2023.06.02 12:36 NimbleThor 5 Quick tl;dr iOS Game Reviews / Recommendations (Episode 178)

Happy first Friday of June, my friends! :) And welcome back to this weekly mobile gaming recommendation thread based on some of the most interesting games I played and that were covered on MiniReview this week. I hope you'll enjoy the read.

This episode includes an amazing adventure flying game, a cute polished puzzle game, and old school action arcade game, a fun Brotato alternative, and an indie tower defense real-time strategy game.

Let's get to the games:

Laya's Horizon [Game Size: 546 MB] (Netflix-only)

Genre: Adventure / Casual / Flying - Offline
Orientation: Landscape
Required Attention: Full
tl;dr review by NimbleThor:
Laya’s Horizon is a fantastic 3D adventure flying game where we explore a large island, participate in mini-games, and complete quests – all by gliding from mountaintops using the cape on our back.
Starting at the top of a mountain, we tap to launch ourselves into a glide across a completely open game world. Scattered across the island are NPCs with quests or mini-games, airstreams that provide an uplift so we can glide further, and lots of hidden secrets.
The mini-games range from flying under bridges or close to threes without hitting any obstacles, to racing against NPC gliders. Bust most importantly, gliding around the island just feels amazing – especially when going fast. Although the core gameplay is different, it has a bit of that same feel as flying in “Sky: Children of the Light”.
Despite the many challenging quests, however, the gameplay feels more like a relaxing free-roam experience than something you’re meant to complete as fast as possible.
A few hours into the game, we also discover new mountain tops to launch from, and better capes with different advantages, which allows us to reach new areas of the map.
Laya’s Horizon is made by the developers of Alto’s Adventure, which shows in the game’s atmospheric art style and overall feel. Combined with the music, it creates a highly immersive experience.
The controls may seem daunting at first, but I quickly got the hang of them, and after an hour or two, they start to feel natural.
The biggest downside is that the game requires a beefy phone to run properly. Hopefully, it also expands with more islands down the road.
Laya’s Horizon is a premium game that can only be played with a Netflix subscription. If you already have Netflix, it’s a must-try for anyone fond of casual adventure games.
NOTE: if you don't have Netflix, it's not worth buying the subscription if you only plan on playing Laya’s Horizon.

Where's Samantha? [Total Game Size: 310 MB] (Free)

Genre: Platform / Puzzle - Offline
Orientation: Landscape
Required Attention: Some
tl;dr review by AlexSem:
Where's Samantha? is a beautiful and clever physics-based puzzle platformer that tells a romantic story of two living pieces of fabric who brave increasingly dangerous challenges in order to eventually reunite.
The game takes place in a surreal and colorful textile world full of gaps, springs, levers, buttons, gates, moving platforms, and other interactive objects. There are also plenty of dangerous traps that we need to overcome, including spike pits, rotating saw blades, shooting cannons, and even laser turrets.
Starting as an easy "walk in the park", the game gradually turns into a deadly obstacle course that requires some serious platforming skills to survive.
Throughout our journey, we can make use of an unusual gameplay mechanic that allows our character to split into two, or even three separate pieces of fabric that we can then operate independently. This enables us to solve complex puzzles that involve interacting with multiple remote objects simultaneously.
What’s more, our weight and physics change when splitting up, which means we can apply a large force to doors and platforms when playing as a single character, or split up so we can jump higher to get over obstacles.
What I like the most about the game is its amazing visual style, where every item we see and interact with is hand-drawn to resemble a real-world physical object. Add to this the game’s atmospheric music, crisp sound effects, responsive controls, fluid animations, and an absolutely amazing voice-over narration by an award-winning actor – and you have yourself one of the most aesthetically pleasing experiences you can hope for from a mobile game.
Where's Samantha? shows occasional ads, with a $0.99 to disable them and a $3.99 iAP to unlock the full game.
It's rare to find such a high-quality game on mobile, so if you enjoy puzzles and platformers, I can easily recommend checking it out.

Retro City Rampage DX [Game Size: 29 MB] ($4.99)

Genre: Action / Arcade - Offline
Orientation: Landscape
Required Attention: Full
tl;dr review by AlexSem:
Retro City Rampage DX is an old-school racing and shooting arcade game that draws heavy inspiration from the famous Grand Theft Auto series. It features lots of pixelated violence, energetic 8-bit soundtracks, hectic action, and tons of references to movies and video games of the past.
Playing as a henchman for a powerful crime lord who is robbing yet another bank, we quickly find ourselves dragged into a dangerous cascade of events that only get weirder when time-traveling and other ridiculous sci-fi elements get introduced.
I personally stopped paying attention to the story after a while, as it mostly served as a background for all the crazy events taking place, and as an excuse to reference endless iconic characters from popular franchises.
Just like in GTA, there’s a lot happening very quickly - shooting, racing, fighting, stealing vehicles, robbing banks, chasing the police, participating in minigames, and much much more. The game doesn’t restrict itself to a specific genre, instead just mashing together various elements from all the retro hits of the past. And it somehow actually works.
If we get bored by the fast-paced story mode, we can freely roam the city to do whatever we want, or hone our skills in various arcade challenges.
Unfortunately, this mobile port of the game isn’t perfect. Everything looks too tiny on small screens, and the touch controls aren’t comfortable when we need to react ultra-quickly. So it’s highly recommended to use a Bluetooth controller.
Retro City Rampage DX is a premium game that costs $4.99 on iOS. It’s a great tribute to the classic games of the past, and it succeeds at inducing a deep level of nostalgia while providing the exact type of highly entertaining gameplay experience seasoned gamers grew up with.

Pickle Pete: Survivor [Game Size: 248 MB] (Free)

Genre: Arcade / Bullet-Hell - Offline
Orientation: Portrait + some Landscape
Required Attention: Full
tl;dr review by NimbleThor:
Pickle Pete is a reverse bullet-hell roguelike that combines the over-the-top chaotic gameplay of Brotato with the permanent character progression of Archero for a surprisingly fun gameplay experience.
The objective is to survive 10 time-limited waves of enemy attacks, return home, and then continue to the next chapter. During each wave, we control our pickle character with a large joystick while it auto-shoots at any enemies in range.
After every wave, we get to first pick one of three random stat-boosts if we leveled up during the wave, and then spend the pickles we’ve collected on buying weapons and items. Just like in Brotato, we can equip six weapons at a time, which quickly makes the gameplay chaotically fun.
If we get two of the same item, we can even merge them to increase the rarity, which makes it a lot stronger. I found the weapons to be decently diverse, and it’s entertaining to experiment with everything from snipers to magic wands, anvils, turrets, and drones.
After defeating the boss in wave 10, we receive gold and permanent items. In-between runs, we equip and upgrade these items to grow stronger, and buy stat boosts. All this permanent progression makes the game feel slightly more rewarding than Brotato.
Playing normal runs requires energy that we eventually run out of. Thankfully, the game also features a daily mission game mode, a competitive endless mode, and several challenge modes that are almost entire games on their own. Most of these don’t require any energy.
The art and animations are silly but neat, and I found it particularly nice that we can see where an enemy is about to spawn.
Pickle Pete monetizes via incentivized ads to revive, receive extra gold, or refresh the shop. There are also iAPs for items and a paid battle pass, but none of this is needed to progress at a decent pace.

Nanuleu (Game Size: 59 MB] ($2.99)

Genre: Tower Defense / Strategy / Indie - Offline
Orientation: Portrait
Required Attention: Full
tl;dr review by AlexSem:
Nanuleu is an area control real-time strategy game where we expand our territory, accumulate resources, and place defenses to repel the enemy onslaught until we can launch an effective counterattack.
We play on a randomly generated square grid where certain tiles contain valuable resource deposits such as minerals and water. Starting at the center, we spend resources to build various nodes adjacent to the tiles we already occupy.
Cheap root nodes serve as roads that expand our network, while more expensive extractors can only be placed on deposit tiles to increase resource production. Our objective is to reach several distant tiles on the map and build special nodes there.
As time goes by, enemy camps start to appear in the corners of the map. These spawn troops that attack our nodes, and to oppose them, we must place defense towers that fire projectiles. Once we occupy all the special tiles, we get access to our own troop factories so we can produce units that destroy the enemy spawns. Getting rid of all the enemies is the ultimate goal of the game.
The strategy revolves around carefully balancing our expansion and resource production while racing against the ever-growing enemy forces. If we fail to occupy the deposits, we may not be able to produce enough towers in time, but a larger territory is also harder to control and requires more resources for towers. I found this balancing to be quite challenging and unforgiving, which highly contrasts the game's seemingly casual art style.
Nanuleu is a $2.99 premium game without ads or iAPs. Despite being rather simple and repetitive, it still provides an entertaining and unique experience for fans of real-time strategy and tower defense games.

Retro City Rampage DX [Game Size: 29 MB] ($2.99)

Retro City Rampage DX is a premium game that costs $2.99 on Android.

2023.06.02 11:03 zac7th Should I join the Focus?

Hi, I am an international freshman joining Duke this August. I intend to pursue Economics and probably Public Policy.
I was recently admitted to the Focus Cluster Science and the Public and still considering whether to join it.
On the one hand, some of the courses in the cluster with regard to law and policy interested me. Though I intend to major in Economics, I am still open to new choices and would hope to use Focus as a platform to discover new pathways.
On the other hand, I have read some reviews on Reddit and asked some current undergrads about Focus. Some commented that for international students like me who do not have any APs, the workload will be greater for us later on if we cannot decide on our own courses. Some clusters will also require extensive writing and it may be harsh enough to decrease our grades.
Any advice or supplemental information for me to make an informed decision? Thank you very much!

2023.06.02 07:29 Particular_Ideal_465 Volunteer or sacrifice GPA

I have been feeling slightly stable until I was invited to do all this really fun, interesting and appropriate shit thru a non profit I’ve been volunteering at and student shit (a trip next weekend, and a conference this weekend and reviewing grants Sunday). I am taking two accelerated hard science classes this summer and do not have the capacity to do shit that isn’t that. Even tho doing anything but that sounds so fun.
It’s like my autism neurotic organized school slip needs to be turned on or I become a wreck. And I have to really respect that but it is so hard to set those boundaries of saying no to opportunities. Bc it’s a new thing for me to get invited to them .

2023.06.02 07:09 MGPAlpha Dealing with homophobic harassment from guests

Today during my shift, I was pushing in beauty (though I’m normally in tech) and was approached by group of guests—three male teenagers. One asked if the store had pride merch, and I said yes and pointed to the back next to Womens Athletic where ours is right now. He then asked “do you have any” which I first interpreted as does the store have any, so I replied there’s plenty in stock. He asked again, clarifying that he meant did I personally have any. I replied that I did, wary at this point that probably wasn’t looking buy any and more just being an asshole. He replied by saying something like “Follow the Lord” (don’t remember the exact wording). At this point I abandoned the conversation since the group was clearly just trying to harass me, and went back to stocking. They stuck around for a minute or so, occasionally calling out to me about “following the lord” and giggling to each other, and eventually went away. I’m openly bi and trans, and quite visibly queer, so it’s pretty clear to me that they came up to me with the intent to harass me from the start. I didn’t feel like I was in danger at any point, bc I was in the store with other people around and they’re just some dipshit teens, but it sucked nonetheless. So I have two questions for y’all. First, who at my store should I tell about this? My ETL, AP, HR, someone else? I feel like I should definitely tell someone that this happened and might happen more, but not sure who. Second question: what should I do about this in the future? This was just the first day of Pride, and it definitely seems like this stuff is gonna keep happening. I feel like I handled this well, as I left the conversation when it became outright harassment, and didn’t give them any more attention. Since I’m normally in tech, I have a little more power over guests because they need me to unlock stuff for them, so if any are outright bigoted toward me (slurs, etc) I’m just gonna refuse to help them. Is there anything else I should do here?

2023.06.02 07:06 Fair_Concentrate7387 Help me stop breadcrumbing pAPs…

I hopped back on AM recently after a recent fling outside my marriage made me feel very much alive again…it’s still a bit ongoing LD FWB. But I thought I would try AM and see if I could find something local. As a woman, we clearly get inundated with messages. A handful of these I choose to talk to on another platform and I’ve met a couple in person. The in person ones were ok, one I didn’t feel super attracted to. One had some red flag things he said I don’t want to deal with in the future. Others I am chatting up periodically. I am not in a rush though, but a lot of these guys are and it takes up a lot of time to respond when just to the few on the external platforms. So much that I feel like I’m neglecting regular life responsibilities. I am a people pleaser and have a hard time telling someone I’m not interested, especially as this is a weird situation. So I feel like I keep bread crumbing these other guys, partly bc I’m not in a rush, partly bc I go back and forth about pursuing something local and taking time away from my kids. Guilt feelings amplified.
Any nice phrases to tell a guy you met up with that it isn’t going to work out?
What about telling one you have been messaging only, but don’t see it going anywhere compared to other pAPs?
How do you keep time limits on this taking away from the rest of life? It’s like a whole batch of messages every day and I barely keel up with work emails!

2023.06.02 06:54 menatopboi Senior Classes - Need Advice

These are the following classes I'm going to be taking next year as a senior in high school. Please if you have any advice for these classes feel free share, thank you. I will leave a caveat for each class that is on this list, so hopefully that can demonstrate to you my take/worries about the class.
  1. AP Calculus AB (Kinda scared considering I haven't taken pre-calc. May sub this for AP Pre-Calc though)
  2. AP Chemistry (Was a chemistry god, but the last time I took chemistry was my post freshman year summer)
  3. English 12 (Good at writing and stuff, but just not a big fan of the AP English classes)
  4. Spanish 4 (Good at Spanish should be free)
  5. AP GOV/AP Macro (Not bad at both econ and government, so hopefully should be fine. Lowkey scared about the amount of notes though)

2023.06.02 06:08 OverallSelection9517 How do I find out if an IG investigation was founded

A few months ago, I made an on-the-spot correction multiple times on a soldier within my organization. A few weeks later after the third or fourth correction, I got pulled into my Battalion Commander's and was counseled that I was being flagged for an IG investigation for allegations of counter-productive leadership styles. The IO that came down to investigate the claim ended up being an ex from college, but I was assured that it wasn't a problem because we were professionals.
A few weeks later, the IO sent me an email telling me that the allegations were founded. They emailed me the entirety of the investigation without redactions so my lawyer and I could review it and rebuttal their findings. After submitting the rebuttal, my BC told me that they were unflagging me because the investigation was over. A month later, as I'm clearing post, a new IO shows up. They weren't clear on what happened, but they were given an extremely redacted copy of the investigation and told to reinvestigate everything. I never heard anything back, which my lawyer said, "That's good news because it means it was unfounded"
I've been signed into my new unit now for a couple of months now. I haven't heard anything back about the investigation. My OER was already completed, signed, and accepted by HRC with a HQ block check, but an MQ write up. No mention or anything derogatory pertaining to the investigation. Nobody from the old unit that would know isn't responding to any type of communication. Even friends at the unit have distanced themselves from me. The IG Office at that base has also told me to do a FOIA request if I want to see the results. Meanwhile, my lawyer has told me, "No news is good news".
For anyone who has experience with IG investigations or the receiving end of a founded one, how do you know if you were found guilty? My concern is that founded IG investigations are now being shared with promotion boards. My profile is very healthy and I'm probably going to promote. However, I don't want to find out a few years from now I'm not competitive because of a potentially founded investigation.

2023.06.02 04:43 -comment What to look for in vod review of own gameplay?

So I’ve played a warlock on and off since BC, but intentionally started trying to get better at pvp in late s2 of Shadowlands. I’ve strictly played lock and DH. At this point I would consider myself good at times, not great. I’ve played a lot of games just to get reps in, know my optimal pve rotation, have important addons, watched some skill-capped videos, watched top players, and have begun to better understand most other class offensive go’s and defensive cd’s. Those things have gotten me to 2.6k in SS xp s1 (playing at 2k now) and 2.3k in rbg’s. But I’d like to continue improving. I’d like to get into 3s but I literally just sit in lfg for hours hardly ever getting invited.
Hopefully that gives enough info for the question. I just started recording my gameplay. But what are the things I should be looking for during review? This seems like it should be pretty easy to answer, but I’d be grateful for any insight.

2023.06.02 04:26 traumaventthrowaway Surgeon (who might be my only option) spent the entire consult trying to talk me out of hysterectomy??? Not just disclosing risks like normal, but arguing with literally everything I said about why I want the surgery, and pressuring me to not get it.

So I saw a gynecologist for the first time today, only for a hysterectomy (and possibly vaginectomy) consultation, and holy shit did it go WAY worse than I expected.
From the beginning, the doctor was openly VERY resistant to the idea of me getting any surgery, although that was the specific, stated reason I'd even made an appointment with her. She spent the whole time acting like hysto-/oopho-/vaginectomy were these horrible, life-ruining last-resort things that would destroy my opportunities for stuff I explicitly told her I do not want (biological children, vaginal sex, stopping hormones, etc.). I totally understand that they have to list all those things to you for informed consent, but she was actively trying to talk me out of it.
Even a significant family history of reproductive cancers wasn't enough to sway her on it at all. She insisted that I should get genetic testing first to make sure, because if I didn't have any of the known genes then maybe I would want to keep those organs. I told her that was just an extra factor in the decision and I definitely do not want to keep them either way, but she wouldn't listen.
When she kept being like “ohhh you’ll HAVE to take hormones FOREVER” as if that’s automatically a bad thing (again, I know they have to inform you of things, but they do NOT have to basically beg you to reconsider for 40 minutes straight), I responded that I want to be on T permanently. Then the goalposts moved again, and she started talking about how testosterone can make some health conditions much worse and then I might need to stop — which I think would have come up by now if it was going to, in the years I’ve been on T lmao. So I made it clear that even if I were ever physically forced to stop, I would genuinely rather have the health risks of no sex hormones than go back to E (I will literally kms if I am ever forced back onto estrogen, though I didn’t say that part to her for obvious reasons lol), and then she was like “you need to look up osteoporosis."
She was honestly SO condescending the whole time, and treated me like a child in the worst way. It was like she couldn’t wrap her brain around dysphoria being actually serious, and I can’t believe she’s supposed to be experienced with this stuff (not her main specialty, she’s just a regular gyno who has some notable experience with it, but still). She seemed to view it more like a weird personal choice than a lifesaving thing. She also has an even higher age requirement than 18 for the surgery — which doesn’t affect me at this point, but still bothers me in principle as someone who’s been severely dysphoric since puberty. When I told her I’d been wanting this for a decade now, she laughed and was like “oh you’re still a baby” and said something about how there are people who knew since they were 4 lmao, like it was kinda joking but still felt really dismissive.
This was the worst part for me: When she said something about how I'd (obviously) never be able to have vaginal sex in the future after vaginectomy, I said I know I never want that, and she was like “oh but how do you know if you’ve never even tried it” — and from there I was basically in trauma shutdown mode for the whole rest of the appointment. I started panic-babbling about how I don't like that and I can't even get anything in there without it hurting, and she was like "not even a finger?" and when I was like "...barely," she said something about how that's normal if you've never had sex and there was nothing wrong with my vagina. Anyway, I have severe bottom dysphoria and also what I’m pretty sure are vague memories of CSA involving penetration there with fingers, and I've always had significant physical pain and mental discomfort on the rare occasions I've tried to fit anything in there — so I do not want to be penetrated there by anyone, and do NOT appreciate someone trying to get me to just “give it a chance” or whatever.
She also kept (semi-jokingly, but still) acting like I was questioning her expertise any time I misinterpreted something she said or asked a question double-checking something to clarify. Like, after she said I wouldn’t need a Pap test and that she could just examine me under anesthesia right before the surgery, I asked just to be absolutely sure if that meant I wouldn’t need any exams prior to surgery, and she was like “were you not listening to me?” And when I tried to explain that no, I was, I just wanted to make sure, she went “I mean, do you WANT me to examine something?” in a way that felt more mocking than sincere, but I’m autistic so I guess I could be misreading everything, idk.
At the end she was like “okay now you can go think about it and call when you decide” — not just having me wait as like a required formality or something, but acting as if I didn’t come there having been decided for YEARS, well-researched, and just looking for a surgeon.
The one silver lining is that she didn’t have to do any physical exams today and wouldn’t require any for the surgery (and also that she wouldn’t literally refuse to do it if I did decide to go to her), but that's not enough to keep me from wanting a different doctor after this. Even though I thankfully got to keep my clothes on the whole time, I got triggered so badly that I physically felt like I had been/was being touched down there for a while afterward (ptsd thing I guess). I’m only just now kind of starting to emerge from really bad dissociation, too. Sorry if I sound overdramatic, but this whole thing hit me really hard for some reason.
I’m just kinda shocked bc I’d heard great things about her from a couple of trans guys online, read that she has experience with trans patients and these surgeries specifically, and couldn’t really find any negative reviews of her in general (though tbh I couldn’t find more than a few overall, so it’s not like there were dozens of positive ones either) — but I'm not gonna trust anyone with my body who thinks that maybe I just need to give being penetrated there a chance first, or that I’ll change my mind because I’m young.
Unfortunately, there is virtually no one else I can go to for these procedures in my state, and I have no out-of-state insurance coverage and definitely cannot afford to pay out of pocket. Hysto alone might have a few more options, but for vaginectomy I’ve only been able to even find 2 other possibilities online — 1 being a phallo/meta surgeon who seems to maybe still be affiliated with this same gyno for the hysto/vaginectomy part of things — and idk if either even takes my insurance. Also, it'll probably take so long (I had to wait months for this appointment) and I have so little energy to start over, especially knowing this kind of thing might happen again. I was hoping to get this done within the year.
I'm just feeling really hopeless and miserable now, and I'm not sure what to do.
