2023.06.07 02:46 LostOnDagobah [H] Large Astra Militarum Army, Mordheim Warbands, Rare WFB DoW+Bretonnians+Misc [W] PayPal/Necrons/Tyranids [Loc] US/IL
Hello! I am clearing out the rest of my old childhood stash of collectable Games Workshop minis from the 90s-early 2000s. There are some extremely rare ones for Warhammer Fantasy (5th-6th edition) and Mordheim included in this posting, as well as a large Astra Militarum/Imperial Guard army. Everything is exactly as pictured, and I am happy to snap additional photos of any particular item upon request.
For all the smaller items I'm happy to ship across the US ($10-20) or meet locally in the Illinois-area within reason. International shipping should be around $20 USD, unless you buy a large collection of metal where it would increase slightly.
For the Astra Militarum army I'm asking $650 obo plus shipping (roughly $1250 retail). I am also willing to consider reasonable trades for Necrons or Tyranids, bonus points on the Necrons!
For online sales I'll sell through PayPal Goods & Services for everyone's peace-of-mind,. Prices are flexible (gauged from eBay) and do not include shipping.
I will do discounts for multiple purchases and will combine for cheaper shipping.

2023.06.07 02:16 Grouchy_Plant_8733 Trying to decide what I want to do
My best friends ex is a horrible human being. She has manipulated him, used him for his money, cheated on him, has been using pills the whole time they've been together, has recently started doing crack. She has a young son who she had my friend (all but legally) adopt and take care of him while she slept 18 hours a day. Then she ripped the child out of his life when they broke up causing both the child and My friend so much pain. He has never been in a "serious" (long term/living together) adult relationship before so this has him completely messed up. This has been going on for over 2 years on and off now and I'm tired of seeing her get away with the suffering she's causing. I have a photo of her and her full name but that's it. Any ideas for curse or hex i can perform to cause the most amount of harm? I'm looking for basic OR creative ideas. Anything that will get her what she deserves.

2023.06.07 02:02 simplygoblin Can you ID these for me?
| My sister got some crystals for me as a secret birthday gift and the delivery came with two extra crystals, (I’m guessing as a thank you.) the two she ordered came with an ID card but the two extra didn’t come with any identification. I’ll attach photos, one of the crystals has more details to show than the other so I’ll add more photos so you can see. The first seems like it’s in raw form and is transparent/translucent when held up to light? The second has a lot more detail and I have no idea what it could be. Any help would be much appreciated, thank you! submitted by simplygoblin to Crystals [link] [comments] |
2023.06.07 01:25 iLuvDarkHumor 24[M4F] EST/Online - "If my Grandmother had wheels, she would have been a bike"
I'm looking for long-term friendship. You don't have to like the things i do but please show an effort so we can at least try to work it out. I am from EST time zone. Not a must but similar time zones around that would work better because there'd be less time difference.
Couple of my interests:
-Metal, rock, house kinda music
-Anime, movies, and shitty reality tv shows (Kitchen nightmares, 90 day fiance, my 600lb life, extreme cheapskates etc.)
-For anime genre; isekai, action, or anything with magic basically
-Just recently started reading manga&manhwa. My first manhwa was solo leveling and it was the best (still couldn't find anything as good as that).
-I like photography as in, i basically take pics of anything (it is usually buildings, nature, or anything i think it looks cool).
-I also love Harry Potter, Fantastic Beasts, Star Wars (recently started).
-I love random photo trade like things you took pics of, random junks you found at a store etc etc.
-I have weird curiosities like how do wizards make galleons in Harry Potter? (I know they work but how does that economy run etc.)
-I have a small humanmade skull collection such as skull rings, candles, globe etc.
-I have a small pokemon card collection collection (recently started so nothing fancy or good)
Please send a chat request with introducing yourself a little

2023.06.06 18:32 ermagerditssuperman Trip report - 5 nights in Mexico
| Recently did 5 nights at an all-inclusive resort in Riviera Maya. First time going all-inclusive, needed a relaxation-focused trip. I used a Cotopaxi Tasra 16, and the Bellroy System work bag (16L). This was the first trip using the Tasra, I'd bought it literally days before at the REI members sale. I love it! Perfect for my 16" torso length. (In background - fiance used my Tom Bihn Makers Bag and Peak Design 45 travel bag. I've got enough of a bag collection for both of us now!). This is the first time I've used the Bellroy in ages, I honestly don't like it for EDC or work... But it worked OK as a travel bag, just a bit too big and cumbersome. Shout-out to the couple in front of me in security at Cancun airport, with whom I exchanged compliments on their Cotopaxi fanny packs and they on my Cotopaxi backpack. Also, I did notice one of you had a Topo Designs backpack, and I wish I'd asked which one it was cause it looked great! Read below for TMI on what I packed, and proof that I probably shop at REI too much. Photo 2 is everything liquid - I have a lot of cosmetic allergies so I don't rely on finding what I need at my destination (NYM conditioner, NYM shampoo, deodorant isn't liquid and is in this photo by accident, bacitracin because I'm allergic to neosporin and every hotel first aid kit uses that, lotion with aloe, aloe gel, itch cream, nivea face cream [didn't use], concealer [didn't use], aquaphor lip treatment, face sunscreen). Photo 3 is dry toiletries (assorted hair accessories, compostable floss, laundry soap, one tub of pills/vitamins, one of TUMS chewables [didn't use], travel toothbrush, anti chub-rub stick, deodorant, spf chapstick, solid sunscreen, solid bug-deterrant stick, body soap) Photo 4 are the toiletries my fiance packed that I used - toothpaste, face cleanser stick, his comb because I forgot mine. Photo 5 is tops (lilly pulitzer long blouse, spare bra, yellow REI running tee, blue Outdoor Afro tee, Prana black tank, REI trailmade pullover tees in both green and tropical print [LOVE these so much], a coverup wrap my mom got in Cancun 20 yrs ago) Photo 6 is swimwear (old speedo one piece, Athleta rashguard, Athleta bottoms [one of few brands I found with styles that cover my WHOLE butt], sports-bra-style top from Wild Isles [highly recommend for my fellow busty friends, this is their size 4 and I'm a 32FF. I was fully secure and fully covered at all times]). I wished I had a short sleeve rashguard, because the long one got hot but I also like to keep my shoulders protected as I burn easily. Photo 7 - a packable grocery tote we used at the beach, and a wetbag that we used to keep phones & books dry during tropical rains, and then used to hold damp swimsuits when flying home. Photo 8 - more clothes (REI trailmade amphib shorts, prana shorts, prana dress [I forgot that I would a) not have my usual under-dress skimmy shorts and b) would be eating a ton because all-inclusive, so a clingy dress was a bad idea. Wore it only once]) 9- xero sandals, this was the first time they've had significant usage and they were GREAT. Packed these, and wore Feelgrounds canvas sneakers on the plane and at dinner restaurants. 10- i got this little bag when I ordered Bombas Gripper Slippers, I have now used it on 4 trips to pack my shoes in! They fit perfectly and keep shoes isolated from my clothes. 11- all the non-clothing stuff. Bellroy classic pouch had the dry toiletries, Tom Bihn 3D OC had the liquids. Persona pouch is my Nintendo 3DS bag, didn't end up playing it though. Blue TB ghost whale pouch had chargers and earbuds (samsung galaxy buds plus), then my Bellroy Travel Wallet (the only one that can fit both my passports, dual citizen). Otter at the top is a pencil case jam packed with coloring pens, then my Owalla bottle (the hype is true, these are fantastic), hydroflask tumbler (the waiters at the pool and beach will gladly put your drinks in your own tumblers, so you can enjoy your mega Mango Tango in the sun while keeping it insulated), a Nomadix packable picnic blanket (except I accidentally packed the mini which is way too small for two people to lounge on) and lastly, the stash of books I brought. Wedding planning book, wedding planning planner, an Isaac Asmiov novel that I read a bunch at the swim-up bar, my personal notebook, and a coloring book. I colored at the beach several times and it was fantastically relaxing. 12- bellroy all packed up 13- clothes I wore on the plane (REI sahara long-sleeve [I don't know how but this kept me warm enough on the plane, yet cool enough in the hot humid weather in Mexico. May be my new favorite travel top?], Molke racerback bra in uni-verse pattern, REI trailmade pants (also LOVE, this new trailmade collection is honestly fantastic) submitted by ermagerditssuperman to HerOneBag [link] [comments] |

2023.06.06 17:41 A_horse_a_piece77 Security upgrades built into new Wisconsin driver license, ID cards
The Wisconsin Department of Transportation Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) announces new driver license and identification (ID) cards with updated security features. The new cards debut June 5 with new design elements built within the cards to make them more resistant to fraud.
“Wisconsin DMV continues to stay on the leading edge of technology by incorporating the next generation of updated security features into our driver licenses and ID cards,” WisDOT Secretary Craig Thompson said. “Our residents can be proud of the modernized new cards and also the efforts DMV takes to secure their credentials.”
The new cards feature:
- Beautiful, artistic, hard-to-replicate designs: Hand crafted artwork of key Wisconsin features – like the awe-inspiring Wisconsin State Capitol and state flag – are woven throughout, creating a more secure, customized card.
- Transparent windows visible on the card’s right edge and back bottom edge: The advanced manufacturing process allows the clear ribbon to flow right off the edge of the card and is integrated with cardholder data. Wisconsin is the first to have this unique security feature.
- A distinct ‘flipping effect:’ Looking at the embossed feature just above the ribbon, when angling the card one way, you see the secondary photo. While at another angle you see the month and year of birth. This unique feature is hard to duplicate and/or counterfeit.
- The familiar orange DONOR dot: For those who participate in the life-giving organ donation registry, the orange dot is now nestled in the larger sugar maple leaf which you can feel.
- The noticeable vertical format on cards for those under age 21 continues and will incorporate blue/red color themes for rapid visual recognition. Cards for those over age 21 are horizontal and have a blue/gold theme.
The upgraded security features will be available on regular and REAL ID cards. The fee remains the same.
“The first thing you notice is Wisconsin’s cards are even more attractive and the images celebrate the state. But built within the beautiful images and manufacturing process are layers of security features designed to protect card users and businesses who rely on their validity,” DMV Administrator Kristina Boardman said.
The laser-engraved version currently in circulation debuted in September 2015. These will remain valid until their expiration date. Cards with the new features will be issued upon renewal, replacement or first issuance. There is no requirement to get a new card but customers may replace their card with the latest features by ordering a replacement (

2023.06.06 17:35 nordic-descendant WIBTA if I turned my brother in and doomed my nephews and niece to foster care?…
My brother (34m) is going through a divorce with his skank of a wife shortly. She’s been unemployed for 6 years saying “it’s just to hard” while complaining about his 500$ a week allowance he gives her. He pays all bills. And even though they’ve talked divorce, no paperwork is filed that I’m aware of. She INTRODUCED her new boyfriend to their 4 kids and my brother. I hear everything from my mom while she prays for guidance
Now… I hate my brother. With a burning passion. He raped my sister and I for years. Sexually abusing us from ages 3-8. Got away with it by my mom covering it up. Saying he was just having a hard time adjusting to his hormones. And now. There’s no legal way for us to get him put in jail or even on a sex offenders list. Dad found out and won’t even look at my brother now. And has him blocked on everything. He’s told me that if my brother ever comes to his house to hold him back. But I don’t think I’d want to stop him from doing what I wish would have happened years ago.
For more back ground of how shitty my brother is. He got kicked out of college 2 months jn for raping the deans daughter but there wasn’t substantial evidence. He did drugs and borrowed 5k from me when I was 17$ and I never saw it again. My parents JUST finished off paying his 40k student loan 2 years ago because he screwed them over. I had to pay college out of my pocket for college because of how he fucked them over financially.
I’ve black listed him for 7 years now with only a short 3 week period where my mom begged me to talk to him last year. Where he begged for money, help, and forgiveness while I was working 3 jobs during covid to make ends meet because he was doing drugs (weed/pills) while having 4 kids to provide for. And I told him to go to hell after he said we were crazy for holding it over his head so long.
Anyways. That comment sparked a fight between me. His wife. Him. And my mom. His wife told my mom to control me. Mom told her to learn to control her kids first before butting her head into another families matter and I well. I told them to eat shit and I hope they both flop off a bridge.
Now. I don’t know if she has the capabilities to have the kids. Because she can’t provide for them and she’s neglective to them because she wants everything to herself. I haven’t seen them in years. but I’ve seen photos via FB and I see a lot of inconsistencies with her posts on their treatment. But I also don’t want my brother to have them because I’m scared of what he may do to them based on what he did to me and my sister. I know he’d loose all chance if I speak up. And I know if I do. I may be damming these kids to foster care or grandparents rights with my parents and they don’t have the space.
So WIBTA? I think I would be. But at the same time. My subconscious is screaming “finally some consequences of his own actions!”
UPDATE: so I’m getting a lot of messages and comments about why I can’t report him. Statue of limitations in my state ends at 18. So I’m 8 years passed that sadly. My dad didn’t even find out until 2021, my mom didn’t tell him until we got in a fight in the living room about her always defending him.
Also. I’ve called The number you all left me in the comments. Thank you for that! I was worried I’d be an asshole for risking them going to a foster family. I hear a lot of horror stories, but I hope that if they do get removed. They’re placed with some of you in the comments who are foster parents. Because you’re right.
Some have said there’s a chance the SIL will step up with him out of the picture, but I don’t think that would happen seeing as she won’t get a job. And she spends the 500$ allowance on herself.
Another question I’m seeing is why didn’t I step in sooner. I didn’t know he had any kids until May 2022, and even then I wasn’t hearing much of anything until recently about them being divorced. I haven’t gone to therapy for what happened when I was younger and I’m very good at disconnecting my emotions. And that’s what I did. Until a week ago when I overheard a phone call between my mom and my brother about his situation.
Additionally I’ll be going no contact woth my mom and moving hopefully out of state now that I’ve healed from surgery.

2023.06.06 17:21 MjolnirPants Jerry and the Adoring Fans: Part 1
"This was supposed to be our time," I groused as the concierge coordinator left our cabin. Inanna shook her head slowly and patted her lap. I sat on the bed next to her and leaned over, resting my head on her thighs. I always loved this, especially because she would inevitably- Oh god.... Oh yeah, that's it...
The fingers running through my hair, gently rubbing my scalp were hypnotic. The tension immediately drained out of me and my whole body went limp. It sounds kind of weird, doesn't it? I mean, I'm married to the former goddess of sex, a woman whose sexual appetite could not be described without the use of the words 'insatiable' and 'bizarre'. I mean, it would be a struggle to not use the term 'sexual body horror-esque' as well. When I say she's imaginative, I mean imaginative. And yet for all the times she's turned off gravity, induced orgasms in organs that have no business having orgasms (liver orgasms are a trip, but heart orgasms are mind-blowing), growing new organs in random places on her body or doing any or all of those things to me, this was the thing she did that melted me.
Every time. Man, I could fall asleep right now, regardless of the stress the coordinator had re-introduced to my life. I've fallen asleep like this many times before, in fact.
"It's not so bad," she purred. "All you have to do is give a talk. You've done that many times before."
I sighed. I wasn't able to work up any indignation like this, but as long as she kept her fingers from the spots behind my ears, I could still think.
"And sign a bunch of autographs and pose for pictures," I said. "And the talk will be to a bunch of fans, not academics and students. It's a totally different crowd."
"It's really not that different," she said as she found the spots behind my ears and melted my brain.
"The whole thing will take two hours," she said while I was completely helpless. It was totally unfair. I couldn't even protest that it would raise my profile and result in the whole cruise being peppered with people asking for more autographs and wanting to take pictures and buy us drinks.
I sighed again. God, this felt so good...
At some point, one hand wandered off my head and dug into my pants. The hand that continued to rub my head and the sheer familiarity of her fondling me kept me locked in my fugue state as she got me unbuttoned. By the time her scalp-massaging hand slipped away, I was ready to do anything she wanted.
So that's what we did.
----
I'd already agreed to do it, mind. I had just been griping about it when Inanna suckered me with her wily hands, and then her wily hoohah. Yes, I said 'wily hoohah', and if you knew Inanna as well as I did, you'd know that not only does it have a mind of its own, it's a devious and cunning creature that we should all pray remains on the side of good.
I can't really blame the coordinator, either. The cruise Inanna and I had booked just so happened to have a Legend of Jimmy fan convention of sorts happening, which we had somehow overlooked. Actually, I wouldn't be surprised if her hoohah was aware, and simply kept quiet about it, knowing that I'd require a lot of 'comforting' after exposing myself to that much attention.
When the coordinator discovered that the couple on whose lives the show was based was on the cruise, we'd had our middle-grade accommodations bumped up to the top tier, and been given the gold-star concierge service, as well as a free pass to eat at any of the restaurants aboard ship and free admission to countless activities taking place. And then, once that was done, the coordinator oh-so-politely asked if I'd be willing to give a little talk, do a little autograph signing and otherwise schmooze the crowd.
Much to my chagrin, I agreed.
So here I was, sweating under a bunch of stage lights, behind a podium, having recited my hastily-prepared speech about the importance of understanding cultural context when dealing with supernatural entities and specific magics, answering questions that mostly pertained to the show, and often got incredibly personal.
"Is anal your wife's favorite?" a young man asked. I rolled my eyes. "Next question."
A respectable looking young lady in a sweater raised her hand and the usher with the mic held it up to her.
"If she's not into anal... I am," she said with a sly smile. I sighed deeply and prayed for the strength to continue.
"I have plenty of anal sex," I said. "Thank you for the offer, but my sex life is really something I'd rather keep a personal matter." I glanced over at Inanna, occupying one of the chairs on the stage. She was whispering to the host and pointing at the young lady. A naive person might assume she was asking to have her expelled after disrupting the Q&A by making what was obviously a joking offer.
But I knew she was making sure she got the young lady's number. Because Inanna.
The usher found a muscular young man with a serious burn scar on his neck. Probably a veteran, I thought, noting the way he moved as he stood.
"Did the CIA teach you how to fight, or are you a vet, or did you learn it elsewhere?"
I pointed at him. This was a much better question.
"Umm, the Agency doesn't really expect its field agents to do a lot of fighting. I did have a week-long training course on pistol shooting and light tactical stuff, but the biggest takeaway from that was that I should save any gun I was carrying for emergencies and always do what my protection agents' tell me to.
"One of my protective agents was, at the time, Inspector Johnson, currently one of our investigators at the DCM Group. That was how we met. He taught me a lot, actually.
"Most of what I know was acquired through magical means. My wife constructed a type of avatar known as a homoculus. It's an avatar that is a sort of messenger being. In this case, the message was all of the magically-collected knowledge in the world about combat. Martial arts, strategy, tactics, etc. Not a whole lot of specific military knowledge, mind, just the direct fighting stuff.
"Now, with all that being said, the single most important thing I know about combat, I learned from Inspector Johnson. And that was two things. The first is specific to combat, and that is that you can't win a fight if you're not an... An asshole."
The crowd laughed. I waited for it to die down.
"That sounds pretty wrong, I know, but it's true. Aggression is the single most important factor in a fight. All things being equal, the more aggressive fighter will always win. And aggression can make up for a lot of other failings, in a pinch. Size, strength, training... Aggression is the real key. And as we all know, the most aggressive people are inevitably assholes. So if you want to be able to defeat a dangerous enemy, you've got to be a bit of an asshole yourself.
"The second thing was probably the single most valuable lesson I ever learned in my entire life. And that is that courage is not the absence of fear, but the ability to act in the face of fear. In fact, if you're not afraid, you can't be brave. Every act of bravery, throughout history, was performed by someone who was scared to death.
"I'm not going to lie to you; the first time I found myself in a fight, I peed my pants." The crowd tittered. "No joke, I literally peed my pants. More than once. I cried, too. I panicked. Inspector Johnson was there with me, and I was sooo jealous of how cool he was at the time. It was his actions that got us free of our bonds, and gave us the ability to summon help. After, I remember asking him how he kept from being scared, and I remember his exact words. 'I didn't,' he said.
"He told me that he was scared out of his mind, the same as me. The only difference was that he's been scared like that before. He got used to it. He knew that there were things he could do to mitigate the threat, so he did those things, even though he was still terrified. And as I found myself in more and more dangerous situations, I quickly realized what that meant. It's okay to be afraid. You just gotta be afraid and working."
The crowd erupted into applause as I finished. I blushed, because I hadn't planned on that becoming a rousing anecdote, but I'd take it. The host rose and walked to the podium, waiting for the cheering to stop before speaking.
"That's all the time we have for the Q&A, but Mister and Missus Williams will be available to sign autographs and take photos in the lounge in five minutes. Thank you all for coming out, and let's have a big round of applause for our guests!"
The crowd erupted again, this time even louder. Inanna and I waved to them as we walked off the stage, heading for the crew passageway between the backstage and the lounge. We were about halfway there when the ship lurched suddenly to one side and the sounds of screaming and crashing filled the air.
"What the hell was that?" I gasped as I bounced off the wall -excuse me, bulkhead- and grabbed Inanna's arm to held steady her.
She squeezed her eyes shut. Ever since she'd been murdered literally hundreds of times by Sarisa in order to produce the energies she needed for her plan to save the Sixteenth World, Inanna had been having a lot of difficulty pulling magical energy. She had been steadily training herself ever since, slowly increasing the amount of power she had access to. But the process was a long one.
During that long process, she'd been forced to work with tiny amounts of magic to get stuff done, much like a human wizard would. The end result was that her sensitivity to magic had grown by leaps and bounds. She might not be able to hurl around earth-shattering energies willy nilly any more, but there was nobody I knew, human, god or otherwise, who was as magically perceptive as she was.
"Something big and ancient is here," she said. "A creature."
"Great, another monster crossed over," I grumbled.
"This one didn't cross over, Jerry," she said. "This one is native to this world," she was staring off into space, feeling the creature rather than seeing it.
"It's definitely a fully material being. I feel like it's been to the spirit world, but it's from the material world. I don't think it's from this specific material world, though."
"Crap," I muttered. This was arguably worse than a spirit creature. Those, at least, generally had some kind of weakness. Be it a certain emotion, some variety of magic or some substance or material, spirit creatures almost inevitably had some kind of kryptonite. And I only say 'almost' because I can't be a hundred percent sure. Every single variety that I knew about had such a weakness. But a material being from another of the material worlds would be a flesh and blood creature that had evolved to fill its niche. And evolution is a heartless trainer, accepting no weakness.
The ship jolted again and a fresh round of screaming ensued. There was a definite direction to the screaming, coming from the direction we were heading in, so we began to run.
We came out into the lounge to find people packing themselves in. I grabbed a random person by the shoulder. "What did you see?" I demanded.
"I don't know, man! The ship started jerking, and I saw this shadow and I just grabbed my wife and we ran inside!"
"Stay here," I told him. I moved on, pushing through the crowds to the door. It was hard going, with everyone trying to get inside. Eventually, I got completely stopped by the press of bodies, and I looked up, to see if I could fly above them. The ceiling was too low, of course. If I did that, I'd be flinging people around with the force of my magic, which would get someone hurt. Crap.
"MAKE A FUCKING HOLE!!" Inanna roared.
People jerked in surprise at the volume of the shout, carrying even above the crying and screaming all around us. They quickly moved further into the room, clearing a path for us to the doors.
"Thank you," I said as she took advantage of the extra room to walk beside me instead of behind me. She smiled sweetly and goosed my butt as we moved through the doors, out onto the deck.
Tentacles rose into the air around the ship. People were still about, mostly running for the doors to get inside. I realized, looking at the grandiose size of those tentacles, that it wouldn't do any good. This ship was huge, one of the largest cruise ships on the ocean. It was over a thousand feet long and a quarter of a million tons in volume. There were over four thousand guests on board, and until now, I'd never seen a dense crowd. Wait times for everything were reasonable.
Yet, judging by the size of those tentacles, I worried about the ship sinking.
Inanna pulled up short as she saw it.
"Motherfucker...." she said, then turned to me.
"Jerry, I hope your magical muscles are nice and swole, because we need to start teleporting people to safety right fucking now."
"What is it?" I asked.
"It's a kraken," she said.
"I figured as much, but there's no way we can evacuate this ship in time. I could maybe teleport them a hundred at a time, but even assuming it only takes three minutes to get a hundred people to link hands, that's two hours to get just the passengers. It'll be another forty five minutes for the crew. Whatever this thing is gonna do to the ship, it'll be over by then."
She shook her head. "You don't understand, Jerry. Krakens are mostly legendary in this world. They're not native here, and have only come over through the occasional rift that pops up way down at pressure depth. Most of what you know is complete BS. This is how they hunt. Wales and dolphins are their primary food, but they evolved on a world where humans had large ships full of people sailing the seas twenty thousand years ago, and they've adapted."
The ship jerked again as I watched a massive tentacle wrap completely around it and began to tighten down.
"It's going to break the ship, and then its going to come after the lifeboats. That's its strategy here."
"Crap," I muttered. "You have any ideas?"
"I've never even heard of a ship that survived a kraken attack, Jerry. Ninety percent of the people on board won't, either, and that's the best case. Worst case, everybody dies."
My mind raced. The first thing that occurred to me was the trick I'd used to kill the primordials. But honestly, the primordials were probably smaller than the kraken, and its body was underwater. If I hit the surface of the ocean at those speeds, it would be like a bomb going off. I'd likely just break the ship even quicker.
"I think it's too dangerous for you to do the human bullet thing," she said, her thoughts echoing mine.
"Right," I said. "So, we've got to figure out a way to drive it off. Make it think that it's not worth going after this ship, right?"
"I mean, if you can think of something that might do that, and not destroy the ship, yeah."
I wracked my brain for ideas. Fire was an obvious choice, but the beast's size ruled that out. If I made enough fire to hurt it, I'd damage the ship and probably kill a bunch of people. I watched another tentacle curl around and tighten onto the ship. With the two that had been in place when we got out, that made four. We were running out of time.
"Shit," I swore, using up one of my limited supply for the month. "Baby, I don't know what to do."
"Start teleporting," she said. "We'll save as many as we can."
I winced. Leaving people to die was something I wasn't willing to accept until the last second. Of course, the longer I waited to take that route, the more people I'd have to leave to die. This was the worst sort of calculus I'd ever done, and I always hated math.
I immediately pictured the panic that would happen when I started teleporting people and the rest realized I wouldn't be able to get everyone. It would be chaos.
A younger couple made their way from one of the edges of the ship, heading for the lounge. As they passed us, they stopped.
"You're Jerry and Ishtar Williams, right?" the woman asked.
"Inanna," I said. "Ishtar is the character," I said.
"Right, sorry. Do you know what this thing is?"
Inanna answered for me. "It's a kraken. A real one."
"Why is it attacking the ship?" the man asked.
"It's hunting," I said. Inanna nodded. "It's going to break the ship, then go after the people in the lifeboats," she added.
"Holy shit," the woman gasped. "Can you stop it?"
"Trying to figure out how, right now."
"Can we help?" the man asked. I turned to them. "I don't think so, no."
I kept trying to think as Inanna approached them, realizing I wouldn't get any planning done while answering their questions.
I needed something that would drive the best off, or kill it quickly. Honestly, even if I could blink my eyes and stop its heart, which I didn't think I could, but would try as a backup plan, I think the bulk of the creature might drag the ship under. We needed to get it to let go of the ship. Which went back to what I'd just been thinking, about driving it off.
We needed to hurt it. But I didn't know how to do that without killing people on the ship.
"Shit," I said again. "I don't know how to drive it off without killing people on the ship."
"What do you mean?" the woman asked.
"Everything I can do that would cause it significant enough pain to rethink attacking us would also damage the ship. And I don't dare kill it with its tentacles wrapped around the ship like this, it'll pull us under."
Inanna rounded on me, and I could see she'd had an idea. "What?!" I asked.
"Oh Jerry," she said with a malicious gleam in her eyes. "You're gonna hate this."

2023.06.06 15:52 Dramatic-Surprise251 10+ years of chronic health issues solved but still struggling with moving on
I’m 27. When I was 13/14, I started having weird throat issues all the time. It felt like my throat had a lot of pressure in it, like a weird tension feeling, and the only thing that helped was when I ate/drank something or swallowed. This would help then it would come back a few minutes or so later. I had weird issues swallowing saliva too. I saw an ear nose & throat doctor about this and was told my issue was acid reflux. Doctor prescribed reflux medication and told me to sleep on an incline. I did those things for a while, but it didn’t help. Supposedly I was treating the issue and the doctor didn’t know why I wasn’t improving but told me to continue doing what I was doing to supposedly treat it. I saw some other doctors that weren’t sure either. I pretty much learned to just live like that but it was annoying and started to take over my life to the point that every day revolved around coping with my throat and dealing with the bad anxiety it was causing. I used to avoid things, had no life, had to make sure I always had something to drink to help my throat, and felt really stressed about the whole thing and how it was affecting me. On a side note, I also used to breathe mostly through my mouth as well. No one really knew, but I was really miserable all the time because of this stuff.
At 15, I started to feel like a brain fog on top of the throat issues. Something I’d never felt before. It was like my brain felt like mush all the time, no matter how much sleep I got. Like that feeling when you sleep really bad for a couple nights and feel like crap, except I was sleeping enough. Felt kind of spaced out constantly, couldn’t concentrate as well, I never wanted to do anything, felt apathetic, and just kind of crappy all the time. Wasn’t severe but was definitely impacting my day to day life. I went back to seeing doctors. Lots of doctors said there was nothing medically wrong with me and some even said that the brain fog (and maybe even the throat issues) were all psychological. I didn’t feel like that was it because my symptoms felt so real and physical but what did I know. I was prescribed antidepressants and doctors recommended I see a therapist for bad anxiety issues. I spent the next couple of years trying multiple medications, seeing therapists, and making other changes but nothing helped. I thought I was going crazy. In those few years that passed, I had slowly started to feel worse. By the time I graduated high school, the constant mental fog and tiredness were affecting me pretty bad. I felt stressed and anxious nonstop. I had almost no life during high school because of it and did just the bare minimum to get by. With lots of doctors telling me there was nothing physically wrong with me, I started to believe them about it being all mental. I thought it was something I was doing wrong personally. At this point I wasn’t even talking to my family about it as much since supposedly there was nothing wrong and it was all in my head. Especially when doctor after doctor were saying nothing was wrong and because my symptoms were mostly feeling tired all the time, what was I supposed to say? It felt like it was my personal fault for feeling the way I did. Everyone gave me the impression that my issues were because of me and I just needed to change my mindset and lifestyle and I’d feel better. Positive thinking, anxiety workbooks, deep breathing, more sleep, take antidepressants, therapy. I did every single thing doctors and therapists told me to do, but nothing helped. Doctors and therapists made me question my sanity every day. It was hell.
I was in no shape to go to college out of state, but I did. I ended up going because supposedly there was nothing wrong with me and I was trying desperately to believe it was all in my head like doctors and therapists and my family were saying. I just needed to change my way of thinking and lifestyle and that would cure the constant brain fog and tiredness and throat issues. So I pushed myself to go, hoping I’d sort it out. I spent the next 4 years slowly feeling worse, still seeing doctors but getting no legit answers. I'd go months and months at a time without seeing a doctor as I didn't know where to turn and had given up at times. I saw a doctor about sleep apnea but didn't seem to fit almost any of the symptoms. Stuff like waking up trying to get air, choking, stopping breathing, snoring, wasn't overweight, wasn't unhealthy, didn’t have a family history of it or other health issues. Still, I tried one of those moldable mouthpieces that’s supposed to help with sleep apnea but didn't see any benefit from it. So with all of this, I figured it’s probably not sleep apnea. I was so desperate, I was constantly trying all sorts of medications, supplements, and other weird things to try and help myself. I felt like I was losing my damn mind. My mental health was horrendous. Felt like crap 24/7. I literally felt stupid because my brain wasn’t working. Dealing with symptoms and figuring out what was wrong with me consumed my entire life. I would occasionally go to class after taking a big dose of stimulant drugs, but even those only did so much. No amount of caffeine pills, energy drinks did anything either. I was beyond that stuff helping. I experienced almost nothing enjoyable in those 4 years of college and had basically no life, really no friends, hobbies, nothing. Really the only experience I had during college was when I went on a study abroad trip but it was hell because I felt so awful the whole time. I had also joined a fraternity in the beginning of college but did almost nothing with them for the same reason. The mental tiredness had gotten so bad it felt like I was disconnected and living in a dream. Like I felt kind of drunk. I was so mentally and emotionally numb and exhausted I didn’t even feel human. Like I physically could not feel emotions and felt super spaced out. I was also still dealing with the throat issues. I’d get random dizziness, my vision got worse like being more sensitive to bright light and bad floaters in my eyes, almost no libido. I somehow managed to graduate college and finished feeling significantly worse than when I began. I was so miserable and had no one to talk to about what was going on. But I was at least glad that college was over, because it sucked horribly.
I spent the next year doing just the bare minimum to get by. About a year after college (2019), I had a sleep study done and results came back with moderate sleep apnea. For the first time I actually had an answer. Sleep doctor immediately prescribed a CPAP machine. Didn’t even bother to wonder why a young healthy person has sleep apnea to begin with, because it’s not normal. I spent the next 2ish years trying multiple machines, masks, changing all the settings, but only saw some improvement. Keeping the CPAP consistently on throughout the night was also a struggle in itself as it was super awkward and uncomfortable, even though I was desperately trying to make it work. When I was able to keep it on for 5+ hours a night I felt a bit better but it was really difficult to do so consistently. During this time I couldn’t really hold down a job, other than some really basic, short term jobs. And even those felt brutal. My relationships with everyone were affected pretty bad. I was a complete zombie because the tiredness was so overwhelming. It was as an amount of brain fog and exhaustion I didn’t know was humanly possible. I was making myself basically sick with stimulants that really weren't helping and even had a doctor at one point tell me that I should get genetic testing for depression or have my brain zapped with electric shocks. I luckily didn't go that route.
After two years of messing with machines, my sleep doctor then recommended I see a maxillofacial doctor to see what the underlying breathing issue was being caused by. The doctor recommended I get a custom mouthpiece made that shifts the lower jaw forward to help open the airway to prevent breathing issues while sleeping. The process of having it fitted and made took a couple months. I even took a “real” job during this same time because I had two different doctors telling me that this mouthpiece was likely to help me a lot. I felt like I couldn’t have gotten the mouthpiece fast enough. I ended up messing with the mouthpiece for months and had no benefit at all. Literally zero. The dentist who made the mouthpiece said that the mouthpiece wasn’t helping because I might just have “weak muscle tone” in my throat and that I should see someone called a myofunctional doctor to supposedly improve muscle tone in the throat and tongue. I looked into that and it seemed like total quack stuff so I didn’t do it and completely dropped that dentist that made my mouthpiece and suggested this. I then saw an ear nose and throat doctor and later did a sleep endoscopy with him where I was put to sleep and had my breathing monitored with a camera down my throat. The doctor said that my breathing issues were being caused by my throat and jaw and suggested that since the mouthpiece wasn’t helping, I could get surgery or have a device called Inspire surgically inserted into my chest and neck to artificially help breathing. I held off on that cause it sounded pretty extreme and thought there had to be something else. During this time I had to leave the job I should’ve never taken in the first place because I was so non-functional.
I pretty much gave up for months. I eventually scheduled an appointment with another ear nose & throat doctor (the same kind of doctor I saw when I was 13). I'd already seen many ear nose & throat doctors by this point but didn't know what else to do. Don’t remember how exactly it happened, but the connection was made that my issues were due to really abnormal nasal breathing. Something called nasal valve stenosis, where both sides of my nose were completely caving in and blocking most air, leading to crappy breathing, even when just breathing in lightly. This issue is worse during sleep and was causing my brain to “wake up” every time my nose had the obstruction. So I was struggling to breathe all night and I was slowly feeling worse as I was never getting good deep sleep. So the bad sleep every night just kept accumulating over the course of 10+ years. He also explained that my throat issues were a sign that my nose wasn’t functioning normally, which was causing airflow issues and a throat pressure feeling as a result. But weirdly the nasal issues weren’t being caused by my nose itself. There’s nothing actually wrong with my nose. It’s the middle part of the face that provides the base and support for the nose that is lacking the support needed to keep the nose open for normal breathing. Doctor said it’s really abnormal for nasal collapse to happen like this as a result of the face just not developing properly. It was just the way the middle of my face grew and changed over time, especially during puberty, that led to this. Doctor said it is called midface deficiency. It’s the area of the face just to the sides of the nose, below the eyes. Doctor said facial surgery is really what I needed but said nasal surgery could potentially help a bit and is less intense of a surgery, so I decided to go with that. Prior to the surgery the doctor had me wear a dilator in my nose at night to keep it open which helped immensely. Everything finally made sense for the first time ever. I even recorded my sleep and sure enough I could hear myself struggling to breathe all night.
Last year (2022), I had nasal valve surgery. It took a long time to recover from surgery and I still have to wear something in my nose when I sleep to prevent it from pinching shut as the surgery only helped a bit. I will still have to look into facial surgery to address the underlying issue as my breathing is still not great during the day when I’m not wearing a dilator in my nose but at night I wear it and am good. Over time most of my issues have gone away. The slowly worsening constant exhaustion and brain fog and cognitive issues that started when I was a teenager. The severe anxiety and stress feelings I had since I was a kid. Throat issues gone. It was that obvious all along but untreated made my life constant torture to no end. Feeling horrible nonstop, slowly getting worse, not knowing why, being told there was nothing wrong with me and that it was all psychological, trying all sorts of things with no benefit, and having my entire life be ruined was a mental hell I wouldn’t wish on anyone. I don’t feel like my teens and most my 20s actually happened because I was in such poor health physically and mentally 24/7. I wish I had been able to see decent doctors earlier, but obviously that didn’t happen. I’m not even sure how I wasn’t able to make the connection myself. I think I was just so used to really bad breathing since I was young I didn’t know it was abnormal and had no reason to think I had some weird issue. I still struggle with the mental effects of I think living like this for so long. The depression and anger about it all. The why did I have to have this weird specific issue that destroyed and stole my life, why couldn't doctors have helped me sooner like that very first ENT doctor I saw at 13, why couldn't it have been any other identifiable health issue, etc. It's surreal to even think about how my life has been for so long. These issues consumed everything for more than 10 years so I guess it’s not surprising that it still affects me mentally even after the fact. Thanks for reading and hopefully this can help someone out there.
Here's photos of my nose just breathing in slightly deeper than normal. It's only slightly better following surgery:

2023.06.06 15:20 -Athy Advice Needed - Birth Certificate Mismatch
Hello all, looking for some advice, this is an odd-one.
My stepfather (John Smith) as such is due to retire soon however is under a considerable amount of stress about receiving his pension.
The pension provider has requested photo identification to proceed.
John Smith does not have a password or photo driving license. He has an old driving license that did not require a photograph at the time.
Now, here’s where it gets interesting.
John Smith is registered as John Moore on his birth certificate. Mother being unmarried and no father’s name.
The mother, married later on, however John was not adopted by the man bringing him up, however used his surname, thus John Smith.
John went throughout his life using the name John Smith, went to school, got a national insurance card, bank accounts and mortgages, all under the name John Smith.
John, was only informed of this true biological father a year or so ago. Both his biological father and stepfather are now deceased. Mother is alive, but fragile.
John is unable to obtain a passport or photo driving license because the name on the birth certificate is different to that on every other document and account used for decades. Essentially, there are no legal records of John Smith, leading to the issue with receiving his pension.
Asking the community, what to do next? The man is the most kindest person I’ve ever met, it’s awful to see him worried about something he’s worked his entire life for.
Best Regards - Athy

2023.06.06 12:55 beardify Something Is Killing The Patients At Pine Hill Mental Hospital
“He walks these halls with steps like dripping water.
His bloated hands are as purple as rot in dark places.
He passes through the walls with the damp and chilly air.
If I die in here, it wasn't sickness, it wasn't an accident, it wasn't suicide–
It was HIM.”
The note was stuck to the bottom of the bed; I only found it because I was looking for a way to rip a piece off of the frame–to hurt myself with. I was going through a very dark time in my life…and it was about to get darker.
I'd been admitted to the Pine Hill Mental Hospital after my breakdown in mid-January–
But I suspected that it always felt like winter at Pine Hill. The corridors were cold and drafty, and the thick dusty windows made the skies outside seem perpetually gray. With their stressed expressions and exhausted, shambling walk, it was hard to tell the staff apart from the patients.
Pine Hill Mental Hospital was a place where society dumped the people it was ashamed of, then conveniently forgot them.
I couldn't have said why I kept the odd little note. It felt like a good luck charm, or at least a reminder that somebody out there had been crazier than I was.
Until the night I was woken by a strange sound, like dripping water. I sat up in the blue darkness, listening as it passed by my door and entered the room next door. It took my sleep-addled brain a moment to realize what was so wrong about that fact: the door had never opened.
Whatever it was, it was just suddenly inside the room next door.
The walls in Pine Hill were thick stone, but noise traveled in the place. Like the man across the hall who'd laughed for days straight until his throat was so raw that he fell silent, or the old woman to my left who moaned in her sleep. But from the room to my right, I'd barely heard a sound.
Until now.
"H-hello?" A husky voice asked "...who are you?"
Drip. Drip. Silence.
"What're you doin' in my room?!" Tiredness had been replaced by fear. "Hey! Say somethin'!"
There was no reply but the echo of droplets hitting the floor.
Then the strangling sounds began.
It was like the person in the room beside me was choking on their own tongue. I frantically pressed the panic button, with no result but the desperate clicking of plastic.
Drip. Drip.
No more noise came from the adjacent room…but I had an awful feeling something was listening. I let go of the panic button and shut my eyes tight.
I woke to the squeaky wheels of a guernsey.
A body was being removed from the room beside me.
If I die in here, it wasn't sickness, it wasn't an accident, it wasn't suicide.
He passes through the walls with the damp and chilly air.
His bloated hands are as purple as rot in dark places.
He walks these halls–
With steps like dripping water.
"God, I hate this month," an orderly grumbled from the hallway. "Why'dya think they always punch their ticket in February, huh?"
"Fuck if I know," his partner snorted. "Nasty, dreary weather. No holidays. Start of another miserable goddamn year. Take your pick."
My heart was racing. Had I just hallucinated the awful events of the night? Or was there something more to the note I'd found beneath my bed. As I waited for my session with the chief psychiatrist, Dr. Harlow, I wondered which was more terrifying: not being able to trust my own mind, or whatever haunted the halls of Pine Hill Mental Hospital.
Dr. Harlow was a white-haired, muscular man who reeked of optimism and clean living. Up close, I would've sworn that he actually smelled like the organic vegetable section of the supermarket. He shook my hand and flashed a bright smile before our session. Considering how gloomy the hospital was, I wondered how he pulled it off. The man's cheerfulness bordered on the delusional, but he didn't miss a trick.
"We've been talking about the events that led to your admission to Pine Hill, but you seem distracted. How are you adjusting to your stay here?"
"It's a big change," I admitted. "I was always the strong one, the one who never complained…and I guess I just never imagined that I could end up here."
"We each have our cross to bear." Dr. Harlow smiled and tapped the rim of his wheelchair. "Often it's not the one we would have expected." He didn't sound like he bought my story; looking at the metal cage around his leg, I wondered what had happened to the guy.
"If anything…bothers you…during your time with us," Dr. Harlow went on, "remember that I'm always listening."
It was only later, back behind the locked door of my room, that the good doctor's final comment might have meant more than it seemed.
Dr. Harlow held the keys to my freedom from Pine Hills, but as long as I was there, I had bigger problems. Like Big Bill.
Big Bill was a huge nurse who seemed to take my mental illness personally. I'd don't know whether I reminded him of someone he hated or if he just didn't like my face, but whatever it was, he seemed to enjoy making me hurt. When he drew blood, I watched him smile evilly as he missed vein after vein on purpose. He'd rough-handle and shoulder-check me every chance he got, and I wasn't the only one: he left a scrawny teenager locked naked in the shower room until his lips turned blue and he was shivering too much to stand. When I complained to Nurse Avery–one of the kindest orderlies–she just sighed:
"Big Bill is the nephew of some board member or other. Even the psychiatrists can't stand the guy, but there's nothing we can do."
The scrawny teenager approached us, shamelessly eavesdropping on our conversation.
"Can I help you, Harrison?" Avery rolled her eyes at him.
"Yeah," the teen sniffled, "actually I think you can. You do the schedules, right?"
"That's very perceptive of you." Avery nodded.
"Could you put Big Bill on the night shift?"
"I guess I could…I'd probably catch hell for it, though. And are you sure you'd wanna risk being alone with that guy at night? I mean, even during the day, the rest of us can barely hold him back…"
"Just a week or two. That's all I ask. By then I'm sure Bill's board-member-uncle will have blown up at you and you'll have to apologize to those scumbags…but it would mean the world to me."
"I don’t wanna make an enemy of Big Bill…" Avery hesitated.
"Come on," Harrison begged. He pulled up his shirt to reveal a series of hideous purple bruises, "please…"
I knew Big Bill had found out about the shift change when I heard him roar and kick the crutches out from under the legs of the nearest patient. Harrison smirked. I didn't know what he was playing at, but as I rubbed the jab-wounds in my arms…I hope it worked.
As cruel as Big Bill could be, I didn’t envy him for his nighttime patrols. Even before I'd discovered the note, Pine Hill had struck me as a uniquely eerie place–especially after dark.
The hundred-year-old building creaked and groaned as it shed its renovations, and when the cold fluorescent lights flickered, it was easy to see things that weren’t there.
Big Bill whistled nervously as he completed his rounds, pausing only to make a single statement:
“When I find out which one of you nutjobs is responsible for this, you’re gonna wish you’d never been born.”
It happened four nights later. A fierce wind had been blowing all day, and the power had already gone out twice. The emergency lighting worked, but it was dim; the wails and gibbering of some of my fellow patients when the lights went out made me think of a Bible verse from my youth: “he will be cast into the Outer Darkness, where there is Weeping and Gnashing of Teeth.”
It was driving Big Bill nuts.
“Shut up! SHUT. UP!” I could hear him beating on someone’s door with his nightstick. Seconds later, his crazed face appeared in the square plexiglass window of my room. His eyes were wild, his face red from all the screaming; I could see clumps of spit and snot in his brown mustache. “What about you, freak? You want some? Or are you gonna off yourself like my little brother? You freaks are all the same–”
Drip. Drip.
It was the same sound as before…and it was coming from right behind Big Bill. Through my small window I watched huge, purplish-blue fingers coil around his neck. His eyes grew wide with surprise–
Then slid out of focus as he collapsed.
The coroner ruled his death a heart attack.
The next day, there was a memorial poster in the cafeteria for ‘William “Big Bill” Coombs: Mentor, Caregiver, and Friend.’ Harrison was caught scratching the faces off of a few of the smiling photos. When the orderlies released him, I took him aside for a hushed conversation:
“How’d you know?” I demanded.
“Know what?” Harrison scratched his neck and looked away.
“Come on. Big Bill. That weird dripping noise. I found a note beneath my bed…about HIM.” Harrison was panicking before I’d even finished speaking. He crouched down, eyes darting all around him as though he expected some awful thing with rotten blue hands to come crawling out of the ceiling tiles.
"Shhhh!" Harrison rasped. "He's always listening!"
The orderlies watched suspiciously; I tried desperately to get Harrison calmed down. I might never have another chance to find out what he knew.
"Look, it's daylight, we're in the cafeteria, lots of people around…he can't hurt you here." I took a deep breath. "Who…or what…is 'he?'"
“I call him the February Man. He always comes around during this month, and when he does…people die.” Harrison scratched his neck again. “Oh, sure, the deaths usually look natural…or at least unexplainable…but they’re not. Not at all.”
“Haven’t you told anyone?”
“I’ve been in here six different times now. Who’s gonna listen to me? Besides…” Harrison lowered his voice “...I’m afraid I’m next. If I don’t get out of here soon…”
During my session with Dr. Harlow that evening, I pleaded Harrison’s case:
“Don’t you think it’s possible…that being in here hurts some people more than it helps them? Like Harrison, for instance…he’s convinced there’s some murderous ghost haunting Pine Hill, and having to deal with THAT, on top of all the other issues he’s facing…” I trailed off.
“We all want Harrison’s suffering to end,” Dr. Harlow rolled over and squeezed my shoulder kindly, “but it isn’t going to happen out there. He needs treatment.” The doctor stroked the metal cage on his leg thoughtfully. “Still, I appreciate you bringing this to my attention. It’s a sign that you’re making progress. I may be able to sign your release papers before long…” My heart leapt in my chest. The prospect of getting out–of going back to pick up the shattered pieces of my life–was thrilling and terrifying at the same time. “Have you heard anything else about this ‘ghost’ of Harrison’s?”
“Harrison, well…he calls it ‘The February Man.’ He says that’s when it kills. He says it has rotten purplish hands and can walk through walls…”
“Fascinating!” Dr. Harlow chuckled. “Well, I suppose I’ll have to bring it up with the other patients. We don’t want a mass hysteria on our hands! Come, we need to get you back to your room. It’s almost time for Lights Out.”
Back in my room, I thought about Harrison:
About how he’d been so sure that he was in danger.
About how he’d stayed close to me ever since our conversation, like he was scared to be alone.
Now he was locked up by himself in a dark room, just like I was…
And it was almost time for The February Man to start making his rounds.
I shivered, rolled over, and fell into a dreamless sleep.
I dreamed of dripping water, and woke to the sound of a squeaky wheel. The Guernsey.
“What happened to this one?” an orderly was asking.
“He got ahold of some sleeping pills somehow. You know that little corner of the rooms, the one where the camera can’t quite see? He went back there and took’em. They’re gonna give us hell for this,” his companion complained.
I sat up in bed. Harrison.
“What about these weird bruises on his neck, though?”
“Let’s just say he wasn’t very popular with some of the staff. Remember Big Bill?” The orderly laughed. My blood ran cold.
Big Bill never hit patients where the bruises could be seen…which meant that Harrison’s bruises were new. Probably from last night. I remembered the final line of the note:
If I die in here, it wasn't sickness, it wasn't an accident, it wasn't suicide–
It was HIM.
The February Man.
“I know how this is going to sound,” I told Dr. Harlow during our session that afternoon, “but I think Harrison was onto something.” The doctor lifted an eyebrow. “I’m not saying its ghosts or a curse or anything like that–but three deaths in one month?!”
“The winter months are always a rough time for us,” Dr. Harlow sighed. “Statistics bear out that these months are when excess deaths occur, and while these accidents are unfortunate–”
“Harrison had bruises on his neck!” I screamed. “And I’ve been hearing things before the deaths! This weird dripping sound!”
Dr. Harrison grabbed his legs until his knuckles turned white, grimacing.
“These delusions and loss of self-control are a most unsettling sign with regards to your progress–”
“I don’t CARE about my ‘PROGRESS!’ People are DYING!” I sprang to my feet in a rage; two orderlies burst in and dragged me, raving, back to my room. They weren’t gentle, but then again, neither was I. The worst part was, Dr. Harlow was right: I had lost control.
If I couldn't trust myself to express my emotions without getting violent, how could I trust my memories of what I thought I’d heard stalking the nighttime hallways at Pine Hill? I’d just blown my best shot at freedom, and if these were delusions, they’d probably only get worse the longer I stayed here…
“They really worked you over, didn’t they?” Nurse Avery whistled when she peered through my window.
“Harrison didn’t kill himself! You’ve got to believe me! It was–”
"Shhh. I'm on duty tonight…and I wanted to give you this." Glancing over her shoulders, she passed a square plastic remote through the door. "This is one of the panic buttons we used back in the day. You're not supposed to have it, so keep it hidden. If anything…weird…happens tonight, you call me, okay?"
I slipped the plastic remote beneath my hospital-issued shirt, too grateful to say thanks.
It felt a lot less comforting after lights out. The drafty air blew over me like monster's breath; shadows seemed to move in the corners of my room. Then I heard it.
Drip. Drip.
My breath caught in my throat. It was coming from inside the wall! The emergency light and camera on my wall suddenly went dead…and the wall behind me opened like a hungry mouth.
Drip. Drip.
In what little light reached in from the hall, I saw a pair of large, bluish-purple hands emerge from the blackness.
It wasn't the rot of death I was looking at–it was surgical gloves.
Drip. Creak.
It wasn't dripping I was hearing; it was creaking.
The creak of a metal leg brace.
Dr. Harlow limped through from the passageway behind the wall.
"You ended Harrison's suffering…by killing him." I gasped. "You didn't approve of Big Bill's methods…so you got rid of him, too. And the person in the room beside me…"
"Another lost cause. Like Harrison. Like you. If you can't be cured, you don't deserve to spend your life trapped in your own mind. You deserve…mercy." The needle glinted in his blue-gloved hand.
I mashed the button Nurse Avery had given me.
The plastic clicked, but no sound came.
The panic button was old–when was the last time anyone had checked the batteries?
Dr. Harlow's leg brace slowed him down, but I knew that if his huge muscular hands got ahold of me, it was over. There was nowhere to run in the tiny room…
Footsteps hurried to my door. Surprise replaced ruthlessness on Dr. Harlow's face; he backed away toward the hidden door in the wall–
Too slow. Nurse Avery burst through the door with two orderlies, who stared at Dr. Harlow with disbelieving eyes.
The good doctor had been caught in the act.
Between the coverup, the chaos, and the whirling rumors, Harlow's replacement had a lot on her plate. She spoke to me only twice before signing my release order.
I would be leaving Pine Hill Mental Hospital a changed man–although not in the way that 'The February Man' had intended.

2023.06.06 12:00 AutoModerator Daily r/LawnCare No Stupid Questions Thread
Please use this thread to ask any lawn care questions that you may have. There are no stupid questions. This includes weed, fungus, insect, and grass identification. For help on asking a question, please refer to the "How to Get the Most out of Your Post" section at the top of the sidebar.
Check out the sidebar if you're interested in more information on plant hardiness zones, identifying problems, weed control, fertilizer, establishing grass, and organic methods. Also, you may contact your local Cooperative Extension Service for local info.
How to Get the Most out of Your Post: Include a photo of the problem. You can upload to imgur.com for free and it's easy to do. One photo should contain enough information for people to understand the immediate area around the problem (dense shade, extremely sloped, etc.). Other photos should include close-ups of the grass or weed in question: such as this, this, or this. The more photos or context to the situation will help us identify the problem and propose some solutions.
