The Hieromartyr Archpriest Philósophos N. Ornatsky was born on May 21, 1860 in the churchyard of Novaya Yerga, Cherepovets County, Novgorod Governorate, into the family of a village priest. One of his brothers was married to the niece of Saint John of Kronstadt. Philósophos studied first in Kirillov Theological School, and then in the Novgorod Theological Seminary. In 1885 he graduated from the St. Petersburg Theological Academy with the degree of Candidate. In the summer of 1885, Philósophos married Elena Zaozerskaya, the daughter of the former subdeacon of Metropolitan Isidore, and soon he was ordained to the priesthood.
Initially, the young priest served as rector in the church of the orphanage of the Prince of Oldenburg, where he had once taught the Law of God (catechism). From 1892 to 1912, he served as the rector of the church at the Expedition for the Procurement of State Papers. For twenty-six years he was the chairman of the Society for the Dissemination of Religious and Moral Education in the Spirit of the Orthodox Church, successfully counteracting anti-church movements.
In 1893, Father Ornatsky was elected as a member of the St. Petersburg City Duma from the clergy and held this office until 1917. He took part in the establishment of shelters in the city: orphanages and almshouses. Through his efforts in St. Petersburg and the surrounding area, twelve churches were built, the largest of which was the church of the Resurrection of Christ at the Varshavsky railway station. In addition, we should also mention the churches of Saints Peter and Paul in Lesnoy, Saint Sergius of Radonezh on Novosivkovskaya Street, Saint Seraphim of Sarov behind the Narva outpost, the church of the Forerunner on the Vyborg side, Saint Gerasimos church, and Saint Isidore of Yuriev church.
The Saint lived quite modestly, though his was a large family (he had ten children). The whole array of public titles and offices which he held for the glory of God, did not bring in any means of subsistence. As Chairman of the Temple Building Committees, large sums of money passed through his hands, yet he was obliged to give private lessons in order to feed his family.
Father Ornatsky was also the editor and censor of such metropolitan spiritual magazines as "St. Petersburg Spiritual Herald" (published from 1894), "The Christian's Rest" (1901), and "Orthodox-Russian Word" (1902).
Father Philósophos was one of the closest companions of the Hieromartyr Metropolitan Benjamin (Kazansky), of Petrograd and Gdovsk, who, when he was a student of the Theological Academy, was actively engaged in preaching activities in the working neighborhoods of St. Petersburg. Bonds of spiritual friendship also sprang up between him and His Holiness Patriarch Tikhon.
For almost twenty years, Father Philósophos was the spiritual son of Saint John of Kronstadt, who often visited him at home and blessed all his undertakings for the good of the Church. The holy pastor entrusted Father Philósophos with being an intermediary in his correspondence with Saint Theophánēs, the Recluse of Vysha.
In 1913, the Archpriest was appointed to the post of rector of the Kazan Cathedral in St. Petersburg. During the First World War, Father Philósophos gave up his apartment to be used as an infirmary for wounded soldiers, and he and his family moved to a small state-owned room. Repeatedly, he went to the areas of hostilities, accompanying the transports with needed supplies for the soldiers, and trying with all his might to inspire and support the defenders of Russia.
His son Nicholas (born in 1886) was a military doctor who was part of the Ninth Russian Army; another son, Boris (born in 1887), was a staff captain of the 23rd Artillery Brigade, who graduated from the Konstantinov Artillery School, and fought heroically on the Austro-Hungarian front. Father Ornatsky's gift of preaching attracted those who were seeking the words of life, and he repeatedly urged his flock not to accept the corrupting ideas of Bolshevism. Knowing that Orthodoxy is at the heart of Russian life, Batiushka urged the intelligentsia to realize this. He never tired of repeating: "Our intellectuals have to become Russian."
During the Revolution, he saw his wife's sister's husband, Peter Skipetrov (+ January 20) shot before his eyes. At the funeral service, Father Philósophos gave a sermon, fearlessly denouncing the Bolsheviks. He repeatedly called upon his flock to surround the churches and to protect the shrines of their land. In January 1918, when Father Peter Skipetrov was killed at the Lavra, Father Philósophos organized a defense of the shrines of Saint Alexander Nevsky Lavra, organizing Cross Processions to it from all the churches of the capital.
On August 9, 1918, he was arrested, along with his two eldest sons, Nicholas and Boris. At the time of his arrest he was absolutely impassive and calm. Parishioners gathered by the thousands and walked along Nevsky Prospekt, demanding the release of their shepherd. The Chekists received the delegation of believers, promising to do what they asked. But on the same night (July 20, 1918), Father Philósophos was transported to prison in the city of Kronstadt. Around October 30, 1918, thirty-two men were brought from different prisons, all officers of the Imperial Army, who were being taken to be shot. Some were young, and others were older. One said he was a Colonel of the Guards. He told their escorts, "You will all perish, perhaps in twenty years, but you will perish like dogs. Russia will be Russia again, but you will perish." Their escorts said nothing. As they were being led to the place of execution, Father Philósophos read aloud the prayer for the departure of the soul over his two sons and the rest of the convicts.
Some say the place of execution was in Kronstadt, while others say it was not far from the Gulf of Finland, between Ligovo and Oranienbaum. The bodies of those who were shot were dumped into the bay. Father Ornatsky's body did not sink, but was tossed onto the shore by the waves near Oranienbaum. There it was buried secretly by the inhabitants.
These Saints were canonized as New Martyrs and Confessors of Russia at the Jubilee Bishops' Council of the Russian Orthodox Church in August 2000 for general Church veneration.
Saint Philósophos is also commemorated on July 20, and on the Third Sunday after Pentecost (Movable Feast: Synaxis of the Saints of St. Petersburg.

sorry for the auto focus but does anyone know what might be the cause of this? It happens off and on almost every time there’s a thunderstorm or some form of intense rain/wind. I haven’t had any power issues since it started but that doesn’t mean i’m not still concerned about the electronics that I own. I’m not quite sure who to call or report to about such a thing because it’s technically not a power outage issue and it only happens during certain weather events. lmk if anyone has any ideas because i haven’t been able to find anything helpful online, at least for my situation.

2023.05.31 19:20 arenaskies Thinking about selling home in St Pete FL

Tell me this is a crazy idea or not. I have discussed this with a friend who's a Realtor too and he thinks it's not a bad idea. I'm debating on selling the house we currently own in St. Petersburg, FL and taking the money, putting it in treasuries, and having that income cover our future rent. The market here, especially in St. Pete, is still crazy. We bought our house in 2011. We've almost paid off our mortgage already. We have less than 50k left in our mortgage, and we can sell our house for up to 750k. 5% in treasuries would yield roughly 30-35k a year. We've also always wanted to live right in downtown St. Pete, so we'd be able to afford it now.
The reason we want to sell is in case the market does eventually drop, we would have the opportunity to buy a bigger house in this area. Our house is on the smaller side, and with kids it's getting a bit tight so we'd love to buy something bigger. But anything bigger than our house in the neighborhoods we like is over a million dollars currently.
I'm nervous because... what if in three years the market is STILL high? What if the house we sell ends up being worth a million dollars and then we're really stuck renting indefinitely? I feel like St. Pete is in higher demand than other areas too. I'm thinking worst case scenario.
I guess my question also is... do you think we're close to some sort of bubble or not? Just want to hear some opinions. Thanks.

Ever since the “I dream in phosphorescence” line, I’ve picked up on a bunch of possible phosphorus ties in ST lyrics. This is likely just overzealous pattern recognition but I thought some of you might find it interesting.
The basics, for starters: Phosphorescence is a form of photoluminescence that makes an object absorb and then emit light. The general lyric interpretation there is just “i dream of things glowing”, but it can be analyzed further.
Phosphorescence occurs when a substance absorbs a shorter wavelength of light and remits it as a longer wavelength (reminder that on the visible spectrum, violet is the shortest and red is the longest- “I look for scarlet and you look for ultraviolet”). There are two mechanisms of phosphorescence: Triplet- atom becomes trapped in a form of quantum spin Persistent- The absorbing material has a structural defect that the light becomes “trapped” in (for example, a vacancy defect- an empty space where an atom should be). Both of these could be used as metaphors to describe the patterns of pain in ST lyrics.
Phosphorescence is named after phosphorus (even though few phosphorescent materials actually contain it).
There are 4 phosphorus allotropes- white phosphorus (the vapor of which destroys jaw bone, can be used as a weapon), black, red phosphorus (can be formed by exposing white phosphorous to sunlight), and violet (formed from heating red phosphorous in a vacuum). “Choke myself on sacred vapor”, Jaws, various weapon references, recurring night/sun links, “the vacuum I am”, scarlet vs. ultraviolet
I think the frequent use of “entanglement/tanlged” etc is interesting in the context of the memory/Alzheimer’s references. One of the causes behind Alzheimer’s and some other neurodegenerative conditions is that tau proteins within neurons are altered, then build up and cause neurofibrillary tangles.
The process by which tau proteins are altered is hyperphosphorylation, which put simply means that a bunch of phosphates are attached to it. The wikipedia page for hyperphosphorylation specifically uses the phrase “fully saturated”, which I find funny- “darling won’t you saturate”.
Like I said, probably all coincidental- but with ST you really never know

A year after building a truck bed kitchen drawer for my overlanding rig I've thought of so many ways it could be improved on. This week I decided it's time to start some work on it.. This time around I decided to use my 3D printing skills to model the whole thing out in SketchUp. So far it really helped me wrap my head around the project, make sure all my measurements are accurate, and it helps math-out how much material I need.
I learned a lot from doing this, the biggest one is the benefit of solving problems before starting to cut any wood. Also learned how to utilize components to save time in the software, applying textures to make things look "more real", and overall how to design something life-size instead of a little 3D printed objects. Now that I have proper plans, I'm hoping to rip boards and build this much faster than last time.
This all got me thinking, does anyone here use CAD software to design projects? Do you draw out sketches? Or do you just go for it?!

When two children in Florida called the cops on Halloween of 1969 about a suspicious black trunk they'd seen unknown men disposing of in an empty lot, the St. Petersburg police had no idea they were about to encounter one of their most difficult cold cases. Upon opening the trunk, the police discovered a recently deceased woman's remains covered in plastic and masking tape. A towel was wrapped around her head, covered in blood. She appeared to be dressed for bed, wearing a green nightgown and hair curlers pinned into place. Medical examiners determined that the woman was likely in her mid-twenties to mid-thirties and likely died as a result of strangulation with a bolo tie in addition to blunt force trauma to her skull. Jane Doe was likely intoxicated at the time of her death and showed no defensive wounds, leading investigators to suspect that her killer was someone known to her. Upon releasing her description to the press, the St. Petersburg police department received hundreds of leads and tips from those who thought they may have known her. The trunk she was found in was delivered to the FBI, though law enforcement declined to release the results of their forensic testing.
None of these leads panned out, and eventually, investigators releaseda sketch of the woman and her dental records, describing her unique upper partial denture plate. Despite many leads, the case went cold, and without knowing who Jane Doe was, they had no way to find her killer. With the advent of DNA nearly thirty years later, a DNA profile for her was loaded onto CODIS, the national DNA database for the United States, with no matches from her relatives. Finally, in 2022, seeing the success of other jurisdictions with genetic genealogy, law enforcement decided that Jane Doe would be a good candidate for the testing.
Much to their delight, genetic genealogy helped pinpoint a likely identification for the unknown woman found in Florida: Sylvia June Atherton, a forty-one-year-old mother of five from Tucson, Arizona, who disappeared with her young daughters in 1969 after leaving with her husband. A surviving daughter of hers, Syllen, noted that the last time she saw her mother was when her mother and stepfather dropped her off at her biological father's home in Chicago. Her husband, who died in 1999, never reported Sylvia missing and it is currently unknown what happened to her daughters.
