2023.06.02 12:57 Gloryinwar Creating the Federal Republic whose political scene in government is dominated by powerful Oligarchs, and whose internal politics is characterized by political favors and alliances between Oligarchs and prominent members of government.

As the title says, I wanted to create a Federal Republic that has its politics and government structure dominated by rich Oligarchs, as well as being characterized by a lot of political favors and alliances being made to advance certain agendas in the political scene.
This is for a science fantasy setting of mine.
This is a Federal Republic that controls millions of worlds.

You see, this is the Federal Republic where Politics is a complex web of alliances, promises, and political favors. This is most pronounced in the Federation Council (A Senate of sorts.) And from there, the political schemes can be felt to varying degrees.
You see, Oligarchs are often members of the Federal Council themselves, and on top of being members of the government, they are also prominent businessmen or are people involved in the military-industrial complex and Arms companies.
The Oligarchs in this context represent a huge part of the economy, since they are owners of powerful businesses and corporations, only instead of using this to expand their business, they use their wealth in order to insert themselves as politicians in the system... This is because the current system is already tolerant of them, and so the Oligarchs simply want to block laws that could take that from them.
Using their wealth in order to forge alliances, get members of the lower-level administration on their side, and most importantly play the political game.

And here is where the office of the President comes in.
You see, the way the Constitution worked was that a President is elected for 30-year terms. But there was never any limitation or even oversight over how many terms a single president may serve, meaning it is perfectly within the bounds of the Constitution.
Furthermore, while the Oligarchs can influence which laws get passed and which laws get rejected outright, they have little legal say over the matter of foreign and domestic policy.
Under the constitution, the Federal Council has no power over those matters. Only the office of the President may have those sorts of powers and have the final say regarding Foreign and Domestic Policy, as well as being the sole commander in chief of the Military.
So people who want to become President will have to appeal to certain groups of Oligarchs and appease their interests. This is a tricky game since siding with one group might mean the others, which could lead to problems down the line.
Once sworn into the office of president, it becomes a mutually beneficial relationship.
Where the Oligarch Party that supported them would get what they want, and the President able to pursue whatever policies he or she wants.

It is a bit more complex than that, such as one party of Oligarchs losing out and the current president either being replaced and going into hiding or exile due to having enemies and not having the protection of the office... Or the current president managing to strike a deal with the new powers.
Either way, it is an intricate system.

I was inspired by the Russian Oligarchs, only with the corruption from a military standpoint being less severe and more "Tolerable." Thus they are able to sustain long interstellar campaigns.

The latest legal fight concerning capital interests and workers in the United States has resulted in the US Supreme court overturning lower courts' decisions to dismiss a case of Glacier - a concrete company - suing the workers' union for destruction of property after negotiations broke down and a strike was called.

It is precisely in the government's protection of property rights and claims to ownership that we find the framing and brickwork of capitalism. Some Basic Facts

In 2017, Glacier Northwest and the local Teamsters Union for the truck drivers failed to negotiate a renewed contract, triggering a workers' strike. That morning, 16 of the 85 striking drivers had already filled trucks with wet concrete. The trucks were returned to Glacier's facilities with the drums rolling so as not to destroy the trucks and potentially allow any managers etc to save the concrete. (Note here that many of the major media corporations leave out details about the manner and conditions in which the drivers left the trucks and concrete.)
Glacier tried suing the union for destruction of its property, and lower courts had been dismissing the case following an earlier 1959 decision that said state law generally doesn't apply to cases like this, and therefore the National Labor Review Board has jurisdiction over the case.
The Supreme Court's decision simply overturns lower courts' decisions to dismiss the case at this point, which means the case will go on, the desired outcome at this point for Glacier Northwest.
Importantly, note that the drivers not only returned their trucks to the facility and left the drums rolling, at least some of them notified their managers of the condition of the trucks and managers and non-striking workers managed to remove the concrete before the trucks were damaged, so they are suing over the lost concrete. Importantly, Glacier had issued letters of reprimand to the drivers, but rescinded some after the Union's lawyer pointed out that they had notified management of the condition of the trucks just at the time of the strike.

The fact of the matter is that labor movements are wrapped up in fundamental disputes about the control over capital and as such are intrinsically violent and destructive.

The question is not whether or not it would be best to avoid violence and destruction; the question is why these conflicts repeatedly get framed as stemming from greed, selfishness, and immoral actions of low-wage workers and almost never as the greed and selfishness and stubbornness in negotiations by capitalists.

Back to the concrete trucks.
I have seen (and no doubt will see some of you) say that the workers shouldn't have begun their strike after loading up the trucks. IIRC, Glacier's lawyer themself suggests that the workers intentionally timed their strike to be a burden on the company.
Yea, well, that is kind of the fucking point. Strikes and protests are intended to be inconvenient for the people who are not listening. As MLK said, "*A riot is the language of the unheard." The fact that the trucks were left rolling and that management was even notified at all of the condition of the trucks and concrete says that these workers actually kind of gave a shit about the hardship intrinsic in a strike, and the fact that managers and any remaining non-striking workers struggled to save the trucks and lost some concrete is entirely the point of a strike: to remind the owners of capital that it is the workers who make shit happen day in and day out.
The decision by this court is one of a long history of governments intervening on behalf of private capital and the wealthy elite members of society against the interest of a lower class of wage laborers.

My dad, grand dad, and I were all in the military (I was deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan). My grand dad served in the Pacific during WW2, and my dad was in Vietnam. They hate an ethnic group of people because of their time over seas. It doesn't matter who they are, what they do, where they are from, or where they are born.
My mom and sister are not that way, but my brother is. I went low contact with my dad and brother as soon as I went into the military.
My first station was Japan. My dad made several comments about it, but I ignored it. While there, I fell in love with the culture and language. I did my best to hide it from my dad. I became fluent in Japanese (still working on the written aspect). I was there for about 3 years. But then I was deployed twice. The last one is where I got wounded and sent home.
While I the hospital/recovery, I met my now wife. She was a volunteer for the organization that helped me get back on my foot. Her family is originally from Japan. Her grandma doesn't speak English. Her parents are first-generation Americans. My wife was born here. They all love me (now).
I told my wife before we became really serious about my family. She wanted to try to win them over. We started with phone calls. They all went well. They invited her to Christmas a year later. We went and that was when the first incident happened. My dad was quiet for once. But my brother got angry and walked out after saying we lied to them and some other really horrible things. It was a tense situation. My mom and sister fell in love with her. My dad kept it together at that time.
That next year, I told them I was going to propose. My dad lost his crap. It was bad. That cause me and my sister both to go no contact with him and my brother officially. Less than a year later, my mom started divorce proceedings.
A few months after my parents' divorce, wife an I were married. My wife, sister, and mom are all really close and we all live together.
We just found out we will be expecting later this year. It got around to my dad, and he reached out and blamed me and my wife (mostly my wife) for breaking up the family. That my wife (he used a racist term) RUINED his life and corrupted me and his girls. My brother reached back out and tried to apologize about how he acted, but I could tell he didn't mean it. He just wanted to be back in contact with my mom and sister.
I told my dad that the only person to blame for his situation is himself. It was not me or my wife that ruined his relationships. From this point on, any attempt to contact me or my family will result in legal action. Then I hung up.
My house is full of love for the first time in a long time. My wife, sister, and mom all are happier than I have ever seen them. We all go to group therapy together, which helped a lot.

Hello my friends. I am searching for a shared tradition between Galician and Amazigh culture.
Traditionally, in some galician villages, in NW Spain, we preserve an ancient tradition for weddings, which involves that a woman dances for the bride and groom, with a flat and sometimes decorated bread in her head. This is called Regueifa. Here is a video. The regueifa is made up of a bread cake that is decorated with colored ribbons, fruit and flowers.

A good friend of mine found that in Maroc, the Msemen bread is also called Rghaif or Rghayfe, is that correct? Also, he assisted a wedding in the northeast, in which a couple of men danced with a big plate with rghaif and tea glasses and other decorations on their heads.
To me, the fact that the wedding bread is called Regueifa in Galicia, has to have connections with the Rghaif bread in MAroc. As you know, our cultures have been connected for long. I would love to know if any of you knows about these traditions in which someone dances with a bread on top of their heads. Also I would like to know what does Rghaif mean.

I'm looking for a Bridgeton style rp, but nothing cannon, I would like us to use ocs.
Even if you haven't watched Bridgeton, that's completely fine, I don't mind explaining the settings. It goes something like this.
It's a setting in the 1800 period, where each year there is a matching season, for ladies to enter society. They have to attend balls, and find suitable matches for themselves, to marry and finally enter society.
Here is were our rp will start. My character will attend her first ball, at the age of 18, to find herself a few suitors and in the end, a husband. She will be accompanied by her mother and older brother, which is supposed to make the deal with her future husband for her hand, since her father died at an unfortunate age.
This is where our rp will start, now we could totally do a enemies to lovers relationship, or perhaps just a wholesome love story with a fair share of drama angst and fluff.
The starter is written in first person pov, but I can modify it to fit third person pov, so there's no need to worry. Again I'm asking for literate rokeplayers only, and I will only rp on Reddit, since I'm not active on any other platforms.

2023.06.02 12:54 Odd-Panda-7351 Paranoid thoughts about grandparents

I’m not entirely sure how to start this, but in my family on my dad's side, everyone is separated from one another. And the background is my aunt is controlling and a money-hungry asshole who broke my whole family apart that’s really all I can say about her without going on a rampage about her too but back to grandparents basically everything they’d do revolved around my anut and her children as of being the youngest child on both my mums and my dads side being let down chosen over my cousins really had a significant impact in how I trust and feel around people having this feeling from then to know but with this constants of revolving their life around my aunt and giving into anything she wanted my mum and dad choose to cut all communication with both my aunt and my grandparents and once they did this I felt alot more happier and myself but as of still being in school during the time of this the only constant reminder i had was my cousin but as the years went on my dad decided to start communication with them again which at first I was happy about but I began to notice just how eerie of a feeling I got of them(I feel in this part it’s important to know they are hoarders for as long as I remember them being) but I don’t know if I feel this constant paranoia as I’m looking directly into the eyes of the person who I felt as if they picked up my trust and then completely shattered it without even remotely trying to fix it or it’s because to them I’m nothing and with or without me their life wouldn’t be any different because I mean they treat me like shit they constantly forget about me and leave me out they’d constantly talk about how great my cousins are doing whereas I’m left to constantly think I am not doing anything to earn their encouragement not to mention the fact I’m a female who wants to become a car mechanic and when my dad had told my grandfather what I was going to be doing he had no word or encouragement just straight up sexism. But as for the paranoid feeling I feel around them, it's the smell of dirtiness. I feel their eyes staring at me every time I enter a room they're in. I know my mom understands my constant discomfort around them, and she feels that way too. I’ve never felt like this around anyone other than them, and I know they moved from place to place constantly. My thoughts can only wonder why. I doubt this will get seen as I’m new to Reddit, but I feel as if it’s good for me to just talk about it, whether that’s to no one or someone.

2023.06.02 12:54 Kapt0 My list of changes ofr As Roma heading into the summer. In short? We need a plan

I just want to see if this time our team can make the right decisions
1) I think our first priority is selling the players we don't need anymore:

Tammy - 35M+
Ibanez - 25M+
Gini - 0
Belotti - 0
Karsdorp - 10M+
Camara - 0

2) Renew those players we desperatly need for next year

Elsha
Paulo
Smalling

3) It's imperative to start July by trying to understand which manager you want for the team:

Do we keep Mou?
Do we want to search for another guy?
Do we wanna gamble and call back De Rossi just for the lols?

I'm down with any option if that means we can have a plan and we can satisfy the manager we bring in by the start of the Pre season in August. We can't allow another Belotti situation where the manager has to start a season without even knowing the roster and then finding himself with an out off shape player.
4) If Mou stays here, GET HIM A SUPPORT.

Totti as DS or Vice president
A reasonable DS for the club who understands how things work and that can manage Roma's horrible press.

5) Market. Here's my take: we should start by trying to find the replacements for those departures I mentioned above in point 1, but keeping a low profile. FFP is a fucking nightmare.

2 strikers, a main guy and a support. They don't have to score 20 goals per season, but heck, let's just try to find a 10 goal per season and 5. It would still be an improvement.
A GK. Rui doesn't really have to go, but he can't be No.1 after this season.
1 defender (who could be Llorente if the fee is lowered a bit) and another full back to support Celik or to either fully replace him
2 midfielders to balance out the losses of Gini and Camara.

Bonus: we should try to get another striker or winger that should take the place of Zaniolo. Remember we lost one spot in the EL list because of him and another for FFP sanctions.

Final considerations: if we really manage to have a balance of 70M+, we should try to buy these 6+1 players for cheap or as free agents.
I know there's talks for N'Dicka already and Aouar (and I think that's nice). Both would have a lower salary compared to ibanez and Gini so it's reasonable to assume those 2 are the ones that I feel confident we're gonna see leaving.
I hope Pinto (or whoever will become our DS) will work together with Mou and buy players accordingly, avoiding situations like Camara and Belotti, who I consider the 2 worst failures of this year behind Zaniolo.

Surely we can't keep asking Mou to resort to Primavera players and to almost useless strikers. This season has been terrible because the level of some players was really down bad compared to the pricetags or their salary.
Also, we've been pretty unlucky:

with Solbakken joining mid season
Inuries in April have been terrible
the winter transfer market was atrocious
In europa league we are 1st with woodwork hits with 14. The second team has 6... In the league we are tied second with 16 (juve first with 17)

Head to a new season and forget about this one. Good emotions, I apprecciate the effort of everybody, but do better next time.

I think a fundamental misunderstanding many of the fans of this show have, is that they forget that Succession is an art-piece, not real life. Things like this don't happen simply because they're "logical" and are realistic, they happen because the writers (and all others involved) had an artistic intent for the story, characters etc. Sure they keep things relatively grounded in reality but at the end of the day this show, this art, like any other art, seeks to convey its messages and themes above all else, not simply portray reality. This leads people to "dumb down" the show, interpreting every event or decision as if they occurred in the real world and thus are inherently meaningless, when we all know this show has a hell of a lot of themes and underlying messages. This is why more or less all of the actual reliable predictions for the show came from analysis of these themes (take the King Lear allusions for example) and the things that only the audience could know would have meaning (like the Wambsgans triple play foreshadowing). This is also why much of the business jargon they spurt in this show is barely intelligible, because you're not meant to assess the show based on the material reality of the succession universe, but to see through all the bullshit they say and work out the underlying motives, messages, traumas etc of the characters through what is unsaid. To let go of "reality" is one of the first things you learn when it comes to literary comprehension, because in almost all cases of real, substantial art, "reality" is an anchor that ties you to the limits of the real world, once you let go of the importance of reality, stories are allowed to flourish and grow into something unique and inspired. This is why it's so frustrating when people say Tom "won", because he was simply more competent than everyone else. He was not, and that was certainly not why he ended up as [puppet] CEO.

Hi guys, I am currently drowning in emails due to the many clients I have. I Always have to find threads, go back and forth, try to find a mail they refer to..
Is there a way to set up something that looks like a chat. One each per client?
Like if you were chatting on WhatsApp or Facebook or slack.
I really don't know how to efficiently manage 20+ clients with 60-80 Mails per day anymore.

2023.06.02 12:53 pixie59 Just Finished LightFall. My thoughts.

Contrary to popular belief, LightFall had a fun campaign, Although being short. I love the story but its not better than Beyond Light and Witch Queen and Forsaken. I love how Strand (is fun) is almost in every mission unlike Stasis. Nimbus kinda fun. Rohan is like a not memorable character that doesn’t speak much but his death was kinda sad, especially with the ending with his funeral. The CloudArk is kinda cool but not that cool if you understand what I mean. The ending was amazing (although easy on the classic difficulty) tormentors are a fun addition to the game.
Overall I give the campaign a 6.5/10 Decent overall

Time to try the Raid
