Asvab arithmetic reasoning quizlet

21 years old with a bit of a wrap sheet

2023.06.04 05:14 Curious_Gas5558 21 years old with a bit of a wrap sheet

I’ve wanted to join the military for a very long time, I attempted to do so at 17 but because of my situation (all my choices in the end regardless of situation) I fell into a bad crowd and now being 21 I have around 6-7 total misdemeanors on about 3-4 different cases.
There is a colonel who is a councilor at my local center stone who I’m going to be talking with very soon in about a week, from the information I have already received he believes I have a good chance but assuming he would like to fully meet me and get to know me before doing any kind of work on his end military wise witch I 110% do not have any hate or hard feelings towards. The question here today is what you think my chances are if I do get some sort of help from him to my knowledge the only thing he could do is give me a letter of recommendation/ character witness letter to help me obtain a waiver.
If there is anything I could do in the meantime to help on my end not meaning physically getting ready or anything like that but to help better my chances of obtaining said waiver (the service I’m attempting to join is the United States Army).
I have already took and passed the Asvab almost say about a year ago, I think I know they’re good for up to 2 years before I’m even allowed to take another.
I really want this and I finally manned up about 8 months ago cut ties with everyone that I know and got away from drugs (those are my charges mostly weed one poss of a narcotic drug and one controlled substance ). I do have an owi from about 2-3 years ago. No felony’s after I complete this round of probation as they will drop the only felony I have. (the reason I’m at my center stone now is a type of NA/AA program).
Im being genuine and I don’t mean to come off as an entitled fuck like the rest of my generation, I want to better my self and get my family’s name out of the mud to ensure when I do have kids they will be took care of.
I think know if you don’t take the collage they offer you, you can pass the option down.
I’m not looking for a “free ride” serve the minimum years and get the VA benefits etc.
I would love to make this my full blown career and possibly become a recruiter myself to help the people who have had similar life’s out.
My charges are listed below. ————————————————————————— 35-48-4-6(a)/F6: Possession of a Narcotic Drug, (will be dropped after I complete probation) 35-48-4-11(a)(1)/MA: Possession of Marijuana ————————————————————————— 9-30-5-1(c)/MC: Operating a Vehicle with a Schedule I or II Controlled Substance or its Metabolite i, 9-30-5-2(a)/MC: Operating a Vehicle While Intoxicated ————————————————————————— 35-48-4-7(a)/MA: Possession of a Controlled Substance-Possession of a Schedule I, II, III or IV cont, 35-48-4-11(a)(1)/MA: Possession of Marijuana, 35-48-4-8.3(b)(1)/MC: Possession of Paraphernalia ————————————————————————— 35-48-4-11(a)(1)/MB: Possession of Marijuana, 35-48-4-8.3(b)(1)/MC: Possession of Paraphernalia —————————————————————————

2023.06.03 18:22 AloneGrab6900 Having a really hard time understanding the math portion of the asvab.

I took a practice test on the Math knowledge side of things and scored 6/25 right which is awful and 15/30 for arithmetic reasoning can someone please share any free resources to improve math skills? Video would be highly preferred.

2023.06.03 13:27 siefca Should all Clojure functions be polymorphic by default?

More than 10 years ago my adventure with Ruby language was ending and friendship with Clojure started to form. I was drawn to Ruby mainly because it tried to make everything an object (uniform interface) and had nice support for metaprogramming with metaclasses, eigenclass and so on.
With this perspective in mind, I think it is kind of important for me to be able to change the program in a way that I don't have to make any changes in its existing source code written in files nor use wrappers with conversions and coercions to make it compatible with new stuff. The qualities mentioned above were ways to achieve that. Of course, with great power comes great responsibility so there were times when so called monkey patching with mixins was a problem for the Ruby community. New, cool libraries changing core elements of the language in subtle ways were sometimes causing some other libraries to break. I think that was later remediated with so called traits (as far as I remember) so changes to language could be constrained/limited to a scope.
In Clojure I've found more of such qualities, including syntactic macros, protocols and multimethods, plus nice support for laziness. After couple of years I practically realized that polymorphism is not a feature of object-oriented programming paradigm but something broader. Then I realized my personal discovery was a kind of common truth and one just need to leave this paradigm-comfort-zone to see that. :) But, to the point..
Yesterday I was invited to some social event and met my friend from previous job who asked me about Julia programming language. I've had no konwledge about it besides i read somewhere that some people are considering it homoiconic, and some are not. This morning I went through the official docs and saw it has macros (one can even use reverse notation to create expressions!) and it is build around multiple method dispatch. Suddenly I felt drawn again so decided to check what is that feature, and then it hit me: there is this quality present in both Ruby and in Julia which allows to modify the behavior of built-ins which sometimes is very helpful. And I think it's not in Clojure, and probably for good reasons. Or not?
What if all functions in Clojure could be multimethods by default, or use protocols, or be higher-order? Example: when making a library that adds a data type for things which can be added, it needs to define its own function for it. But it is so tempting to unify that and somehow extend the built-in + function, without tricks like rebinding the original. In this case it would be something like clojure.algo.generic.arithmetic but for all functions (built-in and newly created with defn).
Are there Lisp dialects built around this approach (multimethod-centric or protocol-centric), or the idea of having such design would not be too useful because of increasing the level of "the Lisp Curse" or because of performance impact?

2023.06.03 09:00 shaggy2gay Porn addiction is an idiotic, self-indulgent waste of life

I am one of the worst-case scenarios. My body is wrecked from a lifetime of porn addiction. I look at what porn is now, what kids have access to - and I look into the future of AI-driven infinitely customized immersive narcotic psychedelic unfettered sexual gratification and I fucking shudder in my marrow. I want to weep that so many people are careening straight towards the iceberg that sank me. I want to vomit thinking of the suffering that is to come for so many.
If you're on this sub and you're struggling to find answers, please take my word for it that you need to sober up fast. You need to get real about what your problem is and how to fix it, and get busy fixing it. Life after 25-odd years of porn addiction is fucking bleak. It's a fucking nightmare. I am in hell. You will be in hell with me.
Here is what doesn't work: 99% of everything that people say to do about it. Journal. Get in touch with your Unconscious Drives. Go to therapy. Get an accountability partner. Find Christ. Log your triggers. Delete your caches. Burn your computer in the yard. Take up weightlifting and falconry. Go to Meetings. Run. Run run run away from the problem. Spend the rest of your life running and licking your wounds and telling yourself you're a diseased wounded animal. None of this works long-term. A "mosaic" solution to the problem is not an effective one. To adopt a scattershot strategy of throwing a bunch of bullshit at the wall and hoping that it sticks is to set yourself up for failure.
The truth is that all of this is a choice. You're being weak and self-indulgent. The reason why you watch porn isn't because you're "distracting yourself from unresolved issues." It's because you like watching dicks go in. It's because the pleasure of watching porn is too much for you to resist. Even as your life falls apart. You have to see the tits. You have to see the gangbangs. You have to see whatever the fuck. It's more important to you than saving your relationship, your job, your family, your life. In the fraction-of-a-second moral arithmetic of your decision to succumb to the temptation, you don't give a shit about the things that are actually important.
The key to stopping the addiction is to fess up that you're being selfish. That you're doing something that is, at this point, harmful and immoral and stupid. It is stupid. You are stupid for continuing to do it. I don't care how taboo it is to say that. I don't care how violently the received wisdom of the therapists will oppose the notion. You're being a bad person and you shouldn't let yourself off the hook for it. You're throwing yourself under the bus, and all the people whose lives you influence.
It is, at root, a very simple problem, and a voluntary one. You always choose. Always always always, you choose to do it.
Snap out of it. It will ruin your fucking life. It will make everything that is really important to you worse, or take it away from you completely. Annihilation is not romantic. What awaits you is a void of pain and sexual irrelevance and worthlessness. You must take this seriously. You must grow up. You must say "no" and stop dithering around with silly half-measures like day counters and replacement hobbies. You must commit yourself to carrying the full burden of your own self-responsibility. You must stop.
Stop.

2023.06.02 21:47 Prior_Public_5045 11b vs 91b

Hello! I just recently signed papers to the Army, but haven’t went through MEPS. I have a 42 on my ASVAB and out my options I decided between 11b(Infantry)and 91b(Wheeled Vehicle Mechanic)
The reasons: My Great Grandpa was part of the Infantry, My Grandpa was part of the Infantry, and My Uncle was part of the Infantry. I have heard story from each of them and fell in love with the brotherhood, courage, and embrace the suck mentality. All these men were scared boys and chose to do something that would change their lives forever
91b I thought about doing because it’s a skilled trade, and after the military I could get job as a mechanic. I am not a car guy but I love mechanical systems, and always have had love for them.
Thank you for hearing my reasons, if you can help with more information, I would be grateful.

2023.06.02 18:42 Army_Bot Summary For: Weekly Question Thread (05/15/2023 to 05/21/2023)

I’ve heard that going airborne will end up screwing up your back and knees up hard, but that also it’s more about the amount of rucking airborne units do.
Is the large amount of rucking the case for everyone who’s airborne or specifically infantry? For example if I went in as a 13B with a option 4, would I ruck as much as an airborne infantrymen or is the general complaint of shot back and knees about being infantry and airborne?

I ets'ed in 07/2017 then reenlisted in 04/2023, so I'm past the 5 years. But when I signed my contract there were only orders for AIT. When I asked the counselor he said, "You don't go back to Basic. You go to Fort X to in process, then head to AIT." Yet, here I am getting sent to BCT.
Anything I can do here?
I'm not really hungry but I'll take one contract for the Coast Guard, please.

We will be doing 5 SL jumps with a Royal Lao Jump Master, U.S. Army Jump Master, and Australian Jump Master, As a result, we will be awarded wings from the RLA, the US Army "Jump Wings," and the Australian Parachutist wings. Am I authorized to wear the US Army "Jump Wings" on my Cadet uniform as I will have been awarded them for jumping with a US Jump Master, but have not completed Airborne School? I understand the foreign wings are authorized, but was concerned about the US Wings, as I believe I may have found myself in a 'gray zone.' If anyone has some guidance, I would greatly appreciate it. - Have a great day.

I've been in for six years, currently an 11B E5 but hoping to pickup soon (ALC complete and all that jazz). Right now my parents are in South Carolina specifically around the fort Jackson area. They're not in good health so I am trying to see if I can volunteer to be a drill sergeant or recruiter to cut my DEROS short and take those assignments.
My questions are basically:
Can I leave an OCONUS assignment early to volunteer for drill/recruiting?
And if so, am I able to pick my location as a drill sergeant or recruiter if I volunteer, compared to being DA selected.
Any questions would be appreciated. I've gotten like seven different answers between my career counselor, PSG, internet, and even the recruiting teams and branch managers:

Im leaving soon for basic and Im curious; What MOS's in the army are the best and worst for quality of life? I know everyone is going to say "it depends" because if you like being outside in the woods, you are likely to enjoy being in the infantry more than a supply guy, and I understand that. However there are some jobs that are objectively cushy and some jobs that objectively suck.
Some things that would make a community suck
-horrible leadership -consistently long hours - lack of unit pride - lack of comradery -lack of purpose
some things that would make a community nicer
-better work/life balance - stationed at fewer bases/ less relocation of family -high unit pride/comradery
I am especially curious of quality of life within combat arms as well as EOD and intel, but I wanna hear about any job/community if its really good or really bad.
Thanks for any input.

My boyfriend is thinking of joining the US Army. No kids and no want for kids, so don't have to take that into consideration. We do live together, and we do have pets (because i know its been said to consider pets) So...Pros and cons of joining the military? What do you wish you knew before joining the military that you didn't find out until after joining? What did you have as a concern before joining that wasn't really much of a concern after? What wasn't a concern and it should have been the entire time? What should one joining be leery of? What about life after the military? Job opportunities, civilian life, difficulty adjusting, dealing with the VA (do you HAVE to use the VA once out of the military? I know my dad has constant issues with them) Just trying to gather as much information as possible so he can make the best decision for himself and what he wants in life long-term with as many facts as possible..after all, once he joins, he's property of the US government for the remainder of his contract and then some) Any help is very much appreciated and of course, thank you all for your role and your sacrifices in keeping us safe. I know it's not always easy, but it's much appreciated.

I have a pretty good idea of what I want to do, but I’d like some inside knowledge to make sure I’m making the right choices now that will prepare me down the road. I know it sounds cliché, but simply put I want to jump out of planes and make things go boom. I’m very active, love grueling physical work, and want to push myself in what I do. What MOSs/schools/units should I be looking into now that will set me up for this?

I still haven't received any email about my levy brief or updates about going into IPPS-A to complete Member Elections (I already have on my own). Could this be an issue if the new official email is now "name"[email protected]? This is the email I've been checking.

Just graduated and will be attending West Point next year.

2023.06.02 18:10 StrangerNo9431 Guidance on preparing for the GRE from scratch (have a few years).

Hello,
I wanted to get a bit of guidance on establishing a plan/ course of action. I have about 3 years on hand to take the GRE and score 320+.
To give a bit of background, I have not done math in years nor read books in a very long time (my vocabulary needs significant improvement). I am native english speaker and did my undergrad e in the states. Moreover, I have not done math in years and really heavily relied on calculators in undergrad as they were allowed.
What can I do to edify my self in a 1 year time frame to edify myself enough to be able to begin actually studying for the GRE the subsequent year. My reason for taking the GRE is an MBA program, I want to do an MSCS/MBA and the MBA part requires GRE or GMAT. The MS part doesn't require GRE and the time to apply for admission to the MBA part is one year from the start of the MS. My goal is to begin attendance for the MS in two years from now.
I am ready to work extremely hard, I don't mind starting for basic arithmetic or easy english to get things moving. Please if you can give me some guidance I would really appreciate it.

4 Practical tips for Hacking IXL
Many students dislike IXL due to the complexity of the questions it assigns. Cheating on IXL consistently may lead to a high point total, but it will not result in any learning. As a result, we’ve developed some practical recommendations to assist you in responding to these questions. Additionally, these questions will alter your perspective regarding IXL, and you may begin to enjoy your practice sessions.
Errors propel you closer to success.
Errors are a natural part of learning; view them positively and use them to improve. For instance, if you receive a low grade on a subject, review your notes and repeat the test. You will see that your results are sure to improve. Similarly, the more you practice, the more opportunities you will have to get good points.
Establish realistic goals and commemorate them
A decent result of 80 indicates that you are knowledgeable about the subject. Similarly, a higher score indicates more excellent proficiency with the issue. However, it would be beneficial to begin with realistic and attainable goals to maintain self-motivation for a higher score. If you earn 100 points on every subject, you have mastered it. Celebrate your excellent score by taking a break from academics or doing something you enjoy, as a high score is what most university students strive for.
Between practice sessions, take breaks.
Between lengthy practice sessions on IXL, you must take pauses or obtain some fresh air. When you are inactive, IXL automatically stores your progress. Intervals between sessions will assist in recharging your energy so that you can resume your practice. When you’re ready to continue your work, you can return to the page and begin practicing. Especially math teachers are highly benefited. The program detects inactivity if you are inactive for a long time.
Keep notes and a pencil on hand to jot down math problems.
Conclusion:
Solving than performing mental math on most questions is vital. Also, it is preferable to solve them in a notebook. This way, you’ll be able to answer more questions without exhausting yourself. Additionally, completing mental math problems needs more work; if the user answers problems in a notepad, he may do so more quickly.

Date [standardized human time]: 28 August 2137
Well, if the doctors’ recommendations are anything to go by, Jonah was good to start this power armor training regimen with Gina, but he not quite ready for testing out Venlil-Prime gravity. To Jonah, this just meant more time to get used to using his, and I quote, “sick, slick, robo-kicks for ‘self-defense.’” I’ve looked into what humans usually consider “self-defense,” and I’m fairly certain that this was closer to their definition of “excessive force.” Not that I minded, mind you. Certainly, it would make me feel safer if I was going to be following Jonah to these… former… Federation planets.
…Yeah, was I having questions about this being “excessive?” Nix those.
She had picked us up bright and early and brought us a bit further out than where Digit would usually have taken us. …Not really that much further, though. It turns out that tree-line was obstructing a much larger base that Gina’s armored squadron had been training at.
That certainly explained how Digit was able to make supply runs as quickly as he could.
Jonah and I hopped off of the back of her flatbed and landed ourselves onto the tarmac, still noshing on our sandwiches. Wherever Jonah had picked up on asking for them to add mozzarella sticks to these omelette sandwiches, as well as some of the jerky they had on the shelves, he had picked up a great idea! I must, at some point, learn this “Way of the Ocky.”
She, herself, was just done downing a “breakfast hot dog,” some kind of omelette with a “hot dog” sausage, with concerning speed and ferocity. I was almost reminded of what Jonah and I do with… his entire body in private… though, more often than not, just a specific part of his. Well, anyway, she wiped herself off and waved us over to the field, where she had quite an elaborate obstacle course set up. Through this, some of her squadmates seemed to have already gotten started on taking laps through the open-face labyrinth, and – …Huh, I guess I am really starting to take on Jonah’s mannerisms, aren’t I?
“Alright, Jonah, seeing as you only have the boots – …Oh, right, right! Al-l-l-l-most forgot!”
She skipped over to the passenger seat door of her truck, opening it and, with a slightly strained grunt, pulled out and dropped a large case onto the ground. She opened it and, with the case lid folding down, a new boot, symmetrical to the one that had cradled his shot leg, awaited inside.
“Can’t exactly be too effective if you don’t have the… well, not ‘full’ kit, but at least it’s now symmetrical!”
Jonah stepped forward, then again, in wide-eyed amazement. He looked to her, then to it, then to her again, not fully committing to grabbing it then and there.
“…Who do you need me to kill?”
“Pfft, if I needed that, why wouldn’t I just do it myself? Nah, just a ‘thank you’ for… well, giving my uncle something to do with his idle hands.”
Jonah approached further in tiny increments, making Gina wave at the thing in order for Jonah to finish picking it up and swapping out the gimped version of the boot for the same foot. I grabbed the neural mesh from Jonah’s bag and helped Jonah get fitted for this training, but not without his snide, sexual humor.
“Oh, and I thought it was erotic for you to slide it off of me~?”
“You know? I’ve been thinking about getting you some thigh-highs.”
An interrupting krakotl voice chirped from behind us, landing as Jonah turned around in surprise, then annoyance.
“Oh, let me tell you, way more comfortable than you’d think!”
Gina was quick to saddle up to his side and introduce him.
“Jonah, Viath, this is Macar, one of our latest – !”
Jonah dropped the boots and kicked them towards Gina, storming off in what I would, in retrospect, recognize as mock outrage, seemingly parodying himself.
“I was wrong! Power armor sucks and I hate it now! Power armor is stupid and is for gay baby nerds!”
…Nah, he wouldn’t want me to let him give up on this anywhere near as quickly. Plus, this was a massive opportunity to funny, and I was not going to pass this up.
“But Jonah, you’re at least bi, you’re a colossal nerd, and…! …Well, I could start calling you ‘baby?’”
Jonah stopped mid-step, swiveled around and returned to pick up the boots.
“Fair enough, I suppose.”
While I found this bit humorous, as did Gina a little, Macar was, reasonably, completely lost.
“Wait, why did he – ?”
Gina was quick to explain.
“Racism.”
Oh…!”
“Yeah. He’s been getting better, I’ve been told.”
Jonah raised a finger to contribute to the explanation.
“Yeah, the last few days had some… real wake-up calls about what holding onto grudges like that does to a [email protected]. Just don’t go about – “
“Heh, I guess us fellow ‘predators’ ought to – !“
“And you have immediately worn out all goodwill I would’ve tried giving to you. Keep your ‘talking to me’ and, actually, general ‘interacting with me’ at a maximum of zero from now until further notice.”
“…Okay, fair – “
“Man, you must suck at arithmetic, that is so many more times than zero!”
Gina and I shrugged at each other, silently agreeing that this shenaniganry had gotten as much funny out of it as it was going to. She waved a slightly dejected Macar back to the course, and with this distraction out of the way, we got Jonah’s boots on securely. With this matter resolved, Gina guided Jonah to a smaller section of the course, which seemed to just be a stretch of track, mostly sparce save for one lane with hurdles placed in intervals.
“Alright, so given that you’ve only got the legs, your options are a bit limited. Here, this is a relatively safe environment for you to try out your rocket-dashing and turning.”
Taking a good look at the rubber-and-polyurethane track, particularly with how irregular and potentially pointy it was, I felt it right to raise some concerns.
“Are we sure this is safe? If Jonah trips and falls, that’s going to be a serious case of road-rash!”
“Ah, he’ll be fine! Plus, he already figured out to run un-boosted before trying to turn on the rockets!
“Well, that’s – oh, crap.”
As I was yapping at Gina, Jonah, indeed, had already started getting a good run in. Even with the boots putting a few pounds on his weight, he was still getting a relatively good speed – a-a-a-and there were the jets. The immediate boost to his speed was barely noticeable, but soon enough, he was getting pretty fast!
“Oh damn – ! Wait, how do I brake?”
Gina shouted out to him casually.
“Kegel with feet forward!”
“How do I do a kegel – ? Why is that the brake?!”
“Just clench your asshole!”
Evidently what followed was him trying to… I’m going to have to look into what a “kegel” even is, but whatever the case, he ended up tripping into some very conveniently placed cushions, where he was forced into a somersault into a faceplant into a much larger wall of cushion.
Well, catching up to him could count for my cardiovascular exercise for today. Gina and I dashed to his side, where Gina chuckled to herself, and shortly after, Jonah joined her in this vocalization. I decided concern was probably my best approach.
“You, uh… you alright, Jonah?”
“Yeah, just, uh… y-y-yep, some muscles are gonna feel sore in a bit.”
He was already in the process of peeling himself off of the thing, but I knelt down and picked up my mans to complete the motion. Gina rested a hand on his shoulder, small speech about progress or whatever already cued up.
“Don’t worry, I’ve taken a good few tumbles before getting used to that thing. Braking can be a bit tricky – …Oh! Right, right, hold on for a moment-t-t-t!”
Gina flitted over to a strangely conveniently placed locker in the middle of an open field for some reason or another, and from this, procured a rather nifty pair of gloves, flinging them over to Jonah.
“That’s a neat little tool that helps with braking and turning on a dime. Watch the torque on the arms, but it seems to do the trick if you’re careful.”
“Okay, thanks, Nintendo.”
…Yeah, neither Gina nor I could make sense of that one. Jonah must have realized that his reference game had gone far too obscure for what he was trying to convey, so he readied his explanation.
“Okay, so when Nintendo released the Nintendo Sixty-Four, people started complaining about the controller’s joystick – “
Yeah, even with the explanation, it was just a bit too… eh. Gina must’ve thought so, too, given her interruption.
“Jesus, the N64? That was, what, over a century ago? God, you really are a nerd! …And gay.”
Funny opportunity: recognized.
“And baby.”
“And – “
Jonah held a finger up at Gina’s last addition to his ribbing.
“Please, Viath’s my boyfriend. He gets the ‘calling me ‘baby’’ license.”
“Okay, fair, fair… So, uh, did you want to try those gloves out, or – ?”
“Right, right. Back to the, uh… beginning of the track, then.”
Thankfully, the awkwardness of this dialogue would dissipate from our collective consciousnesses as we continued to train Jonah in this power armor doohickery.
- - - - -
Sorry for the wait. New job and working out anxieties and motivations around it and all.
On an unrelated note, I feel like I've really gotten writing awkward and slightly uncomfortable dialogue down pat.

2023.06.01 21:42 DEPoolee [USMC] Trying to commission, do I need to retake the ASVAB as prior service?

I've EAS'd from the Marine Corps 3 years ago, finished my IRR time a year ago and now I'm looking to commission.
According to my OCS recruiter, I may have to retake the ASVAB. I'd rather not since the score I have on record is already high and I don't want to go to MEPS again.
After doing some of my own research, this is what I found in MCRCO 1100.2A, the Officer Commissioning Manual:
  1. ASVAB. Officer program applicants must obtain a minimum score of 74 on the Armed Forces Qualifying Test (AFQT) portion of the ASVAB. ASVAB scores are valid for two years for non-service members. In order to verify qualifying scores, the MEPCOM 680, Request for Examination, will be utilized in the case of non-prior service applicants. In the case of applicants under their original MSO, the DD Form 1966, Record of Military Processing, or the Test Score Page from MCTFS may be used as proof of qualifying scores.
I think my recruiter's reasoning for thinking I may have to retake the ASVAB is because I've been a civilian for greater than 2 years. However, I think I'd argue as a veteran I'm exempt from being considered a "non-service member".
Do I still need to take the ASVAB?

2023.06.01 17:21 MonkeyCrumbs People are overestimating GPT capabilities

Just wanted to bring a discussion up about this now that society has gotten to play around with LLM technology.
While I think EVENTUALLY this kind of tech will lead to truly amazing advancements in human civilization, I think the ‘new car smell’ is misrepresenting todays capabilities, and even the near-term ones as we look out over the next few years.
At current glance, LLMs appear to be super-human in their capabilities. And in some ways, they are. They have more knowledge than any one single individual on the planet and they can access it, in some ways, more quickly. However, their ability to REASON is extremely poor and elementary at this stage. And when you start really diving deep into it, you truly understand it’s limitations. We’re at the baby stages. GPT4 is the most advanced and I would still describe it as toddler status. Bard can’t solve elementary arithmetic to an accurate degree because it’s simply not DESIGNED to be a reasoning engine. It’s designed to predict your next word to its best ability. GPT4 with Wolfram can do some amazing things mathematically, but it still falters, it can still be inaccurate, and more importantly it’s not integrated into the knowledge-base of GPT. Once you realize it’s just being fed JSON and working back and forth with an API, you realize how truly limited all of this currently is.
Humans are amazing creatures. We have an uncanny ability to reason. We have an enormous “context” window. And LLMs are only one part of solving the AGI problem. There is a lot more work to be done before AGI can effectively replace lots of jobs. Many companies will soon realize their dreams of saving billions of dollars by replacing employees with AI will only lead to more problems and the eventual rehiring of people to fix the messes they started.

2023.05.31 22:03 Neat_Biscotti8950 Does this mean Arithmetic is a bad test of working memory?

Was just going through the famous study of 8 prodigies who were given the Stanford-Binet fifth edition.(Source in comments)
I observed that of the 7 subjects that were given the full test, 5 showed a discrepancy of 16-55 points between quantitative reasoning and working memory.
Does this mean Arithmetic is not a good test of working memory? Is that why it was moved from WMI to fluid reasoning in WISC-V?

2023.05.31 01:41 YouCanDoThings What's a website/book/source where I can find creative maths and physics problems to solve?

This might sound like some sneaky promotion stuff but bare with me.
So I solved these 100 day challenge questions from brilliant (Yup! those youtube sponsor guys)- brilliant.org/100day2017/
and found them really fun. It does need some knowledge of physics or maths but most of problems require more intuition than brutal arithmetic skills. There's no way I'd subscribe to them for multiple reasons but I was hoping to add similar questions to my routine. Is there any other source where I can find them?
I also enjoyed the book "Can you outsmart an economist?" so more puzzles like those would also be appreciated.

2023.05.30 21:04 Temp3ror Compilation of prompt engineering basic rules

Compilation of prompt engineering basic rules
I've compiled an extensive list of tips and tricks about basic prompt engineering. Hope it helps someone getting started.
Prompt Engineering - Part I
What Are Prompts in AI?
A key part of using conversational artificial intelligent agents is giving it prompts. They are a piece of text that is fed into the agent (AI) and used by the model to make a response. In other words, the process of making text in the AI starts with prompts.
The model uses the information in the prompt to figure out what’s going on and come up with a response that fits.
Depending on the user’s goal, a prompt could be a question, a statement, a short story, a task, or a topic. They can be as easy as one word or as hard as an entire essay. A good prompt should be specific, clear, and give enough background information for the AI to understand the topic and come up with a good answer.
Some quick tips:
  • The AI has been trained with data from many languages, but the amount of English text in the training material is much higher. It can be helpful to run queries in English and only then translate the output using tools like DeepL.
  • The AI processes up to 4,096 tokens in an input (≈ 4,000 words), any character beyond that is ignored without a message. A token is roughly equivalent to a word, depending on the use case.
  • The response generation can be stopped with the stop button above the input field if you notice that the AI is going in the wrong direction.
  • If too much knowledge has been exchanged during a chat, it may be helpful to start a new chat so that subsequent replies are not corrupted.
  • Although chatting with the AI sometimes feels almost human, polite phrases like “please” and “thank you” are unnecessary. The AI does not need eloquent instructions, just clear ones.
  • If you want to ask follow-up questions on the same topic in the AI, it’s best to keep the current conversation going. When you want to switch topics, hit the “New topic” button. This gives the model a clean slate — it won’t get confused and merge unrelated topics.
  • Use the right model for the right job. If you’re looking for stories, poems, jokes or other imaginative answers, use the “more creative” mode of the AI. But if you’re looking for just the facts, use the “more precise” mode. This will yield succinct and fact-based responses. “Balanced” mode is the default and works well for most scenarios.
General rules
  1. Construct an initial prompt. Create a simple, concise prompt to begin the process. This can be refined and expanded as needed.
Summarize the following news article:
  1. Evaluate and iterate. Assess the output generated by the AI in response to the initial prompt. Modify the prompt as necessary to improve the outcome. Iterate until the desired result is achieved.
Provide a concise, 3-sentence summary of the following news article:
  1. Provide a clear context. Providing context to the AI can each help in creating a more useful response. Context includes:
  • Background information
  • Specific Requirements
  • Constraints
Address potential ambiguity in your prompts by specifying the context or domain in which the AI should generate its response.
Assuming I am a beginner in the field of AI, explain the concept of deep learning and its applications.
Explain how neural networks are used in the context of natural language processing.
I have 3 years of experience as a software developer. Now I got bored with coding and want to transition to another career. My education qualifications are B. Tech in computer science, and I am well-versed in understanding the business side of software as well. Suggest a list of career options that are easy for me to transition.
  1. Set content boundaries. Establish clear boundaries for the content you want the AI to generate, specifying what should and should not be included.
Write a humorous, family-friendly story about a robot that learns to cook.
  1. Be specific. Omit needless words. When crafting a prompt for the AI, it's crucial to be specific, concise and clear about the information you want. Providing clear instructions helps the model generate accurate and relevant responses. Omit needless words for clearer, more effective communication with the AI.
Avoid using overly complex or ambiguous language and aim to be as specific as possible in your prompts.
Establish a clear purpose for the prompt. For instance, when summarizing a news article, the aim is to obtain a brief, informative overview.
Explain the difference between artificial intelligence and machine learning.
Write a funny soccer story for kids that teaches the kid that persistence is key for success in the style of Rowling.
Provide a summary of [X], including its history, features, and configuration.
I am a 26-year-old female looking to lose 6 kg in 3 months. Create a 1700 calories Indian diet plan for two weeks. Do not give me non-vegetarian options on Monday, Thursday, and Saturday. It should be a lean protein diet with carbs (30%), protein (40%), fiber (20%), and fat (10%).
  1. Keep focus and relevance. A well-defined prompt should have a clear purpose and focus, helping to guide the conversation and keep it on track. Avoid using overly broad or open-ended prompts, which can lead to disjointed or unfocused conversations.
Make sure that your prompts are relevant to the user and the conversation and maintain a consistent tone. Avoid introducing unrelated topics or tangents that can distract from the main focus of the conversation.
  1. Get Answers That Are More Than the Sum of Their Parts. Your answers can be seriously improved if you give the AI some ingredients to work with before asking for a response. They could be literal ingredients—suggest a dish from what's left in the fridge—or they could be anything else.
So don't just ask for a murder mystery scenario. Also list out the characters who are going to appear. Don't just ask for ideas of where to go in a city; specify the city you're going to, the types of places you want to see, and the people you'll have with you.
  1. Chained Prompting. Break up complex tasks into several intermediate steps, hoping the AI will generate a more concrete, customized, and better result. This works in a single long prompt as well as in several prompts in a row.
Probably the simplest form of chain prompting is to first ask for the structure of an article. Then you can tell the AI to formulate the corresponding bullet points. This method also saves time: If you notice that the AI is going down a wrong path during the outline, you can make the necessary adjustments before the full text is generated.
After the initial response, you may continue the chat to seek additional details asking for more information “Can you suggest other options?” or “Tell me more about X.”
Write an article about ChatGPT. First give me the outline, which consists of a headline, a teaser, and several subheadings.
[wait for output]
Now write five key messages for each subheading.
[wait for output]
Add five keywords to the key messages for each subheading.
[wait for output]
And so on …
  1. Chain of thought prompting or autodebugging. This is a variation on the chain prompting technique. Instead of splitting a task into smaller steps, in this approach the model response is instructed to proceed step-by-step and present all the steps involved. Doing so reduces the possibility of inaccuracy of outcomes and makes assessing the model response easier.
This type of prompt not only gives the AI context to use for completion, but also provides a “chain of thought” process that showcases how the correct answer to a question should be reached. This type of prompting elicits reasoning. It even improves arithmetical and logic results, something AI language models struggle with sometimes.
Use sentences like “Explain the process step by step”, “Think each step”, "Thinking backwards" or “Cite the reasons behind”.
You are an assistant designed to analyze sentiment from speech data. Users will paste in a string of text and you will respond with an assessment of the response of the speaker. Rate on a scale of 1-10 (10 being highest). Explain why this rating was given.
You will read a paragraph, and then issue queries to a search engine in order to fact-check it. Also explain the queries.
Who was the most decorated (maximum medals) individual athlete in the Olympic games that were held at Sydney? Take a step-by-step approach in your response, cite sources and give reasoning before sharing final answer in the below format: ANSWER is:
Classify and list down their various behaviors and cite the reason behind the classification, using the format BEHAVIOR("reason")
  1. Multi-step prompts. For complex queries, you can use multi-step prompts that break down the question into smaller parts. This helps the AI provide more comprehensive answers.
First, explain supervised learning. Second, describe unsupervised learning. Finally, discuss reinforcement learning and its applications.
  1. Zero-Shot Prompt. The most basic and straightforward prompt type there is. What the AI basically does is complete your prompt. That’s the whole magic. So a zero-shot prompt works like a simple question-answer mechanism. You don’t have to use a question, though. Any initial statement works. The AI model will always try to complete it.
Write a bunch of headlines for a blog post about space travel to Jupiter

Topic:
  1. One-Shot Prompt. These types of prompts provide the AI model with one example of what you expect the output to be. The basic steps are: 1) Give a quick explanation of what you need; 2) add a question-answer pair or a template as an example, and 3) let the AI take it from there.
Translate the following sentences to French. Example: 'The dog is playing in the garden.' -> 'Le chien joue dans le jardin.'
Translate: 'The cat is sitting on the mat.'
  1. Few-shot Prompt. The AI can intuitively generate plausible completions from few examples. The basic steps are: 1) Give a quick explanation of what you need; 2) add a few question-answer pairs or templates as an example.
This fine-tuning achieves better results on various tasks without requiring examples in the prompt, saving costs and enabling lower-latency requests.
Example Training Data:
{"prompt":"", "completion":""}
{"prompt":"", "completion":""}
{"prompt":"", "completion":""}
...
Learn the operator based on the following input/output pairs:
{"prompt":"2+2=", "completion":"22"}
{"prompt":"2+3=", "completion":"23"}
{"prompt":"40+2=", "completion":"402"}
“1000+3000=”

  1. Explore both sides of the conversation. You can use the AI to explore and prepare for a dialogue or an interview.
In the voice of , generate a list of 10 interview questions for about AI and the new Bing.
Answer question 5 in the voice of
Help me prepare for a podcast interview with . The topic we’ve agreed to discuss is the rise of Artificial Intelligence tools and services. Based on her most recent writing and podcasts, give me 10 questions I should anticipate.
  1. Ask for additional details. After the initial response, you may continue the chat to seek additional details. Encourage the AI to ask questions or provide feedback to keep the conversation interactive and engaging. While the AI is able to provide useful and relevant information, it can sometimes be helpful to encourage it to expand on its responses in order to provide more in-depth information or to delve into related topics. You can do this by asking follow-up questions or by providing additional context or examples to help guide the conversation. You might frequently ask for information, such as:
  • “How much do each of those cost?”
  • “Can you create a project calendar for this?”
  • “Can you suggest other options?”
  • Tell me more about X.”

  1. Space efficiency. AI models break words into “tokens”. While common multi-syllable words are often a single token, less common words are broken in syllables. Tokens can sometimes be counter-intuitive, as shown by the example below which demonstrates token boundaries for different date formats. In this case, spelling out the entire month is more space efficient than a fully numeric date. The current range of token support goes from 2000 tokens to up to 32,768 tokens.
tokenization results
Given this limited space, it is important to use it as efficiently as possible.
  • Tables –AI models can understand tabular formatted data quite easily. This can be a space efficient way to include data, rather than preceding every field with name (such as with JSON).
  • White Space – Consecutive whitespaces are treated as separate tokens which can be an easy way to waste space. Spaces preceding a word, on the other hand, are typically treated as part of the same token as the word. Carefully watch your usage of whitespace and don’t use punctuation when a space alone will do.

  1. Prompt self-criticism. The AI is already a useful tool for critiquing texts written by humans – so why shouldn’t this tactic be applicable to texts written by AI?
In line with this idea, the following strategy is divided into two steps: First, the AI should convincingly dissect the text piece by piece. Then, in a second prompt, get the AI to rewrite the text based on those very criticisms.
Critique the following text and convince myself why it is not good. Let’s think about the problems of the text step by step.
[Previous Output.]
Good points. Rewrite the text and improve it based on your critique.
[Output]
  1. Prime the output. This refers to including a few words or phrases at the end of the prompt to obtain a model response that follows the desired form. For example, using a cue such as “Here’s a bulleted list of key points:\n- ” can help make sure the output is formatted as a list of bullet points.
You are an AI assistant that helps people find information. Answer in as few words as possible.
John Smith is married to Lucy Smith. They have five kids, and he works as a software engineer at Microsoft. What search queries should I do to fact-check this? ## One possible search query is:
  1. Add clear syntax. Using clear syntax for your prompt—including punctuation, headings, and section markers—helps communicate intent and often makes outputs easier to parse.
In the following example, separators (--- in this case) have been added between different sources of information or steps. This allows the use of --- as a stopping condition for generation. In addition, section headings or special variables are presented in uppercase to differentiate them.
If you're not sure what syntax to use, consider using Markdown or XML. The models have been trained on a lot of web content in XML and Markdown which may provide better results.

2023.05.30 18:31 Affectionate_Maize80 FSIQ vs Index Score discrepancy

This is sorta kinda estimate my iq post, but really about that in light of what seems to be a flat cognitive profile specifically.
I’ve noticed that some tests treat a full scale iq as an average between non verbal and verbal IQs. These tend to be less comprehensive seemingly. Is there any reason for one over the other?
I’ve also noticed that in other tests, namely those that are comprehensive, (seemingly), the further from the mean index scores tend to be, and the more concentrated they are, the more likely will the fsiq be greater than all of the indexes, or lesser, depending on if they are all above or below 100.
I ask, because I’ve noticed that I consistently score 125-130 on both verbal and non verbal sort of tests. Maybe my working memory and processing speed is 130-135 or a bit higher. This makes me feel like my iq is around 130, but given the well roundedness of my cognitive profile, and assuming I’m correct on all measures, is my full scale likely to be around 140?
JCTI: 126 +/- 5.5 CAIT VSI/PRI: 130 RAPMII: 34/36 (45 minutes, misread. Not 40. Whoops. Figure it’s at least 125-130) G38: 36/38 (139) G36: 28/36 (124) Beta3 Matrices (adjusted norms) : 125 Hagens Matrices: 135 Mensa Norway: 128
MAT: 58/100 (126) CAIT VCI: 132 GREV 2020: 160 (85th percentile for those applying for grad school) Wonderlic V: 36/50 Wonderlic II: 34/50 VI-50: 34/50 16ss (125-130)
IKOK WAIS Arithmetic: 22/22 145 19ss CAIT CPI: 133 (16ss on both minimum, tried again months later with higher scores. Maxed out forward and sequencing on digit span on 2nd attempt months later) IKOK WAIS Sequencing: 135 17ss PI-50: 38/50 130 Numurus Basic: 142
ICAR16: 15/16 (129) ICAR60: 44/60 (124- started rushing after question 30)
As you can see, all my indexes seem to be around 125-130, except for working memory or processing speed which seems to be a 1-2ss higher.
All this considered, is it reasonable to estimate my fsiq as 135-140 despite rarely ever scoring that high, given that my cognitive profile seems flat with a slight cpi tilt?
Thank you
