Hello all,
For the past 3 months, I have been looking into different potential SUV upgrades. I live in Canada where winters can be rough. My FWD Venue has been somewhat reliable, but its limits were seriously tested during a couple of Quebec snowstorms last winter... Hence why I'd like to move onto something more... reliable.
As background, I always wanted a "rugged" car just for the looks. As a teen, I dreamt of driving a Wrangler. I'm not the kind of outdoorsman who will take his SUV in the mud or up hills. My vehicle gets me from point A to B (my daily driver), is exclusively for city driving and some highways on weekends. I'd like a 4 door / 5 seater. Higher up. AWD. Nice indoor tech. Fuel efficiency is a mid level factor (hybrid is a plus).
Currently, I am paying 145$ (tax in) bi-weekly and my lease ends July 1st 2025. I am open to upgrading now, but I'm not really in a rush. I wouldn't mind anything up to 500$ (tax in) bi-weekly. By then, I will have completed my medical residency and have a significantly higher salary.
SUVs I am interested in :

Ford Bronco OuterBanks w/ Lux Package : After my searches, it was my #1. It looks awesome. The indoor tech is stellar (12 inch screen). Outside, it's a badass tank. However, I am not used to driving something that big. I don't mind transitioning to something in between before eventually settling for this truck
Ford Bronco Sport Badlands (with all the tech bells and whistles) : I found this to be an interesting alternative. Big, but not too big. Handles better. Better fuel efficiency than the Bronco. Drives similarly to my Venue, but with the additional height. Still looks impressive
Jeep Wrangler Sahara Altitude : my teenage dream car. In reality, I found it to be very sluggish. Tough drive. Uncomfortable. I was disappointed to say the least... but that was after 1 test drive. Maybe other models are better? I'd have to see for myself. The plug-in hybrid model is also an interesting trim.

I am open to suggestions. The reason why I decided to post here is because I tend to be fixated on what I find interesting without looking outwards. However, I know that I am quite open minded and curious when something is proposed... I need to broaden my horizons.
I've seen a lot of positive comments with regards to the RAV4. Although I'm not a fan of the outer look, if the quality of the vehicle is there, I might look further into it and go for a test drive. Lastly, I read some online rumors about a potential Bronco Sport Hybrid coming out in 2024. If true, that choice would be quite enticing.
I am available to answer any further questions and to engage with the community. I apologize if there lack proper organization in my post.

Hello - I bought a plug in hybrid car recently and am starting to have an issue with my HOA. I live in a 10 unit building in Chicago and my HOA just reached out that they were going to begin charging me $50/month for using the community outlet in the garage to charge my vehicle.
There is no rule or guideline anywhere about fees to use the outlet. Further, my car tracks how many kWh it uses and where, so I can provide exact usage and combine that with the average kwh charges, pay for my usage. To give you an idea, if I do 10x the kwh charge, I would only owe ~$14 for May - my wife and I don't exactly drive a lot.
I suggested this, but I'm curious if I have any recourse if they claim $50 is the fee but it isn't listed in any rules we have.
Appreciate the help and hope they're reasonable!
Edit - They're basing the $50 off a KBB article about cost of charging an electric vehicle using national averages. Also, the entire building votes on new rules. HOA cannot add new rules, only determine when to spend for critical repairs.

Went to multiple Toyota and Hyundai (rav 4/ Highlander & Santa Fe/Tuscan hybrids) dealerships to test drive cars listed in their inventory on their websites. Either have 0 hybrids and are on back order for 1 year + like Toyota rav4’s, hylander hybrid 3-6 months. While I confirmed I was coming to look at Hyundai Santa Fe Was told Hyundai had one hybrid Tuscan to test drive, had been to so many dealers and got confused on the packages. Wanted a hybrid suv with sunroof. Was told the model w/sunroof was 6 months on back order implying non sunroof model is available. I totaled my car (other drivers fault) so didn’t necessarily have 6 months to wait, well it’s the xrt not a hybrid. I have had it 3 days I feel like I was explicit in wanting a hybrid then realized when looking at gas/mileage it’s regular fuel. What do I do? I feel so dumb.

For reference, all of this takes place in California.
I purchased a new 2023 plug-in hybrid vehicle in February of this year. I took said vehicle in to the dealership for a 5000 mile oil change covered under a service contract this past saturday (6/3/23).
When I went back to pick up my vehicle, they told me that a piece of plastic broke off their oil transfer container and was poured into my engine. The plastic was sitting on top, they attempted to remove it with tweezers and knocked it further into the engine.
The service advisor told me that they’d have to wait until Monday (6/5/23) for the heavy engine tech to come in and unseal my valve cover to pull the plastic out. The tech would then have to reseal it and let it cure for 24 hours, so the earliest my vehicle would be ready is today (6/6/23).
The dealer provided me with a rental car that was not a plug in hybrid. I was able to get in writing that they would waive my gas usage on the rental. I figured no problem, I’ll use the car for the weekend, it’s not a huge deal.
Today (6/6/23) comes around and I call for a status update. The service advisor tells me that the plastic wasn’t under the valve cover, and it wasn’t in my oil pan. They are now going to unseal and remove the timing belt cover and remove the high pressure fuel pump. Apparently once the high pressure pump is removed it needs to be replaced by a new one with a fresh seal. However, this part is backordered from Kia and the dealer said they need to hold my car indefinitely.
My question is: Do I have any grounds for a new car to be provided?

the dealer messed up an oil change, how can I trust them to disassemble and repair an engine?
I now have lost the factory seals, tolerances, and torques on my engine through no fault of my own
The dealership is holding my car for an indefinite period of time

I am unsure if I have grounds for a diminished value claim because of this engine disassembly?
I also don’t know if it takes greater than 30 days to source the part, so I qualify for the lemon law? I’m unsure if dealer error qualifies because the lemon law is based on manufacturer warrant.

Reset the trip and the mpg when the refuel message came on. I've been driving on HV more for over 100 miles (3 gallons worth of gas). I'm still not out of gas. This reserve is a bit excessive and it only becomes a problem for me when towing. That's why I wanted to find out how much is actully downthere, or if the tank simply has issues taken gas in like some of the hybrid models. Is seems the issue with primes is different. It takes the gas no problem, but the fuel gauge should be scaled better. I know these vehicles have lots of reserve for a good reaso, but 3-4 gallons???

I have a 2021 Elantra SEL convenience and tech package. It's a lease and I have 25k miles on year 2. I am debating either buying it or trading in. Buyout is $17k. Trade in probably only works for another Hyundai or else I have to pay the buyout fee. I was looking at hybrids but not many give the mpg as the Elantra. I am also 6'1 and the Elantra can be annoying to get in and sit in at times.

So I'm trading in my Rav4 Prime and was pretty sold on the 350h. I then come to find the hybrid is pretty much non existent at the moment.
I was given a solid trade price on my lease with a year left on it.
Are we going to see an influx in hybrids anytime soon? The gas mileage difference seems nuts. A lot of people are reporting 15-20 mpg on the gas model and that is just too low for me. The hybrid gets closer to 30-35.
MSRP seems really close to on the bas models if I could find one too.

As electric and fuel-efficient vehicles become more ubiquitous, it’s become necessary to release a vehicle mileage tax that promises to be more effective than the traditional gas tax. The details are still unknown, yet it’s obvious that the government is going to implement some changes.
Since the Highway Trust Fund is predicted to thin out by the end of 2021, the issue at stake is quite urgent. Even though it’s not likely that car mileage tax will go into force during the year, we might see the first steps in the process soon enough.
The new tax arises a lot of questions: what does it imply? Is it truly promising or will it burden the wallets of Americans? Below we’ll answer all of these questions and clarify this initiative as much as we can.

WHAT IS VEHICLE MILEAGE TAX?

Vehicle miles traveled (VMT) levy is the initiative that would tax drivers by the number of miles they travel. Instead of charging them depending on their fuel consumption, it would collect the mileage data and distribute taxes accordingly.
The money collected via tax by the mile would be spent on improving the infrastructure. According to Pete Buttigieg, the Transportation Secretary, this tax is certainly under discussion in the light of the Infrastructure Plan that Joe Biden proposed.
Despite the fact that the expenditures of infrastructure are exceeding the revenues of the Highway Trust Fund, the Federal Government hasn’t reformed the fuel tax since 1993. The states themselves have increased the gas levy and tried to update taxes to make up for the shortfalls in the budget.
However, it’s obvious that the changes are necessary on the federal level, especially if the Congress approves Biden’s Infrastructure Plan. The President wants the US to improve its infrastructure, which includes modernizing 20,000 miles of roads and improving 10,000 bridges. Naturally, such extensive works would need funding, which has to be collected via taxes.
Vehicle miles traveled tax is shifting focus towards the consumer. Namely, it captures the maintenance costs of the highway and targets people who use the roads the most. It also happens to be a more modern approach, considering the fact that the number of electric vehicles is increasing. Moreover, newer cars have higher mpg (miles per gallon), which decreases the revenue that would be collected from fuel tax. Let’s look at the numbers: on the federal level, gas tax per VMT was 1.51 cents in 1994 compared to 0.75 cents in 2018. According to the research conducted by Tax Foundation, if such a trend continues (and it likely will), the differences in taxes would amount to $7.7 billion.

VMT VS MOTOR FUEL TAX

Motor fuel tax is a levy that collects a fee on fuel, including gasoline, diesel, and gasohol. In most cases, this tax is collected depending on the gallons of fuel a person uses. Since it’s not collected from the final price the consumer pays, it rarely increases unless the tax rate is enhanced.
Even though certain states have increased their gas mileage taxes, the revenue is still less than the expenses that are needed to maintain the highways and roads. This approach aims to tax those who use the roads, however, it’s not self-sufficient anymore.
Considering the fact that fuel efficiency increases and electric cars are starting to occupy our roads, people are using less fuel. In other words, fuel gas tax is eroding as it’s failing to serve the main function it has.

Difference between VMT and Motor Fuel Tax

The main difference between VMT and motor fuel tax is that the former levies mileage and affects all cars equally regardless of their fuel efficiency, while the latter focuses on gas consumption and charges low mpg vehicles with higher taxes.
The world’s focus on alternative fuel isn’t going to shift anywhere else due to all the environmental issues. If the motor fuel tax remains the same, the chances are the federal government will constantly have to find funds elsewhere.
The federal government has two options if it wants to solve the shortfalls in the Highway Trust Fund: it has to increase motor fuel tax or substitute it with the mileage tax.
Implementing VMT won’t be an easy process and will require a lot of manpower and finances. However, it seems to be more suitable for modern vehicles. After all, it’s aimed at improving the infrastructure.
Oregon and California have already launched pilot programs and other states are following. The federal government is open to the changes with Pete Buttigieg showing its support.

WHY DO WE NEED A VEHICLE MILEAGE TAX?

Because the motor fuel tax is eroding and can’t cover the expenditures any more. Plus, now is the perfect timing – the Fixing America’s Surface Transportation Act (FAST Act) is expiring this year. This means that the federal government has to come up with a new plan to make sure the Highway Trust Fund doesn’t thin out.
Don’t get me wrong, motor fuel tax isn’t a bad thing. It had its own purpose that prioritized alternative fuel over petroleum. The tax dealt with the negative effects of pollution and traffic congestion. Besides, the motor fuel tax was quite successful at reversing the negative side effects of automobiles.
But as time passes by and fuel consumption decreases, it’s losing its meaning in its current form. Therefore, we need changes and the pay-per-mile tax could be one.
Once again, I’m not saying that tax by the mile is a flawless solution – it certainly has its drawbacks. But if we want to continue funding the roads and renovating the infrastructure, we don’t really have a choice.
The federal government has to make a decision and the chances are they will shift their support towards the VMT tax.

HOW WOULD VEHICLE MILEAGE TAX BE IMPLEMENTED?

According to the research conducted by the Tax Foundation, the federal government has two ways of implementing the vehicle mileage tax. They can choose a simple but less effective method or a more complex yet more efficient way.

A simple way

A simple way of implementing the car mileage tax would be to create a flat rate for all vehicles. Taxes would be differentiated depending on the weight and the number of axles. The reason is simple – the heavier the car, the more damage it causes to the road. Vice versa, the wear, and tear on the roads reduce with the number of axles.

Even though a flat rate seems to be simpler to implement, it has certain drawbacks. It would be hard to levy those who travel from state to state. They would cause damage to the roads of both states, however, they would only pay taxes in the state they reside in.
Another issue is that tax by the mile wouldn’t be effective if it were implemented at the state level only. Pilot programs such as the OReGo in Oregon showcase the limitations of the new tax system. There’s only so much you can figure out with voluntary GPS tracking.

A more complex route

A more complex route includes detailed GPS tracking. Even though it would need more resources, it would be more efficient. Namely, people who live in rural areas would essentially pay more money. Since they cause more damage to the roads and produce more pollution, it makes sense that their taxes would be higher.
As a result, they would have to decide if the travel was truly worth the money.
The problem with a complex route is that it could become too complicated both for the states and taxpayers. This would reduce transparency and make it impossible to collect taxes properly.
Probably the best way to implement vehicle miles traveled tax would be to find a silver lining between these two approaches. Though it wouldn’t be easy, it’s necessary to come up with an optimal solution. Otherwise, the new tax system might collapse.

OPPOSING ARGUMENTS TO THE VEHICLE MILEAGE TAX

As mentioned, mileage tax isn’t perfect and certain groups have concerns about it. As much as we’d like to ignore them, they are quite real. They certainly have to be addressed before the tax gets implemented.

Privacy and data security concerns

Privacy and data security concerns will be especially worrisome if GPS tracking is in the project. I’ll be honest – I would have a hard time agreeing to the idea of the government knowing the location of my vehicle all the time. But arguably, these issues can be tackled.
The pilot program, OReGo, for instance, deletes the collected data after 30 days. Limiting the data collection only to necessary information could potentially reduce the privacy security concerns.
There could also be a private company that would act as a middleman. They would collect the GPS data and control what information is transferred to the government.

Environmental concerns

Environmental groups worry that VMT might decrease the popularity of fuel-efficient and electric vehicles, and promote the use of petroleum cars. The motor fuel tax was quite efficient in tackling environmental issues, but with the new tax system, those cars that have higher emissions might not pay taxes at all. They might be eligible for the tax allowance, which could be detrimental to the environment.

The shift in burden towards fuel-efficient vehicles

If the new tax system becomes official or if the federal government comes up with a hybrid model, fuel-efficient vehicles would suffer the most. They would essentially have to pay more taxes, which can hinder the voting process for the bill.

Higher expenses

Compared to the motor fuel tax, the new tax system would be quite costly to implement. The states would need to send specific hardware to the car-owners to track their mileage. The federal government would have to monitor more than 268 million vehicles, which is certainly extensive work.

CAN VEHICLE MILEAGE TAX INCREASE THE NUMBER OF MILEAGE FRAUD?

Potentially, people who wouldn’t be willing to pay taxes would find ways to reduce their fees, which might include committing mileage fraud. Even if the government sends out specific devices, it will be hard to verify whether the mileage is accurate or not.
The accuracy of the mileage would be even harder to check if the data about traveled miles was collected from the cars themselves.
The tools that change vehicle’s mileage are quite widespread these days. They are cheaper than the expense that a higher tax would cause. Odometer fraud is already a prevalent issue and I’m afraid it would become even more serious if the pay-per-mile comes into force.
People usually use two tools to reduce the numbers on their odometer. The first of them is the Odometer Correction Tool. The device can reprogram the trip meter, however, it can’t alter the existing data in control units. It’s unlikely that people will use such a unit – the information about mileage will probably be pulled from the internal storage, not the odometer.
It’s more likely that they will use the Mileage Blocker instead. But how does it work? – it stops recording the mileage in all control units. It’s far more efficient in the sense that its performance is impossible to detect. The device has easy DIY Installation instruction that will save your time and money. Essentially, the VMT might solve one problem but it might increase another. We just have to decide what our priorities are. I don’t think that the government will fail the new tax system just because of this problem, but we still must be aware of it and prepare accordingly.

FINAL TAKEAWAY

Nobody can claim that tax by the mile is a perfect system. It’s still necessary to discuss all the details and weigh its drawbacks and benefits. We still don’t know if the US will adopt a new law, but the chances are the federal government will introduce the changes.
Keeping in mind the erosion of the current motor fuel tax, it seems like we’ll have to sacrifice certain things to implement a better tax system.

Here are all of the new US CHAdeMO (Leaf fast-charging) stations that rolled out in May 2023, according to the U.S. Department of Energy.
There were 124 "new" CHAdeMOs added in May. To put it in perspective, there were 112 CHAdeMO chargers added in April. I think the pace of CHAdeMO rollout has stabilized, while the pace of CCS rollout is still increasing. This makes sense given that only Nissan still makes a CHAdeMO car.
Some of these chargepoints will be "refreshes," e.g. the provider replaced them with faster chargers etc. Some may be incorrect. This report is only as good as the Alternative Fuels Data Center data.
We all know that CHAdeMO is a legacy format and will eventually go away, but clearly Nissan and their partners are continuing to support it for the time being. This shouldn't be surprising. After all, you can still buy a new Leaf.

Here are all of the new US CCS (Level 3 fast-charging) stations that rolled out in May 2023, according to the Department of Energy. These chargers are suitable for most new EVs on the market, except for:

Tesla drivers who haven't bought the official CCS adapter yet. Certain older Teslas need additional work done to accept the adapter.
Leaf owners like me, and some owners of older cars that also use CHAdeMO. If you drive a Leaf, or an older CHAdeMO car, see my matching post in leaf.

There were 222 CCS charge points added or refreshed in May 2023, which is up from 171 in April. For comparison, there were only 74 new CCS charge points in May 2022. Things are speeding up.
"What about CCS charging at Tesla superchargers?" Tesla is in the process of rolling out their "magic dock" for non-Tesla cars, but so far in very few locations. If they start doing this at scale and reporting it to the Alternative Fuels Data Center then it will be reflected here.
"What about Ford vehicles with NACS (Tesla) plugs?" They are not on sale yet. Current-generation Ford vehicles have CCS plugs. The next generation will have NACS (Tesla) plugs, but will also support CCS via an adapter.

2023.06.06 12:26 No-Profit-2597 Did I make a mistake buying a new car?

Hey! Just purchased a new 2023 Hyundai Tucson Hybrid SEL Conv the other day and now I'm posting here at 3am with buyers remorse. I financed the car for $680/month (5.9% for 60 months. Im aware that dealerships don't take returns but I'm messaging you all to see my options. I could afford the car but I will need to budget and I feel that if I need to budget to afford this car then maybe I shouldn't have the car haha. It seemed like a very doable payment at the time but now Any advice is massively appreciated! I have no other loans or debts

2023.06.06 10:50 dizzy2kk AMD graphics driver crashes once a day and I cant find the problem

Background Applications: I use a lot of Discord, Chrome, World of Warcraft and steam
Description of Original Problem: More or less regularly but at least once every 1-2 days my graphics driver crahses. I have a short screen freeze and it goes black for a second and then returns back to normal with an AMD driver crash message. This also sometimes crashes the game im in at the time and also terminates Discord. It also happened twice that the crash completely killed the graphics driver and the PC only worked on windows graphics until I reinstalled the driver.
Troubleshooting: I have already reinstalled the driver several times by also using the cleanup tool in safe mode beforehand. I even tried the PRO driver, which also did not change anything. I checked for any eco mode buttons on my power supply and also made sure all the cables and the card itself are plugged in correctly. The AMD support also suggested all these steps, which did not help. I then asked a local PC store to test my system for me and after 24 hours they told me the system is healthy and they could not reproduce the error. I am quite sure that someone with some experience in the field can somehow derive from all of this what the problem might be but I cant. Is it some of the software I use? Can it maybe be one of the two monitors that I use or that they somehow arent compatible? Could it be the bluetooth headset which I connect with the PC via usb? Would you guys recommend refunding the graphics card?

I initially was comparing Toyota Prius vs Hyundai Ioniq, but I decided Hyundai mostly because it is cheaper. Apple car play and comma ai were big for me too.
My options.

2019 Ioniq hybrid 188k for $11.8k
2019 Ioniq hybrid 55k for 14k (SALVAGE)
2017 Ioniq hybrid 104k for $14.5k

I understand ioniqs are not proven and discontinued... But Im willing to take the risk.
I drive 20 miles round trip, which makes me think I should get a plug in hybrid. I live in the cold, so I know the engine will turn on to keep things warm in the winter (not really, but kind of defeating the purpose of electric only range in the winter.
I do make 350 mile one way trips a couple times each winter.
I'm tempted for the salvaged car over the high mileage ones... But I don't reay have any reasons why.
Any help is greatly appreciated!
