2023.06.01 19:46 woodrow7021 Part Two: Costco History Remembered
The Costco you know today is light years different from it’s early days when it comes to merchandising. The first Costco was VERY much a warehouse with low light, lots of walls in strange places, and a lot of product jammed into every available spot. Most manufacturers believed that Costco was just a low quality discounter selling “seconds” (products that weren’t first quality), and so they didn’t want to sell to Costco because they felt it would diminish their brand, or it would violate their exclusivity agreements with other retailers.
To combat this, the founders of Costco made sure there was a huge sign behind the membership desk proclaiming the 100% return guarantee on products sold. It sent a clear message that Costco was not a junk dealer, and that did help a few vendors to agree to sell to Costco. Those first brave companies were rewarded with tremendous loyalty in their relationship with Costco, and the bond stayed strong despite the otherwise fickle world of wholesale/ retail.
So, what was selling, and what eventually went away?
1) several categories were much more prominent in the early days. Automotive aisles had engine hoists, ramps, air tools, jack stands, and more. The tool aisles were loaded with inexpensive tools made by Allied, and it was very similar to Harbor Freight. There were multiple aisles year round of what is often called knock-down furniture. O’Sullivan was the brand name, and the member had to assemble it like an IKEA product. The boxes were enormously heavy, but Costco sold a gazillion bookcases that way. As Costco grew, the realization that it had to focus on reaching higher levels of quality caused it to switch to better furniture brought in seasonally, and as fewer people were working on their cars, the sales diminished on those items to a level requiring the auto aisles to be greatly reduced to mostly oil and windshield wipers.
Tools were another issue. Home Depot, Lowe’s, and some local places like Eagle ( that later got bought by Lowe’s) all monopolized the big brands like Dewalt, and those tool companies believed that if they sold to Costco, their relationship with the hardware stores would suffer significantly. To this day, Costco still struggles to find quality tools to sell.
2) some categories were HOT! Cameras and film were tremendous sellers. Costco usually has 10+ SKUs of cameras, and had a whole pallet island of film. Kodak film, Fuji Film, and Polaroid film was in almost every member’s cart. Unfortunately, Polaroid film was also in the top ten of stolen items! Organized groups would swoop in, fill bags/ pockets with it, then dash out the door. Undercover employees could usually be found staking out that section. All this went away when phones started taking the place of cameras.
3) office supplies had multiple aisles of product. Copy paper sold out quickly (even today, Costco keeps it’s wholesale title by selling truckloads of it to school districts, etc.). Computer paper was a must have—-remember the stuff that had little holes on each side so a gear could pull it through a printer? “Green bar” paper sold like crazy. Office chairs had 6 or more styles, and members would race each other down the aisles in them if they weren’t cabled to the steel. The rise of what came to be known as Category Killers lead to the office department’s reduction to just an aisle. Office Depot, Office Max, etc all could match or undercut Costco on the best sellers by selling all the other items that they carried at a higher mark-up to offset the loss leader.
4) I always felt bad for the bread and potato chip vendors. In the early days, they would be in the aisles for hours before opening because they had to take two retail size packages and use tape guns to create a two-pack of everything. Their companies in the early days refused to believe that customers would be crazy enough to buy huge bags of chips or super long loaves of bread, so for several years they made their route drivers lives miserable. Today, when I see what a supermarket calls “ family size” for a bag of chips, I can only laugh—it looks like an individual serving size compared to Costco! Also, the route drivers LOVE Costco, because it’s typically just one stop and they’re done until they have to come back and restock/ face the product later in the afternoon
5)So very much of Costco in the early days was focused on the commercial size products. Many of the canned food items came only in #10 cans ( the big ones that are almost the size of a bowling ball). There was no option for a smaller can. Eventually, as the membership grew to be dominated by retail shoppers, Costco started the separate Business Center division, and those allowed Costco to have the space for things like 6 packs of small cans instead.
6) Bonus memory! Clothing in the early days was often described as dowdy, old lady clothing that no one would want except at Halloween. Certainly it wasn’t THAT bad, but almost no clothing vendors would sell to Costco directly, so most was bought from middle men selling what no one else wanted. Worse, Costco had huge, ugly clothing racks made from 2x4s and pipe to display the clothes, so it was all displayed like you’d see in your closet. Shoulder view only! Costco put the clothes on a table eventually, and the sales skyrocketed. With the shear volume of people picking through them, it is very, very labor intensive to keep the tables looking clean, neat, and straight, but it’s worth it. The vendors soon saw the incredible sales Costco was doing, and now most sell direct. A few (Harley Davidson apparel for example) are still hold-outs.
Kinda long post, but I hope you enjoyed it enough for me to do more.

2023.06.01 07:18 bagoslime Tell me what you'd pay, and what I need to look out for.
Driving 2 hours to check this chop out tomorrow. Title is clear but still in previous owners name, registration has been out for several years but I'm not worried about that, I've registered worse. I've been on a 103 dyna for several years and a pretty much stock 05 sporty 1200 for a year before that. I've got tools and can turn wrenches, gonna pull and check the plugs, check battery etc, but this will be my first chop and I guess that's kind of a cornucopia of ahit that could be wrong. Not concerned with a small primary oil leak or carb issues, can get that sorted quick.

2023.06.01 03:39 b-morePatrick Foot peg question
| I bought this 09 Nightster recently and I want to replace these foot pegs, I hate them and are assuming they are not stock. Everywhere I look online, the connection pattern to hook these up is opposite to what I need. (These being a female end, where the ones for sale online are male end). All the ones that say they will fit my sportster clearly won’t. I did find a set on Harley’s website that looks like it would fit, but it says it will not on the website. Has anyone had experience with this? And does anyone know what the previous owner did, and how do I fix it? TIA submitted by b-morePatrick to sportster [link] [comments] |
2023.06.01 03:03 bodyfunctions Thinking about getting back in the saddle
I used to ride dirt bikes (long ago and far away). Haven't been on any kind of motorcycle in around 20 years or so.
I have been getting the itch to get back in the saddle.
I'm about to turn 44, and I'm 5'11 and about 210lbs. I have been eyeballing a few bikes, and wanted to get some opinions. I don't really want to spend over $4-5k. Less would be better as I still have to have money for gear (helmet, jacket and such).
- 2002 Honda Magna. Very clean. A little over 10k miles. Always garage kept. New tires is all it needs. Asking price is $3k
- 2003 Harley Sportster 883. Needs a new starter, but dude said everything else is fine. Asking price is around $2k
- I've seen several Victory for sale with decent miles for a decent price. I don't know anyone that has ever had one, but everything I read is positive. Price would be in the $4-5k range.
Any help would be appreciated! TIA

2023.06.01 01:29 Peaceandlove79 How mariujana healed a man with prostrate cancer
By Alessandro Carosi
I was for dinner in this restaurant in Ramintra outskirts of Bangkok, the evening was paid by the political party my friend joined in the last elections and was a chance to meet some interesting people that was interesting for completely other reasons than politics.
We arrived early and not everyone was at the restaurant but slowly one by one everybody arrived and one guy in particular let himself to be noticed in the crowd, he had a backpack full of small bags and started to throw it on the tables to each of us I was wondering what the hell was and I thought about cocaine so I asked my friend and told me to be marijuana …. So now the interesting thing is that is legal in Thailand and in every corner you can find small or big shops selling weed and last week walking around in Kao San Road that is a popular area for tourist and young backpackers turned out to be some sort of Thai version of Amsterdam …… and all I can say is ….. no comment !!!!
Let’s go back to the dinner, the guy that come in masked turned out to be a man, a 65 years old man, he looked out of place in that dinner cause I would have seen him better in a Harley Davidson bikers gathering for the way he dressed and long hairs, he sat next to me and I asked what was all the ganja about and here the story become really fascinating.
Five years ago he was diagnosed with prostate cancer and one year to live and you can imagine the shock and fear, he tells me that spent months crying knowing that he could die in any day but he didn’t want chemotherapy so he begins searching for alternative medications till he find a lot of articles about the healthy benefits of smocking marijuana and having nothing to lose he starts smoking and one year pass by and he still alive, two years, three, four, five and he still alive and is when I met him so curious I ask if he did any check up but that’s even more surprising cause he tells that ……. No, he didn’t and he doesn’t wanna do it, since he started smoking he felt better and better and still feel in great shape mentally and physically so he isn’t interested to go back to the hospital and that’s amazing cause he isn’t the first case that I hear to be healed naturally.
I don’t want to go too deep into the medical aspect of it or the alternative natural solutions but what I’m gonna Touch is what might be the cause of any disease … STRESS!!!
We live in a system that is made to cause stress on a daily basis and people are mentally and physically ill more then ever so something has to change but we can’t expect that from the same people that benefit from us being sick we must start to find a solution internally trying slowly to remove ourselves from this broken system, I’m sure a lot of people was healed by natural medications but I’m sure there are many others that haven’t been so we should focus to the reasons why we get ill in the first place and begin to unlearn what this fucked up society taught us and learn a new way.
I believe that any disease starts from an unbalanced Soul and that’s when our immune system weaken and any mental and physical disease appear, I could see that on myself everytime I was ill and that happened when I had a prolonged state of stress.
Someone sick won’t rebel, someone sick will be in fear, someone sick is an obedient being and all the Covid thing should make you think how easy is to control the population emotions and way to think, there is no gain for people that want to be in power from having a healthy, educated to questioning and fearless population.

2023.05.31 17:21 mr_ds2 Not sure what to get
In my 20's (back in the 90's) I had a '75 CB500t. I was just about to buy a new '95 Nighthawk 750 when life got in the way and I ended up having to move across the country and just never got another bike. Until 2019 when I saw an ad for a 2015 CTX700. For some reason it just spoke to me. I decided to stop and take a look at it on my way home from work. I sat on it and was disappointed. I was too big for it. Being 6' tall with a 34" inseam, I couldn't get my knees under the fairing. As I was looking around the dealer I saw a 2015 NC700X. I fit on that and purchased it on a whim. I fell in love with it, at least I thought I did. Turns out I just fell in love with riding again. While I think the NC is a terrific bike, it's really not for me. I'm on the tall side, but so is this bike. I find that I have to step up on the peg to swing my leg over it, even though I can flat-foot it without issue. Probably just because I'm in my 50's and around 250 pounds now. Also, even with a "comfy" Shad seat, my ass is hurting pretty bad after an hour or so. Also, my wife complains about the pillion seat being too small and thin. She's 5'1" and 120, with a bad back. I'm in the market for a different bike. Something a little lower so I can get on it easier, but not so small that my knees are up to my elbows. Something with a comfortable seat for both my and my bony-assed wife. I don't care for Harleys or any bike with a ton of chrome. I sat on a 2019 Shadow, but really didn't like how the tank was wider than the seat because I found that uncomfortable. I saw a Triumph Tiger 1050 that I liked the looks of but when I showed a picture to my wife she just said "no". I see a couple BMW R1150RS's for sale in my price range, but they're both around 20 years old and one has over 100k miles on it. I'd like to keep it around $5k. What would you fine people suggest???

Hello all! I apologize if this isn’t the right place, but I’m taking my motorcycle lesson on June 10/11 through Harley-Davidson. I have a small (like need an XS helmet) head and wondering if for the class, a full face or half helmet is better? I want to feel comfortable enough but also make sure I can hear clearly enough

Shipping Shipping is via USPS unless otherwise requested. I make an effort to have all items shipped out within two business days, but an additional delay of a day or two is possible depending on when I can make it to the post office. Tracked USPS shipping is $5 in continental U.S. or for active duty US military APO up to 8oz and at cost above that. "Risky shipping" is available for any item under 2 oz for $1 at buyer's discretion, but I may try to talk you out of it if it seems particularly risky. Risky shipping is via plain white envelope with no tracking. I tape very well and have not lost a risky shipped delivery yet on here out of many many packages sent this way. All shipping, regardless of method, is at buyer's risk. that being said I have not had any issues with 100+ packages.
Grading/Photographs I am not a professional numismatist, and sell on here as a hobby. Please judge all coins by the photos. If you need more photos feel free to ask. Any grades mentioned are my opinions only. All coins are authentic to the best of my knowledge unless specifically mentioned otherwise. Please feel free to reach out with any questions or with anything else you are looking to purchase

2023.05.30 22:44 King_Poseidon_ Start with Why
Has anyone else read this, by Simon Sinek? I’m honestly upset with myself for dragging myself through this whole book, I got it free from the library but still want my money back it was that frustrating. It’s 200 pages of non stop talk about Apple and Harley Davidson with very few relevant points. I’d love to hear other opinions, I’d like to know if it’s that bad, or if it just rubbed me the wrong way for some reason
