2023.06.02 13:07 LastDeimos Help! Junior dev burnout in new company

Hi, junior dev here! I am looking from some advice as it seem I made a terrible career choice.
I was working for a company (first real job) for around 2 years, but felt stuck due to the technologies they used and without guidance cause a senior dev left the team. So I decided to update my LinkedIn to see what happens. Within a month a got a few interviews and one got to me. The thing that made me swap company was that they offered a so call "career path" where they said they would mentor you through your time in the company and a chance in newer technologies while I worked in what I knew. Like 50% what I was doing in my previous company and once I got use to the workflow another 50% in the technologies that I was searching for, so I accepted.
Almost 2 months in the company and I feel burnout. I was looking for a place to grow where I could learn from more experienced developers. Every time I ask one of the seniors I get answered "I can't help you right now" or "I will call you in a sec", but I can spend a whole day or two waiting for help and doing nothing but looking at the same code. I can't get the job done due to local environment not working, depending on a deployed server that usually never works. I am still working with the "old technology" as I expected, I don't mind working with it for a time but I can't keep spending a whole day doing nothing and not learning.
I don't know to search for another job or stick with this one and hope it gets better. I was really comfortable in my last company but stuck with old technologies. Now I am unhappy with my day to day job and with even worse technology.
I would love to hear some advice cause I am really burnout.

2023.06.02 12:49 Gladius_Illuminatus How to do on chip debugging on an Arduino, a tutorial

DISCLAIMER I am NOT the person in the YoutTube video thumbnail and this is NOT just a text version of said video. This is a tutorial I wrote and the video is just one of my sources. Sadly I cant make the thumbnail disappear on mobile...
Alright, so first things first. This is a follow-up to my original post, where I originally asked how to do what I’m about to explain to you. What that basically means is that I ain't no pro, and I’m sure there are better and more correct ways to do this, but dang it was a lot of work to figure this all out, so I’m hoping it helps someone somewhere down the line.
I originally needed to do some debugging on an Arduino Mega 2560 (A Controllino to be more specific, but that’s just a Mega in a PLC package) and “Conventional” Arduino style serial Print debugging even while using some more advanced techniques like using #define to create Serial.print macros, using PlatformIO with the AVR Stub debugger or making use of the Better Serial Plotter was just not cutting it anymore. They are all nice, but for one reason or another did not quite cut it for me. Read my original post or the linked articles for more details. After asking the good folks of Reddit for help, I bought an ATMEL-ICE to do some JTAG debugging. In case you are not using a Mega like me, check the manufacturers website of your microcontroller. They will usually tell you if they support JTAG. Note that if you are using something other than an AVR chip, this process will be different. Andreas Spiess did a pretty good tutorial for other Chips like the popular ESP32.
Right enough talking let's get to the point.
PS Buckle up this is gonna be long and technical, and it already IS the TLDR; It took me two weeks and more curses and running to people for help who actually know what they are doing than I'd like to admit...
You will need:
  1. A microcontroller to debug (Arduino Mega 2560 in this example)
  2. PlatformIO (I use it with VS Code)
  3. Microchip Studio
  4. The ATMEL-ICE debugger (for some reason I could not find a local seller who would sell this to a private person. I could get one since this was for my day job, but I also saw some on the ol AliExpress and the Chinese ain’t picky about accepting someone’s money if they want to spend it, unlike Microchip...)
  5. Some jumper wires to hook it all up.
Once you installed all the software, it is time for step one:
Enabling on Chip debugging and JTAG because this is disabled by default.
IF you are using a stock Arduino board that has an ISP header (the six pins somewhere at the back of the board) do this:
  1. Take the ATMEL-ICE and connect the cable with the 6pole connector to the plug labeled “AVR”
  2. Connect the 6pole connector to the ISP header as shown in this tutorial
IF you are using some variant that does not have an ISP header
  1. Take the ATMEL-ICE and connect the cable with the labeled pins to the plug labeled “AVR”
  2. Connect the wires to your board as per page 21 of the ATMEL-ICE user guide
Now regardless of board follow these steps
  1. Plug in the ATMEL-ICE and your board so both have power. The ATMEL-ICE does NOT provide power to the board.
  2. Open Microchip Studio and go to Tools>Device Programming
  3. Choose the ATMEL-ICE for the Tool, your controller for device (for me 2560) and ISP for the Interface then hit apply.
  4. Now hit Read on the device signature. If all went well, you should now see an ID and a voltage up top and a new menu. If not check your wiring.
  5. Under Fuses set the following fuses to high
    a. JTAGEN
    b. BOOTRST
    c. OCDEN
    Then hit program.
  6. To make sure the fuses are set correctly, unplug your board, plug it back in and repeat steps 4-6. Under fuses you should now see those fuses set to HIGH when you read.
Great that’s the first part done now to connect the ATMEL-ICE in JTAG mode
  1. Search your microcontrollers datasheet until you find what pins are used for JTAG. In case of the Atmega2560 these can be found on page 85 of the datasheet.
  2. Now connect them to the corresponding pins of the ATMEL-ICE using the cable with the labeled pins plugged in to the AVR connector using the pinout on page 20 of the ATMEL-ICE user guide. For me this looked like this:
    a. ATMEL ICE Pin 1 (TCK) → A4
    b. ATMEL ICE Pin 2 (GND) → GND
    c. ATMEL ICE Pin 3 (TDO) → A6
    d. ATMEL ICE Pin 4 (VCC) → 5V
    e. ATMEL ICE Pin 5 (TMS) → A5
    f. ATMEL ICE Pin 9 (TDI) → A7
I did not need the rest of the pins.
Now for the actual debugging:
  1. Compile the project you want to debug in PlatformIO, making sure you have set the following parameters in the platformio.ini
    a. "build_type = debug" This tells pio to build in debug mode
    b. "debug_build_flags = -g -ggdb -Og -Wl,-Map,output.map" These parameters make it so the resulting .elf file contains all the necessary information for debugging and also creates a map file with all linked files paths.
  2. Locate the resulting firmware.elf and copy the path. It should be under: YOUR_PROJECT_DIRECTORY\.pio\build\BOARD_NAME hint: you can right-click on the .pio directory in PlatformIO under the explorer tab and open it from there.
  3. Open Microchip Studio and under File>Open>Open File for Debugging, enter the path to open the firmware.elf file. Name your Project and click next.
  4. Choose your chip (for me the AtMega2560) and confirm
  5. If all went well, a window should open showing various file paths. Quite probably, some files are reported missing. We will add them in the next step. Just confirm everything and continue
  6. On the right, you should now see a tab called “Solution Explorer” and an open solution. Right-click on the solution and choose Ad>NewSolutionFolder. Name your Folder src. Repeat this to create folders called include and ArduinoFiles. Now right-click the src folder and choose Add>ExistingItem. Now navigate to the src folder of the pio project you are trying to debug and mark all files and hit add. Do the same, but with the folder include. Now we need to add all the Arduino files. These are located under C:\Users\USERNAME\.platformio\packages\framework-arduino-avr\cores\arduino.
  7. Next, we need to tell Microchip studio what debugger we are using. Click on Debug>PROJECTNAME Properties and then navigate to Tool there select Atmel-ICE and JTAG as the interface. You can now close this window.
  8. Finally, open your main from the src folder we created and set a breakpoint on the first line of the main loop by clicking in the gray bar left of the code. Now to debug, hit the small green arrow in the toolbar. The project should build (this takes some time) and the start and halt where you set the breakpoint. All code should be recognized (no red squiggly lines, otherwise you forgot to include some files in step 6.) Now you can debug to your hearths content ! If this is not the case, check your wiring.
IMPORTANT NOTES:
  1. The files we added in step 6 are linked. That means if you change something here it gets changed in the original files so be careful!
  2. If you make changes to your code, you need to recompile and re-upload from PlatformIO. Atmel Studio should see some files changed and prompt you to do a reload. For some reason this throws an error message but so for I just hit ok and ignored it and everything seems to work as intended after.

2023.06.02 12:24 leafynospleens How much money does a VS Code extension make ?

Well no one really knows,
some extensions that are considered successful are
yes but what does this have to do with anything ?
You might think that the VS Code extension marketplace has been cornered, but I think with Wix
introducing the Codux IDE there will be a new untapped marketplace for IDE extensions.
If you could go back to 2015 and make GitLens or Prettier would you do it ?
That is why I am developing https://codux.tools which will extend the functionality of @CoduxIDE with the following features.

2023.06.02 12:24 xxxxfactor Q&A on Keystone‘s firmware - Week of 6/2/2023

Hi guys, I've noticed that many of you have raised numerous questions about Keystone Wallet. I prepared a Q&A based on your questions in case there are other ppl also interested in reading this. Today’s topic is about Keystone’s firmware.

Q1: Does the firmware have access to the seed in Keystone?
A: The answer is NO. To make sure there's no access of the firmware, we have made our firmware open-sourced for the whole community to examine that we didn’t have any backdoors or misconduct from ourselves. The firmwares are released by Keystone official to ensure that no malicious third party can get into your device. We also use QR code data transmission which is transparent and verifiable to prove that there’s no secrets inside the data.

Q2: How does Keystone prevent from the installation of a tampered firmware?
A: When we load a new firmware onto the SD card, our Keystone performs a series of verifications to ensure its integrity. Here's a breakdown of the steps involved:
  1. Checksum Calculation: Our device first calculates the checksum of the new firmware. This checksum can be compared with the one provided on the Keystone website. By verifying that the calculated checksum matches the one on the website, we can ensure the firmware's integrity.
  2. Signature Verification: Next, our device verifies the signature of the new firmware to make sure it is from Keystone's official sources.
If we were to load a tampered firmware onto our device, it would fail these verification checks, alerting us to potential security risks.

Q3: We use Micro SD card to update the firmware. It's downloaded on the PC / Laptop and transferred to the SD and then firmware is updated. Is there any chance of security risk if the laptop / PC is already infected?
A: The hacker mainly wants to get the seed phrase if the firmware is infected. It can be realized with these few points:
  1. Get access to the serial port cause it is the only access to the secure element and operating system communication which has been protected with elaborate security measures. Meanwhile, the seed phrase will never leave the secure element. However, it's hardly impossible to get access to it.
  2. Without the user's password it cannot read the mnemonic. Besides, Keystone never generated transactions, only sign the outside ones by reading the QR code.
In conclusion, It's difficult to attack via a MicroSD card and we have already taken precautions. If the codes don't follow this blockchain commons protocol, they won't be read by Keystone. https://github.com/BlockchainCommons/bc-ur
Also, Keystone will decode the QR codes into a human-readable format so users can check the details by themselves. And Keystone can only recognize the upgrade firmware package which is cryptographically signed by us. If a hacker put hacked firmware into the microSD card through the PC, the Keystone device will examine the signature of the firmware package which will lead to failure.

Currently we're thinking of doing Q&A session where we can cover one topic or several each week depending on your main questions. We'd love to hear your thoughts on this idea and if there are any specific topics/features you'd like us to dive into. Thanks for taking the time to read this post and feel free to comment your thoughts:)

Hi me and my friends have a private ark server on fjordur and our dino spawns (especially giga) have been garbage. I'm starting to think it has to do with us having our spawn rate too high. Does anyone have any solutions?

2023.06.02 12:02 BushidoCougar Question about categories and privacy

hello, so i have 4 categories in my discord server. 2 of them when i created them i had them as non private and the other 2 as private, so any new member in my server could only see the 2 non private ones.
Later today, i made the 2 private categories as non-private (i unchecked the private mark from the permission menu of the category edit function).
For "some" reason, these 2 categories are still invisible to new members. I also checked the advanced permissions for _everyone in all my categories and have exactly the same presets, no differences.
