Saint Catherine's Dialogue - Treatise on Divine Providence - The Infinite Desire
How finite works are not sufficient for punishment or recompense without the perpetual affection of love.
Then, the Eternal Truth seized and drew more strongly to Himself her desire, doing as He did in the Old Testament, for when the sacrifice was offered to God, a fire descended and drew to Him the sacrifice that was acceptable to Him; so did the sweet Truth to that soul, in sending down the fire of the clemency of the Holy Spirit, seizing the sacrifice of desire that she made of herself, saying: "Do you not know, dear daughter, that all the sufferings, which the soul endures, or can endure, in this life, are insufficient to punish one smallest fault, because the offense, being done to Me, who am the Infinite Good, calls for an infinite satisfaction? However, I wish that you should know, that not all the pains that are given to men in this life are given as punishments, but as corrections, in order to chastise a son when he offends; though it is true that both the guilt and the penalty can be expiated by the desire of the soul, that is, by true contrition, not through the finite pain endured, but through the infinite desire; because God, who is infinite, wishes for infinite love and infinite grief. Infinite grief I wish from My creature in two ways: in one way, through her sorrow for her own sins, which she has committed against Me her Creator; in the other way, through her sorrow for the sins which she sees her neighbors commit against Me. Of such as these, inasmuch as they have infinite desire, that is, are joined to Me by an affection of love, and therefore grieve when they offend Me, or see Me offended, their every pain, whether spiritual or corporeal, from wherever it may come, receives infinite merit, and satisfies for a guilt which deserved an infinite penalty, although their works are finite and done in finite time; but, inasmuch as they possess the virtue of desire, and sustain their suffering with desire, and contrition, and infinite displeasure against their guilt, their pain is held worthy. Paul explained this when he said: If I had the tongues of angels, and if I knew the things of the future and gave my body to be burned, and have not love, it would be worth nothing to me. The glorious Apostle thus shows that finite works are not valid, either as punishment or recompense, without the condiment of the affection of love.
Lesson to self:
We tend to think of sin in terms of size; big sin, little sin and so on but God’s dialogue to Saint Catherine suggests there's a greater perspective on sin. Christ's statement to Pilate, "Therefore, he that hath delivered me to thee hath the greater sin." shows us the idea of big sin, little sin is valid but that was Christ measuring out sin, not fallen men judging from fallen world perspective. In God’s dialogue to Saint Catherine, He acknowledges big sin, little sin but only to clarify that no sin, big or little can be requited for by finite pains, sufferings or penances.
All our sin, regardless of size, has infinite consequences that echo outward from our small, finite perspective. Since our sin has infinite consequences it affects our infinite God which is why He reacted by sacrificing Himself on the cross. Our sin reverberates through time, causing negative reactions from those we hurt, who then respond with more negative reactions, and so on. Every sin we commit causes a negative spiritual chain reaction that reaches into God's infinite eternity. This is why God tells Saint Catherine that even the smallest, most finite fault against God, who is infinitely Good, demands infinite satisfaction. Sin has infinite consequences and must be requited for by infinite penance which seems to leave us doomed since being finite creatures, we cannot offer infinite penance.
But in God's dialogue to Saint Catherine, he goes on to speak of an infinite love for him and an infinite grief for our sins against him. Both of these things grow out of an innate and spiritual magnetism our spirit already has for God, that mysterious Spirit whom we instinctively sense as our Creator. This natural, sometimes subconscious pull we have toward God is the Infinite Desire Saint Catherine speaks of, originating from God's Indwelling Presence, the calm, sometimes subliminal voice of God making himself known to us and igniting the Infinite Desire. And this Infinite Desire for God empowers us to break through our finite disposition to connect with God's infinite nature. This is when the finite pains and penances we endure for our sins take on an infinite quality and touch the Merciful, Sacred Heart of Jesus Christ.
The finite pains and penances we endure for our sins are worthless unless divinely empowered by Infinite Desire for God. But once ignited by the Infinite Desire that connects us to the Infinite God, that soul "receives infinite merit, and satisfies for a guilt which deserved an infinite penalty," because even though, "their works are finite and done in finite time; but, inasmuch as they possess the virtue of desire, and sustain their suffering with desire, and contrition, and infinite displeasure against their guilt, their pain is held worthy."
Pray for us Saint Catherine, that by the gift of the Infinite Desire for God, our finite pains, sufferings, and penances may achieve infinite measure, and be held worthy through Christ our Savior as an acceptable sacrifice against all sin committed against his Holy Name.
