Hi everyone, it's me again. First off, wow, I was NOT expecting so many people to react to my last post. I guess people really like robots?
This post is a follow-up of sorts to that other bit of drama. Some of the players are the same: Teams 1114 and 2056 both make appearances here again, but we have a whole new suite of team numbers for you to remember.
This is the story of how 9000+ people watched the best robots in the world get sabotaged, live, at the finals of the World Championships. It's obviously tilted towards 1114 and 2056 - because they were explicitly named in the resulting report - but it also affected 10 other amazing teams that year.
Background: FIRST Robotics
I wrote about the unique nature of FIRST Robotics in my other post, so I'll quickly summarize what I said there: FIRST is a robotics competition for high-schoolers where teams build 120-lb robots to play a unique game. The game changes every year, and teams have 6 weeks to build a robot to play that game. Those robots then go to competition, qualifying for the World Championships.
The founding principle of FIRST is Gracious Professionalism. It's the idea of competing like hell on the field (within the rules, of course) while helping each other succeed off of it. It's not uncommon for teams in the finals of competition to be helping repair each other's robots between matches, even if that's making it harder for them to win.
Gracious Professionalism comes through in a lot of ways. In FIRST, it has been boiled down to "Act like your Grandma is watching." Always be fair, polite, and professional. It's hard to really convey how important GP is to people who haven't lived through FIRST.
Championship Structure
In FIRST, teams compete in local, regional competitions to qualify for the World Championship Event. Champs is huge: 400+ teams (the largest regionals are 70 teams, for context). FIRST Champs takes over NFL stadiums - in 2012, when this drama happens, the event was held at the Edward Jones Dome in St Louis, the then-home of the St Louis Rams.
Because there are so many teams competing, teams are randomly separated into divisions. In 2012 there were four divisions: Archimedes, Galileo, Newton, and Curie. Each division played through a regular weekend competition, and then the winners of each division faced off on Einstein, the Final Field.
2012: Rebound Rumble
2012's game was called Rebound Rumble. Robots had to score foam basketballs into different hoops for more points, while also moving across a steel barrier in the middle of the field. To help cross, there were three bridges: one for each alliance, and one "neutral" bridge which served as the centre of the drama of my last post.
At the end of the match, alliances got extra points for balancing robots on these bridges, with the most points for alliances that could balance all three robots on the bridge at once. These difficult "Triple Balances" had the potential to swing a match. Just watch the first-ever competitive triple balance, and also some dangers of going for balances.
By the time Champs came around, teams had found a good balance (ehe) between scoring hoops and balancing on the bridge. But there were some alliances that could do both, including 1114 and 2056.
The Eh-Team
Even though this was their 6th year of competing at Worlds, 2012 was just the second time 1114 and 2056 were in the same division. They were in the Archimedes field, and 2056 seeded 2nd. They picked 1114, and then rounded out their alliance with team 4334, another Canadian team from Alberta who'd built a verrrrrry small robot. I believe this was the first time all three members of an alliance were Canadian. They were instantly called the Eh-Team, and Canadians flocked to Archimedes to watch them compete (after their own teams were eliminated).
The Eh-Team won Archimedes thanks to pulling off the Triple balance. 2056 and 1114 had built "long" robots, and common perception was that you needed "wide" robots to pull off the move. If 4334 wasn't so tiny, they probably couldn't have done it.
All this to say, hopes were high going into Einstein. 1114 was a well-known and admired team across all FIRST, and 2056 was just starting to make a name for themselves from under 1114's shadow as well. They were widely seen as the favourites heading into the Finals.
Einstein 2012
I was actually there watching this competition, so I'm going to describe it how it happened. In the first match, Team 118 the Robonauts from Houston, Texas stopped moving for a portion of the match. Their alliance fought valliantly, but couldn't overcome the loss of their top-scorer.
The second semi-finals match featured the Eh-Team. Halfway through the match, 2056's robot stopped moving as well. Then 1114's robot died. 2/3rds of the alliance were dead in the water.
There was chaos in the stands. People were confused. FIRST officials immediately flooded the field as the match ended, and the area around the field looked like a kicked anthill.
FIRST announced that they were going to replay the first set of Semi-Finals matches again. This was unprecedented. FIRST only replays matches when they know that they were the cause of the issue - if it's an issue with the robots, then the results stand.
But the issues kept happening. 118 died again just 4 seconds into the match. 2056 and 1114 died in their match as well. But FIRST didn't replay those matches. They pushed on, and both alliances were eliminated. The crowd alternated from silent to outraged. It was like watching a ship sink. Everyone knew something was happening. But nobody knew what.
In the finals, a whole new set of teams died intermittantly. 4 of the 6 teams in the finals - including 2 of the World Champions - died at various points in the matches. When the dust cleared - and the confetti flew - teams 16, 25, and 180 had been crowned champions, but even they had a hard time celebrating.
Oh, also, there was a Tornado Warning at the same time. It was some Shakespeare, King-Lear-In-The-Storm sort of event.
Aftermath: Einstein
People immediately started blaming FIRST for what had happened, both for ignoring what seemed to be an issue with their field, and for continuing on regardless of the compromised competition.
Most of the anger came from the Einstein field itself. FIRST builds a limited number of fields every year and ships them around the world for competitions, but the field used for Einstein is always brand new. The public was convinced that the issue was in the field, which hadn't been tested in competitive play.
In a /FRC Reddit Post, one user comments:

I was confused as to how Red lost comms in both the original match and the re-match. I didn't fully believe it was a driver-side issue. If the field really is to blame, I want an entire re-re-match of Einstein. And on a tested field this time.

Scrolling through the Match Thread on Chief Delphi (the unofficial FRC forums) shows how people started to notice robots going down. At this point, everyone is in shock seeing that 118 and the Eh-Team were still dying.
One user sums it up:

So to summarize, all we know is that there were 4 robots that seemed to work fine on division fields, and failed to work on Einstein for some reason. But all FIRST knows is that there’s 4 robots that consistently didn’t work on Einstein, so it must be a problem with the robots.

I'm having trouble picking out specific threads or posts to pull, but suffice to say, people were Not Happy. Nobody was happy. This was seen as a huge black eye for FIRST, and there was a lot of criticism of FIRST for the way they handled the competition.
FIRST quarantined the robots and the field immediately following Einstein. They flew the field to their headquarters in New Hampshire and put all 12 robots in big plastic bags to be shipped as well. Everything was left in its immediately-post-Einstein state. They announced that they were going to run tests and an inquiry into what happened on Einstein. (This was received positively by the community).
Nobody expected what had actually happened.
More Background: WIFI and Radio
FIRST robots act wirelessly, controlled with joysticks or video-game controllers. Each robot is equipped with a radio that is linked to the field infrastructure, which lets the drivers control the robots. But in 2012, FIRST changed their central control system that every robot used. They changed from a radio-based system to a wifi-based system.
The 2012 season was plagued with issues that could be described as Growing Pains as everyone adjusted to the new system. So there was lots of blame on FIRST relating to wifi usage or overload, and it was seen as the source of the issues on Einstein.
See, since the field was using wifi networks, you could actually see the networks on your phone or laptop. You could theoretically connect to these networks and disrupt communications. I say theoretically because the FIRST FMS (Field Management System) generated a new password for each network at the beginning of every match. You would have ~2 minutes to hack a randomly-generated password. This was seen as Impossible by FIRST (and it was), but there was one catch...
Okay, back to the drama.
The Einstein Inquiry
FIRST flew all their top techs and also recruited 18 industry experts to try to figure out what went wrong. They then invited reps from all 12 Einstein teams to New Hampshire to run tests and answer questions.
Unfortunately, FIRST changed their website and nuked their Director's Blogs in 2017, which means that the initial blog posts announcing the inquiry and the results of the inquiry are now lost (even Web Archive shows "sorry, that page no longer exists"). Luckily, the actual report from the inquiry is still up.
The report found that every robot on Einstein had some sort of issue, whether faulty wiring that could have caused reboots, to poor code that interacted weirdly with the FMS. All of these issues are usual occurences - high schoolers build and code these robots, after all - but did not actually explain why there were so many outages at once on Einstein.
However, the report also found the most salacious cause of the issues in FIRST history (not clickbait):

While the Einstein matches were in progress, an individual was observed near the field using a cell phone in an apparent attempt to access the field WiFi network. This individual had attempted to engage field personnel in discussions while the field personnel were troubleshooting other issues. This individual was asked to put away the cell phone, and complied. Later, the individual was observed using the cell phone again, and at that point, before the last two Einstein matches were played, was asked to leave the field area, and did so.

The report conclusions start on page 20, but here are some snippets which I'll refer to later:

118 – This chain of events was replicated during the Einstein testing weekend and caused symptoms identical to those seen in all three of 118's matches on Einstein.

(They had found an issue with 118's gyro that caused them to lose connection. It was an unfortunate team issue, not a field issue.

1114 – While the positive terminal on the main battery connector was not fully inserted, and the main breaker had a sensitive “off” switch, rigorous and aggressive testing of the robot on the field did not result in any command response failures. Because of this, failed client authentication is a stronger explanation of the command response failures, especially in light of the witness report of this activity

(1114 had a host of robot issues, but was most likely interfered with.)

2056 – There was a confirmed report of failed client authentication as the cause of the command response failure for this robot in the original Semi-Final 2-1. In the replay of Semi-Final 2-1, the D-Link robot radio was unresponsive to network pings, suggesting that the radio may have lost power. ... Further testing later in the weekend revealed that this robot radio exhibited the same unresponsive behavior when failed client authentication was used. Therefore, either scenario could explain this command response failure.

(2056 was found to be specifically interfered with, no ifs-ands-or-buts.)
Chief Delphi Reacts!
The thread on FIRST's report is over 380 posts long, which just shows how hard this report hit the community. Lots of commenters showed surprise at all of the robot and coding issues.
But then the thread quickly devolved. While FIRST identified that there was someone who was attempting to DDoS attack teams on Einstein, they kept their identity secret. Allegations and potential finger-pointing started flying as people try to be Internet Detectives:

I do think it’s worth noting that prior to their being knocked out, the Archimedes alliance was the only one suffering problems likely caused by FCA. If the interferer had an agenda, it seems that 1114, 2056, and 4334 was the primary target.

This is a good reminder: with the identity of the hacker unknown, this had the potential to tarnish some good reputations:

I think this thought process is very dangerous, before you know it you are pointing the finger at certain teams that were on Einstein. It could have been so many iterations of people and pointing the finger at someone specifically the wrong someone is not what FIRST is about.

Karthik, a lead mentor from 1114, comes in and heavily suggests that the Einstein teams know the identity of the individual behind the attack:

We are shocked, dismayed and troubled that an individual on a FIRST team would actually perform an intentional, malicious, wireless attack on our alliance. We are concerned that neither the individual nor the team he is associated have yet to come forward and publicly apologize for this horrendous incident. We hope that they come forward publicly soon, so we can all put this terrible event behind us. It would be a shame if they hid under the cloak of anonymity. Even if the team was completely unaware of the individual’s actions, we would still hope that they would come forward, so that some of the motives would become more clear.

Some people push back, warning against mob justice:

... the point im getting at is, putting forth the person and team publicly would do far greater harm to the team and their image amongst their peers and the FIRST community. I think a much better solution to what Karthik wants, and is justified in wanting, is to have all the parties involved meet so that everyone can be satisfied as to reasons why, punishment, etc… But I do beleive that this shouldnt be known to the masses.

As the community argues whether or not the individual or team should come forward, some users have some fun with their points:

Wow, I just found this:
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: SAMSUNG TO WITHDRAW FROM AMERICAN MARKET FOLLOWING ATTACK BY ROGUE DEVICE
The actions of the individual Samsung Galaxy Nexus device that deliberately disrupted the 28 Apr 2012 Einstein matches were reprehensible and unjustifiable. ... Samsung will make all possible efforts to identify and bring to justice the specific device responsible for the actions of 28 Apr. Samsung and its corporate partners are taking immediate action to shut down all US and Canadian manufacturing and sales activity, followed by a phased withdrawal from the North American market. Additional details will be forthcoming.

This was obviously a joke (the report noted that the hacker used a Samsung Nexus phone) but because this is the internet, some people didn't catch it:

Considering that Samsung just release the Samsung S3 I am holding in my hand forgive me if I doubt the validity of this statement in the sense it could be taken. Such a move would financially utterly destroy their company and in point of fact cause massive financial damage to the manufacturers that support them.

Around now, FIRST sends an eblast to all teams (I can't find the actual email, but its referred to throughout the thread) saying that the hacker has received a lifetime ban from FIRST and that they weren't a member of any of the "winning teams". This is the first time (and I believe the only?) FIRST has ever banned someone from participation. Also, the implication that it wasn't a winning teams leads more people to conclude that the hacker was one of the other 9 Einstein teams.
Another Einstein team chimes in:

Look, there is more to this story. We actually do know exactly who did this and we know more about their motive than you’d think. No it wasn’t curiousity or accidental. We had eye-witnesses to some suspicious behavior right on Einstein. We took pictures of the person. We told the FTA right on the spot. We even told our opponent 1114. We didn’t put the whole puzzle together until New Hampshire (i.e. we didn’t fully understand what we were seeing at the time) but now we know exactly what happened and who did it.

Holtzman - coach for 2056 - comes into the thread and gives an emotional account of his experiences at the inquiry. He ends his post saying:

We in no way blame the entire team for the actions of this individual, but do feel they should stand up and acknowledge that a member of their team was responsible for the FCA attacks on multiple Einstein teams, and potentially others at the Championship and other events. We will give them time to do properly while being respectful to the innocent members of their team.

(Other Einstein teams, including 987 who had robot issues in the finals, voice agreement with this post. By this point, it is clear that FIRST and the 12 teams know who the hacker is and wants them to come forward.)
Finally, this user comes up with the Worst Take of the Thread:

as a gamer I have made my skin thicker against hackers so that when I hear foul play was suspected I can positively say “then up your game”.

The Hacker, Revealed
A month later, Team 548 - who was part of the Newton alliance with 118 - comes to FIRST and asks them to release a statement to the community. FIRST does so.
Chief Delphi Thread. Once again, the specific post has been deleted from FIRST's website, but thankfully this time the Wayback Machine comes in clutch. Full statement here, with highlights:

On page 10 of the 40 page report, in section FAILED CLIENT AUTHENTICATION ON EINSTEIN it was made mention that an individual was observed near the field using a cell phone in an apparent attempt to access the field Wi-Fi network. This individual was a mentor for Team 548...
The individual has consistently stated that this occurred once and once only. We, Team 548, apologize that the action of an individual member of our team contributed to the controversy and issues associated with Einstein. Specifically, we extend our apologies to Teams 1114, 2056, and 4334 and the impact to their teams.

FRC's Director Frank Merrick releases the statement with the following statement:

To be clear, there are some differences between this understanding of events and the events as presented in the Einstein Report. FIRST continues to stand by its report.

The community largely applauds 548 for coming forward and apologizing, and as far as I can tell, there's no further penalty on them. But users also do note Frank's language, and refer to the report that says that 2056 and 1114 were interfered with in multiple matches.
No posts are made from Einstein teams in that thread.
Back to Einstein: What Happened
Remember what I had said about the Wifi networks up above? Well, a mentor from team 548 the Robostangs had discovered an issue with a mid-season software patch. It turns out that you didn't have to enter the correct password to disrupt service - you just needed to submit any password, and the network's response was to automatically reboot, effectively severing connection.
As I was writing this, sangu- replied to my other post explaining their view of what had happened (they were a driver on one of the Einstein teams). Their whole post is great as well, read it here. In particular, I had never heard this part:

During this time a programming mentor on 548 shouted "I know why these robots are not working, there is a hacker in the building and I can show you how they are breaking these robots!" He took out his phone and said "I will make 1114 sit dead on the field!" ... The mentor then took out his phone and repeatedly connected to the 1114 robot, DDOS'ing it and the robot sat dead on the field. He then moved to 2056 and did the same thing. At this point, he was completely convinced that someone out in the stands was DDOS'ing the competition.

548 was on 118's alliance, and when this mentor saw 118 stop moving in their match, he went to FIRST officials to tell them that he thought he knew the cause of the issues (to be clear, he didn't). FIRST officials ignored him, since they were all busy trying to figure out what was going on, and so he took it on himself to show them.
The FIRST Report says:

After Championship, this individual came forward wishing to share knowledge regarding the failed client authentication issue. The individual claimed to have attempted to connect to the network associated with Team 2056 during Semi-Final 2-1 and observed that this attempt corresponded with the robot losing communication.

He then was removed from the field, and apparently did so. But despite claiming he only impacted the first (replayed) semi-final match, FIRST found that 1114 and 2056 were most likely blocked again in their second match. Either this mentor never told the full truth (probable), or there was a second hacker in the audience.
Side-Drama: Total, Unfounded Conjecture
Some people point out that 1717 D'Penguineers, a strong team from California, had similar comms issues in the Newton playoffs before being eliminated in the semi-finals. These observations take a more ominous lean when the hacker is revealed: 548's alliance were the Newton Champions.
A 1717 team member confirms that they have no idea what caused their robot to lose connection in their matches.
No formal allegations are made connecting 1717 with the hacker. They also did not compete directly against 548 in the Newton eliminations.
The Aftermath
As I said, the hacker in question was banned for life from FIRST. To my knowledge, they have never been identified outside of their former membership on Team 548.
1114 won the Championship Chairman's Award that year, recognizing them as one of the ideal teams in the competition not just for having a great robot, but for their efforts in building community and spreading STEM education. They remain a Hall of Fame team.
2056 came inches of winning on Einstein in 2016, losing by a single penalty tiebreaker point. They have yet to win the World Championship.
FIRST committed to greater transparency around their FMS and specs, releasing whitepapers about their systems. While not perfect, teams generally agree that they treated the situation fairly and as best as anyone could.

Welcome everyone to Week 4 of my series on the circumstances surrounding the departures of the Law & Order characters.
In the Law & Order cast exit system, the actors are represented by two separate and definitely not at all equal groups. The ones who left relatively amicably and warmly, and the ones who were kind of bitter and filled with some hard feelings. These are there stories.
CHUNG-CHUNG
“And I actually had to tie the two [halves of the show} together, go right in with the cops and bring it over to the DA’s office. I was the glue.” That was Richard Brooks, while being interviewed for Law & Order: The Unofficial Companion Book, talking about his role as Paul Robinette. He was right, and that job as the glue was part of his legacy. As the seasons wore on and the characters came and went, the Junior Assistant District Attorney role continued to be that of the glue, the emissary who usually receives the case from the detectives at around the 15-20 minute mark, bitches about the lack of evidence, and then eventually agrees to whatever arrest is being pushed by the cops in the scene. After that, Stone/McCoy/Cutter usually has doubts about the case but resolves to try it on the JADA’s recommendation, Schiff/Lewin/Branch/McCoy has serious doubts about the case but is able to come around with the help and reassurance of both EADA and the JADA, and then the EADA wins the case, usually with a serious assist/discovery of some sort from the JADA at the 45-50 minute mark. Changes to this format were very much the exception and not the norm, but all JADAs at the very least conducted a cross-examination of a suspect in court at one point during their run. All except Paul Robinette that is. It turned out to be ok though. Robinette is the rarest of birds: an ADA on the show who left the DA’s office to become a defense attorney and subsequently returned to defend his clients against the DA’s office. All of this happened after the producers fired Brooks, along with last week’s subject Dann Florek, in 1993. By firing him, they might have saved his character. Robinette is now very close to or at the top of many fans’ lists of favorite JADAs. Only Claire Kincaid, IMO, did it better, but Paul is right behind her on my list. It just might be because he stopped being on the show when he did.
The role of Paul Robinette was originally down to Brooks and Eriq LaSalle. The network wanted LaSalle but Wolf preferred Brooks. Wolf won out and Richard Brooks was cast in the role. I have no doubt LaSalle was remembered by NBC; a couple of years later, he began his run on ER, and it would last many years. Brooks actually was sporting dreadlocks when he began. The hairdresser on the set told him that since he was going to be spending a lot of time on the show just standing around that he should “have a look, do something with his look to make it cool”. Enter the flattop of justice. It was an excellent call by Brooks and the hair department, and it gave the show something current and culturally relevant. That was a hairstyle that was at the time pretty fashionable amongst young Black men, who they no doubt wanted to relate to Robinette if they tuned in.
Law & Order and its take on race relations is a topic that has probably been written about too many times now for me to add anything new to it. And in all honesty, I don’t know how qualified I am to really look at the whole thing as far as realism goes. I’m a White, straight, physically able middle class man, and race relations and other issues that affect certain marginalized groups, and the resulting turmoil from those issues, sort of pass me over in my day-to-day life. Law & Order clearly had good intentions trying to incorporate those all too real issues and they certainly succeeded at the storytelling aspect in some of those episodes. My favorite episode, after all, is Sanctuary (S4E19), which is based on the 1991 Crown Heights Riot in Brooklyn, and that one was about as direct as the messages ever got. Strictly from a viewer point of view, though, in some other episodes the message was a little too on the nose sometimes and it felt that they were beating you over the head with a hammer to drive the message home. Race was just one of many topics and hot button issues that the show was guilty of doing this with. In the first three seasons, Robinette, as the sole Black cast member, was usually the one who was focused on in these episodes. Brooks always delivered and injected that realism right into his performance. Not only that, he set up his own exit brilliantly, whether intentionally or, more than likely, unintentionally.
Born and raised in Harlem, Paul Robinette turned down offers from a few prominent Wall Street firms to go and work in the DA’s office. He started there sometime in 1986, and had been working as second chair to Ben Stone for about 8 months at the start of the series. Brooks told Us Magazine in 1992 that he had to “take [himself] down to a real zero place and go into a numb state” in order to play that role of the sidekick, presumably to take away some of his expectations as an actor regarding screen time and dialogue and the like. Maybe that’s why Brooks, like I said of Florek last week, seems just a bit off and inconsistent with his acting at the very start. He’s very stiff with some of his line deliveries and generally ‘wooden’ at times, IMO. His scene in Subterranean Homeboy Blues (S1E2) with Cynthia Nixon in her apartment, for example, is just painful. She isn’t all that great either in that scene but Brooks’ delivery is like someone is forcing him to act at gunpoint. To get to that place as an actor, that real numb state, takes fine tuning I would imagine, or at least learning more about the character and their truth. Fortunately, like Florek, Brooks overcame the rough start before really pulling into a groove as the middle of season 1 approached.
Brooks’ coming out party is Out of the Half-Light (S1E11), the episode that ripped the Tawana Brawley case from its headlines. He is just excellent across the board, with his scene in the Empire Diner with Congressman Eaton having drawn much praise over the years. He’s just as convincing and affecting when Robinette is telling the victim’s father that his days terrorizing his family are over, for good. The scene that I love the most, and is one of the most moving in hindsight, is the final one. Stone, asked by Robinette if he believes Paul “sold out” and seeing the toll the case has taken on Paul throughout the episode, asks him on their way out of the office if he considers himself “a Black lawyer, or a lawyer who’s Black?”. Paul, clearly not 100% really knowing an answer yet, tells him it depends on the context. When asked if he thinks Paul will “come to love [his decision]” by morning, Stone flat out tells him no, probably not. He doesn’t think Paul will have any problem with the guy in the mirror, though. They part ways, Paul crossing over to the other side of the street to make his way home. It’s damn near perfect.
Paul gets some nice moments over the next two seasons, including a great moment towards the end of Cradle to Grave (S2E18) when he has to go undercover on the spot. He pulls it off brilliantly, and even tries to hang on to the famous Mike Logan leather jacket for a few extra minutes before Logan snatches it back. The final episode in which he has a major impact and scenes of note, however, is Mother Love (S3E15). In an episode that can be seen as something of a companion piece to Out of the Half-Light, Robinette is once again torn between the obligations he feels as a Black man towards his people and his job as ADA. The scene he shares with the victim’s father on the steps of the courthouse at the end is just devastating. Robinette, unlike the scene with Eaton in season 1, cannot truly buy into what he is trying to say about the system trying to help their people, even if it fails sometimes. Fred Bryant tells him to “call [him] when [Robinette’s] kids are grown" and tell him if he still believes that. And he walks away, and Paul just stands there, unable to truly process the last hour. This time he can’t fall back on the whole “well the system stinks sometimes but it’s really ok cause we’re trying and you’re no better” thing he had been able to lean on in the earlier episode, when he had a much less sympathetic person up against him. Brooks, with one look, makes whatever is happening in Paul’s head look truly messy and difficult. It’s a good thing he massively succeeded in that scene, because it is the last sign we get of what is going to eventually be spelled out as the on-screen reason for his exit.
As I wrote about Florek last week, Dick Wolf did not want to have to call Richard Brooks to tell him that after 3 seasons his run was over, all because NBC came to the conclusion that the lack of female characters was leading to ratings difficulties. Brooks found out he was fired on his home answering machine after returning home from a vacation, expecting to get to work starting on shooting for season 4 soon. Goddamn that sucks. At least he got a scene early in season 4 acknowledging his departure, with Van Buren asking Stone if she could see Paul to talk to him and Stone answering that she would have to take a cab uptown to Park Avenue to do that, confirming that he had gone into work as a defense attorney. The scene was cut before the episode aired, of course, but it made it onto the season 4 DVD as a deleted scene. And while executive producer Ed Sherin made a curious comment to Entertainment Weekly in 1995, specifically that Brooks “didn’t get along with [Michael] Moriarty and was grousing all the time”, Brooks was widely liked and appreciated behind the scenes, from what I can tell. Wolf definitely felt bad about having to chop Brooks, and he did his best to make it right.
Custody (S6E14) sees the return of Paul Robinette to the show. Gone is the flattop and the “numb place” Brooks had to go to when playing alongside Moriarty. Instead, Brooks is given free rein to really move around as an actor, especially in the court scenes. He is 10x as magnetic as he ever was during his run on the show as a result and scene after scene he tops himself. Whether getting the judge to recuse himself from the case over a comment he made almost a decade earlier (and invoking his mentor’s unimpeachable and doggedly honest reputation to ensure it happens) and immediately shutting McCoy down when he tries to accuse Paul of being a bully afterwards, earning him praise from Adam Schiff, or jousting with his successor Claire in a phenomenal late night bar conversation that we sadly never got the follow-up to, Paul is clearly taking this opportunity to make sure it is known exactly how good of a lawyer he is, how good he’s always been. He succeeds, outwitting the DA’s office and securing a hung jury. While he says he’ll talk to his client about a plea instead of a new trial, he also makes it clear to Jack: he wanted the jury to send a message. Jack certainly received the message and told Paul as much. “You’re a long way from the district attorney’s office,” was how McCoy worded it to him. Robinette could hardly look more crystal clear in his conviction when he tells McCoy what he has only just realized about himself. “Ben Stone once said I had to decide if I was a lawyer who was Black or a Black man who was a lawyer. All those years I thought I was the former. All those years I was wrong.” A chain of events, starting in Out of the Half-Light, climaxing in Mother Love, and finally resolved at the end of Custody when Paul tells Jack that he knows who he is and what his purpose is. When Robinette returns home, he will be able to go look in the mirror and be alright with the guy who is looking back at him, just as his mentor told him he would. That we were able to witness his acceptance of who he was as it advanced over the years, even when the character was axed by the network, was a true privilege.
Brooks would return a few times, but he did not follow up his first appearance on the other side of the aisle for nearly a decade. He returns in Birthright (S16E6) to once again square off with Jack, this time sharing a brief scene with Alex Borgia that acknowledges his past on the show, but it is decidedly a low-key affair this time out. He appears one last time the following season in Fear America (S17E4) where, despite being adversaries in court mere hours ago, he shares a final drink with Jack at the end, being one of the few people in the world who have an idea how Jack is currently feeling. I really wish they went more into McCoy and Robinette’s history. They were clearly pretty cool with each other in the past and both respected the hell out of the other. The appearance made Brooks the final member of the original cast to make an appearance on an episode of Law & Order. Paul Robinette wasn’t done practicing, though.
Early 2017 saw Dick Wolf expand his fictional Chicago universe to the world of law. Chicago Justice was a show I’ll talk more about next week but Philip Winchester starred on the show as Peter Stone, son of Ben and Assistant State’s Attorney out in Chicago. While we saw a couple of old friends during the show’s brief run, including both OG defense attorney Shambala Green (Lorraine Toussaint) and the extremely divisive Danielle Melnick (Tovah Feldshuh), it was Robinette’s return in Uncertainty Principle (S1E2) that made me actually tune in. And of course, all the best scenes involved Robinette, especially the one in Peter’s office toward the end when Ben is brought up and discussed briefly. Brooks hadn’t missed a step and continued to lend an air of hard-won confidence to the character that was somewhat lacking in the original run. And it’s that confidence that makes all the difference when reappraising his character. Knowing he is on this journey of self-discovery and finding his way in the world, and usually being put in what must be a very difficult spot, makes so much of his run more poignant and interesting. Even better, in the end he decides working for the “good guys” isn’t for him, and crosses to the other side, to the “bad guys” who we’re not supposed to want to win. Who out there really doesn’t want Paul to win that case at the end of Custody, though?
Had Paul Robinette been given the Mark Brendanawicz treatment by the show after Brooks was fired it would have been criminal. The character had obvious depth, Brooks had obvious talent, and to throw that away due to executive meddling was a terrible decision, even if it led to the arrival of Van Buren and Kincaid. Rectifying that mistake, with both Brooks and Florek, was one of the more satisfying and heartwarming things to come out of the series. Richard Brooks has appeared in a few roles since the L&O days, notably in the cult tv series Firefly and on the BET series Being Mary Jane. In 2022, Law & Order was revived by NBC. Waterston is still on, AFAIK, as DA Jack McCoy once again. So to any of the current L&O writers who for whatever reason might read this, this would be a great time to bring back Paul Robinette to work with McCoy and provide some of that original feeling, from back when the show was gritty, dirty, and unmistakably New York. Brooks reprised the role fairly recently, and was very good when he did. He’s certainly had nothing but good to say about Law & Order and his time on the show. Toward the close of his interview for the companion book, Brooks reflects on Paul Robinette’s impact, saying that “maybe even now in the greater picture of the ‘90s, I think Robinette has helped a lot of Black actors get better roles, helped society in a way.” He seems proud of his work and comes across in interviews as a cordial but direct guy with a little hard-won confidence. He does not have any problem with the dude in the mirror. Sounds kind of like a certain JADA that we all came to know and love.
I hope everyone who has been reading along with these has enjoyed the last few weeks. Most of the stories behind the exits have been pretty satisfying and even a little touching at times. That will not be the case for the next departure, either on or off screen, so brace yourselves. On a personal level, it will likely be the most difficult one for me to write, for reasons I’ll explain next week. The inimitable Michael Moriarty, in the role of Executive Assistant District Attorney Benjamin Stone, is next week’s subject.

For the record, I been helping a friend who has a Blink camera system set up to monitor her home and she had no clue how insecure they are or how easy it was to take over the blink system.
Been dealing with a Savvy Digital Stalker who figured out a means to get access to the Blink system via their unofficial API and doing a MITM (man in the middle) attack to get credentials from the camera communication. He takes over the module and either renames cameras, takes individual ones offline (6 outdoor cams and doorbell, one indoor) , Sets the status to disarm and of recent, takes the sync module completely down where you have to reboot it to resolve.
Changing the account password to 30 characters did nothing as the damn cameras on passing info to the module on a wifi network, pass credentials. Securing the wifi network has been done (100character passwords) and still this ass gets the token from the cameras communicating by pretending to be her nework and capturing its communication first.
I have set an outside the network computer to now use a python blink api library ( and her. blink credentials) to check on the arm status of the network and when unarmed, it resets it back to armed and notifies me and her via text. I recently had to add checks on module status and when its offline, notifies me as i now have the module on a smartplug that i can turn off n on from an app since the api doesnt give you the ability to bring the module online (or i havent found it). I am now researching how i can possibly access the smartplug via an api and when the blink system reports offline, it would trigger code to send a command to the smart plug to turn off and on. All this code is set on a scheduler to check status every 4 minutes (i had it originally at every minute but the Blink API gateway tends think the requests were a DDOS attack and forced a authorization token refresh)
These cams are NOT SECURE. the hacker was able to accesss the live feed and watch and hear what was going on (one internal camera on the system). I have scrambled to keep the blink system up and add an alternate camera system that has in-camera memory and cloud storage to add as redundancy.
Until Blink resolves securing the communication between the cams and modules that even if sniffed by MITM attacks, they dont give up the access authorization token for some unauthorized party to have full access to your system to them, i would not let anyone else buy these things.

Our community has an organized ranking structure beginning with Members who comprise the majority of the roster. Scouts are our support team of Members who've stepped up to more officially support the FC, some work on obtaining a future leadership rank. Lieutenants and Officers comprise the proud Azure Council, a diverse group of players of different specialties and services to the FC, making up lower and higher tier leadership, seeing over the Scouts and the FC weekly events, aside from being admins. The FC Infinitum Master oversees all and leads the Azure Council and the company forward while always keeping the heart and vision of the community alive and in sight. Currently we are re-assessing ranks in the free company, giving more support permissions and duties to our Scouts, while the current council operates as a small team of Lieutenants lead by the FC Master.
Everyone Welcome and Who Fits Best
We have an open door policy. Whether you're casual, a returning player, a veteran, or a newbie, we have a vast array of players in our member roster. Our weekly schedule is organized and provides an array of activity for players of most levels, however we like to ask players who're pretty new or under the level cap, to be extra vocal about their needs while they're still unable to attend some daily events or higher level content that most of our weekly lineup focuses on. We want everyone to have as much fun as possible and have the most success. We find that most players enjoy Azure Infinitum, many have stated that they subscribed to FFXIV much longer than they ever would have imagined after they have been around in our community, as they've gotten involved and experienced all that we offer.
Our FC keeps a daily schedule (see here: https://www.azureinfinitum.com/events/) of events that are hosted by permitted Scouts and Council ranks, these range from 8-man and 24-man raids and map parties, to WT journal groups and trial clear parties or farms, and more- and attending anything isn't mandatory at all here. We're happy to have you, and its up to our members how much they'd like to get involved. Attendance is optional! There's never any stress to attend FC functions.
Savage Raiding Statement
We find that some hardcore raiders looking for free companies just to join their statics who don't already have one, might not fit well if savage raiding is their only or greatest focus, because traditionally Azure does not have a Savage Static, but focuses more on allowing members to organize their own groups and also provides resources to do so. Despite not supporting an official static for the FC, we hope that hardcore raiders enjoy the wealth of our community's wealth of harmony and overall fun, and that everyone may take initiative to seek out or build a raiding static within our community if they are interested, as opposed to missing out on experiencing Azure. Depending on the content season, we may have an Unofficial static lead by a leader, and routinely offer limited time Savage-learning events that may run for a number of months.
Rules and No Drama Policy
Please take a moment to look over our Rules Page at (https://www.azureinfinitum.com/rules/), we find that rude individuals and people who create drama are the outsiders here that don't fit well. We know its a big page, so at least visit the General Rules section before joining.
Recruitment Care & Activity
People of Azure Infinitum are often if not always good natured players who found their way to our community looking for a place with structure, friendliness, organization, and great activity, or they've been scouted during recruitment drives and have been well screened. Its a place where one can be social and attend everything, or relax in the background and enjoy the services and facilities of being in an active, organized, and friendly FC. We actively recruit periodically to assist with upkeep of community activity levels, and to meet new comrades. A community that closes recruitment can be doomed to stagnation. Its normal for a community to have an inner core of die hards who log in daily regardless of content releases, and also have an outer core of individuals that range from those with less availability to those who check in during Patches. This is why we take extra care in keeping the fresh blood flowing into Azure, cautious recruitment, and support our active model by always staying welcoming and sometimes running recruitment campaigns and other services. Like this ad!
Handling Online Drama
Because we keep a no-drama policy and have a strong communication network, it is leadership's ultimate priority to handle any issues that may come up as soon as possible, and most people appreciate our problem solving which has inspired many other communities. Between our Support & Leadership ranks, we use a number of report and resource channels to handle situations, and perform problem solving protocols & tactics to fairly address issues as possible. Drama is inevitable at some point for any online community, so its important to have a large and strong list of moderators (currently around 60!) and a council of leaders (15+) to quickly handle any problems. Luckily, we don't have a lot of drama, but we're always very well equipped and very prepared. Our community has been commended by game staff in the past for our methods, and we have worked with the FFXIV Special Task Force to ensure as much safety to our community as achievable. It should be stressed that it is up to our membership to report to GM's in-game, and to Azure Leadership should any issues or concerns come up. Its also highly recommended that our members appropriately document evidence that can be used to help us assess situations and make proper decisions. Documenation such as screenshots of harassment is a great example! Our members online safety is greatly important to us and is a number one concern of our leadership team. Estate Organization
We have the entire set-up at our estate, from gardens for members and Krakka Root production (free for members' chocobos), to our stables, nicely uniform clean lawn with hangout spots that are popular, with crafting stations, all available NPCs for simple mats and repairs, cut-scene viewer, toybox, triple-triad board, a fully operational and geared fleet of airships and subs, and our Azure Infinitum Assembly Chamber on the top floor for our meetings where announcements are made at our Grand Assemblies. We also have an organized form of gathering for weekly events in the yard, places to relax, food that is always available on tables at our Cellar, and hold a lot of special events and social games at our Hall. We're also conveniently located next to a Market Board and a Retainer Bell outside of our estate.

More On Events
One part of our reputation that often precedes us is our event crafting and hosting.
First, let me make sure its clear that attendance is never mandatory, but those who can make use, when possible, of what we provide each day, benefit from our events each week.
Since our beginning, traditions like our Thursday Treasure Thursdays events have run each week. Our weekly line-up presently begins on Tuesdays post-weekly reset, and consists of Raid Tuesdays, Wondrous Wednesdays (WT Journal Parties, often doubles as Trial Clears and Pony Drops), Treasure Thursdays (Endwalker's timeworn maps with groups of 8 doing up to 3 rounds of maps allowing for up to 24 maps ran), 24-Man Tuesdays (full pre-formed Azure 24-member alliances are made and raids are cleared, will be returning upon the release of EW's 24-man), Super Azure Slayer Sunday (our weekly meetup to do all sorts of PVP content be it Rival Wings or Frontline), and Monstrous Mondays (helps clear the current and previous patch extreme trials).
Special, Seasonal, and Quarterly Events

We also have what we call Special and Quarterly Events. These types of events are Weekend-Long-Events that usually consist of a theme or celebratory social events we craft. During these events we hold big Riddle Races, Costume/Glamour shows and contests, 3-Story Mansion Maze Races, Speedrun Dungeon Races, Hide and Seek games, Custom Quest Events, Discord events like Cards Against Humanity nights, Comedy events, PVP Tournament Circuits, and more.
Our Special and Quarterly events are Azure Day Weekend (Takes place 3 times a year across a weekend, celebrates the FC), Azure Summer Festival (3-days at the end of August in partnership with Child's Play, raises money for children in long-term care, anniversary of historic FC event called the Lunar Rebellion), Anniversary Azure Day (a big weekend event in November that celebrates our Founding), Azure Day Saint's Wake (celebrates Halloween/All Saint's Wake), Azure Starlight Day (celebrating Starlight Day/Christmas/December Holiday Season), Azure Grand Melee and Duel Tournaments (PVP Circuit series crowning our PVP Champions) and more.
Azure Day Weekends
If you've been around our server you may have heard of our Azure Day Weekends. Our Azure Days take place quarterly as mentioned just above, with four evolved editions called Azure Summer Festival, Azure Day Saint's Wake, Azure Starlight Day, and Anniversary Azure Day. With Azure Day Weekends and related events traditionally occuring quarterly our members are always excited to see the next big weekend of crazy and fun social games, and our showering of the free company in gil and prizes galore. We go all out when we celebrate the free company, and Azure Days are another way we find for leadership to give back to the community. 2023 and beyond is now host to additional seasonal Azure Day events!
We're always giving our members a chance to have fun, win big, and make some great memories in the in-game family we've become. Something fun is always on the horizon in Azure.
Community
I almost can't stress enough how friendly our community is. We have a vast variety of members from hardcore gatherers and crafters, social butterflies, chill veterans, experienced raiders, level grinders, support teams, PVP aficionados, mechanic specialists, and mentors. We're also very friendly to all casual players as well and we keep an open door so long as recruits are always aware that we have a no-drama tolerance here.
​Evolution into a Gaming Clan & Network
Plans are in the works and foundations are being laid that is slowly turning our community into a larger gaming network, with our first established Azure Wing with regular occurring activity being founded in Monster Hunter World, this has led to a successful Destiny 2 clan and more. Becoming a member of our Discord and/or Free Company now means access to things like our huge discord, Azure Wing membership in other games, and being able to join in on any of our other activities in the general community. Azure Network as its being called at the moment, is growing with an all-new website and community features for playing together across Final Fantasy XIV and to Azure Skies beyond!
Activity
We rank high as one of the top FC's in Worldwide Activity on lodestone, and have for a long time. Most of our players are divided between the US East and West Coasts, members in East and West Canada, and a few outside the US or in EU or Aus zones. Because we do have an activity policy (mentioned below) we keep a standard flow of people, and have crowds in the early morning, late morning, early afternoon, afternoon, evening, and late night crowds.
Elitism isn't our style. Our community boasts a broad range of characters, great personalities, the proud, and also some silly goofs. But elitism isn't welcome, no matter how successful we are or how large we grow. We're always welcoming towards fresh faces interested in joining our guild, and the in-game activity ranges between 30-60+ online at once during prime time hours, sometimes around 70+ on patch days, and usually always with half the roster logging in throughout a 24 hour period, and around 15-30+ during the night.
Activity Policy
We ask that our members do not go missing without logging in for more than 60 days straight. If we hear word from someone or have some kind of decent excuse, we place our members on our On Vacation rank, which lasts presently until 90 days have passed. Exceptions are made for military deployments, hospital stays, financial issues, disability/health related issues, moving, or other reasons that might fall on a case-by-case basis.
All members not heard from in 60 days (roughly 2 months) or currently 90 days (roughly 3 months) are discharged. We allow 3 joins to Azure Infinitum in total, but exceptions can be made due to reasons listed above. If removed for inactivity, or you've left our FC for another reason and haven't already joined 3 times, you're always welcome back, but please remember, we are not a revolving door.
Keeping our roster full of members who have been online and presently play the game actively ensures an active environment for our players who play often. It also keeps our credits and clerical processes balanced across our network, and allows space for new faces to join our big happy in-game family of comrades.

A friend of mine is having an issue, heres what the problem is:
I have an issue trying to join any official server, i get kicked out instantly with a message "Network failure message : login connection timed out". But this issue doesn't happen on official servers that use the map ragnarok. On unofficial however i can join any map i have? Ive reintalled the game and deleted all my mods and done several stuff and still haven't gotten it fixed. Can someone help?

Hey guys, I usually never post on Reddit but jagex support has been useless and keeps directing me to a website issue page which gives no help or explanation on how to fix the issue.
When logging in on my desktop(ethernetted) or laptop(on wifi) both the official and unofficial launchers after attempting to login return with web service is not available. However if I go to mobile and turn off my wifi connection and go through data I can suddenly connect.
I have gigabit fiber optic and a eero mesh network and no VPNs.
Anyone have an idea on how to resolve the webservice not available error on your home network? I've tried everything but changing my default eero settings as I wouldn't think my network routers would be the issue.

Hey all. Me and an individual have been working on a replacement server for Avalaunch. A lot of you might not know about it as Avalaunch isn't a very popular dashboard like EvolutionX/UnleashX/XBMC is, but Avalaunch used servers for various features. You were able to download skins just like you can with UnleashX, download apps, update the dashboard, and even download custom maps for games, all from the dashboard. Pretty similar to what you can do with some of the current dashboards.
The servers for the dashboard have been offline for years now, we got bored and we decided to take a look at it and see if we can recreate it. We were able to set up a server to download skins from for the dashboard (most of the skins were archived and are still downloadable from xbox-hq.com) and get the dashboard to download apps. We even have the update feature of the dashboard working, so it can detect new updates for the dashboard. Sadly the dashboard has not been updated in years, and the source code for this dashboard is not public and might be lost to time, so any unofficial updates we can do to it are limited without it, but we can still make some unofficial updates/patches for the dashboard if we wanted to. We also doubt Team Avalaunch is still around, although we were surprised to see that they actually did post here on reddit somewhat recently, so they might still be somewhat around, just not fully present. We've already patched the dashboard to point to the new server (its currently a temporary proof of concept), and we're currently looking at maybe fixing the issue of the dashboard messing with the Xbox's network settings everytime it's loaded like how UnleashX and some of the other dashboards do.
We know not a lot of people will really care for this, since as mentioned already Avalaunch wasn't as popular as the other dashboards were, and there's much newer dashboards everyone uses now with more features. But maybe some people will enjoy a throwback to this dashboard and find it cool to see the server features working for it again. It was a cool dashboard for what it was and we think its somewhat iconic. We got the idea to tinker with this dashboard when a friend of ours got an Xbox that so happens to have it installed. We've been working on this for a bit as a small little project, it's actually not that complex, and we had about half the work done for us as we found some things that helped lol. We're considering releasing it at some point. All it will need is a patched version which we will release. We might just release it with the skin server and app downloading working, along with the update feature working at least, and then maybe work on the custom map downloading later, we're not sure yet. We're just working on finishing touches at this moment and adjusting some things. Currently thinking about what the domain should be that we host on that we won't need to change. (if only xbox-scene.com was still up, we'd probably ask them nicely if they could host for us as it's a really basic server, uses very little bandwidth lol)
Not a lot of people will use this dashboard or will even bother to use any of these features, but we think it's nice that the servers for it are back at all, and that it's at least available again. You are more than welcome to use the newer dashboards of course. Also if you have any skins on your Xbox that you used with Avalaunch back in the day that you don't think has been put online, consider uploading them or send a message if you're not sure. It would be great and we can add it to the server for download. We've pretty much got the majority of them available but there might be more.

President Bukumirovic Offical Visit to the People's Republic of China; April 1-3, 2034 [Public]
Shortly after General Secretary Hu's visit to Belgrade to assist with the recovery in Serbia after the skirmish in Kosovo, and the recent levying of ascension requirements to Serbia for EU ascension, President Bukumirovic decided it was time for her first international visit since being elected as Serbia's President in 2033. Bukumirovic held back no reservations about her views on the Commission and it's requirements stating, "It was clear to Serbia that the EU was and is primarily interested in political victories, rather than economic development of the continent, and for these reasons, we cannot in good conscience even consider signing away territory to a foreign nation just to join. It is clear, now more than ever before, Serbia's true allies are ones that hold no reservations, or requirements for its partnership, and of course- do not require it to cede very important areas of our national territory to foreign rats." With China, it was really the only one Serbia could turn to, and President Bukumirovic was ready to embrace stronger Chinese influence for significant investment into Serbia's economy, ahead of what is clearly an impending collapse of the EU.

Proposing the Greece-Macedonia-Serbia Prosperity Corridor

After the Budapest-Belgrade-Skopje-Athens Railway as built by China, part of the Belt and Road Initiative was completed, it provided the potential for vast amounts of Chinese goods to enter eastern Europe from the Chinese port in Greece, Piraeus. With Russia and China at odds, and a peaceful future remains unknown for the two nations, certainly for Russia at least, Serbia would like to position itself, along with its Greek and Macedonian colleagues as the 'Gateway to Europe'. With the newfound capacity to ship goods and people, Serbia hopes that most or at least some of the trade to be funnelled into Europe originally through the Russian part of the Belt and Road, could now find a new alternative, with new friends. Naturally, such a proposal would provide new business to Greece, Macedonia, and Serbia, and make great use of their teamsters to truck to the nearby nations, or continue onwards into Europe. The Gateway could be a pivotal achievement for China to maintain its unfettered market access and for these developing nations.

Serbian Telecom. and Electronics Industry

Fact of the matter is, average Serbian income is now half of what China's is, while at the surface it may be very surprising that China's people are wealthier than some Europeans, it is much less surprising when China's meteoric rise is taken into account and how wealthy they have become. China went from working at the factories, to owning them. With the EU, such a crucial market for China, Serbia would serve as a great location to park Chinese businesses to mooch cheaper labor right on the EU doorstep, and build business relations in the country. Serbia is willing to create a tax credit to offset 5% of China's income generated in Serbia with established telecommunications, electronics, and IT enterprises in the country and employing Serbian workers, which is significant as it will effectively make Serbia on par or lower than its neighbors, and all of the EU specifically for Chinese businesses. The credits will last for a period of 6 years, and then will discontinue with possible for renewal depending on performance. In addition, Serbia's Government and companies like Telekom Srbija, are all eager to work with China on a variety of issues in the telecom and electronic industry with an interest in decreasing unemployment while taking advantage of one of Serbia's niche industries. There are large contracts anticipated in Serbia as well, like 5G network establishment, with partnership with Telekom Srbija, it could be a competitive opportunity for companies like Huawei and ZTE to firmly establish a presence and form a good reputation with a European government. Serbia is also very interested in seeing Chinese chip companies take up residency in Serbia's community, which would create promised business with many of Serbia's electronic companies, and utilize top local talent; this could be very beneficial for companies like Yangtze Memory, SMIC, Hua Honh, Zhaoxin, and others. In addition, Serbia is willing to ensure military-grade security for chips sold back to the Chinese military, and intelligence services; and will cooperate with the MSS and PLA to ensure necessary procedures for protection of their IP and secrets are followed in the event they are willing to certify Serbian-lines within the Chinese businesses.

Serbia Reaffirms Commitment to China

In an open press conference with some of China's media members, President Bukumirovic responded to a question regarding Serbia's position on Taiwan, in light of recent similar events effecting Serbia and its relationship with Kosovo. President Bukumirovic stated that, "To continue to ensure Serbia's record is clear and clean on this issue, we reaffirm our commitment to the China-Serbia comprehensive strategic partnership. China's sovereignty is totally indisputable, and we reject calls from our European colleagues to recognize a government in Taipei, and we will not even unofficially establish relations with any government purporting to be China's government, other than the only government here in Beijing. This is a core interest to Serbia and is in line with Serbia's foreign policy. Therefore, we condemn nations like Lithuania that seek closer relations with Taipei at the expense of a valuable partnership with China. Although we do not encourage China to engage in conflict with any entity Taiwan, we recognize that this is an internal issue that China may deal with as it deems necessary, and we will surely support whatever their decisions may be regarding their territories. Whoever may be in charge of Serbia in the future, China will assuredly always find friendship and cooperation with our nation, and that transcends political lines."

Hello, my name is Regal Sadfael, and I am a researcher in the History and Archaeology department in the university of Jeliza. I am also the co-founder of “the Three Weirdos”, an unofficial laboratory that specializes in studying the paranormal. Finally, I also do freelance detective work, mostly interested in paranormal and Magic-related cases.
You may have heard about Magic as this strange force of life that some learned to control, that is fearful and frightening and sometimes even taboo. You may also have heard some horror stories about disfigured mages and killing fields, about how mages are not the one actually in control of magic but are merely puppets in the hands of Demons, about the fact that mages need to leave something of their soul to do Magic, or a bunch of other things that made you fear Magic. Depending on where you live, you may have heard that Magic is reserved to some beings, such as the winged-people, the Annucals, or a happy-few Nobility selected by the Gods. Or, most probably, you may have heard legends and stories of which you don’t believe a single word.
Well, forget everything you think you know, because not all of it is true. Not all of it is false, either.
Let me tell you a bit about Magic, and why it is a force to be reckoned with. Why Magic is so feared in our world, while being also one of the greatest gift made to us.
What exactly is Magic? Magic is a Force that runs through the world. It flows from a dimension parallel to our own, called the Within-world. This dimension is not really a place, but more like a world of ideas and thoughts that coexist with our own, on top of it, parallely. Most people would never interact with the Withinworld and most of the creatures living in the Withinworld would not be aware of us either – as they are beings of pure thoughts, they could not materialise in our world without help either. Mages are, simply speaking, able to draw upon the energy of the Withinworld and exchange it with some of our world’s energy, drawing from either their body, their soul, their spirit or the matter around them. What actually comes from the Withinworld is hard to grasp, and even harder to describe. It is pure abstraction, the power of im-agination, or thoughts, concepts that happen to have aim, they are beings of pure abstraction and will. Some of these entities are very weak, and most of the time they are immediately sucked into whatever spell or hex the Mage is throwing. Sometime they actually have some strength, and use the Mage as much as the Mage is using them – this is the main reason why Magic is a dangerous thing and from these cases come most of the frightening stories you might have heard about Magic. The will of the Mage is pulled from the Withinworld, and woven into reality, but because what comes is so ab-stract, the effect of Magic is actually very dependent on the Mage and their personality.
I identified five main types of Magic, based on what is used to fuel and the type of effect these Mages can at-tain. Each one allows the user to manipulate a force of the world, allowing for four main types of powers. Here is a graphical representation from my latest publication titled “Classifying and un-derstanding the Magical Arts”. (Keep in mind this model is entirely theoretical, and by no means should it be seen as the truth. For other theories, you can refer at the Theory of Magic and Colours (Noriod, Meike et al., 1971) the Numerical Model of Magic (Nollarda, 1976) and at the Energetic Theories of Magic by Zerradnol (1981). An older source with some very interesting concepts is the Alchemy treaties by Qallaravos Norivarios, in the XI century. )

• Hyléomancy uses matter. These mages consume the matter around them to manipulate the force of Chaos and Order. The two powers these mages can use are Neomancy, the magic of change which allows the mage to change or reassemble atoms. Alchemy, sculpture, body modifications are all things you could do with this magic. Catharsis is the magic of destruction. Decay, explosions, chemical reactions…
• Animancy uses the soul. These mage strain their own soul, heir life force, in order to manipulate the force of Life and Death itself. Their two powers are Biomancy, that can either manipulate cells to heal or create illnesses and viruses, and Necromancy that allow to speak to the dead and use their life energy.
• Pnéamancy uses the spirit, these mages are using their emotions, their motivation, their mental force in order to manipulate the forces of Union and Discord. The two themes are either Bond Magic, allowing them to create very a very strong link between atoms or people, creating indestructible matter or groups, or Psychomagic, the magic of reading and manipulating the emotions and the opinions of people by suggestion.
• Somatomancy uses the body. A Mage using these magics would use their force, their muscles, and grow tired like with any physical exercise, in order to manipulate Heat and Cold. Khôramancy is the art of do-ing physical prowesses, by increasing strength or fluidity of movements, and Chronomagc being the art of slowing down time itself.

At the centre of it all lies the power of Stability, but it is still widely unknown and not understood very well. It looks like it is mostly a passive magic, that is linked to understanding, feeling and having an empathetic bond with Magic at a fundamental level, but virtually no records exist as to what this can do or not.
Some examples of things that mages I met during my life can do: - As you may know, the wings of the Annucals are typically too small to sustain flight. The average Annucal may be able to raise above the ground for a second or glide over air for a time, should they jump from a high point, but they don’t really fly. Except for this girl I met, Malkina, who effectively uses her power of Khôramancy to heat up the air currents below herself, as well as increase the span and force of her wings muscles. This allows her to really fly like a bird. Some records seem to mention that Annucals from Tellagis and Köllmer were using this same technique to battle some centuries ago. - Jyuzi is a young sailor, a Commodore of the Boatmen Guild, who uses the same brand of magic to manipulate water currents in the Thousand-Seas. He is employed on a cargo ship, and is using his power to allow his crew to go through difficult passages without much hassle. I saw him with my own eyes manipulate the sea around us, allow-ing our ship to accelerate as if we a strong current was pushing us ahead, while a band of pirates in a fishing boat was lagging behind, fighting against contrary waves. - Vohik is a shaman living on the coasts of Alnaro, and a windspeaker. His Animancy allows him to listen to the winds, telling him about what is happening on his land – they tell him where his herd of sheep are roaming at the moment, and where predators might lurk, they tell where fish shoals are and where to throw his nets, they tell what weather is coming up and when they are carrying rain clouds. - Geirgre is an old creepy guy I don’t really like. He claims to be more than four hundred years old and, quite frankly, looks like it. He showed me once how he could hear the whispering of the deads. This person had been killed three days before, and the police was at loss, but Geirgre was able to ask the corpse who stabbed them and what the circumstances were. He claimed to hear the ghost and had it tell the whole story – the culprit did confirm everything not long after. - My friend Fabios, from the beautiful city-state of Alliance, is a Psychomagus. Psychomagi are a very secretive clan, who have a hand in all pies in the region. Fabios himself is working on behalf of the police. His role is to make sure the people in the interrogation rooms are telling the truth. He is inducing suggestion not to lie to these peo-ple, which usually is strong enough to compel them to tell the truth or, at least, look like crap while they lie. Of course, he is a freelancer and ultimately working for the Psychomagi, meaning that sometimes other interests are at play and he may sometimes receive orders to ensure certain truths remain untold. - One of my regular employers is Alaric Korkeff, the lead scientist from Petal Ltd., the genetic research company. Mr. Korkeff has been working with Magic for quite some time, and experimenting with what it can do. He studies several subjects, analysing how they can shape their body and how Neomagic changes them and their genetic makeup. While I am not clear on the sciencey gibberish, I can tell you that this guy Tunk is quite impressive: his most defining feature is a freakishly long right arm that touches the ground, with greenish skin and long wiry mus-cles. Tunk does not look like much, but his green right arm can break a brick wall with a small push. - My last example is not a person but a place. The Space Temple is very impressive. The mages there, the Tem-porists Monks, have been studing Khôramancy for centuries. Not only can they move fluidly like no other, they also created a network of Portals, all pointing to their temple, giving access to a bunch of different places around the world. In a single corridor of the temple, a row of doors upon doors can give you access to any country you might fancy, this one goes into an office in Kalcot while the one next to it accesses a crack between rocks in the Chain Mountains, or a cellar in Asgamance. One of the High-Temporists works from a corner office in the temple that has two windows on the wall. The one to his right opens on a Sitaa-Daiese beach blowing warm winds with the sooth-ing sound of crashing waves, while the one ahead is showing a stunning view of the frozen moors of Jädet, hun-dreds of kilometers away.
How do I do Magic? In order to use magic, a mage needs several things: - The mage themself, needs to be clear of mind and have received a formal training. Usually years of training are a minimal requirement to be able to use Magic. - A catalyst, acting as a physical bond between the Within and the Magic. - Magical Energy. Depending on the type of magic, it might be fuelled through the body, the mind, the spirit or matter.
This is of course very high-level concepts, and the actual things would vary a lot depending on what is needed. The catalysts can differ from mage to mage. Depending on the area of the world or the need, different tech-niques have been developed. Typically, it will come in the form of Runes, Glyphs or symbols. The way they are done has importance: carving runes or painting glyphs will have subtle differences, even if the magic called upon is simi-lar. This is why it is very rare to see two mages perform the same magic exactly. Some examples of techniques used across the globe: - Catalyst items. Some mages use an object, usually something that have a strong bond with their state of mind or personality, to draw their magic. A stick or a staff, a piece of clothing, a magical weapon, a ring or an accessory... The item would need to be infused with magical symbols and act as a link between the mage and the energies they use to perform magic. - Throwaway items such as clay tablets, playing cards, or grenades. Some mages prefer to have their items be a one-off catalyst, rather than going through the hassle of forming a bond with it. It can be interesting when the ef-fect is dangerous, for example Destruction hexes, or for some cases such as carving runes inside a bottle to make a potion more potent. - Some can carve or draw Runes or power circles directly where they need the magic to happen, be it a place, a room, or a person. Demonists typically draw power circles on the floor, in order to call upon Demons from the Withinworld and use their power. Some mages tattoo magical symbols directly on their own, or somebody else’s, skin.
The steps to do Magic: The first step would be to create a Magical Effect and accumulate the magic. This is typically done by drawing magical symbols. Depending on what Symbols are used and how they are done, the effects can vary: whether the user uses Runes, Glyphs or Kanjis, whether they are carved, drawn or traced, the tool used (a style or a brush, a pen or a quill), the support (clay or paper, stone or skin…) and the medium (ink or blood, melted metal poured in a carving…). This step looks very different from mage to mage, one might spend hours carefully carving a staff and pouring their own blood in the Runes, while another might quickly draw some Kanjis in ink on some pieces of paper to scatter in the wind. The Mage would then need to throw the spell, getting it to perform the effect. This is done through their will only, exchanging something from our world with the Magical energy from the Withinworld. It could be a one-off thing (a clay tablet, carved with Catharsis Runes, would be hidden in the ground and explode like a mine), a more subtle spell (a bracelet carved with Psychomagic Symbols, granting a mage power to read the emotions of the wearer) or even long lasting effects (a storage room where some Runes calling upon Coldness have been carved, staying beyond freezing temperatures for as long as the mage can sustain it).
This is just a very light intro on the vast and complex subject that is Magic. Ask me anything about it.

Hello everyone.
I feel like public enemy number one in my first couple of conversations with lenders because I work as a contractor. I've been working as a contractor for some time, including while overseas, which id another factor which works against me. I enjoy the flexibility and job security hasn't been a huge deal-breaker for me in the past. I've earnt more money than I could have if working in an ongoing role. But even though contracting has worked for me in the past, I'm reconsidering it now.
What lenders seem to care about is ongoing, full-time employment. My employment has been demonstrably stable for the past few years as a contractor, though I do understand completely that at any point I could be out of a job. Indeed, right now, my contract is at high risk of going from five days to three because the work is drying up. It has never bothered me in the past because I just move on to another contract without issue. I've been stably in unstable work for years!
Now, to the important point here. One lender told me, unofficially, that what I could do is get a full-time job, just to secure the mortgage and the property. And after I've got the mortgage and the property, the lender told me I'm not legally obligated to tell them a single thing about my employment status. I could go back to contracting, go work overseas again, or even not work at all - as long as I pay what I need to, that's all that really matters. I'm considering this idea of getting an ongoing full-time job just to secure the property and mortgage, but I don't feel entirely at ease. I'd have to mislead a potential employer and subject them to the admin work of recruitment and onboarding, while knowing that I didn't have any intention of staying in the role. Even if I have nothing to do with them ever again, it still doesn't quite feel right. I'm also considering reaching out to my personal network to see if anyone has a business that could take me on, but just be upfront about the whole thing, and say that it's really just a means to an end and I've got no intention of staying. But even being upfront about it, I still feel a bit uncomfortable.
Was anybody else similarly tempted in a situation like this and is willing to own up to it? If so, how did you resolve it? I've saved diligently and earn good money as a contractor. It's just a bit of a shame that the work can be insecure and also that I worked overseas. I feel like I'm an ideal candidate in a practical sense, which my savings and historical earnings will show. I'm just a little bit trapped by the regulatory environment (for clarity: I completely understand why the regulatory environment is required).
