2023.03.21 12:56 RedEagle_MGN For those who are struggling to build their indie team, here are some things I've learned
I built a game dev team that's flourishing and I started on
INAT but the challenge was immense.
It's really common for people starting a game project to struggle to get the help they feel they need to make the game a reality. They are often stuck between a rock and a hard place -- not having the funds to pay people up front and not having all the skills needed to make a game solo.
I've been there, but more than ever I found my way out, and I thought I would reach back and see if I can help some others. I built a team starting on
INAT that has grown to 35+ daily active developers with every talent needed to make a solid title. We meet every single day in three different time zones and the team dynamic is extremely positive. 75% of people on the team have a degree in their field.
This article was written for inat but I thought I would share here. 1. Don't take no for an answer
There's going to be a lot of people who push you down, and many of them are just trying to avoid this industry being taken over by “idea people.” However, even if you have no coding skills but talent in leadership, marketing, design or other areas, this industry actually needs you and it is possible.
2. It's going to take hard work
If you're not bringing any skills to the table, you probably shouldn't be doing this. However, if you're a natural-born leader and if you're ready to put in hard work every single day and be really humble about the advice you get from other people, you do have the opportunity to make it happen nonetheless.
3. Humility is important
Knowing that you need mentorship is critical to your success. You don't want to make all the mistakes the hard way. There have been people that have been down this road and who can make your life a lot easier, and you can find people like that on
gamedev.
This whole industry is surprisingly generous, but nobody likes somebody with a big ego who can't take any advice.
4. Be positive about your worst people
About 80% of the people who join these sorts of Reddits would like to have the feeling of making games without putting in the real tough, long, enduring work. They constantly join new projects because they love the feeling of joining new things, but they don't have what it takes to finish.
You're probably going to start by begging kids that are barely out of high school to help you out. Be grateful for what you get. If you're not bringing money to the table honestly, you shouldn't expect anything.
I was able to slowly raise the average age and capability of my team by cherishing those who I got at the low level. I knew they were going to quit in 3 weeks, and so I wrote standard operating procedure documents which made it so that once they dropped the ball, I could find somebody else to pick it up, and it wouldn't be a big deal.
5. Culture is everything
A few years ago, a comprehensive study was put together to correlate factors with a game's success and failure.
Here is what they found:
https://i.imgur.com/okKs9mo.png Vision and culture made the most difference out of any factor they studied. It matters more than production methodology, extra work hours, and all other factors.
If you're going to build a team, you need to set the standard. Think about the impact you want to have in the world and focus your team on that. Don't allow serious deviation from your culture, and double down on your culture.
I had great success by focusing very heavily on a people-first culture. It also has zero tolerance for anything less than professional behavior.
6. No sacred cows
People who violate your culture and who are complaining and putting other people down need to be removed before they cause issues. The best way to deal with this is to have such a culture that you don't attract the people in the first place.
However, if you have to deal with these kinds of people, have the procedures already set in place, so it doesn't seem like it's arbitrary or personal.
7. A big idea, a small footprint
Great games are not great because they are 3D or AAA or any of that. However, if you pitch some very small scale game which you know is realistic, you're also going to get a lot less people that are interested.
This forced me to scope up my ideas very significantly, but I regret that mistake. What you must do is think about a massive-impact idea that does not require much effort.
This is extremely difficult.
8. Live events are the lifeblood of your community
Getting together on a regular basis is essential to help people get out of the mentality that somebody else is going to make this game. Meeting on a regular basis and working together live is critical to your success. Do this regularly.
Every Monday, I have a live event where we all come together, and we delegate tasks to everybody on the team. If we didn't have that live event, nobody would actually step up to take those tough leadership roles that we need to elect people to every single week. However, people feel the burden of responsibility when they're together live that somebody's got to do it, and it's probably got to be them.
9. Let birds fly
When people leave your team to join other projects, rather than being sad about it, encourage them and celebrate it, and they'll remember you and they'll help you out in the future. Don't hold on to people, you're not doing them a service that way.
10. Age is everything
I have recruited more than a thousand people to the team in order to focus in on those who make a difference. The correlation with age and success is incredible, if you get people 30+ you are building a proper team.
11. Don’t promise money
You need to get in touch with a lawyer and set up an agreement right away because you don't want to sort this out afterwards. That said, I personally lean away from making any promises of compensation because in my experience the game's business is incredibly hits-driven and you never know which one makes it and which one doesn't.
It's tough to motivate people to cross the entire Mount Everest of making a game purely on money. I've decided to avoid it but your best to set up a basic revenue split agreement if you need it.
Make a legal agreement but don’t make sky-high promises.
Conclusion
Get mentorship, work hard, build a positive-focused community and don’t speak about money.
Leaders needed
If, rather than recruiting a team, you would like to play a production role in an already established team, visit: Be aware, we don't have traditional managers, rather, we have servant leaders. Expect to lift people up from the bottom.

2023.03.21 12:54 catastrophicallyblue Financially stuck on a toxic relationship
Ok so this whole relationship is a red flag, so I [F26] know some of you might want to slap me because of how stupid I've been to even start it. For context, I have emigrated to this country alone, it's been a tough fight but I managed to get my own appartement and things weren't financially stable, but I was surviving. I met this dude [M27] on tinder, he lived 90km away so I didn't take the match too seriously. After talking for a week, I teased him about coming here and he actually did it (by foot, which I thought was romantic). He arrived with his dog (pitbull) who immediately chased after my cat and bit him, so since that the dog has stayed in the balcony and my cat has been absolutely detesting my bf. He was meant to stay 2 weeks but we were really connecting so he stayed. He stayed 3 months without paying for anything, while looking for a job. I was already struggling, so this actually damaged my bank account quite a bit as I had to buy his dog's food too. He got a job and things started to be lighter. Starting the year, a health condition I had lingering got incredibly worse, I had to stop working and will soon have a procedure to fix it. I knew how disabling it was, so before going to the doctor i told my bf that it was possible I'd be forced to stop working and asked if he could take the most part of the bills as I would be 100% paid, to which he said yes without hesitation. . . As soon as I was on medical leave, he started acting off. He'd go out at night with colleagues and never update me on what time he was getting home. Which caused a lot of fights. Sometimes he'd get home wasted at 3am, sometimes 7am. And always woke me up, either because he didn't have the keys or to look for cuddles. He only walked his dog once a day, so it kept pissing and shitting on my balcony, I tried to walk it too, but she pulls the leash all the time and after hurting me in many different occasions with her misbehavior, I stopped trying to help, as it only worsened my health condition. Not to mention that every house chore was falling onto me, as he never cleaned up, and is so messy that he actually manages to stain doors with grease because he doesn't wash his hands when preparing food. It was too much stress so I broke up with him, gave him time to find a roomate. Then one day he was over and brought someone (without consulting me), and they drank and did drugs (i then learned he had relapsed) until early morning and at 9am i got up to a big noise and my bf having an epileptic shock with a bloody face as he hit something on his way down. I panicked, held him down while screaming at his buddy to call an ambulance. I went with him as he refused to go without me (he wasn't 100% conscious after his shock). At the hospital he said that this episode opened his eyes and that he realised that he was ruining something good with me and that he was gonna settle down. I believed him and took him back. It's been about 2 weeks, the first week he didn't go back to his job because he was still recovering from his epilepsy, and when he was supposed to go back, he didn't. I told him we'd be in a shitty position if he skipped work and he kept saying he'd go back the next day. It's been a week and this morning he said again "I'll go to the night shift instead" to which I replied in a angry tone that it was enough, that it's been a week since he's been saying this crap and that we already owe 1 month rent because of his reckless behavior. So he went. But I came here because I really am at the end of my patience. I struggle with depression and working helped with keeping it at bay. But ever since my medical leave that I've been hella stressed and at this point in this relationship, I just want to call it quits, but I depend on him to pay the bills for at least this month as I hope to be back at work next month. As I mentioned, my cat hates him and so he hissea at him everytime I'm not in the room and has allegedly attacked him, so everytime my cat is the subject of conversation, he insults my cat. I am also not particularly fond of his dog, as it's not well dressed at all, and it jumps at everyone which knowing that it bit my cat, is fucking scary, but I don't talk shit about it when it's the subject. I can't do this anymore. I do love him but his manchild behaviour is killing that. I know that I'm an asshole for keeping him around, I should just break up with him, I put myself in debt to sustain him and if I leave him now, I'll lose everything I worked hard to achieve. I feel like I'm losing my mind. Sorry for the long text, I tried to resume it as much as possible.
TLDR: I put myself in debt sustaining a relationship that is now crumbling, due to a health condition i am in medical leave and bf is now the main provider but is skipping work. I am incredibly stressed.

2023.03.21 12:53 ant26-2 Annihilation legion relics
Looking for advice on relics to take for my necron annihilation legion. My list is below showing the relics I want to take - nightskull scythe, mask of obliteration and the orb of eternity, along with the new warlord trait. However, I think I am handicapping myself by not taking the veil of darkness, and also starting with only 2CP when there are some very good, but expensive, strategems to use with the army of renown.
I'm also tempted to try double skorpekh lords and a different dynasty (either Nephrekh for 6++ flayed ones who can auto advance 6" for objective grabbing, or mephrit for the warlord trait for a more reliable skorpekh lord and the strategem to give me some mortals from my shooting), but Novokh just seems too beneficial to this AoR to pass up.
What are your thoughts?

2023.03.21 12:53 Right_Adagio8099 Gaslighting and empaths.
Warning this is pretty long.
We met first time at an event we were both working. I came from one side of town and them the other. We are amazing together a real power couple, people loved our light and energy as individuals and even more together. But when we got together people from this scene changed. Felt entitled to an opinion on whether or not we should be together. The group he was with gaslit me constantly. His so called besties treated me like crap. Seemed to have an issue with anything I did during my time staying there. buying food, basic necessities, cleaned, purchased a sun bed for people traveling through, did some free side work. This guy #1 threw out our food, shoved the things I bought in a closet and didn’t touch them the entire time. Got pissed when I cleaned his mouse poop infested kitchen. I socialized with the youth there as I’m a youth program leader, asked if this one young man liked reading. Taking notice of his struggling with speech and offered him some cool books and comics. He replied he didn’t care for reading and guy #1 said..don’t worry you don’t have to read if you don’t want to. Then informed me of his disability and that he took meds. I said thank you for sharing that info with me it’s important. Later heard him saying that I was picking on the kid. I also informed the young boy with a new tattoo how to take care of that responsibly (I have many of my own), the guy blamed me for making them feel awkward and that’s why the youth don’t come around anymore. When my spouse and I made things official we decided to lay down boundaries. No ex’s no past flings, we make friends together. My SO said goodbye to this one girl he had been seeing (she had gotten a bf during the time my so and I got together) and of course she got upset..said the only reason she stopped fkng him was bc she saw signs I didn’t want her around. He reminded her that she said she didn’t want a relationship outside of friendship and that she had a bf. Then she started freaking out on him and said what about my sons they love you and want to be with you, you said you cared about me I guess you don’t love me/us like you said. N I told him don’t let her gaslight you or make you feel like you are a father to those kids when she said she didn’t want that. She was cut off after that period. His guy friend #1 got upset about it bc they were his friend and she won’t be around the house anymore. This guy also had a gf at the time who held the same boundaries and later let me know about all the complaints this guy had. They obv broke up bc he treated her poorly. So after a minute things seemed fine, we were very busy combining our business and expanding, planning for travel. We got ready for events that year..the first event of that summer my SO’s abusive ex showed up. We were surprised but brushed it off thinking it was a coincidence, but she continued to come around to the events and then eventually started vending with his other friend guy #2. Found out guy #2 and his ex had been cheating together and now officially together but didn’t mention it to him. First time going to guy #2’s house he commented on a photo of a sports braw I modeled and said..looks like you need to get some work done on those.. Then Guy #1 hired SO’s ex in giving a full position. Still not telling my SO. Next events guy #1 throws Ex and ex fling came around. They both tried talking to me, one even snapped fingers in my face to get attention🤦🏻♀️. We ignored them, his ex started showing up at his parents house and calling his cousin crying. While Ex fling made angry posts about us and then post some really raunchy photos saying you can’t have this anyways type thing. After that we expressed our concerns with the group and the place holding these events…we were met with well maybe this isn’t the place for you. It clearly wasn’t but we wanted to talk things out. We decided to move earlier and my SO went to chat with guy #1 who we lived with atm. My spouse confronted him about everything and the guy freaked out. Said I was enabling him, he needed to get over things, didn’t want us together bc he heard bad things about me (we’ve never had personal conversations only a couple of work convos), also no one there new anything about me period). Told my SO that he couldn’t survive on his own! How was he going to travel, he owes him so much for having him there, we need to get over his ex being around, and said so many other unbelievably ugly things. Moving day..we pulled up door wide open for us, ALL of our belongings were thrown into a room, important equipment broken. We had to make a couple of trips but last one a Youth was there and called #1 ..he pulls up with his 18yo son in car, gets out, slams my SO into my car, his car, then on the cement choking him. I was in complete shock I couldn’t move. Just watched in terror, phone with no reception, neighbors were out tho just watching. His son came out of the car and said that’s what happens when you choose the wrong side.. The one kid came back out of no where and pulled my spouse away and then ran off again. Guy #1 screaming I thought he was coming for me next till I screamed as loud as I could startling him, jumped in our car and drove off. We went to our local safe haven..told them what happened..they reached out to #1 and he said we owed him money..we showed our rent payment. He then continued to make up more lies. Later settling with I broke into his house so that’s why my SO got choked out. This guy sent out a mass email / txt to everyone we knew even out of state saying this. A few ppl came out to ask what happened claiming they cared..instantly gaslit us not accepting facts at all..basically repeating all the things #1 said. We set the boundary of if you are going to hang with that group plz don’t come around us, they got so pissed next thing you know they are posting photos partying it up together🤷🏻♀️. No one else in this scene believed us bc of this group talking shit. Literally ganged up on us. My SO made a post about it explaining why we were leaving the area we supported for years, met with more gas lighting telling us to chill out we got what we deserved. I wish so badly I hadn’t froze and called the cops/ sued this mofo. It’s taken my spouse so long to heal from this heart break. He had no clue how badly this guy had been manipulating / abusing him until he got into some deep therapy. Multiple therapists confirmed it was a gang like cult. I keep going over things in my head bc they did everything to push us out to make us feel like we did something wrong..I forgive myself for one slip up after months of abuse…I freaked out on someone , wasn’t like me at all. Even though ive had plenty of convos with my therapist about it and a couple fam members..i feel some confirmations outside of my circle might help? Thanks for taking time.

You need to get in touch with a lawyer and set up an agreement right away because you don't want to sort this out afterward.

A pneumatic actuated valve is a type of valve that is operated by a pneumatic actuator, which converts compressed air or gas into mechanical motion. The actuator is attached to the valve and controls the opening and closing of the valve by applying force to the valve stem or disk. When the actuator is activated, the valve opens or closes to control the flow of fluid through a pipeline. Pneumatic actuated valves are commonly used in industrial and commercial applications, such as in manufacturing plants, chemical processing facilities, and water treatment plants. They offer fast and precise control of fluid flow, remote control capabilities, high reliability, low maintenance, and a simple design with few moving parts. Common types of pneumatic actuated valves include ball valves, butterfly valves, globe valves, diaphragm valves, and pinch valves, among others. Parts of pneumatic actuated valves 1.Body 2.Actuator 3.Valve stem 4.Valve disc or ball 5.Pneumatic control signal 6.Control system Types of Pneumatic Actuated valve: · Pneumatic Actuated Ball valve: use a ball-shaped valve element to control flow. When the valve is open, the ball rotates to allow fluid to pass through, and when it is closed, the ball blocks the flow. Pneumatic actuators are often used to control the rotation of the ball. · Pneumatic Actuated Gate valve: is designed with a gate or wedge-shaped disk that moves up and down to control the flow of fluid. When the valve is open, the disk is lifted to allow fluid to pass through, and when it is closed, the disk is lowered to block the flow. · Pneumatic Actuated Butterfly valve: use a disc-shaped valve element that rotates around a central axis to control flow. Pneumatic actuators can be used to control the rotation of the disc. · Pneumatic Actuated Knife Gate valve: has a sharp-edged blade or knife that cuts through the fluid and closes against a resilient seat to prevent leakage. · Pneumatic actuated globe valve: have a linear motion valve element that moves up and down to control flow. Pneumatic actuators can be used to control the movement of the valve element. 2023.03.21 12:51 RedEagle_MGN For those who are struggling to build their vr dev team, here are some things I've learned
There's going to be a lot of people who push you down, and many of them are just trying to avoid this industry being taken over by “idea people.” However, if you have leadership talent and no coding skills, this industry actually needs you and it is possible.

Hello,
I've recently purchased 2 x Dell U2723QE monitors and are running it with the following setup:
- Windows PC Monitor 1 (via USB 3.2 Gen 2 USB-A for peripherals)
- My motherboard is MSI B450 Tomahawk Max ATX AM4
- I've found that the USB-C port is unreliable on my PC
- Windows PC Monitor 1 (DP)
- Plugged directly into Graphics Card: MSI GeForce GTX 1060 GAMING X 6GB
- Monitor 1 Monitor 2 (DP - daisy-chained)
- Whenever I need to use my MacBook:
- Connect USB-C from Monitor 1 to MacBook Pro for peripherals + display
- Connect USB-C from Monitor 2 to MacBook Pro with another USB-C cable for display
- Peripherals:
- Ethernet into Monitor 1
- 2.1 Speaker System (line in) into Monitor 1
Whilst this works, I don't like the setup being this messy HAHA and convoluted, and wanted to see if there was any docking station options (looking for SD card reader, Thunderbolt, and for charging, sharing, and cable management purposes).
I stumbled across the CalDigit docks (TS3 Plus and TS4), but wanted to ask before buying on what would be a good setup for these devices above.
I'd ideally like to minimise cables but at the same time, achieve the maximum possible speeds as well as opening up more ports to use.
If anyone could help, that'd be amazing so I can look into this.
Thank you in advance :)
