I believe the idea of staying with parents after marriage is (mostly) cultural rather than an outcome of low income and other economic issues.
It's almost impossible to get a separate house in this economy but I have noticed that this practice was prevalent in the past too. I have seen a lot of rich people who can afford a separate house living with their parents because they don't know who'd take care of their parents when they are old.
In West, idea of saving up for old homes is kind of normal while in Pakistan, it's a sin to mention old home.
This usual response of "I have to take care of my parents" puts wives in a difficult position too. They can't argue because that would be insensitive. Women, who choose to be homemakers, have to take up additional duty of parents and relatives. Isn't it unfair to them? What about only daughters who have to leave their parents alone? (I'm an only child and when I get a response like this from a man, it mildly infuriates me. What's the solution for me then?)

Hey Reddit... I'm hoping I can get some sort of advice here. It's kinda complicated so I'll try to explain below. I apologize in advance for how long it is but wanted to give all the facts.
I just recently filed from divorce from my husband. We were together 7 years. Our marriage was great... or so I thought. A little background, we both were divorcees who met at work, we became friends and then something more grew from that relationship. I have a child from a previous marriage who's father is not in the picture. My son's father frequently cheated on me and was abusive. He left some lasting damage. My soon to be ex husband and I had a connection like I had never experienced before. No one was trying to change the other person, there was so much love. Everything was perfect. When we considered dating, I laid out all my issues. Told him about my anxiety, depression and the scars my ex left. He accepted them and said that he did not care because he loved me and wanted to help me through the rough parts in life. He said he loved me for me and that meant accepting me and my flaws.
After about a year of dating, I asked him if I could send a text from his phone because my phone died and was charging. He said yeah and handed over his phone. I opened the messenger app to send the text and I saw a message between him and another woman. They were explicit in nature. I freaked out a little and was like WTF. He explained that the woman had known him since high school and she stalks him. He said he was non-confrontational and always humored her in text and eventually she would get bored with him not really ever doing anything and disappear. He said this has happened for years and years. I asked him why he didn't block her and he just said that this was always how he handled it. I asked him why he didn't tell me this was happening and he said he didn't want to stress me out and didn't think it was a big deal. It took a few months of talking about it and working on stuff for me to feel better about this. He said to me I can check his phone any time. In the following months, I had checked 3x. Once I didn't find anything, I decided to trust him again and we progressed the relationship forward.
Fast forward a few years later, we get married. Everything is still going well. We are still in love and everything is going good. We continue on living our lives. He's a good dad to my son despite me never asking him to be (he just fell into that role). We both work and have friends of opposite sexes but there is never any bad thoughts. I had moved on.
That brings us to this year. I lost my job in April of this year (which was a huge blow because I was the bread winner). My depression and anxiety get worse because I'm stressing about money. I keep asking him if we're okay because the relationship was giving me strength during this time. He always said yes we were fine and that he loved me. Then later in April, things just felt off. On my birthday (in April), I couldn't shake the feeling that something was off. I couldn't pinpoint it really apart from my son (who is now a teenager) was acting like a typical teenager and stressing us out. Against my better judgement, I checked his phone again and there was a text message between him and a coworker that was definitely flirty in nature. She was talking about how she would have him and made a comment about tugging on his beard (weird, I know). He later replied in the text messages that "I'll be thinking of you" with hearts. Instantly my anxiety shot through the roof and I confronted him in tears asking why this was happening again. He swore they were just friends and "that's just how they talked". I told him I trusted him and that I hadn't checked in years only to find this. It's worth noting that there were not many texts there to see because he deleted earlier conversations between them.
We ended up going to sleep and talking more the next morning. We worked through it and I apologized for checking his phone and said I should have come to him. He hugged me while I cried and said everything was fine. He forgave me and wasn't mad. We ended up *making up* if you catch my drift. Weeks passed and things seemed fine. I would ask if we were okay, he would say we were fine. He said he loved me and everything progressed as it normally would.
Then about 4 weeks ago, I was in our room crying from the stress of not finding a job. I said I felt so low and was stressed because the job and my son not following rules. I also said I felt like something was off with him lately. That is when he dropped the bomb on me that he felt like we needed to separate because he didn't feel the same about me since I looked at his phone and didn't tell him previously. I was beside myself. I apologized and owned my stuff in that department. I told him I didn't want to separate but if he felt like he needed to do that so we can figure out a way forward, we could. He said he felt like he needed to go clear his head and "do him". I asked about the coworker. He said they're just talking.
So he leaves for his parents house 4 hours away, taking a lot of his stuff with him. We keep talking. A mutual friend that he had talked to mentioned to me that she was also separated from her husband. I asked him if this was completely coincidental and he said yes but that they were "interested in each other". I was devastated. I told him I wanted to work things out but I couldn't support him dating someone else while I was left in limbo while he "figured it out".
He has said 3 things to me:
Since then, we've been on business only. I told him I can't be with him if he won't remain faithful to me. I ended up filing divorce papers earlier this week. It is tearing me up inside because I feel like I was blindsided by this. I've given him everything he wanted so far (on all fronts) - He has no financial responsibility to the house, I gave him $10k out of our savings despite not having found a job yet and asked him to keep working with me but he said he can't right now.
I'm a wreck. I don't want the divorce but I feel like this time he wasn't truthful about the texts with the coworker. I asked him what I didn't give him in the relationship and he said nothing, that I did everything right and perfect. I asked him how he can say he loves me but wants to be with someone else but he said that's the difference between loving someone and being "in love" with them. I told him I knew that he was my true love and in my heart of hearts, I loved him and wanted to make this work if we could. He replied to me that true love and knowing something in your heart of hearts is BS and for fairy tales. But again, he says he's going to see this other woman.
I feel awful now. I feel like I gave him everything in the marriage (confirmed by him) but he just wanted to step out and is mad he got caught. Now I'm left picking up the pieces of our life as he goes and hooks up with this woman. It doesn't make sense because he says he doesn't like kids but she has 3. I really don't know what to do other than what I have done obviously in filing divorce.
How do I heal from this? I have a therapist and friends who are trying to help but I feel like I'm in this endless despair of a black pit. I know I can't force him to see my point but it just feels like everything our marriage stood for is reduced to nothing here. I've accepted my part in this but not once has he. Any advice would be appreciated.

Not sure what to do at this point. I'm an only child and my Mother(75)has diabetes she also lives on Social Security in a HUD low income senior apartment. She's always running out of money weeks before her next SS payment and then she cries and I feel guilty, but I can't give her anymore money without it affecting my family now and we have children to care for. I'm at a loss. The government took away food stamps and shes signed up for everything else I can think of, she cancelled meals on wheels because she hates the food š Rent went up $100 due to inflation. Dr bills, prescription bills are nuts even with insurance in the US..I dk what else I can do. I've tried helping her budget and setting her up for grocery delivery. I'm really stressed and have a lot going on in my personal life also. I'm learning what not to do as I age because this really is ridiculous. It seems unless you're rich and planned well or have a spouse or family that's rich you're fked.

After over a year of trial and error I finally have helped my reactive rescue find his forever home - one that no longer violates his psychological boundaries on a daily occurrence.
In an ideal world, my sweet sweet boy should have never been transported to a major city from a rural southern state. In spite of knowing I was a terrible fit, I knew he would be a risk of falling through the cracks of he were to be returned. The shelter said heād be a BE (in spite of my insistence that heās a fantastic dog just in need of a specific home) because, there are so many dogs that need rescuing that donāt have issues. So I get it. So we slowly worked on his confidence and training until I felt he was ātrulyā adoptable.
I could cry with relief and joy to know that he is finally safe. I hate to admit this to myself, but I do miss him terribly, in spite of how difficult my life was with him, and how much relief I now feel.
But, I know I could never provide the home he needed, and in keeping him for āappearancesā (as in guilt that I was supposed to be his forever home) or āattachmentā sake (I loved that doofus), Iād only risk him surpassing his threshold, biting someone, and/or just, generally living a dismal/ scared/ shutdown quality of life.
The rescue we found his adopter through was just truly, godsend. They prevet all adopters (including house checks), so that folks rehoming do not have to āguessā as to the veracity of the adopter. (So many of people interested in my beautiful boy were NOT informed and blatantly ignored the requirements I had clearly outlined for him, which was very frustrating.)
My intention to post this is to possibly encourage more folks to consider and start the process of ethical rehoming sooner rather than later. Environment MATTERS, especially for dogs with higher supportive needs. Not all dogs can be āfixedā by training and medication alone. That doesnāt always mean they are beyond help. There is no one size fits all hard and fast rule to any of this.
If you know your home is not a fit for your dog, you HAVE options to be their advocate in FINDING the perfect home. Itās not easy, trust me. But I think itās so important to be honest with yourself, because subjecting a dog to the same unsuitable environment just increases the risk that they severely bite/ harm someone, and then become more difficult to rehab. especially for my disabled or mentally ill or low income folks; you HAVE options that arenāt just ātry try try until you burn outā or āBE.ā Be real with yourself and your needs and your ability; if there is a mismatch or a gut feeling, donāt ignore it. Rescuing is messy, and Iām just hoping to share my success story as a possible tool for others to consider.
Ethical and informed rehoming can be a valuable and humane aspect of rescuing. Iām excited that more rescues are expanding their resources to safen the rehoming process.
I am so happy and proud of myself for getting my guy the shot he deserves to live his best life.
Anyways, back to training my other reactive rescue (who I can reasonably accommodate and help within my capacity).

I live in low income housing and my lease is up this week. Due to some issues processing an extension request I canāt push the date out past next week and finding other low income units is really difficult (usually years-long waitlists).
Iām waiting to hear back from UCLA. The next deposit deadline is the 15th. If movement happens next week, no problem. But if they plan on waiting until the following week to evaluate the waitlist, Iāll be in a very precarious situation and will likely have to withdraw. Every school plans movement differently so I wanted to call to explain my situation and ask what their timeline is.
Has anyone else ever called admissions to discuss a situation like this? How did it go?

Hi so I am autistic and I really donāt know how to research stuff like this, I need a temporary home for my 1 yr 3 mo old King Shepherd Cardiac alert dog in training, we have just started training and are still learning the basics (I am not his first owner). I am located in Livermore, Ca. I am not looking to rehome him at this time. I need like services pertaining to service dogs, low income/pro bono eviction/disability lawyers, and a temporary home that will work with me on training him (I am willing to do it myself I just would need help finding somewhere to feasibly do it. My complex is fighting me on housing him right now and saying I need to do a 504 application or something (Iāve never heard of this literally all I was aware was needed was a ESA/Service Animal letter and letter of reasonable accommodation from a health care professional. They are being hella shady about this (I have a neighbor having the same issue and they demanded she provide a doctors note as to why she specifically needs a larger dog and they entered her apartment without prior notice waited until she was at work and stole her service dog in training and gave it to someone who rehomed him). I need to house him somewhere he is safe from someone taking him and keeping him from me. Not only is he my ideal dog to be a service dog he was my fiancĆ©ās dog and best friend in the whole world (my fiancĆ© passed away back in February and I inherited his baby). Iām not advertising or asking for anyone on here to foster him I just need help to be pointed in the right direction. Iāve already called shelters and rescues and they all told me they wonāt foster him unless Iām rehoming him and I truly donāt know where else to turn.

After 29 years in my public service career I find I am in need to urgently find a career counselor (NOT A COACH) or someone who can help me find a new job while also helping me transfer existing skills and identify a means to determine what new skills I need.
If there are any resources like this please share. I canāt afford much of anything: maybe someone can help me ID free/low-cost services in the area I live in currently (I live in the city of Detroit).

I found a job for petitioning paying 20/hr + overtime. Iām helping get a pro choice amendment in Ohio. Iām leaving my broke down car where Iāve been leaving it this last month and taking the flight out. Iāll prob com back having 2,000 to 3000 after all said a done it lasts 3 weeks. Guess I may try to apply for low income housing rn so I can get on a waitlist or something. So, I am an incoming HS senior and am planning on attending UND in 2024. I have severe ADHD and anxiety and struggle with sensory overload and panic attacks. ADHD is a documented disability but idk if it will be recognized as such so I would be able to get a single. I donāt care if I am not in the disability housing area, I would just really like to have a single so that I can better do my homework and manage my sensory overload symptoms. Does anyone have experience doing this/think this is a reasonable request/have tips on when to do it cause UNDās website wasnāt super helpful. Thanks!

2) Defense buildings are optional if the player does not want to personally have to defend settlements against increasing threat levels. Balanced in that defense buildings takes a building slot. For example: Building a hangar bay for fighters increases maintenance cost - instead of another factory increasing production.
3) Default buildings change based on settlement size class. A village might have a small house. That small house turning into a 2-story building when it becomes a town. Ultimately becoming a skyscraper at metropolis level.
4) As an example. A player want maximum profits and/or just enjoys combat. Deals with all threats personally and does not build defensive structures.
Another player wants a huge metropolis but do not want to deal with the increased threats. Sacrifices profit and production to build a lot of defense structures - in effect - automating settlement defense completely.
One player compromises and wants high production and profit, but also wants to make attacks easier and want to skip defending from time to time. So they build some key defense buildings.
Defense structures
In the event of direct player intervention, they will aid you in combat. In the event of the player letting the settlement deal with the attack themselves - they have a simulated combat strength.
The combined defense strength is simulated vs the attacking force. The result can be a range of:
1) Player neglecting a large city with no defenses. Incurs high debt to repair damaged structures, settlers might die in the attack, buildings might be destroyed, unhappiness.

I am beginning to think that we may have made a blunder. My wife and I plunged and purchased a townhouse at the height of the property boom exactly last year. We had gotten sick of moving around rentals and being treated like scum by realos with inspections and exorbitant rents. Also, we were expecting our second so we bit the bullet and overpaid a bit just to have a home base which was fine with us.
The plan was always that we will in 5 or so years upgrade to a more permanent house after making some more savings without using equity/selling the townhouse. So this loan might make the difference between us being able to put a deposit on the kind of house we want at all, and not.
For clarity ā we have about 60k saved between us, have been offered Ā£30k in parental loan and then would look to get about 120k mortgage (with our 40k combined salary) to afford a ~Ā£200k house. Weāre about a year out from starting the house hunt, as we want to cash in a last round of LISA bonuses in May 2024, but I want to start getting us shipshape and knowing what issues weāll have to contend with.
However, Iāve read elsewhere on this sub that lenders will look at a family loan against your āaffordabilityā unless it is certified as a gift, which I donāt think my parents would like to do. My question is how much it affects affordability ā will it reduce the amount we can borrow and therefore render itself pointless? Like the reason it would be useful is to make Savings + ParentsLoan + Mortgage = House Price, but if it reduces the amount we can borrow on the mortgage is there a point at which weād be better off rejecting the loan and continue saving (/hoping for the crash)?

There are a slew of communities throughout downstate Illinois with decent housing and jobs, with several mid-sized cities slowly revitalizing in the wake of the post-industrial exit of manufacturing.
I'm offering this info for people who are tired of the rat race and may have the funds to move, and yes, I know it isn't a simple solution for all poor people. But it's a solution for *some* poor people. I live in a 2200 sf house with a backyard in a walkable neighborhood with two parks, a community garden, sculpture garden, community apple orchard, and am within walking distance to downtown and two business districts, for less than $500/month (insurance and taxes included).
It breaks my heart reading stories of people working so hard just to survive due to high costs of living. Maybe this is an option for you?

The president and his advisers routinely tout statistics that show how the economy is surging by most traditional economic metrics, seemingly mystified about why the American public isn't giving Democrats more credit for this boom.
Last week, as the president delivered remarks on the January jobs report, he highlighted that in his first year in office, the economy created 6.6 million jobs.
"If you can't remember another year when so many people went to work in this country, there's a reason: It never happened," Biden said, telling reporters to look at economic statistics dating back 40 years to President Ronald Reagan. "History has been made here," he said.
But there's piece of economic data reaching levels not seen in 40 years: inflation. And that's an issue that Biden and his White House have struggled to address.
On Thursday, new data showed consumer prices are up 7.5% from where they were a year ago. Inflation is at its highest point since 1982 as the cost for food, electricity and shelter soar.
Biden didn't focus on inflation during his Virginia trip ā despite the new data
Shortly after the inflation data was released, Biden traveled to the Virginia district of Democratic Rep. Abigail Spanberger. She was first elected in 2018 in a former Republican stronghold by a narrow margin, and Republicans are working hard to flip the district in November.
Democrats like Spanberger in vulnerable districts have urged the White House to spend less time on its proposal for massive spending on the social safety net and more time on inflation and other economic issues.
While Biden briefly acknowledged that food and gas prices are up, he kept his focus on his plan, known as Build Back Better ā arguing that it would lower costs for things like prescription drugs and childcare.
"You want to lower the cost of living for people ā lower them in these areas," Biden said about his plan.
The plan has passed the House of Representatives, but seems all but dead in the Senate, where Democratic Senator Joe Manchin has said he opposes new government spending, given inflation.
Inflation is surging, and that's hitting voters where it hurts
Despite the many positive economic data points seen this year, economists and analysts say that people experience inflation on a visceral level ā and that gives it outsized influence.
"Inflation is something people feel in a different way than they do other economic indicators," said Jack Lew, who was Treasury secretary during the Obama administration. "The price of gas is reflected every time you get a tank of gas."
Larry Summers, director of the National Economic Council under President Barack Obama, has been sounding the alarm on inflation for months.
"More unemployment is the difference between a job and not a job for 2 or 3% of the population. More inflation is higher prices for 100% of the population," Summers said.
Inflation makes people unhappy in ways that are disproportionate to the actual concerns that economists have about inflation, he said.
"People tend to think that ... higher prices are something that's being stolen from them," Summers said.
