[PES 2021] The Nigerian Zidane Season 1 — NaijaBall Z

2023.02.01 05:08 RichHomieLon [PES 2021] The Nigerian Zidane Season 1 — NaijaBall Z

hey guys,
i made a poll post a couple of weeks back about leagues I’d never touched before in previous video games to start a BAL save. there were a lot of great choices, but in the end, Japan were the winners, so the J-League it is! here’s the start of the story of the Naija Zidane…pic
my story starts in early 2020. i had a distinguished youth career at my childhood club new york red bulls, winning golden balls at youth tournaments and establishing myself as the club’s future no. 10. then all of a sudden there was a huge misunderstanding between my coaches and folks, and I decided to leave rbny.
to leave the bad taste of that abrupt ending behind, i needed a fresh start. we hired an agent and i asked him to look all around the world for a new club. literally, all around the world. since i was already going to represent Nigeria over the USMNT, i wasn’t opposed to going super far.
well, after several weeks of searching, my agent comes back to me with an offer from a club in…Japan. 😳
“oh wow!! is it Urawa Red Diamonds? FC Tokyo? Vissel Kobe where I can chop it up with Iniesta?”
“ummm…nah. but it is a club that’s made headlines relatively recently — Sagan Tosu.”
“hmm…Fernando Torres’ club, right?”
“yes. although he did just retire.”
“DAMN! i just missed him 😭”
so off to the land of the rising sun i went on new year’s day. tosu is not a typical destination city at all, besides the club’s stadium the most interesting things in town are the train station right next to the stadium and the premium outlets 15mins away. to put it bluntly, it’s boring as fuck. 😂 quiet though, an entire world away from NYC in more than one aspect. and the sushi is delicious!!
we started the league on a flyer thru january and february, winning each of our first five games in the league by a combined score of 18-4, including smashing Vissel Kobe 3-0 in their house. i scored 4 goals on my pro debut against Kyoto Sanga and added an assist, and i scored 8 goals and had 5 assists in those opening 5 games. i never thought i would be able to come in as a rookie to ANY pro league and put up those kinds of numbers.
then in march we stumbled a little bit. we had our first league loss at perennial contenders Gamba Osaka by a score of 3-2 despite me opening the scoring with a penalty. then we unfortunately crashed out of the Emperor’s Cup in the first round with a 2-1 loss at Consadole Sapporo. despite us scoring that was definitely the worst game we’ve had all season, and my worst performance as well. i really wanted to go deep in the cup so i was gutted with losing so early. then we ended the month winless after draws with Cerezo Osaka and our Kyushu Derby rivals Avispa Fukuoka.
with only the league to now focus on we kept up our mostly blistering form thru the spring and we went into the month-long break at the end of june being 10pts clear at the top of the table. i was able to mostly keep up the standard of my performances, even though i did get my first ever red card away to Nagoya Grampus. we ended up having to settle for a 1-1 draw after too smh. i guess i could’ve used a rest anyway, i normally play every minute!
now in the second half of the season, we’ve begun to lose our grip on the top spot in the J-League. we went winless in our first five games back from the break, losing three of them. we just got revenge against Gamba Osaka 1-0 at ours with me scoring the game’s only goal, but our lead at the top is now just three points over Kashima Antlers. i know we just have to take it game-by-game, but i’m really hoping we don’t bottle this shit and stay the course man. highlights
as for me personally, i’m having a blast. i’m top scorer in the j-league with 17 goals and i’m also leading the league with 11 assists, having directly contributed to 28 of our 40 goals in the league thus far. table + player progress i’m shocked that i produce THAT much of the offense tbh. the language is hard as FUCK to pick up, but I’ve been rooming with the club’s three other Africans — Kenyans Teddy Akumu and Ismael Dunga, as well as my countryman Chico Ofoedu (who by the way is a beast who the manager really should play more #FreeChico). they’ve been such great helps to me and have really made me feel far more comfortable so far away from home. there’s nothing like a hearty bowl of jollof rice after training! i’m liking it here and i think i’d want to at least stay long enough to help us in the AFC Champions League regardless whether we win the lea—
wait a min bruh. my agent’s calling me. maybe wants to chat about August deadline day craziness…
“good news bud. i just received word of a club from Argentina who put in an offer for you!”
“wait, seriously?! who?!?! 👀”
Argentinos Juniors!! none other than Diego Armando Maradona’s original club, and their stadium is named after him too!!”
“yooooo no shot fam!! that’s incredible! what an honor it would be to play at the club he started, in the stadium named after him.”
“all due respect to Sagan Tosu of course, but i don’t need to tell you they’re a big step up from where you are now. they’re offering you a great deal more money as well, more than 1.5x your current yearly salary! they just started their season in Argentina but you’re in midseason form, and you’d immediately slot into the AMF role perfectly. you’d also have Gabriel Milito as your manager…”
“wait — you mean THAT Gabriel Milito?? Ex-Barça defender, Diego’s brother??”
“you bet, champ.”
“woah. idk what to say. i’m flattered and honored. i didn’t think something like this would come so soon, i’m only 7 months into my pro career!! imma need some time to think it over for sure.”
“well, don’t take too much time — today’s deadline day you know. if you don’t reply by the end of the day, the deal is off. it’s either you leave now or finish the season here before revisiting in the new year.”
“ok man. talk to you in a bit.”
well, talk about a plot twist!! i’m a lil torn tbh. on one hand i do want to at least finish the season here in Japan and see whether we can get our first-ever trophy in club history. but on the other hand, Argentinos Jrs are a historic club and there are few better footballing cities on earth than Buenos Aires. to say i’m not tempted would be a huge lie. offer
will my Japanese odyssey continue till at least the end of the season, or will i find myself flying all the way back to the other side of the world all over again? find out next time on NaijaBall Z…

2023.01.11 01:08 BeatlesRock64 Callaghan and Channel 5 Tour

Like most of you, I am incredibly disgusted and disheartened with what has come out about Andrew in the past few days. I have reflected on the event Channel 5 threw that I was able to attend last November, and I was interested to see if any of you had similar reactions.
At times, I have felt that Channel 5 has produced content that exploits the mentally ill and impoverished for laughs. Moreover, I feel like the productions have dangerously made light of racist and sexist behavior through recurring characters on the programs. While I believe some of these efforts are made to humanize people and display that these individuals are everyday people, at other times, it feels like Andrew displays these outrageous beliefs to make characters out of the individuals they interview.
At the event I attended, Channel 5 hosted two rappers they found off of Craigslist. I believe they were trying to bring live what they deliver on YouTube. Characters.
The first rapper brought onstage introduced his content as meta, satirical, and intelligent. The second rapper said his lyrics stood out because he was “autistic.” Following these introductions was the exchange of lyrics, mainly regarding both of the opponents’ weights and handicaps. I found this uncomfortable; however, both parties agreed that nothing was off limits. Round two arrived and the topics shifted. The second rapper began speaking about the “sarcastic” rapper’s mother and let out a tirade on the “grossness of women’s pubic hair.” Whoever DJed the production set off air horns; Andrew laughed as the rapper continued to point at Andrew’s hair and suggest that was what his opponent’s mother’s vagina looked like, over, and over. Much of the crowd, including Andrew, exploded with laughter and cheers. He won. The rapper’s comments on how a woman’s body should look were misogynistic and they were applauded and platformed by Channel 5.
In videos, the camera can zoom in on Andrew as he reacts to people, making it clear that the production finds these people inappropriate and their actions harmful. The team is unable to do this in a public setting. Giving these people a stage endorses and encourages their behavior. You cannot do a super zoom on the stage of a concert.
The event went on to screen footage the team hadn’t released on YouTube. One of the clips was an explanation as to how they met an Republican recurring character on Channel 5, who they also use for merch drops. This interaction was outside an abortion clinic. The clip featured the cameraman trying to zoom in on a car entering the parking lot of the clinic—presumably for an abortion. Thankfully, the patron’s windows were tinted, but why would the production crew draw attention to an individual seeking an abortion? If they had gotten a clear visual, would they still have featured it on the tour? Is it not dangerous to broadcast people seeking abortions when protesters—like the individuals Callaghan was interviewing—harass women for practicing their bodily autonomy?
Later, the team displayed another clip. This time a freshman college party in Chico that Channel 5 had volunteered to cover; however, the surprise was that Channel 5 would bring in a host of 30 year olds that the crew met at a skate park to mingle with the college students. This seemed irresponsible, especially when the individuals from the skate park entered an altercation with the college students, and a fight ensued, which Channel 5 happily filmed. The production team created a threat to the students’ safety and instead of working to defuse the situation, kept rolling.
Once the clip ended, Callaghan welcomed to the stage the same 30 year olds featured in the video to rap on stage to a cheering audience.
I believe the misogynistic and inappropriate behavior Andrew encourages from the people that Channel 5 transforms into characters supports the validity of many of these allegations. While many of Callaghan’s videos contain social commentary that major media platforms hide from, there are undertones of misogyny and a general lack of empathy, especially prevalent during the clips featured on the tour.
In the future I hope grassroot journalists will be able to draw attention to the social problems that are ignored by media outlets. I hope these productions will treat racism and sexism as not something to be laughed at. While there is something to be gained in displaying how ungrounded alt-right beliefs are, when their behavior is treated as comedy it can become normalized to the audience. Just because the threat is portrayed as a clown does not mean it is no longer a threat.
I hope I am not misrepresenting the contents of the tour. If you walked away from the event with a different interpretation of what Channel 5 was trying to accomplish, I am happy to read it.

2023.01.02 23:55 pdawg4000 I have just finished a 4 week Patagonian roadtrip. Here's a list of things/tips/info that others might find useful.

I have just finished a trip in Patagonia, starting in Ushuaia, and finishing in Pucón. We went through: Punta Arenas, Puerto Natales, Torres Del Paine, El Calafate, El Chaltén, Along Ruta 40 stopping at Cueva de las Manos, Perito Moreno, Chile Chico, Puerto Rio Tranquilo, Cerro Castillo, Coyhaique, Queulat National Park, Chaitén, Villarica, and ending in Pucón.
I thought I’d compile a list of stuff for anyone looking into going to some of these places, as there is so much info and I definitely found some things a bit daunting/confusing before setting off. This isn’t a suggestion of things to do, but just things we didn’t know before, we figured out or learnt on the way, which others may find useful.
General Things:— Most of the time you will be out of phone signal, apart from when you’re near small towns/settlements. We used a combination of apps to help us through this: iOverlander, which allows you to see through a filter, all the different things you might need on your trip and where you can find them. Gas stations, food shops, hostels/hotels, repair shops, restaurants, showers, laundry etc. If you have an Android phone, you can download the map and view it offline. Sadly, this isn’t possible on an iPhone, as it doesn’t load the map part, but you can copy the co-ordinates into another app, Maps.Me, which allows you to download huge sections of maps for offline use. It is also really great for navigation, it’s a lot more detailed than GoogleMaps and also shows hiking/walking paths, waterfalls, and potable water, so it’s perfect for Patagonia. And of course, a trusty paper map and compass for backup and when the phones died.
— In Argentina, you will save a lot of money when using cash. There is an unofficial exchange rate, called the ‘Blue Dollar’ which is about double the official government exchange rate, which you should take advantage of whilst in Argentina (you get twice the cash for what you pay in your native currency/effectively everything becomes half price) You can bring cash in dollars/pounds/euros and swap at ‘Cambios’ (money exchange shops) or do a digital transaction via Western Union app or website and collect the cash (just search on Youtube ‘western union blue dollar exchange’ or something similar and there are loads of videos explaining, but it’s very simple.) This was the simplest option for me, but not everywhere has a Western Union. You should also check BEFORE you do the exchange via the app or website, that the Western Union actually has the cash available, because you can’t get your money back if they don’t have cash, and you will have to wait till the next branch, or until that branch gets cash from locals paying money in or a delivery. I would encourage everyone to try and plan ahead, and get their cash in Buenos Aires, as there are so many exchanges there. If you’re using Western Union, your options are very limited for this in Argentinian Patagonia!
EDIT: People have commented that the above is no longer as much of an issue, with Visa and Mastercard now offering the 'blue dollar' rate, not sure about amex. This appears to have literally just after my trip and my post so I can't confirm, worth looking into yourself, though. Either way, sometimes place won't take card and you need cash, some independent gas stations that are in the middle of nowhere for example, I could only pay cash.
— If driving, fill your tank whenever you go past a gas station. They are few and far between sometimes, so plan ahead. Gas is much cheaper in Argentina than in Chile, so make the most of that if you can. It doesn’t hurt to have a jerrycan in the car either.
— It is windy pretty much all the time in the Southern part of Patagonia, so much so, that sometimes it was impossible for us to cook outside on our camping stove.
— With border crossings, Argentina were super chill, even though we’re English! They just checked our passports, weren’t bothered about our covid passes (but definitely have them just in case) and barely checked our van (they just popped there head in or didn’t check at all.) Chile on the other had were a little more strict. They will want to see your Covid 19 vaccination certificate, passport, and they will give you a little stamped receipt which you need to keep. You also can’t bring in any fresh fruit, vegetables, dairy, or meats, although if any of these things were in a sandwich, or something else pre-prepared, it was fine. They also checked everywhere in our van and I mean everywhere, including under the hood.
— The national parks in Chile, require you to have a ticket which can only be bought online. As previously mentioned, there is no phone reception in many of the places in Patagonia, so try to purchase your tickets when on WiFi before you arrive. I didn’t actually know this before, but in Torres Del Paine, the ranger allowed me onto their office Wifi in order to get the tickets. But at other parks they wouldn’t let us do this, so we had to drive to a hostel and pay to use their wifi, and then drive back to the park. The Perito Moreno Glacier ticket can be bought on arrival in cash or on card. Although the ranger here did threaten me with his gun, as I accidentally walked into his office instead of the ticket office. So that was fun.
— Large sections of Patagonian roads are unpaved roads. This makes driving a very interesting experience. Ruta 40 in Argentina is largely paved, but sometimes the surface is very bad, full of potholes. We only had a 2 wheel drive with tiny tires (Chevrolet n400 Van) and made it unscathed, but I was white knuckling it sometimes, and would have felt better in something a bit more equipped for that terrain.
— A small note, but there is a glacier called Perito Moreno, in El Calafate, but also a town called Perito Moreno, further north. This confused me for a while, but if you’re looking for the glacier, it is near El Calefate.
— The Carretera Austral (Route 7) is insanely beautiful with many many places to pull over and take in the natural beauty. If you are driving, I recommend taking this route, but once again, it is largely un-pathed, but paved from Puerto Rio Tranquilo upwards. There some ferry crossings though, which need to be booked in advance (5 days prior for us) as they get very busy. As we were on a schedule we got the longer ferry from Chaiten to Puerto Monte (10hr crossing) but there is another shorter route with 2 crossings
Longer route tickets are viahttps://www.navieraustral.cl/
For the shorter ferries, tickets can be bought viahttps://www.barcazas.cl/barcazas/hornopiren-caleta-gonzalo/?lang=en
— Most Copec gas stations, in Chile, have showers and they’re pretty good. The cost is 900 pesos and it was truly amazing after a few days without one. Shout out to hot running water. If in a van, they also allow you to stay overnight. Although it’s not the best, it’s fine if you’re stuck or just can’t be arsed to drive anymore.
— Chile is very expensive.
Ushuaia— Ushuaia is awesome, but very Expensive! If you need any outdoor gear, get it before you get there, or if stopping in Punta Arenas, there is an outlet/discount area with an outdoor shop (It has everything you would need, but it does it have limited options for things. Also note the previous stuff about bringing cash.
— There is only one Western Union here. It’s in the supermarket, and gets very busy very quickly. I had to queue for 1.5 hours to get cash. So, if flying into Buenos Aires, I’d advise you try to pick up enough cash before setting off from there.
— If you want to get the bus to Tierra Del Fuego, don’t book through a tour company. Head to the main bus terminal, near the water front. There is a little brown shed at the back, and these guys operate a minibus company for (I think) 8,000 pesos per person. You will also need to buy a ticket to enter the national park, and the bus will stop at the ticket office. The buses leaves every hour, and offer different drop off points. They will show you on the map where they can drop you off and where and when they can collect you. I think the collection times were 3pm, 5pm, 7pm and there were 3 or 4 different spots for collection. Again, they will explain this and show you on the map. There are many amazing hikes here, but sadly we only had one day in the national park.
Punta Arenas— There isn’t much to really do here in my opinion. We only stopped to picked up our rental camper van. However, there is a great retail outlet park where you can pick up stuff you might need for super cheap. It’s called ‘La Zona Franca de Punta Arenas’ (trade free zone). It has supermarkets although it’s all packaged and tinned stuff, nothing fresh, an outdoor shop and some other shops which could be useful for travellers, and save you some cash.
Torres Del Paine National Park— This place is amazing. We spent 3 or 4 days here doing different hikes of varying difficulty. The main thing to note, is it is forbidden to wild camp, in a tent or camper van, anywhere in the park. Camping is available at designated sites and refugios. Campervans are only allowed to stay at the ranger stations. There are a couple of privately owned areas, such as hotels, where you could maybe stay in a van in the carpark (as technically this land is private and not owned by CONAF, the governing body that look after the national parks in Chile) and if this is your only option, it may be better to ask them first.
— There is no phone reception anywhere in the national park, so please always exercise caution and be sensible, when hiking and also if driving.
— The roads are all unpaved, gravel tracks with potholes, except a few small sections. So if renting vehicles, bare that in mind! Something with good, big tires and a high clearance would be advisable, although we didn’t have any of this but got through it…just! We heard a story of someone who got a puncture, and then got a puncture on the spare. They then had to drive to the Argentinian border on a flat and call for help from there. However, this destroyed the tire, and then destroyed the wheel. If you are driving, maybe have a puncture repair kit in the car just in case. You can also stuff a flat tire with anything you can find — grass, leaves, clothes etc, to protect the wheel as much as possible if you find yourself in this situation.
— We didn’t do the W or O trek sadly, only day hikes. I don’t have much info on those, but most recommend booking it all in advance. However, a guy I met couldn’t get a spot at one of the campsites in advance, but turned up anyway and they made room for him.
— We hiked to the Mirador Base Las Torres to see the famous three towers, but set off a little late after a morning of driving. This came back round to bite us a bit because little did we know, they send everyone down from the top at 4pm — A ranger hikes up, and ensures everyone heads back down. We made it to the top with 15 mins to spare, to get some photos and have our packed lunch, but I would have liked to have a bit more time there. It’s an amazing hike, but the last 1km is KILLER. It’s up all the way, and very steep, over very rocky terrain. But totally worth it.
El Calafate— As previously mentioned the Perito Moreno Glacier is here and it’s pretty amazing. We had a camper so were able to drive there ourselves. There are many tour companies offering trips there, although they are a bit expensive. You can also get a bus from the main bus depot to the glacier. I think this is still expensive, but cheaper than a tour. If staying at a hostel, they may be able to provide a shuttle service. Some people we met, gave some cash to a local family and they took them! You can book a boat ride at the park itself, without the need of a tour company, and it’s much cheaper to do once you are there in person. You can hike on it too, but this is VERY expensive, 50,000 Argentinian pesos. If you’re interested in an ice hike, you can hike a glacier in Puerto Rio Tranquilo in Chile, if heading there or near there, for much cheaper.
— There are a LOT of stray dogs here, but most are kind and not vicious. There are apparently more dogs than people in this town. Thankfully, a lot of the people look out for them — restaurants leave scraps out etc. We saw people cleaning the eye boogers out of there eyes etc.
— Also quite expensive here so try and bring cash. There is now only one Western Union on the main strip, and it’s in the post office (Correo) a big blue building. If you have dollars or euros you can exchange at the RapiPago on the main street. ‘Lotería de Santa Cruz’ does do WesternUnion as well, but it is about 20 minute walk from the main strip, and you will need to check before if they have cash and what the maximum amount you can get is. The cash they have is dependant on locals paying in their cash or playing the lottery, so it may be better to head there later in the day.
El Chaltén:— This is a really fun place, it has the feel of a ski town but with climbers and hikers. Lots of bars with craft beer and some nice restaurants. And of course, the Fitz Roy which is an amazing but also pretty hard hike. But again, totally worth it. There is no fee to hike up here which is great.
Cueva de las Manos— If you’re going here, they only accept cash. If coming from the south, there is a petrol station just off the main road, before you turn off the highway, that is able to do money exchange from Chilean Pesos. Not the best rate, but if you’re stuck, it’s an option. There are tours every hour, on the hour in spanish. Thankfully, a kind German lady who spoke English and lived in Argentina, translated the tour for us. But even if you can’t speak Spanish, it’s pretty incredible. The road here is more gravel and potholes so take it easy on the way to and back. If using Maps.Me, the app actually took me down the wrong road — the only time it failed me! It sent me an hour down a certain gravel road, when I suddenly hit a locked gate and private property and couldn’t go any further. The road you need is ‘RP101’ There is a different route if you’re coming from the north.
Puerto Rio Tranquilo:— This is where did an amazing day hiking on a glacier. There are a couple of different options for this but we picked The Exploradores Glacier, with a company called 99% Aventura (Not sure what the remaining 1% is) Our two guides were amazing and made it a great day full of facts about the geology and flora and fauna in the area. It came with transport to and from the glacier, all the gear that was needed and a lunch. There are many other providers, and other experiences on offer, and all the companies on the water front in little wooden sheds. They all offer a similar things for a similar price, so you can’t go wrong, really.
Cerro Castillo:— Another amazing place to hike. But again, due to our schedule we only had a day hike here, which meant the entrance fee was quite expensive. A lot of people spend multiple days in this park and camp along the way. Tickets can be bought at the entrance with cash. They will need your ID so make sure you have that. If you are driving here, or walking to the trailhead yourselves the entrance listed on Maps.Me is the old one and now private land. You need to continue down the same road about 5/10 mins by car. But be warned, there is a very steep hill that is all gravel, so unless you have a 4x4, i would advise leaving your car at the top of this hill and walking the rest of the way. Me and many others opted for this.
Chaitén:— You can hike the volcano here and it’s free. Sadly, it was foggy and rainy when we were here so we didn’t get to do it. It also erupted in 2008 for the first time in (they think) 9,000 years!
Pucón:— The Volcano is active and ready to blow...there is a green line on the roads which is the evacuation route.
Well, I think that’s all folks! Hope some of this comes in handy for someone. Have a great trip!

Barclays PLC agreed to pay a $200 million fine to settle Securities and Exchange Commission charges stemming from a flubbed debt sale earlier this year. Mounting volatility in government bond markets is intensifying fears on Wall Street that this year’s wild swings in the world’s safest assets could further destabilize already-rocky financial markets. For more info visit https://stockxpo.com/best-stocks-to-buy-for-swing-trading-for-this-week-expert-stock-picks-of-the-week-by-stockxpo-09-30-2022/

StockXpo's Diversification Strategy
Companies often think about diversification when they reach a certain point in their development. Igor Ansoff identified diversification as one of the four main growth strategies in 1957, and it allows companies to look at other markets or new products to expand their reach and revenue.
Diversification aims to smooth out unsystematic risk occurrences in a portfolio by ensuring that the positive performance of some investments balances out the negative performance of others. Only if the securities in the portfolio are not completely correlated—that is, if they react to market factors differently, frequently in opposing ways—does diversification pay off.

2022.04.03 00:20 pequenojalapenoo Cafes with reliable outlets?

Going to be in Chico tomorrow for a few hours and have a ton of work to do. Any cafes that have reliable outlet availability and don't mind someone who has to hunker down on the ol laptop for few hours? Spot with tasty food preferred. Will be from hours of 9-noonish.
I've been to Chico couple times and familiar with the area but don't really want to have to drive around from spot to spot to find a cool place if I can help it.

2022.03.27 13:00 insidebrazilianmusic Breaking down Brazilian music for foreigners, episode 3: a drop out of priest school, then a drop out of medical school; a man who intentionally disappeared from the public eye until his death; a song which served as a hymn against the military coup; one of Brazil's greatest lyricists - Belchior!

Belchior – Como Os Nossos Pais
The structure of this post is: ```1) Introduction `2) Lyric translation and interpretation 3) Song technical analysis with timestamps .
1) Introduction
Born in 1946 and raised in Sobral, in Brazilian state of Ceará, Belchior had 22 siblings. His mom sang in the church chorus and he would study music and sing from a young age, singing in Brazil’s informal marketplaces. He enjoyed a pretty stable childhood as his father was a judge, and had a great education, being able to speak Latin from a young age and reading plenty of Brazilian and French poetry. He was an avid reader and a fan of Dante’s Divine Comedy. In 1962, aged 16, he moved to Fortaleza, the capital of Ceará, to study Philosophy and finish his schoolwork.
Belchior then started in a very atypical path for an artist. In 1964, aged 18, Belchior went to the monastery with the aim to become a priest. There he developed his Italian, French, Greek and Latin even further, also having contact with music, developing his singing skills in the church’s chorus. He also read a lot, including philosophy. When he was 21, however, he understood he didn’t have the vocation for being a priest and decided to leave. However this period in the monastery is seen as a highly influential for his capacity to write in a poetic fashion.
In 1967, aged 21, he decided he wanted to be a doctor – he then passed the admission exams to join Medical School. At the same time, he would be teaching 16 to 17 year old students for their university entrance exams. During this period he would be actively writing, composing and trying his luck at local music in festivals.
All of that incredibly varied background culminated in Belchior developing a passion for written and spoken word. He would put a lot of thought into everything he wrote, his songs are loaded with literary references. Not only that, he had a deep understanding of social issues and a unique capacity of translating emotions in simple but powerful language.
“Nós estamos num tempo em que você precisa dizer e repetir as coisas que você tem pra dizer porque as pessoas estão se tornando cada vez mais surdas. Como eu acho importante dizer coisas através da música, eu me preocupo muito com a letra”.
“We live in a time where you need to say and repeat what you want to say, because people and becoming progressively deaf. Because I think it is important to say things using throughout music, I put a lot of effort in lyrics”
In 1971, aged 25 he dropped medical school (he studied Medicine for 4 years) and with a few friends went to Rio de Janeiro to pursue his calling: he wanted to be an artist. In that same year his song ‘Na hora do almoço’, or ‘At lunchtime’, would go to win an important music festival in Rio, which helped in his projection.
In 1972 he decided to move to São Paulo. He would work for movie companies producing some scores and would be playing in schools, theatres, hospitals, prisons. He was already pretty active as an artist and his lyricism and unique style was starting to get the interest of other people. He was however struggling financially, living for free on friend’s houses and struggling even to be able to get buses to move inside São Paulo. It was in this phase that bigger names like singer Elis Regina would first start to record his songs. The history of when they met is very interesting – Belchior met Elis in a studio while watching Vinicius de Moraes and Toquinho, two titans of Brazilian music and friends of Belchior, recording in the studio; she knew him by name given her previous contact with Fagner, another artist from Ceará. She explained she was looking for new songs to record and asked Belchior for some of his songs, to which he politely said he didn’t have any recordings as he had no money to do them. She invited him to go to her place and record, to which he said he didn’t have the money for the bus. Elis then sent a driver to pick him up and he recorded all of the tracks of Alucinação for her, his second album and the one we are going to discuss today. She then listened to the tapes upstairs and immediately picked up 2 songs to sing.
Belchior went to release his first LP in 1974. Whoever, it was his second album, Alucinação (Hallucination - 1976), who projected him nationally (ah, the cover of this album is so cool). The album was an instant success as the track ‘Como Nossos Pais’, the track we chose to cover today, was already released in Elis Regina’s voice in 1975, even before Belchior had officially released it in his album. In Belchior’s own words, after Elis Regina recorded ‘Como Nossos Pais’, he was placed as one of the greatest composers in Brazilian Pantheon and he pics Elis as the single most important artist to have interpreted his songs.
Belchior released 14 albums and you can pretty much find something great all over his catalogue. His poetry has very original, loaded with honesty, never feeling fake or pretentious. And the way he sang all of that made it into something between a hymn and a scream. As he said in “A Palo Seco”, from the same album:
“E eu quero é que esse canto torto
Feito faca, corte a carne de vocês”
‘I want this tortuous tune to, like a knife, cut through your flesh”
(I couldn’t find a better way to translate “canto” guys, sorry”).
And as his friend Fagner put it:
“O Belchior tinha uma grandeza enorme com a palavra. Ele cantava muito alto, pra fora, dizia as coisas com muita verdade, palavras muito fortes, faceis de entender, do momento que a gente vivia”.
‘Belchior was huge with words. He would sing loudly, outwardly, would say things as they where, using strong language, but also easy to understand, and that managed to capture the moment we were living.’
He openly quoted influences from great lyricists such as Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen, and internally people like Chico Buarque and Vinicius de Moraes. He also drew a lot of influence from French troubadours.
Something that one of his daughters said is that his lyrics managed to be, at the same time regional and universal. Regional in the sense that he sang about things of his life, places he had been, his continent… and his accent would constantly remember you of his origins. Yet universal in his themes, in his trueness, in his perception, in the core of the issues he addressed, the vibe. And similarly he was also stuck in time, constantly singing about his age and the years, calling the years out loud in the lyrics (for instance in a Palo Seco he says I know this desperation is trending in 1976 and later says I’m 25 years of age), but also timeless, incredibly fresh. You could have written some of those songs today and perhaps they would be even better placed than the year they have been written.
I mentioned his accent just now – it is what we call nordestino, meaning from the north east part of Brazil. The bigger mainstream productions in Brazil were and still are frequently made between the Rio-São Paulo axis, and hearing an accent from someone different, especially such a heavy accent like the one from Belchior, is so refreshing. In that sense he is part of a wave of north-eastern artists that started to invade the mainstream in the late 60s and early 70s – names such as Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil, Maria Bethania, and Djavan. Belchior’s accent is however pretty unique, especially in intonation, which gives so much soul to his speech. I think it is indissociable from his capacity to be so expressive.
Belchior would also explore painting later in his career. When someone questioned where his art came from, he said:
“Tanto a música, quanto a letra, quadro, pintura ou desenho... ou é fácil ou é impossível”
“Making music, writing, painting or drawing… it is either easy or impossible”.
Later in his career, Belchior started to shy away from media. He had multiple disappearances and seemed decided to be constantly untraceable. In some instances he was gone for over 5 years, leaving personal belongings behind. For instance, he left his art studio in Fortaleza with projects unfinished, at least one house full of paintings and drawings, and some cars abandoned in his name. He also appeared to accumulate some debt. For years after that he be would jumping from house to house, living weeks to months with friends and then moving away, proper nomad style. He would barely contact his family, travelling with his wife only, and avoiding recognition. This was a highly speculated event in Brazilian media and was even covered by the Guardian back then. A social media movement also started to try and locate him, asking him to come back. In 2009, family, producers, partners and music fans mobilised to contact one of the most famous news outlets in Brazil called Fantastico, which actually traced Belchior and found him in Uruguay, the country south of Brazil. He gave an interview with some resistance during which he was happy and easy going but stressed he found the commotion weird, as he didn’t led his life as a celebrity. He politely refused to touch on personal matters, saying he was spending some time with his wife and writing new stuff and had artistic plans for the future. I think it goes well with something he used to say as well:
“O trabalho do artista importa mais do que o significado particular de sua vida”
An artist’s work matters more than the particular meaning of his life (meaning, the particular circumstances of his life).
Why did Belchior decided to be barely contactable? Among his fans and people who studied his work closely, there was the feeling that Belchior was perhaps searching for something else. It was pretty clear he had an razor-sharp read on society, and perhaps grew disillusioned with it all. Looking back at his work you can see links with Buddhist philosophy which is clearly evident in songs like Ypê – I’m linking to an interview where Belchior enthusiast Ricardo Kelmer explores this a bit deeper – and we know that in Buddhism taking a step back from society and enjoying some kind of retreat is pretty common. It is not that crazy for me that a person who was famous and recognized everywhere and been through so many experiences wanted to take a step back from the craziness. In the end nobody will be able to give that answer but the fact is that Belchior chose to live his last decade in an almost anonymous state.
Belchior died in 2017 after an aortic abdominal aneurysm ruptured, aged 70.
2) Lyric interpretation
Before we start interpreting the lyrics for this song we need to recap what has been the military coup In Brazil. I’ll make a very brief introduction here.
In 1964, a military regimen was implemented in Brazil and it would last until 1985. It was characterized by violence against whoever opposed the regimen, widespread censorship to the press and the arts in general (including music). Lots of artists that were critics of the regime and seen as ‘dangerous’ were exiled from Brazil back then, including Chico Buarque, Caetano Veloso, and Gilberto Gil just to name a few. Records were censured, so what they have done is they started writing things in ‘code’ in the lyrics to escape the censorship but still be able to put a message through to people.
Belchior was quite clearly against the military regime, as most artists were. He quotes George Orwell’s 1984 in ‘Clamor no deserto for instance’ in what I see as a clear allusion to the military coup. Therefore, a lot of this song that we are about to explore can be interpreted through this lens, but that’s not the only angle. I actually read a master thesis about Belchior and the military coup – sometimes I think I go a bit too far in this.
And then there is the second element to this, which is what Belchior was trying to do artistically, stylistically. Caetano Veloso wrote a pretty interesting text shortly after his death exploring this. Belchior would oppose himself to all things tropicalism, which was a Brazilian musical movement in the mid to late 60s; he thought they were the establishment, and was trying to bring back something new. This answer to tropicalism – in this context - was mainly spearheaded by a group of people from Ceará that were named ‘People from Ceará’ which included Belchior and others like Fagner and Fausto Nilo. Caetano explained how Tropicalism in itself had opposed Bossa Nova as an artistic movement. Caetano thought Belchior was more focused towards an early 60s style.
Não quero lhe falar meu grande amor // I don't want to tell you, my great love
Das coisas que aprendi nos discos // About things I learned from albums
Quero lhe contar como eu vivi // I want to tell you how I've lived
E tudo o que aconteceu comigo // And everything that has happened to me
Stopping here already – If you look at the album’s title – Alucinação, or Hallucination in English, and see it in perspective, there is a recurrent theme throughout the entire record. The tittle song (which is track number 6 in the album) has lyrics that say.
‘I’m not interested in any theory, fantasy, or something else; I don’t care about make-up, parties, or a beautiful day that to be paired up with yawns and morning dreams; I don’t care about astral love or things from the orient; my hallucination is withstanding day-to-day life, and my delusion is the experience with real things’.
Then he proceeds to talk about minorities – black people, students, a woman alone, normal ‘plain people’, lonely people in the capitals, adolescents, homosexuals. Therefore Belchior is quite clearly separating himself from the dream world – he wants to address real life, talk about the things here and now. This is interesting enough, he says – in fact, this is the most interesting. This is kind of his response to Tropicalia and to bossa-nova to a certain extent, one of the pillars of his revolution. ‘Loving and changing things is what I want to do’. And it is interesting how much of this album is tied around this concept, which the tittle both track mocks and evokes so well. Let’s keep moving:
Viver é melhor que sonhar // To live is better than to dream (living is better than dreaming)
Eu sei que o amor é uma coisa boa // I know love is a good thing
Mas também sei que qualquer canto // But I also know that any song
É menor do que a vida de qualquer pessoa // is smaller than anyone’s life
Basically saying, I understand how love and dreams are important, but real life is better, real life is more, and a song will never be as great as anyone’s real life.
Por isso cuidado meu bem // Therefore be careful, my dear
Há perigo na esquina // There's danger at the corner
Eles venceram // They have won
E o sinal está fechado prá nós // And the traffic lights are closed to us
Que somos jovens // The young ones
They – the government, the ones that have won – would be the danger at the corner, the ones closing the traffic lights. But some people also mention how this is a response to Tropicalia – the ones who came, made it, and ‘closed the doors’, ‘sold their principles’, after getting rich and want to be held as the ‘only ones’ in the pantheon of artists.
Para abraçar seu irmão // To hug your brother
E beijar sua menina na rua // And kiss your girl, in the street
É que se fez o seu braço // Is the reason why your arms
O seu lábio e a sua voz // Lips and voice were made
Just meaning generally, it is natural for you to do things. It is interesting that he does not give an action to ‘voice’ – there is an action to arms (to hug) and to lips (to kiss), but not to voice – implying that what is natural is to sing, to protest. This again can be seen as a critique to the coup. Also ties up nicely with that phrase we mentioned early, the way Belchior sees the process of creation - either easy or impossible.
Você me pergunta pela minha paixão // You ask me about my passion
Digo que estou encantado // I say I'm mesmerized
Como uma nova invenção // It’s like a new invention
Eu vou ficar nesta cidade // I'll stay in this city
Não vou voltar pro sertão // I won't go back to the countryside
Pois vejo vir vindo no vento cheiro de nova estação // Cause I can smell a new season in the air
Eu sei de tudo na ferida viva do meu coração // I know it all in the open wound of my heart
Is see this mainly regarding his history of coming from the north-east very small town of his into the big city. It’s inspiring, he found new meaning, he found the place he wants to be, and he will follow his heart – that has been hurt and still hurts, but precisely because of that understands things better. Again if you look at this with the lens of the coup, you can take the sentence ‘I can smell a new season in the air’ to imply he thinks a new time is coming.
Já faz tempo eu vi você na rua // Long time ago, I saw you in the street
Cabelo ao vento // The wind in your hair
Gente jovem reunida // Young people together
Na parede da memória, essa lembrança é o quadro que dói mais // At memorie’s wall, that picture is the most painful one
He remembers a time where people were young and open to things; they would meet other people, be active, be free. Now this is a distant memory because people cannot express themselves, or the risk being killed or exiled. But also means that people who were once young and creative are now conservative, the old wave of ‘disruptive’ artists are now more than comfortable and not nearly as innovative.
Minha dor é perceber // My pain is realizing
Que apesar de termos feito tudo o que fizemos // That despite having done all that we have done
Ainda somos os mesmos e vivemos // We're still the same and we still live (x2)
Como os nossos pais // Like our parents did
This is a kick in the chest, ties up so much of the message. Despite our innovative drive, all we are going to create, all we think we are going to change, time will come with the realization that we are powerless, and we will find ourselves just like our parents – conservative, speaking highly of the past, mentioning how things were better and how we live in a lost era where nothing good comes new. This is cruel, and that’s why it gives him pain – he is criticising the oldschool artists for their comfort and lack of innovation and originality, but at the same time standing from outside and realizing that this will probably happen to him. He can write about whatever he wants, but he fears the world will keep spinning and he will become old, conservative. Can also be seen as a failure in disrupting the coup – despite our best attempts, our fight, our resistance, we’ll still live in the same dystopic regime, like our parents.
Nossos ídolos ainda são os mesmos // Our idols are still the same
E as aparências não enganam não // The looks aren’t deceiving
Você diz que depois deles // You say that after them
Não apareceu mais ninguém // Nobody else showed up
This just puts what was discussed in point 1 above in further highlight. People still think that the ones they saw in their youth are the best, that nobody else came after them. And Belchior’s despair is realizing that his will happen to him as well despite all his fights.
Você pode até dizer que eu estou por fora // You can say I'm out of the loop
Ou então que eu estou inventando // That I'm making things up
Mas é você que ama o passado // But you're the one who loves the past
E que não vê // And doesn't see it (x2)
Que o novo sempre vem // That the new always comes
Hoje eu sei que quem me deu a ideia // Now I know that the one who gave me the ideas
De uma nova consciência e juventude // Of a novel consciousness and youth
'Tá em casa guardado por deus // Is at home, kept by God
Contando seus metais // Counting his metals (in the sense of coin)
He is talking about the artists that disrupted the status quo and are now quiet, counting their money and living a good life. Or maybe talking about the revolutionary people who were bought by the money the coup threw at them, or were too scared to come clean.
Minha dor é perceber // My pain is realizing
Que apesar de termos feito tudo o que fizemos // That despite having done all that we have done
Ainda somos os mesmos e vivemos // We're still the same and we still live (x2)
Como os nossos pais // Like our parents did
Ye so it repeats in here, and that’s the end. Notice how Belchior uses we, not you – he includes himself in that. He understands he is preaching for a failed revolution. It is a nihilistic, resented cry, but very sweet and very loving. Speaks of the cycle of life and history repeating itself and the way time crushes everything. The revolutionary becoming the conservative through natural means, through love for his past. He is detaching himself from that and watching that happening in such a… poetic way. Belchior was 30 when this came out, so I guess he was in the middle of understanding this process, in this transition period. It is in a way the clown writing about comedy; a revolutionary musician writing about the foolishness of the revolutions.
Talking about this song once, Belchior said:
‘Espero que nós não sejamos parecidos com nossos pais; que demos continuidade ao sonhos deles sim, mas que sejamos absolutamente outras pessoas, personagens de um mundo novo, que a música está ajudando a criar’.
‘I hope we don’t turn out to be like our parents; that we manage to keep building their dreams, yes, but at the same time turn out to be different people, characters from a different world, that music plays a role in creating’.
3) Technical analysis
So take a good listen to the song and then let’s break it down a little. There is a link in the description. Beware however that there is more than one version of this song – there is another one from 1981 that is different so the timestamps won’t match.
1976’s version was produced by a guy named Mazzola.
As we mentioned, it is no surprise that Belchior drew a lot of inspiration from the main names in music in the 60s. One such influence was Bob Dylan – he was called the Brazilian Bob Dylan and was honored by this tittle (linking that interview down below). Belchior clearly explained that he was focused in lyrics, and the melody following that was minimalist, mentioning Bod Dylan but also, interestingly, Gregorian chant, which was something we probably got in touch at lot in his period in Church. Therefore Belchiors revolution was not as much in style as it was lyrical. That does not mean, however, the instrumentation around his songs is boring - most of his albums are well arranged, and benefited from a wide combination of instruments. However, there is clearly less focus on technical innovation than on lyricism and the message. Alucinação, which had the track we are going to cover today, is no different.
Let us jump to the track. Opening up with bass, voice, acoustic guitar and keys. First highlight goes to the keys. There is this Rhodes piano – I think - that has this great pan oscillation (what some people call an auto-pan). If you don’t know w hat that is go to 0:09 and pay attention to how the piano sound seems to oscillate between the two sides of your headphone. In music production ‘pan’ is the act of positioning one element in one side of your ears, and in here the pan oscillates between both sides. In this context it gives this angelical, surreal, dream-like feeling to the opening phrases. Which if you look at the name of the album – hallucination – and the themes we just discussed in the lyrics, makes complete and total sense. That is a great thing in Belchior – the arrangements were always trying to serve the message.
0:19 stop and notice the bass – how freely it moves. This will be a pattern throughout the entire song.
00:27, but more clearly 00:32, you can hear the first introduction of an element with delay that I think is either a guitar or another layer of keys. I think it may be the same one that does the arrangements in 0:42 for instance, possibly with some flanger on top of the delay. You see it is difficult to isolate the elements, given the dream-like atmosphere he aimed at here introducing the auto-pan and everything.
But coming back to 0:40, there is quite evidently a change in intensity of the song, which is driven mainly by the introduction of unproportionally loud toms, really in your face. If you compare the volume to the volume of the next kick or snare hit at 0:43 it is evident how this was a choice, not an accident, and we will see this volume repeated all throughout the song. If you add up what he is saying – ‘therefore, be careful my dear’ it is like he is aiming for that effect. On top of that angelical atmosphere created before this creates an effect of ‘shattering an illusion’ that go so well with the message of the song. It is like reality is kicking, like the song is trying to crush you in a way. That is a cool thing about production, you may say ‘well clearly you are just over interpreting something simple like the volume of a tom’, but then think again – someone chose to create this atmosphere, to leave the volume as it is, to change the intensity of the song at moments. And these things do create a message.
Another thing to be said is regarding the change of intensity in the song. This is only the first time Belchior will do this here, and it later reverts back to either more intensity or low intensity, using lots of stops. For instance the stop at 1:00 (can you also hear that mild tempo marking in between the stop), and another one less dramatic and more instrumental at 1:21. However these changes can be very subtle, if you pay attention from 1:03 to 1:20 the song diminishes in energy without making any abrupt move.
This change of intensity is very dynamic. It oscillates between screams and loud instrumentation and quietness, which I kind of understand in the context of the lyrics being this desire to be revolutionary and this realization that we are in the end like our parents.
1:22 first hint of an organ in your left ear. Also take a listen to the bass in this part, how free the bass have been all the song.
1:29 have you noticed the bells in the left? Nice touch.
There is a very Bob Dylan-like pre-explosion vocal inclination at 1:47. Just listen to ‘Like a Rolling Stone’ for instance and you can hear something similar before the chorus. Then comes the elevation in intonation until 2:20, and the energy drops down again until 2:30ish, to enter another level of high energy. This will be repeating until the end of the song.
I love the bass phrase at 2:25.
And I also love the touches in the end, from 4:21 onwards, with the high notes on the Rhodes piano with the bell and the synth base.
How can you tell a long history using music in a way that is not boring or predictable? In other ways, what format does allow that – Belchior needed that, because his lyrics were so big and dense. Well this right in front of us is one of the ways it can be done. Pay attention and you’ll see that there is proper “chorus” in the song. There is no defined element of verse-bridge-chorus as you would expect in a normal “popular” structure. It all gets lost in the increasing-decreasing levels of energy; the only verse that repeats itself is “minha dor é perceber” and there is no distinctive explosion element to actually classify this as a chorus. This is a way to keep it interesting, keep it alive – if you were telling a story, it would be akin to placing cliff-hangers at the end of every verse but no major climax.
Also please do listen to the version with Elis Regina, but listen to the live one. I’m linking it down below. What a fantastic performer she was, she really gives the song a revolutionary envelope. I think it is very interesting how she gives an explosive element to this using her voice only - she chooses to uses high notes at some points and that really changes the performance. Also there is a more bouncy arrangement to the track, for instance at 2:26 – I think it works well to value her voice. What a performer, she was so connected to the message. The anger in her face at 3:22, the irony she puts in her phrase at 4:08, her pointing at to the background with the dolls the represent something stuck in the past. This is almost 50 years old you know, so very cool.

A cheap distilled liquor brand found anywhere in modern Bólivar, strong-flavored, a wide favorite of the country's poor folk.

  1. Chico Añejo Tequila
A new product created by Destilería Chico for the high-end market, but Bólivar's rich would rather die than drink from the same brand as the poor, so sales have been poor to say the least.

  1. Anton Tequila
Anton is a high-quality liquor brand familiar in Bólivar, the company well-known for their dependence on their relationship with the Singas government.

  1. Anton Añejo Tequila
A bestseller from Destilería Anton, made with excellent ingredients and top-notch craftsmanship. For a gift to your guests, there's no other choice!

  1. Valentina Sparkling Wine
A well-known Leithanien sparkling wine manufacturer. A common sight throughout Leithania, this wine initially got a cold reception in Dossoles, but nowadays enjoys wide acceptance.

The inspiration for this special wine seems to have come from past vestiges of Iberia left in Bólivar, its flavor often described as remarkably similar to the Regal Champagne.

  1. Cerveza

A limited line released yearly to accompany the Dossoles Warrior Champion. Only up for sale while the championship's on, but nothing at all separates its flavor from the normal kind.

  1. Feeedos Craft

  1. Feedos Draft
One of Feedos' many lines of beer and one that's done quite well for itself, praised by draft-lovers as 'the fresh fruit of all beer'.

  1. Pozole Bandidos.

  1. Pozole Verde Bandidos
Repeatedly name-dropped in Columbian tourist magazines, a must-have special meal at Bandidos, limited in supply and first-come, first-served.

  1. Sombrero Dude Taco
The owner was once an army chef for the True Bolívarians, and post-dischargement, came to Dossoles to start up his venture. This restaurant has no fixed outlet — these snack stands scatter all across the urban planning of Dossoles. If you want to eat there, it'll have to be fated to be.

  1. Sombrero Dude Burrito
Sombrero Dude's investor is a firm from Columbia called the 'Maylander Association,' and rumors say quite a few of the cooks are Columbian intelligence agents.

  1. Uncle Marco Dried Cactus
A brand local to Dossoles. A worker's most frequent food supply. Rapidly filling when paired with boiled water, but fairly void of flavor.

  1. Uncle Marco Cactus Fruit
In order to contend against Tio Marco releasing his own products, Uncle Marco added even more industrial seasonings, with a price premium to match. This, surprisingly, resulted in nobody really buying it.

  1. Tio Marco Dried Cactus
An imitation brand of Uncle Marco, with all sorts of additional industrial seasonings considerably improving the flavor, and thus gradually overtaking Uncle Marco himself in popularity.

  1. Tio Marco Cactus Cake
A product released by Tio Marco to further seize Uncle Marco's market, but owing to a lack of proper market research, it ultimately fell flat and nobody blinked twice.

A mixed drink of thoroughly refined appearance, and a frequent guest at all sorts of dinner party. They say a Leithanian noble gave it its name.

  1. 'Sloe'
Also known as 'the Dossoles Bloody Mary,' as the name entails, it's even more popular here than the Bloody Mary itself.

  1. 'Sunrise'
Tumbling layers of red and yellow. Just as brightly vivid as the name Dossoles itself. Ms. Candela's most favored mixed drink.

  1. 'Honey Bee'
Want something for your sweet tooth? Then this is the one. A cocktail blended with the flavor of honey, sour yet sweet, crisp and refreshing.

  1. 'Mockingman'
Inspired by 'To Kill the Mockingman,' a novel that once caused a stir in Columbia. If you've never read it, do it. C'mon.

  1. 'Slammer'
It's not common to see by any means, but if you and your friend want to make a bet, tell the bartender this is the cocktail you want, and they'll give you a very approving look.

  1. Scharzhof Coating Device Starter Pack
'We'll take you to harmless waters to take risks like never before!' That the tagline Scharzhof uses. It has to be said, for the people who actually have an interest in but flinch at the underwater, there's some draw in it.

  1. Scharzhof Advanced Coating Device
With its help, you'll be all set to perfectly experience the 'seabed landscapes' of Dossoles. Of course, these landscapes are only imaginations of a sort, the city planners' picturings of the sea informed by left-behind documents from Iberia.

  1. Scharzhof Professional Coating Device
It looks to be an exceptionally specialist coating device, theoretically able to prevent anyone from being eroded by the sea for a whole month, but given that nobody would ever even volunteer to do so, a show of technology has instead been relegated to the display window.

2021.10.03 18:25 viv85e Capsule Wardrobe : 9 Days London & Paris Early Fall

Image of all I packed in the link below! (plus text list of items). This is my second time traveling "one bag" for me. I am happy with what I packed, maybe one too many sweaters. Overall, I felt comfortable and chic amongst the Parisians :) The weather fluctuated from warm (almost hot) in the sun during the day, to cooler nights and the random shower. I keep telling myself I'm going to upgrade from my humble ikea carry-on bag but it is so lightweight and handles my trips so well - cobblestones and all. It is hard to find anything that leightweight that isn't 5x the price. I've also looked into backpacks, but honestly they're too huge for my travel style. I'm not a backpacker, maybe I'll buy one that converts from rolling to backpack when needed....
Other things I brought - Mirrorless camera (in my personal bag), charging cords, earbuds, batteries and outlet adapter. Toiletries were all decanted to teeny tiny pots.
I couldn't figure out how to add the image of all I packed in this post so here it is on imgur: https://imgur.com/a/CxInbKL
Cheers!

2021.08.26 16:57 bongitokik K opinan de sta opinion de el verdadero emo.,.,🥺🥺👻👻👹👹

!sucks![B]Hula!!! Cansado de Fall Out Boy? No me imagino a un verdadero punk …visitando flogs y diciendo Wa yo soy punk y tu eres puto porq eres emo waa!!

And I think about you being across the rainbow bridge, where you are young and spry, healthy and whole, eating meats and getting treats, running, spinning, and burrowing away in piles and piles of blankets. I dream that I will see you again there. Until then though, thank you for the love and the memories.

How is Boston Beer Company holding up in the beverage market? (SAM)
- Original post by u/Tedi_Westside, full credit goes to them. Edited and shared to DueDiligenceArchive. OP has a substack where he shares some analysis, which you can find here: http://tedinvests.com/. Date of original post: Jun 13 2021. -
Company description and History:
Boston Beer Co. engages in the alcoholic beverage market. Its brands include Truly Hard Seltzer, Twisted Tea, Samuel Adams, Angry Orchard Hard Cider, Dogfish Head, and Havana Lager. Jim Koch founded his company in 1984 after finding his great-great grandfather’s recipe for Louis Koch Lager in his father’s attic. In 1988, Jim created consumer-readable freshness which stems from the fact that Samuel Adams has a limited shelf life and begins to change over time. Today, Samual Adams is one of the only brewers with a cooperative program with its distributors to buy back its beer when it goes past the freshness date. This company primarily markets to a niche market of beer aficionados that prefer quality and exceptional products. Boston Beer Company prides themselves on their fresh ingredients and level of skill that is required to brew their products. They went public in 1995, offering 3.1 million shares that November and of those it held back 990,000 shares toward loyal customers. These loyal customers include those businesses and people that distributed their products and at that time every six-pack came with a mail-in coupon for discounted shares of SAM stock. Ever since the founding of this company in 1998, Boston Beer Company has been a tiger in the alcoholic beverage industry by playing as a niche player focused on quality.
Total Addressable Market (TAM)
The global beer market is expected to bring in $651 billion in 2021 with the U.S making up the majority of that at $112 billion. When comparing the U.S beer market to Boston Beer’s revenue, we can see that they make up only .5% of the overall market. Thus, this company still has a lot of room to grow but they face heavy competition. Additionally, the hard seltzer market was valued at $3.8 billion in 2019 and by some estimates is expected to reach $10.9 billion by 2027. All that growth registers a compounded annual growth rate of 12.7% from 2021 to 2027. Although, I’ve seen the hard seltzer market be valued as low as $2.5 billion in 2019.
First Quarter 2021 Financial Results
  • First quarter 2021 net revenue of $545.1 million, an increase of $214.5 million or 64.9% from the same period last year, mainly due to an increase in shipments of 60.1%.
  • Net income for the first quarter was $65.6 million, an increase of $47.3 million or 259.6% from the same period last year.
  • Earnings per diluted share were $5.26, an increase of $3.77 per diluted share, or 253.0% from the first quarter of 2020. This increase was primarily due to increased net revenue, partially offset by increases in operating expenses.
  • Depletions increased 48% from the 13-week comparable period in the prior year.
  • Full-year depletion and shipment growth is now estimated at between 40% and 50%, an increase from the previously communicated range of between 35% and 45%.
  • First quarter gross margin of 45.8% was 1.0 percentage point above the 2020 first quarter margin of 44.8%. Excluding the 2020 impact of COVID-19 returns and other related direct costs, first quarter 2021 gross margin of 45.8% was 1.0 percentage point below the COVID adjusted 2020 first quarter margin of 46.8%.
  • Advertising, promotional and selling expenses in the first quarter increased $43.0 million or 43.9%.
  • Based on current spending and investment plans, full-year 2021 Non-GAAP earnings per diluted share, which excludes the impact of ASU 2016-09, is now estimated at between $22.00 and $26.00, an increase from the previously communicated range of between $20.00 and $24.00.
Note – “depletion” refers to the rate at which beer, which has already been shipped from the to the distributer, leaves the distributor’s warehouse and ends up to the end users (i.e. drinkers)
Important points to address with regard to their financial results
  • Boston Beer Co. reported some impressive first quarter numbers in terms of revenue which came in at $545.1 million (an increase of 64.9% YoY). In addition, this company’s net income grew a whopping 259.6% YoY to $65.6 million. While I could not find how this revenue was segmented, It’s reasonable to assume that their Truly Hard Seltzer really helped them out. The hard seltzer market is projected to grow 35% in 2021 to become a $2.5 billion industry. Truly accounted for 26% of the U.S Hard Seltzer market in 2019 and they were lagging White Claw which held 58% of the market. To contrast, the Brewers Association stated that, “Overall U.S. beer volume sales were down 3% in 2020, while craft brewer volume sales declined 9%, lowering small and independent brewers’ share of the U.S. beer market by volume to 12.3%.” As the pandemic starts to become a thing of the past we can expect that beer sales will once again increase, but it’s important that we realize that the sales growth in the past hasn’t been all that exciting (see chart below).
  • The advertising, promotional and selling expenses that this company incurred this past quarter increased significantly by 43.9%. During their conference call, CFO Frank Smalla mentioned that this expense increased “primarily due to increased brand investments of $21 million, mainly driven by higher media and production costs, higher salaries and benefits costs and increased freight to distributors of $21.9 million due to higher volumes and rates.” It’s interesting how they group selling expenses along with advertising and promotional expenses but nonetheless it’s great to know how they segmented the expenses. It’s been noted on various media outlets that at least for the time being higher shipping costs have been increasing due to soaring demand amid stimulus checks, saturated ports and too few ships, dockworkers, and truckers. Thus, this company’s supply chain isn’t the only one taking a hit, but rather the effect is nationwide. Additionally, in the conference call Frank noted that, “We plan increased investments in advertising, promotional and selling expenses of between $130 million and $150 million for the full year 2021… These amounts do not include any increases in freight costs for the shipment of products to our distributors.”
Recent developments
The Boston Beer Company to Begin Research and Development of Non-alcoholic Cannabis Beverages (May 14, 2021)- While cannabis infused drinks may take some time before they become mainstream, this is certainly some exciting news and a step in the right direction. Boston Beer Co. recently stated that they would establish a subsidiary that is dedicated to research and innovation in Canada. These drinks will be non-alcoholic and CEO Dave Burwick stated, “We believe non-alcoholic cannabis beverages could represent a new frontier of innovation and want to be ready for future opportunities in the US.” Paul Weaver was appointed to be the Head of Cannabis and in the past he worked for Molson Coors Beverage Company for close to 7 years and Canopy Growth Company for almost 3 years. Thus, I’m excited to see what this company has in store for the future.
The Boston Beer Company And NHL Announce Multiyear U.S. Partnership Making Truly Hard Seltzer The Official Hard Seltzer Of The NHL (Sept. 23, 2019)- While this news isn’t necessarily new, it is certainly an exciting development that hasn’t really had the chance to play out. Covid really began hitting hard with all the lockdowns in 2020 and as a result many sports leagues were forced to close their doors. As we pass Covid and more people start to return to games, we can expect that sales for Truly will ramp up in a nice way on top of the growth this company is already seeing. This agreement is set to last 5 years and marks the first national sports league partnership for Boston Beer Co. and Truly Hard Seltzer. Under the agreement, Truly Hard Seltzer will receive exposure to NHL fans and that includes the opportunity to try out new flavors.
The future of the industry
To get an understanding of what the next 10 years look like for the beer and hard seltzer industry, I searched the web for what experts and professionals in the beer industry had to say. Specifically, I read up on what Donn Bichsel (former chief commercial officer of Revolution Brewing), Kim Jordan ( Co-Founder of New Belgium Brewing), Harry Schuhmacher (Founder of Beer Business Daily), and a few others had to say. First, they predict that this next decade will be one of consolidation in which the large successful brewers that run strong businesses will buyout smaller breweries in order to enhance their businesses. Additionally, the beer industry is already seeing drinkers shift to lower calorie and alcohol content choices as people are starting to become more health conscious. Also, many brewers are starting to innovate by spending money on developing cannabis drinks as the U.S continues to inch closer to federal legalization. When comparing these trends to Boston Beer Company’s current lineup and future plans, it seems that they are pivoting nicely. Not only has Boston Beer Co. proven themselves in the craft beer market with Dogfish Head and Samuel Adams, but they’ve also established themselves in the hard seltzer market. As talked about in the recent developments section, Boston Beer also has their eyes on developing a cannabis beverage. While the cannabis beverage industry is just starting up, it’s been growing at a rapid pace as shown from the graphic below. Thus, the next two drivers for this industry seem to be lower calorie and alcohol content choices such as Truly, White Claw, and low calorie IPAs and cannabis infused drinks.
Comparison to Competitors
Boston Beer Company’s biggest competitors include the likes of Constellation Brands (NYSE: STZ), Anheuser Busch (NYSE: BUD), Molson Coors Beverage Co. (NYSE: TAP), and a few others. In addition to the companies listed, Boston Beer Co. faces competition from a large number of independent breweries that produce similar products and a few of those companies have been mentioned throughout this post. While I could go in-depth into all of Boston Beer’s competitors, that would require far too much work on my end so I leave that up to you. Additionally, rather than look at the beers of the companies I’m going to talk about, I choose to look at what they’re all doing in the hard seltzer space as that is by far the largest growth opportunity ahead of all of them.
As shown from the chart below, Anheuser Busch is by far the largest company in terms of total enterprise value (TEV). Anheuser Busch owns brands such as Bud Light, Budweiser, Rolling Rock, Busch, and more. They recently invested more than $1 billion into U.S supply chains in order to boost their hard seltzer distribution. Constellation brands is the next largest company of the ones I mentioned in terms of total enterprise value. They own brands such as Modelo, Corona, Mi Campo and more. They recently made a push to double their hard seltzer capacity and launch new products to gain market share. Also, in a tweet they posted they claimed that they are already the #4 hard seltzer brand in the U.S. and seeing high Hispanic penetration rates which will likely boost their sales substantially. Lastly, Molson Coors is the closest competitor to Boston Beer Company in terms of TEV and they boast an exciting lineup of brands as well. They own brands such as Blue Moon, Coors, Miller, ZOA, and more. It was noted that in November 2020 they increased their production capacity in terms of hard seltzer by 400%. With that ramp in production came the launch of their Vizzy and Coors Light Hard Seltzers. In addition, they entered an exclusive agreement with Coca-Cola to manufacture, distribute, and market Topo Chico Hard Seltzers in the U.S which recently launched in the beginning of this year. What all this information tells me is that the hard seltzer market is becoming increasingly saturated. Reading this post you may have already known just how saturated the market was, but perhaps it was brought to your attention just how heavy some of the largest beverage companies are investing in the opportunity they’re seeing.

Management

CEO – David A. Burwick
David has served on the Boston Beer’s Board of Directors since May 2005 and was appointed President and CEO in April 2018. Prior to his current position, he served as President and CEO of Peet’s Coffee and Tea, Inc. since December 2012. From 2010 to 2012 David served as President of WW International, Inc. (Weight Watchers) which is a leading provider of weight management services. Mr. Burwick also held numerous positions in Pepsi Co. including Chief Marketing Officer, Executive Vice President of Marketing, Sales, and R&D, and more. His experience in the beverage industry spans far and wide which is one of the main reasons he was hired into his role today.
Founder and Brewer, Dogfish Head – Samuel A. Calagione, III
Samuel A. Calagione, III is the Founder and Brewer of Dogfish Head Brewery and is responsible for managing the Dogfish Head brand in addition to providing insight into all of the company’s brands. Back in June 1995, Samuel and his wife Mariah Calagione founded Dogfish Head and served as CEO until the merger with Boston Beer Company in July 2019. As a result of the merger, Samuel joined Boston Beer’s Board of Directors. His original style has earned him a James Beard Award for Outstanding Wine, Spirits, or Beer Professional. He has been featured in The Wall Street Journal, USA Today, People, Forbes, Bon Appetit, and many other magazines and newspapers. Additionally, he has authored 5 books, including Brewing Up a Business (2011), Off-Centered Leadership (2016), and The Dogfish Head Book: 25 Off-Centered Years (2021).
Chief Marketing Officer – Lesya Lysyj
Lesya joined the company in April 2019 as Chief Marketing Officer. She has over 30 years of marketing experience within the food and beverage industry. Prior to her current position, she served as President U.S. of Sales and Marketing for Welch’s Foods from 2017 to 2019. In addition to her current role, Lesya worked for Heineken USA for 2 years as well as Kraft Foods for 21 years as Vice President of Marketing and Confectionary and Executive Vice President of Marketing.
Management team not mentioned – John C. Geist (Chief Sales Officer), C. James Koch (Chairman and Founder), David L. Grinnell (Vice President, Brewing), and more.

Bearish Potentials

The hard seltzer market becomes oversaturated – Once you’ve read the sections above, it’s no doubt that we come to understand that the hard seltzer market is starting to become very saturated. While Truly accounted for 26% of the hard seltzer market in 2019 and that’s a significant share, I can’t deny the fact that the many competitors entering this space will likely take market share. Although, it’s not only Boston Beer Co. that will be affected but all of the players in this space. What I suspect will happen as these next couple years unfold is an increase in competition followed by the weak brands exiting the market. Recently we’ve seen popular celebrities/influencers come out with their own brands such as Nelk boys up and coming Happy Dad Seltzer and Travis Scott’s Cacti Hard Seltzer. While you may think these celebrity seltzers will not be big perhaps due to lack of distribution efforts, lack of capital, etc., I want to note that the Nelk Boys and Travis Scott have huge followings among the youth and significant backing. While I cannot exactly find the statistics as to what demographic drinks hard seltzer the most, I want to point out the fact that Coca-Cola plans to target the youth with their own hard seltzer. The fact that one of the largest multinational beverage corporations is targeting the youth points to the fact that the younger generation is the main consumer of these drinks. We have yet to see how this all shakes out, but I’m worried in terms of Boston Beer Company’s ability to maintain market leadership.
The beer market continues to slow down – As stated in the future of the industry section, consumers are increasingly becoming aware of health trends. As shown from the chart below, we can see that beer doesn’t really provide any health benefits. While hard seltzer is similar in terms of health benefits, consumers are likely to think that it is a solid alternative option to traditional beer. This trend is similar to when the soda companies began rolling out diet options. Diet sodas say they have 0 calories and that sounds great but the fact of the matter is that those sodas provide no health benefits. We’ll have to see how this trend plays out, but I feel quite confident in saying that the beer industry will experience some setbacks in at least the near term.

What we want to see in the future

Boston Beer Co. rolls out their cannabis drink – While this may seem like a repeat of the developments section, Boston Beer coming out with a cannabis beverage is their biggest catalyst besides hard seltzer. Boston Beer hired the industry veteran Paul Weaver and he stated, “This is just the beginning of our journey and, like any craft, requires a continuous commitment to learning. We know cannabis is new for many of our drinkers and they deserve the best, which is why we’re taking the time to do this right.” From what Weaver said, it seems that we may have to wait at least a year for this drink to come out. According to Pr Newswire, the global cannabis beverage industry is projected to reach $2.8 billion by 2025 and grow at a CAGR of 17.8% from 2019 to 2025. As of right now, many of the companies developing these drinks are located in Canada. North America is projected to grow at the fastest rate during the forecasted period. The major players in this industry include The Alkaline Water Company, New Age Beverages Corporation, Koios Beverage Corporation, Phivida Holdings Inc., Dixie Brands Inc., VCC Brand, and Hexo Corp.
Analyst expectations
  1. Predicted revenue range for 2021: $2.26 – 2.8 billion
  2. Predicted earnings per share range for 2021 (EPS): $23.68 – 26.8

Conclusion

After spending the last two weeks taking a deep dive into Boston Beer Company, I have to say that I like this company. They have a somewhat fair valuation, a growth opportunity in the hard seltzer market, and they’re making a push for a cannabis beverage. Also, I like how this company is really focused on providing their customers with premium ingredients. Although, they still face heavy competition and whether they will continue to be a strong player in the beverage space is questionable in some respects. As of recently, this stock has been on a downward trend and when I started writing this post this stock was trading at $1058.16 and now it’s at $1036.78. If this stock were to reach $950 or below I would consider starting a position. If this stock goes below $850 then I would certainly start a position considering none of the business fundamentals change at that time.

2021.04.18 01:05 Chazzyphant April Mid-Month Try and Buy-s: What have you bought so far and how is it working? Share to us!

My mid-month buys:
Thrifted or second hand: (meaning eBay, thredup, etc):
This 2015 J. Crew embellished sweater very pretty, and perfect for late winteearly spring (we still have snow here in Denver!)
Massimo Dutti top
H&M top I recall seeing this in store and it being sold out in my size, so this is a nice find
Found the Bourgeois blouse at the fancy thrift store! 1X is the perfect fit for me. XL is a tad too small and I wound up passing on an XL that I got off Posh I think to my SIL. However the Deneuve blouse I got in a 1X was too large and about a full 8" too long, so that's going to get passed along.
Retail or non-thrift:
Vince crinkle blouse surprisingly low cut! I tried this on with no camisole and it showed cleavage. Not sure if I'm going to return it, since it was supposed to be for work.
Rowling blouse from MM's "Archive Resale" program very pretty, perfect color
Vionic shoes gorgeous in person, but very aggressive arch support
Coconuts boots these are so Cruella DeVille amazing. Can't wait to have these spice up some doldrums of winter outfits
I bought these shoes, actually back in March, because I own the matching dress, sue me
I'm still not sure about these patent leather chunky loafers from Nordstrom. I guess if they're not a heck yes... they're cute but I'm wavering because they're supposed to be work shoes, and patent + chunky 90's revival = maybe too funky for my purposes.
Eileen Fisher Rome sandals sole pair half off at work, had to grab
Chico's blouse a playful print and color, really like
Barcelona Bag I splurged on this gorgeous vintage inspired leather bag before going to Vegas. I needed a big bucket/hobo style bag with a crossbody strap and this one just called my name. I opened a Macy's card to get an extra % off and they were also having the VIP % off sale so I got a very good deal on it.
Eileen Fisher nubby tweed long jacket this was something we didn't get in-store at work but was available at Nordstrom Rack--and for an extra 25% off. Win!
This interview suit from Tahari from an online outlet. It's a size larger than I typically wear but it fits well. Super freaking cute on. The cropped tulip hem jacket and cropped pants are youthful without being too girlish and the unexpected color and shape give it verve and interest.
Nanette Dress in Vine from MM. Another Archive Resale item, this is a very pretty and sophisticated color, shape, and texture.
What have you been buying, loving, and returning lately? Share to us!

2021.03.22 23:52 koottravel Yet another permanent onebag setup – Year 3 – The Covid Edition

What a year it’s been, huh? To go from freely traveling with complete agency to a global shutdown, it’s been a transformative year for our little community. I was happily traveling the Yucatan in the early parts of 2020, exploring cenotes and grutas, improving my Spanish, and eating very delicious foods. I'd hear lingering talks of some virus, but what did it matter? The news always goes on about something that has no direct influence on the day-to-day of most of our experiences. Surely this will be no different. Surely...
Due to covid's halting influence on the world, I [temporarily] abandoned my quasi-quest of visiting every Mexican state. I stayed 3 months with my parents in the Floridian suburbs where they chose to retire. It's a place I've never lived, I have no friends, no car to drive, and nowhere to go even if I did. It was... an adjustment to say the least.
I then spent 2 months on a road trip unlike any other with a longtime friend and artist. My friend was already creating temporary art installations out of US standard road signs and displaying them around Miami. When the Black Lives Matter protests kicked off in full swing, we decided we could support the protests, do the art, spend a lot of time camping in the isolated wilderness, and get covid tested a ton.
Then once that wrapped up, I had nowhere else to go. My parents, as thankful as I was for their generosity, wanted their space back. Without really knowing what I was doing, I booked a one-way ticket to Mexico City, a place I had lived for a few months a couple of years ago and therefore was relatively familiar with enough that I felt comfortable essentially laying low there until this whole pandemic thing blew over. And that's exactly what I did.
OK, so why all the backstory? This is a subreddit about what's in our bags after all, not travel or solotravel. Well, I've always felt that how we travel and what influences our travels directly influences and is influenced by what we carry. The bag informs the travels, the travels inform the bag. And, comparing to years one and two, it'll be obvious in a minute here to see how the external changes influence the internal changes of what I carry. I will try to take some time to compare what's new, what's been replaced, what's worked, and what very much hasn't. Oh, and for reference, I'm an early 30s cis-male.

Without further delay...

Yet another permanent onebag setup – Year 3 – The Covid Edition

The Bag – Tortuga Air
To the dismay of anyone shopping for a new bag, I am still using my original discontinued Tortuga Air. Said to be around 27 liters with the option of expanding to ~33 liters, this has been an incredible bag that I have zero intentions of upgrading for as long as it functions. I really wish Tortuga would consider bringing this back as many of the details are perfect. Last year, I had the straps reinforced, but otherwise, the bag has received no other alterations and performs as reliably as ever.
On the outside, we can already see some of the changes, including this generic exercise mat I picked up in Mexico that's wedged between one of the compression straps. I'll touch on this more later, but covid living has meant a change in how I approach my body and my bag is a reflection of that.
On the top of the bag attached to the rain cover pocket, I have a canister with a pair of Eargasm concert earplugs. I have a few friends who work in the audio engineering world and they're always stressing how important (pre-covid) eardrum health is and how much live venues and clubs are doing irreversible damage to our ears. I'm glad I listened and it's nice waking up in the morning without the ringing in the ears. I keep them attached to the outside of the bag largely so I don't forget.
I also have it attached with some WAPAG carabiners. You'll see these a lot on and in my bag and I'm absolutely in love with their many uses, strength, and next to nothing weight. Here, I can quickly unclip the earplugs from the bag and clip them to my belt loop along with perhaps the keys of the Airbnb I'm renting. I found very quickly in my travels to minimize loose objects in my pockets as they're easily lost. I also have these two attached together to carry my shoes when I'm wearing sandals instead.
Behind the workout mat, I have my laptop compartment that I keep locked with the MTMTOOL luggage padlock. What I like about this lock is that it is NOT TSA approved. TSA approved locks are nice when you're checking your bag, but I also double this lock's use for the lockers in hostels and those TSA accessible buttons can easily be used by anyone who wants access to your stuff. The cable lock is great because it can be adjusted to many different sizes and shapes of the lockers out there. You'll also notice on the compression straps, extra sets of double-looped 6-inch Velcro cable ties. I use these for everything, but mostly to compress my rolled-up clothing and, well, manage cables.

The Laptop Sleeve
From top right to left, we have:
  • Kindle Oasis with generic tablet leather sleeve. Admittedly, I don't use this as much as I should, though my Spanish is at a point now where I can read novels, so I think it'll get more use soon.
  • Generic 3ft HDMI cable with an HDMI F-to-F adapter. HDMI is great for attaching the laptop to a tv.
  • USB wifi extender. Nothing's more frustrating than being in a place with good wifi that doesn't extend to your bed. This little thing has come to my aid so many times as I'll be surfing away with joy as others around me struggle for bars. The plus side too is I can set my laptop as a wifi hotspot and share with my phone and friends around.
  • My original ThinkPad X1 Carbon 6th Gen laptop. This thing is going on 6 years now and I still love it just as much. I look into laptops every once in a while and it doesn't seem like they've made significant strides in weight savings, so I've no motivation to upgrade. While this thing is built tough, I do travel with it in both this leather-like sleeve and that all goes within this plush sleeve.
  • Minimalist flying disk. Nice lightweight little toy for fun, exercising, and bonding with others. Just don’t use it with dogs; they’ll destroy it.

The Side Pocket
The side pocket holds items that I tend to grab quickly, often, and would otherwise reside in my pants pocket.
  • Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 2. I caved. I said I wouldn't get into this wireless earbud trend. "I'm a minimalist traveler! I don't need more things to charge!" Well, especially for working out and working out with instructional YouTube videos, these things are pretty great. And at an advertised 20+ hour battery life with USB C charging, I think I'll survive. I've only had them for a few weeks and they were a little finicky at first, but I think I've found my happy place with them.
  • Travelambo coin purse. I'm traveling the Americas which are largely cash-based societies that use a lot of coins. I hate loose coins within my pockets and always feel like without this purse, I'd regularly be losing enough to by a taco here and there. It's small and has a pinch top that's easy to open yet stays closed when not in use. I usually carry my coins, a condom, and some emergency headache pills in here.
  • Generic lip balm
  • Generic aviator sunglasses
  • Generic merino half-cut buff. This thing will often be around my wrist and is both a great sweat band and eye mask for better sleeping.

The Front Pouch
This pouch is also for all my other quick-grab items. From left to right, top to bottom:
  • Samsung S20 standard USB C charger with USB C to USB C 60W 6ft cable. 6ft cables are my ideal these days and I don't know how people survive with less. You can also see this is kept wrap with another one of my Velcro cable ties.
  • Mac’s Silicon Earplugs. Likely the most comfortable earplugs I've found for sleeping that blocks out a ton of noise and is comfy enough when laying on my side.
  • Generic hand sanitizer
  • Crystal deodorant stick. I am a crystal deodorant convert and couldn't be happier. Previously, I was using some powdered deodorant from Lush. It worked fine, but had a strong smell, would leave grey marks on my armpits and residue on my clothes, and occasionally the bottle would pop open and get powder everywhere. Plus, it was expensive. These sticks cost next to nothing, especially when you balance that out against the fact that one stick can last for a year if not more. It has no smell, but leaves you also not smelling.
  • Extra cash
  • Covid vaccine card. Extra happy to have been lucky enough to get one of these!
  • 3oz sunscreen x2 in a generic case
  • Atom Tech 5000mAh portable charger battery with micro USB C to USB A cable. I had a previous 2500mAh version that was a total POS. It could never pump out enough energy to the device and would just make the phone... die slower. And then it stopped holding a charge. I found this out at a terrible moment when my phone died and I didn't know the address back to my Airbnb. Not fun. This one has worked well, charges fast, holds a charge, and can charge a phone that's a 0%. I'm pretty happy with it.
  • Generic black pen. An easily accessible pen is great for so many things.
  • My passport with my beloved homemade duct tape case
  • Generic extra black face mask

The Rain Protection Pouch
This pouch holds two compressed items:
  • Frelaxy backpack rain cover, medium, black. This works decently well to protect the inners of both my main bag and fits well to my day bag.
  • Arc'teryx Norvan SL Hoody, medium. At 300usd, this was definitely a splurge, but one that I am extremely happy with. It has an excellent fit and cut, it feels very comfy to wear, and – most importantly – it does an excellent job protecting from the rain. It also can provide about a 10F difference in insulation when layered during the cold.

Now, let's finally... let's open the bag.
Here's our main view. One the left, we have all the assorted items secured under a zip mesh compartment. Here's that mesh layer opened and here's that mesh layer opened with the sandal bag removed exposing a sneak peek to the items below. On the right, suspended with clip straps, we have two compression cubes holding all the clothes I own.

The Clothes within the Compression Cubes
For my compression cubes, I use the Eagle Creek Pack-it Specter set in blue and red. You might notice from some of my earlier posts that the colors are different. Eventually, the zippers have given out on previous versions I held. I will say that could be due to how I used them, opting almost never originally to expand the compression part and simply shoving my stuff in and then trying to zip it shut. I think this put unneeded strain on the zips causing them to break faster. We'll see, going forward, if taking the time to unzip the compression part fully first will help to extend their lifespan.
The red cube carries all my wintecold weather gear. The blue cube carries my everyday clothes and, within the smaller blue compression cube, my base layers. Let's go through them.

The Red Cube – Winter and Cold Weather Gear

The Blue Cube – Everyday Wear and Base Layers
  • Lululemon Commission Pant Slim 32” (inseam) Warpstreme, 31 waist, black. Okay, pants. What a journey. I was enjoying my Outlier Futureworks a lot, but I also lost a good amount of weight over the past year and desperately needed them tailored. Well, tailoring is great and all except when the tailor fucks up your waist measurements and does such a terrible job that you can fit in them anymore. On top of that, Outlier won't have these back in stock for another 3 months. There were also things I didn't like about the Futureworks. They had no stretch, no zippered pockets, and the fit out of the box on me was, well, boxy and very not flattering. I came back to the states and ordered easily a dozen pants from all of the big onebag brands. After much trial and error, I landed on these pants by Lululemon and I'm thrilled. The fit on me is as if a tailor made them for me. The stretch is great. The look is sleek; easy to dress up and wear to a nice restaurant or event. A friend already said, "Are those expensive? They look expensive." The technical details are really nice. There's a hidden zippered pocket on the left that's advertised as big enough for a passport. It easily fits my Galaxy S20. In the right front pocket, there's a mini coin pocket with a stretch material that snuggly holds my wallet so it doesn't move around within the pocket. If you wear these pants at all cuffed, there's a nice silver-lined fabric detailing that goes up the outer hem that looks very stylish without being over the top. Their durability and longevity have yet to be seen, but so far, I am thrilled with this choice.
  • Lululemon Commission Pant Slim 32” (inseam) Warpstreme, 31 waist, black. Liking the pants version so much, I went with the shorts version as well. The only changes here is that the back left pocket has a diamond snap button and the back right has a hidden zipper. After 6 years, I replaced my Outlier New Way Shorts. I loved those things, but it was time. I had lost weight and was needing a tailor. The pants had faded and were clearly... sun burnt. Multiple people pointed out they were no longer black. So, why did I not simply replace the New Ways? I thought about it, especially with as long as this previous pair proved themselves. That said, they are kinda heavy, have no stretch, and no zippered pockets. These Lulus are lighter and have all those features. Again, time will tell if they'll last, but out of the box, I'm more in love with these than my New Ways.
  • Wool&Prince 130 button-down shirt, medium, gray oxford. The classic OG that I'll probably never replace except to replace with itself (please don't hold me to this if pt 4 has a different shirt). This button down is truly heaven. I can take it to a crowded unground rave with people smoking and by the time I wake up, it won't smell like ciggies while all my other clothes do. I always wear it with a base tee and because of this it can go a long time without a wash. Like... months. It looks great and goes well with my otherwise all-black attire.
  • AW Bridal bath robe, large, black. A... bathrobe? Within onebagging? Aren't we supposed to be cutting weight? Well, like I said, this is the covid post. Slower moving means a different way to approach the world and, what can I say? It's a cozy comfort I've come to love. I got the woman's version because it's shorter, which means lighter and more compact. I maaay get rid of this when the world returns to normal, but for now, it has a space in my bag.
  • Western Rise Session Tee, medium, black, x3. For years now, my favorite tee was the Uniqlo Airism mesh. I'm a person who sweats easily and hates feeling overheated. The Airism mesh was kinda perfect for a while. It was inexpensive, dried insanely quickly, weighed next to nothing, and kept me very cool. Okay, so why the change? What are the downsides? Well, they are thin and that means holes easily appear. I'm fine with a needle and thread, but eventually, they do look ratty. Add onto to that, they get sun bleached easily. They lose their shape easily. They need to be washed daily (not a problem for me and my system, but still not ideal). So, I was in the market for a new tee. I ordered a bunch of merino wool tees. I wanted to like them. I really did. I almost went with the W&P Traveler tee. The fit was good, the little pocket was nice, and rolling into itself was pretty cool. But the shirt itself did not leave me feeling cool even in the mild 75F weather I was around. That's just me and how easily I overheat. So, I abandoned the idea of merino once again. And with luck, someone mentioned this tee in a thread that I can no longer find. The owner of Western Rise u/willwr mentioned its creation was a labor of love. Well, I want to send my thanks for this labor because I've found my new onebag tees. They feel like if the Airism mesh grew up, went to college, FIRE'd, and is now living the dream. It's an athletic tee that dresses up surprisingly well. The mesh elements are a lot closer than the Uniqlo version and feels like a more solid shirt. It's a tad heavier and takes a tad longer to dry, but it keeps me just as cool and I'm hoping that it'll last longer and not have the problems that the Uniqlos have. It also has a nice loop in the collar for hanging.
  • Ministry of Sound's Newton Active shorts. These shorts more so feels like you're wearing comfy, form-fitting underwear, but with some short-shaped-esque fabric draped over it. There are pocket slits on each outer leg of the liner that snuggly fits my phone.
  • Darn Tough's Racer no-show tab ultralight sock, medium, black, x3. I bought a few extras of these the last time I replaced my socks. I carry three, but mostly rotate between two pairs. One of those pairs developed a hole and had to be thrown away after 2.5 years of wear. Not bad. I like how lightweight they are, they pack small, dries overnight, and does a good job with handling the smells. This current model is discontinued.
  • Smartwool liner crew socks, medium, black, x2. For when wearing pants that I’m not cuffing, I'll cycle between these two pairs.
  • Under Armour Men's Tech 9-inch Boxerjock, medium, black, x2. Still my favorite pair of underwear that dries quickly, washes easily, and – with my thicker thighs – the 9" version does a great job covering the areas I need without riding up. Shame though if you're looking to buy these as they've been discontinued.

The Other Wearables That Are Always Worn
These are the items that I pretty much always have on my body and are rarely in the bag.
  • Arc'teryx Aerios FL GTX shoes, sz 9, black. Onebag do-all shoes are impossible and the bane of this community. How can you find a shoe that's good enough for a 2-week volcano thru-hike in Guatemala that you can then turn around and wear to a nice date? Well, I'm not saying I found them, but these come close enough. They're extremely robust for the hiking and technical side and once I spray painted the logos off (flat black, please), they dress up decentlyish. I'm not saying they're amazing, but they do the job. I combine them with the Salomon quicklace kit because I hate tying shoes.
  • Lululemon License to Train men’s hat. Really great, weigh-nothing hat that's breezy and protects from the sun. Gah, I've really become a Lulu hoe this time around.
  • Fizili men’s minimalist all-black watch. Someone attractive recently told me, "You should wear a watch." Funny the influence attractive people can have on your decisions. I don't know if I'm a watch person, but I'm giving it a go. Thought I'd start small and inexpensive and this design goes well with my overall attire.
  • My “minimalist” wallet of cash and cards held together by a hair tie
  • A generic ring I found on the floor of at a rave
  • A generic black face mask

The Sandals Bag
OK, back to the contents of the bag. My shoe bag is just a heavier plastic bag I got from a 7-11 when I started traveling. Inside, there's to be found:
  • FitKicks minimalist barefoot shoes. I'm not sure if these are going to be a permanent addition as I'm still trialing them, but they do hit a few areas that I like that normal shoes and sandals don't. They're pretty great for working out and I don't need to wear socks with them. They sit incredibly flat as they're just a sole with fabric. They actually look decent enough that with my shorts or pants I wouldn't feel terrible out of place with them at a lunch spot.
  • Bedrock Cairn PRO II Adventure Sandals. My favorite sandals. When I first started traveling, I trialed many pairs and landed on these as a favorite. My first pair I just retired after more than 3 years of use. I hiked, climbed volcanos, went to the beach, walked many cities... I did a lot and they held up extremely well. There's probably still some life in the old ones, but it was time to upgrade. These are the same model, but the company has made some small changes.

The Interior Compartment Items
All right, here we have the bulk of the items found on the left side of the bag under the sandals. Some of these items will breakdown into their own categories. Let's dive in, from left to right, top to bottom.
  • ChicoBag packable sling tote. Occasionally I'll see posts on this forum that ask, "If you're using another bag, are you really a onebagger?" I mean... I don't care. Let me explain my situation, especially as a permanent traveler who often travels slow. Let's say I show up to a new city and check into a hostel. For the first few days, it's pretty cool. I end up buying a water bottle, some snacks, coffee grounds, maybe a little laundry detergent. You get the idea. Now after a little while, I've decided I want to stay in the city, but I want to move to an Airbnb and get a little more of a local feel. Well, now I have these non-onebag things I need to transport that won't fit in my onebag. What do? Well, for a while, I was legit carrying a heavy-duty shopping bag and, no joke, taping up the holes as they appeared. Then I switched to a Baggu packable tote and was originally very happy with that. Quickly though, I became annoyed with having to rest it on my shoulder while wearing my full bag or carrying it in my hand. And the way the two-handle system is designed, if it's packed full, the items will push the handles open making it tricky to carry. That and now you have one less hand free, so if you also have your phone out trying to find directions... it's a mess. This packable tote sling solves everything. I have all of my hands free, can still carry my extra items, and the design of the bag and the way it sits on your body means regardless of how much you pack in it, items aren't falling out.
  • TRX Go. OK, let's talk a little about diet, exercising, and weight. In early March of 2020, I noticed my limited onebag wardrobe was fitting a little... well, not fitting actually. It was getting harder to get in my clothes. I went months living in hot areas and when I finally put on my pants, I couldn't. I assumed that all the walking of travel would be enough to keep off the weight. For some, that might be true. For me, it wasn't enough to counter delicious Mexican food and their late-night partying. So, I adopted the OMAD diet (one meal a day), a variation of intermittent fasting. Between March and June, while mostly living in the Florida burbs, I went from 180lbs to 140lbs. I then started making exercise part of my routine. I did a lot of landscaping while with my family. During the road trip, my artist friend and I hiked a ton. When I got to Mexico City, I began with a routine of bodyweight exercises and then moved into a building with a small personal-sized gym with dumbbells and a push/pull machine. That was great and I started to build muscle. After 6 months of regularly working out, I went from 140lbs to 160lbs. While having a gym was great, it’s not reliable for travelers. So how could I bring the gym with me? TRX Go might be the answer. The workouts are pretty intense and do a great job hitting the key areas. I love how easy it is to setup anywhere: a door, a tree, a street sign. And, for a gym in a bag, it packs pretty small. Sure, it's a little awkward and doesn't pack as flat as I'd like, but I'm willing to put up with this. I've been 2 weeks now using the device daily and I'm hoping it'll continue to be my regular while seeing the results I enjoy. Oh, and it’s been a full year now that I’ve been doing this OMAD diet.
  • (Not pictured) Baseus 65W portable 2-port USB C and 1-port USB A ultra-portable charger with USB C to USB C 60W 6ft cable. I absolutely love this thing. It's amazing that something so small can charge all of my electronics to include my laptop. The only downside of this is that it's top heavy. What do I mean by that? Well, if you've ever tried to use an outlet that has been used a lot like in a hostel or a plane, you'll notice that your prongs have a harder time staying within the holes. This thing is a little too heavy in its weight distribution and will often just tip out of these crappy outlets. I've fixed that with...
  • BCQLI 10Ft Long 2-Prong 2 Outlet extension cable. Now some people might think 10ft is too long. Especially when combined with the charger above, now I'm talking about 16ft of coverage. But let me tell you just how much Latin America loves to put only one outlet in a room only next to the door and on the opposite side of the room as the bed. The cable folds plenty small and has saved me quite a few times.
  • Matador On-Grid packable backpack. I've upgraded my Amazon Essential bag to this, which is made of much sturdier materials. It doesn't pack as small as I'd like, but it does seem to be a solid bag in many respects.
  • Amazon 4K Fire Stick with remote, wall outlet, power cable, and generic case. Yet another covid addition. Because I'm traveling slower (I mean, I did rent a place in CDMX for 6 months) AND I'm learning Spanish, having an easy way to turn any TV into a smart TV with the configurations and apps I like is very important. I have all the usual streaming services as well as some geared toward Spanish audiences. I also have a Latino IPTV service with hundreds of channels throughout the Spanish speaking world. On top of that, I’ve modified the stick to get rid of Amazon's crappy interface with something more clean and streamlined for what I use.
  • Eagle Creek Pack-It Specter Quick Trip Toiletry Organizer. We'll breakdown what's in here in a second, but it's a solid case that's lasted me many years.
  • Matador FlatPak soap bar case. This is attached to the outside of the previous item. I gotta say, for as much love as this thing gets, I'm not sure I love it. For an item called FlatPak, it just doesn't pack flat. The process to close it combined with the clip means it sits awkward. We'll see if I end up keeping it.
  • Wooden USB book lamp. I love this thing. Another addition to my comfort items, this little light can turn any crappy lit room into a tranquil cozy space. Turn it on in an otherwise dark bathroom while taking a shower. I swear it’s an amazing way to relax. My version is sold out, but I'm sure there are more out there.
  • Eagle Creek Pack-It Sac Set Packing Organizer, small and medium. These are the original bags I've set out with, so they're doing a great job holding up. I'll break down their contents as well below.

The Dopp Kit/Toiletries Bag
Again, working our way from top to bottom, left to right:
  • Matador FlatPak Toiletry Bottle 3-Pack. Currently holding some laundry detergent, conditioner, and body lotion. I have long hair now and conditioner has become a necessity. I’m also not one of those travelers who tries to go dry everything. Honestly, when you’re permanently traveling, sometimes you just can’t find dry versions of everything and you’ll eventually need a system to handle what commonly comes in liquid form.
  • Matador FlatPak soap bar case again
  • Extra small sized pill bags
  • Salux Japanese exfoliating wash cloth. Another favorite and original from my first days of traveling, it's both a washcloth and exfoliator. It does a great job with lathering and dries insanely fast.
  • Colgate toothbrush with Timoo toothbrush cover. These toothbrush covers are pretty nifty at protecting the bristles and I've yet to have one break.
  • Generic razor from Publix
  • GOBETTER Nail Clippers Set
  • Generic tweezers
  • Bag full of Qtips
  • Assorted medicines with the pill bags mentioned above. I generally carry an assortment of OTC painkillers, anti-diarrhea, congestion relief, allergy relief, Nyquil & melatonin, DayQuil, and bandaids.
  • Travel sized toothpaste
  • Oral-B dental floss
  • Generic comb
  • Tongue scrapper with the handle cut off
  • Manual nose hair trimmer
  • Generic shower cap

The Eagle Creek Organizer Medium Bag
  • Travel rubber clothesline. I get a ton of use out of this and it's not only for drying my clothes. My favorite alt use for this is when you're in a dorm bunk and you wanna create a little privacy. Just attach it to the frame and then throw a towel over it. Tada, privacy.
  • Suprent USB C adjustable beard trimmer. I had the previous version of this and liked it a lot, but when I saw that they had a newer version with USB C, I had to check it out. It seems like they took everything that was great about the old model and made it better. The adjustments have more micro moves for a more precise cut. The body feels stronger while still being lightweight. I use this for all of my hair: beard, head, chest, and groin.
  • SPORTBIT adjustable jump rope. I don't use this as much as I should. Honestly, I'm not a fan of impact workouts. That said, I know they're really good for you. Hopefully I'll start using it soon.
  • Arctic Breeze USB fan. An absolute gem! Perfect example: one time I checked into a dorm with the pod style beds. They're great because they give a ton of privacy. The downside was they had 25 beds in a room and didn't provide any fans. No moving air sucks. This thing moves a surprising amount of air and can make a small space 10-15F cooler feeling. You can plug it into a wall, a portable battery, hell, even your phone.
  • Stack of credit/debit cards. I do the churning thing.
  • RAW rolling machine with hemp papers. What can I say? I like joints and I suck at rolling.
  • Prudence Mexican condoms, 5 pack
  • SteriPen Adventurer Opti UV water purifier. This was a gift that I wouldn't have bought for myself, but I have found it surprisingly useful, especially when staying within Mayan communities that did not cater to outsiders and had no bottled water for sale.
  • Ben’s 100% Deet 3.4oz. Sorry environment, but this works extremely well.
  • Generic pens. Multiple colors are nice with language learning notes.
  • Extra sandwich bags
  • X-small cheesecloth bags. I use these to make cold brew coffee. I'll explain my system below.

The Eagle Creek Organizer Small Bag
  • Kikkerland universal travel adapter with another micro USB C to USB A cable. I still haven't had to use this within most of Latin America.
  • Generic hair ties
  • Stock Galaxy S20 headphones and a generic USB C to 3.5mm converter in a generic pouch
  • HYDAWAY collapsible water bottle, 18oz with cap lid. This is exclusively used for my cold brew coffee system. Basically, I take the cheesecloth bag and the measuring spoon (mentioned below) and soak the grounds for at least 8 hours (more the better) and I always have fresh truly cold brew coffee in the mornings. I say "truly" because a lot of Latin America, if they sell iced coffee, will often just pour hot coffee over ice for a truly watered down blah experience.
  • A bag with an assortment of USB adapters, extra headphone buds, and extra Eargasm pair
  • Extra WAPAG carabiners
  • Standard BIC lighter
  • Extra USB C to USB C 60W 6ft cable with USB C to iPhone Lightening cable adapter (sold out)
  • Generic 15ml spoon. This is part of my coffee system. Before I was just eye-balling it, sometimes using too much, sometimes using too little.

And Under It All...
And finally, to close it all out, I have a Scrubba portable wash bag. I've had a pretty solid experience with this, though I will say my normal washing regimen doesn't involve it. Basically, each time I shower, I'll handwash the basics in the shower with me: the tee, the socks, the underwear. When the time comes, I'll use the Scrubba for everything else. Inside the Scrubba, I store folded my Outlier grid linen towel, sized medium. The towel's pretty great. Dries very fast, doesn't smell for a while, easy to clean, and great for the beach.

Conclusion
I'm exhausted. I've literally spent all day putting this together. If you make it to the end of this, well, bravo to you. I can’t think of much else to put here that I haven’t already mentioned, but I may update the post with additional thoughts.
Oh, and for those curious, the bag weights a little less than 13kg or 28lbs. It’s obviously a bit more than some setups here, but I’m not going for the lightest bag. I know my comfort level and what little things I can add to enhance that comfort. A few grams here and there, when I’m permanently living out of this bag, is of no importance to me. What is important to me is having this balance of comforts and yet still traveling in a bag that’s small enough to go under my seat on a bus or as carry-on with an airline.

Thank you for reading.

TL;DR Edit: If you just want to see the photos, I've compiled them all here.
