2023.03.30 20:43 financequestionscdn Can refuse/negotiate my rent increase?

I just got a letter regarding signing my new lease which comes with a slight increase. The increase itself isn’t much however I don’t think it’s warranted in this case. The building was first occupied I believe in 2016/2017, 200+ units, managed by giant real estate investment company. No renovations or any improvements happened since signing the first lease. We’re however bombarded by construction all year, they tore down a small building facing the unit and are building a 9+ story new building therefore eliminating 70% of the “view” we used to have. Doesn’t that mean that the quality of life of the unit actually decreased? Could I contest the increase based on these arguments alone? I tried looking at the TAL calculator but I think it needs a lot of info I don’t have such as building revenue… If I were to contest this increase, is an email back to my building manager enough or do I actually have to go through the TAL? Thanks!

2023.03.30 20:31 Phagocyte_Nelson The Death of Empires

The Death of Empires

\" ADIÓS A SANDINO\" by Armando Morales, 1989
When my father was 14, he still lived in El Salvador. At the time the economy was a mess, inflation was through the roof and jobs were nowhere to be found. Employers didn’t have money to pay wages or salaries. My grandfather and father did what they had to do provide for the family. My father at this age already dropped out of school. Schooling in El Salvador is useless. School was public up until the 8th grade and passed that there was no point going to high school if one wasn’t planning to head to university, in our capital of San Salvador. My father quit school earlier, at the age of 10 to work with my grandfather, to provide. My father first worked with my grandfather when he was 4, old enough to be of some use. Everyday at dawn, my father ventured with my grandfather into the beautiful mountains, where they did odd jobs for instant cash or spent the day collecting wild fruits and vegetables to sell at the village market or take home for dinner. They did what they had to do to survive. I’ve seen the country firsthand, there are no jobs.
In fact, one of the complaints of Salvadoran immigrants by other Salvadoran immigrants is that they all have issues adjusting to the American economy when they get here. They’re so used to being on edge and scraping for every penny, that many forget that in the United States, you can actually get a job. Many people, in fact, do come here for work, but these 10 dollars/hr jobs are unheard of back in the motherland. They are like a dream come true to immigrants, so much so that the main issue is simply getting migrant workers to stick to one job, something they’re not used to. My father fell into this trap: when he arrived at the states he was 20. He worked in an aquarium, a mechanic shop, construction, you name it. It took my dad 6 years (when I was born) to finally settle down with his wife and newborn son and realize that having just ONE job was the correct order of things in the American job marketplace. He does landscaping now, and has so for the past 20 years, and is now specialized to drive trucks and heavy machinery. Not bad for someone for spent his childhood picking mangoes off of mountain cliffs.
Something else that burns deeply in my father’s memory was the war. My father barely understands it himself. He’s too scared to even talk about it at times. When he was 14 he was sent to the far side of the mountains by the grandpa to collect some tools they left the previous day. My dad couldn’t find the tools at first, and so he accidentally stumbled upon a cave. Inside the cave there was a lightbulb, and so my dad walked down into the cave, and next thing he knew he was being held at gun point. My father stumbled upon a secret rebel radio station. The guerrillas made him swear that he had no allegiance to the government and was not sent as a spy, but after a minute or two all they saw was a scared boy. So they took pity and let him go. They then packed their equipment and moved elsewhere down the mountain.
When my father returned to the village later that day, he was met at gunpoint again, but this time by the National Military Police, holding an assault rifle and demanding that he tells them why he was in the mountains for so long and if he had any affiliation with the guerrillas. My dad pleaded that he saw nothing, too scared that saying the truth would mean death for him. The soldier let him go, not knowing that earlier that morning, my father did, in fact, find the men they were looking for.
There are other stories too that my dad tells me: like the time his friend went into the mountains and accidentally triggered a land mine left by the military. He had a closed casket funeral that next Sunday. News would break out about how the Salvadoran government ordered the massacre of an entire village on the other side of the country, suspected of working with the rebels (they weren’t), and yet my fathers village was one of the most strategic holdings for the rebels for the entirety of the war. My father knew that at any moment, the government could decide to kill everyone he knew around him.
Empires are a fickle thing. They’re hard to look for and hard to imagine that one lives in one. No Jew or Gentile gave a second thought that they lived under the Roman Empire, just so long as they pay taxes to Caesar and their city wasn’t destroyed. But empires in the modern era are deceptive, almost evil.
I know personally how empires work. I live in the United States of America, where I can go to school, get a good job, probably afford health insurance, and buy whatever the f*ck I want at the Walmart, because it’s my money and I worked for it.
But
I am Salvadoran. My home country has more or less been involved in American politics since Teddy Roosevelt. Before him it was the British, and before them our colonizers of the Spanish. The Spanish were brutal: forcing everyone in these countries into peasantry, debt, and in some cases straight up slavery, all for the benefit of Spaniards from the mainland. They had all the money, bought every piece of land that once belonged to great empires of the Aztec, Inca, and Maya, and then forced everyone to work these lands, but to own none of it. What the Spanish did to us still explains conditions in Latin America to this day. The British never did this to Americans, who came to this continent looking specifically for land, and establishing settlements that would become the thirteen colonies. Meanwhile the Spanish put everyone to work and for nothing in return. Generation after generation: father dies but leaves nothing in his will to his sons, because he never had anything. It was all taken from his family in 1492.
All my family has to their name is a single concrete family house in El Salvador. It’s my great grandfather’s house. He built it himself as a young man and then raised my grandfather in it, so then raised my father in it, and then it ends there, because my father moved to the States. It’s actually the only asset my family has to their name in El Salvador. My family is one of the lucky ones to even have a house to our names. Most people rent land and build shacks to sleep in because shelter and roof overheard wasn’t included in the rent for the month.
When the Spanish were overthrown by Napoleon Bonaparte, this sent shockwaves to Latin America, who had no loyalty to their new French emperor. One by one, the Spanish colonies of Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Costa Rica declare their independence, without a single exchange of gunfire, for the Spanish at this point were squashed by Napoleon. An independent El Salvador saw the same society that it had under the Spanish: rich noble land owning elites paying low wages to the millions of hungry workers below them. I’d argue that it has always been somewhat like this. Our economy was based monoculture (meaning “one crop”). At times it was añil, which is like cotton and used for textiles, other times it was coffee, a growing commodity in the Modern Age. The landowners needed to sell their products somewhere, and with Spain gone, they looked to the empire that defeated the Spanish Armada: the British Empire. The British Empire militarily occupied parts of Nicaragua and Honduras, even making their own permanent colony of Belize. What did this mean for the people? It meant that the landowners kept the old ways for it was still profitable.
There is a common argument here in the United States that a certain point slavery stopped being profitable, which is why the Northern states industrialized and outlawed slavery, for they preferred wage workers to slaves, less costs overall. Well in El Salvador, this peasantry, this slavery, never stopped being profitable. From empire to the other, from the Spanish to the British, this backwards system of exploiting people by stealing land and then putting them into debt and forcing them to work for you still paid off as long as the British were willing to pay the pretty penny for that coffee. Sometimes empires are self inflicted, but let us remember that the peasants and poor people never had a say in any of these politics. No one voted to sell goods to the British, that was a discussion for only the elites who decided in a plan that would hurt poor people even more. It’s no surprise that these elites still had ties to Spain and not to El Salvador. There we see their true loyalty: to money, and at the costs of everyone’s livelihood. Sometimes these third world countries put themselves into the empires but if you dig deeper, you can see who really made that decision. And then it all makes sense. Shortly after the First World War, the United States became more involved in international politics, and especially those in Latin America. American business moved into Central America where they bought land for the rich elites and essentially used the same system the elites had for many centuries: paying the people low wages and not providing them any social mobility or education or benefits. Sometimes the US government itself intervened, by lending money to the individual nations who then used it to perpetuate the status quo. We lovingly call these nations "banana republics." In El Salvador our exports was coffee: a "coffee republic."
In my country, the working men were getting tired of this backwards economic system. So in the 1930s, they revolted. Half of the country revolt and protested the government, who was at the time led by a military dictatorship who only got into office by force. The response from the government? The government killed 40,000 people to put down an insurrection. This was 1932. We called it “La Matanza,” Spanish for “the slaughter.” The government claimed that the force was necessary to put down what seemed to be a communist revolution, but in fact of those 40,000 dead people, I can bet you that many if not all, never heard about a “Karl Marx” ever in their life. What they wanted was food for their family and for the government and elites to STOP GETTING IN THE WAY OF IT.
The next 50 years were of suppression. People were silenced immediately and everyone continued working m. By this time the country had somewhat industrialized so they old peasants became poor manufacturing workers, if they were lucky. In places like my dads village, although they now had their freedom, they had no jobs around them.
Slowly a second revolt was brewing. The government shut down protests to the war with Honduras, violently, which signaled every leftist guerrilla in the countryside to decide that now was the time to finally overthrow the government.
I can’t tell you if El Salvador would have been better if the communists won. What I can tell you is that things were bad already, and then the government made it worse. The United States at this time was involved in the Cold War, and suspecting that these new guerrillas may have ties to the Soviets, D.C. flooded millions of dollars to the Salvadoran dictatorship to suppress and put down the communist insurrection. The United States military personally trained some of the battalions in the Salvadoran army, with new counter guerrilla warfare strategies and tactics that the Americans learned from Vietnam. These battalions would then go on to become death squads. We had many names for the death squads, and they were feared. Guerrilla or not, they weren’t afraid to shoot anyone in the back of the head in the name of law and order. In reality, the death squads created anarchy, and made the people more sympathetic to the communists. Here was a simple fact: the communist guerrillas, although they lived amongst the people and were printed in the news as being terrorists, never executed a civilian. The Salvadoran government on the other hand though, every week there would stories of death squads breaking into peoples home and murdering them in front of their children. These children then took shelter in the orphanages that the communists ran. The communists had shelter for refugees and orphans, people who had to escape war or lost everything in it. They provided schooling and taught many for the first time how to read and write. The guerrillas were on volunteer basis, if you didn’t want to join the ranks, you didn’t have to, but you were always welcomed to stay as long as you wanted. Many of these people eventually found their way into Honduras to escape the war, and some even made the daring and perilous journey to the USA. It wasn’t hard for the Salvadoran people to pick a side: one side wanted the best for you and the other side had no issue murdering you and your entire family for political gain.
When I read about the war, I see a culmination of centuries of oppression onto a people. And when those people had enough, they were murdered. Around 80,000 people were killed. 5,000 people went missing and still are. Half of the country was displaced and had to move homes. And finally, 500,000 Salvadorans decided that they had enough, and left the country.
I see an empire in the work, and just like how the Romans had to put down peasant revolts regularly, the Salvadoran government, under direction and aid of the American Empire, did what empires always do in history; they oppress and kill. We’ve all see Star Wars. And before the Americans, it was the British, and before them, the Spanish, and before them the Aztecs, and before then we don’t know but I must assume that this sh*t never ends. Not until the people revolt, and revolt successful.
I mean, that’s how the Americans did it. They were being oppressed by the British Empire so they revolted and forcefully removed themselves from the equation. And look at how America is now. It’s only ironic at the Americans would then go around and used it’s wealth and influence to dominate other smaller countries, kind of like how the British treated them before 1776.
This is imperialism: a system in which a more developed nation either directly or indirectly controls an underdeveloped nation who cannot defend itself or have any sway in the argument, and to the benefit of a small elite in the nation. This is usually through military force, but sometimes it’s economic and is more akin to a trade empire. Indian princes swore allegiance to the Crown to establish the British Raj, all without a vote or election, no voice at all for the people, who then had to take matters into their own hands. African warlords supported the slave trade and sacrificed their morals for a quick buck. Look at how imperialism turns brother against brother, a nation onto itself. And the only people who suffer are the starving masses of the underdeveloped nation, who have two choices: fight or flee.
My country chose fight.

2023.03.30 20:30 depresssedpsychmajor Quebec Landlord & tenant issues; My landlord is blackmailing me...

Hello, francophone and/or civil law connoisseurs of Reddit. I need some help...
Ill keep it brief but my apartment is violently unsafe and I took my problems to the legal aid and housing people at my campus and did all the right procedures. Now that it is all said and done, my only last step is to go to the tenant board and get the hell out. However, my landlord let me know this morning that she’ll only let me terminate my lease early & without penalty if I essentially agree to keep my mouth shut and not tell the tenant board anything. I don't know what to do because obviously, I want to leave, but I don't want to let her get away with renting the unit again to the next vulnerable student who doesn't know any better... Can she legally do this? Is this not essentially blackmail? (For the record, I have so much against her and she is likely saying this because she knows it would end in my favour if it became a legal issue)
Her exact words were as follows by text:
"I am confirming that we agreed to let you terminate your lease early due to the fact that you are not satisfied with the apartment after 11 months of occupancy. We are doing it in good faith. There will be no penalty for terminating your lease early as long as you give us 4 weeks notice and agree that there will be no recourse to litigation or anything in that matter... That means when we agree to part ways, you will not file for any complaint against the landlord, you will not request rent reimbursement or refund, you will not do anything harmful to the landlord and or the building etc."
Any help is greatly appreciated! This is my first ever apartment and I have no idea what to do. In addition, my home province is a common law province which changes a lot.

2023.03.30 20:27 MjolnirPants Jerry and the Apocalypse: Part 60

Part 59
Lieutenant General Marcus Stanley, United States Army
Marcus stomped into the TOC. One of the gods was already there, the naked black woman. He racked his brain for a second to remember her name.
"Vintress, right?" he asked as he approached her, leaning over a folding table with a map spread out on it. Little glowing figures moved slowly about it; fist-sized knots of tentacles, and little pinpricks with arms and legs. The red-glowing ones, including the primordials themselves, were moving forward, while the green-glowing figures moved back.
"Yes, General," Vintress said.
"What's going on?" he asked.
"The primordials have rallied. They are pushing us hard, regaining ground we had taken back. I am observing now, to see their strategy, and seek a weakness."
"Anything jumping out yet?"
"No," Vintress said, and Marcus could hear her grinding her teeth. "They have become inexplicably smarter. And tougher. We have yet to kill one today."
"Let's hope that it disorganizes them as much as usual, then," Marcus said, though he doubted that would be the case. Not for any specific reason, it was just that that was the sort of thing that often changed when plans went sideways.
"We will soon find out," Vintress said. "Look."
Marcus followed her pointing finger to a gold-glowing figure. Marcus squinted, then put on his reading glasses and leaned over the map. It was the honor god, the one who'd tried to stop the vigilante and gotten his hand chopped off for his troubles.
"Tyndale, is it?" Marcus asked.
"Tysrane," Vintress corrected. "Yes," Marcus said. "Sorry, I've always been bad with names."
"Names are both trivial and deeply personal," Vintress said. Marcus glanced at her, meeting her eyes without sweeping her nude form with practiced ease.
"My name, Vintress, it literally means 'huntress' in a long lost language of a tribe I once favored. I adopted it to reflect my position when I acquired my domain. Prior to that, my name was Clisenryr. Do you know what that means?"
"I do not," Marcus said, playing along.
"It meant 'the angry one'."
Marcus eyed her with a blank expression, wondering where she was going.
"I do so enjoy watching this," she said, turning her eyes back to the map. Marcus followed her gaze just in time to see Tysrane turn into a streak that passed through one of the primordials. The creature exploded, and a hush fell over everyone in the TOC who wasn't glued to another screen or desk. Two seconds passed, and then the sound hit them.
A muted, basso crack echoed through the air. The loose fabric of the tent fluttered and Marcus felt the table and ground shaking for just an instant.
Marcus watched as the tiny, glowing primordial rained down around the battlefield as chunks, the largest chunk still in place, deflating and tumbling away.
"Heh," he said. "Rolling away like a booger on a greased pan."
Vintress squinted at him. "Is that a common idiom among your people?" she asked. Marcus laughed out loud. "No, it's just what came to mind when I saw it."
"Good," Vintress said. "It would raise disturbing questions if it was." Marcus couldn't help but agree with that one.
"They're not faltering," he said after a moment. The red enemies were still assaulting the green positions.
"Your men are holding their own," Vintress said. Marcus nodded. "Damn straight. Those are most experienced warfighters, and each position has at least one Spec Ops boy in it. Most have half an A-team. They're going to be punching well above their weight, and that, my friend, is indeed a common idiom."
"Yes, since we left you to your own devices, you have been consistently performing well above our own expectations of you."
Her tone was off. It sounded almost worried. Marcus eyed the goddess for a moment, letting his eyes slip down from her face to take in the set of her shoulders, her pose, the tension in her chest and stomach. There was a lot going on in her head. She was afraid, and not just of this new push by the primordials.
Marcus reached into his pocket and grabbed the heavily-encrypted phone there. It was a Blackberry, based on a model more than two decades old, but full of modern guts, including a tiny transmitter with about fifteen miles of range. His thumb brushed the built in keypad, finding and pressing buttons by feel.
----
Command Sergeant Major Eric Hale, 5th Special Forces Group
Hale stomped his way from one fighting position to the next, the incoming hail of spines apparently balking at the terrifying expression on his grizzled face, and refusing to come anywhere near him.
At least, that was the impression he hoped to give the men watching him. The truth was, his butthole was puckered so goddamn tight you couldn't pound a needle in it with a jackhammer.
He got to the forward-most position, two M2HBs, one of which was crewed only by two dead bodies, their helmets shattered by the spines.
"They're shooting back, sarge!" the assistant gunner said as he crouched down and pulled the bodies away from the gun.
"Yeah, the enemy tends to do that," Hale said with practiced nonchalance. He checked the gun, made sure it was in working order, then cleared the barrel with a two-round squeeze before settling down into a shooting position. He looked at the assistant gunner's nametape.
"Martinez, you're gonna have to assist both of us, right?"
Martinez checked the ammo in Hale's gun, then in the other.
"Pace your shots to Jeff," he said, hooking a thumb at his buddy on the other gun. "You've got about twice as much ammo left in the can as him. I'll keep you reloaded."
Hale nodded and aimed down the sites. He began to return some hate back to the senders, tearing apart spider crabs and shambling zombies with every round. He didn't notice the encrypted phone in his pocket buzzing.
Both gunners concentrated on the spider crabs, who were the ones who'd learned to shoot back. They spat the spines out of their mouths in short bursts. Their aim was shit, but there was enough of them that it didn't matter.
Hale emptied his can and let Martinez fit a new one. "Only one more can, Sarge," Martinez said. "And Jeff's up next." Hale nodded and focused on killing the spider crabs.
The ammo didn't last nearly as long as he'd have liked. He ran dry and unhooked the can. "That's it," he said as he folded up the bipod and grabbed the heavy gun by the carry handle.
"As soon as you're out, I want you to fall back to the rally point and rearm. Sergeant Lewis will show you where to set up, next. Huah?"
"Huah!" Martinez shouted as Jeff ran dry. Martinez quickly got his cans swapped and Jeff resumed shooting. Hale turned and began to make his way back. The rain of spines seemed to have actually gotten worse.
He threw the notion of striking an intimidating figure to the wind and hustled back to the rally point, dropping the weapon off at the stack. First Sergeant Lewis walked up.
"Lewis," Hale said. "Send two guys up to FP Echo to pick up a couple bodies, then try to find someone to man this gun."
"I'll do what I can, Top," Lewis said. "Lot of losses today."
"Relatively," Hale pointed out. From what he'd seen, they were standing at about one and a half percent casualties, and that included the wounded, who were being treated magically and sent back within hours of coming off the line.
"Yeah, but you know that still affects morale," Lewis pointed out.
Hale nodded and reached in his pocket to check his phone. "Shit," he swore as he saw the message.
"Can I help?" Lewis asked. Hale thought about it, then turned the screen to let him read it.
Gods r scared of us, might turn. b prpred
"Shit," Lewis said.
"Spread the word," Hale told him with a sigh. "I can't imagine a worse time to get this news, so naturally, this is when it happens. Get someone down to the clinic to get our boys rushed through and get the docs out and into the MASH tents. Have word sent back to camp to get everybody out of those standing-doorway rooms and into barracks tents. I was everyone in their battle rattle and carrying their weapon, and I mean everyone. Cooks, techs, logi boys... Every fucking one."
"Right," Lewis said with a nod. "Anything else?"
"Yeah, pray this is just the General being paranoid."
"Pray to who?" Lewis asked.
"Good fucking point," Hale said, clapping him on the shoulder. "Go on, I gotta go find the Colonel."
Hale stomped off towards the HQ tent as Lewis jogged away. He found Colonel Stanislaw leaning over a radio console with headphones on.
"...that's right, Major. We're splitting out from the magic fuckers. One second, my Top's here now." The Colonel covered his mouthpiece with one hand and slipped one of the speakers off his ears.
"Did you see the General's message?" Stanislaw asked. Hale nodded. "I sent Lewis to get our people out of their facilities and get everyone armed."
"Good. I'll issue orders to the officers to let you and Lewis lead the way. But right now, I need to discuss strategy. Let me wrap this up."
"Major," he said, unhanding the mic. "Major, I've put Top and Sergeant Lewis in charge of the prep. Spread word to the officers to defer to them on this. Yes, that's right. Damn straight, they are. Good. Report back to me in, let's say, ninety minutes. Good. Stanislaw out."
He pulled the headphones off. "Walk with me, Top."
Hale fell into step beside the Colonel and they walked out of the camp. When they'd gotten far enough away, they stopped.
"What are your initial thoughts?" the Colonel asked.
Hale frowned. "Not good, sir. They can do all kinds of tricky shit with their magic that we can't counter. From what I hear, we can strike back, but it won't be easy. With over twenty of them still here, I don't think there's enough of us to stand."
"We don't really have a choice," Stanislaw said. "We can't let these primordials get past us, or the whole world is done for."
"Then I say we concentrate everything right around the FHQ, sir. We'll have the docs set up at the aid station, have the men break down a couple of the tents. Motor pool and cavalry staging is going to be a bitch to move on short notice, but we'll get it done."
"I know you will. I need to go find Major Danvers, work out placement for the cavalry if we have to fall back. Go ahead and get started prepping."
"Yes, sir," Hale said, snapping the Colonel a salute. Stanislaw saluted back, and Hale jogged off. As he approached the HQ, a humvee pulled up and two men climbed out. Hale recognized the General's bodyguards right away. Both were large, bearded men in DADPAT, with backwards-turned baseball hats and gucci-ed out M4s. They emerged and began prowling around the area before one of them clicked his radio, said something and then walked over to Hale.
"Eric," he said as he approached.
"Hey, Jim," Hale replied. "Colonel just ran off to talk to Danvers about cavalry placement in case this emergency happens."
Jim nodded. "Fucked up shit," he said. Hale nodded back. General Stanley stepped out of the vehicle, spotted Hale and walked over. Hale came to attention and saluted. Stanley saluted back casually, "As you were, Sergeant. Did you see my message?"
"I did, sir, as did the Colonel. Preparations are already under way. If you need to talk to the Colonel, he's on his way to Major Danvers as we speak."
"I'm actually here to talk to you, Top," Stanley said. "I've got a job for you."
"Whatever you need, sir. I should inform you that the Colonel has asked me to oversee the transfer of equipment and personnel from the allied facilities to our own and the consolidation of our forces here."
"I'll step in to handle that personally, Eric. You remember a fellow named Bill Martin?"
Hale nodded. Bill and he had served together. He know Bill was a solid soldier and a holy terror in close quarters.
"Well, Bill's one of the executives at the DCM Group. I want you to take Jim and Mac with you, head back earthside and get with him. Tell him about our concern here and find out what kinds of resources they can spare. I've got six million budgeted for expenses, and I'll drop every dime of it on them if they can provide enough support to help us survive a two-front war out here.
"After you're done with that, I want you to go see the man himself and explain the situation to him. You tell him I said the following, verbatim. 'Sir, if this shit goes down and we don't throw everything we have at it in one big mass, right off the bat, I do not think we will survive'. You tell him those exact words, and that I mean it. I've already called in an appointment for you at three PM local time. Don't worry about getting there on time, just make sure you get it all done."
"Sir, yes, sir," Hale said, snapping another salute. Though he could barely believe it, the pucker factor was even higher than it had been walking out to that gun position.
Stanley saluted back, far more crisply than usual. He turned to his bodyguard. "You heard me, Jim," Jim nodded and stepped over next to Hale. "Ready when you are, Top."
Nate, the General's other bodyguard, wandered over. "We set?" he asked. Hale and Jim both nodded.
"Take my transport," Stanley said. "And get back here as soon as you're done."
They climbed into the Humvee and took off.

Bill Martin, President of Physical Security, Divine Crisis Management Group
Bill looked up as the door opened to reveal Julie. She looked haggard and run down.
"You look amazing," he said as soon as the door closed. He made sure his voice sounded sincere. Julie smiled and walked right over to sit on his lap and lay her head on his shoulder.
"Thank you," she said. "I feel like I'm being torn in a million directions. And I just got more bad news."
"What's that?"
"Jerry's gone radio silent. I got in touch with Michelle Vasquez, and she told me he's run off to kill the goddess who took his family."
"Shit," Bill muttered. He waited a beat before adding. "I can't really blame him, though."
"Except he was supposed to be tracking down the escapees," Julie said.
"The man's lost his family. He's wild with grief, right now. And truth be told, if he manages to kill her, that's not exactly a bad thing."
Julie lifted her head to meet Bill's eyes. "Are you defending a revenge quest?" she deadpanned.
"No, just pointing out that this one is advantageous. It's liable to produce a more positive outcome than him returning the escapees."
Julie sighed. Everybody was turning on her over the issue of Jerry. And then she sighed again, because Bill was still Bill.
"I'm gonna lock that door," she said. "Because I need to unwind."
Bill frowned in confusion. "What are you going to-" he stopped as the light came on in his eyes, making Julie smirk. "Ahh, I get it. What the hell, I mean, you're the boss, right?"
Julie stood and locked the door, then turned towards Bill and began unbuttoning her shirt. "I used to never understand people who got a thrill out of risking getting caught," she said as she peeled her shirt off and reached back to unhook her bra.
"But I think I'm starting to get it. It's the relief of getting away with it," she said, dropping her bra on the floor. Bill stared in fascination, the sight of her stripping easily the most alluring thing he'd ever seen. She unzipped the side of her skirt and then peeled it off to reveal a set of garters and a hard-on.
"You uh," Bill said, the words difficult to find as his mind focused on the imagery. "You planned for this.. Uh, this morning?"
Julie smiled and walked back to him, loosening his tie. "I stopped wearing underwear when we started dating," she said as she pulled it out of his collar. Bill put his hands on her hips and leaned forward to kiss her ribs, just below the solar plexus, where it always made her gasp.
Her gasp came at the same instant that Bill recognized the sound of someone pounding on the door.
"Shit!' he cursed. He looked around for a second, shooting to his feet. "Get under the desk, quick!"
Julie crawled under the desk and Bill moved to the door, kicking her discarded clothes behind a potted plant. Right as he opened the door, he cursed himself for not kicking them to her.
Three men immediately walked in, pressing past him. Two were in DADPAT and armed, the third in a set of ACUs with a CSM's stripes. Bill blinked as he recognized the Sergeant.
"Eric? Eric Hale?" he asked.
Eric stuck out his hand. "Hey Bill, been a long time." Bill shook his hands. "Yeah, it has. Who are your friends?"
"General Stanley's bodyguards. Jim and Nate. They're solid."
Bill held out a hand to each, who shook it with a respectful nod.
"So what brings you here?" Bill asked. He stepped over to his desk and sat down behind it, careful not to trod on Julie. She immediately slid a hand up his inner thigh and he struggled to maintain his composure. Eric took a seat while the two bodyguards stood.
"I need to hire as much magical muscle as I can for six million dollars, as fast as possible."
Bill frowned. Julie let go of him. "What for?"
Eric glanced around meaningfully. Bill nodded at the door, which one of the bodyguards closed, then he pressed his fingers to the rune inscribed on the right corner of his desk.
"Total privacy," he said.
"We have reason to believe the gods may turn on us," Eric stated.
"Holy shit," Bill said.
"Hell of an understatement," one of the bodyguards rumbled. Bill thought it was Jim. "You must have been a ranger."
"I was," Bill confirmed. "Shit, we're spread pretty thin right now. Wizards are mostly out levitating ruined buildings and healing injured people. This is some serious shit, though."
"Don't ask me why, I don't know. But Stanley's behind this, and I trust the old man's judgement."
Bill nodded. He remembered Stanley back when he was a full-bird Colonel. He'd been a solid, brilliant and trustworthy officer back then.
"I'll start making calls. I've got to hold some back, but I think I can round up about a hundred or so for you. You want extra shooters?"
"With magic guns?"
"Magic guns, armor, uniforms, gear... The works."
"Yes, very much."
"I can get you eighty before you leave the office. Another hundred and sixty in a couple of hours, and two hundred more by tomorrow."
Eric nodded. "How much?" he asked.
"Not a dime!" Julie said from under the desk. The three visitors all jumped. Bill rolled his chair back as Julie stood. Despite her state of undress (and Bill was relieved to see that she wasn't aiming any anatomy around any more) and the bags under her eyes, she managed to project a regal, businesslike air.
"We'll work up a bill after the fact for expenses," Julie clarified. "And we'll present it to the feds. I know the General's budget was to be used for supplies. If the gods are turning on us, they'll need to spend that money. And before you three go, you can all head down to the armory and get geared up. There's a quartermaster who can tell you how it all works."
"Thank you, Ma'am," Eric said, standing up and carefully keeping his eyes on Julie's face.
"Thanks," Jim added.
"Awesome, sir," Nate said. The room went quiet as Bill narrowed his eyes at the bodyguard. Eric turned to glare at him as well, and Jim shook his head slowly. Nate frowned in confusion, then his eyes widened.
"My apologies, Ma'am," he said quickly. "I just... I don't... I mean, I didn't mean anything by it. I'm cool with, I mean, it's none of my business, I don't-"
"Enough," Bill snapped. "Slip of the tongue. You're good. Just go get geared up. There will be a team waiting for you in the lobby in thirty minutes."
He turned to his computer and began to type quickly, issuing the orders to assemble as many as they could. He pointedly did not meet Nate's eyes, because he didn't want to lose his temper.
Julie ushered them out.
"I'm really sorry, Ma'am, I swear I didn't mean anything..." Nate stammered as they left. Julie patted his shoulder and closed the door, turning back to Bill.
"Orders are sent," Bill said. Julie gave him a funny look, which Bill couldn't interpret. He decided to assume the worst.
"He started apologizing and making excuses before I could even figure out how best to threaten him-" Bill started to say defensively, but Julie threw her head back and laughed.
After a moment, Bill's face cracked into a smile and he joined her.
"Well, that was ironic," Julie managed to wheeze as she walked back and began to unbutton Bill's shirt. "But since we got caught anyways... Hehe, we might as well enjoy it."

2023.03.30 20:23 Revnant664 I think that the seals mechanic of Fire Emblem: Engage should be used in the game.

I've been playing Engage for awhile instead of FEH, and I think the Seals mechanic is a clever idea.
The mechanic is split into two parts: second seals and Master Seals. Second seals allows your unit to change to another class at the same level and restart your unit's max class level to one to continue building their stats (no stats are lost doing this if they remain the same class). Master Seals allow the unit to graduate to an advance class.
The latter benefit of Second Seals is what I think will be a major benefit in FEH. The ability to build a unit's stats would be a major boon for early book units who suffer from the early refines and and increasingly aged stats. If they could reset to x level and train to get a minimum of +5 to each Stat, It would help tremendously in bridging the gap.
I think Master Seals would be interesting if it allowed you to change a unit's weapon type so they can use arcane weapons outside of their class type (with limitationsof course). If IS is worried about monetization of this feature, I think the seals could simply be placed in the celestial stone shop. I'm curious to hear west you think of this.

2023.03.30 20:20 koellaa69 New computer, problems

Hi there,
Finished building my new computer recently, but there’s a bug I can’t get rid of (see video). Screen keeps messing up even in Windows, and when trying to play some games there’s fireworks all over the screen etc.
Specs on new comp: - asus rog strix z690-f gaming - intel i9-12900kf - lian li galahad aio 360 - samsung pro 980 m2 - asus tuf 3090 oc - asus rog strix 1000w - corsair dominator platinum rgb ddr5-5600 2x16gb - samsung 49’’ curved g9 neo (240hz)
Things I have tried: - reconnecting all cables on MB - tried different m2 - tried my old gpu (gtx 1650) in new computer - tried using only one memory stick - old computer works fine on the monitor - have tried downloading all new drivers (even though I don’t think this problem should occur on a completely fresh install in the first place)
To me, this leaves the psu (reconnecting all cables or even new unit) and the motherboard. I’d rather not mess with these two, so I’m hoping there’s another solution. Any ideas? Would really appreciate some help here :-/

2023.03.30 20:19 LlywelynTheLast D&D Campaign in Runeterra!

Hey everybody! Dungeon Master here, and I'm a big fan of the League of Legends worldbuilding. I'm sure it's been done before, but the world of Runeterra and the colorful heroes and villains of League seem like an absolute amazing candidate for a really fun D&D campaign! The only issue is- I'm struggling to decide on a single plot for my players to follow. With such a vast and amazing world, I want everybody to be able to travel and experience as much of it as they can, truly encapsulating the true adventure-fantasy experience. I love building up to an epic battle to save the world by the end of the story, and prefer for the entire plot to gradually lead up to it. With a little bit of brainstorming, I came up with a few ideas, but I was wondering what you experts might have to say.
  1. Darkin Saga, following along some of the stories in Legends of Runeterra's last expansion, which followed the various darkin scattered around Runeterra being awakened by Aatrox to fight against Xolaani. Maybe the heroes can claim their own Darkin weapons and fight against the possession by sheer will, like Kayn and Rhaast?
  2. The Watchers, maybe starting with some smaller-scale conflicts in the Freljord, but eventually having to unite them together and storm Lissandra's citadel to prevent the Watchers from being released from the ice, as they are finally breaking free. Sort of a unite against a common enemy to save the universe.
  3. Ruination Reimagined, we all know the Sentinels of Light event was just about as fun as a swift kick in the balls, so this could be my attempt to fix some of Riot's mistakes by letting the players form the Sentinels, and team up without compromising existing character's stories while still fighting against some friendly faces to stop the Ruined King.
  4. Void Invasion, the event we all wished would actually happen. Maybe some heroes stomping about Shurima and discovering traces of the void and Malzahar's cult or Rek'Sai's pack, only to discover the true threat that is coming and run around closing Void Gates and adventuring to Icathia to stop some voidborn behemoths.
What do you all think? Are any of these ideas worth delving into, or just wishful thinking? I'm nowhere near an expert when it comes to the lore here, so any knowledge you all could share would be much appreciated. And of course- any ideas or feedback would be more than welcome!

2023.03.30 20:13 beardify Every Building Has A Story. Do You Know Yours?

It was the last building of the day: a tall gray rectangle on a humdrum street in a forgettable neighborhood. The kind of place where the average tenant was a pearl-clutching eighty-year-old who wouldn't buzz the door open for Christ himself.
In my work as a gas meter inspector, I'd run into a lot of types like that. Even with my official-looking vest and clipboard, people were suspicious…and I couldn't say I blamed them.
After all, any psychopath could buy an official-looking vest and clipboard.
By my third week on the job, I could size up buildings by sight. I could usually tell whether I'd be dealing with busy professionals working from home, families with multiple children who were almost sure to be out of the house when I buzzed, or packs of young people who left their doors unlocked and often didn’t even know what a gas meter was.
I breathed a sigh of relief when I saw a bucket propping open the exterior door. The corridor was gloomy, but I could just make out a pudgy retiree in a sweater vest mopping the hallway.
"Good afternoon," I waved from the street, "I'm for the gas company…"
"Well, come on in then, lad." His teeth glinted in the dim light, and for some reason, those words sounded like a threat.
The hair on the back of my neck stood up, and I realized I did not want to step into that dark hallway, with its ugly wood paneling and wet tile floor that smelled like bleach. The old man leaned on his mop expectantly.
If I didn't register the building today, I told myself, I'd just have to come back tomorrow; it would be out of my way and off my route, and I was already barely meeting my quota…
I sighed and walked toward the janky, old-fashioned elevator.
"This is a safe neighborhood. Usually." The old man commented as I passed. I realized why his voice seemed to snarl and why the light reflected so strangely on his teeth: they were made of metal, some kind of weird prosthetic…
The old man must have noticed how I recoiled, because he held out a hand to steady me.
"A few weeks ago I was walking down that very street outside the door when a group of teenagers came running up behind me. They grabbed my wallet and my watch, and when I tried to scream, they smashed out my teeth with a bottle." He smiled, as if to demonstrate the delinquents' ghastly work. "Going up?"
At least the guy didn't follow me into the elevator, I thought, as I rode the rickety thing up to the top floor. As usual, I’d work my way down, knocking on doors and marking down the responses I received. No one was home in apartment 5A, and at apartment 5B, a handwritten note was tapped to the door:
Gas Meter: 8043.24 – We DO NOT Open The Door For Strangers!
I rolled my eyes and took note of the number before continuing down the stairs. There was no natural light in the hallway, which was lit only by dusty wall lamps. The hair on the back of my neck was standing up, but I couldn't figure out just what it was about the place that unnerved me so much. It wasn’t like this was the rundown tenement where a junkie had chased around me with a dirty needle, or the eerily-clean penthouse where I’d found a heiress floating in a bathtub with her wrists cut…
Even so, each time I knocked, I found myself hoping that no one (and no thing) would answer. When the door of apartment 4B opened just a crack, I think I actually jumped backward a little.
“Yeah?” A cigarette dangled from the lips of the overweight blonde woman peering at me from the other side of the chain. She looked me over with worry–maybe even fear–in her tired blue eyes. “What?”
“Hi, I’m here to–”
“Oh. Right. The gas. Well, c’mon in…” I could hear the echo of cartoons and squealing kids from deep inside the apartment. Something bothered me about the way the woman had answered the door, but I was halfway to the meter before I realized what it was: she’d opened up almost as soon as I’d knocked. Like she’d been listening for something…
As I scooted around overflowing stacks of cardboard boxes, I told myself that I was letting my imagination run away with me.
“Sorry,” the blonde woman coughed. “We’re still unpacking.”
“It’s alright,” I said, slipping on a child’s sock.
“I see why they can’t keep tenants, though.” She blew out a cloud of smoke. “Whoever’s in the apartment below us makes noise like you wouldn’t believe. If I had a choice, I’d get us outta here, but I can’t afford it. And even if I could, I wouldn’t wanna do that to the kids. The move was rough on them…they keep having these dreams, you know? ‘Night terrors,’ the doctor calls them…”
“Yep, well, change is hard when you’re young.” I was only half-paying attention; my work app had just crashed, and was taking forever to reboot. When it finally finished loading, I input the number and flashed her a smile. “All done. Have a good one!”
“You too…” she looked like she wanted to say something more, but she just gave me a tired little wave. She locked the door behind me as soon as I left.
I proceed down to 3A and 3B. A knock on 3A’s door received no answer; I was walking toward 3B when the door swung open wide.
There was only darkness on the other side.
“Come in!” an elderly woman’s voice called out.
“Um,” I hesitated. “Could you turn on the lights for me, please?”
No answer. My heart was racing as I stepped into the gloom. I ran my hand along the wall, feeling for a switch–
The door slammed shut behind me. I would’ve sworn I heard an old woman’s voice whispering in the blackness: “Don’t worry. Grandma won't let him get you…”
Suddenly, I felt hard plastic beneath my fingers–a lightswitch!
The bulb flickered on…revealing a dusty, empty room with grimy yellow walls.
“H-hello?” I ventured. No answer.
I wanted to raise the blinds to let in some exterior light, but the cords had been cut…and besides, I wasn’t supposed to touch anything other than the gas meter. As I walked past the lightless kitchen, I chanced a look inside.
A pale man wearing nothing but filthy underwear stood with his back to me, holding himself and rocking back and forth..
I muttered an apology and kept moving. I’d walked in on worse things, but the feeling of wrongness in this place was becoming impossible to ignore. I told myself that all I had to do was get to the end of the hallway and read that damn meter, then it would all be over…
I heard movement in a room across the hall: a child, barely visible in the gloom. The glow of the apartment’s single lightbulb reflected in his milky eyes.
“You shouldn’t be here.” The child snarled, taking a step toward me.”HE’ll see you.” Now I could see that his face was purplish and bloated…and that there were bruises in the shape of bony hands around his neck. “Grandma said she would save us. But she couldn’t…because this is HIS place, and NOTHING can protect you from HIM.”
I moaned and took a step backward. Another child appeared behind the first, his neck twisted at an impossible angle.
“What’s wrong with you?” it asked. ”Can’t you see that you’re in hell?”
The bathroom door creaked open; I ran.
Sprinting past the kitchen, I noticed for the first time the bloodless knife wounds in the pale man’s back. I could hear footsteps, but they weren’t coming from the hallway…they were coming from above me! Filthy footprints appeared on the ceiling, closing in on where I stood. Whatever was making them panted with wet, excited breaths…
I tugged on the doorknob. Of course, it wouldn’t open.
“Help…HELP!” I screamed, pounding on the door.
In a few seconds, the thing would be right on top of me–
A key turned in the lock and I practically fell into the hallway. It was the retiree from earlier, still holding his mop bucket.
“Did you get locked in or something?” he chuckled. “You’re lucky the super gave me a spare set of keys!”
I moaned something incomprehensible and gestured over my shoulder–
But there was nothing behind me but yellowed walls.
“Let me guess,” he snorted, “you saw that apartment wide open, went inside, then the door blew shut behind you? It happens all the time in this drafty old place. I keep telling the super that he needs to fix the damn lock so that door doesn’t creak open all the time, but he won’t lift a finger until he gets some renters in there. And good luck with that! I wouldn’t go in that apartment if you paid me!”
“What do you mean?” I gasped, trying to keep up with the retiree as he walked back downstairs.
“It was a tragedy, a real shame. We all knew the old woman who lived there was a bit batty, but nobody realized how far gone she was ‘til it was too late. She thought that there was some kind of ‘presence’ in the apartment–‘HIM,’ she called it–and she convinced herself that ‘HE’ was gonna take her grandkids away…so she strangled’em in their sleep. To protect them, she said. Can you believe that? Then, when her son found out what she’d done, she stabbed him to death right there in the kitchen…” the retiree shook his head as he locked up the mop and bucket in a grimy janitorial closet. “The strangest part was how they found the old woman afterwards. She was laying right in the middle of the living room with a face like she’d been screaming her head off, but there wasn’t a mark on her…it was like she’d been scared to death. But listen to me! Rambling on and on when you’ve got a job to do. It’s 1246.15.” The retiree finished cheerfully.
“Huh?” I mumbled.
“My gas meter. It’s 1246.15, and I’m in apartment 2A. Got all that?” My legs felt weak. I staggered toward the door. “Hey!” the retiree shouted after me, “where are you going? Don’t you have more apartments to check?”
I did, but I didn’t check them–not that evening nor any other. I turned in my resignation as soon as I got back to the office. My days of walking into strange apartments were over, but what had happened in unit 3B of that anonymous gray apartment complex stuck with me.
It made me think that every building–just like every person–has its own true story…
And some of those stories are horror stories.

2023.03.30 20:12 Flimsy-Time-3497 [Build Help] PHD Student in Robotics ($1650 Budget)

Hello everyone, I need help with building a PC for work (I am a PHD student in Robotics).
What will you be doing with this PC? Be as specific as possible, and include specific games or programs you will be using. I research on multimodal sensor fusion. Real world camera, LiDAR, RADAR fusion. I will be using CARLA simulator (an unreal engine based autonomous driving simulator). Mostly, I use pre-trained neural networks but would like to occasionally train small scale networks in my PC as well. I use ROS (Robot Operating System). I will be using Ubuntu OS (20.04 LTS).
What is your maximum budget before rebates/shipping/taxes? $1650
When do you plan on building/buying the PC? Note: beyond a week or two from today means any build you receive will be out of date when you want to buy. Within the next month.
What, exactly, do you need included in the budget? (ToweOS/monitokeyboard/mouse/etc)
Tower.
Which country (and state/province) will you be purchasing the parts in? If you're in US, do you have access to a Microcenter location? Kalamazoo, Michigan, United States (49006) Unfortunately, the closet Microcenter Location is 2.5 hrs drive.
If reusing any parts (including monitor(s)/keyboard/mouse/etc), what parts will you be reusing? Brands and models are appreciated.
I will be using Ubuntu OS. I plan to use my old monitor, keyboard, mouse.
Will you be overclocking? If yes, are you interested in overclocking right away, or down the line? CPU and/or GPU?
Not sure currently.
Are there any specific features or items you want/need in the build? (ex: SSD, large amount of storage or a RAID setup, CUDA or OpenCL support, etc)
I would like 2GB SSD, 32 GB RAM. I need CUDA support as I work with deep learning models. I researched a bit for GPUs and found 4070 ti affordable and suitable for my tasks. I would appreciate your feedback.
Do you have any specific case preferences (Size like ITX/microATX/mid-towefull-tower, styles, colors, window or not, LED lighting, etc), or a particular color theme preference for the components?
Sizes or any aesthetics would not matter for me.
Do you need a copy of Windows included in the budget? If you do need one included, do you have a preference?
I plan to use Ubuntu.
Thank you so much for your time in reading this.I am open to further questions.

2023.03.30 20:07 Sea_Consequence_3132 21 est pc long term gamer friends wanted

Hey what’s up I’m looking others to play games with. I can honestly say after 3 years of searching I have only about 4 people who I play pc game with. Well Imma keep trying and maybe I’ll find that one person who I can game with every once in a while.
A little about me, I’m from the east coast of the states so my time zone is est. I’m 21 I like to watch some good ole anime and like listening to music. I’ve Also been collecting video games and I can say I have a nice collection even though my most expensive games are the Pokémon games.
Well enough about me let’s talk about games. I won’t like right now the main game I’ve been playing has been overwatch 2. I play both ranked unranked and I am currently a silver 2 in damage. Some others games I own and play are Left for Dead 2, gmod, Tower unite, Osu, Deep rock galactic, phsmo, and I also own gamepass and I can’t forget to mention fortnite but no build. For osu I can really only do 4 star maps and I recently just bought deep rock so I don’t know much about it. I’m down to try some new games but I do have some I will not play. Those include mmos, cods but if it’s Cold War I’ll play that. I think that’s pretty much it but for parting words. DO NOT SEND ME SERVER INVITES. I’m actually building one myself and it’s a bit small right now but if you’d like to join I would really appreciate you.

2023.03.30 20:07 OafishWither66 Help with Gigabyte PSU

So i am very new to the world of PC building and I made a rookie mistake of purchasing a P750GM gigabyte psu by accident. I just wanted to clear a few things After researching i found out my PSU might potentially explode under high stress. But, there was an apparent "fix" done to it by gigabyte. Also, my system will pull in around less than 500W, and it being a 750W PSU it shouldn't be under high stress (I'll be playing on an FHD monitor). My PSU is also not a part of the recall units and there weren't very many cases after 2021 regarding it bursting into flames (at least according to what i found).
I am planning to get a new replacement PSU in like 4 months, sadly cant really just buy a new one just yet ,trust me if i could i would. I just wanted to ask, if i turn off the power every night to the system, and taking into consideration what i said above, it shouldn't really be a problem for like 4 months right?PC Specs :CPU - 5800XGPU - Gigabyte 6700XT OCMOBO - Asus B550-F Wifi IIRam - 16x2 3600MHz Corsair Vengance LPXCooler - Deepcool AK620Storage - 2x1TB PCie 3.0 NVME M.2 Crucial P3PSU - Gigabyte P750GM ModularCase - Corsair 4000D AirflowCase fan - 6x 120mm Corsair AF120 (Regular Red, and yes i know i need to buy a fan hub since there arent enough ports on my MOBO)

2023.03.30 20:06 Sea_Consequence_3132 21 est pc long term gamer friends wanted

2023.03.30 20:02 KhoaFraelich A pivotal part to modern cars also makes it harder to protect from thieves

I have spent a fair amount of time researching antitheft devices recently. In my discussions with customers and vendors I have come to realize that most people don’t have a solid grasp on the depth of digitization present in contemporary vehicles. Given that, let’s take a moment and break it down.

Digitization was around in a limited fashion a decade earlier, but for the most part, vehicles from the early 2000s onward were the first to see widespread use of multiplexing, a digital communication network. Prior to this, vehicles were 100-per-cent analog. In other words, when the driver wanted to open their window on a power-window-equipped vehicle, they pushed the down button. By pushing that button an electrical switch was closed and a circuit was completed, like the light switch in your home. That circuit did one job, which was to power the window motor and send the window in a downward direction until you either released the button or the glass reached the bottom and shut itself off. When you pushed the up button, the electrical polarity reversed, and the motor went in the opposite direction. The two wires carrying the electricity served no other purpose. All electrical circuits in vehicles of those eras have the same mono use wiring functionality.

Enter multiplexing, where a single wire set could carry multiple signals. For example, your driver’s door power-window motor, power-door lock and remote-mirror commands can all be carried in a single wire set. A module under the dashboard typically encodes the information into a digital format and then another receiver module in the door decodes the information and then performs the task commanded by the driver. While it is far more complicated, this digitization reduced the overall amount of wiring running through the vehicle and is the key factor in the evolution of the automobile and advancement of safety features.

The digital network within an automobile has evolved and standardized into what is known as a Controller Area Network (CAN) bus. A modern vehicle can have as many as 70 control units onboard that all need a robust communication path. Your vehicle’s Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) and other safety items communicate on an isolated, high-speed network allowing your airbags to deploy in an instant when a collision occurs. Non-safety items communicate on a slower network.

So, why should you care? Well, when researching your own aftermarket antitheft devices, you need to consider the implications of devices that tap into the CAN bus. Many advanced kill-switch-style devices interrupt the CAN bus and require driver input prior to their vehicle being able to start. For example, the driver will have to push several buttons such as the defrost button or cruise-control master switch in a secret sequence to unlock the aftermarket theft module kill switch feature.

While this unit may be effective at preventing your vehicle from being stolen, there is a downside. The moment the vehicle has any electrical issues the antitheft unit will be suspect. These units are wired into critical onboard-vehicle systems, but manufacturers of these aftermarket antitheft units provide little, if any information on their operation or diagnostics. A technician will have little choice but to recommend complete removal of these units before any other vehicle diagnostics can proceed. Add to that, whatever factory electrical item that has actually failed in a vehicle will almost always result in some dealer service staff blaming either the sloppy installation or the aftermarket unit itself. This will be a problem for you when a warranty repair is being denied because of an installed aftermarket electrical device.

Your automotive questions answered
Dear Lou:

My wife and I bought a 2017 Subaru Outback 3.6 and recently were told it will need a “D” service every 100,000 kilometres that costs more than $1,500 to change spark plugs and fluids. Are we being hosed by the dealer? The service includes.

Replace spark plugs
Inspect engine and cabin air filters - replace if necessary
Replace transmission and differential fluids (FR & RR)
Inspect and adjust all fluid levels
Test battery with midtronics tester
Inspect operation of all lights, wipers, and washers
Test coolant, inspect hoses and clamps
Remove, inspect and service front and rear brakes
Check under body for damage
Wheel alignment (recommended, extra charge)
Regards, Don

The 100,000-kilometre interval D major service is the largest single regular maintenance service that your vehicle will see. It does cover a fair amount of items and fluids when in comparison to the minor A, B or C services, which are mostly just glorified oil changes and inspections only. I would consider $1,500 to be typical at most dealerships. Other than visiting an independent repair facility for a more cost-effective alternative, you have little choice.

Hi Lou,

I have a 2020 Honda Accord sport, six-speed. About every 4-6 weeks when I go to start it, the engine cranks longer than normal before it starts. Like 5-8 seconds versus just a couple seconds or less normally. Highly intermittent problem that I can’t find a common factor for. It always starts first time even when doing the long start. Cranks strongly, not weather dependent as it will do this in summer and winter, dry or rain, first start of the day or semi-warm engine. I haven’t asked Honda about it as the odds it will do it for them if I made an appointment seem low. Any thoughts?

Tom - Guelph, Ont.

I’ve researched several of my professional forums and databases for your model and the terms similar to and including long crank and I am getting zero results. Unfortunately, this means that until a malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) illuminates, you are going to have a hard time getting your complaint to hit home at the dealership. I would normally advise you to record the long crank with your cell phone to help demonstrate it, but with it only acting up every 4-6 weeks this will be difficult to predict.

With a 5-8 second crank and subsequent immediate start, I would automatically assume a fuel-related cause. Somehow the high-pressure fuel required to start the engine is not present and the fuel pump takes 5-8 seconds to replenish and build sufficient fuel pressure. Total guess here, but one of the vehicle’s fuel pumps may be intermittently acting up.

Ok guys. How about Copper air handler and ducting?
Here's another one. Not too old building built around 1929 I believe. Here's a copper air handling unit. Copper. Everything is rivets and copper ANGLE like 1/4" thick to hold it all up.
They don't build 'em like this anymore! I want to be part of the renovations someday.
🤣😂🤣😭😭😭

2023.03.30 19:55 40kDeathGuard New unit ideas just for conversation.

We can expect for GW to come out with units to mimic what many other armies already posses such as dreadnoughts. What other unique unit type ideas do you guys have that would change up the typical Votann gun line army build, and would add some more fun flavor and options?
I'd like to see a SAPPER Unit. A melee based unit with pick axes. They would have a lower strength than the hammers, high AP due to the penetration factor, and maybe 2dmg instead of 3. But the fun factor, they can deepstrike up to 7+ inches from an enemy unit. They pop out of the ground and charge at you with pick axes, Berserk Miners. Maybe put a spot light on one of their helms as an upgrade like the bike searchlights. These would be thematic, but not too ridiculously strong, mostly low defense so a good way to stack up JTs as well.

Hello, I am a fledgling Waaagh enthusiast and I’ve been recently getting into matched play with a few friends of mine. I am kinda shite at building lists, so I’d like a bit of advice on turning my 500pt list into a viable 1000pt list. I hope to have a fairly mechanized list (i.e. no walking units) and I would like to use as many models that I already have as possible. My current list is below.
