2023.06.01 21:11 WideMix8098 Do not buy from Express Motorsports in Lawrence Massachusetts. Huge warning

Don’t buy from these people. Don’t even think about it. I bought a 2008 Honda CRV for 8,000 from them in January, and by March the dashboard lit up with engine codes. The engine was completely dead by April, about 90 days after I bought the car. After basically threatening to sue them, they reluctantly agreed to trade for a car of much less value. I eventually decided against trading in fear of getting more problems from them. I sold the car to get not even half of my money back. There is no explanation for dropping a valve randomly after doing nothing but if anything, overly maintaining this car. This was the first car I owned in 2 years and it took a long time to save up this money, doing research and careful planning for nothing and a bad attitude when I came to them with my dead car they sold me. I would stay clear of this place at all costs. This is a warning.
Here is the copy of the timeline I sent to my lawyer:
Hi Kevin,
I bought an 08 Honda Crv from Eduardo Contreras at Express Motorsports Dealership in Lawrence, Massachusetts. I’ve done nothing but try to maintain the vehicle and the engine was dead within 2 months of purchasing the car.
Here is a timeline of events.
Jan 10 2023 at 4:30pm Traveled to Lawrence, Massachusetts to look at the vehicle which is a 2008 Honda Crv ex sport utility. Was told the “total loss” on the CarFax was a mistake the insurance company made with only minor front end damage. Was told the title was always clean. After reviewing the CarFax further it appears it had both a salvage and rebuilt title issued then later corrected in “error” then a clean title was issued. Put a $500 deposit down on the vehicle. At the time the dealership had no negative reviews. However on or around the time I bought my vehicle they received many negative reviews similar to mine.
January 12 2023
Bought my insurance policy for the vehicle.
January 17 2023
Was issued a temporary license plate to transport the vehicle from the dealership to my residence.
January 18 2023
Purchased the vehicle for 8,000. Was told the purchasing contract included a 30 day warranty for the entire vehicle. Purchaser contract had no disclosure of being subject to recalls. Tmps light was only light on the dash.
January 20 2023
Registered the vehicle.
February 9th 2023
Vehicle passed state inspection.
Between February 9th and March 15th (can get exact date)
A letter was issued describing multiple airbag recalls dating back to 2016.
March 24 2023
Engine started shifting gears harder. No engine light. Oil life at 60%. Last oil change was preformed 121,500 miles. At 123,800 I preformed an oil change using the same oil that was written on the last oils change sticker. The oil life never increased.
March 26 The airbag light, check engine light, and hazardous conditions light turned on and never turned off. Developed a p303 engine code. Mechanical problems including engine misfire on cylinder 3 and a hard start. Mechanical issues never improved even after a tune up and attempting to fix all possible causes. List of what I spent to try and fix with receipts.
Spark plugs Coil packs Battery Fuel injector Tools Sea foam Oil Mass airflow cleaner Throttle body cleaner
April 3rd
Took vehicle to Honda dealership to replace airbags and have misfire diagnosed. Honda dealership declared engine failure with a dropped valve. Was quoted 3,000 to fix.
Communicated with Eddie the mechanical issues and requested compensation for selling me a dead engine. I asked questions regarding my warranty and discovered I was never given an official warranty in writing. Eddie said “ we have you a 30 day warranty on the engine and transmission only. It is in the purchase contract.” However upon inspection it was not. Asked him about the vehicle being subject to recalls and he denied that it was. This is when I discovered the odd verbiage on the CarFax about a rebuilt title issued in error after an insurance company deemed the car a total loss. Eddie agreed to give me a car of lesser value, then listed said car. Eddie insisted on communicating through voice notes and over the phone and not through text. I was not able to communicate over the phone at that time.
Arranged to trade cars on May 11th, however on Tuesday April 11, my engine started smoking and it is not safe the transport the vehicle back to Massachusetts. Also after reading a negative review about someone in my similar situation trading in a car to him, then later that car wasn’t suitable as well, I decided not to trade in. Id rather have my money back so I can purchase a safe, reliable vehicle than gamble with doing business with him again and trusting his vehicles.

2023.06.01 20:57 Tusker26 Letting It Set For A While, Now What?

I have a very new keyless flute that Ive let set for a couple of years in its’ case. There have been no temperature nor humidity extremes. The flute and case just set on a shelf inside my house for that time. Upon inspection of the sections and joints, the flute seems to be fine. What should I consider or do prior to picking it up again? I was considering a light oiling and letting it set for 24-hours, before trying to assemble and play.

2023.06.01 20:20 JacobviBritannia I don't know how to explain what happened to me at Sunset Grove

For a long time, I thought there was no greater feeling of dread than clocking into a job you hate. Three days a week after school and every other weekend, there I was, standing in front of the time clock at Sunset Grove. By the time I was sixteen, my parents told me that I had to find a job and start working. Unfortunately, there weren’t many options for a sixteen-year-old looking for work in Driftwood. It was either fast food, retail, or a retirement home. For whatever reason, I chose the retirement home.
It’s not that I had a problem with starting work at that age, it’s just that scrubbing pureed vegetables and mashed potatoes off fifty plates a night, with the cook yelling over my shoulder to pick up the pace, wasn’t exactly fulfilling work. The pocket money was nice, though. There’s nothing better than being a teenager with almost nothing but disposable income.
I watched the digital clock tick over from 3:59 to 4:00, begrudgingly typed in my employee ID, and made my way to the kitchen. As always, there was a stack of dishes left over from the shift before mine that would leave me playing catch-up for the rest of the night.
Becca, a thirty-something waitress with pale skin and a slim figure, swept through the doors as I was working through my stack. She was the only member of the wait staff I knew who could manage to keep a sunny disposition no matter how bad the day got.
Her shoulders seemed to relax a little when she saw me. “Hey, Arty, I need glasses.”
“Got it,” I replied.
“Thank you!” she said in a sing-song voice as she picked up a tub of silverware and rushed back out the doors. The wait staff was always in a rush this time of day. They only had about a half-hour to set the tables before some of the early-birds started showing up for dinner.
I loaded a tray with glasses and sent them through the commercial steam washer to my left, pulling the hood down with a heavy metal clunk. Once they were done, Becca came through and took the tray out to the dining room.
Before long, the cook began setting out room service trays. I never understood why it was the dishwasher’s job to deliver room service, but nevertheless, I began loading the trays into my cart. Most room service orders came from the same residents, which meant I’d long since worked out the most efficient way to load the cart. As I was loading, I noticed one of my regulars, room 2H, was missing. It could have been that she just decided to have dinner in the dining room today, but as long as I’d been working at Sunset Grove, I’d never known 2H to have dinner anywhere but her room.
As I walked down the hallway past 2H, I realized why. There on the door was a small laminated sign with a photo of the woman who’d lived in 2H.
Lilith Holmes 1928 - 2014
That was it. Just a name and a pair of dates. Not even a “Rest in Peace.” But it got the point across. I felt a tinge of guilt at the fact that I hadn’t known the woman’s name. I’d been working at Sunset Grove for a year, and I still referred to most of the residents by their room numbers.
This wasn’t the first of these types of signs I’d seen. There had been two or three deaths in the past year, each one memorialized with a cheap laminated sign that would be taken down after a week or two. It may sound callous, but I was never bothered by the deaths. They were simply a fact of life working in a place full of people entering the final phase of their lives. It helped that I didn’t make much effort to get close to the residents. I never wanted this place to bleed into what I considered to be my real life, so whenever I was at Sunset Grove, I was in “work mode.” I would put on a kind face, greet coworkers and residents with a smile, and otherwise speak only when spoken to. It was easier that way.

Room 2H stayed empty for a month. The sign, as they always do, disappeared after a while. I wondered if that meant they’d already cleaned out all of Mrs. Holmes’s belongings or if they were still entombed behind that locked door.
Eventually, the day came that I had a room service tray for room 2H again. It seemed so sudden. I hadn’t heard anything about a new resident moving in. I shrugged it off and loaded the tray onto my cart, thinking it must have happened on one of my days off. I hoped the new tenant wouldn’t be a handful. I may not have known Mrs. Holmes well, but she was always nice and courteous to me when I brought her her food. It’s more than I could say for some of the other residents.
I rode the elevator up to the second floor. Room 2H was my second stop from there. I knocked and pushed open the door into the dimly lit room. The blinds were all drawn, and there was only a single table lamp turned on in the corner across the room. I could see the new tenant sitting in a recliner on the opposite wall. It was a woman, with curled white hair that fell to her hunched shoulders. In the dark, I couldn’t make out her face, but her form was familiar. As I got closer, I realized it was Mrs. Holmes sitting in the chair.
I faltered. “I... have your dinner here for you, ma’am,” I stammered.
“Oh, good,” she said. “Set it on the table here, dear.” Her tone was jovial like always, though it felt strained. As if she were forcing it.
I set the tray down on the end table beside her. As she turned to look at it, her eyes seemed to catch the tiny amount of light in the room and glowed for a split second.
“Thank you,” she chimed.
“You’re welcome,” I said, turning on my heel and heading for the door.
I stopped by the second floor nurse’s station on my way down the hall and found Ted inside. He was a middle-aged man with salt-and-pepper hair, known around the facility for his eccentric taste in scrubs. Today’s were navy blue with a messy pattern of stars. Ted was the only nurse I knew by name, mostly because he gave me no other choice. It was common knowledge at Sunset Grove that if Ted wanted to chat you up, there was nothing you could do to stop it.
“Hey, Ted,” I said, poking my head around the door.
“Arthur!” he called, sitting back in his chair. “To what do I owe the pleasure?”
“I saw Mrs. Holmes is back,” I said. “What happened? Why was she gone?”
“Sorry, bud, I shouldn’t really be gossiping about that.”
“I understand. It’s just... there was that sign on her door a while ago. I thought she died.”
“Oh, that,” Ted laughed. “That was a little misunderstanding. But as you saw, she’s alive and well.”
“Right,” I said. “I should go. I’ve still got a cart full of meals to deliver.”
“Best not keep ‘em waiting!” Ted joked as I left the nurse’s station.
I couldn’t stop thinking about Mrs. Holmes for the remainder of my shift that night. How could the nurses make such a drastic mistake, confusing a resident for dead? And where exactly had Mrs. Holmes been for the past month? At the hospital? With family? The whole thing irked me more than it probably should have. I didn’t like thinking about this place during my time off, but thoughts of Mrs. Holmes stuck with me all week.
I delivered room service to her the rest of the week. Each time I entered 2H, the blinds were drawn, the room kept dark. As always, I set her tray down on the end table next to the recliner, she thanked me, and I moved on to the next room.
The next stop on my route was 2K, Ms. Ganz, whose name I only knew because she had a reputation around the building for being very outwardly spoken. There was rarely a week that went by where I wasn’t overhearing the nurses laughing about something Ms. Ganz had said that day.
Most days, Ms. Ganz left her door open. I knocked anyway and passed through the open frame. She was sitting on the edge of her bed, rubbing her temples before she looked up and saw me.
“Set it down right there,” she instructed, pointing to the rolling TV stand where she took her dinner every day.
I did as she said and set the food down on the stand, forcing a smile for good measure. She scooted off the bed and hobbled over to the chair to sit down. I pushed the stand closer to her and lowered it down so she could reach. She examined the tray, then picked up the pudding cup and handed it to me.
“You take that,” she said. “I don’t need it.”
“That’s alright,” I protested. “I don’t need it either.”
Ms. Ganz pawning her desserts off on me was beginning to become a habit. As I tried to set the pudding cup back on the tray, she pushed it back toward me. It clearly wasn’t a fight I was going to win, so I relented and accepted the pudding.
Ms. Ganz got to work preparing her coffee, which she had with every meal. I always loaded her tray with three creams and three sugars, but I’d learned in time to wait until she finished mixing before I left because, more often than not, she’d ask for more.
“Is this decaf?” she asked.
“That’s right,” I said.
She grumbled. “I need caffeine. People keeping me up all night. Knocking on my door.”
“Knocking on your door?”
“Middle of the night,” Ms. Ganz exclaimed. “They come, they knock, I open the door, and they’re gone. My family doesn’t pay $2000 a month for me to get pranked all night long.”
“Have you talked to the nurses about it?” I asked.
She snorted. “They’re probably the ones doing it.” Ms. Ganz winced and reached for her forehead. “Now, I’ve had this headache all day thanks to them.”
“Sorry about that. I hope you feel better,” I said as I made my way out of the room.
It became apparent very quickly Ms. Ganz wasn’t the only resident dealing with these problems. I overheard the nurses talking about multiple residents on the second floor complaining about someone knocking on their door at night. It only got worse throughout the week, with even more residents complaining. There were more complaints of headaches, too. Some residents even started exhibiting symptoms of fever.
When I came to serve Ms. Ganz her dinner a week later, her door was shut. I knocked and turned the handle. It wasn’t locked, so I went inside. Ms. Ganz was lying in bed, a fresh sheen of sweat shimmering in the light across her forehead. She hadn’t even touched her lunch. I quietly swapped the trays, trying not to disturb her and tip-toed out of the room, stopping by the nurses’ station before I got back to work. Ted was there again, wearing a loud, floral-patterned set of scrubs this time.
“Hey, Ted, is Ms. Ganz alright?” I asked.
“She’s just a little under the weather,” he said. “She’s not the only one. There’s some kind of bug going around.”
Ted scooted his chair across the room and pulled something out of a box. He tossed me a medical mask.
“You should probably wear one of these while you’re goin’ into rooms,” he said.
I nodded and put the mask on, leaving Ted to his work. There were four more residents laid up in bed on the second floor. Weirdly, no one on the first or third floor seemed to be affected.
Things only seemed to get worse as the days went on. More and more residents were laid up with fevers. Soon enough, no one on the second floor was healthy enough to go to the dining room, which meant my room service runs were getting longer by the day. Now that I had to deliver trays to every room on the second floor, there was no way I could get it done on my own, but even with Becca helping me with runs, I was still clocking out of work an hour late most nights.
As we rolled the cart up to room 2H, Becca hesitated.
“Do you mind getting this one?” she asked.
I raised an eyebrow. “Sure.”
I had no problem bringing Mrs. Holmes her food. What caught me off guard was the way Becca seemed to give the room a wide berth as we passed and the trepidation in her voice as she spoke.
“Thanks, Arty,” Becca said. “Something about her just creeps me out. Don’t you feel that?”
“It’s a little weird how she sits in the dark all the time,” I admitted, “but I wouldn’t call it creepy.”
“So brave,” Becca teased. “I’ll bring Ms. Ganz her tray and meet you down the hall.”
“Sounds good.”
I knocked on the door and went into 2H. As expected, Mrs. Holmes was seated in her recliner with the blinds drawn and the single lamp on in the corner. Sometimes I wondered if she ever even moved from that spot.
“How are you feeling, Mrs. Holmes?” I asked through the medical mask I was now required to wear at all times while on the second floor.
“Are you a nurse now?” She asked. Her tone seemed intended to be joking, but it came across more accusatory.
“No, it’s just that we can’t seem to get rid of this bug going around. I was just curious if you were still feeling alright.”
“I’m fine,” she said flatly.
Mrs. Holmes was the only resident on the second floor who wasn’t sick. The bug hadn’t spread to any of the staff members either. A thought occurred to me.
“Have you heard anyone knocking on your door at night?” I asked.
Mrs. Holmes’s eyes shot to mine, momentarily glowing in the light as they had once before. She stared at me with wide eyes that seemed to be studying me.
Finally, her tight lips peeled apart and she simply said, “I have not.”
Suddenly, I understood why Becca hadn’t wanted to come in here. I could feel the goose flesh spreading across my arm and a shiver run down my spine. I didn’t want to linger here any longer than I had to.
“Have a good night,” I said, mimicking my usual tone, before hustling out of the room.
I grabbed the cart and pushed it quickly down the hall toward Ms. Ganz’s room where I would find Becca, but as I rounded the corner, I saw a crowd of nurses surrounding the door. Becca was standing off to the side, a distraught look on her face.
“What happened?” I asked.
“I went in to give her her food,” Becca choked out. “Her eyes were open, so I thought she was awake. So, I asked her if she had enough cream and sugar for her coffee, but she didn’t respond.”
“Oh no,” I realized.
“That’s never happened to me before,” Becca said. “I’ve never seen one of them after... after they died. Sorry, Arty, I need to take five. Do you think you can finish this yourself today?”
“That’s fine. I’ve got it.”
Becca laid her hand on my shoulder as she walked away, her other hand combing through her hair.
Becca didn’t come in the next day. With the wait staff being short handed, I had to do the room service deliveries myself. I hesitated before going into 2H, but when I reached for the handle, I was relieved to find that it was locked. Some of the nurses must have been inside, so I left the tray by the door and went on my way.
As I passed by Ms. Ganz’s room, I saw the sign.
Mallory Ganz 1939 - 2014
She was about ten years younger in the photo, smiling next to her daughter. I felt a tug inside my gut and suddenly realized I wanted to know what was happening. Where was this sickness coming from? Why wasn’t it affecting the residents on the first or third floors or the staff? And why was Mrs. Holmes the only resident on the second floor who was still healthy?
I finished delivering trays and stashed the cart in the corner. I figured I had at least ten more minutes before my boss would start wondering where I was, so I found Ted in the nurse’s station.
“Hey, Ted, are you busy?” I asked.
“Never not busy, Arthur,” he grinned. “What can I do for you?”
“You’ve heard the residents complaining about someone knocking on their doors at night, right? Do you have any idea what that might be about?”
He sighed. “Yeah, I’ve heard all about it. Best I can figure, it’s someone screwin’ around on the night shift.”
“Well, there are cameras, right? Couldn’t we find out who’s doing it?”
Ted’s brow furled. “Why are you so interested?”
“I don’t know,” I lied. “I guess it’s just that, whoever it was, they were bothering Ms. Ganz. I thought maybe we could find them and get them to stop to, like, honor her in a way.”
Ted pushed an office chair toward me with his foot. “Sit down a minute. I’ll pull up the footage.”
“Thank you.”
I sat down and watched Ted scrub through last night’s security footage. It was strange seeing the hallway so empty. During the daytime hours, there were constantly nurses or housekeepers coming up and down the halls, but at night, they were dead.
Suddenly, there was a flash of movement on the screen. Ted let go of the mouse and let the footage play out in real-time. I felt my chest tighten as I recognized the figure on the screen. Mrs. Holmes. I watched her walk down the hall, moving with an unnatural weightlessness for her age. She stopped in front of Ms. Ganz’s room and knocked on the door. Then, all of a sudden, she just faded away.
I leaned in closer to the screen. Ted sat upright in his chair.
“Was that a glitch?” I asked.
“I don’t know,” he said. “The timecode looks normal, but it must’ve been. Either way, I guess we know who’s been causin’ trouble at night. I’ll have a word with Mrs. Holmes.”
“I don’t know if that’s a good idea,” I blurted out.
Ted looked at me quizzically. I didn’t know how to explain it, but I knew something was off about Mrs. Holmes. There was no telling what would happen if someone confronted her, but how was I supposed to convince Ted of that?
“Sorry,” I said. “Thanks for the help, Ted.”
I left the nurse’s station without saying another word. I could only hope that my initial warning would be enough to make Ted hesitate until I could figure out what to do next.
My heart dropped when I couldn’t find Ted the next day. He was always there. Every single weekday, he was there.
None of the other nurses had seen him either. Apparently, he hadn’t called out sick or anything. As far as anyone knew, he simply hadn’t shown up for work. But I knew better. I knew he’d gone and talked to Mrs. Holmes, and she’d done something to him. Could he still be there, inside room 2H? Was he still alive? Had he mentioned me?
I worked the first hour of my shift constantly looking over my shoulder. By 5:00, the cook started lining up room service trays. I was on my own again. Apparently, Becca was taking some time off after what she’d been through. I couldn’t blame her, but I found myself desperately wishing I didn’t have to be alone.
My heart thumped with dread every step I took toward room 2H. I prayed the door would be locked again, but no such luck. I pushed the door open slowly and let the light from the hall flood into the dim room. Mrs. Holmes was in her recliner, but as I got closer, I noticed her eyes were shut. She was asleep.
I set the tray down quietly and made for the door, but before I left, I felt curiosity tug me back. I wanted to know what happened to Ted. If there was any trace of him in the room, this might be my only chance to find it.
I inched heel-toe back through the entryway and into the bedroom. I found an antique lamp on the nightstand and flipped it on, bathing the room in a hazy yellow light. The room was pristine, not even a crease in the bedding. I didn’t know what I was looking for. Blood? A body? Just anything that would confirm the insane thoughts that were running through my mind.
I moved to the bathroom, but, like the bedroom, it was spotless. I checked every inch of it, even getting down on my hands and knees to inspect the bath mat for blood stains. I was starting to feel like a lunatic. Maybe everything that was happening was exactly what it seemed, and the rest of it was all just in my head.
Feeling a little ridiculous, I stepped out of the bathroom, gently closing the door behind me.
“What were you doing in there?” Mrs. Holmes’s voice was sharp and sent a jolt of fear through my body.
I turned and saw her standing in the corner by her recliner. She looked tall—her shoulders not slumped like usual, and her eyes were glowing in the light again.
I didn’t know what to say. “S-sorry,” I spat out, then hurried for the door. Mrs. Holmes stood motionless, watching me go.
Thanks to my little investigation, dinner was nearly over by the time I got back to the kitchen, and there was a mountain of dishes waiting for me by the sink. I shook off the unsettling thoughts plaguing my mind and got to work. It was going to be another late night, and it only got worse when the cook brought over a stack of burnt pans that would take ages of scrubbing to get clean.
It was nearly an hour past the end of my shift by the time I’d finally finished all the dishes. The wait staff had clocked out thirty minutes ago. That was fine. I was used to being the last one in the kitchen. It was the dishwasher’s job to clean the floors at the end of the night after everyone else had gone home. That night, though, I should have been scared, but the weight of being alone hadn’t hit me yet. My mind was too preoccupied with work.
I finished mopping the floor, meaning all that was left was to take the trash out to the dumpster. I gathered up all the bags and took them out into the hallway, then out the back door. I set the bags down and propped the door open with a pen. After 8:00, the building locked down, and I would need a keycard to get back in, something the facility didn’t grant to dishwashers.
I hoisted the garbage bags into the dumpster and turned back toward the building. Before I could even take a step back toward the door, though, I heard it clunk into place. I ran over and tugged on the handle. Locked. I’d have to walk all the way around the building and come in the front entrance, probably scaring the hell out of the secretary at the reception desk, who certainly wouldn’t be expecting anyone to come in at this hour.
Crickets chirped loudly in the fields around the parking lot as I rounded the building. There was no one at the reception desk when I walked in. The secretary was probably out having a cigarette somewhere. I walked through the dining room and back into the kitchen, letting the door swing freely behind me. I heard it brush across the frame once, twice, then suddenly stop. I didn’t think much of it until I heard a knock on the door.
My heart froze, fear tightening an ice-cold grip around my throat. I turned and, through the window, saw a pair of glowing eyes on the other side of the door. Ever so slowly, the door started to push inward as Mrs. Holmes crept inside. I felt like I should have screamed in that moment, but nothing came to me. It felt as though my lungs had completely deflated at the sight of her.
She stepped toward me. I stepped back until I felt my back press against the counter behind me. I wanted to run, but something told me I couldn’t outrun whatever was standing in front of me. My hands reached onto the counter and felt for anything I could use to defend myself. I felt the lukewarm touch of the porcelain plates and wrapped my fingers around the rim of one. I waited as Mrs. Holmes inched closer until, finally, I whipped my arm around and smashed the plate against her head.
She wailed and faltered a few steps, buying me enough time to run deeper into the kitchen, toward the knives. She was on me again before I could reach them. I felt a wet sting on my calf and looked down to see her there, latched on with her teeth sinking deep into my flesh.
I fell onto the concrete floor, my left shoulder taking the brunt of the impact. I tried to crawl away but couldn’t break free of her inhuman weight. With my free leg, I kicked at her head as hard as I could until she released me. Her bloodstained mouth hissed at me as I scrambled to my feet.
I ripped the largest knife I could find out of the block and spun around, ready to drive it into Mrs. Holmes’s chest, but she was gone. My eyes flicked frantically around the room, looking for any sign of her. Then I felt something drip onto my cheek. In the reflection of the knife blade, I could see the drop of blood rolling down my cheek. I looked up, and there she was.
She wasn't suspended from the ceiling; she was floating. As soon as I laid eyes on her, she dropped, falling right on top of me. I managed to raise the knife high enough and felt it pierce her gut as she landed on me. I think that was the only thing that saved me from her teeth sinking into my neck.
Mrs. Holmes reeled from the knife wound. She swung her arm out, and I felt the tremendous weight and strength behind it as it crashed into my side and threw me across the room. Pain shot through my back as I collided with the stainless steel of the dishwasher. I knew I couldn’t afford to waste time licking my wounds. I pulled myself up to my feet just as Mrs. Holmes ripped the knife free of her gut. Coagulated blood seeped out of the gaping wound like thick mud.
Mrs. Holmes hunched over like a predator waiting to pounce. My heart raced, waiting for the moment. Like a bolt of lighting, it came. She leapt across the room at me. My instincts kicked in, and I ducked to the right. I heard a loud metallic crash as Mrs. Holmes’s body slammed into the dishwasher. I looked up and saw her top half lodged in the machine. Without even thinking about it, I yanked the lever, sending the hood down just far enough over Mrs. Holmes’s thin body to activate the machine.
She howled and screeched as the steam inside the dishwasher boiled her skin. I didn’t wait around for the cycle to finish. I saddled the pain in my back and my leg and ran out of the kitchen before she had a chance to escape. I didn’t dare look back.

Sunset Grove closed down last year, three years after I left for good that night. I never found out what became of Mrs. Holmes, but I don’t think she ever left. The article detailing Sunset Grove’s closure cites financial difficulty after a spike in mortality rates, and there had been more than one story about staff members going missing over the years. Ted was the first of them. I would have been the second.
For a long time, Sunset Grove haunted me. I would dream about being back in room 2H, cowering under Mrs. Holmes’s impossibly tall form, her skin blistered and rubbery from the burns I gave her. In time, those dreams faded. It hadn’t seemed possible, but my life started to return to a sense of normalcy.
Reading the article on Sunset Grove brought those memories crashing back. I tried to tell myself that I was safe, but... I don’t think I am anymore. Not since I heard a knock on my door the other night. I wanted so badly to believe it was nothing, just neighborhood kids messing around, but my head has been pounding ever since I heard it, my stomach twisted in knots, my breath short. I can’t sleep through the night anymore. I find myself staring out the window, watching. Sometimes, among the twinkling fireflies at the edge of the woods, I could swear I see a pair of glowing eyes watching me in the dark.

2023.06.01 19:58 alcibsprecip Inspection / Seller Disclosure Negotiations

Hey folks, looking for feedback on my approach to negotiations w/ seller post inspection and seller disclosure as below (drafted, not yet sent).
Unfortunately have not yet had the opportunity to price out repair quotes with local companies for all of the items below formally. Looking for feedback on approach, less on accuracy of price estimates. Remove the links? What I can say is we're in Salt Lake City UT, 3BR, 1BA, 1200 sq ft if helpful and all of the items below are documented in and recommended by our inspection. Also that we're current rental tenants in the house being sold and it isn't listed on the market yet. Thanks!
-------
Below are the items that need to be addressed for us to move forward with the purchase:
  1. Clearing branches off of the power lines
  2. Fixing electrical shortage in light on front of house over front door
  3. Roof repair of damaged shingles (2-3 shingles on roof apex, represents risk of $400->$1000 depending if water damage present) https://homeguide.com/costs/roof-repair-cost
  4. Removal and replacement of asbestos siding ( ~60 sq feet of siding, represents risk of minimum $1500 in costs) https://homeguide.com/costs/asbestos-removal-cost
  5. Scraping, priming, and painting of exterior where siding/trim is exposed
  6. Repair of grout/sealant in shower
  7. Repaireplacement of HVAC blower (represents risk of ~$500 in cost) https://homeguide.com/costs/blower-motor-replacement-cost
Concerns for Risk:
  1. Age of entire HVAC unit (20 years): This represents uncertainty, therefore risk for us. Yes it could last another 10+ years or it could last another 10 weeks. Without knowing its maintenance history or having an HVAC tech evaluate it, it could be either extreme and represents a replacement bill of upwards of $11K w/ parts and labor. https://homeguide.com/costs/hvac-cost
  2. Gutter installation to protect foundation: This represents a defined known risk which could cost upwards of $1500 to address. https://homeguide.com/costs/gutter-installation-cost
  3. Water heater age (16 years) as above: This represents more certain risk given it has exceeded it's expected lifespan (8-12 years) by either 33-50% but could cost upwards of $2000 to address if not done so before closing. https://www.homedepot.com/services/c/cost-install-water-heate9058c024e
We would like to see this risk reflected and accounted for with either cash-back credit on closing, lowering the current price, or an alternative mechanism.

2023.06.01 19:13 wanderer-07 WTTB Chapter 3: Exploring Further

I turn around and slam the door behind me, just in time as I hear the creature run into the door as soon as it shuts.
After I've calmed down a bit I notice how extremely hot it is in the place I entered. at least there's none of those dog things here I take a sip of water before turning around and figuring out my new temporary place of stay.
The room I am in has the appearance of a house a couple decades old. It looks normal, compared to what I have seen in this new world before.
I decide to start moving right away. this heat will start to get uncomfortable soon. Opening the door to where a hallway would normally be in a house, I find just that, a hallway.
I soon notice that the hall is disoriented in the way that it is designed. Lights are on the wall instead of the ceiling. And a few blurry paintings are on the floor and ceiling.
After I reach the end of the hall, I quickly realize this whole area is like this. Disorienting and liminal. The space opens up to a kitchen and dining room, with a staircase going up where the fridge would be.
I go to check the cupboards and drawers in the kitchen, hoping to find something, but to no avail as all of them are empty. Going up the stairs I find what looks to be a basement. With unfinished walls and a concrete floor with rugs and box's in random places.
I take a sip of water and realize I am on to my last bottle, which is concerning as I haven't found any more sources. dehydration is probably a less painful way to die then being mauled by that demon human dog thing...probably.
Traveling through the 'basement', I find a door that looks like it would be a front door leading outside. I open it up to quickly discover that said door does not lead outside, but to a bedroom that looks normal except for a nightstand floating two feet off the ground a the closet being on the ceiling.
I sit down on the bed as the heat is starting to become a problem and I need to take a break. The bed has a standard blue blanket and soft looking pillows. Instinctively, I lay down and become surprised by the comfort the bed gives, and I quickly find myself falling asleep.
 ***
Waking up, I wonder how long I was asleep, my phone clock obviously doesn't work and the clocks around this house...thing don't work either. I look around for the door to the next room only to realize that there isn't one. I look up to the closet and find myself curious, so I get up and jump to open it.
Looking through I find that my suspicions were correct, as there seems to be another room. I jump up and pull myself up through the closet door to find myself in a living room looking place, with the closet in the floor where the coffee table would most likely be.
I get up and see that there is another kitchen behind the room I am currently in, and notice hunger aching my belly, so I decide to make another MRE. I turn on the stove in the kitchen and it unexpectedly works, so while waiting for it to warm up, I once again check the cupboards and fridge, because it's apparently here now, and like last time, nothing is in them.
The heat of the stove is heating up the room so I finish warming the MRE before sitting on the couch to eat it. I check to see if the TV works but it sadly doesn't respond to me pressing the power button.
Finishing it quickly, I get up in search of an exit. From what I've seen before, there probably is one. Opening a door that appears to be upside down, I enter what looks to be an attic, with a bunch of storage box's and random items.
Curious, I check a couple of the boxs, but I cant seem to open them. I take out my knife and try to cut through the box, but my knife just bumps into It like it's made out of stone. Admiting defeat, I head for the next room only to trip over a box that appears to be phased into the ground. I stare at it in confusion before slowly moving on.
Getting to and opening the door, I enter a bathroom. I can hear a distant sound of a toilet flushing. The room is small, which is normal for bathrooms I guess, and has a staircase going down in a spiral where a shower would be. I go to walk down it and catch a glimpse of the mirror above the sink.
I turn around to look at the mirror as something seemed off. Unlike the rest of the bathroom, which was tiled. The everything but my reflection was blank white. I find myself about to touch it, and as soon as I do. I feel like I fall through the mirror.
Like I felt when I entered this place, I feel myself falling. As much as I dont want to curiosity gets the better of me and I open my eyes. I find myself falling through and empty pitch black void, endless in size. Unlike last time, however. I feel at peace. I think that if I had to spend the rest of eternity here, I'd be perfectly fine with it. I hope I spend the rest of eternity here. I look below me and see a blinding amount of white coming closer every second. Until I eventually hit it.
As I hit the ground I start hyperventilate. I have no clue what that false sense of security was, but that empty void is definitely not peaceful! Getting my bearings back, although still shook, I look around to find myself in an all white plains like area, with a city in front of me, also white.
I start moving toward the city immediately. From the 3 areas I've been in before here. I can assume that this place is in layers, and that there is probably an area outside of this one.
I immediately notice that the gravity here is weaker, like I'm on the moon. There also appears to be light and I look up in search of a sun, but the sky is just plain blue, no clouds and sadly no sun.
Continuing on, I realize the the city ahead of me seems to be all one building, connected by ether singular sections being right next to each other, or by bridges across where a road would be if the ground wasn't completely white.
Quickening my pace, I reach the city and enter a building. Like the area outside the city, the building is completely desolate, no furniture or walls separating rooms. I go up a couple flights of stairs and look out a window with no glass blocking the inside from the outside.
Very far in the distance I can see something through the window of another building, i can't make out the details from where I am but I do see that it is yellow. I'm guessing that's where the 'exit' to this area is.
I go back down the stairs, exit the building and make my way to the place I saw, I don't want to remain here any longer than I have to.
It becomes increasingly noticeable how different this...plain of existence is compared to the other places I've been. I feel like I can see creatures looking at me as I pass by alleyways, but they disappear as I look at them.
Walking further down the road, I see a object that looks like it would be a food stand in the real world. Of course here though, it is completely white. I decide to take a closer look. Coming up to it I see another completely white object that is in the shape of a can.
I pick up the mysterious can, the sound of liquid can be heard from the inside, so I know it's full. I decide to put the blank can in my bag and continue on my journey...maybe it will return to its regular colours once it's out of this place, if white isn't it's natural colour.
A long time walking later and I finally reach the building that I saw the different colored wall paper in. While getting here I saw more things at the corner of my eye, only for it to disappear once I look at it. Deciding to take a sip of water, I dreadfully realize I'm on to the forth and final bottle.
I toss the empty bottle onto the ground, believing once again that littering isn't a problem here, hopefully some sort of neighborhood watch doesn't come and get me, and I enter the building.
Inside the building is once again empty, no furniture or support pillers in sight aside from a staircase going up to the next floor at the back corner of the room.
Remembering that the coloured wallpaper appeared to be on the 7th floor, I begin to make my way up. On the 5th floor I see another one of those can objects and go to collect it. Once I do collect it, however, I again see something in my peripheral vision, so I turn to look at it...but it doesn't dissappear.
I find myself face to face with a creature that has completely shadowed the side of the room where it is so that I cannot see its body. All that is visible on it is a pair of glowing white eyes and a terrifying glowing white smile. Me and the creature both just stare at each other for what feels like an eternity, I start to wonder if it can even see me.
Pitifully hoping it cannot. I slowly reach for my pocket knife. Although as soon as it sees me move it makes a deep growling noise...before leaping right at me.
In a a mixture of panic and surprise, I leap back to the wall and squeeze my eyes shut, all forms of defense lost. I expect to feel it's glowing teeth peirce through my flesh, but nothing happens. After a little bit of waiting I just barely open my eyes to look, and there's nothing but the desk the can was on and the blank white walls.
Immediately I shoot up and look around, trying to find the creature. "What was that thing?! Was it even here?!" ...Am I going insane..? After a bunch of panicked thoughts and a bit of hyperventilation, I regain my composure. okay...just got to get up to the 7th floor, and then I'll be okay! ..I hope with that, I continued on my way up.
Reaching the 7th floor I can now clearly see what I saw hours ago at this point. The wallpaper appears to be of a desert, or just sand, it's hard to tell. Inspecting the room further, I see a interesting road through a window on the opposite side of where I came from. The window shows a white road with no support floating over a blue void, even though the road is conjoins with the ground. Yea, I don't need to go there.
Looking back to the wallpaper, I go to touch it, but my hand phases through. I believe this is another one of those exit/enterences where I have to phase through the solid-looking thing and enter the void...
I briefly try to think of any other option I could have, to no avail. Preparing myself mentally and physically, I walk through the wall and enter the pitch black void once more.

Update on Insertion - hiatus and what comes next
hello! this is an update from myself and u/AlanharTheRiver. we're currently having to deal with finals, so it was decided that we should take a break from outputting chapters, and that will also allow us time to decide on what to do next, what with rewrites, the title, and a bunch of different things that need to be taken care of.
in the meantime, please enjoy the supplemental material that we have made and can slip out for now:
firstly, we have a scene draft that shows the first appearance of the detective character (this was shared on the discord a few weeks ago, so it's not exactly spoilers)
Primary memory transcription subject: Jalnak, Captain in the Venlil Prime Exterminator corps.
Date [standardized human time]: July [TBD], 2136
Location: Venlil Prime capitol city landing zone.
Jalnak and Kalne watched as a human vessel descended towards the landing field, its engines surprisingly quiet as even with less than a month of time they had already managed to adapt Federation principles into their machines so that the shuttlecraft could largely use gravatics to propel itself. The rapid pace of advancement was… honestly rather alarming, at least to Jalnak’s analytical mind, and he felt himself almost reflexively reaching towards his pistol as the hatch on the craft hissed open with a mechanical grating sound interspersed with clicks of pops of air, like the sound of a Yob’kar’s hunting snarl. Were it not for the visor that was being worn by the human standing in the entranceway with its long coat flapping around its feet and casting a shadow that reached out across the ground towards them, the venlil probably would have succumbed to his instincts.
After a slight moment of quiet, the human took a step forward, hesitation apparent in its posture as it turned slightly away from the two venlil and leaned ever so slightly towards the shuttle. Quickly, Jalnak moved his hand away from the handgrip of his tranquilizer pistol and gently elbowed Kalne. “Say something,” he muttered to the striped venlil.
Kalne shook her head. “You’re the one who was notified,” she retorted. “You say something.”
“Yeah well, you’re the one who Zeleveya’s talked to about human customs, I’d be more likely to wind up offending the predator and we don’t want–”
“Hello,” the human called out as it raised up a small fob that it held in its hand. “Uh, I don’t think that this thing is working. You’re just going ‘meep burr meep’ and this universal translator thing isn’t turning it into anything legible.”
Jalnak sighed with relief as the tension vanished. The two venlil quickly walked over and the human held out the fob for Kalne to inspect. It only took a moment, and she quickly handed it back for the human to slot into one of the plastic dome shapes that sat over its ears. “Can you understand us now,” jalnak said hesitantly once the human lowered its hands and swung its head to face in his direction.
“I can,” the human replied with a close-lipped smile, before it reached out a hand in greeting. “Salutations, my name is Jarna Arkwright, and you can either call me Miss Jarna, detective Arkwright, or simply Arkwright, take your pick. And I’ve been told that the two of you are Kalne and Jalnak, correct?”
Jalnak nodded. “I’m Jalnak,” he replied tersely. “Before we continue, I would like to ask two things of you.”
“Sure, go ahead.”
“Well, for starters I would like to know why you don’t have a translator implant,” the venlil said as he gestured towards the earpieces that the human – detective Arkwright – wore. “The biochip only takes a week to take hold, and we were led to believe that all UN personnel were making use of them already with commercial rollouts scheduled for the next two months. Also, I would like it if you could remove your visor so that we can see your eyes, that way we can better trust and understand each other.”
The detective chuckled quietly at Jalnak’s words. “Not even gonna buy me dinner before asking such intimate questions,” she muttered jokingly, before turning briefly to face Kalne. “I would assume that you want the same revelations?”
Kalne nodded. “If you’re comfortable,” she said calmly. “Jalnak is… not one for tact, shall we say.”
“Heh, I can see that,” Arkwright said. “Both questions have a single answer,” she eventually stated, “but I must warn you that what’s underneath this visor isn’t exactly easy on the eyes. Are you sure?”
Jalnak gave an affirmative twitch of his tail. “I need to know,” he replied.
The human sighed, and then eventually reached up and delicately removed her visor, eliciting a gasp from Kalne as she was the first to see what was underneath. Then the human turned to face Jalnak, and he felt himself stagger back. Detective Arkwright didn’t have actual eyes. Instead, a pair of mismatched metal orbs sat in sockets that were surrounded by skin lined and pocked with scar tissue, one with a glossy rectangular lens, and the other an empty gaze from a dataport. The human quickly replaced her mask, before she turned around and lifted her hair to reveal metal plates along the back of her neck, with wires running up to a pair of connection points for the visor.
“There wasn’t any room to install a translator,” Arkwright said simply. “But on the bright side, thanks to the visor I’ve got one hundred and eighty degrees of visibility, can see into the infrared and ultraviolet spectrums, and thanks to the dataport I can record some of what I see and transfer it to external devices so I’m a fully reliable witness.”
Kalne nodded. “I can see how that would be beneficial to an investigator,” Jalnak’s compatriot said after a moment.
“Indeed,” detective Arkwright said smugly. “And while we’re on the subject, I believe that I came here with a job to do.”

and next we have four pieces of visual media:
a heroforge miniature of Leia Kieran Irons-N

a miniature of Lieutenant Novikhan in all their cybernetic sectoral-heterochromatic glory
(NOTE: sectoral heterochromia is where part of one eye is a different color. novikhan has mostly grey eyes, except for part of their left eye which is blue)

the cumulative timeline document condensed into a single image (because why not)

and the massive chart that u/AlanharTheRiver made to track chapters and PoVs

we'll likely put out a few "random thoughts and resources" over the next month, but for now Insertion (or maybe "The Nature of Outcasts: Into the Unknown" as we are thinking of calling it now) is going on hiatus.
lastly, this is also an opportunity to discuss collaborations. we'll be rewriting a decent portion of the original plotline of Insertion to accommodate improved characterization, new writing style, and add in some plotlines that happened offscreen (such as Jason x Vril). if anyone wants to fit in a crossover with us during this time, then now is a wonderful opportunity to discuss such things.

2023.06.01 19:09 Sunflowersrule1961 Who is responsible?

We purchased a in 3/3/23. The seller had basically fipped it. MLS listing stated: had new roof, water heater, windows and doors, new electrical both upstairs and downstairs. Along with new carpet and flooring. We had a inspection completed, they found that the electrical panel did not have closing door and was not labeled. The seller was to fix this, apparently they couldn't find a "door" so the entire panelbox was changed out. The newer box was smaller then the original one (which is still in the basement) and again not labeled. Well it started to pop breakers so we figured out on our own where each breaker went to. There were 7 of the 15 breakers that went to nothing, but still had old wiring attached to them. The other 8 breakers were a "hot" mess. With the fridge, the bathroom, 8 outlets in the bedroom and the entire basement on the one breaker. The basement has one light switch which also controls all the power to the outlet (1) which has the sump pump plugged into it. So we have to leave the light on 24/7 and we can not use our deep freeze because it pops the breaker.
When we notified the seller, he said he was told everything was fine by the electrician he hired. And no one pulled any permits for anything done on the house. The permit for the panel box was pulled 30 days after we moved in and only because I demanded it. The inspector only came out because my real estate agent made it clear he needed to. Well that inspector didn't even remove the panelbox cover. He said he didn't do it because he didn't bring a screwdriver??!!!
Called 2 licensed electricians to look at it and both of them said this was not safe and that it definitely should have been caught by the inspector and that who ever wired it did it incorrectly not to code.
The "new" windows? 4 of them by law should be tempered and are not and the large picture window and front door both leak not just a little but more like a waterfall. The front door was installed and we found that the home has 4 9/16 jamb and the door used is a 6 9/16... not good.
My question is? Is the seller responsible to correct these issues and what is a reasonable amount of time to get these issues resolved it's been months.
This information has been given to the seller.

2023.06.01 18:24 BayouDeSaird Self Checkout Didn’t Allow Me to Proceed Because of Missed Item in Cart. How did it know?

I recently went through self checkout with the handheld scanner) at my local North Texas Costco, and accidentally forgot to scan one of my items (honestly). For some reason, the light at the register started blinking and it would not allow me to proceed with payment until an employee came by and pointed out the discrepancy. I scanned the last item after that and it let me proceed with payment.
How did the self checkout register know I neglected to scan the single item (it was grilled chicken patties by the way).

2023.06.01 18:02 katefeetie Trip Report: 2 Weeks in Tokyo, Hakone, Kyoto, Nara, Osaka, Koyasan and Kanazawa

Since this sub was so helpful in planning, I wanted to share my itinerary and trip report! We had an incredible first time in Japan and I can't wait to go back.
Couldn't fit our (very detailed) itinerary in this post, but if you'd like to download it's here.
Medium article version with photos + itinerary is here.
And our shareable Google map is here.
About us:
Some overall learnings:
Hotel Reviews:
Tokyu Stay Shinjuku Eastside (Tokyo): This was a great basic hotel, close to plenty of transportation and right on the edge of Kabukicho. The buffet breakfast was the highlight - a great mix of Western and Japanese breakfast options, including a great miso soup.Hakone Airu (Hakone): Mixed review here. On the one hand, the in-room onsen and public onsen were both wonderful, and the service was extraordinary. On the other hand, the mix of Balinese and Japanese didn’t quite work, and dinner and breakfast were more confusing than enjoyable.Hotel Alza (Kyoto): By far our favorite stay. I can’t recommend this place enough, and it was definitely worth paying a little extra. They brought us an amazing bento breakfast in our rooms every morning, they had every amenity we could need (they even re-upped the free sheet masks every day), and the micro-bubble bath at the end of a long day of walking was amazing.Koyasan Syukubo Ekoin Temple (Mt Koya): This was a great temple experience. Koyasan in general is obviously pretty tourist-y, but Eko-in still made it feel authentic, and dinner and breakfast were both amazing. Your stay includes a meditation class, morning prayers and a morning fire ritual, and you can pay to attend a cemetery tour, all of which were great.Utaimachi (Kanazawa): We were only here for two nights, but this place was pretty good. Very close to the Higashi Chaya area, where we didn’t actually end up spending much time. Always love tatami mat flooring, and the washedryer was a nice bonus, but we were also right next to the lobby and right under another room so there was some noise. The Gate Asakusa (Tokyo): A great and very Westernized hotel with amazing views of Shinso-ji and the surrounding area. It’s on the top floors of a building right in the middle of all things Asakusa, but is still pretty quiet. And has a wonderful, deep soaking tub with free bath salts.

Tuesday: Arrival, Shinjuku

1 PM: Arrival at Haneda
We got customs and immigration forms to fill out on the plane and everything went fairly quickly. Picked up some cash and Suica cards, went to see about taking the Airport Limousine bus ($10/each) but we should have booked in advance because there wasn’t one for another hour. We ended up taking a taxi (about $50) to our hotel in Shinjuku.
4 PM: Arrival at hotel - Tokyu Stay Shinjuku East Side
We dropped our luggage and went to a nearby eel restaurant, Shinjuku Unatetsu. The eel was incredible and not too filling. Wandered Kabuki-cho for a bit, I dragged my bf through all 4 floors of Don Quijote (I had a list of beauty items to pick up), then rested at the hotel.
7 PM: Dinner in Shinjuku (Tsunahachi)
We went to Tsunahachi for dinner and got some amazing tempura (I wish we had sat at the bar to watch it being made!) and then crashed by 9 pm, because we are young and cool.

Wednesday: Harajuku, Meiji, and Shibuya

7 AM: Hotel breakfast
Up early for hotel breakfast, which has convinced bf to start making miso soup every morning.
9 AM: Shinjuku Station - Pick up JR Passes
We went to Shinjuku station to pick up our JR passes, then spent 30 minutes finding the place where we could get them before 10 AM. There was a long line (staff shortage) so we waited about an hour but we got them and headed to Harajuku.
11 AM: Meiji Shrine & Yoyogi Park
We walked to Meiji Shrine, stopping at the gardens along the way (well worth the 500y entrance fee, especially on a beautiful day). We were lucky to come across a wedding at the shrine. Then we walked around Yoyogi Park a bit.
1 PM: Lunch (Gyoza Lou)
Walked into Gyoza Lou and were seated right away. Incredible gyoza as well as beer and bean sprouts with meat sauce - maybe 10 bucks total for 2 people.
1:30 PM: Shopping/museums in Harajuku
We split up so I could do some shopping in vintage stores - Flamingo, TAGTAG and Kinji (my favorite), and bf could go to the Ota Memorial Museum for their Cats in Ukiyo-e exhibit (which he loved). I walked down Takeshita street to meet him and managed to get a green tea, strawberry and red bean paste crepe from Marion Crepes.
3 PM: Shibuya Scramble & Hachinko Statue
We grabbed the train to Shibuya, saw the scramble and the Hachinko statue, then entered the maze that is Tokyu Hands. I got some onsen powders for gifts and some more cosmetics. My boyfriend checked out the Bic camera store and I went to Gu, which is like the love child of Uniqlo and Primark. I immediately undid all the “light packing” I did with new clothes.
7 PM: Dinner Reservation - Shinjuku Kappu Nakajima
I got us a reservation a few months ago at Shinjuku Kappu Nakajima. It was probably one of the best meals of my life. The omakase came out to less than $100usd each, which felt like a steal.
9 PM: Golden Gai bar (Bar Araku)
We wandered Golden Gai and went into a bar where the entrance fee was waived for foreigners called Bar Araku. It was very small but had great vibes, highly recommend. I drank too much sake, which will be a theme.

Thursday: Shinjuku

4 AM: Earthquake
The phone alerts are insanely loud! We rushed down to the hotel lobby and the only other people there were fellow foreigners - apparently Japanese people at the hotel knew a 5.1 is okay to sleep through.
9 AM: Shinjuku Gyoen
We strolled around in the sun taking photos for about 3 hours. Today is a lot less planned than yesterday - I kind of wish I’d switched the itineraries after how long getting the JR Pass took. We did go to the fancy Starbucks, of course.
12 PM: Lunch (Kaiten Sushi Numazuto)
We tried to go to a nearby sushi place but it was full, so we walked up to Kaiten Sushi Numazuto. We were a little disappointed it wasn’t actually conveyor belt sushi (the conveyor belt was for show and you ordered from the staff). Stopped in Bic camera afterwards for a bit.
2 PM: Ninja Trick House
We tried to go to the Samurai museum but learned it closed a few weeks ago. A good excuse to go to the Ninja Trick House instead. You’re thinking: “Isn’t that place for children?” Yes. Yes it is. And we loved every minute. I now have a camera roll full of myself being terrible at throwing stars. The dream.
3 PM: Don Quijote
More Don Quijote, mostly to get out of the rain. Got my last few beauty products I really wanted and a few souvenirs. An overstimulating heaven.
6 PM: 3-hour Shinjuku Foodie Tour
We signed up for a 3-hour “foodie tour” of Shinjuku that stopped at a sushi place, a Japanese bbq spot with insane wagyu beef, and a sake tasting spot. It was great, and we loved our guide, but wished it had stopped at a few more spots to try more things.
9 PM: Walk around Shinjuku
We attempted to play pachinko, got very confused and lost $7. Tourism!

Friday: Hakone

7 AM: Set up luggage forwarding to Kyoto with hotel
Luggage forwarding is brilliant. We did it twice and it went so smoothly, for about $10 USD per bag. Highly recommend.
9 AM: Transit to Hakone
We got to experience Japanese transit at rush hour. I can’t believe I have to go back to the MTA after this. We took the subway to Tokyo station and then the Shinkansen to Odawara, then a train to Hakone-Yumoto. The hotel was only a 20-minute walk away, so we decided to take a more scenic route - which turned out to be a forest hike straight up switchbacks most of the way.
11 AM: Lunch in Hakone (Hatsuhana)
We stopped in a soba place called Hatsuhana with a system of writing your name down and waiting outside to be called in. They skipped our names because they weren’t in Japanese, but let us in when they realized their mistake. The soba was made and served by old aunties so of course it was insanely good and well worth it.
1 PM: Hakone Open Air Museum
We took the train down to the Hakone Open Air Museum, which lived up to the hype. I’m not normally into sculpture, but seeing it in nature, and the way the museum is laid out, made it incredible. And obviously the Picasso exhibit was amazing.
3 PM: Owakudani, Pirate Ship, Hakone Checkpoint
We took the train to the cable car to Owakudani, then the ropeway to Togendai, then the pirate ship ferry to Motohakone. We were running behind so unfortunately had to rush through the Hakone Checkpoint, which was empty but very cool.
6 PM: Dinner at hotel
Back to our hotel for our kaiseki meal. The staff spoke very little English and Google struggled with the menu, so we had no idea what we were eating half the time, but overall it was pretty good.
9 PM: Onsen time
Experienced my first public onsen, followed by the private onsen in our room. The tatami sleep did wonders for my back.

Saturday: Travel to Kyoto, Philosopher’s Path, Gion

8 AM: Breakfast, travel to Kyoto
Took the train to Odawara and then the Shinkansen to Kyoto station. We booked all of our Shinkansen seats about a week in advance but you can also book them on the day, I believe.
1 PM: Lunch in Gion
Our Kyoto hotel let us check in early, and then we went looking for lunch. Quickly learned that most every place in the Gion area has a line outside and closes at 2! We eventually found a tiny spot with insanely good ramen. It also had chicken sashimi on the menu but we weren’t brave enough.
2 PM: Philosopher’s Path, Ginkaku-ji
We took a bus over to the Philosopher’s Path, which was not busy at all because of the rain. It was pretty, and I could see how great it would look in cherry blossom season. We had to kind of rush to Ginkaku-ji, which was gorgeous nonetheless.
4 PM: Honen-in, Nanzen-ji
Stopped by Honen-in (which we had completely to ourselves, thanks rain!) and then Nanzen-ji. My bf is a big history guy and he went feral for the Hojo rock garden. It was very pretty and I’d love to see it in better weather.
6 PM: Food Tour of Gion & Pontocho
This food tour stopped at two places (an izakaya and a standing bar) with a walking tour of Gion and Pontocho in between. We also stopped at Yasaka shrine and caught a rehearsal of a traditional Japanese performance.
10 PM: Pain
My feet hurt so bad. Bring waterproof shoes, but make sure they don’t have 5 year old insoles. I tried some stick-on cooling acupuncture foot pads I picked up at Donki and they were bliss.

Sunday: Arashiyama, The Golden Pavilion and Tea Ceremony

8 AM: Arashiyama Bamboo Forest
The forecast was for heavy rain all day, but we lucked out and only got a few drizzles here and there. We headed to Arashiyama Bamboo Forest in the morning and it wasn’t too crowded. We did have an amazing bamboo dish at dinner last night so now bamboo makes me hungry.
10 AM: Tenryu-ji, Iwatayama Monkey Park
Headed over to Tenryu-ji, which was very nice but very crowded, and then to one of the things I looked forward to most on the trip, the Iwatayama Monkey Park. It’s a 20 minute hike up there but it is worth it. Oh my god. Getting to feed a baby monkey made my whole week.
12 PM: Lunch near Arashiyama (Udon Arashiyama-tei)
Headed back down to the main road and got duck udon at a little place called Udon Arashiyama-tei. I know I keep calling everything incredible but… yes.
1 PM: Ginkaku-ji
Ran into some bus issues (the first time we experienced anything public transit-wise not running as expected!) but eventually got over to Ginkaku-ji. It was also very crowded (seems like Japanese schools are big on field trips, which I’m jealous of) and not my favorite temple, but beautiful nonetheless.
3 PM: Daitoku-ji
We were ahead of schedule so we got to spend some time at our meeting place for the tea ceremony, Daitoku-ji. It ended up being our favorite temple, especially Daisen-in, a small and very quiet spot with a great self-guided tour. The monks showed us a section normally closed to non-Japanese tourists with beautiful calligraphy.
4 PM: Tea Ceremony (90 mins)
The tea ceremony we booked said it was in groups of up to ten, but it ended up being just us. It was very nice and relaxing, plus we got a little meal.
6 PM: Dinner (Gion Kappa), Pontocho Alley
We both nearly fell asleep on the bus back so we took it easy for the night. Went to an izakaya called Gion Kappa which had the best tuna belly we’d ever eaten, then did a quick walk around Pontocho Alley, got treats at 7-11 and went to bed early.

Monday: Fushimi Inari, Nishiki Market, Kyoto Imperial Palace (kinda)

9 AM: Fushimi Inari
Our plans to get up super early to beat the crowds to Fushimi Imari were hampered by the fact that we are no longer in our 20s. It was packed by the time we got there, and the amount of littering and defacing done by tourists was a bummer.
11 AM: Tofuku-ji
We had planned to go to the Imperial Palace at 10:30 for the Aoi Parade, but decided instead to get away from crowds by hiking from Fushimi Inari to Tofuku-ji, which was beautiful (I’d love to see it in the fall).
12 PM: Nishiki Market, lunch (Gyukatsu)
Grabbed lunch first at Gyukatsu (wagyu katsu - delicious) then wandered Nishiki a bit. It’s touristy, but fun.
2 PM: Kyoto Gyoen, Kyoto Handicraft Center
It was supposed to rain all day but ended up sunny, so we went back to the hotel to drop off our rain jackets and umbrellas. Stepped back outside and within ten minutes it was raining. We went to Kyoto Gyoen and saw the outside of the imperial palace; it was closed because of the parade earlier and half the garden was blocked off because the former emperor was visiting. Without the palace, Kyoto Gyoen is kind of meh. We walked over to Kyoto Handicraft Center which was also meh, but we picked up some nice lacquerware.
7:30 PM: Dinner at Roan Kiku Noi
We had a reservation at Roan Kiku Noi where we had maybe the best meal of our lives. Amazing that it only has two Michelin stars, honestly. Had fun trying to decipher the pain meds aisle at a Japanese pharmacy afterwards and then called it a night.

Tuesday: Day Trip to Nara

8 AM: Travel to Nara
We took the subway to the JR and were there in about an hour.
9 AM: Nara Deer Park
Two things about the Nara deer. One: if you bow to them, they bow back, and it’s very cute. And two, if you buy the 200y rice crackers to feed to them, do it somewhere where there aren’t very many of them. I got mobbed by like 15 deer and bitten 3 times. My fault for having skin approximately the shade of a rice cracker.
10 AM: Kofuku-ji, Nara National Museum
We saw Kofuku-ji and then the Nara National Museum, then stopped at a random little cafe for rice bowls with some kind of regional sauce (I can’t find it now!).
12 PM: Isetan Garden
We spent a long time finding the entrance to the Isetan garden only for it to be closed on Tuesdays.
2 PM: Giant Buddha
Saw Nandaimon Gate and the Daibutsu (giant Buddha), which are both every bit as enormous and glorious as advertised, as well as very crowded.
3 PM: Kasuga-taisha Shrine
Wandered over to Kasuga-taisha shrine, which is famous for its hundreds of lanterns and thousand-year-old trees. There’s a special inner area (paid) where you can see the lanterns lit up in the dark.
4 PM: Wait for the emperor
We got held up by a procession for, guess who, the former emperor again. Stalker.
5 PM: Nara shopping and snacks
Walked around Higashimuki Shopping Street and Mochiidono Shopping Arcade, bought a nice sake set and an amazing little hand-painted cat, ate some red bean paste pancakes and headed back to Kyoto.
7 PM: Dinner in Kyoto
Walked around Pontocho searching for dinner and landed on Yoshina, where we got even more kaiseki. Finished the night at Hello Dolly, a gorgeous jazz bar overlooking the river.

Wednesday: Day Trip to Osaka

7 AM: Depart hotel
Started by taking the subway to the JR. Took us about an hour altogether, though it would have been faster if we’d caught the express.
9 AM: Osaka Castle
We got to Osaka Castle in time for it to hit 85 degrees out. The outside of the castle is gorgeous, but the line to get in was long and I don’t know if the museum parts were worth the wait, especially with the crowds. The view from the top is nice, though.
12 PM: Okonomiyaki lunch (Abeton)
We went to an okonomiyaki spot in Avetica station called Abeton that was full of locals and absolutely bomb as hell.
1 PM: Shitteno-ji, Keitakuen Gardens
We headed to Shitteno-ji (our oldest temple yet) which was nice, though the climb to the top of then 5 story pagoda wasn’t worth the sweat. Then we walked over to Keitakuen Gardens, a small but gorgeous garden in Tennoji Park. Had a nice sit in the shade to digest and plan our next moves.
3 PM: Ebisuhigasbi, Mega Don Quijote
I am a crazy person, so I had to go to the Mega Don Quijote. We walked around Ebisuhigasbi for a while first, and while I was buying gifts in Donki, my boyfriend entered a sushi challenge for westerners (which turned out to just be “can a white boy handle wasabi”) and won a bunch of random crap! Now we own Japanese furniture wipes.
5 PM: Dotonbori & America-mura
We took the Osaka Loop to the Dotonbori area, which was super crowded as expected. We walked around America-mura and enjoyed seeing what they think of us. There are great designer vintage clothing shops here if that’s your thing.
6 PM: Dinner (Jiyuken)
We tried to get into Koni Doraku, a crab restaurant, but they were booked up, so we went to a tiny spot called Jiyuken for curry instead. I would do things for this curry. It was the platonic ideal of curry. It was served by old Japanese aunties from a very old recipe, so we knew it was going to be good, but it exceeded our wildest expectations… for <1000y each.
7 PM: Return to Kyoto
My feet were feeling real bad (the Nikes may look cool but they cannot support 25k steps a day) so we headed back to Kyoto and packed for our early morning tomorrow.

Thursday: Travel to Koyasan, Temple Stay

8 AM: Bus from Kyoto to Koyasan
The transit from Kyoto to Mt Koya is complicated, so we ended up just booking a bus directly from Kyoto Station to Koyasan (which barely cost more than public transit!). We got there bright and early for the 3 hour trip - if you take a bus out of Kyoto Station I definitely recommend giving yourself extra time to navigate to the right bus.
11 AM: Arrive at Eko-in, lunch
We arrived in Mt Koya and checked in to our temple, Eko-in. The quiet and the beauty hit me hard and I fell asleep for a few hours. We got a nice lunch at Hanabishi in town.
4 PM: Meditation class, dinner
The temple offered a meditation class, which was lovely, followed by a vegan dinner in our rooms. I can’t explain how peaceful this place was.
7 PM: Okuno-in Cemetery
We signed up for a monk-led tour of Okuno-in, which was definitely worth it. Came back for some public baths and fell asleep to the sound of rainfall.

Friday: Travel to Kanazawa, Higashi Chaya District

7 AM: Service & ritual at Eko-in
The day started with a religious service and a fire ritual at the temple. Both were stunning. I did wish that my fellow tourists had been a bit more respectful by showing up on time and following directions, but luckily, no one has more patience than a Buddhist monk.
9 AM: Travel to Kanazawa
We took a taxi through some sketchy mountain roads to Gokurakubashi Station, took two trains to Osaka Station, and then the JR Thunderbird to Kanazawa.
1 PM: Arrive at Kanazawa, Lunch (Maimon)
We got into Kanazawa station and went straight for a sushi spot called Maimon, which was delicious. Struggled a bit with the bus system and eventually got to our hotel, Utaimachi.
4 PM: Higashi Chaya District
Wandered the Higashi Chaya district a bit. It seemed kind of dead, but maybe we are just used to the hustle and bustle of Tokyo/Kyoto.
7 PM: Korinbo, dinner (Uguisu)
Walked down to the Korinbo area southwest of the park and found a tiny ramen spot called Uguisu. Incredible. Some of the best broth I’ve ever tasted plus amazing sous vide meats.
9 PM: Bar in Korinbo (Kohaku)
Went to a little upstairs whiskey bar called Kohaku. Boyfriend got Japanese whiskey and they made me a custom cocktail with sake, pineapple and passion fruit that was just insane. They were very nice and talked baseball with us for a while.

Saturday: Omicho Market, Kanazawa Castle, 21st Century Museum

9 AM: Kenroku-en Garden
We walked over to Kenroku-en Gardens, which were as beautiful as advertised. I was hurting pretty bad (crampy ladies, just know Japanese OTC painkillers are much weaker than ours, BYO Advil) so we’re moving slowly today.
12 PM: Omicho Market, lunch (Iki-Iki Sushi)
Walked to Omicho Market and ate little bits from different stalls, then waited about an hour to get into Iki-Iki Sushi. It was worth it. Some of the best, freshest sushi of my life.
2 PM: Kanazawa Castle, 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art
We walked around Kanazawa Castle a bit, then walked over to the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art. It was packed and the line to get tickets to the special exhibits was crazy, so we looked at the free ones and then headed back. Along the way we stopped in a few little stores and bought some handcrafted lacquerware from a local artist.
6 PM: Onnagawa Festival, dinner (Huni)
As we walked towards the restaurant, we came upon the Onnagawa Festival on the Plum Bridge, which included a beautiful dancing ceremony and lantern lighting. We went to Huni for dinner, our first “westernized Japanese” restaurant, and it was fantastic. 9 dishes served slowly over 3 hours at a table overlooking the river. Highly recommend if you’re in Kanazawa.
10 PM: Why does the bathtub have a phone
We went back to our hotel, struggled with the automated bathtub, and enjoyed our last night on tatami floors.

Sunday: Travel to Tokyo, Tokyo Giants Game, Ueno Park

7 AM: Travel to Tokyo
Grabbed a taxi we arranged the night before to Kanazawa Station - it would have been an easy bus journey but our number of bags has increased - and boarded the Shinkansen for Tokyo.
12 PM: Travel to Tokyo Dome and Tokyo Dome Park
Dropped our bags at our hotel in Asakusa, then headed for Tokyo Dome. We got there a little early to look around - there’s basically a full mall and food court and amusement park there. We grabbed some beers and some chicken katsu curry that was delicious.
2 PM: Tokyo Giants vs Chunichi Dragons
Japanese baseball games are so. much. fun. This was a random mid season game, and the stadium was full and people were amped. I’ve been to many American baseball games and never seen fans this excited. We also scored some fried cheese-wrapped hot dogs on a stick and a few more beers and had the time of our lives cheering for the Giants.
5 PM: Ueno Park
After trying and failing to find the jersey we were looking for, we walked to Ueno Park and looked around a bit. It was lovely, but we were exhausted and full of too many beers, so we headed back to Asakusa.
7 PM: Dinner in Asakusa
There was a festival all day around Shinso-ji and there were a ton of street vendors and day-drunk people when we arrived in the afternoon (as a native Louisianan, I approve) and it seemed like the partiers were going on into the night. We ducked into a restaurant for some buckwheat soba (never got the name, but it was only okay) and tucked in early.

Monday: Tsukiji Food Tour, Kapabashi Dougu, Akihabara

8 AM: 3-hour Tsukiji Food Tour + lunch
We started the day with a Tsukiji food tour, which ended up being my favorite food tour of the 3 by far. The guide was great, and we stopped by a dozen food stalls and sampled everything from mochi to fresh tuna to octopus cakes. We finished with lunch at Sushi Katsura, where our chef prepared everything in front of us.
12 PM: Imperial Palace, Don Quijote
We were planning to spend the afternoon exploring the Imperial Palace and Edo Castle Ruins, but it was hot and the palace was closed, so we walked to Taira no Masakado's Grave, then headed back to Asakusa for, you guessed it, Don Quijote. I did not intend for this trip to be “guess how many Don Quijotes I can visit” but here we are. We bought another suitcase and I filled it with food and gifts to bring home.
3 PM: Kappabashi Dougu
We walked Kappabashi Dougu and browsed kitchenwares while wishing we had a bigger kitchen, an unlimited budget and a way to get a hundred pounds of porcelain home in one piece.
6 PM: Akihabara dinner + games + drinks
We took the train to Akihabara, got dinner at Tsukada Nojo, then played games in a few arcades and ended the night at Game Bar A-button, which lets you play vintage handheld games while you drink.

Tuesday: Senso-ji, Flight

9 AM: Breakfast, Senso-ji
We got breakfast pancakes at Kohikan, then walked around Senso-ji and the surrounding shopping streets for a while.
12 PM: McDonald’s
Look, I couldn’t leave Japan without doing it, okay? I got the Teriyaki Chicken Burger (too sloppy and sweet) and bf got the Ebi Filet-O (he said it tasted exactly like a Filet-O-Fish). It was not great but I deserve that!
3 PM: Cab to the airport
I caught the flu on the flight home and have now been in bed for a week! Welcome back to America, baby.

Attention, New Britain community!
An alarming incident that unfolded at Slade Middle School earlier this week. According to district officials, a shocking event occurred when a middle schooler allegedly distributed edibles to a select group of classmates during school hours.
Principal Andrew Mazzei addressed the incident, expressing deep concern and assuring swift action. The administration is actively collaborating with law enforcement authorities to conduct a thorough investigation and hold accountable those involved in this disturbing incident.
Principal Mazzei emphasized the school's unwavering commitment to maintaining a zero-tolerance policy towards drug use. The safety and well-being of every student remain their top priority, and they are taking all necessary measures to ensure a secure learning environment.
In light of these unsettling events, the school district urges all parents and guardians to be vigilant and regularly inspect their children's bags. By actively participating in this process, we can collectively prevent the entry of potentially dangerous items onto school premises.
Principal Mazzei acknowledged the impact such incidents can have on students, parents, and staff, and assured everyone that any threat to student safety will be treated with utmost seriousness. The school administration, in close coordination with local authorities, is fully committed to addressing this issue promptly and effectively.

2023.06.01 16:50 7dinguses flipper lied about rewiring house

hi there! i bought my house in 2019 from a flipper and since then have (unsurprisingly) found a bunch of issues. yesterday i went to swap out a lighting fixture and discovered some knob and tube wiring mixed in with a bunch of very old and bad wiring.
in 2019, the flipper pulled a permit (and passed inspection) with the description "rewire" - today, I had an electrician come out to look at the bad wiring in the fixture, and he found a LOAD of stuff wrong at the electrical panels, and said "there's no way this house was rewired in 2019, and it never should have passed inspection."
what are my options here? is it feasible to go after the flipper almost 4 years later? i bought this house under the assumption that it was rewired but clearly it was not.
note: I live in Louisville, KY

2023.06.01 16:46 dog_tears [PI] Write the typical story of the 50's hard-boiled detective, but instead of people, he helps ghosts solve their pending affairs

Like an oiled, well-run clockwork, she was there behind her front bar; one of the only recurrent things in his life. Younger by a few years too much to not justify this shrouded interest, aside from the detective's other woes he never cared nor had the time to worry about anymore. Nevertheless, Alec indulged, sat on the stool as innate as an hour hand moves half an inch after 60 minutes.
"Doctor. Hi."
A running joke direly accumulated from frequent visits. Brooke said their conversations reminded her of therapy. He wasn't sure how to interpret that.
Grunting in response, Alec removed the hat off his head before leaning forward, seeking to hear her voice better. It was too distractingly serene. "Busy night?"
"Only in passing. Remember, this is just a diner that serves drinks. No food. You can imagine how broad of a target audience I have."
"I got an idea."
Every night, like clockwork. She wiped the counter and talked about some book she finished recently. He went through a glass of Irish Coffee for about three hours, right on the edge of dusk. Each time, like clockwork, Alec walked her home without so much of a doubt of his company being welcome, nor a prospect of an invite. He never will.
(But he yearned; the press of a mattress scented with her skin, sounds narrowly gleaned underneath desperation and so, so much guilt.)
Brooke mentioned once that she had trouble with eye contact. "You ever been married, Doctor?"
"Can't say I have. It never felt right."
"Me neither. My previous husband told me the brunt of the problems' were on my side of the equation. One decade down the drain." Her bittersweet smile tugged on her lips, and Alec looked away. "Perhaps I was just unlucky."
"Marriage appear to be reserved for other people instead."
She didn't respond. The detective shifted his weight uneasily, expression becoming strained. "That isn't to say I'm not impartial in most things."
They arrived at her doorstep. Alec faced the opposite street, inspecting the surrounding perimeter. Feet shuffling. Keys taken out of a pocket. A lingering pause that raised the hairs on the back of his neck. "Thank you." She hadn't turned the lock as of yet, seemingly wanting to say more. For a moment, silence prevailed, raising hackles left and right.
"Maybe...someone could sway your opinion, Doctor, if you'd let it happen." Brooke stepped inside. "Well, I'll be waiting at the bar, as usual. See you then."
Like clockwork, she would thank him before locking the door, effectively shutting him out until they meet again later. She would provide the distance which allowed him to properly gather his thoughts in a more appropriate subject after a dream-like state.
(Golden band flickering against sunlight as her hair did. The simmer of ocean, grains of sand between crevices.)
Though this time might be different, and the detective won't be able to sleep it off.
(Pure, genuine bliss.)
-
Someone clearing their throat woke Alec abruptly. He raised his head from the desk to acknowledge the visitor, drowsy after hours of drinking. "Good morning..."
"Morning, detective. I heard you're the kind of man to inquire about pending affairs."
Given the impression he displayed for himself, Alec's potential client raised her brow, assessing him with an unseen checklist. So far, it seemed he was failing to meet standards.
"No secretary to greet for you?"
"Line of work. Couldn't ask some poor girl to die in my lobby now, can I?" He squinted at the ghostly woman who hovered over his shelves, peering into stacks of files. "How'd you come to know my services?"
"Pulled major strings. Had to give up a part of my space. I'm told it'd be worthwhile."
The detective straightened. Took a cigarette sitting on his ashtray and lit a match. "They aren't rumors passed by word of mouth. I strive to finish cases I've taken up."
She wore a striking pale green dress with a subtle slit on the side, showing off white, porcelain skin. Her hair became light reflecting on the bark of oak, long and slick on her bare shoulders. There was a weary manner about her tone, bleeding into her whole demeanor.
When she stared into his eyes, Alec couldn't help but be reminded of someone else. "Good. I need your help. My sister was murdered, and I want to know the son of a bitch who did this."
A/N: a little something i cooked up. there's still a lot i had planned for this prompt, but i think i'll leave it here for now. had a lot of fun conceptualizing lol.

2023.06.01 16:12 Otarih Story was removed by mods, please help me understand why

As far as I have checked the community guidelines, I did not violate any of them, so I am surprised as to why my story was removed. I would be really happy to get some input and critique as to what is wrong with my writing, so I can improve to better contribute in the future. Thanks in advance! I'll attach the post in question here:
Something is wrong with my dreams
You won't believe this, but I swear on my life, it's the truth. I think I'm losing my goddamn mind. I have to... okay, okay, I need to start from the beginning. See, I've been dabbling in lucid dreaming lately. Been having these vivid, messed up nightmares, you see... I just wanted some semblance of control over my mental state, you know?
I felt like therapy wasn't cutting it anymore, I needed something more, so I gotten into this lucid dreaming thing. But the things I've seen, the encounters I've had, they've changed me, man. I've gotta get this out, gotta let the world know about this shit 'cause its importance... it can't be overstated.
So here's the thing, in my lucid dreams, I've been having these bizarre experiences. In the dreams, waking up suspended over an abyss, right? Surrounding me, there's this sterile, white room, bathed in blinding lights, and in the distance, a glass pane. Can't exactly make out what's behind it, and it paints this real surreal scene.
At first, it didn't bother me much. I woke up, had this lingering unease the whole day but shrugged it off. But then the next few times, as I regained lucidity in my dreams, the same scenario would play out. At first, I could do the usual stuff, you know, flying around and the likes, but then the dream would always, without fail, transition into this... this suspension above the abyss.
I'd be strapped in place with ropes or chains, my limbs stretched out toward the cool walls of this clinical, white room. And beneath me, just infinite darkness. It felt like gazing into the maw of oblivion, and it was... it was downright petrifying.
The dread, man. The absolute fucking dread. In particular that glass pane in the distance and the infinite abyss below me, it was eating away at me. I started wondering what was behind the glass, and what, if anything, was at the bottom of that godforsaken hole. Its vast, infinite expanse was just pulling me in, gnawing at my sanity. It's hard to describe, you know? It's not something you can just put into words.
Soon, it became a nightly routine. Almost every single dream ended with me suspended over that abyss, and this paralyzing sense of dread seeping into me, becoming more and more prominent. Eventually, I decided I had to stop, I couldn't go on like this. I spoke to my therapist about it, and they said it might be a manifestation of some negative childhood experiences, and advised me to quit lucid dreaming for the time being. It wasn't doing me any good, they said.
I upped my meds, and tried something else, but no matter what I did, I couldn't shake off the lucidity. It's weird because in the past, becoming lucid required effort, with reality checks, dream journaling, and whatnot. But now, even when I set the intention to not lucid dream, I found myself more lucid than ever, and always, without fail, ended up above the abyss.
At one point, I tried to inspect my body in the dream, and I think I was naked. I noticed something on my arm, like a small needle. I realized it was an IV drip. Something was being pumped into me. I freaked out, man. What the hell was happening? Was I part of some fucked up mind control experiment? Was I being drugged? I couldn't make sense of it all.
Soon after noticing the IV, I saw shadows moving behind the glass pane. There were figures there, watching me. The terror I felt about these figures lurking behind the glass was even more pronounced than the dread induced by the abyss. It was all kinds of messed up, but amidst the fear, I felt this sudden urge to know more.
So I shouted out, "Hey! Who's there? Talk to me, you creepy fucks!"
To my surprise, a voice crackled to life over the speakers. It said, "We've never seen someone maintain lucidity to this extent. Your perceptive abilities are impressively consistent. How did you achieve this?"
"I don't fucking know", I said. "It's not like I want to be here. Is this even real?"
The voice replied, "Yes, this is happening. This is the actual reality, the true nature of reality."
"What the fuck? You say my dreams are reality? You'll have to prove that for me to believe you at all", I said.
"You will see by the consistency of this reality", the voice said. "But first, demonstrate to us that you are indeed lucid enough for us to continue this conversation. It's not something we usually do. It might, however, be a path to conquer the darkness."
And then, like every other time, the dream ended.
I relayed the whole fucked up scenario to my therapist, who, unsurprisingly, suggested it was a fantastical manifestation of my own fears. My subconscious testing boundaries, pushing limits, trying to get under my skin. But when I asked them what to do, they proposed a plan: continue engaging with the dream. Try to spot inconsistencies in its logic. After all, if it is all just a product of my mind, it is bound to falter at some point.
So yeah, I haven't slept yet after that convo with my therapist, so I'll see how it goes. I just wanted to post this here so people can share whether they had similar dreams about a white room and/or bottomless hole like that. It's terrifying to me. But I think my therapist is right. I can prove that it's just a dream by showing how its logic is inconsistent you know... dreams are just sorta messy like that. Anyways, would be really happy to hear what you guys think about all this. Is this common for lucid dreamers? Should I be concerned? What could I ask the guy in the dream?
Thanks for reading everyone, it means a lot to be able to get this off my chest.
