So quite a few people has asked for an update on this situation, sorry it’s taken so long but it’s been a hectic few weeks.
As for the updates the Amber and I are fine. Her reaction was based on poor word choices by me, poor communication by both of us, and some things I was unaware of at the time.
The short version is:
Things at home were much worse than I was aware of for Jennifer, and my wife had only recently found out how bad things were.
Mother’s Day was the straw that broke the camel’s back for Jennifer as well, she was raised in a you must stay together for the kids family, when Harper came to me for a gift she realized that her daughter did not see her sperm donor as a father so it was time to get out.
Jennifer came to my wife to ask for help leaving because she had no family in the area and Jennifer does not have the financial resources to leave on her own.
So the night my wife was going to ask me if we could help her is when I told her I was tired of raising someone else’s kid. That’s what caused her reaction.
The Saturday after out initial argument Jennifer did not come over and Emma went to her grandparents, so the wife and I had a long discussion about what was going on, that’s when I found out all the stuff going on with Jennifer.
The wife and I decided the Jennifer and Harper can stay with us for the time being. My problem was never with those 2 it was that I had to take over for the deadbeat ( or dead beet if you prefer).
When we told Emma about this she was super happy her friend was staying with her. We had a conversation with her that if she wants to have time with either parent with out Harper just let us know, and we do not want her to feel left out of anything.
Last weekend with the help of a Uhaul and some friends of mine we got all of Jennifer’s and Harper’s stuff and moved it into our house. The good thing is we have a 4 bedroom house so everyone gets a bedroom, the bad news is my wife’s office got moved to the basement.
Wish me luck we shall see how this goes.

1. 25 years after ROTJ, Grand Admiral Thrawn unites the scattered remnants of the Galactic Empire into the First Order, a smaller military junta interested in galactic domination. His backstory would be covered in several Disney Plus shows prior to the saga. Several other tidbits would be covered like the formation of Jedi Praxeum, the New Republic, and the fate of the Mandalorians.
   
2. Thrawn’s goal is to take over the galaxy and prepare it for war with Abeloth, but would not anticipate her arriving sooner than he anticipated. He would be trying to build a fleet using the Star Forge, an ancient, automated shipyard in the Unknown Regions. It draws energy and matter from a nearby star and uses dark side power from Exegol to create ships. The Star Forge would be the First Order’s main base of operations instead of Starkiller Base or the Supremacy.
   
3. The First Order fills a role similar to that of the Separatists from the PT: a villain faction that becomes irrelevant once a deadlier faction appears.
   
4. The third film in the first trilogy ends with the Eldritch Empire showing up from the Unknown Regions and laying waste to the defeated First Order and wage war with the New Republic. The second trilogy centers around the heroes battling Abeloth and her undead army.
   
5. Abeloth is very different than how she was in the old EU. Instead, she is an 8,000 year old alien who lived during the Old Republic Era. At one point during her youth, she got corrupted by the dark side, and attempted to harness the power of the Sith Shrine on Coruscant or Mortis. She formed an army of followers and traversed the galaxy murdering anyone who stood in her path. But she was stopped and banished from the galaxy by the Jedi Order. Out in the Unknown Regions, Abeloth continued to grow in the dark side, becoming a dark side necromancer and creating an army of undead foot soldiers using Dark Side Alchemy. She also attacked various nations living out in the Unknown Regions, including the Chiss Ascendancy. Her powers include durability, telepathy, and resurrecting the dead. Think less of the EU Abeloth and more of Tor Valum from DOTF. She and her undead army are sensed by Palpatine during the Imperial Era, which motivates him to launch an exploration campaign into the Unknown Regions to find the source of the presence. Grand Admiral Thrawn leads this campaign and forms the First Order out of the remnants of the Galactic Empire to bring down the Eldritch Empire.
   
6. Thrawn and the Chiss have a dark history with Abeloth. After Abeloth was exiled to the Unknown Regions by the Jedi Order, she invaded the Chiss homeworld and massacred its inhabitants with the help of her followers. When Palpatine senses them in the Unknown Regions and has Thrawn go out and investigate the presence, Thrawn discovers what it is and forms the First Order. Holding a personal vendetta against Abeloth for murdering his ancestors, the Chiss seeks to dominate the New Republic so that he can prepare the galaxy for war.
   
7. When Abeloth returns to the galaxy, she seeks out the power of Mortis or the Sith Shrine hidden underneath the Jedi Temple on Coruscant.
   
8. Ben Solo’s fall to the dark side would also be covered in a Disney Plus show called Jedi Reborn. In Jedi Reborn, Ben Solo comes to believe that Darth Vader would have made for a better leader than Palpatine. But that he ruined his career by redeeming himself in ROTJ. Ben feels that Vader was weak for allowing love and sentiment to cloud his judgment, and decides that he must carry on his legacy by destroying the Jedi and becoming as powerful as him. While he’s under the tutelage of Luke Skywalker, Ben wishes that the Jedi involved themselves in the affairs of the Republic like the old Jedi Order did. He wants them to be active peacekeepers instead of negotiators (this is before they scatter).
   
9. Luke’s Jedi Academy, Jedi Praxeum, differs from the Jedi Order in the PT. Instead of being a militarized, monastic order, Jedi Praxeum is a smaller, independent institute spread across the galaxy, with its members patrolling galactic frontiers like vigilantes or Texas Rangers. It is also an open-door organization, allowing anyone of any age to become Jedi. Now, Jedi Praxeum wasn’t always this way. It was initially assembled as a unified Jedi Academy like the old Jedi Order. But after Ben Solo, Luke Skywalker’s first pupil, turned to the dark side, destroyed the Temple on Ossus, and killed one-third of the students, Luke realized that his small Jedi Academy was vulnerable. He and the other Jedi decided it was best for them to settle in different star systems across the galaxy to make it harder for future enemies to find and destroy them. They wanted to avoid repeating the mistake of the old Jedi Order. They became so complacent that they couldn’t stop Palpatine from becoming Emperor and wiping them out during Order 66. After Ben turned on the academy, Jedi Praxeum scattered across the galaxy. Instead of directly involving themselves with the New Republic and local planetary forces, the Jedi mostly keep watch of people from a distance, only stepping in to help when necessary. Otherwise, they mostly spend time helping themselves and each other connect with the Force. Because of this, the Jedi are a rarity in the galaxy. Although the Jedi will provide humanitarian aid to the New Republic, they don’t serve them like the Jedi of Old did with the Old Republic. This is to avoid complacency during times of peace. However, when vital matters must be addressed, the Jedi are called to Ahch-To for group meetings with Luke Skywalker. They will only unify when it is absolutely necessary.
   
10. Luke Skywalker gets blinded by Ben Solo during a duel after he turns to the dark side.
    
11. Kylo Ren acts as an opportunist in the second trilogy. After killing Han Solo at the end of the third film, he goes into hiding when the Eldritch Empire invades the galaxy. Kylo would become a fugitive and continue to sink further into the dark side while in exile. He seeks out ancient knowledge in Darth Vader’s castle and on other planets strong in the Force. One of the things he discovers is how to defeat Abeloth.
    
12. Kylo Ren remains a villain throughout the whole saga. The moment he crosses the point of no return is when he kills Abeloth and siphons her powers for himself, much like Doctor Doom stealing the Beyonder’s powers in Marvel’s Secret Wars.
    
13. At one point during the second trilogy, Anakin Skywalker visits Kylo Ren and tries to bring him back to the light.
    
14. Rey trains Finn in the ways of the Force during the second trilogy. The first trilogy is about Finn breaking away from the First Order’s indoctrination, and the second is about him becoming a Jedi.
    
15. Finn leads a Stormtrooper rebellion at the end of the third film, and the defected Stormtroopers side with the New Republic in their battle against the Eldritch Empire during the second trilogy.
    
16. Throughout the second trilogy, the New Republic and the Eldritch Empire control their own domains in the galaxy.
    
17. Thrawn is imprisoned with other remaining First Order officers by the New Republic at the end of the saga.

My girlfriend used to make me jealous all the time , showing me pics of her ex's (just profile pictures ) , talking about her sexual past and just small things like saying after sex "you've got the biggest I've seen ". And then there's the stuff that she did that hurt me .. she replied to a FB message from her ex's brother and I saw the conversation . It was nothing bad , but it's the fact that I found it and she might not have said anything about it . And also a time where she told me someone was harassing her on FB but when I confronted the guy about it , he showed me the conversations and she was going on with it .
I've been happy with her for 8 years now and are married with a kid! But suddenly I feel insecure , deppressed and I feel like I've been dealing with this in the back of my head for a while now . But it's just got bad . All these thoughts are coming back as if it just happend , and I don't know why .

There is a simple reason some documents are required to be marked ‘Top Secret’; the knowledge of what these documents contain could present a lethal danger to our very existence.

The sit and wait, and the very fact their locations are unknown, can rain fire and destruction on any point on the globe, is the primary deterrent to any bad actor.
There are documents that identify the names and locations of our spies overseas. Since the end of World War Two we have been building an intelligence network second to none, but it all could be destroyed in a single day, should these identities be known.
There are documents spelling out our economic strategies regarding China, Russia, North Korea, and all the Middle East nations who are not always so friendly to us.
There are documents containing information about germ warfare, chemical warfare, cyber warfare, and things too insidious to even contemplate.
There are documents identifying every military installation, be it Army, Navy, Air Force, or any subsidiary force, including personnel, equipment, and armament.
These documents exist – these and many more -- detailing who knows what secret weapons, plans, strategies, responses, and nation protecting devices, and like the rest are ‘Top Secret’.
Donald Trump stole top secret documents and stored them in his office and an easily accessible storeroom. They were unguarded, and any maid, waiter, pool boy, maintenance man, chauffer, or gardener could, with very little difficulty, steal or photograph them, and send them off to a foreign embassy.
We don’t know what those documents were, (they are Top Secret) we don’t even know if he has others secreted somewhere in his many other properties. One thing we can be sure of, they were not innocuous. What reason could he have for stealing documents relating to the EPA, Federal Trade Commission, or Federal Pension Board?
The CIA, the FBI, yes; the Commission on Housing and Development? Probably not.
Some say, ‘What’s the big deal if he took home some papers?’
Think about it, in that we don’t know his motivation, it could be a very big deal.
What we do know is that he can be vindictive, petulant, and go to any lengths he deems necessary to get even with an opponent, even if the opponent is the United States Government and its citizens.
Why did he steal those documents?

Last year a friend and I hatched an idea called Humility Month. We came up with the idea as a way for us as Christians to be a light in a world full of darkness. Light does not need to fight darkness, it simply needs to shine.
In this spirit, let's shine the light of humility this month of June.
So why is humility so important? Humility is what God favours:
James 4:6 - But he gives us more grace. That is why Scripture says: “God opposes the proud but shows favour to the humble.”
This is also said in Proverbs 29:23 - A man's pride will bring him low, but a humble spirit will obtain honour.
And Matthew 23:12 - For whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted.
And Proverbs 3:34 - He mocks the mockers, but gives grace to the humble.
One of my favourite scriptures is in 1 Corinthians 1: 26-29
Brothers, consider the time of your calling: Not many of you were wise by human standards; not many were powerful; not many were of noble birth. But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong. He chose the lowly and despised things of the world, and the things that are not, to nullify the things that are, so that no one may boast in His presence.
In everything, God must get the glory. Our salvation is predicated not on anything we can boast about in of ourselves. Contrary to the way the world thinks, this is actually something to take refuge in. We are aware of our own imperfections and shortcomings. The world's answer to this is to basically ignore them and even to celebrate them as good. But rather we are those who will look to Christ and His perfection and glory and elevate and celebrate Him. This is the ultimate result of humility, not merely the making low of oneself but the exaltation of the one to whom all honour and glory and praise belong: Jesus Christ. And we see that He also exemplified this kind of extreme humility as is perfectly summarised in Philippians 2:
Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others. Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
God has chosen to use humility as the vehicle for His blessings and favour to be poured out on all of those who assume this mode of being. The humble recognise that God is God and that they are not.
So let's sing with Stuart Townend the great chorus:

We live in a private subdivision in Cavite. Our house is a 2-story house with a parking slot inside. We have been living there since I was a child, and now that I'm in my mid-20s and living with my partner, I only occasionally visit there. The only people who stay there are my father, older brother, and sister, who rarely come home due to her work.
My father is known in the area for making glass doors aluminum etcs., He is the one who made the windows, doors, and other aluminum screen-related items in our subdivision. Our parking space has become his shop too. His setup is that sometimes he moves the car and opens the gate to park the car in front. By the way, I just want to share too that my father easily gets annoyed as probably him getting older.
Now, let me tell you what happened. One time, we borrowed my father's car which is a 7-seater, so our 5-seater car was left in Cavite. My father parked my partner's car in front of the abandoned house because no one was there. after that, we left. The next few days when we went to retrieve the car, we were shocked to see that it was splattered with what looked like blood, and it had a foul smell on the hood and roof it was sticky and hard to remove. My father said that he had a conflict with one of our neighbors in the area in the afternoon a day after. They asked him to move the car from the abandoned house because they wanted to park there, and they argued. In the end, my father moved the car from the abandoned house and parked it in the neighboring house, which was also abandoned. He forgot to bring it back to the shop because he had other things on his mind and fell asleep. The next day, they saw the car in a mess, but they didn't know who did it, and our CCTV cameras didn't capture that part because its too far. My father didn't want to accuse anyone because it's difficult to make allegations.
My partner and I also let it go and didn't make a big deal out of it. After a few months, we again visited my father's house. This time, my partner brought their family's recently bought 7-seater car to show it to my father. (since they are both car enthusiasts)
Again the setup was the same; my father's shop in the morning is our parking slot space and his car is parked in front. When we arrived I told my partner to park in the abandoned house again., I got out and said, 'Move it a bit.' When I got off to the car, I subtly mentioned, 'You know, there are asshole people here who might splash all sorts of things. soon after he parked We proceed to the house, and I realized I left something in the car, so I went back.., That's when I noticed that the neighbor in the house across from where we parked, an elderly woman around my father's age, was looking at me. I recognized her face but didn't know her name. I used to play with her children back then. She suddenly called me over and said that we should move the car into that house because there was no way to pass through in front of what I thought (an abandoned house). I asked her if it was her property, and she said yes. So, I told my partner and had the car moved to the other abandoned house next to it. I also asked my father if someone was living in the abandoned house, and he said that a neighbor rented it after the argument. So, I thought, 'Okay, that's why I let it go.'
After a few hours of chatting with my father, we said our goodbyes and he dropped us off where our car was parked. On our way home, my partner noticed that the car was splattered again in and a sudden thought came to my mind about who might be doing it. .,
Now, this upcoming Monday, we plan to go back to my father's house, and this time we intend to catch the person who splashed the car. I will update you if we catch them.

Out of curiosity, do all AA gate agents have the ability to print boarding passes for any AA flight out of the current airport or just the flight they are in charge of?
Somewhat recently I was at DCA for an evening departure. The airport was relatively crowded and there was a line for the customer support desk, as well as for the gate agents at my own flight.
I decided to go over to a pair of gate agents that were not preoccupied and asked them to print a boarding pass. I was told that I needed to go to the customer support desk or the gate agents manning my flight. The gate agent did not have an angry/rude demeanor by any means, just indifferent.
I realize that many people use mobile boarding passes now a days but I still like to print mine whenever possible.
Any insight?

I’ve personally never have been a shopper, but I have been a customer…. and I have never tip baited or did $0 tip. But I after discovered this app seeing you shoppers post about your frustrations I re checked my orders and I seen my $250-$350 orders with $12-$15 tips (which in the moment I thought was fair with the million others fines IC charges) But from the bottom of my heart I wanna say I’m sorry and I should of been generous as I see the batch pays you shoppers get and what IC keeps. I don’t know if y’all care but I once got my big order delivered by a male in a newer Range Rover I asked him about his car and etc and he told me (this is how I keep active while getting paid) I thought it was brilliant.

Ang totoo ako yung toxic everytime na may ipapaliwanag sya medyo iba impact sakin kaya medyo galit ako pagngsasalita hindi naman ako dati ganito kasi inuunawa ko yung situation hanggang naging less na yung pag uusap naman then less sex then di na kami independent. I dont want to have a child and married anymore" i thought she was tired from her work because she is social worker in malasakit center encountering community problem like a 12yrs girl has got pregnant by 28yrs that he is not aware of her wifes identity something like that and more. So i argue with her and she said she want to break up with me. Im so fraustrated becoz i also cant help my self how to get back. All of the was my fault i should be strong enough. I become worst since 2022 i felt i could handle all of my pressures my family, my financial , my goals and my relationship. She always there for me to advice but what i have done i cant do what she says myself do know where to start. after i started working on Callcenters i become toxic too. I had enough of this shit ..myself myself myself....i want to changes this traits for my own good...I let her go.. She does not deserve this ..I love her so much ....she said to me "im not sure if we will be together" in the future. I knew that phrase pierced tru my heart painfully learning that the truth she doesnt want me anymore she already knew that if she came back she will experience again what happen to us... I was just wondering how many of you had some special preparations for the new update. Some people started new worlds a few weeks/ months ago and simply did not explore too much. Some peeps started looking for tools to clear chunks. Some people started building crazy bamboo farms months ago, gathering tons of books etc.
Now, with the update rolling in - what were your preparations? Are there things you wish you have thought of sooner?
Personally I am just clearing some chunks and hoping for the best. I also had a bamboo farm long time ago, so this step was not necessary. The rest - I prefer to take it slow ;)

Hi i am 23F and this is my first ever reddit post.
I have so many things to do but I did not do anything. I scrolled through ikea for about 7 hours and obsessed about it. Mind you this is on a working day.
I would be alright doing this if I did not have so many things to do that I am avoiding.
I haven’t gotten back to my text messages. i haven’t worked or studied and now I am extremely anxious. I haven’t eaten.
I feel like a failure. The time blindness is unreal.
My to do list apps are filled with random things in them, they are overflowing because I have to write down every new idea on them. It’s like an archive of things that I would never do, but can’t delete the tasks for some reason. Because I would lose the information.
I just want it to be simple. I do not want this to be how my days go.
Please give me any advice. I am willing to work with anything at this point.

I had never been a fan of the show, but when Scandoval hit my friend kept posting about it and I just had to find out what was going on. I binged all 10 seasons on 1.5 speed in a week 🙃 until I was caught up to what was airing. After I watched the show I spent A LOT of time listening to podcasts that came out during that week in march and just spending way too much time listening to podcasts after each episode of season 10. I feel really well versed in the scandal now.. hyperfixated would be an understatement.
But about a week ago I started noticing the way people talked about Raquel. They would say things like “Tom is an awful person, he is super narcissistic, he is lame and having a midlife crisis” But then their tones would change when they talked about Raquel saying things like “there is something seriously off with that girl” “she is mentally unwell” “she has no emotions or empathy”.
I remember while watching the first few seasons of her in it, I didn’t see much of her but I felt bad for her. The way the others talked to her was at times a bit shocking. It seemed from an outside POV from someone with extreme sensory and processing disorders that Raquel at times was having trouble processing things in the moment. It also seemed at times she did things to keep herself in a calm sensory state. (I am not diagnosing, just saying I relate) even at times when she would comment about how she didn’t feel good enough or how she had mini meltdowns when giving speeches. I just felt i related to things she said. But seeing the reaction to her from the cast, names like “Bambi eyed bitch, slow, nothing going on in the head, robot, etc” Always rubbed me weird.
While saying all of this, nothing I am saying is excusing what she has done. I have a lot of deep negative feelings towards Tom so I won’t even get into it.
But I noticed on the VPR Reddit people would be calling her sociopathic, narcissistic, and all other words under the sun. They would say how freaky and creepy and eery she is for having galaxy lights and no lights on in her home. They would talk about how she has always freaked them out, like she seems like an “off individual”. And so much more.
At one point I asked a girl in the group, “ I am autistic and I am just curious why does it make someone ‘creepy’, ‘eery’, ‘like a weird guy who lives in his parents basement vibes’ and i was met with ‘well i assume she is neurotypical so its weird she acts so childlike and does this blah blah blah’. I also tried making a post at one point saying the narrative around raquel was harmful to neurodivergent people. In the post I explained the hateful ways they are talking about her as a human and how she processes life is harmful for people who are neurodivergent etc. It was a pretty long post, in it on multiple occasions i said “ i am not diagnosing her i just want people writing these things to realize that just you can attack and be angry at her actions but to attack someone for the things you’re attacking her for on a Reddit with so many people is harmful and to be mindful”
It got deleted. I noticed every time i mentioned the word autistic it got auto-deleted. But words like narcissistic, sociopathic, bipolar, BPD did not.
I talked to the mods and it was not a nice conversation.
When i saw posts on twitter saying how she was off in the brain, a lot of comments underneath were diagnosing her with ASD by randoms and making it clear they thought that is why she was “off, not well in the head, gave freaky vibes, gives them chills” The whole point of this long post is to ask, for any VPR fans who may also be hyperfixating on scandoval, how do you feel about the language being used towards Raquel? as a lot of the things they are attacking her for are things I go through daily with processing, socializing, sensory etc.

My ex, and I were together for eight years. I’m 28F and he’s 31M. We got together pretty young in our 20s and basically spent our whole 20s together. So this day I love him very much still even though I am the one who initiated the break up. It got to a point where I knew he loved me, and he knew I loved him, but love wasn’t enough. Our communication was nonexistent as he is very emotionally closed off and has a hard time expressing his emotions, and I am very much and over communicator and grew up in a more argumentative household but I still deal with my problems over the years. I had many complaints as I felt he often treated me just like one of his buddies and put in little effort to do special things for me or special occasions. Yeah, he would always do the things he wanted to do by himself. For example, when it came to wanting to go away on a vacation, he would always make money the excuse, but then turned around and financed a brand new Harley for himself. Which is fine as it’s his money however, he got to a point where his needs and his wands were always before our relationship as a couple. I was his first relationship ever and I don’t like to use that as an excuse because I know, lots of men get it right the first time. Also, he never proposed and it got to a stagnant space where there was really no change. He was the same person. He was eight years ago, the only differences we have shared an apartment together for the past three years. He made me feel so emotionally neglected, and when I would express my emotions, he would just gaslight me and turn it around and never owned his faults. And if he did, he would change them for a week and then go back to his Ways. I ended up breaking up with him, and it was somewhat messy as I kept the apartment and we got into a blowout and he ended up moving out with nowhere to go, but that is his full as he told me he was aware of his move out date. Deep down the whole time I wanted him to say some thing and fight for me as I do still love him even right now. I doubt he thinks so, but he just never understood how emotionally neglectful he was to me and selfish in many ways. It’s been about a month and a half since he moved out and I am in our apartment and have been super lonely but I understand that is part of the process. But I do miss him and wonder if he will ever regret it. He changes his Instagram public to private literally five times a day and I have him blocked. But I can still see that. Just wondering if he’s trying to maybe get my attention. He tried to discuss the relationship about two weeks ago and I shut him down over the text and now I am regretting it because I still have some things I feel I want to get off my chest however, it’s almost pointless because we tried for eight years to speak and it never gets anywhere only ends up in a shouting match. I know it’s fresh and normal, but the thought of him giving another girl and correcting his mistakes really hurt me. I was very devoted and loyal to him even through deaths and his family. I just don’t understand how some men can lose someone so good over their pride he is not even showing any vulnerability. He’s only act it out in anger and he’s acting like a 15 year old spiteful kid. He trashed my name to his whole family and they all blocked me when I’ve literally done nothing wrong to him. I’m just wondering if he will ever come around. We do share a dog and he’s been by twice to see her, but he barely can look at me in the face and ask somewhat like a jerk to me….it’s just been hard as I spent 8 years w him and he also left me sleeping on a floor with nothing.

Short Synopsis
A young boy with an interest in local history and cemeteries learns about life and the value of friendship when he meets a child named Peter in the local cemetery that may not be all that he seems.

When I was a kid I had a fascination with graveyards, burial grounds and old churches. I wouldn’t call this a morbid fascination but more of a learning place for a kid of the age of 5 or 6 to explore death and what it means to be remembered by loved ones and friends. As this fascination grew it lead me to the study of local history which would become a keen interest for the rest of life.
My great uncle Tom, who was a mountain of a man as he had worked all of his life as a miner in the local pits, encouraged this interest I had shown in history and at my behest, after Uncle Tom picked me up from school, we would often take long walks with his mongrel dog Tina around the local cemetery. The cemetery was scattered around the large hillside of the local church on the hill. The church cut quite an imposing presence in the small village I grew up in, as it seemed to loom over the whole place sitting high above the rows of houses, local pub and farms. Everyone in the village attended the church at least a few times a week, but at night it was considered a spooky place to the children in the village and my friends considered me very odd and often ridiculed me for my interest in the place and I gained the affectionate nickname Spooky Steven. This wasn’t a bad thing, it was just kids playing around and now we are all grown, we often all sit together having a pint in the local pub and laugh about it. I had my fair share of pokes of fun at them too when we were kids, there was no Internet or game consoles back in those days, so entertainment was what we would make it.
The church was ancient and had gravestones and markers now crumbling with the decay of age that dated as far back as the Anglo Saxon period of Great Britain. This history always fascinated me and it became a common practice for me to head to the graveyard, most often alone in my youth, and make grave rubbings to find names from the past and look them up in the local archives at the town library. This small library was full of old documents such as land registry papers and birth or death records which dated back for hundreds of years, it was like google before computers. I would spend hours in there till closing time at 6pm, looking through all these ancient records and when names came up again and again in certain papers, you could slowly build up a picture of someone’s life. You could see when they were born, who they worked for, who they married and how their lives progressed, most of the older papers ended up with people inheriting land or buying farms and making their way as countryside workers, it was enthralling to me. I think it made me realise early in my life, that if you say someone’s name aloud or read it, that person’s memory is still alive. Even at a young age I found that rather comforting.
Listening to this I’m sure you can imagine I was a bit of a loner, you don’t get the nickname Spooky Steven for being the captain of the football team. No-one was ever cruel to me or anything, I was bullied a little for being different and that was upsetting at times but I wasn’t bothered and I always just kind of did my own thing, so you can imagine I was happy when at about 12 years of age I found a friend who was interested in the same things as I was.
One beautiful summer afternoon while in the graveyard among some shady ancient oaks swaying in the breeze, I was taking some graphite rubbings in a particularly old part of the cemetery and I meet a boy named Peter. Looking back it’s strange that I didn’t know Peter from school, but you don’t think about these things at a young age. When ever I was in that part of the cemetery Peter would often turn up unexpectedly and talk to me about what I was doing and why I was interested in these old names from the past. He was full of information and seemed old for his 13 years, he talked about a lot of the old names on the gravestones as if they were still living. He would tell me about Mr Jones the welsh baker, who spoke with such a strong accent that he was hard to understand and how John Blakley the blacksmith would often let the local children into his shop and teach them how to use the kilns and pay them a small wage for helping him keep the fires burning good and hot. I checked out all of these people that Peter talked about in the library and they were all legitimate people who had lived in the town often hundreds of years in the past. I didn’t question this as Peter would have access to the same documents from history that I did, but I had never seen Peter in the library and I was there most afternoons.
On another occasion Peter told me that he was made to leave school and work from a young age because his father had died in a farming accident, so he had been put to work to help support his family. These times I met Peter we’re all in the late 1980’s and early 90’s and it was only when I began to get a little older that I started to think Peter was not from around here. There was no way a boy of 13 years old would be allowed to work at the hard labour Jobs that Peter talked about doing. Drystone walling or working in the fields are highly dangerous jobs that deal with heavy equipment and chemicals that a child of that age would never be allowed to use in this day and age. But, still I thought nothing of it at first, my young ego thought that maybe he was trying to impress me so I would be his friend. I started to ask about him at school amongst my friends and then the teachers and no-one knew who this boy was. I was again ridiculed for having an imaginary friend so I took a bunch of school friends to the church yard to meet him, but he would never show when I was there with other people. This became very frustrating, so I stopped talking about him.
After about a year or two of meeting with Peter on a few different occasions in the cemetery, I began to notice things that were odd or different about him. The clothes he wore seemed old fashioned and unlike me he didn’t seem to be getting any older, at that age kids grow at an accelerated rate and I was already almost a whole foot taller, but Peter had remained the same. On the last day I saw Peter in those years I questioned him about his clothes and the way he looked and he took great offence to this, his eyes welled up and tears began to roll down his cheeks. I told him I was sorry and that I wouldn’t mention this again, he then said to me some words that I will never forget “Its ok” he said through his tears “It’s been my absolute pleasure to spend this time with you. Just do me a small solid and say my name every once in a while when you are here, I’d appreciate that” he then smiled at me in a way that breaks my heart when I remember it and walked away into a shady part of the cemetery and that was the last time I would see him as a child.
By the time I was around 16 years of age the local historian knew me by name and we had developed a friendship and she began to tell me stories from the past which were not written in any of the history books. Some of the stories she told me were spooky ones about hauntings and other strange paranormal stories of local legends. Because of this interest she had and the passion with which she told me these tales of local occurrences, I felt comfortable enough with her to mention Peter. Her eyes lit up and she asked me to please tell her more. I told her everything and we stayed together well passed closing time looking up names and histories of local residents but we couldn’t find anything about about a young local worker named Peter, however we did find information in a record about the death of a local farmer in his 40s who was crushed in an accident with his wheat plough in the summer of 1889. The strangest part of the story is still to come.
Later in life when I turned 18 I was a regular in the village pub and became very friendly with the landlord and often did shifts in the bar serving in the evening to help pay my way through college where I took a bachelor’s degree in history. In the summer for extra pay the landlord asked me if I were interested in clearing out some of the old attic spaces to get the place ready for an extension that they were going to build. The extra money was welcome so I agreed and that is where the most amazing thing happened. Amongst all the cobweb ridden stacks of books, papers and a wealth of old furniture I found a framed portrait from a very old 1890’s camera. The picture was of a boy laying dead on a bed of flowers on one of the big old wooden tables in the pub, it was Peter. I rummaged around and to my amazement I found hidden in the back of the frame an old newspaper clipping about the death of a 13 year old chimney sweep named Peter Robinson. I was not afraid, but the revelation came as more a relief to know that perhaps I wasn’t crazy and that Peter had reached out to me from somewhere beyond our own understanding of this world. I chose not to mention this to anyone as Peter had never shown himself to anyone else and it felt it would have betrayed our friendship that had occurred in those early years of my youth.
A few weeks later I found myself drawn back to that shady part of the church on the hill amongst those ancient oaks and mossy gravestones with bottle of beer in my hand. It was a beautiful day, there was a gentle breeze and the crickets, birds and insects chatted in the gentle afternoon, just like those summer days I had spend in this place as child with my Uncle Tom and Tina who were now themselves long since departed. I rose the bottle of beer in the air and said Peter’s name out loud and for a brief moment, from the corner of my eye I thought I saw the flicker of a boy standing in the distance in the summer shade and a smile spread across my face. That day I learned a lesson for good, that if we think of those who are dead and gone and remember them out loud they will live on and never be forgotten.
