I began, feeling uncertain. "Is that possible?"
"Yeah," she said. "Here-"
Grace put a hand on my chest and pushed down. A profound sense of horror washed over me as my back hit the soft bedding.
She wouldn't- no. She can't- is it even- when have I last- Inatala please- I realized with a start that Hope leaned past me, grabbing her pad. She plugged an odd attachment into it and fastened it to the wall by her head, and flopped over beside me. My immediate terror faded into embarrassment, and my face warmed at my own stupidity as she pulled the curtain closed. It became dark, and I felt her shift slightly until the ceiling above us started to slowly glow. Her pad booted up and began to project an image up there, and I felt my initial problems fade as a blue sky opened up before us.
"Oh wow." I breathed, realizing it was a video as a plane flew overhead. I forgot myself for a moment, looking up into an alien sky as clouds blew by at a lazy pace. The jet stream slowly lost its uniformity and stretched out, facing away as other clouds replaced it. I could hear wind and alien birds chirping, and for a long moment I was there. I was really there.
Storm clouds, massive weather fronts, all began drifting by. There was a dull rumble of thunder. I started as a bird flew very close overhead.
"What was that?"
"Woodpecker. Some can get pretty big back home. Not as big as you, Blu."
"Is it really this serene? Where was this taken?"
"My backyard. There was a massive hill out back. I used to lay there for hours when I was younger. Lived at the edge of a village. The only noise back there was the odd combustion engine or farming drone. Sometimes someone firing off a gun or listening to music loudly."
"You lived in the countryside? You're a pilot!"
Hope chuckled softly. "Surprise! There's some pretty sharp people that don't live in the cities, Blu. Especially us humans. My father could repair any farm equipment you threw at him going back a hundred years. Of course, I also have an uncle that thinks the Queen of England doesn't exist, so it probably levels out." She finished, sighing and reaching up. She swiped her finger across the ceiling and suddenly the skies changed.
They were orange now. More clouds. I felt a familiar pang in my chest thinking of a Nishtal sunset, but I kept quiet as the skies gradually changed. I was surprised to see such a vibrant shade of orange, then a sharp streak of violet bleed into it. There was red as well. A lot of red.
"Why red?"
"Oh, that. Massive forest fire in Canada. That's a country above mine. The smoke changed the colors for a little while. It made for a nice view."
That it did. I got lost in the footage, and started losing track of time. Only the occasional creak of the bedding kept me from forgetting where I really was. Hope seemed content watching the skies, and it dawned on me how close I was to her.
I'm acclimating well. Maybe I'll be like Alvin in no time. When the skies slowly turned to night I was amazed at the stars that came out. Constellations I was unfamiliar with, patterns and swirls of light that could never be seen from a Federation city. I heard Hope inhale and reach out, changing the scene before it could linger anymore. "How about a time lapse. I've got some good ones."
"I don't know what that is."
"Really? Someone sets up a camera in a nice spot and records hours or days of footage. They take everything they've documented and then speed it up to a couple minutes." Hope starts a new video. I'm taken back by it, how a cloud bank flows around a mountain pass like water. It looks like a stream, where the clouds shift with each wind current change, flowing back and forth as minutes are turned into seconds.
It's stunning. Hope switches to another one, and another. I'm struck dumb with wonder, baffled at how not one other creature out of the hundreds of species thought to do anything similar over the course of the Federation. Massive mountain tops, where humans blur through trails like plasma. Prairies with storm cells moving in, lighting and rain sweeping through and giving it new light as the terrain is rapidly drenched. A large road where thousands of human vehicles streak by and leave brief paint trails in their wake.
"Thank you, Hope."
She nods, an odd gesture of acknowledgement, before changing the video back to a more slow paced skyline. After several minutes of silence, I feel a weight forming in my chest. Slowly, my wonder begins to crumble.
"How many confidants were you able to find? For the others?"
Hope shifted to look at me, turning her head and making my feathers tingle slightly at how close her face was to me. She looked back up at the sky. "Seven."
"There were forty that wanted to leave as quickly as they could. What happens to them?"
"We're letting them go. Even if they don't want anything to do with predators, they're going to find out avoiding my species is pretty hard. We're going to give them access to the network anyways, in case they want our help down the road."
"And the rest of us?"
"I'm helping the ones that want to go back to a somewhat normal life find that. There's several planets they can go to, and countless colonies. They'll be placed close to the support network in case there's trouble and they need to come back, or need financial assistance or help integrating."
Hope had mentioned something about 'shelters being a safe place' for us break outs, but had never elaborated on that.
"And what about the others that want to stay?" I noticed Hope scowl at the skies, her face forlorn.
"The ones that want to stay and help us fight are welcome to. It's not all dangerous- being part of the network isn't as risky. Helping the ones that wanted to go back to living, or finding others that got lost or fell through the cracks. It... it feels wrong asking anyone we rescued to fight and die for us. We don't want clouded judgement and people thinking they owe us that. But, there are a lot wanting to join our ranks in more aggressive operations. We're making them combat ready, teaching them how we wage wars so that they don't turn into their overseers."
I lay there for a long moment, staring at the open skies above us. "What about me?" I asked quietly.
"You're not excluded from those choices, Blu."
"You read my file. You know who I was. What I would've done if I didn't end up in that place. You'd really just let me go?"
"If you wanted to go, then yes."
The simple way in which she states it confused me. Like such a choice wouldn't cause issues or risks.
"But, we've been thinking about a better choice for you."
Oh? "The Mazics are turning into the next Paltan Combine. Their newest influx of refugees were the released Krakotl."
My chest tightens. Nishtal is no more, razed to the bedrock and dead. We had been abandoned by our neighbors, our home slaughtered well before our true nature was revealed. And in the same year, the Federation deploys over forty thousand ships to take back a world that left behind their rule. Billions of loyal citizens captured and destined for a bloody fate were worth less than billions that seceded peacefully.
And then the humans brokered a deal with the Arxur and saved their souls. This was yet another time they did the impossible.
"We were thinking they could use a strong anchor to roost against. Someone that they might remember. A leader that they can trust."
I turned my head to directly face Hope, but she was still looking at the skies.
"I... they hate you humans."
"They do."
"I can't try and lead them, and sell out anyone that still doesn't believe in the UN's cause. I can't betray them." I chirped, dread worming into my gut.
"We wouldn't expect you too. We don't want you too. Blu-" Hope turned her gaze on me, her voice sincere. "We want them to find the right path. They deserve peace and security. They don't deserve to live in fear and rot with hatred. We don't... my group does not want yours to suffer over what your government did, even if the masses supported it at the time. We think you can lead them to a better future, where this hell can have a chance to heal and fade."
She looked back up at the artificial sky above us. "You don't even have to talk to us again if you choose this. If you do your best to ensure your species can coexist with mine, that would be more than we could ever hope to see happen."
"You think that's possible? That I could get that far? It seems so far away."
Hope bared her teeth in a smile. "You're more than capable. You love your people with everything you have, Blu. They'll see that. They'll believe in you. When you stand firm for your people, they'll follow you, too. We'll help where we can- peacefully. This can happen, I know it."
I found myself looking up at Earth's sky once again, apprehensive above this new burden. There was no way I would turn this down. If the Wolverines thought it was possible, then it was possible. A future where my people were both free in body and spirit was one I would fight for until my weary body gave out.
"How do we start?"

2023.06.06 19:39 DiggingLake The End of an Era
Kalutum sat watching, deep in thought, as Nikkal-sa played with her favourite toy in the courtyard. Startled by the sound of soft footsteps behind her, she turned to see Ishi-ba staring mournfully at the toddler happily babbling away at the intricately carved ivory envoy. "He's gone."
The softly spoken words seemed to hang in the air momentarily, the weight of the sorrow and meaning behind them like a vacuum sucking the oxygen out of any attempted reply. "Did he..."
Kalutum didn't manage to finish her sentence as the grief-stricken eyes turned to face her, but Ishi-ba answered nonetheless. "No."
He stopped, barely containing a sob, before continuing. "He was barely able to move, let alone speak. He shouldn't have died like that, helpless and unable to even control his bowels. Nobody should, but especially not him."
Kalutum swiftly rose and embraced her husband, as the last remnants of his composure began to slip. They had held each other like this for a few minutes, Ishi-ba letting himself be comforted by his wife's calm embrace, before he felt a slight tugging on his left hand side. Turning to look, he saw a small child offering up a brightly painted toy, a look of concern on her young face. "Don't be sad, Dada."
Accepting the gift, Ishi-ba watched as Nikkal-sa went back to play with her toys. Kalutum, spotting the anguished look, took pity on him. "I'll tell her. Don't worry."
Nodding gratefully towards her, Ishi-ba finished regaining his composure before gathering himself and looking directly at her. "I need to let them know. Far better they hear it from family than end up hearing it second-hand from some stranger."
Kalutum paused in thought momentarily, as if weighing options up, before nodding. "Ok. You should go send the messages now, though: news will travel fast."
She turned again to gaze at Nikkal-sa once more, playing in the garden in blissful ignorance, as the sounds of Ishi-ba's swift footsteps faded away behind her.
Action Summary - Ishi-ba sends a letter to Shumi-ba, informing him of his father's death and requesting he make haste to attend the funeral.
- Ishi-ba sends a letter to Semirami-sa, informing her of her father's death and requesting she make haste to attend the funeral.

2023.06.06 19:04 Moore_Attuned_Ed How to proofread your own fiction
Here's some tips I use when proofreading.
- Keep a style sheet!
This can be as extensive as you like, but recording certain decisions as you go along (or better yet, before you get to writing) is a cornerstone to consistency.
Do you use while/whilst, among/amongst? (While narration should be consistent, keep in mind that characters’ dialogue may differ.)
Spaced en dashes or unspaced em dashes?
-rnt or -elled spellings? Smelt or smelled?
Record these down and consult the style sheet as you write.
Want a template for one? Go ahead and scroll down on my blog post (link in comments) and click on that massive orange button near the end to get two copies, one with dropdown menus and one without.
- Searching for consistency.
When you come across a word that has multiple spelling variations (or two words that can be closed up, hyphenated, or left apart), run a search for its variant.
Of course, check the usage of compound adjectives – if it’s being used before the noun the hyphens are needed: I have a part-time job versus my job is part time.
Let’s say you come across wellbeing. Run a search for well-being and if that pulls up results, inconsistency is afoot! Run another search for both to see which one is the majority usage, then replace the other with it.
- Give it some distance!
This goes for any kind of editing, not just proofreading. Once you’ve finished writing, leave it alone for a day or two, refresh your mind, and come back to it later.
Resetting your mind like this will make you better at finding those errors because the brain gets complacent among familiarity and skips what it thinks is there.
Taking a refresher combats this.
- Read slowly!
It can be tempting when proofreading to read at your leisure pace.
But this is a sure-fire way to skim straight past those things that the brain interprets as correct but isn’t – form instead of from, dependant instead of dependent.
- Change the font!
I use and recommend Verdana as it’s a sans serif font (no extra strokes at the ends of letters) and has good spacing between each letter.
This makes it far easier to spot mistakes.
I hope this is useful! :)

2023.06.06 17:39 arbrown83 Should r/Patriots join in on the June 12th-14th protest of Reddit's API changes that will essentially kill all 3rd party Reddit apps?
What's going on?
A recent Reddit policy change threatens to kill many beloved third-party mobile apps, making a great many quality-of-life features not seen in the official mobile app permanently inaccessible to users.
On May 31, 2023, Reddit announced they were raising the price to make calls to their API from being free to a level that will kill every third party app on Reddit, from Apollo to Reddit is Fun to Narwhal to BaconReader.
Even if you're not a mobile user and don't use any of those apps, this is a step toward killing other ways of customizing Reddit, such as Reddit Enhancement Suite or the use of the old.reddit.com desktop interface.
This isn't only a problem on the user level: many subreddit moderators depend on tools only available outside the official app to keep their communities on-topic and spam-free.
What's the plan?
On June 12th,
many subreddits will be going dark to protest this policy. Some will return after 48 hours: others will go away permanently unless the issue is adequately addressed, since many moderators aren't able to put in the work they do with the poor tools available through the official app. This isn't something any of us do lightly: we do what we do because we love Reddit, and we truly believe this change will make it impossible to keep doing what we love.
The two-day blackout isn't the goal, and it isn't the end. Should things reach the 14th with no sign of Reddit choosing to fix what they've broken, we'll use the community and buzz we've built between then and now as a tool for further action. An open letter on the state of affairs regarding the API pricing and third party apps and how that will impact moderators and communities. What can you do as a user?
- Complain. Message the mods of reddit , who are the admins of the site: message reddit: submit a support request: comment in relevant threads on reddit, such as this one, leave a negative review on their official iOS or Android app- and sign your username in support to this post.
- Spread the word. Rabble-rouse on related subreddits. Meme it up, make it spicy. Bitch about it to your cat. Suggest anyone you know who moderates a subreddit join the coordinated mod effort at ModCoord also Save3rdPartyApps
- Boycott and spread the word...to Reddit's competition! Stay off Reddit entirely on June 12th through the 13th- instead, take to your favorite non-Reddit platform of choice and make some noise in support!
- Don't be a dick. As upsetting this may be, threats, profanity and vandalism will be worse than useless in getting people on our side. Please make every effort to be as restrained, polite, reasonable and law-abiding as possible.
What can you do as a moderator?

2023.06.06 17:13 Ridicolousrat Wow ChatGPT helps with applications
Graduated undergrad with a philosophy and history degree last month and been struggling in the job market looking for a position while I make long term plans for long school. I felt confident after meeting with my schools career center that I had a strong resume and custom fit cover letters for the sort of positions I was looking for (administrative assistants for the most part).
I had an internship on my belt with demonstrated success in a lot of skills, a great transcript with relevant extracurricular, and even a fair bit of customer service experience in retail assisting customer service roles. Granted I'm a new grad but I thought it wouldn't be too bad finding a job.
I got demolished instantly during applications. Almost every place would reject me incredibly fast and I didn't really understand why. After doing some research I'm fairly sure I knew what was happening.
My resume wasn't making it past the dumb AI filter they use to screen candidates. Seriously if you don't mirror back exactly the skills for the position you're applying to with some metric they just filter you out. It's super particular with the language too! Even small differences like using the words client and customer differently is enough to throw the whole damn thing off.
After reading a bit more about the process I was kinda shocked how helpful ChatGPT was. I had always kinda ignored it as a student because I thought it was dumb as hell. Then I looked at the success statistics of people using it in resumes and I knew I was stupid not to use it.
It wasn't helpful without very specific instructions and role prompting but asking it to identify the three most important responsibilities for a position with relevant language, tailor my resume to specific postings, help me quantify impact (especially with that internship being my best experience), and just do general editing. Combined with a few slick templates designed to be eye catching and targeted phone calls with recruiters the ATS software has started letting me through!
I'm not posting this to repeat what everyone else has said but after trying it for a bit I'm really hopeful that this will make a huge difference. The last three weeks have been frankly depressing seeing a lot of near-immediate rejections from positions I felt qualified for and being concerned about my ability to find a half-decent wage. I'm really hopeful that now I can land a couple solid interviews and prepare extensively to land a job. Maybe it will work out after all.

2023.06.06 16:36 elbattinson [QCrit] THE OTHER GIRLS, YA Supernatural Romance (75K)
This is my Nanowrimo project that I’m currently doing my first revision pass on. I know that comping Twilight is a no no but it’s also what I read in preparation for starting this project. I wanted to write sapphic Twilight.I’m always unsure of what stakes to include in query letters. I hit most of the novel’s major stakes below but the entire first act is mostly internal conflict that transitions into external conflict by the second act and I’m never sure how to word that in query format (any advice is appreciated!) A stake I was iffy on was whether or not to include that the main character is coming into her sexuality, because whereas that is a subtle pull to the story, it’s not what I wanted to focus on beyond the other factors in the manuscript.
Any advice is appreciated! I'm still very new to query writing and despite lurking here for ages and previously posting a QCrit for a now scrapped project, I always feel like a deer trying to walk on ice when I'm preparing my query.***
Dear, Agent.
Seventeen-Year Old Harper Bloom has everything. A spot on the cheerleading team, perfect grades, and the adoration of her peers of course. She even has a cute boyfriend. A really cute boyfriend. Everyone loves high-school clichés and she checks her own boxes one by one until she carves out the life she wants at Silver Creek High. At least- she does until she finds out Chris is cheating on her.
Maybe taking a tire iron to his car about it isn’t Harper’s best idea, but it’s how she deals with his betrayal. With Spirit Week and homecoming hot on her heels, she has to decide what kind of ex-girlfriend to be: The sobbing mess or the stone cold bitch? Losing Chris feels like a relief, but he still ruined her shot at the perfect senior year. Harper’s chances at recovering from this unforeseen roadblock are fleeting. She planned her senior year around her cliché docket from choosing to date a football player in the first place all the way to prom. Life seriously can’t throw her another curveball or she might lose it.
Enter curveball number 2, Kate Babineaux. The new girl. She’s tall, dark, and irrevocably beautiful. Kate is everything Harper isn’t: an effortless girls’ girl. Kate slides into her life like the puzzle piece Harper didn’t even know she was missing. Even Jeni, Harper’s best friend, seems to agree. For the first time in Harper’s life, she has the friend group she’s always seen on the TV shows she binged as a starry eyed kid. All that’s missing is the romance, real romance, not the crap Chris was trying to sell her.
Everything changes when Jeni goes missing. Chris’ ever increasing temper reaches a new height, Mr. Crawford starts dodging her questions, and Kate’s darkness extends beyond her appearance. The police say everything is fine, but Harper knows better. If she wants any answers she’ll have to go into the woods herself to hunt them down and Harper’s always kept her eyes on her prize. The only difference now is her adjusted rulebook, the woods, and what Kate’s been hiding from her.
THE OTHER GIRLS (75,000) is a YA Supernatural Romance that combines the supernatural elements of Twilight with the coming of age themes of Ladybird. I’m currently in my senior year of my English degree at [University]. In my spare time when I’m not wish fulfilling what baby gay me would’ve loved reading, I’m taking care of my dog and binge playing The Sims 4.
EDIT: I realized post reading (and struggling to log in to reddit, oops.) That I completely didn't include the important bit about Kate being a vampire. I was looking at a query letter form while and it completely slipped my mind while I was clicking back and forth. Thank you everyone who commented with this. I just totally blanked on it.
