2023.03.22 06:43 ab-db Do you think there is "Symmetry" in Mad Men episode structures?

I think that we all like overarching story arc for Mad Men, but one thing that I have come to appreciate over time is how neatly structured individual episodes are. There might be multiple stories but they always seem to be intertwined with a theme, and they are often bookended beautifully. In my latest rewatch I'm up to the episode "The Better Half" (the one where Don and Betty sleep together at Bobby's camp, and Peggy stabs Abe) and I thought it was an interesting example of this kind of symmetry for different stories in the same episode:
It is just a thing that I have noticed and I'm often really surprised at how intricate some episodes can be. The Better Half is not even a special episode in this regard, it was actually just the last one I watched.

2023.03.22 05:55 brennybrennybrenbren Teacher experience of student-lead education models?

Our kids have been in a Reggio-Emilia motivated education model which gives students a great deal of freedom to pursue their interest and... not pursue their non-interests. Little rigor is done for hard subjects like maths, spelling, grammar etc. We have observed that our 10yo is now about 2- 3years beyond the national curriculum for maths and could not do or understand 80% of a sample numeracy NAPLAN test.
My research since has lead me to read about progressive student-lead models (Reggio-Emilia in particular, but there are others) and form a theory that an academic echo-chamber has emerged in which teachers are relegated to "facilitators" and students run the classroom, motivated by ideology rather than hard evidence. We are regularly told that the school "attracts international attention" and "people come from around the world to see how things are done here", and yet, the results seem crap.
By my assessment, false assumptions about the nature of primary school children abound, such as...
That's my impression and we are appalled at the performance of our local school and looking to move. And with 2 years left before high school we have a great deal of extra-curricula work to do to get them ready in time. There is no point asking the school to change as this is an ideological commitment and fundamental to their model.
I also observe anecdotally that the school has a high turnover of teaching staff, and that the later grades seem to have fewer students than the earlier grades.
So I would like to know what teachers who have been in a progressive "student-lead" environment thing. Does it work? Do you feel like you are valued as a teacher? Is my asessment above accurate or not?

2023.03.22 05:08 MinecraftPotion My experience with the AWL remake!

Hi all,
I've been playing Story of Seasons: A Wonderful Life for about a week now, and wanted to share my thoughts on both the remake, and the game as a whole. This post will contain light spoilers, and of course contains my own personal opinions! I am just starting my third year in game.

First of all a small amount of backstory: I've at least tried most of the Harvest Moon games, and have always been a fan of the genre. My first game was Harvest Moon: A Wonderful Life for the Gamecube, and when I was a kid I absolutely adored it! This was at a time where I was too young to really bother looking anything up, and honestly I tend to prefer that anyways. I want my gaming experiences to be as pure as possible, so if I have any interest in a game I won't even watch the trailer for it. So imagine my surprise when I found out that there was a remake of my first Harvest Moon game! When I was a kid, I only ever ended up making it to around year four of the game. I had a pretty short attention-span, and was always looking for the "new" thing. Well now I'm 27, and I really spend a lot more of my time appreciating games. And so far, that's exactly what I've been doing with the AWL remake!

First and foremost, oh my goodness the quality of life improvements are incredible! I remember as a kid watering crops being a bit annoying because of how precise you had to be. But now it's so much easier (almost too easy) as the game will kind of auto-target the next available square. Literally if you have all 54 squares of a plot seeded, you can just mash Y and your character will glide over to the next spot to water the plant. And on the topic of watering crops, or really just tools in general, you can now get upgraded tools! Similar to FoMT, you'll continue to get higher tiers of tools that allow for larger areas of effect. Currently I'm only at a silver watering-can, but since you have so little land to begin with, it only takes a handful of uses to completely water my crops.
The characters I knew and loved from my childhood are mostly here! There are a few name changes, like Celia becoming Cecilia, or Muffy becoming Molly, but more than that there are some character overhauls as well. Cody has become Gordy, which I'm a little sad about the change of because he was one of the more unique looking characters, and has kind of become the typical handsome guy (granted, he's now an available partner option.) Supposedly this has something to do with insensitive racial stereotypes (don't remember where I read that) which is fair. Gustafa has also been changed, and once again, I'm sad about it. His visual isn't bad by any means. Neither is Gordy's really. But these characters that really looked unique have become a bit more generic. And lastly we have Murrey, who has now been renamed to Pui, and instead of being a little homeless guy with flies flying around him, he's more of a forest wanderer. They've given him a flower for a hat, complete with live butterflies! This one I definitely understand, because Murrey's original concept was pretty sad to begin with. The idea that this little homeless guy was wandering around and stealing food is pretty dreadful considering that we're playing an idealistic video-game. Granted, the dark themes are one of my favorite parts of this game!
Overall so far, the remake has done the original justice in my opinion. As far as I'm concerned the quality of life improvements already make this the definitive version of the game to play. However, we now get to my biggest issue, and really the thing that spurred me on to write this post.
A Wonderful Life has always been more of a social game than a farming focused one. The farming in the original took up so little of your time compared to wandering around and interacting with the other townsfolk. And yet, at this point I'm not sure the remake can really save the incredibly repetitive dialogue! Oh my lord, I want so badly to enjoy speaking to the townsfolk, to my wife, to my CHILD. But I'm not exaggerating when I say that my wife's dialogue hasn't really changed at all. Now granted, I married Nami, an arguable mistake in terms of having someone fun to talk to, but that isn't really what it's about. During the Spring? "It's finally getting warmer." During the Summer? "Ugh.. I hate being hot." During the Fall? "We wish we could stop the tree leaves from changing color, but life moves on." And blahblahblah. When I speak to her at our house for over an entire year now? "If you had gone back in time I never would have believed I'd be on the farm" or whatever. Now of course, they say a few more things if you keep speaking to them. But the problem I'm running into is that they're the EXACT, SAME, THINGS. Every single time. It's so demotivating. Why would I want to put in the effort of befriending all of the villagers if there is so little dialogue. Obviously the cutscenes are fun, they're arguably the best part of the entire game. But at this point my day goes like this:
Wake up -> Milk / Feed animals -> Water Crops -> Talk to Nami / Son ...
AND THAT'S ALL. It's 8am. I've reached the point of just running over to the 6hr timeskip option so that I don't have to wait as long to milk my cows again. I'll try to convince myself every day, maybe I should go try to improve my relationships, maybe a cutscene will happen. But it's hard to convince yourself when you know it probably won't happen, and you know they're just going to say the same seasonal thing they always say. It's depressing. When they happen (as an example I recently got another one with Molly where she talks about getting dumped) they're very entertaining, sentimental, and truly make me connect and care for the character. They just don't happen that frequently. I'm not saying that there needs to be more events, I understand that there are actually quite a few to begin with, and over 70 new ones added in the remake! I'm just wishing for more variety, even if it was just three or four more options, it'd help break up the tedium.
Anyways, negativity aside, I'm enjoying the game. But I'm starting to reach the point where I only play it when I'm actively doing something else, like listening to a YouTube video, or whatever. Interested to hear what everyone thinks! Please feel free to share your opinions, I'll read them all. I also understand that if some of the negativity above is a bit ridiculous but I figured I'd share.

2023.03.22 04:44 ____ALPHA___ I asked ChatGPT to make a short romance story in the Dragon Age setting and this is what it came up with... [no spoilers]

The sun had set over the lush forests of the Brecilian Outskirts, casting long shadows over the ancient ruins that lay scattered about the landscape. Leliana, a bard and former member of the Chantry, stood alone on a small hill, watching as the last rays of sunlight disappeared over the horizon. She had been sent by the Inquisition to investigate reports of Darkspawn activity in the area, but so far, she had found nothing.
Just as she was about to give up for the night and head back to camp, she heard a faint rustling in the bushes. Instinctively, she reached for her bow, but then she heard a familiar voice call out from the shadows.
"Leliana, it's me."
She turned around to see Alistair, the Grey Warden she had fought beside years ago during the Fifth Blight. They hadn't seen each other since, and she was surprised to find him here.
"Alistair! What brings you to the Brecilian Outskirts?"
"I could ask you the same thing," he replied with a grin. "I'm on a mission for the Grey Wardens. We heard rumors of Darkspawn activity in the area, so we decided to investigate. And what about you?"
"The Inquisition sent me to look into the same thing. So far, I haven't found anything, though."
They fell into an easy conversation, catching up on everything that had happened since they last saw each other. It was like old times, when they had been fighting side by side against the Archdemon. But there was something different now, something that Leliana couldn't quite put her finger on. Alistair seemed more mature, more confident, more...appealing.
As the night wore on, Leliana found herself drawn to Alistair, his wit and humor charming her. She found herself thinking about him more and more, wondering if there could be something more between them.
It wasn't until they were sitting by a small campfire, their faces illuminated by the flickering flames, that Alistair took her hand and looked deep into her eyes.
"Leliana, I know we've only just reconnected after all these years, but I feel like we have a connection that goes beyond mere friendship. I know we're both busy with our respective missions, but...would you consider seeing me again, when all of this is over?"
Leliana's heart skipped a beat. She had always felt a deep connection to Alistair, but had never been brave enough to act on it. But now, with his hand in hers and his eyes looking at her with such intensity, she knew that she had to take a chance.
"I would like that, Alistair," she said softly.
They shared a kiss by the campfire, a kiss that felt like it had been a long time coming. As they pulled away, they both knew that they had found something special in each other, something worth holding onto in a world filled with darkness and uncertainty.

Nine.
Nine dress-up days in a row y’all.
These teachers at this school woke up and chose violence. This is of course a fun way to lead up to state testing. A way to prepare them! ಠ__ಠ
Every single one sports themed. My kid hates all things sports related so he’s not amused at all. I’m not even sure if we have any sports attire in my entire house.
Fuck whoever thought of this activity. And fuck whoever decided dressing up beyond pajamas, a simple hat, and silly socks would be totes awesome!
45 more days until summer.

2023.03.22 04:18 TeenSummerK Neo Egoist League - What comes next? (Theory)

So I was reading this recent chapter and was thinking about how close it is to the end of NEL, and how it's getting closer to the U20 World Cup. When a thought popped into my mind.
Have they even qualified yet?
Obviously before a team can go to the World Cup, they have to go through the qualifiers to be chosen to participate in the World Cup. It's never been explicitly stated on whether or not Japan has qualified, I mean we have all been under the assumption that they have, since the whole goal of the manga is to win the World Cup and become the best striker in the world. Before that's even possible they need to qualify to participate for the World Cup, and the qualifiers is where a lot of countries fall short.
This raises the question, 'Have Japan even qualified for the U20 yet?'
To this question there are two possible answers, the previous U20 Japan had already qualified the year before for the World Cup, or the new U20 team chosen from these Blue Lockers and previous team will be the one participating in the qualifiers match.
Honestly before I go deeper into this I'm going preface this by saying I am absolutely clueless about football most of my information will be from research online. Also, I'm not sure how realistic this manga may be therefore, take everything I say with a grain of salt.
Going with the theory that the U20 team have not yet qualified for the World Cup, this would realistically be next step after the NEL. Looking at the timeline we were told by Ego just when everyone arrived at Blue Lock back from break there were only 100 days until the U20 World Cup. This is a little over 3 months.
After the NEL ends there will be 38 days out of the original 100 days deadline until the U20 World Cup beings, this calculates to 1 month and 7 days. Let's assume for funsies that the players get a week break, leaving only 1 month left until the U20 World Cup. That begs that the question of what while happen during that month. There could be a month long boot camp, maybe a break, or how about participating in the U20 qualifiers?
I've done some research on the U20 qualifiers and for Japan they are under the East Asian Football Federation (AFF) there is 10 countries that are members. The AFF itself is under the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) who are in charge of the football related tournaments in Asia such as, the AFC U20 World Cup. There are 47 countries that are members of the AFC. Before a country can enter the FIFA U20 World Cup there are 2 tournaments they must compete in and win first.
  1. First is the AFC U20 Championship - Any of 47 countries are able to apply to play in the Championship, they are split into 2 groups based on their subdivision and location. For Japan as they are part of the East, it would be the AFF and ASEAN competing amongst themselves. From this only the top 10 group winners, the 5 best-runner ups and the 6th runner up qualify for the AFC Asian U20 Cup.
  2. Next is the AFC Asian U20 Cup only 16 countries play of those who had qualified from the previous tournament. From the 16 countries they are put into 4 groups, in which only the top 2 from each group enter the knockout rounds into the quarter finals. Only 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th place winners qualify for the FIFA U20 World Cup.
Now with the background laid out, lets assume for the sake of my theory that Japan is part of the 16 countries that qualify for the Asian U20 Cup. With a month and a week after the NEL has finished it's somewhat feasible that Blue Lock could participate in the Asian U20 Cup as it only lasts 18 days. The first 9 days are spent competing against your chosen groups, the last 9 days are the quarter finals. Although the Asian U20 Cup only lasts 18 days it would be useless for the manga to spend time on the first 9 days as it would be incredible boring however, the last 9 days of would be worth interest.
There would only be three matches the mangaka could focus on which would be the quarter-final, semi-final and the finals. These matches would be a perfect way to introduce the World to Japan's new style of football before their debut at the FIFA U20 World Cup. Currently the players are only having a 'taste' of the World which is a very small sample size of only the top 5 European Leagues. Up to this point the players have only ever played on their home turf under Ego's rules and in an environment he has specially created to cultivate their talents. Despite the NEL's efforts to move away from this the players are still in a very controlled environment. As great it is to be playing and training under the top 5 European Leagues with the New Generation XI, when the new team reach the FIFA U20 World Cup they will have to play against over 24 countries with different playstyles, skills, talents, strengths and weakness. The last thing we want is for the Blue Lockers to face a similar disheartening experience like Sae did. A benefit of having the Asian U20 World Cup shown in the manga, it will be the first time that the new U20 group are playing together as a whole, in which we be able to see their chemical reactions, learn about players new positions, and also who the official Japanese striker will be. The devastating consequences of losing the Asian U20 World Cup would ensure for each match to be extremely hyped.
Before the NEL started it was said that Blue Lock is in it's second phase which is the NEL, Ego himself stated the NEL also served as a function for the final selection of the U20 team. It would be reasonable to believe that the Asian U20 Cup could be Blue Lock's final stage before FIFA U20 World Cup.
As Ego stated before how a player performs in a real match compared to a practice match shows you who the player really is and their strength. Simple things such as playing in a different stadium, being a different country, drinking water from a different country could affect how the play. It would be interesting to see the Blue Lockers in a new environment and learning how to adapt to it and the new players. This will also give us as fans an opportunity to meet new characters from the opposing teams mostly likely some of the New Generation XI would be introduced.
If Blue Lock were able to go the Asian U20 World Cup the four countries they would definitely go against based on their records would be South Korea, Myanmar and Thailand. Wouldn't it be awesome to see our egoists win the Championships after Japan has only ever been in the top 4 and has only won once. With a win under their belt the FIFA U20 World Cup would be great, but at the same time a lose would be good too as they would be hungry to win the World Cup and there's nothing better than desperate egoists. The Asian U20 World Cup could bring out so many new scenarios, themes and stories to tell.
Also someone who loves chapter 150 it would be great to see the boys have fun and act like teenagers again in a foreign country and it could bring out new friendships or unexpected pairings.
On a final note, I just think it would be sad for Blue Lock to be so close to end if from the NEL there is a time jump straight to the World Cup. Imagining this manga ending would make me cry so I pray for just a bit more content.
(Let me know what you guys all think and your own theories, I apologise that this was so long and so rant filled. I lost energy towards the end.)

2023.03.22 04:12 dontgiveaderp 32[M4F] Houston, Texas. Hoping to find a relationship. [Relationship]

I'd like to find someone who captivates me. Someone who I can talk with effortlessly. I want to meet a person who I can include in my daily tasks, and talk with throughout the day. I just want to find someone I can be open with. Platonic conversation, friendship or romance. Whatever you are looking for, don't hesitate to message me. I hope to hear from you.
I love a number of things, and hate very little. I'm fairly open to trying new things, but some of the things I enjoy are as follows. I love the outdoors. I've never been camping, but I would like to try it with someone some day. I also love to fish. I mostly fish salt water. I do occasionally fish freshwater though. I like to check out new spots around me, but I mostly fish on the beach. Do you like to fish? What are some of your favorite places to go?
I also enjoy the shooting sports. I primarily target shoot. I take part in a little bit of everything, including rifle, pistol and shotgun. It would be nice to find someone who is into shooting or would like to learn/become more familiar. If you shoot, what do you like to shoot mostly? What's been your favorite gun to shoot so far?
PC games are also a enjoyable pastime for me. I have a variety of games, most of which are on Steam. I have other games on various other stores/services. I enjoy a wide variety of different kind of games, so I'm sure we can find something to play together if you game. What are some of your all time favorite games? What are you currently grinding on that you can't put down? One hobby I discovered later on in life is Magic the Gathering. I probably would never have found MtG, if it were not for my best friend. I play both online on MtG Arena, and with physical cards. Magic has become something I am particularly fond of. Do you play any kind of card/table top games? What's been your favorite so far? If you play Magic, what are some of your favorite deck themes?
Music has always been a part of my life. My tastes are varied, ranging from country, death and black metal, electronic, classic rock, folk, pop punk, and more. Do you have a favorite band? What has been your favorite concert you've been to?
I'm honestly an ambivert. I enjoy doing things outside, as well as spending time indoors. I can veg out all day under the covers curled up in my bed, or I can take a trip somewhere and experience something new. I think my personality is a mix of the best of both worlds. What would the perfect day consist of for you?
As far as my personality is concerned, I would say I am fairly relaxed and laid back. I feel like I am somewhere in the middle between loud and excitable, and shy and quiet. Around people I don't know, I tend to be fairly quiet and to myself. In the company of someone who I am close with, I am more open and free. Do you open right up to people, or does it take a while to become comfortable with someone new?
All I hope for is a connection. It could be platonic, or it could blossom into romance, and commitment. I'm not putting a limit on what I am looking for.
With the prior being said, I am single. I may be interested in changing that with the right person. The idea of commitment excites me. Monogamy is appealing to me. Do you feel satisfied with your social life? What kind of connection are you looking for?
Thank you for taking the time to read my post. I appreciate it. I hope you can identify with something I wrote. If you do, please reach out.
P.S. Please feel free to check my post history, and check out a few pictures of my cat if you would like.

2023.03.22 04:12 dontgiveaderp 32[M4F] Houston, Texas. Hoping to find a relationship.

2023.03.22 04:12 ElHanko Making a very short video for Wednesday morning and would like your help

Hi! Are you the type of person up between 4 am and 6 am on Wednesdays? Do you want to be in a minute training video? I’m doing some refresher videography training, so I have to present about one minute of video sequences (can be spoken or unspoken) with a beginning, middle, and end. I would like to have an early morning/dawn theme, preferably an outdoor activity (like someone preparing for a morning run) but happy to do an indoor activity too (ie making eggs if you can afford them). While I like the morning theme, the activity can be just about anything that’s not illegal or sexual. In any case, let me know if you’re interested in being the subject of this tiny little film. If you are, I’m happy to give you the completed footage for your private use after. Thank you!

2023.03.22 03:56 rpaccount233 M4F War. War never changes.

Hello! I hope whoever is reading this is having a great day:) As you have guessed, I’m looking for a partner for a Fallout themed story that we can create:)
I have played all Bethesda’s Fallouts and I’m currently trying to get into Fallout 1 and 2. I consider myself fairly knowledgeable about the lore of fallout, so we can have our story take place either in the setting of any games or we could create an completely original location that was never shown in any games.
Here’s a little about me. I’m a 21 M in EST time zone and I’m most active around midnight. I write from a few lines to a few paragraphs depending on the story. I hope I can find a partner that 18+ and can be fairly active. Discord is must since I don’t check my reddit often. Please let me know if you are going to be away or lost interest. Just please don’t ghost.
And that’s about it, hope to hear from you soon:)

2023.03.22 03:53 vosty Member of global K-Pop sensation "Twice" publicly wears a t-shirt with a swastika on it, days after performing while wearing a Q-Anon shirt. Reddit's K-Pop community reacts.

For those who don't know, Twice is one of the biggest K-Pop groups in the world, and they're hot off their new single which they hope will help them establish themselves in the west. They're also about to start a highly anticipated world tour, including the USA and Europe.
Enter Chaeyoung, one of the youngest members who just yesterday caught some minor flack for performing using a Q-Anon t-shirt. Since this was a performance, many blamed their stylist for the mishap.
But then not even a full day later, Chaeyoung uploads pictures of her strolling around NYC (meaning she wore her own clothes) wearing a T-Shirt depicting Sid Vicious of the Sex Pistols with a swastika on it. The k-pop world goes into turmoil.
/twice
As a korean, it is really hard to distinguish the pattern for buddhism or nazi’s
I'm glad Chaeyoung took the time to acknowledge this and apologise for her mistake but for me and other Jewish fans, this runs way deeper.
Glad she addressed it. Now we can move on and for those who are getting tickets tomorrow all the best to you guys
/kpop
I'm genuinely surprised nobody in New York City checked her on it to be honest.
Is the holocaust not taught at schools anymore?
/kpopthoughts
Do I think she is a Nazi? Well, no. Extremely ignorant? Well, yes
I've seen some people using "it's punk!" as an excuse but it really isn't.
As someone active in the punk and hardcore scene in my area, this does not line up with the ideals of a majority of us.
/kpoprants
I am so tired of this Orientalist defense that Asian people basically live in fucking caves and don't have 5G Internet
Many other random dramas all across the board, including who gets to be offended by nazis, "are the Sex Pistols punk?", or the true meaning of the word "swastika"
