2023.03.30 06:47 furbysaysburnthings News at 8: Left house without phone, didn't implode

I've been frustrated because work made me uninstall Cold Turkey blocker from my work laptop which I have for a work from home job. Ever since I uninstalled it, I've been online nonstop again. Just like that, right back to full addiction.
But I've been reducing my non-work screen use over the past year down from like 8+ hours a day to closer to 2.5 hours a day which is still more than ideal, but huge, huge progress nevertheless.
So for the hell of it I decided while leaving my house for laundry today to leave my phone at home. I know the route, it's not like I'll get lost.
I thought it'd simply be a less distracted drive, but to my utter surprise, my whole outlook on the city changed. I was SO present, it was shocking to realize how spaced out, how dissociated, and oblivious I usually am. Even when I'm just using GPS on my phone, or if I simply have it in my pocket, my mind is always thinking about looking at something on my phone or interacting with it. I'm ashamed to admit I'm constantly fiddling with my phone while driving.
It was just so surprising how vastly different and calmer the world felt without the mere presence of a screen in my pocket. I'm intentional about NOT checking my phone in public, yet somehow it felt experientially different to not in essence have my phone as a social anxiety pacifier at the ready in my pocket. And it felt really good. It felt quiet. I noticed that my mind got quieter too.

2023.03.30 06:47 linguistics_throwawa Wenzhou dialect speakers (温州话)

I am currently researching the language spoken in the city of Wenzhou, China. This is often dismissed as a dialect, but in fact has low levels of mutual intelligibility with Mandarin Chinese as well as the surrounding Wu languages.
I am interested in collecting phonetic as well as sociolinguistic data. The problem I am facing is that it is very difficult to find native speakers in Australia. Due to dialect levelling, many of the younger people from Wenzhou speak a variety much closer to Mandarin. In order to find older speakers I am thinking of contacting Chinese churches (Wenzhou is more religious than other areas in China) and looking at Chinatowns (Wenzhounese people are known for being very entrepreneurial and moving overseas to start businesses). I am able to compensate my informants.
Any advice on how to find Wenzhounese informants would be very helpful. This could be advice on specific people or organisations to contact, advice on cultural sensitivities relating to compentation, or anything else that may be relevant.
Thanks in advance!

2023.03.30 06:46 DHSDirector ChatGPT Poem “Kings Playoff Drought Ends”

As the Kings prepare to take the court, Their hearts beat with anticipation, For they know they carry the hopes and dreams, Of a city longing for celebration.
So they gather in the locker room, Their heads bowed in silent prayer, And as they rise to face the challenge, A fire ignites that they cannot bear.
They step onto the hardwood stage, Their eyes fixed on the gleaming beam, And they know that with every moment, They must play as if in a dream.
For the weight of expectations is heavy, And the pressure to succeed immense, But they take it all in stride, For they know they have the strength and sense.
And with every jump shot, every steal, Every pass, every rebound, They light the beam that shines so bright, And they feel their spirits unbound.
For they are the Kings of Sacramento, And they play with pride and grace, And they will never stop fighting, Till they reach the championship race.
So let the world bear witness, To this team's shining beam, For the Sacramento Kings have risen, And they are living out their dream.

2023.03.30 06:46 Investinginstonks C Train Safety

I’m a young female who depends on the C Train to get to/from work. I have found it to be so brutal lately that I am considering quitting my job over my commute. The station I get off at is always full of sketchy people shooting up drugs, puddles of urine, and people fighting. No police in sight. Rent has gone up so much, so driving isn’t in the budget. Anyone else starting to feel stuck in this city over safety???

2023.03.30 06:45 ChocolatePresent I have separation anxiety with my guns

I’m 19 and I currently own 9 guns, most where given to me by family but a few I bought myself. I’ve always enjoyed shooting and working on guns so I’ve always had them around. I’ve never had any problems with having my guns around because I live in the country I keep most of them in my closet but my friends have convinced me to move into a big city and get an apartment with them. which is good idea their are more job opportunities their and I desperately need a new job but the apartments we plan to live at are student living for the local college and don’t allow firearms on the property. I’m having a hard time imagining not having guns around their part of my day to day life at this point my friend say I would never need a gun in a big city which is mostly true but when the day comes I do need a gun I fear I won’t have one. How should I go about this situation should I try to rent a storage room and keep my guns their, keep a few ones in my truck, or just give them up and leave them with my parents.

2023.03.30 06:45 scoobert_____doobert subluxing or just crepitus?

hi y’all, so i’ve been suspecting lately that i might have relatively mild hypermobile ehlers danlos or just have some hypermobile joints (whatever the difference is idrk). i have chronic pain that has gotten significantly worse in the last year, and though i have never dislocated a joint, i wonder if i have subluxed joints before, some maybe even constantly. i suspect minor subluxing in my knees and maybe shoulders, but primarily, my wrists.
i have bad crepitus in my knees, that i know is just crepitus because there is rarely pain and it’s a sharp pop mostly just when i move from standing to sitting. (though sometimes they feel “off” which some here have described as a sublimation). my wrists pop constantly too and feel generally unstable, but in my left wrist especially, it feels like more than popping or crepitus. my right wrist often pops at the joint, like the center of my wrist, but i would say with probably 50% of movements in my left wrist, there is a dull popping that i can actually see if i look at the area (pinky side). i can induce this popping and it is not painful though it does feel weird and unstable. could this be mild subluxation? i imagine subluxing wrists are common because of the multiple bones and the intended motion of the joint, but idk if what’s happening with my wrists is normal. i’m worried that it will cause big problems down the line. anybody else experience this?
i feel like i can tell the difference between popping, cracking, and creaking in my joints and most people look at me crazy when i stress the difference. my joints will crack or pop if there is injured tissue in the area, but the potential subluxing feels more like a dull, low frequency, smooth pop. different from a cracking hip or a popping vertebrae.

2023.03.30 06:43 CiHoYin How to correctly select the input and output capacitors for developing a new wireless charging solution

With the advancement of technology, the functions and performance of mobile phones are getting better and better. In order to stabilize battery life, the battery is also designed to be larger and larger. In order to improve battery life, some manufacturers have adopted a dual battery design, but it still cannot solve the problem of battery life and portability. When the capacity cannot be increased, mobile phone manufacturers began to shift their targets to wired fast charging. When the rapid development of wired fast charging, some manufacturers began to develop convenient and beautiful mobile phones based on the requirements of some users. Wireless fast charging will eventually form a new wireless charging industry cluster, which will make it easier for people to travel and replenish electricity, while reducing the use of a large number of wiring harnesses, and helping green travel and carbon-neutral development concepts.
The 2022 Qatar World Cup set off a wave of football fever. The wonderful game has become the spiritual companion of many "night shift workers". When they watch the World Cup, radio technology has quietly entered their sights. Because the official World Cup ball "Journey" Al Rihla is powered by a small battery and charged by wireless charging, in order to obtain better design, sealing and stability. The wireless charging device provides a strong power guarantee for the official ball of the World Cup.
The development and trend of wireless charging
The wireless charging technology was installed on the mobile phone PALM for the first time in 2009, and it has amazed the world, but its subsequent development has been unknown, just like a dream in the world, it is only a flash in the pan in the eyes of the world. The time came to 2017. At the Apple Autumn New Product Launch Conference, it was announced for the first time that the entire series of the new iPhone 8 will use wireless charging technology. Wireless charging technology has begun to emerge in the field of mobile phones, driving the development and application of vehicle wireless charging, smart home, robots, drones and other fields.
Now cities are developing towards a "fast" pace of life. People are pursuing higher time management, and the utilization rate of trivial time is constantly increasing, which has led to a change in the direction of wireless charging devices to smaller and more efficient. In line with the tide of the times, leading wireless charging companies have developed the next generation of wireless charging with higher power, longer distance, and higher efficiency to meet consumer needs and improve consumer user experience.
Hard-Core Capacitor Requirements for Wireless Charging
The advantages of wireless charging determine the high requirements for capacitors. First, wireless charging has no wire winding, which is simple and beautiful. Capacitors with smaller volume and thinner thickness are required; secondly, referring to the characteristics of dexterity, portability and complex working environment, capacitors are required to have ultra-high-power hard-core properties while being small in size; thirdly, in technology research and development, capacitors Performance is the "throat" that restricts the further development of wireless charging.
At present, the commonly used capacitors for wireless charging equipment supporting the iPhone are chip multilayer ceramic capacitors, but they cannot break through the bottleneck of "smaller volume and thinner thickness". Due to the defect of the wireless charging effect, it cannot adapt to the new and high requirements of the wireless charging technology solution.
Therefore, YMIN capacitors are researching in the direction of ultra-thin capacitors with higher power, and develop "new capacitors" with better adaptability to wireless charging solutions. After unremitting efforts, YMIN finally developed a solid-state laminated aluminum electrolytic capacitor that meets the above requirements. Capacitors and polymer solid chip capacitors with small size, large energy, and high characteristic stability. Considering that some special and smaller wireless charging solutions require finer capacitors, smaller A-shell and B-shell polymer tantalum capacitors were developed.

2023.03.30 06:43 skeeternutfree Hydroquinone experiences?

My derm just prescribed me 6% hydroquinone + 0.0125% tretinoin + 0.1% dexamethasone for melasma. I’m supposed to use it for 2 months then take a break and just use tretinoin for a month, and then repeat if needed. I’m mid 30s,white, pale w/ freckles and my melasma is the “mask of pregnancy” thing that just never went away. Curious if anyone has used this prescription or similar and what their experiences were. Looking for any pro tips or warning. My doc was blasé about prescribing it (except she really emphasized the importance of sun protection) but I’m a little apprehensive about hydroquinone (not sure why exactly) and don’t hear it mentioned much in this sub.

2023.03.30 06:43 Rhetorical_Abe Veteran Tips

I see plenty of people posting on here asking for recommendations, so as a 4th time attendee this year, I will share what I have learned.
First: shade. One canopy is great. 2 is supremely better. A beach tent is a great second canopy. The second canopy is for your tent. The difference provided by that shade will separate you from the rested and the devastated.
While we’re talking about keeping cool, you don’t know heat brother. You’ve been on the beach in 90 degree heat before. You were fine. Well, ‘yer on the farm now city boi. And in the south we got a thing called humidity. So bring the following to also help you keep cool.
Rechargeable battery fans. And when I say fan, you need the blade diameter to be no less than 6-8”, bigger is even better but bigger means they take more power. More on that later. Get 2 at least maybe 3. With three you can create a nice little cyclone and keep the air moving. The fans that recharge through usb cables are ideal. Because they’ll be easier to recharge.
Frog toggs. They’re chamois that soak up cold water and you can drape them on your neck or over your head to keep cool. Put them in your cooler water to get them nice and cold.
A 5 gal bucket. You can also drain your cooler water daily into this bucket. It will stay surprisingly cool for a long time. This bucket you can use for a very soothing and very cooling foot bath at camp. You can also use this to wash your feet before you enter beneath your canopy. Clean camp is a happy camp.
Space blankets. You can clip these to the top of your canopy and help bounce even more heat off your camp. Make sure you also bring plenty of clamps/ binder clips/ zip ties to secure them and..
Tapestries. You want 3 at least and you want them to be tall enough to go to the ground from the side of your canopy, and wide enough to span side to side. Gives you privacy and a nice little wind tunnel.
Solar battery generator. We live in the future and it’s glorious. These things are expensive but worth every penny. Even getting a smaller cheaper version will prove immensely useful to recharge your phone and fans out there. You may even be able to run some led string lights with them at your camp for ambiance and light. Lock it in your car during the day or hidden in your bins or tent. Recharge and run your fans at the same time while your battery is charging in the beautiful sun. An alternative are those car charger adapters that have like 2 USB ports and a regular plug. It can be nice to take refuse in your car and enjoy the AC but be mindful of your neighbors. You may be blowing exhaust and heat right on them.
Tent locks. This is a controversial topic on this subreddit. But what most people overlook is the notion that not every thief is a pro or fully motivated. Some fucked up idiot who stumbles through your camp who could have been deterred easily could get into your tent now. Any measure is better than no measure. But do keep high dollar valuables locked in your car. You may consider keeping smaller items and electronics in plastic bags in a second cooler. Your car will get HOT.
Bring a good cooler and expect to buy ice at least once per day. go FIRST thing in the morning for ice and to shit before there is a line. Also don’t bring food to cook. Cooking at camp is rookie shit. Take burgers. Sounds easy. We’ll think about it. Produce won’t keep. Cheese won’t keep. Meat won’t keep. Condiments won’t keep. No don’t cook. Budget for food and if you do bring food bring snacks and simple meals like pb and j or oatmeal. My personal recommendation are those MREs and First Strike Bars.
Solar shower. The shower line is for chumps. And you don’t need a shower booth. Just bring a swimsuit and bathe in that with help from your friends. One stands on the cooler or a bucket and holds it and you get a better, warmer, wait free shower each day. They’re also exceedingly cheap. The med size is all you need.
Personal folding fan/ Battery misting fan. Misting fans are great for in the crowd. Those little neck fans are nice but be sure to bring enough batteries to change them everyday. Otherwise you’ll barely feel them.
A canteen/ water bottle/ camel pack. Hydration is the name of the game. Everyone here says it all the time, and they’re all right. Drink lots of water. Also bring Water Boy or Liquid IV to boost your hydration.
You don’t have to do drugs to have fun. It’s a great place and a great time all it’s own. If you are doing drugs, only do the drugs you brought with you. Don’t buy drugs. And if anyone offers you drugs, bring a test kit to make sure they are safe. If for nothing else your peace of mind that you know exactly what you’re on.
I’m sure I could think of more but I thought this could help some newbies out there. You don’t have to have everything I said. I built up to this young padowans. You will want to come back so get what you need and you will be better prepared next time. You will have a great time. See y’all on the farm.

2023.03.30 06:43 shine-dream-smile Has anyone had experience with a slow growing (even without any treatment) Glioblastoma?

Hello, I am hoping for some insight and to see if anyone has had a similar experience (hopefully not of being misdiagnosed/neglected but of a slow-growing GBM.)
In July 2022, my mom began noticing some issues with her speech and soon began having partial seizures. In her left frontoparietal region, there was a 2.4 cm (at it's widest) "abnormality" found on her scans that was diagnosed as a stroke. Everything else about the brain appeared completely normal. Differential diagnosis said "possible low-grade neoplasm," but this was never considered, even as her partial seizures became more frequent (up to 30 a day, almost every day) over the next 6 months. Last month, her seizures stopped, but she began having difficulties using her right hand. She reported this, and her neurologist did nothing but tweak her seizure medications. Then this month, she lost complete control of her hand, so another MRI was finally done on March 10th, revealing a ring-enhancing tumor measuring up to 3.7 cm, central necrosis, edema, some mass effect, and slight midline shift (4.5 mm).
She had a gross total resection where no visible tumor was left behind on March 20th. The only pathology information we received on it is ATRX positive; GFAP positive; IDH1 negative; Ki67 variable, up to 50%; OLIG2 positive; and P53 wild-type. I know what some of these things mean, but no idea on ATRX, OLIG2, and P53 wild-type. (Does anyone have any info please?) MGMT status has been ordered but is not back yet (I am trying not to overthink how important this result will be).
I keep hearing how aggressive GBM is, but I am trying to wrap my head around how my mother was completely neglected as this thing had complete freedom to grow for 8 months, yet it only grew 1.3 cm in that time. Has anyone experienced this before? I am also wondering about the "possible low-grade neoplasm" statement from her initial scans, though she does not have the IDH1 mutation unfortunately. Something else is that the report says her tumor samples are "most consistent with Glioblastoma" instead of just saying that it is Glioblastoma, but I am not sure if that is just standard phrasing.
My mom is currently busy being a total rockstar at her in-patient rehab facility, so she gets to leave a week early to begin out-patient therapy. She had hardly any control of her right leg after surgery and could not put any weight on it and can now walk up and down stairs on her own. Her right arm was not moveable whatsoever and was even numb and cold, and normal sensation has returned and she can now move everything but her individual fingers (still working on it). Her speech is still the most affected, but she is extremely alert and able to hold a normal conversation. It just takes longer to get the words out (the tumor was right in between her speech center and motor cortex.)
We will soon be going to MD Anderson to begin her treatment, and MD Anderson stated themselves that they want more testing done on the tumor to find out more about my mom's specific case. I have run the gamut of every possible emotion, but ultimately, I am so proud of my mom's strength and am trying to be similarly strong, like she has always taught me to be. I would appreciate any insight and similar experiences so much. Thank you.

2023.03.30 06:43 Thankkratom Extremely unbased section in China’s Report on Human Rights Violations in the United States in 2022

I read the entire thing, and damn this part was bad. The rest of it was almost perfect… but this is decoupled from material reality. It ignores that the US people agree and ask for legalization. It also ignores that China itself didn’t ban cannabis until the 1985 when the UN and US asked them to. They totally mischaracterize the drug problem in the US. Alcohol use has increased and goes ignored, despite its real health problems. I have a lot more to say about it but reading their whole report was enough phone time for me.
Here’s the section, thought y’all would agree it’s bad.
The U.S. government actively promotes the legalization of marijuana regardless of people's health. Marijuana is a controlled narcotic drug by the UN International Drug Control Conventions. In the 1970s, the United States promulgated the Controlled Substances Act (CSA), which classified marijuana as a federally controlled substance. The federal and state governments of the United States have failed to regulate drugs and substance abuse and even pushed for the legalization of marijuana under the influence of lobbyists groups, resulting in more and more young people becoming victims. In their book Can Legal Weed Win? The Blunt Realities of Cannabis Economics published in 2022, Robin Goldstein and Daniel Sumner, researchers with the University of California, Davis, underlined that one of the pipe dreams behind the legalization push is the intention to make legal cannabis a new cash cow for the government through tax. Marijuana sales in the United States have exceeded 30 billion dollars so far, and the U.S. marijuana market is expected to reach 65 billion dollars by 2030. According to the data released by Open Secrets, from 2018 to 2021, some marijuana and products-related enterprises and trade associations in the United States spent more than 16.6 million dollars on political lobbying, with an average annual expenditure of about 10 times that of 2016; In the first three quarters of 2022, more than 5.6 million dollars were spent on marijuana lobbying. Enterprises and organizations profiting from marijuana trade money for power, and form interest groups with politicians, thereby letting drugs and substance abuse going unchecked, a striking demonstration of Washington's failure in social governance.
Drugs and substance abuse endanger life and health. According to a survey released by U.S. Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, 59.3 million Americans over 12 years of age abused drugs in 2020, of which 49.6 million smoked marijuana. According to public information on the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), nearly 40 percent of American high school students use marijuana for a long time. According to a report released by the U.S. National Institutes of Health in August 2022, 43 percent of young Americans have smoked marijuana in a year, 8 percent have used hallucinogens, and 11 percent have smoked marijuana every day, the highest level in record. According to a study released by the Manhattan Institute for Policy Studies on August 4, 2022, the number of Americans dying from drugs and drug abuse has increased dramatically in recent years, by more than 100,000 per year. More than 107,000 cases involving deaths from drug overdose occurred in the 12-month period ending in August 2022, according to data from the U.S. CDC. Marta Sokolowska, the Deputy Center Director for Substance Use and Behavioral Health in FDA's Center for Drug Evaluation and Research, pointed out that drug abuse has become one of the most devastating public health crises in the United States.

What’s the story with the huge amount of garbage as you hit the overpasses coming into town ? Is it not the city who should be coming in and cleaning it up? God forbid we made some insentive to get those that are throwing shit all over the place to clean it up themselves.
Do other town organize groups to go out and clean up on weekends?

2023.03.30 06:42 palmmoon28 Do Miserable Antinatalists need Carl Jung's Individuation?

Miserable Antinatalists...you've reached a point in your life where you are miserable, you hate life's suffering, and wish not you or others to create anymore beings that suffer. OK. Great. You've realized your Self is like a Prisoner in a gross suffering meat suit. According to Jung (and myself, the Lucifer Avatar incarnated, prophesized by the Cathars 700 yrs ago) Christ is a symbol of the suffering Self. Now improve yourself... if you still wish to endure.
Maybe you've attempted suicide and so you've reached the Black Sun of the Nigredo phase of your alchemical individuation process. Now try to purify yourself in the Albedo phase. Integrate the different aspects and archetypes of yourself, etc, etc. Then maybe you'll change your mind about trying to convince antinatalism outside your own personal choice and help keep your community from falling into the liberal abyss with you and your contagious gloomy doomsday mentality cult of 2012.
View your mind and body as an alchemical vessel. The final stage of the Great Work is Gold. The Gold of Wisdom...not eternal miserable complaining. You're Welcome.
