Hello. I am a new bus driver, working in one of the biggest and busiest cities in this country. A lot of the people I met in training were HAMs. Lots of people on the job are HAMs. Probably a higher rate than most industries. Naturally, it comes from being largely sedentary while working long hours, especially given the mandatory overtime we have to do. What also doesn’t help is drinking multiple sodas and eating candy, chips, or fast food during your break.
One of my line instructors stressed the important of healthy eating to me. He suggested drinking only water and coffee as beverages, to pack my own lunch, and to have fruits to snack on. Mostly common sense things.
The main issue is he doesn’t follow his own advice and it shows. HAM supervisor is at least 100 pounds overweight. He does drink water, but I also see him drink at least one 20 oz Mountain Dew or Pepsi per shift, and have candy or chips (he’s fond of Doritos) as a snack. For lunch, he usually has Jersey Mikes (to be fair it looks like the smaller serving). He also mentions that depending on the shift he works, he eats dinner then goes right to bed, which probably doesn’t aid in weight loss. He also mentions that he and his wife (also a HAm driver but not as severe) will finish pints of ice cream while watching tv regularly. His regular work assignment is 5 days/57 hours, and he is almost always forced to come in on one of his days off.
When I brought up his hypocrisy in a playful, round about way, he laughed it off and said he just had bloodwork done, and he’s healthy. I highly doubt this. Again, he is at least 100 pounds overweight. Even if he eats healthy at home (outside of the pints of ice cream), there is no way he is not at worst prediabetic and has high risk for heart disease. The high stress levels of the job (traffic, crazy drivers, problematic passengers) must also wreck his blood pressure, even when he appears calm under pressure.
One day when we had a 90 minute unpaid break on the schedule, I chose to hit the small but serviceable health center here. It turns out the people who use our center (drivers and cops) are regulars, who knew I was new just because they’ve never seen my face before. I introduced myself, they welcomed me, and told me to make sure I keep my health a priority. They said they’ve seen people pack on pounds like I’d never believe in just a short few years.
Later that day when I had a question about where to turn next, he was annoyed I didn’t study the route during my break. I apologized, and went off on a tangent about how I used to workout regularly before going to training and how I don’t feel good about not working out. Later I asked him how our health center compared to other divisions. To nobody’s surprise, he said he doesn’t know, as he hasn’t seen any of the gyms at the company (it shows). He also mentions he gets here about an hour before the shift starts, just incase of traffic. He chooses to chill in his car or lounge room here rather than lift some weights or hit the treadmill.
For what it’s worth I’ve noticed that nearly all the managers and supervisors are obese. Not just overweight, but obese. Most of them do administrative work, and don’t work on the busses.

Several years ago, Coach Babcock was the coach of the Anaheim Mighty Ducks. My wife’s ex was working for the team, and he was giving us a private, behind-the-scenes tour of the Pond. We parked near the players garage, took the elevator down, and walked over to the team arena entrance. As we were going in the door, my son, who was m, I dunno, 6(?) at the time got all excited and shouted “Papa!!! Who’s that?” Ends up Mr. Babcock had pulled in and parked his jet-black Pontiac Solstice. We stood in the doorway and watched him fumble out of the tiny car. He saw us, basically team-store models, all dressed in our Ducks gear, and for a split second he had a look on his face that said “ah fuck, you fuckin kidding me, this fuckin sucks, dammit” He quickly put a smile on his face and walked across the lot. As he approached the door, he addressed us all. Chatted with my wife, whom he knew by name already (??). Made small talk with my daughter. Signed a In & Out fry sack for my son. After a minute or two, he held the door for us all as we walked into the arena. It was a wonderful encounter, but before we walked away, he called my son over, knelt down, and whispered something in his ear. My son was very upset, and didn’t talk the rest of the tour. We got home, and he immediately took off his Ducks jersey and threw it in the trash. He was inconsolable. He didn’t talk to me for week. He seemed to be avoiding me entirely.
Edit: after the Babcock news broke, I asked him what Mike said like 20 years ago. Apparently Mike told him that in nineteen ninety eight the Undertaker threw Mankind off Hell In A Cell, and plummeted 16ft through an announcer's table.

They do 2 interviews, 1 where they expect you to learn 4 menu items, and then the 2nd where they expect you to memorize the entire menu. Best part is when they end up not hiring you anyways.

I had to put down Sticky (cat 18 years old) because her health has deteriorated and I waited too long selfishly. That was 4 days ago. Now that she is gone. I’m so heart broken I am walking in a daze. I am lucky I am on summer break (I am a teacher in USA) because I don’t think I could handle going to work. I have barely eaten since she passed. Yesterday I ate a Jersey Mike’s mini and that’s all I ate that day, and only because my best friend sat with me and waited until I finished the sandwich. Today I still haven’t eaten and my spouse is getting worried. But I’m just nauseated when I eat. I keep thinking of her and bursting into tears. She was my closest friend for 18 years. I got her when she was so little I had to bottle feed her (I was young, stupid and didn’t know not to take her from her mom so young). And now she’s… gone. I keep looking for her. I knew time was coming and I kept delaying. She seemed fine but when we took her for her end of life care appointment she only weighed 4.5 pounds. I was so mad at myself. The doctor said I did better than her, her oldest cat made it to 17 and my baby’s birthday was March 1. That did not make me feel better. I should be ok. Her passing was peaceful and she was surrounded by loved ones (myself, my sister who raised her with me her first 8 years of life and my spouse who taught me how to care for her properly and loved her dearly for the other 10 years). I need to eat but everything tastes disgusting. And when I try to eat I just end of up thinking of her cause I can’t eat and then I cry again. I don’t know how long it will be before I focus on the happy memories. But right now, I’m not ok.
