2023.03.25 01:15 JingleWriter1 Got a quote for a new HVAC system - is it good?
In the SOCAL area, got a quote for a Bosch AC system replacement. Below is the quote - looking for input on whether this is a good price given the geographic location of just outside of LA?
They said the duct work bit is optional / up to us - they'd recommend it given the age (21 years - AC and duct is original to the home) but not that it's in bad shape now either ...
Finally - I thought the Bosch systems required their own thermostats, but company noted the Honeywell thermostats we have would work fine with it?
Thanks so much !

2023.03.25 01:05 DennisRoadsman My [29M] girlfriend [26F] does not think our budgeting is fair
My partner and I recently moved to a small town for my new job. I earn approximately $100,000 annually, while my partner makes $42,000 working in retail. Fortunately, my partner's transition has been relatively easy since she still works in retail and earns the same salary. Currently, we split the rent on a 70/30 basis, with me contributing more due to my higher income. We split grocery costs evenly and adjust contributions if one of us consumes more. I have a car payment of $600 monthly, while my partner is burdened with $50,000 of debt, which she pays around $400 per month. I feel guilty for making her leave the city for a small town, and as a result, I drive her everywhere without asking for gas money.
Recently, my partner lost her job when the business owner retired, and she is seeking a new job. Meanwhile, I've taken on the responsibility of paying all the bills, including rent, groceries, and dining out. My partner does not believe it is fair for me to ask her to reimburse me once she finds a job and saves money. I'm also unsure about the best way to split expenses moving forward.
Any guidance or tips based on your experience would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

2023.03.25 00:45 OverweightMilkshake Where/how would you rather live?
Please explain why in comments. I'm trying to weigh the pro's of con's of each choice.
I think it would be amazing to live in a city like NYC, no other city like it in the US, a proper city with so much excitement to offer, but is it worth it?
If you live in a "boring" cheap city then you would be able to afford more vacations and even travel internationally way more easily, all the while having extra money to even pursue other things as well, but American suburbs can be pretty damn depressing.
What do you guys think?

2023.03.25 00:44 autotldr UK planning to launch watered down net zero strategy in oil capital Aberdeen Green politics
This is the best tl;dr I could make,
original reduced by 74%. (I'm a bot)
The government is planning to launch its revamped net zero strategy from the UK's oil and gas capital, Aberdeen, in a clear signal of its intention to boost the fossil fuel industry while cutting key green measures, the Guardian has learned.
The revamped net zero plans, including a green growth strategy, will contain major sops to the UK's fossil fuel industries and will miss out on key green measures.
Ministers will also respond to each of the 130 recommendations of the net zero review, conducted by Tory MP Chris Skidmore, and will publish a 70-page green growth strategy, and a green finance strategy from the Treasury.
Ed Miliband, the shadow climate change and net zero secretary, said: "The Conservatives' latest energy relaunch is daylight robbery, a colossal waste of taxpayers money, and climate vandalism on an epic scale. Funnelling billions from the British people to foreign-owned oil and gas companies already making record profits is one of the worst deals in British history and an insult to millions facing the cost of living crisis."
"Carbon capture is not zero carbon; is unlikely to see dramatic cost reductions or be scalable; and is often used for greenwashing by oil and gas companies so they can carry on polluting. It doesn't do what it says on the tin and certainly should not be prioritised as part of a green industrial strategy."
Chris Venables, of the Green Alliance thinktank, said: "There can be no energy security while the UK remains dangerously reliant on volatile global oil and gas markets. A real plan to bring down eye-watering energy bills by protecting the public from expensive fossil fuels must have renewable energy at its heart. Luckily, the government has a whole range of incredibly simple tools at its disposal to speed up the rollout of cheap, clean power. If those remain collecting dust on the shelf next week, it will be almost impossible for industry and business, never mind environmentalist and fuel poverty groups, to take this new plan seriously at all."

2023.03.25 00:16 TheNugeMaster My (31m) 66 year old mother recently got a set of high end dentures that my brother and I pitched in on. She’s had issues that we think might be in her head.
So last fall my mom was particularly distressed because her old cheap dentures were too loose. She couldn’t eat anything and started to withdraw from public because she was embarrassed.
I came up with the idea that my brother and I would pitch in for her new set to get the best on the market. We found her the highest rated denturist in her city. She was ecstatic. The six weeks between her first appointment and final appointment it was all she would talk about. “I can’t wait! You know what I’m going to do?? I’m going to take your aunt out to a nice restaurant and have a steak dinner!”
Fast forward a couple of weeks.
“They’re rubbing along the back and he (the denturist) won’t wittle them down for me.”
Then she started having this other issue. I guess from her pushing the dentures around with her tongue it started cramping or something. Her tongue gets “stuck” out of her mouth whenever she tries to talk. We’ve gone to multiple denturists looking for a solution, but she becomes so negative and hostile that none of them are comfortable taking her on as a patient because the other guy did everything by the book.
We have tried to convince her it might be in her head, but no matter what she skews what each denturist says so that “they’re the one that can fix it.” (This even happened with the last one who flat out refused to take her on. She was convinced he was booking her an appointment despite my brother being in the room when he said no.)
We pitched in for implants for her, but she has a small fracture or chip in her jaw so the implants are too painful.
She won’t leave the house, most days she won’t answer her phone, she is so unhappy and depressed. My heart is broken.
Has anyone here ever heard of anything like this? Is there anything I can do to ease her suffering a bit? She lives in Vancouver BC Canada, I’m not sure if that matters here or not (Canadian vs US?) but I would really appreciate some insight.

I want thank this community for your feedback to a previous post a few weeks ago(
https://www.reddit.com/AdvancedRunning/comments/11emyz2). I posted that I was contemplating adjusting my goal from 3:35 to 3:30, and I got much sage (and some snide) advice not to risk it. Most comment suggested keeping my 3:35 goal and then attempting a negative split. I followed that advice and am very grateful for it.
Background and Training
55M
I started running in July 2020 to stay healthy during lockdown. I had attempted to take up running a few times in my life, but didn’t enjoy it and never stuck with it. But this time was different, and after a few weeks I started to look forward to my runs. Since then I have gone through four marathon training cycles with a local running group. The first (Fall 2021) was cut short by posterior tibial tendon problems, and decided to DNS. The second cycle peaked at 40 mpw, and yielded me a 3:49 finish for the 2022 Tobacco Road Marathon. My third marathon cycle peaked at 50 mpw, but ended with a very difficult race at the 2022 City of Oaks Marathon. The hot day, hilly course, and inadequate fueling resulted in a disappointing 4:17 finish. I walked a substantial amount of that race. A month later, I raced a half marathon in 1:43:23 (7:54 pace), which gave me confidence that a 3:35 marathon was within reach.
The cycle for my recent marathon peaked at 60 MPW, though only for one week. 45-50 MPW was more common. I did six 20+ mile runs and a couple more that were almost as long. Most weeks I did a tempo run and an interval workout.
Pre-race
Did some half-assed carbo loading for a couple of days before the race. Woke at 3:30am for the 7am race. I had a banana, two small croissants, and three cups of coffee. An hour before the race I had another banana, and 10 minutes before the race I had a liquid Gu and a couple of gummy worms.
At the lineup, I saw the 3:35 pacing group, so I asked one of the pacers what his plan was. He said they would go out a little fast and keep the same pace up and down the hills. And if they get ahead of schedule, they would slow down a little near the end. That was not what I wanted to do, particularly since the course is mostly uphill for the first two miles, so I decided to pace myself and try to catch up with them by the end.
Race
Conditions were perfect for a fast race. Temperature began around 34 F and did not warm up much during the race. The course is relatively flat with about 700 ft of elevation gain, the hills are gradual, but long. I fueled myself for the whole race with Haribro Gummy Worms. My plan was to eat one every half mile, which I had practiced in long runs. I carried my own water, with a little added salt, in a hydration pack.
I raced in Endorphin Speed 2, and paced myself with the help of a Stryd meter. I had previously worked out that I need to run at a power of about 270 Watts to maintain a 8:12/mile pace on the flat, so to be safe I aimed for a bit higher than this overall. I started slightly slower than this and ramped up my effort over the first 4 miles and then aimed to stay at around 272 W, equivalent to about 8:09/mile, for as long as I could.
At about 7 miles, my glutes were feeling a little tired, which I wasn’t expecting. I told myself that I couldn’t possibly be fatiguing yet and I convinced myself to ignore it. Things went smoothly, and at the halfway point I checked my watch and saw that I was at 1:47:xx, which was right on schedule for a 3:35 finish. Since my first few miles were a bit slower than target pace, I knew I would be fine if I could keep up my current power. Around this time I noticed that I had been forgetting to eat my gummy worms for the last couple of miles, so I downed a liquid Gu.
At mile 16, I was still maintaining my pace well, so I decided to pick up the pace slightly to bank a little time. I began aiming to maintain a power of 275 W, equivalent to about a 8:03 pace on the flat. This was the point in my previous two marathons when it became noticeably difficult to maintain my pace, so I was amazed that I was still feeling well so far into the race. Over the next miles I kept expecting to hit the wall, but found myself able to maintain my pace.
Somewhere around mile 21 I noticed that my peripheral vision was becoming distorted, which I have come to recognize as hypoglycemia and a sign that I was about to hit the wall. This was not good, since I still had a long hill ahead, but my legs felt good, so I stayed cautiously optimistic. I took stock of the gummy worms in my pockets and realized I had been eating far fewer than planned, so I threw a couple in my mouth, slowed my pace a bit to stay just above 270 W, and grabbed a cup of Gatorade at the next station. Somehow I continued to have the energy to keep my pace going.
When I reached the last aid station, I finally let myself believe that a 3:35 finish was a sure thing. I had 2 more miles, mostly downhill. The 3:35 pacing group was not far ahead, so I picked up the pace a little, with the aim of catching them over the remaining distance, just in case I was mistaken about how much time I had in the bank. I slowly gained on them, and in the last half few hundred meters, the pacers started calling out to encourage me to catch up with them. I stepped on the gas a little, and as I passed the last turn and saw the clock at the finish line, I started to get a little emotional. A few seconds later, I saw my wife, who was cheering me on, and really had to fight back tears. Man, it felt so good to cross the finish line.
Reflections
My number one lesson from this marathon cycle is the importance of fueling adequately. I realize that this is a little dimwitted, since fueling is emphasized in practically every book, blog, and article ever written about marathoning. I had previously paid attention to fueling, but I had not recognized just how much carbohydrate I needed to consume. This cycle, I practiced fueling aggressively during my long runs, and felt a big difference during those runs and in my recovery afterwards. I am convinced that fueling was the most important factor allowing me to maintain my pace and to feel good throughout the entire marathon.
Also, I have found the Stryd meter to be a really helpful tool for pacing optimally. By monitoring power, it is easy to ensure that I am not pushing myself too much up hills and to know how much to pick up the pace down hills. The latter is probably more valuable in a race like this, where the hills are long and gradual, because it is difficult (and probably dangerous) to maintain a constant power down steep hills.

2023.03.24 23:49 Rafael_Bicalho Dafra-Kansas 2008, My motorcycle required too much strength in my foot to shift gears, what can I do at home to fix it?
So I picked up a Dafra Kansas 150cc, which is already a shady underground bike, but It was cheap enough for me to start customizing it, it was unused and sitting in a garage for 4 years. It starts and runs ok but when I try to shift gears I have to put so much force too much just one gear either up or down, it feels like I'm trying to lift a 10kg weight with my foot, which is not comfortable at all, it feels like a battle actually, to put it in second gear I have to put so much force in the foot that I'm basically kicking upwards, and to put it back to first gear it feels like I'm trying to kick down a door until it goes in, does any of you know what can I do to fix it? and If so could you guys walk me through it if you know a video I could watch anything really, I would appreciate a lot because I discovered that the bike is unsalable, no one wants this thing apparently for good reasons... so I'm stuck with this, and since my money went into it, might as well just make something out of it. Thank you!

2023.03.24 23:42 ratzy88 TLDR for those skipping the negro league videos like me
Here's the info on the players highlights in the leagues while we grind for the 90s and 95.
Satchel Paige: Leroy Robert "
Satchel"
Paige (July 7, 1906 – June 8, 1982) . His career spanned five decades and culminated with his induction into the Hall of Fame. On town tours across the United States, Paige would sometimes have his Infielders sit down behind him and then routinely strike out the side. At age 42 in 1948, Paige made his debut for the Cleveland Indians ; to this day, this makes him the oldest debutant in the National League or American League history. Additionally, Paige was 59 years old when he played his last major league game. Paige was the first black pitcher to play in the American League and was the seventh black player to play in Major League Baseball.
Hilton Smith Hilton Lee Smith (February 27, 1907 – November 18, 1983) was an American right-handed pitcher in Negro league baseball. He pitched alongside Satchel Paige for the Kansas City Monarchs between 1932 and 1948. He was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 2001.
Often Paige would pitch the first three innings of a game, leaving Smith to pitch the remaining six. Also, unlike Paige, Smith was a very good hitter.
Rube Foster Andrew "Rube" Foster (September 17, 1879 – December 9, 1930) was an American baseball player, manager, and executive in the Negro leagues. He was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1981.
He organized the Negro National League, the first long-lasting professional league for African-American ballplayers, which operated from 1920 to 1931. He is known as the "father of Black Baseball.
Hank Thompson)
Henry Curtis Thompson (December 8, 1925 – September 30, 1969) was an American player in the Negro leagues and Major League Baseball who played primarily as a third baseman. At the beginning of his career, he was a hard-hitting star for the Monarchs in the Negro American League, playing both infield and outfield. At 17, he played right field in his first season, batting .300.
The following year he was drafted into the Army. Thompson was a machine gunner with the
1695th Combat Engineers at the historic
Battle of the Bulge.
With the start of the major league 1947 season, history was made when Jackie Robinson broke the color line with the Brooklyn Dodgers. Thompson was with the Browns a little over a month and hit only .256 in 27 games, mainly at second base. On August 23 he was released, and he rejoined the Monarchs through the 1948 season
Buck O'Neil John Jordan "Buck" O'Neil Jr. (November 13, 1911 – October 6, 2006) was a first baseman and manager in the Negro American League, mostly with the Kansas City Monarchs. After his playing days, he worked as a scout and became the first African American coach in Major League Baseball. He was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2022 as an executive.
O'Neil's life was documented in Joe Posnanski's 2007 book
The Soul of Baseball. When Tom Baird sold the Monarchs at the end of the 1955 season, O'Neil resigned as manager and became a scout for the Chicago Cubs, and is credited for signing Hall of Fame player
Lou Brock to his first professional baseball contract. O'Neil is sometimes incorrectly credited with also having signed Hall of Famer
Ernie Banks to his first contract; Banks was originally scouted and signed to the Monarchs by
Cool Papa Bell Jackie Robinson You must live under a rock if you dont know Jackie's story by now
John Donaldson)
John Wesley Donaldson (February 20, 1891 – April 14, 1970) was an American baseball pitcher in Pre-Negro league and Negro league baseball. In a career that spanned over 30 years, he played for many different Negro league and semi-professional teams, including the All Nations team and the Kansas City Monarchs. Researchers so far have discovered 718 games in which Donaldson is known to have pitched. Out of those games, Donaldson had over 420 wins and 5,221 strikeouts as a baseball pitcher. According to some sources, he was the greatest pitcher of his era.
Newspaper coverage of Donaldson games reveal 424 wins and 169 losses, 15 ties, and a winning percentage of .697. He also notched 5,221 strikeouts, an ERA of 1.37, and 86 shutouts against all levels of competition. He completed 296 of 322 starts (92%
Donaldson can be credited with 14 no-hitters, two perfect games, and dozens of one-hitters. He also has two 30 strikeout games, 11 games with more than 25 strikeouts (including two back-to-back 25 strikeout games), 30 games with more than 20 strikeouts, 109 games with more than 15 strikeouts, and a total of 203 double digit strikeout games. Donaldson could also hit well, batting .334 in over 1,800 at bats.
Martin Dihigo Martín Magdaleno Dihigo Llanos (May 25, 1906 – May 20, 1971), called
The Immortal and “The Maestro “, was a Cuban professional baseball player. He played in Negro league baseball and Latin American leagues from 1923 to 1936 as a two-way player, both as a pitcher and a second baseman, although he excelled at all nine positions and later as a manager.
He began his professional baseball career in the winter of 1922-23 at the age of 16 as a substitute infielder for Habana in the Cuban League. Over the course of his career, he played all nine positions. As a hitter, he led the Negro leagues in home runs in 1926 and 1935. As a pitcher, he once defeated
Satchel Paige while Paige was touring Cuba.
Dihigo's career record in twelve seasons in the Negro leagues was a .307 average and .511 slugging percentage, with 431 hits, 64 home runs, 61 doubles, 17 triples, 227 RBI, and 292 runs scored in 1404 at bats. He drew 143 walks and stole 41 bases. As a pitcher, he went 26–19 with a 2.92 ERA, with 176 strikeouts and 80 walks in 354 innings
Martin Dihigo is the only player honored to be inducted into FIVE baseball halls of fame. The American, Cuban, Mexican, Dominican Republic and Venezuelan Baseball Halls of Fame.
I imagine the videos in MLB are very good and i plan to watch them later after i finish the Negro league missions and WBC stuff. Very cool to learn about these players. There were some incredible ballplayers unfortunately not given the opportunity to leave their mark on MLB because of their skin tone. Also seems like a good amount of these guys served in WWII

2023.03.24 23:42 YvngTortellini Feel like I’m being taken advantage of, question.
Hi everyone, a bit of a backstory explaining my situation here because I know a lot of you will think I’m some ungrateful little inpatient bastard because a lot of them end up in this industry, and maybe I am one but I figured I’d try and explain everything as best I can so if I actually am one at least I’ll know for sure.
I’m near Toronto Local 353 just for reference. So basically Im 19, turning 20 this year, been out of high school for 2 years and I knew since before I graduated I wanted to be an electrician I spent basically an entire year working at a Canadian Tire trying to figure out what I needed and trying to get in. Got jerked around by a lot of people but ended up learning about the union and I knew that’s what I wanted to do because politically I’m a very pro workers rights person and also the benefits are nice lol. By the time I finished taking the mandatory physics course and gave up trying to get in through connections I ended up calling around different shops to get an interview and ended up getting hired at a huge shop in the city. This was back in October, they told me 2-6 months is how long it takes to get sponsored and become an apprentice. Keep in mind at the time I has no knowledge of the pre apprenticeship process as well.
It’s now almost 6 months in, there are guys that have been at this shop with me that I’m good friends with now for almost 8 months and we still have absolutely no clue when we could ever get sponsored. They hold this sponsorship over our head constantly, I like my bosses but I feel that they fail to understand that I left a very well paying job to work in this warehouse which isn’t what I wanted to do, making $15 an hour, driving for 2 hours a day with my own car and gas money, and I bust my ass harder than any other job because they expect so much of us as “kids who want to get sponsored.”
My coworkers and I all feel were being fully taken advantage of here and even if we get sponsored there’s still another 1700 hours as a pre apprentice which is basically the same bullshit I’m doing at this shop but with an even further drive to an actual site and I’ll be getting a couple dollars extra an hour.
We have tried asking different important people at our company when we could possibly be getting sponsored but they always get angry and say they have no idea and to be patient but at this point I don’t even think the union is worth it anymore, if it’s gonna take me another full year just to become a first year apprentice I don’t see how it could possible be worth it compared to just getting my license and organizing in later.
My question is if anyone here maybe knows how the whole process works and can answer some questions or if there’s anyone I can call specifically at the Electrical Alliance or the union itself that may be helpful in giving me a time frame because more and more every day I want to drop out and go non union, but it would just feel like such a waste of time, money, and effort to spend the last 6 months of my life at this shop for nothing. Thanks to anyone who took the time to read this and help I really appreciate it, also I’ll answer any other question to clear things up I don’t know if this massive wall of text has made any sense at all because this stresses me out so much.

2023.03.24 23:29 Rafael_Bicalho My motorcycle required too much strength in my foot to shift gears, what can I do at home to fix it?
Thank you!

2023.03.24 23:26 FunTurbulent1284 Just want to share my story
It still haunts me to this day. My husband, our 5 year old (at the time) and I were living in Germany in 2014 when we were driving in a local town (thankfully not on the Autobahn) when he suddenly had a seizure while driving out of nowhere and his foot locked out on the gas. We ended up crashing into the back of a city bus. My adrenaline took over and I kicked my door open to get our daughter out of the car and she only had a small scratch on her neck. My husband was thankfully was stabilized after being pulled out of the vehicle but had to stay at the hospital for two nights. I ended up with a broken pinky in 2 places as well as my thumb from blocking his head from hitting the windshield. It was the scariest experience of my life and he doesn't remember any of it, and of course our daughter who is now 14 has every little memory of it..
