WASHINGTON – FAMM President Kevin Ring released the following statement in response to the Bureau of Prisons’ release of a new rule implementing the Earned Time Credit provisions of the First Step Act of 2018:
“Attorney General Garland and the Justice Department turned lemons into lemonade,” Ring said. “We’re already hearing directly from joyous people benefitting from this change — families across the country are going to be reunited.
“While Congress unwisely restricted the number of people who could benefit from the Earned Time Credit, the Justice Department today made clear that it will implement the provisions boldly and expansively, so that thousands of people will benefit. Many more will be encouraged going forward to participate in rehabilitative programming that will reduce recidivism and make the country safer.”
When the rule was first proposed, FAMM argued for a broad reading of the program in our public comment. Many of the concerns we raised were addressed with changes made to the final rule. We are pleased to see these changes that include:
1. Allowing eligible individuals to earn 10-15 days of credit for every 30-day period that they successfully participate in recommended programming or productive activities based on their risk and needs assessment 2. Individuals on home confinement and in halfway houses, not just those in BOP facilities, are eligible to earn those same credits 3. People are being awarded credits retroactively, based on their activities from December 21, 2018, with certain limitations.
FAMM continues to believe that, as designed, the First Step Act’s earned time credit provisions fail many of the people who should benefit. They exclude too many people because of the offense they committed and fail to target programming to those who would most benefit from it. Racial disparity is a byproduct of the risk assessment tool.
For nearly three decades, FAMM has united the voices of affected families, the formerly incarcerated, and a range of stakeholders and advocates to fight for a more fair and effective justice system. FAMM’s focus on ending a one-size-fits-all punishment structure has led to reforms to sentencing and prison policies at the state and federal level and is paving the way to programs that support rehabilitation for the 94% of all prisoners who will return to our neighborhoods one day.

A lot to unpack, and I will try to keep the rant to a minimum; though I’m sure some who read this may be here specifically for it (I know that’s why I read many of these posts). I’ll try not to disappoint…
First, for perspective here’s a very brief profile of the business: The company is privately owned and operates on every continent. Global headcount over 40k but I work specifically for our US operations (10k employees, $12b revenue last year & on pace for $14b this year).
FP&A team: I was hired as a financial analyst 2 years ago via internal promotion within the company. I interviewed with the previous Director of FP&A who was doubling the size of the team, (at the direction of the CFO). However she left the company and a new FP&A director was brought in. Fortunately for me, the departing boss gave my resume and her recommendation to the new one, and that’s how I got here.
Unfortunately, the “new” boss is a micromanager with a short temper and unrealistic expectations. Over the last year, all of my ‘co-analysts’ and an FP&A dedicated data scientist have quit. All citing our boss as the reason.
Despite the mass exodus I remained, and dedicated even more time into work. I was determined to prove those quitters wrong, and eager to earn the respect of my boss; who despite my previous descriptions, has a very good financial mind and great experience to learn from.
Naturally, when half of your established team leaves and nobody replaces them, you “inherit” some additional responsibility. I was not thrilled by this, but took on the challenge without argument. I sounded my concern over fast approaching deadlines and made numerous necessary adjustments to monthly reports. cutting out the ‘fat’, automating what I could and making sure we could get accurate information out to leadership on time.
Over the last 2 months I have stepped up my game, and put in more hours than before. We usually work 45-50 per week, but I’ve been pushing 60; and with month end close ongoing I’ve been working 15+ hours per day in June. Despite my warning regarding unrealistic deadlines with our short handed team, my boss pushed up all reporting by 1 day. As the only analyst left standing, that means I have ~3x the work as I did a few months earlier (and 1 less day to do it all).
That brings me to todays bullshit: Last night, I worked until midnight and got to work 3 hours early this morning, all to ensure the first of my new deadlines was met. Today I had 3 hours of review scheduled with my boss, for three separate reports. This was time she scheduled and already moved twice to work on something else. She missed the last 2 meetings without warning (this is the norm for her). Despite that, I stayed late and continued to work until a previously communicated hard stop. I pinged her to remind her that I had to leave, but told her I would be back online in 15 minutes once I was home if she had time to review then.
(Reminder, this was already an hour after normal “closing hours”. Everyone else already left the office and I already communicated to my boss I had to be somewhere else).
I got home, and as promised got back online and worked for another 30 minutes. After not getting a call I figured we would connect in the morning and shifted focus to my personal, after hours commitment.
5 minutes later I missed a call from my boss and made the mistake of opening and reading her email she sent moments after I signed off. She described how disappointing it was that I wasn’t committed and how unprofessional it was to leave without talking to her about my reports (the two meetings she entirely blew off were I guess defaulted to 6:30 pm??). She told me that if I want to “grow” I need to show more commitment and dedication to the team. If I had been out blowing off work, I might have felt guilty, but having sacrificed entire DAYS worth of my personal time to help dig this team out of the hole she created, I felt nothing but anger and betrayal.
I collected myself enough to write her a reply expressing my surprise and disappointment with her blowing me off only to come back hours later criticizing MY commitment. I attached the reports that we were supposed to review and sent it off. She replied doubling down on her stance, but “thanked me for my hard work”. I signed off and have been seriously considering contacting HR.
Rant over.
On to advice: I’m fairly young in my FP&A career and definitely suffer from a lack of confidence. I always play devils advocate and give my employer more than they probably deserve. But after this exchange it is tough for me to continue to blame myself. I know finance can be a cut throat field, and I expected to have to kiss a lot of ass and shovel tons of shit, but I am beginning to question if this is normal, or beyond toxic.
Please, those with some more experience than myself, confirm that the grass is just as shit brown on the other side, or wake me up to the truth that I’m being taken advantage of, disrespected, etc..

TL;DR I have a 20-class pass at a yoga studio that I’m trying to use as much of as possible before the passes expire. I’m determined not to pay the ADHD tax. Tonight I arrived just a little too late and was denied entry to the class but they were going to charge me for it. I'm seeking some comfort as this was, emotionally, a huge setback on my goal.
Two weeks ago, an alert went off on my phone that had 1 month left on my yoga 20-pass I bought last June. After looking it up I was shocked to discover that I’d only used 8 out of 20. This meant I only had. 17 days to use 12 yoga passes. I think I spent half an hour sitting at my desk at work, freaking out. The value of these classes is about $200.
After I’d processed that I said NO. I will NOT pay the ADHD tax on this. So I looked at my calendar and I devised a plan to make time over the following couple weeks to make time for these yoga classes. As of this morning I’d used 4 out of 12 and was feeling good, but I hit a setback today.
A lot of classes start at five and I normally finish work at five. But I make my own hours. So, I carefully devised a plan together to make sure I left work on time to get to the class.
EXPECTATION
3:30pm. Start my Leaving Work routine (I have an app for this)
4:00pm. Travel to yoga.
4:30pm. Join a meeting remotely from my phone.
4:55pm. Leave the meeting and go to class.
Midway through the afternoon, my co-worker changed the meeting from 4: 30 to 4. Okay, no problem.
REVISED EXPECTATION
4:00pm. Join meeting and do my routine to leave work at the same time.
4:30pm. Leave work to get to yoga.
5:00pm. Arrive at yoga.
And of course, what actually happened…
REALITY
4:00pm. Meeting is postponed 10 minutes.
4:10pm. join the meeting.
4:36pm. Meeting ends late. Thanks to time blindness, this is the moment I realized that I was behind schedule.
4:44pm. Leave the office.
4:55pm. Thanks to a construction detour, I'm stuck in a traffic jam. Several minutes away from the yoga studio. I was about to start crying, but calmed myself down by saying “I could just slip in the back a couple minutes late, nobody would care”. I couldn't do anything about it, so I should just accept that it was going to take longer.
5:03 pm. Get out of the car and sprint to class.
5:04 pm. Burst into the lobby to an instructor, only to hear the first person I see tell me “The instructor wanted me to tell you that you’re too late. The class has already started and you aren’t able to join.”
Cue a meltdown in front of a (definitely NT) yoga instructor. I am working so hard to carve out time for these classes, and seeing this time block get wasted on account of 4 minutes was heartbreaking. It meant I’d have to find a way to make time for another class, on top of the ones I already have to squeeze in. The instructor was actually very nice about it, she got me some water and after I’d composed myself she ended up transferring my “missed class” fee to a 5:30 class.
The thing that makes me the most sad is how PRECISE it all is, you know? I worked my ASS off to be there on time, but in some situations, part marks don’t matter. Even though I worked it out this time, years of being late means that every time it happens it seems like the whole room is matter-of-factly saying “Good people show up on time. Your tardiness proves that you’re disrespectful, irresponsible, and that you don’t care about this. You deserve punishment for your moral failing.”
I’m trying to focus on the win: in spite of all this, I managed to go to two classes tonight, and I didn’t end up getting charged for the missed class. Now I have 7 classes to go to in 11 days. It’s so easy to let this kind of embarrassment prevent me from trying to go, but I’m not going to give up. Yet.

So there I was, home from school on a hot day and was sitting in this same spot on my laptop (watchin Markiplier play Security Breach) My brother (btw I have 2 older brothers one which is the oldest and I'll refer to as A is 28 the other who is also older than me who I'll refer to as G is 26 so basically I have 0 chance in a fight seeing as I'm only 15) A was taking out 2 doggos because for some reason he takes out his own dog and ties up my brother's because he's a terrier mix who's tiny.
Anywho SO we take out 3 dogs (3rd one is my sister's J take that one out and she pays me) at 7:00 a:m before school 12:00 p:m when my siblings are home for lunch break at 3:30 p:m when I get home from school (A works at the school so he gets home at the same time I do) and lastly at 7:00 p:m (FINALLY I can get on with what happened) So it's 6:20 p:m and A takes out the 2 dogs so he can get to playin his online games and because G's dog was whining so he goes outside and after like 4 min G gets home from work immediately coming in the door he brings in his dog (cuz he's tied up) and says "Why is Rafiki (thas his name) tied up if it's barely gonna be 6:30" My dad who is in the room (btw he's oldish like 50's) says "Rafiki was whining" G then responds with an attitude I might add "Well where's A?" Which my dad responds with "Outside with shenzi" (thas A's dog) G then responds with "Rafiki was probably whining because A was taking out his dog I then respond with "Rafiki was whining before A got the leash"
G then immediately leaves but then quickly returns when A comes back in with Shenzi. Then says "So now A (A is the other brother btw remember) do you think this guy (he points at me) should have an opinion about when MY dog has to go out if when I tell him to take out Atlas (my sister's dog) he doesn't give a poop" he said it the other way tho I respond with "Hey the reason I don't care when you tell me to take him out sometimes is cuz he already went out he then responds with "Then why the poop are you running your mouth? Your opinion doesn't matter I then responded "I didn't give an opinion I gave a fact, Rafiki was whining BEFORE A got the leash" G and A now against me start dragging the argument on with and with anything I said they would just respond with something along the lines of "You didn't have a say in the conversation" or "Nobody cares about your opinion" and at one point G just flat out admitted it and said "I might be tired from work but I'll sit here and argue with you all day" I then said "Fine I'll just butt out of conversations like that which don't matter to me" Which he responds with "See now you're just trying to get the last word" which A agreed with. Me just tired and hot because it was 93 degrees just shut my mouth and went back to my video they then left and I was left with my dad and we were just like, wtf and my dad said "And those to are adults" which I nodded to and we just continued with our day this was alot you deserve a 3-day weekend.
