2023.04.01 08:45 OmniGokuBlack Is Florida worth moving too?
Now I was born and raised in Texas I've been different places across the US I lived and went to school in Reno Nevada for a few years and also lived in San Diego very briefly I'm currently staying with family here back in Texas to save up money I'm going to be moving somewhere else soon with my girlfriends and Florida is on my radar specifically southern and central Florida.I Love the beach and I heard the water there is actually barrable unlike the cold waters on the west coast.I also love riding motorcycles and the weather there I feel is very ideal for riding most of the year. One of my concerns is that I've heard mixed things about Florida apparently being racist I'm a black man and the things I've heard make me want to reconsider. For those of you who have been there most of your life what is your experience is it racist there? I should also mention that I'm in a relationship with my 2 girlfriends that would be moving there with me one of them is trans and I've also heard that it can be very close minded there. All in all do you think living in Florida is worth it? Are there any problems there I should know about?

2023.04.01 08:27 WindChillWarning Highschooler looking for opportunities in tech and meteorology
Hi everyone, first post here! I'm a junior at a bay area high school looking for opportunities to put on my college application. I'm specifically interested in storm prediction and modeling. I really like things like RadarOmega (the thing ryan hall uses) and would love to study CS and use it to make more accurate weather models. I'm just curious if anyone has any ideas for extracurriculars in this space that I could do, preferably virtually. Or, simply ways I could get involved in storm response through volunteering or outreach. Thank you all and stay safe out there! It's been wild recently.

2023.04.01 02:48 Lolito666 STAY SAFE EVERYONE this system of storms looks very serious
2023.03.31 22:29 BronzeWallMedallion New to the area? A severe weather explainer.
We get so many “I’m moving to Peoria” posts, and so many folks are non-midwesterners originally, so you probably didn’t have tornado drills in school.
So!
Tornado Watch: This is the low alert. The forecast for the day shows that tornado-producing storms are possible. Stay vigilant.
Tornado Warning: A tornado is nearby or imminent. Does not necessarily mean a tornado is on the ground, but at the very least there are radar-indications. Take cover, because situations change fast.
If you hear the sirens outside, a Tornado Warning has been declared. They don’t sound for the whole time, so the danger is not over when they stop. Turn on the radio or go to the weather bureau website to see when the warning ends.
If you have a basement, go there. If you don’t, get into a windowless room in the middle of your house.
The overwhelming odds are that you’ll not get a directly hit by a tornado, but severe storms still generate widespread winds and hail, so trees can blow over or loose debris can blow out a window. Look at tornado damage pictures to see what’s possible,so it’s better to play it safe than blow it off.

2023.03.31 19:19 TheMrBoot Useful links for the storms today
EDIT: For anyone who pops in, looks like stuff is starting to move into the area over the next couple hours.
EDIT 2 (3:52): Confirmed tornado in a storm northeast of Ottumwa. Currently heading towards Iowa City, so over the next hour, and while it's very unlikely the tornado portion of that storm would persist that long, the storm itself could still be pretty gross by the time it gets there.
EDI 3: Worst of it should be past us now. Hope everyone is safe and didn't get too much damage for the areas impacted by the tornadoes this afternoon.
Seemed like some people in the other post about the storms today were stressed out about them or were annoyed with commercial weather companies driving clickbait and hype, so I thought I'd try to put together some useful links for people to keep tabs on things.
National Weather Service Forecasts General weather information funded by your tax dollars, free of clickbait and ads.
Storm Prediction Center Convective Outlook/Today's Outlook The forecasts posted here will give you info on what kinds of severe weather are possible (emphasis on possible), as well as include blurbs below the maps with info on how things are expected to play out at the time of the forecast. They get updated a couple of times a day.
IEMBot Twitter/Monitor Will keep you posted on the info the national weather service is working on, including updates on watches/warnings/risk probabilities.
KCRG First Alert Weather Twitter While this is obviously not a government service, KCRG does a good job relaying storm prediction info, including watches and warnings. There was a warning a year or two ago where I got the alert via their twitter before either the NWS weather or the sirens going off.
NWS Storm Preparation Recommendations This site has some info on things you can do to prepare ahead of time for the possibility of severe weather. Having a plan in place in advance (for where you will go to take shelter, what supplies you might need while there, such as flashlights/water, etc) will make a potentially stressful situation much less taxing. If you keep an eye on what's going on throughout the day, you'll give yourself more time to get to your shelter spot in the rare chance you'll need to. The site also has some information on the differences between watches and warnings, for anyone who may not be as familiar with the terms.
MyRadaRadarscope These are my go-to weather radar apps. They're good at different things, but will also give you a heads up of severe weather in the forecast so you can start keeping abreast of things.
I'm sure there are plenty of other resources out there that would be beneficial to folks, but I thought I'd at least share my go-tos and hopefully reduce some of the stress for people who may be feeling anxious about this afternoon.

2023.03.31 15:43 yeeterusftw A tale of what can happen when a VA man teams up with r/Boston
NOTE: I am NOT OP. Original post from
boston by
u/bostonshopper. I'm just a longtime lurker on both this and
boston.
Editor's note: Most US states have a Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) that is tasked with all things related to car registration and driver's licenses. Massachusetts calls it a Registry of Motor Vehicles, or RMV. You'll see that throughout this post.
First post (Feb 23, 2023):
I visit friends in Boston for a month once a year, but I don't live in MA. The RMV is saying I have to register my car in MA and get a second set of license plates... are they right? After visiting friends in Boston for almost a month last year, I received a notice from the RMV that I was required to register my car in MA.
I assume I got on RMV's radar because I got two unrelated parking tickets in Boston, roughly 20 days apart :(
Since I don't live in MA, own or rent a home in MA, vote in MA, claim anything from MA on my taxes, or do anything else in MA... I figured this would be easily resolved at my RMV "virtual hearing" today.
Instead, the woman from the RMV Enforcement Unit who called me was adamant that I need to "dual-register" my vehicle in MA as well as my home state, get a second set of license plates, update my insurance, etc. And if I don't register my car, they'll revoke my right to drive in MA, likely triggering my license getting suspended in my home state. My assumption was that because I spend 90%+ of my time in my home state, I'm not an MA resident, and thus I don't need to register here. Am I missing something?
Apparently I have to pay a non-refundable $50 to appeal to request a reversal by the Board of Appeal... seems bonkers.
OOP gets a lot of comments about how this is bonkers but they point out that: I hadn't either. Apparently it does exist.
Second post (March 21, 2023):
Update: After visiting Boston in October, the RMV is giving me until Friday to register my car in MA, or I'll lose my driver's license. The only catch? I don't live, work, or have an address in MA... so I can't get insured or register here. And the RMV won't call me back. Anyone got a contact? OP posts a screenshot of an email that the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) sent him and then provides the following update via comment: Update: Damn thank you Reddit! Got so many suggestions, email addresses to contact, and even multiple tv stations reached out. I'm hoping this post, the attention, and the emails will be enough to get a supervisor at the Enforcement Services Unit to just take a 30-second look at my case and realize that there's been a mistake. Either way, I'll post an update on Friday once I know what happened...
As discussed in
my post last month, I visited Boston for a month last October. While I was visiting, a nosy neighbor called the tipline to (incorrectly) report that my vehicle belonged to an MA resident who was failing to register their car.
The RMV sent me a letter informing me that they believed I was required to register my vehicle in MA, but I had the opportunity to submit documents proving my residency in another state. I submitted several documents demonstrating that I'm a VA resident, was only a visitor in MA, and have liability insurance that meets MA standards. They assigned me a telephone "hearing" date.
When the RMV employee called me for my "hearing", it didn't go very well. I tried to explain that I'm not an MA resident, don't live or work in MA, and was just visiting. This person was absolutely not interested in hearing what I had to say. When I tried to explain, they literally said "you can do this the easy way or the hard way" 👀
The ruling was that I need to register my vehicle. If I don't comply, MA would revoke my right to drive in the state and report to my home state of Virginia, which would then pull my license. I confirmed with the Virginia DMV that if MA revokes my right to drive, VA will suspend my license.
I submitted an appeal, but it takes them 3 weeks to even acknowledge receipt of the appeal, and then several more weeks to schedule an in-person hearing. The hearing would happen long after my license has already been suspended.
I looked into registering in MA, and discovered that it's impossible. Only MA residents with MA insurance can register vehicles in MA, and my insurance company confirmed that they are only able to provide insurance to residents.
Despite dozens of calls and emails, and hours on hold with the RMV, the supervisor who could resolve this refuses to call me back. So I'm stuck in a Catch-22 of epic proportions: if I don't register my car by Friday, I'll lose my license, but it's impossible for me to register my car.
So I'm hoping someone on Reddit can help me! With a contact at the RMV, or the DOT, or anyone else in the government who could take 30 seconds to look at my case and see that it's obviously ridiculous. I'd really like to keep my license...
At this point, OOP gets comments with more emails and advice. Some news stations also reach out. And lo and behold it shows up in the local news here.
Third post (March 23, 2023):
Sorry for the million posts! The RMV has postponed my license suspension for 60 days while they "investigate." Thanks u/SchminksMcGee for suggesting contacting the local news, it's working! And they're digging into the craziness of anyone who drives in MA for 30 days being required to dual-register. OOP posts link to an NBC Boston article and provides the following update via comment Hoping this will be my last update, and they'll just quietly drop the suspension in a week or two. Thanks so much to all of you who PM'd ideas, or gave me an email address of someone who could maybe help, or just said "damn that sucks."
I will definitely be much more careful with what I write and say to bureaucracies in the future. I do think this particular bizarre situation was hard to see coming, but volunteering the information that I was visiting the area for a specific amount of time turned out to be a big mistake.
And naively, I do hope the pressure from the news coverage ends up improving things for people interacting with the RMV in general. To just give one example,
u/isenfire literally had to sell their car to resolve an issue they had with the RMV, that shouldn't happen to anyone. Whatever oversight or funding or reform the RMV needs to do its job in a more fair and humane way, and if there's a part of the state law that could be fixed, would be great if at least some of that could end up happening.
*** NEW UPDATE ***

2023.03.31 14:55 Healthy_Apartment136 Thought of something pretty cool. Since weather should come onto the sim soon, why not make the weather in some series like it is irl at the track rn? More below
Imagine this: You're in an endurance race and it looks like it's gonna start raining soon. So, you head to a weather radar on the internet and look how the weather gets in the next couple minutes. I think they should implement this to at least a few series, would be really cool.
Or, you live near a racetrack, see how it gets starts raining outside and a minute later or so it starts raining in the sim. That would be great. Let me hear your thoughts on it!
