2023.05.31 19:15 rufusjonz Tautological place names - Mekong River is a rare triple tautonym, Norway has one also
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_tautological_place_names "A place name is tautological if two differently sounding parts of it are synonymous. This often occurs when a name from one language is imported into another and a standard descriptor is added on from the second language. Thus, for example, New Zealand's Mount Maunganui is tautological since "
maunganui" is Māori for "great mountain". "
'Mae' in Thai is an abbreviation for "river", while 'khong' is an old Austroasiatic word for river. Mekong River can thus be translated as "river river river"
Another one:
Nesoddtangen, Norway, a triple tautology, consisting of three parts,
nes,
odd and
tangen, all being synonyms signifying a small cape or promontory.

2023.05.31 13:02 Lehrasap Dear Iranian Friends! This one issue can destroy the Hijab completely (along with the Iranian Regime and the whole of Islam itself). Warning: You will start crying while reading it as it happened with all of us, but stay patient and read it till the end.
Do you know that:
- Hijab in Islam (both Shia / Sunni) was not meant for MODESTY, but only to differentiate between the Free Muslim woman and the Slave woman
- And Shia Imam also kept the breasts of slave women naked (just like Sunni Islam)
Tafsir al-Tabrasi, under the commentary of verse 33:59 (
link):
And regarding the verse, {O Prophet, tell your wives and your daughters and the women of the believers that they should draw down their outer garments over them (Verse 33:59)}, it was said: The women’s veils cover their foreheads and heads when they go out for a need, unlike the female slaves who come out uncovering their heads and foreheads, … and regarding the verse {So that they should be recognised as free women and not be offended (Verse 33:59)}, that is, they are known by their dress that they are free women and not female slaves, so that the people with ill intentions do not hurt them, like they were teasing the female slaves. And sometimes the hypocrites were teasing the free women. And when they (i.e. the hypocrites) were asked about it, they made an excuse that they thought them to be slave women. So, Allah cut off their excuse (through Hijab for the free women, while prohibiting it for the slave women).**More Shia References:**Tafsir by al-Tousi (link)Tafsir al-Safi (link)

سألت أبا عبد الله (ع) عن المملوكة تقنع رأسها إذا صلت؟ قال لا قد كان أبى إذا رأى الخادمة تصلى في مقنعة ضربها لتعرف الحرة من المملوكة“I asked Aba `Abd Allah [al-Sadiq] (as) concerning the possession’s (i.e. the slave women) covering of her head when she prayed? He replied: ‘No! For when my father (i.e. Imam al-Baqir) saw the female servant *praying* with a Muqna (outer garment sheet) on, he *hit* her; so that the free (Muslim woman) can be known from the possession (i.e. slave woman).”
And it is in Man La Yahduruh al-Faqih – the author al-Saduq – [1:373] and Wasail-us-Shia (

ليس على الأمة قناع في الصلاة
“There is no cover for the slave girl during prayer.”
This report is declared “Sahih” by the Grand Ayatullah al-Sayyid Muhammad Sadiq al-Ruhani in Fiqh al-Sadiq [4:228].
In fact, it is narrated in Qadi Nu`man al-Maghribi’s Da`a’im al-Islam [1:177] and al-Nuri’s Mustadrak al-Wasa’il [3:217] that Ja`far al-Sadiq was asked about the permissibility for a slave girl to cover her through Muqna (outer garment sheet) during prayers and he replied (

لا كان أبى رضوان الله عليه إذا رأى أمة تصلى وعليها مقنعة ضربها وقال يا لكع لا تتشبهي بالحرائر
“No, when my father, `alayh as-salam, saw a slave girl praying and she had a Muqna, he hit her! And he said: ‘You rascal! Do not resemble the free women!’”

And Dhimmi woman also has no "Sanctity" (حرمۃ) like the slave woman.

Translation:The holy Prophet said: "There is no Sanctity (حرمۃ) of Dhimmi women (i.e. Non-Muslim woman living in Muslim Country). The hairs and hands of such woman could be seen.
Shia Fiqh: An owner is allowed to separate the slave-wife of his slave, and have sex with her
Just like Sunni Fiqh, in Shia Fiqh too, an owner is allowed to separate the slave-wife of his slave and start doing sex with her after she is free from her first menstruation blood.
Tafsir al-Mizan of Allamah Tabatabai (tafsir of verse 4:24, and those around it -- can be accessed here):It has been narrated in traditions that the owner of a married slave woman may take away that woman from her husband, keep her untouched for the prescribed term, then have sexual relation with her, and thereafter return her to her husband. ۔۔۔ Ibn Muskan has narrated through Abu Basir, from one of the two Imams (a.s.), about the word of Allah: And all married women except those whom your right hands possess, that he said: "They are the women having husbands except those whom your right hands possess. If you have given your slave girl in marriage to your slave boy, you may remove her from him if you so wish." "I said: 'Do you see, if he has given her in marriage to other than his own slave boy?' He said: '(Then) he has no right to remove (her from him) until she is sold away; then if he sells her, her affair is transferred to other than him (i.e, to the buyer); then the buyer may separate (her from her husband) if he so desires, and may reconfirm (the marriage) if he so wishes." (at-Tafsir, al-'Ayyashi)
The same thing is present in these 3 traditions of Al-Kafi:
Al-Kafi, vol.
Chapter on a man who marries his (male) slave to his slave-girl, then desires her (the slave-girl).The three hadith basically say the same thing that Allamah Tabatabai mentioned in his tafsir--that an owner of a slave girl, who is married to his (male) slave, can separate the slave-girl from her husband until she menstruates (or separate her for a period of 40 to 50 days, according to the third hadith), and then can have sexual relations with her. And then she can be returned to her husband (the male slave) without any need to renew their nikah. The gradings of these three Ahadith, according to Allamah Majlisi are: (1) Hasan (i.e. Fair), (2) Sahih (i.e. Authentic and (3) Muwaththaq (i.e. Reliable).
Kitab al-Kafi: Whole chapter about slave women
The most important Hadith book of Shias is Al-Kafi. And it contains a whole chapter regarding slave women, which contains more than a hundred
Ahadith, and all of them are about the worse type of humiliation of slave women.
Shias did translate the whole book of Al-Kafi into English, except for this particular chapter about the humiliation of slave women.
No wonder, they had to show this dishonesty, as these Ahadith about slave women were exposing the Injustice that the so-called Allah did against the poor slave women.
Shias made an excuse (for not translating the chapter about slave women) in the following words (
link):
Chapter 112 to 137:Chapters one hundred twelve to one hundred and thirty-seven deal with issues of slaves and slave-girls, which are not of any practical benefit today and its translation may not be of any benefit as well.
Nevertheless, we are presenting a few traditions (with English Translation) from this chapter of Al-Kafi regarding slave girls, so that you can see for yourself why Shias didn't translate it.
Minor slave girls can be used for driving sexual pleasure by multiple men without any waiting period
Al Kafi – V 5 – The Book of Marriage Ch 112 H 3:
3 - محمد بن يحيى، عن أحمد بن محمد، عن ابن محبوب، عن ابن بكير عن هشام بن الحرث، عن عبد الله بن عمرو قال: قلت لأبي عبد الله أو لأبي جعفر (ع): الجارية يشتريها الرجل وهي لم تدرك أو قد يئست من المحيض؟ قال: فقال: لا بأس بأن لا يستبرئها.
Muhammad Bin Yahya, from Ahmad Bin Muhammad, from Ibn Mahboub, from Ibn Bukeyr, from Hisham Bin Al Haris, from Abdullah Bin Amro who said, ‘I said to Abu Abdullahasws or to Abu Ja’farasws, ‘The slave girl whom the man buys, and she has yet to be an adult, or has despaired from the menstruation’. So, the Imam said: ‘There is no problem if he does not clear her womb (i.e. observe any waiting period before penetrating in her vagina)’.
It practically means, multiple men can drive sexual pleasure from a minor girl (from the age of breastfeeding till the age of 12 when she gets her first menstruation) one by one even in one day, while there is no "waiting period" for her, even if her vagina is penetrated by these multiple men.
According to Shia Fiqh, marrying a minor girl (even if she is breastfed) with the permission of her father, and then driving sexual pleasures is "Halal Allah" (i.e. permissible). This minor girl can be made naked and then her husband can kiss her body, and he is also allowed to do "thighing" (i.e. rubbing their penis in the thighs of that minor girl and ejaculate), or if she is 4 or 5 years old, then he can compel her to masturbate his penis. And if she is 6 or 7 years old, then she can even be penetrated into her vagina if the husband thinks that she is strong enough to bear the penetration.
For details, please read our article:
Islam: Even a breastfed baby girl can be married and used for sexual pleasure. Shia Mujtahideen like Khomeini and Khoi etc. gave this fatwa in the light of the Quran.
The differences are:
- If a minor girl is a "Free person", then his father gives her in Nikah of any man. He does not need any "consent" either from his minor daughter, or of her mother, or of any Islamic court, or society.
- But in the case of a minor "Slave girl", even the consent of the father is also not needed. A rich Muslim can directly buy a minor slave girl from the slave market, and he can drive all kinds of sexual pleasures from her and no one can stop him even if he is a psychopath, and even if he beats and tortures the minor slave girl while raping her.
- And another difference is if the minor girl is a "free person", then only her husband can drive sexual pleasure from her. Nevertheless, if the minor girl is a slave, then the master, along with his brothers or friends (i.e. multiple men) can drive sexual pleasure from her (including penetration in her vagina) in a single day.
Not only a minor girl, but it is also true about a slave woman who does not get any menstruation due to her age (i.e. when she is 45 years old when menstruation stops naturally). Such a slave woman can also be raped by multiple men in a single day one by one, and it is totally Halal Allah (i.e. permissible).
The waiting period for a slave girl is only becoming pure from her menstruation (i.e. 3 to 5 days)
Al Kafi – V 5 – The Book of Marriage Ch 112 H 6:
۔۔۔ وسألته عن رجل اشترى جارية وهي حائض، قال: إذا طهرت فليمسها إن شاء..
He (the narrator) said, ‘And I asked the Imam about a man who bought a slave girl and she was menstruating. He said: ‘When she is pure, then let him touch her if he so desires to’.
Taking all kinds of pleasures except for penetration in her vagina is allowed even before the end of the waiting period
Al Kafi – V 5 – The Book of Marriage Ch 112 H 9:
محمد بن يحيى، عن أحمد بن محمد، عن علي بن الحكم، عن موسى بن بكر، عن زرارة، عن حمران قال: سألت أبا جعفر (ع) عن رجل اشترى أمة هل يصيب منها دون الغشيان ولم يستبرئها؟ قال: نعم‘
I asked Abu Ja’far about a man who bought a slave girl. Can he attain from her besides the overwhelming (copulation), and he has not cleared her womb?’ He said: ‘Yes, when it Obligates her, and she comes to be from his wealth. So, if she were to die, it would be from his wealth’.
Taking pleasure is allowed (except for the vagina) even if the slave woman is pregnant from another man
Al Kafi – V 5 – The Book of Marriage Ch 114 H 5:
محمد بن يحيى، عن أحمد بن محمد، عن ابن فضال، عن ابن بكير، عن زرارة بن أعين قال: سألت أبا جعفر (ع) عن الجارية الحبلى يشتريها الرجل فيصيب منها دون الفرج قال: لا بأس، قلت: فيصيب منها في ذلك؟ قال: تريد تغرة.‘
I asked Abu Ja’far about the pregnant slave girl whom the man buys, so he attains from her besides the private part. He said: ‘There is no problem’. I said, ‘Supposing he attains from her in that (i.e. vagina) too?’ He said: ‘Do you intend deception?’
If a slave woman marries a person without the permission of her master, then it is adultery, while if a male slave marries a woman without permission, then it is not an adultery
Al Kafi – V 5 – The Book of Marriage Ch 118 H 1:
عدة من أصحابنا، عن سهل بن زياد، عن أحمد بن محمد بن أبي نصر البزنطي، عن داود بن الحصين، عن أبي العباس قال: سألت أبا عبد الله (عليه السلام) عن الأمة تتزوج بغير إذن أهلها، قال: يحرم ذلك عليها وهو الزنا‘
I asked Abu Abdullah about the slave girl who gets married without the permission of her owner. He said: ‘It is Prohibited unto her and it would be the adultery’.
Al Kafi – V 5 – The Book of Marriage Ch 117 H 5:
محمد بن إسماعيل، عن الفضل بن شاذان، وعلي بن إبراهيم، عن أبيه، عن ابن أبي عمير، عن عبد الرحمن بن الحجاج، عن منصور بن حازم، عن أبي عبد الله (ع) في مملوك تزوج بغير إذن مولاه أعاص لله؟ قال: عاص لمولاه، قلت: حرام هو؟ قال: ما أزعم أنه حرام وقل له أن لا يفعل إلا بإذن مولاه
(It has been narrated) from Abu Abdullah regarding an owned slave who married without permission from his master, has he disobeyed Allah?’ He said: ‘He disobeyed his master’. I said, ‘Prohibited, is it?’ He said: ‘I do not claim that it is Prohibited, and say to him that he should not do it except with the permission of his master’.
A new master can rape the slave woman after purchase, even if she previously had a husband
Al Kafi – V 5 – The Book of Marriage Ch 121 H 1:
محمد بن إسماعيل، عن الفضل بن شاذان، وأبو علي الأشعري، عن محمد بن عبد الجبار جميعا، عن صفوان بن يحيى، عن ابن مسكان، عن الحسن بن زياد قال: سألت أبا عبد الله (عليه السلام) عن رجل اشترى جارية يطؤها فبلغه أن لها زوجا؟ قال: يطؤها فإن بيعها طلاقها وذلك أنهما لا يقدران على شئ من أمرهما إذا بيعا
I asked Abu Abdullah about a man who bought a slave girl. He slept with her, and (news) reached him that for her is a husband. He said: ‘He can sleep with her, for her sale is her divorce.
Raping a pregnant slave woman with penetration in her vagina, after buying her
Al Kafi – V 5 – The Book of Marriage Ch 126 H 1:
I asked Abu Al-Hassan about a man who bought a pregnant slave girl and her pregnancy had manifested, so he slept with her. He said: ‘Evil is what he has done’. I said, ‘So what are you saying regarding it?’ He said: ‘Is he isolated from her or not?’ I said, ‘Answer me regarding the two aspects’. He said: ‘If he had isolated, so let him fear Allah and he should not repeat (i.e. there is no physical punishment for him), and if he had not isolated from her, so he should not sell that child, and the child would not inherit him, but he should emancipate the child and make something from his wealth to be for the child so that the child can live by, for he had nourished the child with his seed (i.e. semen)’.
Al Kafi – V 5 – The Book of Marriage Ch 126 H 2:
.(It has been narrated) from Abu Abdullah that Rasool-Allah went over to a man from the Helpers, and there was a mother with a large belly arguing. So he asked about her, so he said, ‘I bought her, O Rasool-Allah, and with her was this pregnancy’. He said: ‘Did you go near her?’ He said, ‘Yes’. He said: ‘Emancipate whatever is in her belly’. He said, ‘O Rasool-Allah, with what is emancipation deserved?’ He said: ‘Because your seed nourished his hearing, and his vision, and his flesh, and his blood’.
Therefore, even if he rapes the pregnant slave woman with penetration, still there is no punishment for him.
It happened during the Jihadi wars, where the poor prisoner women were hand-cuffed and then distributed among the Jihadi Muslims, where they were alone with them in their camps during the night. Although it was not allowed to penetrate their vaginas if they previously had husbands, nevertheless, we can better imagine that it was almost impossible for Jihadi Muslims not to penetrate them, while:
- Jihadi Muslims didn't have their wives with them.
- And the prisoner women were handcuffed, and they were alone with them in their tents.
- The upper garments of the poor prisoner women were taken off, and their hair and breasts were made naked, as they were slaves and they were not allowed to resemble the free Muslim women by hiding their hair and their breasts.
- And Jihadi Muslims were allowed to drive sexual pleasures from their bodies (and compel them to masturbate them etc.). So what if any Jihadi lost control over himself and also raped her with penetration in her vagina?
- Please note that the testimony of slaves against their owners was not accepted in Islamic Sharia. Thus, even if the poor prisoner women were raped, still they were not allowed to go to Islamic courts. Thus, nobody could punish the Jihadi for raping the prisoner women with penetration.
Scientific Mistake of Shia Imam/Prophet:
Both Shia Imams/Prophet and Sunni Prophet (i.e. Muhammad) made a huge scientific mistake as they thought similarly, like the people of Jahiliyyah (i.e. the time of ignorance), that the semen of another person can indeed nourish the fetus. And due to this huge scientific mistake, both the Shias and the Sunnis put an extra burden upon the poor divorced/widow pregnant woman and prohibited them from marrying another person until the delivery of the fetus. A woman needs a lot of love and care and financial support during her pregnancy, and the only way for a divorced/widowed pregnant woman to get all these things is to marry another man. But Islam again oppressed the poor divorced/widow pregnant women in this case, by imposing unnecessarily the hardships of the waiting period upon them and taking away the chance from them to have the love, care and support of another man during their pregnancy.
The Evil of "Separating the child from the slave mother, and selling in the market" in Shia Islam:
Just like Sunni Islam, Shia Islam also allows the owner to separate the child from the slave mother and then sell the child in the Bazar of Slavery. Just look at this hadith, where the Shia Imam is asking the owner to not to sell the child. This means, if the owner had not penetrated the vagina of the pregnant slave mother, then he would have all the right to sell the child in the slave market.
Therefore, it was actually a blessing for the child if the owner raped his/her slave mother with penetration in her vagina. It became a reason for the freedom of the child, and his good luck that he/she would not be separated from his/her mother and sold in the slave market.
The Evil of "Slavery By Birth" in Shia Islam:
Just like Sunni Islam (
link), Shia Islam also has the same evil of "
slavery by birth". The child of a slave woman, who is not from the owner, he/she will be automatically born as a slave to the owner of the slave woman.
For example, if she was pregnant from the earlier owner (as in the above-mentioned hadith), or if her master marries her to another free Muslim man, or to any of his slaves, then the children from such a union will automatically be born as slaves to the owner of the slave woman.
A child from a slave woman can only be free if the owner himself rapes the slave woman, and then his own child is born, then that child will be free.
In the Quran, it was "discouraged" that a free man does Nikah with a slave woman of any other person. And the reason behind this is, the children of that free Muslim men will automatically born as slaves of the owner of the slave mother.
Quran
4:25:
And whoever among you has not within his power ampleness of means to marry free believing women, then (he may marry) of those whom your right hands possess from among your believing maidens; and Allah knows best your faith: you are (sprung) the one from the other; so marry them with the permission of their masters ... This (permission of marrying a slave woman) is (only) for him among you who fears falling into evil; and that if you abstain (from marrying a slave woman) is better for you (while your children will be automatically born as slaves), and Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.
All Shia Muffasirin and Fuqaha (jurists) are unanimous on this. Allamah Tabatabai wrote under the commentary of this verse 4:25 (
link):
However, abstinence and patience is better (than marrying the slave women), in any case. If it indicates abstaining from marrying slave girls, it is because of the rights their masters have on them and on their offspring — as described in books of jurisprudence.
Note:
An 'Akhbari Shia Website' (that doesn't follow Shia Mujtahidden, but only Shia traditions) in fact translated this chapter into English. You can read all these Ahadith here (
link). Please start from reading page 31 to read all these Ahadith, which are humiliating and discriminate against the poor slave women in the worst possible way.
Excuse from Shia Apologists: These Ahadith are not 'authentic' and against 'The Quran'
As usual, Shia apologists came, and they claimed that these Ahadith about slavery are not 'authentic', and they are also against the Quran.
But we ask them that:
- Please tell us the verses of the Quran which are against these Ahadith.
- The Quran is a thick book. But this thick book is only filled with boasting and self-praise of Allah, or with the cursing of opponents, and promising them hellfire, or some old stories.
- Nevertheless, when it comes to important issues, like Human Rights, then the Quran is empty of them.
- The writer of the Quran knew very well about the sufferings of the slave women (even of those who could happen to them in the future). But still, he didn't reveal any direct verses about their human rights in that big thick book i.e. the Quran. Why?
- There are only a few verses about slave women, which tell only that Muslim masters have the full right to have sex with them.
Therefore, if Shia Muslim apologists claim that ALL these Ahadith are weak, then we ask them why the writer of the Quran didn't reveal the human rights of slave women in the Quran, which could have saved them from these sufferings.
As far as these Shia Ahadith are concerned, then please note that:
- Sahih Ahadith is a small issue, we have here "Mutawati" (متواتر, Mutawātir; meaning: successive) Shia Ahadith, whose numbers are above hundred (alone in al-Kafi there are more than 50 Ahadith present), which are openly telling about the exploitation and slave women. They are telling only **one-**sided things like owners are allowed to rape their slave women without their consent. They are telling only that owners can also hand them over to their brothers and slave (without their consent). They are telling only this how multiple men can rape them in a such TEMPORARY sexual relationship. They are telling only that owner can sell the children from his slaves in the slave markets without their consent etc.
- This means, there exists not even a SINGLE Shia Hadith, which refutes them and tells contrary to them. There is not even a SINGLE Shia Hadith which tells that slave women have to take Hijab when they are not working, or they have to cover their naked breasts in public. There is not even a SINGLE Shia Hadith present which claims that owners cannot compel their slave women not to sleep with his brothers/slaves in temporary sexual relationships etc.
Today, these Shia apologists want to declare these tons of Shia Ahadith to be weak, but the reality is, this is the 1300 years long history of Islam (both Shia and Sunni) where slave women were prohibited from taking Hijab, where breasts were kept naked, where they were raped by multiple Muslim men, where their children were taken away from them and sold in the slave markets etc.
How are you going to deny this 1300 years long history of your Shia and Sunni Islam now (due to which millions of poor slave women suffered badly), by making the lame excuse of Weak Ahadith?
Please also read our article about Slavery in Sunni Islam too:
Even if you are a Shia, we request you to please still read our article about slavery in Sunni Islam too, while it has 5 times more material than the Shia article, and you will find a lot more evils of Islamic Slavery there.
Sunni Islam: Hijab is not 'modesty', as Islam prohibited the Slave-Women to take Hijab or even to cover their naked breasts in public submitted by

2023.05.24 21:18 Joadzilla Tina Turner: legendary rock’n’roll singer dies aged 83
Turner, who initially found fame in a turbulent musical partnership, became one of the biggest acts in the world as a solo artist and one of the defining pop icons of the 1980s
https://www.theguardian.com/music/2023/may/24/tina-turner-legendary-rocknroll-singer-dies-aged-83
Tina Turner, the pioneering rock’n’roll star who became a pop behemoth in the 1980s, has died aged age of 83 after a long illness.
She had suffered ill health in recent years, being diagnosed with intestinal cancer in 2016 and having a kidney transplant in 2017.
Turner affirmed and amplified Black women’s formative stake in rock’n’roll, defining that era of music to the extent that Mick Jagger admitted to taking inspiration from her high-kicking, energetic live performances for his stage persona. After two decades of working with her abusive husband, Ike Turner, she struck out alone and – after a few false starts – became one of the defining pop icons of the 1980s with the album Private Dancer. Her life was chronicled in three memoirs, a biopic, a jukebox musical, and in 2021, the acclaimed documentary film, Tina.
In a statement on Wednesday night, a representative said: “Tina Turner, the ‘Queen of Rock’n Roll’ has died peacefully today at the age of 83 after a long illness in her home in Kusnacht near Zurich, Switzerland. With her, the world loses a music legend and a role model.”
In 2018, scholar Daphne A Brooks wrote for the Guardian: “Turner’s musical character has always been a charged combination of mystery as well as light, melancholy mixed with a ferocious vitality that often flirted with danger.”
Turner was born Anna Mae Bullock on 26 November 1939 and raised in Nutbush, Tennessee, where she recalled picking cotton with her family as a child. She sang in the tiny town’s church choir, and as a teenager talked – or rather, sang – her way into Ike’s band in St Louis: he had declined her request to join until he heard her seize the microphone during a Kings of Rhythm performance for a rendition of BB King’s You Know I Love You.
After her vocal talents became apparent, Ike gave her the name Tina Turner – and trademarked it in case she left him and he wanted to replace her in his act. He quickly became abusive: when Turner tried to leave the group early on after having got a sense of his mercurial character, he hit her with a wooden shoe stretcher.
“My relationship with Ike was doomed the day he figured out I was going to be his moneymaker,” Turner wrote in her 2018 biography My Love Story. “He needed to control me, economically and psychologically, so I could never leave him.”
She made her recorded debut under the name with the Ike and Tina Turner single A Fool in Love in July 1960, which broke the US Top 30 and started a run of respectable chart success. But it was their live performances that made them a sensation. Ike toured the Ike and Tina Turner Revue aggressively on the Chitlin’ Circuit – including in front of desegregated audiences, such was their commercial power. In 1964, they signed to Warner Bros imprint Loma Records, which released their first album to chart: Live! The Ike & Tina Turner Show.
In the second half of the 60s, the duo were courted by many of rock’s biggest names. Phil Spector produced the 1966 single River Deep – Mountain High; they supported the Rolling Stones in the UK and later the US, and stars including David Bowie, Sly Stone, Cher, Elvis Presley and Elton John came to their Las Vegas residency.
They were a chart-making, Grammy-winning force in the 1970s – a run that came to an end when Turner left Ike, who had been consistently violent and unfaithful, in 1976. Her last single with the group was Baby, Get It On, from the 1975 film adaptation of the Who’s rock opera Tommy, in which she starred as Acid Queen, a character of the same name of her second solo album.
In the divorce, finalised in 1978, Turner came away with just two cars and the rights to her stage name. “Ike fought a little bit because he knew what I would do with it,” she said in the documentary Tina.
Turner, who had already released two solo records continued pursuing a solo career, though it would take until she released her fifth album, 1984’s Private Dancer, for her to supplant the old image of the shimmying rock’n’roller – and escape premature relegation to the oldies circuit – with one of a powerful, mullet-sporting, leather-clad pop icon.
In the documentary Tina, she described Private Dancer as her debut. “I don’t consider it a comeback,” she said. “Tina had never arrived.”
Turner credited Buddhism and particularly the practice of chanting with positively affecting her life in the 1980s. Outside music, she starred in Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome opposite Mel Gibson in 1985. She published her first memoir, the global bestseller I, Tina, in 1986, which was later adapted in to the 1993 film What’s Love Got to Do With It? starring Angela Bassett as Turner. In 1995, she sang the theme tune to the James Bond film GoldenEye.
Turner announced her retirement in 2000, a year after releasing her final solo album, Twenty Four Seven, though she would return to the stage in 2008, performing at the Grammy awards with Beyoncé, and for a final tour to mark 50 years of her career.
That was conclusively the end. “I was just tired of singing and making everybody happy,” she told the New York Times in 2019. “That’s all I’d ever done in my life.”
Turner collaborated on the musical Tina with Phyllida Lloyd, which premiered in 2018 and won Laurence Olivier and Tony awards for its respective West End and Broadway runs. “This musical is not about my stardom,” Turner said of the production. “It is about the journey I took to get there. Each night I want audiences to take away from the theatre that you can turn poison into medicine.”
Turner often said she did not relate to the “invincible” persona that others put on her. “I don’t necessarily want to be a ‘strong’ person,” she told the New York Times. “I had a terrible life. I just kept going. You just keep going, and you hope that something will come.”
In 2020, a remix of her 1984 hit What’s Love Got to Do With It? by the Norwegian producer Kygo made Turner the first artist to have a UK Top 40 hit in seven consecutive decades. In 2021, she was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a solo artist, 30 years after Ike and Tina Turner’s induction.
Turner is survived by her second husband, German music executive Erwin Bach. They married in July 2013 after 27 years together and lived in Switzerland. In 2013, Turner renounced her US citizenship to become a Swiss citizen.
Her first child, Craig Raymond Turner, died in July 2018. Last year, Turner said that following her other son Ronnie’s death at the age of 62 that he “left the world far too early”. She is survived by two of Ike Turner’s sons, Ike Turner Jr and Michael Turner, whom she adopted.
In 2020, Turner told the Guardian that despite having some serious health problems, the last 10 years of her life had embodied her ideal vision of happiness.
“True and lasting happiness comes from having an unshakeable, hopeful spirit that can shine, no matter what,” she said. “That’s what I’ve achieved, and it is my greatest wish to help others become truly happy as well.”

2023.05.23 15:10 blackkettle Five Week Trip Report: April-May; Kansai, Kanto; Previous long-term resident family
Preamble:
We are a family of three. I previously lived in Japan for about 10 years. My wife is Japanese from the Kansai region, and we have a 6 year old son born and raised abroad, but who speaks/reads/writes Japanese at a native or near-native level for his age. My wife and son traveled back to Osaka several times during Covid, but I did not join them due to the additional logistics requirements at the time, and the sense that it would not be particularly enjoyable. Prior to covid we would typically spend about 4-5 weeks a year in Japan, but this was our first long day-in-the-life trip together in the past four years.
It was a phenomenal trip, and I wanted share what we did. Our trip is probably a little bit unconventional compared to most of the reports here as we all speak Japanese and are very familiar with Japan having lived there for quite some time in the past. Our main goals for our trip were to provide our son with immersion opportunities, to meet family, and to visit with old friends. We lived for many years in both Osaka and Tokyo and I have relatives in Shizuoka. We also love craft beer, games, and quirky museums; I think our trip itinerary reflects all of this.
General Pre-trip Preparation:
Our son is a second-year kindergartener in Zurich, Switzerland, but he also speaks Japanese and attends a Japanese school part time. He's very outgoing and enjoys new adventures (probably because we have been dragging him around to San Diego or Osaka almost every year for most of his life). This year we thought it would be interesting if he could experience a real Japanese elementary school during our stay. To this end about 2 months before we left, my wife contacted the local elementary school near her parents house in Osaka and inquired about the possibility of doing a short 'study abroad' (体験留学) at some point during our stay. To our surprise she received a prompt reply from the school principal, who was very enthusiastic about the prospect, and happy to arrange all the details upon our arrival. Apparently he had previously worked at an international school and had a very positive outlook on this sort of interaction. Final details were to be determined on site in a short family interview in order to get a sense of our son's Japanese ability and disposition.
We typically spend our long-term stays with our relatives but this time we decided to break our trip up into several stages: Osaka at Home, Osaka at Large, Return to Tokyo, Shizuoka, Osaka at home. The remainder of the report is broken up accordingly.
Part 1: Osaka-at-Home I.
The first week we flew in to Osaka KIX from Zurich via Seoul, and took the Hello Kitty Express :-) directly into Umeda where we met up with family and went straight to a Yakiniku experience at
Yakiniku Toraji on the B2 floor of the Lucua building at Umeda. At first we planned to make the journey home to drop off our luggage but after we realized that the airport express now drops you off at essentially the Lucua B1, we decided to just head straight to dinner. Needless to say, it was epic. We grabbed some bread and pastries for the following morning and headed home with mom and dad.
GENERAL ANECDOTES: Masks; Even on first arrival it was clear that we made the right decision to come after the covid restrictions finally lifted. Everything was open, and people were out. Roughly 90+% of people were still wearing masks everywhere, but this percentage steadily declined over the duration of our stay to, I would say, 65%-70% by the time we left on May 20th. We chose not to wear them, and my MIL/FIL were also not wearing them. At no point during the trip did I feel there was any concern about this in either direction. Anyone traveling in the near future should feel completely free to go whichever way you prefer.
During the first week we sorted out our jet lag, and spent a lot of time roaming around conbinis and the supermarkets remembering all the little delicious nothings that Japan has to offer. We stayed with mom and dad in Ebie, Fukushima, right on Yodogawa. This is about 5 min bike ride from Nodahanshin station, and 10-15min ride to Fukushima station or Umeda. We made all these rides many times during our stay! We made some mellow probing adventures:
Prepaid SIMs. I still have to answer emails and typically work on-and-off during these trips. One of the reasons we are able to do it is because I work in IT. This means it's always important to get a good prepaid SIM. On my last visit, four years ago I was able to find a great deal on a prepaid SIM at Yodobashi in Umeda, so one of my first orders of business was to repeat that experience this time. However after discussing with the sales and purchasing a SIM with 50GB for 1mo @ Y8000, I found out that it did not permit tethering. This was stated as a 'possibility' in the fine print and when I asked at purchase time the sales person said they couldn't guarantee it but thought it should work. I gambled and lost. This was quite annoying given the main purpose of purchasing a high volume prepaid SIM was for tethering to my laptop. Anyway as a result I discovered the eSIM tech which was also supported by my iPhone 14. I ended up buying another eSIM plan using Ubigi and this worked great and supported tethering without issue throughout my trip. It also worked great for our short return stop in South Korea. I'll never go back to prepaid physical SIMs and I still cannot believe that Docomo is still blocking tethering in 2023. Completely ridiculous.
Exercise: I am an avid swimmer and cyclist. Since we typically stay for around 1 month I like to be able to continue my swim workouts while we are in Japan. Cycling isn't a problem since we end up biking and walking all over the country anyway. I always join the
Konami Sports Club network for 1 month as a regular member the first day we arrive. They provide a bunch of different plans and most of the Type III and Type IV gyms in the network have a 25SCM lap pool. If you join the network you can use any of facilities anywhere in the country, which is great if you spend time in more than one city. The Type III and Type IV facilities all have really great bath house areas as well, with multiple sento-style baths and usually a big sauna. You need to make sure that you join and quit on the same day (or at least in the same week) so that your membership will be properly cancelled at the end of the first billing cycle. This might be tough if you don't speak Japanese well, but if you do the staff is super accommodating and will definitely help you make it happen. In addition to the exercise, one thing I really like about doing this is that it gives me another day-in-the-life experience; it's like living there again; doing things that locals do. The Kitahama facility in Osaka is particularly nice; It's a new one and it's my favorite.
Internet Cafes: I worked on and off during the trip and usually do work days at local internet cafes. The three I liked best during this trip were:
- Brooklyn Coffee Namba : Big spacious area with lots of sockets and reasonably fast free wifi if you don't have a SIM (or don't have one that supports tethering...). It's really dedicated to remote work so there is zero pressure to leave. You can spend the whole day working there with a couple cups of coffee and no one will bug you. The only downside is that it is a bit of trek from Namba station.
- Brooklyn Coffee Kitahama : Same chain as above. This one is smaller, but has a similar vibe. It's right on the river which makes for a cool view. It's closer to the station but I definitely prefer the Namba shop.
- Starbucks Umeda MeRise : This is a pretty sweet Starbucks that is much more 'devoted' to remote work than most. They have a 'startup' area on the second floor, loads of seats, loads of plugs and a solid wifi connection. It's a hop skip and a jump from Umeda which also makes it convenient. Starbucks Japan still offers the one-more-coffee receipts which is a great bonus here. You can get a second cup of cold brew or hot coffee for about Y180 in the same size as the first one you purchase.
Cycling: We keep a couple of momma-charis at my in-laws place, including one with a kid-seat on the back. We did plenty of riding and my son loves the unique-to-him experience of riding on the back of the bike. We considered getting him his own bike this year, but eventually decided against it due to the complex traffic. Osaka is pretty easy to get around in by bicycle in terms of terrain - there are very few hills in the city proper, however the traffic is a little bit gnarly. Midosuji street is a great example of this. It runs in a mostly straight line from Umeda/Osaka station, across Oebashi and Yodobashi past Osaka city hall, and down through Dotonbori to Namba. It's a cool little ride if you have the time and inclination and it is mostly flat. It runs only in one direction for most of this length however many Japanese cyclists seem to not be aware of this fact. I was surprised/amazed/terrified by how many people I encountered riding against the flow of traffic on this quite busy street. Plenty of mama-charis with kids on back as well. It's pretty chaotic and not for the faint of heart! That said I enjoy the rides and the people watching and the adventure that a little chaos can provide as long as you keep your eyes open.
--------------------------------------------------
LOCATIONS, FOOD AND ADVENTURES - Osaka Kids Plaza : We made a solid day of visiting Osaka Kids Plaza. This place is great if you have 3-8 year olds and want to find something to do with them, especially on a rainy day. In past years we have also visited KidoKido Bornelund in Grand Front Umeda, but at 6 our son seemed to have outgrown it this time around. Osaka Kids Plaza was still plenty of fun.
- Yakitori Masaya: We looove all Japanese food and Yakitori is no exception. We usually visit the local Torikizoku but it was their day off so we tried this new place in Fukushima. It didn't disappoint.
- Honmachi Seimenjo Ten: I love cold bukkake udon and sanuki udon. This place in Lucua is pretty passable, easy access and great value for money. It's definitely not as good as Tokyo Mentsudan in Shinjuku, Tokyo - which is absolutely banging - but it was a good first taste.
- Round 1 Stadium Sennichimae : My son has started to enjoy gaming and I wanted to explore this with him so we dedicated our first father-son adventure day of the trip to a large game center - the likes of which simply do not exist in either Switzerland or the US. Needless to say it was a massive hit. They have plenty of Mario Kart, Densha de Go, and Taiko no Tatsujin (our favorites) as well as bowling, pool, gokarts and more. Of course there are also oodles of crane games to waste your money on as well. After the game center we walked for Ramen near Namba:
- Namba Ramen Ichiza this place is pretty much brand new from the look of it. It has a slew of different ramen shops and all they all looked delicious. We visited twice after the first success. There are many tourist oriented ramen shops in the shotengai in dontonburi and sennichimae, but IMO this was a much better experience. We found it because my son wasn't into the crowded dark vibe in the shops below. This place was well-lit and spacious, and the shops readily provided kid utensils and smaller tori-zara so that I could scoop more reasonable portions for him. It's also right next to Namba station.
- Edion Namba Kids Park : the Edion building with the Ramen Park on the 9F also has a huge toys, models, and kids park on 7F. We visited this before heading home. They have a big games section, a Bandai section, a very large Plarail and Tomika section, and a great Lego section. Super fun to browse; plenty of open stuff for the kids to play with too.
- Osaka Castle park: We roamed the park a bit then had lunch at the little Ramen park in the Castle Terrace area adjacent to Osakajokoen. The weather was nice and the back area of the ramen park has a great view of Osaka castle. After that we took the tourist road train that runs around the park and road it up to the last stop right in front of Osaka castle. There is always a lot of commentary about walking in this sub; if you don't want to walk all the way through the park for whatever reason, the little road train is a great option. You still have to climb maybe 4 floors worth of steps to get to the castle entrance, but the train gets you pretty close. In the end we decided not to go into the castle since the line was looking pretty long and we've been multiple times before. We ate some jihanki ice cream in the main plaza under the castle. After that we hiked back down to exit via the Otemon gate and made a quick stop at my wife's alma mater Osaka Otemae High School before hopping a bus headed towards Kitahama and eventually back home.

BEER As I mentioned, we love craft beer, and we particularly love Hazy IPAs in all their various forms. We made it a point in this trip to explore this aspect of Japan as it seems to have really exploded in popularity since our last visit. We followed (hazy_mmy)[
https://www.instagram.com/hazy_mmy/?hl=en] for some great ideas outside the brewpubs.
- Lucua Craft Beer Market: This place has been around for several years, and is still going pretty strong. It features a lot of interesting IPAs, Stouts, Sours, and standard Pilsners and Pale Ales. They usually have a Hazy or two on tap as well. There is an unrelated beer and wine shop on the same floor that has a great selection of IPA and Hazy IPA cans as well.
- Ape Brewing: One of our first craft beer explorations of the trip was Ape Brewing. These guys just got started and we got to meet their brew master and taste some awesome brews. Food is great and the ambiance was great too; there's bar seating and nice views of those shiny vats if you're into that sort of thing. They were also very child friendly (as were I think all the spots we hit this time) and had plenty of soda and juice and non-alcoholic drinks.
- Yellow Ape Craft : Ape Brewing is an offshoot of the Yellow Ape Craft brew pub which we had visited on previous trips. It's also located in Kitahama, nearer to the station, and has a more general, different array of craft beers as well as a different menu. We ended up turning our Kitahama visit into a mini pub crawl and stopped off at this spot on the way home as well. It didn't disappoint.
We wrapped up this mini pub crawl with a walk through the Kitahama/Yodoyabashi area in the evening. This is more of business district but it actually has some interesting novel historical sites. There are a number of cool Meiji Era buildings with large explanatory placards. These are predominantly in Japanese and maybe a bit obscure, and you also won't be able to enter most of them, but if you are into this sort of thing it's can be a fun bonus. I'm guessing google translate in photo mode can get you most of the way through the placards:
there are a bunch more, these just happen to be the ones that caught our eye as we passed by on our mini pub crawl.
Part 2. Osaka-at-Large
We spent roughly our first two weeks in Osaka, but in order to get a change of pace and give our family a break, we opted to spend the second week in an apartment-hotel near Umeda. This was a great decision and a lot of fun. We were able to host friends, had even better access to Umeda and could relax and enjoy the city from a fresh angle.
We spent 7 nights in the rooftop luxury suite at
Minn Kita Umeda and it was epic. My wife booked this about 6 months in advance and it was worth every last yen. The room was spacious and quiet with two large comfy beds. The bathroom included a deep Japanese style bath. There is a large rooftop deck with a jacuzzi overlooking Lucua/Umeda/Osaka station. This view at night was phenomenal. At present there is also a ton of highrise construction going on behind Grand Front which my son got a kick out of (and me too). The apartment has a large kitchen and living room space as well, and we used it to host some visits from friends.
--------------------------------------------------
LOCATIONS, FOOD AND ADVENTURES I ended up working most of this week so we only managed one major adventure.
- SpaWorld Osaka: Onsen from around the world. This was probably the one experience I would categorize as a strong do-not-recommend. My son and I were looking for another adventure day target and settled on an onsen adventure. I've been to Oedo Onsen Monogatari a couple of times and there is also a new one in Osaka city: Solaniwa Onsen but for some reason we picked Spa World. It is located about 5min walk from Dobutsuen-Mae station. This area is basically skid row; my wife and MIL warned me, but I didn't really believe them since I've never seen any truly 'run down' area of Japan. This area was hilariously decrepit and I got a lot of I-told-you-so's after we got back. Spa World itself is somewhat OK. The facility is pretty clean and the baths are relatively well kept. However the water-park area on the top floor was honestly pretty gross. We floated around the lazy river quite a few times; but it was more like a gross, overly warm moat. There was a kiddy slide area but it was not particularly great and had a bunch of really hard surfaces in the play areas that were not kind. There were a couple of pretty cool looking tandem water slides but they had a scale and a weight-differential requirement of 'no more than 20kg'. Unfortunately for us I'm 6'3", 92kg and my son is a gangly 6 year old weighing in at 21kg. They took one look at us and didn't even bother with the scale. The kicker here however was the bathroom. Right before we left to go down to the sento area, I used the mens room and it was absolutely filthy. The mens urinals had a high wooden shelf which is probably not visible to 95% of Japanese visitors but as I mentioned, I'm pretty tall. I could see this thing and it was not only absolutely filthy but crawling with little black bugs. I just about retched and headed out immediately afterwards. The Spas of the World on the floor below was in much better shape. It was clean and good fun; we visited Greece and Spain and Italy :-) and finally headed home. My son had a great time and I would have classified it as 'OK' if not for the bathroom experience which was just unbelievable. In retrospect I honestly should have reported it. As it stands I'd give it a hard NOT recommended; Oedo Onsen or Solaniwa should be much better bets.
- Hep5 Ferris Wheel: We've ridden this a few times in the day but never before at night. It was pretty cool and gives you a nice long view of the city from all angles. The contrast between the Osaka city night and Zurich is pretty extreme! My only minor complaint was that they had some kind of Care Bear theme going on an there was a large temporary Care Bear decal on the side of the car which obstructed part of the view.
- Shuns Kushiage, Kushikatsu: We also love kushiage/kshikatsu and we ate a ton on this trip. One of our favorite haunts is Shuns on 10F Lucua.
- Curry House CoCo Ichibanya: I also love Japanese style curry and CoCo Ichibanya. This is standard chain that can be found throughout Japan. They serve a bunch of Japanese style curry rice and you can customize them with things like tonkatsu, hirekatsu, sausage, cheese, etc. You can also customize the spice level and it goes up to seriously spicy which is sometimes tough to find in Japan!
- Pause Coffee: This little hole in the wall coffee shop is located just next to the Minn apartment hotel we were staying at. It was always packed with locals and made great coffee and great sweets.
- Craft Burger Co. : Solid burgers and some good craft beers on tap. They also had sliders that were perfectly sized for a 6 year old. We visited the Dojima shop. This wasn't the best burger we had, but it was definitely tasty and worth a visit if you like burgers and are in the area.
- Saien Yakiniku : This is a little hole in the wall yakiniku place that we've been visiting for over 20 years. It's good and we always visit at least once, but the biggest reason for this that we know the owner and it's a family tradition dating back to my wife's childhood. Their 'aji kurabe' (taste comparison plate) is pretty good though and comes with a selection of beef from every major region of Japan.
BEER - Yellow Ape Craft: TheBottleShop & Kitchen: This was the final installation in the Yellow Ape franchise, also located in the Kitahama area. This one was really cool in that they have a self-serve tap setup using IC cards. The staff hands you an IC card when they seat you, and you can order food as normal. But the taps are all installed in a public facing wall on the opposite end of the pub and you pour your own beer by inserting your IC card into the reader above the tap. It then records your pour by the ml and charges you sort of like a gas station. I'd never seen this before and visited it with a friend, and later again with the family. It was pretty fun. They also have a few games and a rubiks cube if you're into that. They also have plenty of bottles for takeaway and had 3-4 Hazy IPAs on tap when we visited.
- Drunk Bears Osaka: This place has deep dish pizza and we were hoping it could compare with DevilCraft. The pizza was OK but the beer lineup ended up being pretty subpar.
Part 3. Return to Tokyo
For our third week we returned to Tokyo to visit old haunts and old friends, and take in the even bigger city. We headed up early on the Nozomi shinkansen after checking out of the Minn. We bought bento in Shin Osaka station and our son picked out a shinkansen shaped
Ekiben box to bring back for school lunches.
We previously lived for about 7 years in Jiyugaoka, and planned to spend time there meeting friends, but we decided to stay in an area we were less familiar with in order to get a fresh perspective on the city. We spent 6 nights at the
Blossom Hotel Hibiya which is about 5 min walk from Shimbashi station. It's a highrise with the hotel on the top. We had a room facing Tokyo Tower with a great view. The rooms themselves were clean and comfy with the external wall composed of a single huge bay window. The city scape was amazing night and day.
I ended up having to put out fires at work again during this week even though I had tried to take it off, and this put a little bit of a damper on some exploration plans, but we still managed to see all our friends and make a go of the time. Also since we already spent almost 10 years in Tokyo altogether, we didn't feel nearly as pressured to check out multiple tourist sites and focused on eating, drinking, and meeting with friends.
--------------------------------------------------
LOCATIONS, FOOD AND ADVENTURES - Poop Museum Tokyo: This place was absolutely bonkers. My wife found it randomly and jokingly suggested that we should check it out. We wandered around Odaiba and visited. There was a huge line. My wife opted to go shopping but my son and I decided we couldn't pass up this opportunity. It was bizarre, hilarious and entertaining and well worth the entry fee. The highlights including a fuzzy mechatronic Poop-animal petting zoo, an Unko speech recognition game where screaming 'unko' (poo) resulted in a poo tower visualization with size corresponding to the volume of your scream - this was then aligned with a landmark of corresponding size for reference, e.g., the Eiffel Tower. There were also various games and photo ops with cute poo and you receive a poo on a stick as a souvenir. Just a bizarre unique experience.
- Tokyo Tower: We climbed Tokyo tower with friends on a beautiful starry night. It was great. I had hoped to climb the stairs but we were too late. There was a special lighting arrangement related to Golden Week which we managed to catch. The view is great but the tower is now almost entirely surrounded by gigantic Mori office skyscrapers that are as tall or taller than the lower viewing platform!
- Tokyo Sky Tree: We also climbed the Sky Tree on another day. This was fun too. It's way higher, but it's almost so high that the features of the city are a bit obscured. I'm glad we did it and checked it off, but I kind of preferred Tokyo Tower in the end.
- GiGO Akihabara 1: With my son newly addicted to Game Centers, we couldn't pass up a chance to visit Akihabara :-)! We made a trip to the GiGO centers. This was a lot of fun. There are five installations, but we focused on 1 and 3. One was definitely the best. We found our favorite games: Mario Kart and Taikou Tatsujin, and also found a top floor packed with 80s and 90s hits, many with co-op options. We spent a few hours here trying as much as we could. Taikou Tatsujin was particularly fun as there were a couple of absolute masters just ripping apart the drums, yet still kind enough to take a break after 10min or so and let us get in a round of easy-level Tonari no Totoro. One thing I noticed was that there were a lot of tourists that seemed to want to try some of the games but had a lot of difficulty with the Japanese only interfaces and writing.
- Jiyuugaoka: As I mentioned, we lived in Jiyuugaoka for about 7 years so we made sure to return and spend a day wandering around and wallowing in nostalgia. I don't have anything in particular to say about it; it's just a nice area to wander and hang out. Plenty of good food and shopping, more relaxed than many areas of Tokyo.
- Akamon): I had planned to go back and visit my old lab here, but unfortunately time did not permit. The Todai Hongo campus is definitely worth a visit though. There are some good eats and it's an easy walk through the campus to Ueno.
- Karaoke-kan: We made one karaoke stop for old time's sake. This particular place in shimbashi is not notable; just part of a chain, but I think Japanese style karaoke is worth trying once, especially if you are only familiar with the western approach.
- Shu Shimbashi: We had a nice group dinner at Shu in Shimbashi. Pretty standard izakaya style fare but reasonably priced and tasty enough.
- Henry's Burger Jiyuugaoka: Great burgers and a nice rooftop area for eating. It's a 5 min walk from Jiyuugaoka station. It also has some nice craft beer that you can add to a set menu.
- Nantahama Jiyuugaoka: This is an amazing little Okinawa style izakaya that has been run by the same family in the same spot for the last 50 years. When we lived here we visited it regularly. Food and ambience is great and the family that runs it is very friendly.
- Mujaki Ramen Jiyuugaoka: Amazing ramen. Amazing.
- Clann Irish Pub Jiyuugaoka: Great little Irish pub with a friendly owner. My wife and met her 17 years ago so we always make sure to stop by for a pint of Guinness and a chat with the regulars.
- Boulangerie Asanoya Jiyuugaoka: Great bread and pastries.
- Devilcraft Tokyo - Jiyuugaoka: Epic deep dish pizza and solid selection of craft beer on tap. There are other locations in Kanda, Hamamatsuchou, and Gotanda.
- Sushi Gyoshin: Great kaiten sushi restaurant in Jiyuugaoka just a few steps from the station. This was another of our longterm haunts and we were happy to see that it hasn't changed. Our son ordered his first sushi by himself and we enjoyed another great meal.
- Quan an Tam: Great little Vietnamese place in Jiyuugaoka.
- Katoriya Jiyuugaoka: Great Yakitori place.
BEER Tokyo is overflowing with great craft beer these days!
- ibrew Shimbashi: This little chain was great. The first one we visited was the Shimbashi installation. This is located in the Shimbashi Ekimae Building-1, just adjacent to Shimbashi station. The building screams Showa inside and out and the beer pub is just a little hole in the wall. They were just wrapping up an all-Hazy-IPA campaign and had a slew of great stuff on tap. The food was also great, and they had a decent non-alcoholic selection as well.
- Isekadoya Shimbashi: This craft beer bar is located inside Shimbashi station, just outside the wicket gates. It has a more modern vibe but plenty of good food and brew. The kushiyaki lineup was great.
- ibrew Akihabara: ibrew has another installation in Akihabara and we had a dinner here as well. They had great food and a different lineup of brews on tap. One thing to watch out for was that they only accepted cash, and the nearest ATM is about 5 min walk back towards the station. Fun spot with friendly staff.
- Antenna America Tokyo: We stopped by this place for lunch on the way to Shizuoka. Nice selection of cans, and a few good ones on tap. It's an open space, and they have a free-to-lay Fussball table which my son and I played a few games on.
Part 4. Shizuoka
After our stay in Tokyo we started making our way back to Osaka for the last segment of our trip. On the way stopped off in Mishima for one night to visit my relatives. Here we stayed at the
Toyoko-Inn Fujisan Mishima-eki. This is a no frills spot but it had nice clean, quiet rooms and a surprisingly good breakfast buffet. We wandered around Mishima in the afternoon then had a big Yakiniku family dinner with my relatives at
Anrakutei Yakiniku. I tried Horumon for the first time and actually enjoyed it!
The next day we headed to Mochimune for one of our long planned trip highlights:
- The Villa Barrel and Lounge. This place was flat out amazing. It's a brewery/hotel run by West Coast Brewing. We stayed one night in the Nelson & Mosaic loft room. This place was so much fun. The restaurant has some great food. We shared several flights of tasty brews including a bunch of tasty Hazy IPAs and the rooms were equipped with a personalized keg with 10L of beer to 'drink at your leisure'. They recommend bringing a growler to take the leftovers with you, and unfortunately they don't sell them onsite. The reservation also included free entrace for the whole family to the adjacent onsen, which was also fantastic and offered some nice views of Mt. Fuji.
It rained heavily in the evening and all through the night, but this made for a fun trip to the nearby 7-Eleven, and a good excuse to just hang out and tap the keg while watching Doraemon reruns on the big screen TV in the room. In the morning the weather had cleared up so we took a long walk on the beach which is just a few minutes from the hotel. The walk from the hotel back to Mochimune station is also quite nice if the weather permits. Truly amazing experience. Also requires booking several months in advance.

2023.05.22 08:13 WheresMyEditButton Scenic Sequel
Okay so the ”Scenic Route Collection“ I linked to last time only had three CYOAs, of which there are now “4 1/2.” The newest is called Bioroid.
https://www.reddit.com/makeyourchoice/comments/13j31rv/the_bioroid_a_scenic_route_cyoa/?sort=new It takes place in the same “universe” as Holy Savior “Don’t Call Me That.” However, he never purchased Bio-Roid Cultivation Tanks. Two Biomatter Cultivators, one “in storage” on New Taskiim, but remember that the Akaton-Class Corvette was one of the smaller ships. The only reason he was able to get a Mining Drone Forge and Refinery was that he found the Karenina Convergence. The Original forgeworld let him add modules above and beyond the usual limits. However, the description of Bio-Roid Cultivation Tanks in Scenic Route (01)
https://www.reddit.com/makeyourchoice/comments/koqk2h/comment/iwpze0t/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3 mentions that Amos knows a guy who used the module to clone Mae West.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mae_West I’m going to call them “Adam West,” not because I think TV’s Batman would act anything like that, but because I find the reference funny. Dr. Frankenstein named his monster “Adam,” and it is a common name for clones and “first members of a new race of men.” Adam “I understood that reference“ West was the guy Amos started hanging out with after leaving Belladonia. He was grateful for the rescue, but his friend was heading back to New Taskiim, and Amos was a bit tired of “religion.”
He waved at the celebration held in honor of his rescue. His friend sent a message with the good news, and also instructions for something called a “barbecue.” Flipping burgers, drinking beer, playing horseshoes, it wasn’t half bad. There were way too many people, and the grillmaster had four arms, but he put up with it for the sake of the giant robot in the parking lot.
Algernon came by to swap stories. He was better at explaining who the Kaftianian Divinity were without offending any of the twelve. He had been around enough to understand the fictions their priests were currently enforcing and what little truth he could get away with. Amos only saw three, Belladonia, Algernon, and Phosia was sneaking around pretending not to be at the BBQ. Algernon did a good job making the other nine seem all-knowing without technically telling any lies. Amos had a begrudging respect, but could barely follow the story of his own adventure. He had a few of the beers he was on his way to enjoy when he met Belladonia in that bar, said he was heading back that way for some hangover cure.
Belladonia liked the human coffee, but Amos thought the Taskiim might need something a little more potent. They were seven something feet tall, but they were the meditative types more used to drinking tea than hard liquor. It’d take him a little while to get back, but a first hangover is educational in teaching new drinkers their limits. Hangover cures for their second time drinking helped them learn balance, but all the sage advice in the universe can’t teach faster than painful experience.
In the morning, Belladonia was introduced to a human custom. They had their churches, devoted to the one God that “Aymost“ spoke of, but also “discussion time.” It often included coffee, which is what Belladonia was really there for. The black liquid soothed her hangover with sugar and cream. The purpose of the discussion group was not “to find the right answer,” but to hear different perspectives. The church Holy Savior was born to members of was centuries old, survived the rise and fall of civilizations back on his homeworld. It needed to be translated into modern language, which was a delicate process. Even the word ”religion” meant different things to different people, so the church back home focused on the “relationship” the all-knowing God wanted with his people.
For example, he knew in advance the guilt someone would feel after they did something bad. He gave people rules to stop them from experiencing the worst guilt, but also spoke of forgiveness. It is actually difficult for people to forgive themselves, especially if they set high standards for themselves without fully understanding who they really are. Innocent children are innocent enough to know they have not given into “human weaknesses,” but may mistakenly believe they will stay innocent. Some parents would prefer that, but trusting them to practice sports instead of slacking off, they may find they become “poor sports.” The lose against other players who practiced more, and lash out because they are secretly angry at themselves for their lack of ability. “Good sports” are gracious in both victory and defeat, because those who do their best have an equal chance of winning and plenty of chances in the future to play again.
If Belladonia had not been so hungover, she might have said something. A Kaftianian able to warp reality does not have “an equal chance of winning” a game with a mortal. Kaftianians also don’t talk about “weaknesses” without stealthily insulting someone at the table with them. This discussion group was different, the discussion was about self-reflection and finding ways to improve. No one looked at her for weakness, they focused inward where true strength came from.
Their strengths could also be weaknesses if applied wrong, the Taskiim were peaceful even when war came to them. They had tried human sports, Amos’ favorite games resembled ritualized violence. The stories he told, of players pushing their bodies to the limit, both inspired and frightened them. They avoided war, but they also did not ”play hard,” which the human Bible said could be ”sloth.”
The Holy Savior was quick to point out that it was merely “signs of sloth.” The Taskiim could recognize it, and reflect on whether they would regret not playing in the future. The athletes who went beyond their body’s limits gained chronic injuries that caused them daily pain, in addition to preventing them from playing even casual games. Such was their love of the game that they never regretted their decision, thinking back on their glory days fondly. An athlete who did not train might only last half of the game, then sit on the sidelines both tired and frustrated while others played. A good sport would support their teammates, but would also train so that they could play the game to the end with no regrets.
Belladonia heard this applied to the Holy Savior’s rescue of the Taskiim. If he had not intervened, they would have ended the war in regret. Win or loser they would have become warlike and lost their culture. Now the Templars trained to hold onto what it meant to be Taskiim even as they trained for war. The human waved away such talk, though Belladonia wondered whether she would be able to do something like that…
There were sports on their homeworld that the Kaftianian couldn’t see any of the Divinity playing together. They all knew the rules, but they were not a “team.” Strange how sitting around drinking coffee and talking about the human bible could put her own life in perspective. She went to where Phosia was hiding and doing a poor job of it. The Taskiim asked if they would like a private room to discuss things almost as soon as she confronted her.
The mining drones had sent back enough metal to make an entire room glitter in silver and gold hues. Phosia wrinkled her nose at the place, but even she had to admit it would do. She lounged on a pile of “coins,” no inscription or anything on them, just flat circular pieces to give the impression of “treasure.” Belladonia sat in a golden chair, because she wanted to have a serious discussion with her ”teammate.”
Coins are nice because they give you something to play with when you’re pretending not to listen. Pick them up, let them slide from your hands like sands through an hourglass. Flipping them was a bit pointless with nothing on ”heads or tails,” but she didn’t need help deciding. Belladonia had changed, that much was obvious. Their immortal life had been sort of empty, and while she seemed a little sad, Phosia didn’t know what to do about it. She seemed happier now, not smiling and certainly not at Phosia, but she looked more like the nice girl in the lab who tried to make her believe the experiments were going to help everyone. Phosia had already decided to support her, whatever she had decided.
That didn’t mean she had to like it! Amos wasn’t coming back, and she was peevish enough to say so. That hurt Belladonia, but it didn’t really change things. She suspected Amos needed some time away, and when he came back they would be… casual. It wasn’t quite ”the friend zone,” but it was so near and yet so far like that. They were different enough that any relationship would take a lot of work, but she believed in the work she was doing now regardless of any relationship to Amos.
Phosia supported her. She didn’t even need to hear the plan, and to be honest Belladonia didn’t have one yet. She just needed Phosia to avoid any “preemptive strikes” against other teams they may or may not play against. It was… ”strategic,“ but hard to plan around the enemies Phosia might make in the process.
Amos was heading to “The Yard.”
https://www.reddit.com/makeyourchoice/comments/n1dl58/working_title_the_yard_visualthematic_advise/ The “one half” of the ”four and a half” CYOAs completed so far. His buddy West was helping set up planetary governments with Bioroid helpers. Amos had a Combat Drone Manufactory to help out in certain places. If his friend were to be completely honest, the clones of Mae West could be a bit “distracting.” After Algernon, this kind of euphemism was refreshing for Amos. They talked like hard drinking men from a less politically correct time in Earth‘s history.
Phosia eavesdropped just long enough to be offended, which honestly wasn’t that long. She thought the Bioroids needed a dose of “strong independent woman” to put these men in their place. That was how Mae “the Main Character” West was born in the crèche.
In a way, these were “the other teams” in the game Belladonia was playing. She could be a goddess to the Bioroids as easily as the… “mortal” had been to the Taskiim. She struggled to find a word to express what she felt about the upstart who dared to meddle in things above his station, to lure Belladonia into changing her ways, but settled for adding all the venom she felt after meeting generations of mortals and wiping out many for lesser offenses into this one insignificant insect. Soon she would squash them, but back to her original point any of the governments could exile these ground forces and let Belladonia help them as the “mortal” had the Falamiri.
Creating a disaster would be much faster. Belladonia was learning from the discussion group that letting people “meander” let them get to the point in a much more powerful way. Phosia could tell her they did nothing wrong, and the book said she could be redeemed, but hearing these Taskiim talk about mistakes they had made her feel surrounded by people who felt as bad about their past as she did and welcomed by them.
They hadn’t done what she did, not that she was ready to share. However, they had lost their planet and that makes people prone to “addiction.” Their culture was so peaceful that they had to be taught war, telling them what she had done would require explaining to much. They didn’t have the ability to do what she did, but they were guilty of some of the worst things they were capable of. They had lost their world, but saved the people, and with the Biomatter cultivators had many of the delicacies. They tried to “fill the void“ with people, in a way that wasn’t fair to them. Using time with them to escape from reality…
The Holy Savior spoke a word, “yandere.” It was not a word in the human Bible. He spoke of things, breaking someone’s legs so that they could not run away. Of locking them in a basement, or hurting the other people in their life so they would spend more time with you. The Taskiim had never gone through with it, never acted on the emotion, but it sounded like what they were trying to express. The violence of the emotion scared them long before they knew the word.
Most were just here to talk about the sin of “gluttony.” The food of home “filled the void“ in the same way, but eating too much had consequences. Stomach aches, but the Taskiim were learning more about the dangers of obesity as their understanding of medicine advanced. They tried to “go without,” but the sky above and the planet they were standing on kept reminding them they weren’t on Taskiim. “Close your eyes and smell the food.”
There were people in the discussion group who were good cooks. They liked making food for the people they cared about, liked having them dependent on them. Their cooking “filled the void,” they were happy to be the one to fill the void for others, but the recognized the ”yandere” tendencies creeping in. To keep “enabling” their eating habits was not good, but it gave them control over someone else in a universe where they were powerless to save their own planet.
Belladonia almost laughed, but stifled herself. It was ridiculous that these people could be “monsters” while baking cookies and having tea with friends. She had wiped out civilizations, why did she feel such a sense of belonging here? Their crimes were nothing compared to hers, but the guilt they felt was somehow the same? The Holy Savior, the one who used his spaceship to rescue civilizations, told them everyone makes mistakes.
The Bible he showed to them had a word called “blasphemy.” He was not the one true God of the Bible, and letting the Taskiim treat him like they did had turned better men than he was into arrogant tyrants. Saving the Taskiim had let him feel like he was in control, during a time of his life when he had been abducted far from a planet he might never see again. He worried about enabling Taskiim, not just their eating habits. Belladonia knew that he’d been fighting the same emotions that had been behind her worst actions, even the ones she hadn’t told him about. Telling him to forgive himself was easy, hearing him tell you to forgive yourself was harder.
Somehow it was the same burden they all shared.

Mass killings in the United States, 2009
Four or more dead (Suicides Indicated by an asterisk)
By a single killer (The killer is charged or would have been charged had he lived.)
Minors cannot generally be held legally liable for a murder or homicide. Such cases are included here with an annotation.
By any criminal means
The editor aims to include all cases. This leads to a presumption to publish. I welcome corrections and additions.

Buona serata e buon divertimento a tutti! Ricordatevi che non siamo qui solo per la musica, ma anche e soprattutto per la compagnia e le risate che si possono fare scrivendo e leggendo il megathread!
Vista l'occasione speciale, in questo thread è possibile commentare con account più giovani di un giorno.

2023.05.09 15:30 Narrow-Reference3496 SEEDs(BED)
I think that the character from The Whale, a lot of the stars from the My 600 pound life series, Tammy, Israel Kamakawiwoʻole and Elvis Presley were SEED (BED) patients.
Reading stuff like this paragraph about Binge eating disorder from Wikipedia
"As with other eating disorders, binge eating is an "expressive disorder"—a disorder that is an expression of deeper psychological problems" confirms my belief that they were psychologically tortured.
(SEED stands for Severe & Enduring Eating Disorders).
Severe and enduring eating disorders: recognition and management Advances in Psychiatric Treatment Cambridge Core (Well...with The Whale, it's not my belief. The story made it very clear to the audience that he was. I am going to say the same about Elvis because he had a lot of problems that were made very public.)
Do you guys agree/ disagree with me?

2023.05.06 22:40 Bioluminescence Three things you loved in each S15 episode (Good Vibes Only thread)
There's a lot to love in every episode of Taskmaster and I found I was forgetting that recently so I'm going to focus on the positives instead. More of an Alex-in-Bad-Golf attitude than John-in-Bad-Golf attitude.
So here are my three things I've loved in each episode of S15 so far!
Please feel free to add your own but ideally without putting anything else, or anyone else down in the process. (I.e. don't be all "I love this series - it's so much better than series N which was awful!" <3 S15 E1 - The curse of politeness. - Kiell's dance! I especially liked the outtake where they didn't quite land the catch at the end. Adorable.
- Kiell and Ivo's live task betrayal! This is the moment when the series started to really gel for me.
- Alex calling out Ivo's weak Wikipedia game during the prize task. Actually, just all of Ivo's prize task experience, including Jenny saying she prefers a sweet nine, and Frankie and Greg questioning Ivo's stilted speech.
S15 E2 - Trapped in a loveless marriage. - Alex's foot sock. Thank you, Kiell for being like 4/10 twisted to bring in that prize task, and then for Alex to go absolutely unhinged unexpectedly. What is wrong with you??
- Jenny during the 'build a bridge' task - from fucking off the plank, to providing moral support through the medium of song.
- Mae's 'ting' at the end of the single-breath task. Delightful.
S15 E3 - I love to squander promise. - Jenny in the potato hat. Absolutely delightful. I only wish I'll enjoy things that much when I'm her age!
- The surprise Ivo clone army. Who just has a stack of Ivo masks lying around??
- Alex and Greg talking about their fan fiction. Again - who does that?
S15 E4 - How heavy is the water? - Frankie giggling during the drum sequence was an unalloyed delight.
- Alex standing in the stream in his waders, looking both magnificent and an absolute numpty.
- The argument over both the throw, and the banana. Just great fun with everyone arguing back and forth, demanding definitions - the lot. Really enjoyed the 'process'.
S15 E5 - Old Honkfoot. - I loved Ivo's mummy trick. The use of the spare costume, the exposed knee, Alex's dawning surprise and delight. Loved it.
- Frankie and Ivo's spoon task banter. "They've blinded me, Frankie!" They absolutely deserved no points, but oh - they flew so close to the sun.
- Greg's delight when he saw the horseshoe on the side of Mae's glasses. Love a Greg double-take.
S15 E6 - It's my milk now. - Frankie's overacting in the companion task. Could it have been better? Absolutely - but he was into it!
- Jenny finding the super secret shoe that surely no-one could ever be expected to find, and not finding the seemingly obvious shoe in a pile of other shoes, which she had ostensibly recently interacted with, as she was wearing a pair of those shoes for the task. Incredible.
- Mae's very impressive word identification in the live task. I was sat there trying to count letters, and they were already on a chair! Skills.
And there you go! Those are mine. It's hard to narrow it down to just three per episode because despite my tendency to grumble, there's so much to love in this very silly, lovely, comedy show.
