Training
During my twenties (M33) I would go for an occasional run during the summer months, but stopped running when I developed some lung problems (allergic asthma) that went away when I stopped exercising outdoors. During the end of last year I moved from Europe to NYC and have picked up running again. At first, it was mainly a way to stay in shape, but I quickly realized my lungs didn't bother me as much anymore. I used to live in an area with particularly bad air pollution (harbor city with a lot of refineries), so moving away from that has probably helped.
I enjoyed running along the Hudson and in the various parks, so I decided to sign up for some races and was lucky enough to be selected in the lottery for the NYC half marathon. This was the first time I was running with a specific event/distance in mind. I would usually just go out for 30 mins and run at my "normal" pace (5:00-5:15min/km). In decided to go all in and ordered an Garmin Forerunner 955 in November 2022 and quickly got hooked on all the stats.
For the training I selected a training plan from coach Gregg McMillan in the Garmin ecosystem and set a goal time for 1:45:00, this would roughly be my normal pace but for 21 kms instead of the 5 I would normally do. I figured that 4-5 months schould be enough to increase my fitness enough to maintain this. In the beginning I really liked this program, it's 4-5 workouts every week and you could easily reschedule workouts to match your lifestyle. I had a long run on Saturday, some base runs and speed/stride workouts during weekdays. During the first weeks of the program I noticed my knees got a bit sore, so I started to include some bodyweight strength workouts and yoga into my routine.
Around 5-6 weeks before the race I think I encountered some sort of glitch in the program, I would no longer get suggested long runs and all my workouts would be 40-60 mins easy pace runs. Since I also have the Garmin race widget, I cancelled on coach Gregg and just blindly trusted Garmin to tell me what to do based on my "training readiness" and "body battery". This changed the training a bit, got more speedwork (according to Garmin I had an anaerobic shortage in my workouts). I really liked the change in workouts and it gave me some extra motivation to stick with the training.
I had originally set my goal to 1:45, but during February I started to notice that my fitness was increasing faster than I had expected. 1:40 seemed to be doable, during your training Garmin will also predict your race time and I could see this time steadily decrease as the weeks went by. According to Garmin (this company is my messiah) I would be able to run a half marathon in 1:35:47, turns out their prediction was pretty good.
Tapering was also done based on the Garmin race widget and started about 10 days before the race, to my surprise I was still running almost every day, but usually only in 30-40 mins sessions. I think for my next race I'll take a bit more rest than what Garmin suggested, my legs didn't feel totally fresh the morning of the race.
Pre-race
A few days before the race NYRR (the organisation) issued a warning to all runners that it would be "unseasonably cold" during the race. Temperatures around freezing and a cold gusty wind. I would be starting in the first wave, so this had me a bit worried. My wife and a friend accompanied me to the start, so I just brought two running outfits so that I could change clothes based on the conditions at the start.
I accidentally set my alarm an hour later (5:45AM) than I should wake up (4:45AM), but luckily, I was woken up by a garbage truck at 4:40 AM! Ate a bagel with peanut butter and banana, had a coffee, successful bathroom break and got dressed. I felt good, so I decided to try to run with the 1:40 pacer instead of the 1:45. If I didn't like the pace after a few miles, I could always fall back. Took a 5:45 AM subway to Brooklyn with a lot of other runners. The start area was well organised, plenty of toilets and they gave out space blankets to stay warm. Decided that it wasn't that cold, so I gave my thermo baselayers to my wife and ran in shorts, long compression socks, a longsleeve and a lightweight vest. Took a gel about 15 mins before the start and made my way to the corrals.
Race
The corrals weren't extremly busy and could easily find the 1:40 pacer. The start itself was a mess. For some reason NYPD and NYFD got their own corral next to the pros, which meant that during the first 2 miles, the most narrow part of the course, you were making your way through a lot of slower runners. This race has some hills, most of which are during the first 6 miles. I don't know if it was because of these hills, but I felt like the pacer was a bit inconsistent with his pacing. For me it wasn't an even effort, and it most definitely wasn't an even pace. At some point during the downhill part to the Manhattan bridge I felt like we were holding back too much and I decided I was going to run my own race.
I had obtained a 1:40 pace bracelet from the expo while picking up my bib, so I figured I could use that to pace myself and keep an eye on my heart rate on my watch. Based on no prior knowledge I assumed that keeping it between 160 and 170 should be fine. The climb up the Manhattan bridge was awesome and a highlight, The sun was shining, wind wasn't too bad and you could see the reflection of all the runners in the windows of the skyscrapers.
Next up was the FDR drive, we had the wind in our backs for some parts of it so that was great! Sun was still shining and hardly any shade, so I wasn't that cold and happy with my choice of outfit. At some point I realised I had already passed the halfway point and I was still feeling good. I ate my gel and was getting increasingly confident I would be able to finish below 1:40. At the UN building you take a left towards times square, the tall buildings block the sun so it was definitely colder here! Running through times square was fun and a unique experience! At this point I started to feel my knee a bit, but nothing I hadn't experienced before so was able to keep running.
Arriving at central park meant I was almost at the finish line. I'd done a lot of my training here, so I knew what to expect (central park is not flat!). But I was still feeling like I had something extra in the tank, so I had decided to pick up the pace a bit for the last 2-3 miles. Before starting the race I had already decided on the point that I would initiate my sprint to the finish, in hindsight this wasn't a great plan. For about 150 meters the sprint felt great, I was passing people, could see the finish line getting closer, but about 50 meters before the finish my legs started to feel wobbly and my vision got blurry, so I decided to quickly ease up on the sprinting and just run like a normal person for the final part. I'm pretty sure if I would have continued that final push I would have ended up face down on my finish line photo.
Post-race
The wobbly legs and blurry vision quickly went away after I stopped running, got a high five from a random volunteer (loved it). Someone put a space blanket around my shoulders, someone else put a piece of tape on the blanket to keep it closed, the next person handed me my medal and a bit later someone gave me a bag with food and drinks. Everything was extremely well organized, but I can imagine it was a bit more chaotic for the later start waves. The portapotty I used after finish was completely clean still!
I met up with my wife and our friend. I'd forgotten to stop my Garmin watch at the finish, so I wasn't completely sure of my time. Based on my calculation during the run I was about 3 mins below 1:40 around mile 8. They told me the NYRR results page said 1:35:27, I definitly wasn't expecting that for my first half marathon race, but now I want to break 1:30! I'm also running the Staten Island half in September, let's see how much I can improve by that time. Afterwards we got a celebratory donut, spent the rest of the morning in the bath watching sports. My knee is still a bit stiff, but I think it'll be fine by the end of the week. For a next race I'll be incorporating a bit more strength work into my routine. The liked the Garmin race widget more than the "Garmin coaches", seems to be more adaptive. For example, a good nights sleep will increase the intensity of your training the next day, hardly any sleep will subsitute a training session with a rest day.
If you ever get the chance to run this course, do it! Amazing scenery and amazing crowds!

Training
I had my heart set on this race being my first half after watching the full marathon year after year. Miraculously, I applied for the lottery and got in! Around Christmas I started using Hal Higdon's Novice 2 program, which looked pretty manageable. But as the weeks went on and the race got closer, I started incorporating some of Nike's Half Marathon training too. I liked that the higher mileage long runs were about a month out from the race vs. Hal's which capped at 10 miles the week before the race. I got a Peloton tread in the fall too, and found a bunch of great race prep classes on there (specifically loved Robin's NYC Marathon Simulation run!)
We had an unseasonably warm winter here in Virginia, so training wasn't as brutal as I thought originally. It felt like it took weeks to finally get up to double digits, but I finally peaked at 10.6 miles 2 weeks before the race and then slowly started to taper with shorter 3-5 mile runs the weeks leading up to it.
Overall, I was just excited and pumped to get the race done as I had been mentally working up to it for months!
Pre-race
We got to NYC on Thursday with the race on Sunday, and it was awesome to see so many other runners throughout the city over the days leading up to the race. I knew the weather was going to be cold, so I stocked up on hot hands and bought a pair of gloves at the Nike store too.
While I had avoided any nerves up until this point, the night before it started to set in. I laid all my stuff out on Saturday evening and enjoyed a FABULOUS chicken parmesan dinner the night before. Definitely tossed and turned before finally falling asleep after midnight, but woke up on Sunday AM ready to go.
As I mentioned, I'm in Virginia where winters can be snowy and cold or — like this year — unseasonably warm. But when I stepped out of the hotel room on Sunday AM, I knew it was going to be brutal. The "feels like" temp was in the teens, and once I stepped off the subway in Brooklyn the wind was roaring. Even with extra throw-away layers, hot hands, gloves, etc., the wind was cutting right through anything.
However, dealing with the cold somehow distracted me from any nerves about the actual race and the sheer amount of people running this race. I was in Wave 4 and it took about 30 minutes just to get through security. I was glad I gave myself plenty of time to get to the starting line. Luckily, portapotty lines were short and the availability of them in and out of the corral was nice too.
Before I knew it, we were crowded in the corral. Someone next to me said, "The actual race can't be as bad as standing here in this cold." And she was right. This was the worst part of the whole day.
Race
The gun went off and we started through the park. The first mile my feet felt like absolute bricks, and the first mile was much narrower than the rest of the race, leaving everyone crowded in until the turn around mile 2. After all the weeks of training, I felt a bit disassociated — I was in NYC! Running my first half marathon! SHIT it's cold!
I stopped at mile 2 for my one quick bathroom break of the race, and then once I hit mile 3 in Brooklyn, I started to see the crowds. Even in teen temperatures, people were out cheering and yelling. It was incredible. I felt myself tear up at this point (and several others throughout the race) as we all ran together. It was amazing.
Around mile 4 I had my first gel and saw the Manhattan Bridge up ahead. Going over the bridge was such a surreal experience. In my opinion, people over-exaggerated the incline on the bridge, but maybe I'm just more used to running hills in my neck of the woods. At one point, I paused the music as we went over the Manhattan Bridge and it was just the silence of footsteps as people took in the view. It was the coolest part of the course, IMO.
Off the bridge and into Manhattan and the crowds were epic. I knew FDR was coming up and thought, "oh okay this is a nice flat area where I can just focus on running." However, this was for sure the worst part of the race. You're pretty much running on the highway, with cars coming the other direction. It's an incredibly long stretch. The sun is in your face. It was just the worst part of the whole thing.
Finally, mile 9, we were back on the streets. I was so happy to get off that highway. I knew my family was stationed in Times Square at mile 11, and had some extra gas in the tank to get to them. My hamstrings were definitely feeling tight around here, but just kept going. Running through a closed-off Times Square is a bucket-list experience for any runner. Really surreal and awesome.
The end was near and we entered Central Park! I swear the last 800M felt like another 2 miles. But crossed the finish line and looked at my official time: 30 seconds shorter than the 2:25 pace band I had been following. YESSSS.
(My Strava splits are a bit wonky with the GPS/city buildings but I clocked negative splits throughout the race according to the official NYRR dashboard!)
Post-race
Met up with my family and got some brunch around the corner. Took a warm shower and two days later, feeling slightly sore but ultimately so happy. I know for many runners, the cold got them — and rightfully so! It was brutal, especially if you're not used to cold weather running like that. But ultimately, I thought the race was incredibly well-organized, the course was epic and I'm already starting to think about the next one.
This group was really helpful and insightful for me as a new runner and first-time half marathoner, so just wanted to repay with my own insight from the race!

2023.03.21 16:42 Queasy-Assistance133 Pending marriage based i485 and i130 ( F1 STEM OPT)
Hi,
This is the first time I am posting to this group. I learned a lot from this group and i cannot thank enough for the contribution of this group.
I am currently on F1 visa and working with OPT STEM Extension. My employer also submitted application for h1b lottery this year. My wife is a permanent resident, who petitioned for me last year. We submitted i130, i485, i765, and i131 concurrently as the visa category F2A was current. Our priority date is April 26, 2022. Her income does not satisfy the sponsorship requirements. So my lawyer submitted i864a, where i am the household member and also the intending immigrant. My field office is Buffalo, NY.
I just received the combo card with travel permit a week ago which has two years term ending March 2025. Now i am confused over several questions in my mind.
- Do i have to start using the new ead for my current employer who has right now the STEM extension EAD?What I understand is using the new pending i 485 ead will cancel my f1 status. But I want to remain in the f1 status until I adjust if my green card is accepted within my stem opt ead expiration date which September 2024. Can i keep working with the STEM EAD with my current employer until I adjust if the adjustment is within STEM EAD expiration?
- If i use this combo card for international travel, will that cancel my f1 status? And will i be in trouble at the port of entry because of this f1 status?
- Does working with pending i485 ead conflicts the i864a condition where my income was based on f1 opt?
Any suggestions will be really appreciated. Thank you so much.

2023.03.20 01:39 SolamenteAmore The lady doth protest too much, methinks 🤥😎
I tuned in for 2 min in past few days… I hope that others here are able to see how pathetic of a liar the streamer is???
Streamer: “I don’t even know where Cornell is?? Is it in Canada?”
“Why would I go to a school so expensive?(you’d pay by scam scholarships & using your disabilities to get funding & mommy Dubai paying the rest & school loans to attend the Ivy League you were accepted at in Ithaca NY 😎)
“I hate winter & the cold”
“Goldman Sachs isn’t my thing, my thing is not that thing” “I’m not a finance bro dumbfucks”
I imagine she has spent days repeating so many things like this to try & convince people she didn’t just offer up all info herself on Sam Pepper’s stream with her co-conspirator(JT duh)… the Scientology dynamic sociopathic duo we all never asked for
If you don’t yet know what a sociopathic narcissist scrambling looks like, it looks like the steamer protesting too much on stream when someone has made her aware that legal consequences will follow her, no matter the lies she spins.
For those doubters, streamer got a 1570 on SAT…she is indeed Mensa genius & is achieving a 3.94 grade point in COMPUTER SCIENCE, these stats combined with her ethnicity & a school NOT(yet 😎)knowing she is the racist doxxing streamer known as PMT, ARE all merits to be accepted into an Ivy League.
I think some of you don’t realize that a person can have savant like talent or intelligence & be an absolute idiot in life. Unabomber is one example… There are so many high IQ sociopaths & failures in the worlds, also just people with super low EQ that fail in life miserably. What you want is a high EQ in life for happiness & success not an IQ…
If you are fortunate to get a mix of EQ & IQ, BOOM 💥 you hit the lottery 🙌🏼
*BTW I by no means think it is bad for a person with disabilities, mentally or physically to receive accommodations, funding or scholarships… was merely stating the hypocrisy of a streamer who said “Autistic people should die” & mocked other disabilities, to then benefit from gaining funding for similar disabilities. The same goes for her benefiting from her ethnic diversity, she only uses it for her convenience & benefit, meanwhile hides it & spouts ethnic hate for sport.

2023.03.15 02:43 RiskyBusiness34 Anyone here NY/NJ Port Authority PD?
Hey all, I’ve lurked this sub for a long time, posted once. Currently a transitioning service member. I was wondering if anyone here was NY/NJ PA Police? I’ve heard it’s pretty competitive, but a great career. I was curious how often they hire/expected 123rd class? I know it’s a lottery process, but is that lottery based off of picking names from their “Recruit Network”?
