2023.03.30 19:29 ronthorns Help with a sidequest

Need help with a murder mystery who-dunnit side quest.
Party arrives in a village, the most normal village in the world.
On arrival the party finds the sherif in the town square, standing over the dead body of the town baker.
He enlists your party to solve the murder and they start interviewing the town.
However the first person they talk to is revealed to be 3 kobolds in a trench coat pretending to be the blacksmith.
In fact everyone in the town is 3 kobolds in a trench coat, but they all think they're the only ones, and they think everyone else is human.
The murderer is going to be a shapeshifter who is pretending to be 3 kobolds in a trench coat to fit in. He's aware everyone else is 3 kobolds, but also knew the baker was human, and he killed her to keep his cover.
What I need help with, is dialouge for the townspeople for the interviews, and I need to flesh out why the human baker was the only human in town, and if she knew anything about what was going on around her.
Any help would be appreciated

2023.03.30 19:15 dustoff87 Evil Campaign - reclaiming a town

Hello, starting an evil campaign soon, and map/plot wise it makes sense that the first main mission the PCs are sent on is to reclaim a town from a Paladin and expeditionary force that has recently "liberated" it.
The town lived under oppressive rule of an evil wizard, the Paladin has led a force to free them, and now the party is here to kick them out and set up new management.
My question is how do I make these fights more interesting? Is there a way I can string together a number of city fights, keep them fresh, and more than just fight some humanoids in a street, now fight some more?
Any suggestions on evil side quests would be welcomed as well!

2023.03.30 19:12 ll--o--ll Does batting or bowling win the IPL? Cricbuzz

Does batting or bowling win the IPL? Cricbuzz
There is a statement that has acquired cult status, especially on the T20 circuit, over the years: 'Batters win you matches. Bowlers win you tournaments.' But how true is this? In the first 15 seasons of the IPL, we have seen franchises build teams with a balance weighing towards one side or the other depending on a multitude of factors such as their home venue, style of captaincy and resource availability.
As the 16th edition looms on the horizon, it is a good time to revisit the data from the past and see if the statement is just a subjective conclusion that has led to a sweeping generalization, or whether it actually holds water. A deep look at the numbers shows whether one discipline is actually more important than the other, but also reveals the most complete championship[1]winning side thus far, who was the standout franchise over the first 15 years, and how to succeed at a batting-friendly venue like the Chinnaswamy.
Methodology
In T20 cricket, every team has two resources at their disposal - balls and wickets. The batting side attempts to optimize the first resource by scoring as many runs off every ball delivered. The bowling side tries to concede as few runs as possible for every ball bowled and knows that an important way to do this is to reduce the wicket reserves of the batting team. The two key metrics here are runs scored per ball, and balls taken per dismissal. In more popular parlance, this is run rate and balls per dismissal for the batting team, and economy rate and strike rate for the bowling team.
A batting impact score is therefore derived by combining the run rate and balls per dismissal (RR x BpD/100), and similarly the formula for bowling impact score is the combination of economy rate and strike rate (ER x S100). To figure out a team's total impact score for a season, we compare their batting and bowling impact scores with the average of the other teams in the tournament.
For example, Rajasthan Royals in IPL 2022 scored 8.72 runs per over and lost a wicket every 20.88 balls, whereas the other nine teams cumulatively scored at 8.52 and lost a wicket every 18.57 deliveries. This gives the Royals a batting impact score of 1.82 (8.72 x 20.88 divided by 100 = 1.82) compared to the tournament average of 1.58, meaning their net batting impact score was +0.24.
Likewise, they conceded at 8.51 per over and took a wicket every 19.19 balls in comparison to 8.54 and 18.76 by the other teams. This works out to a bowling impact score of 1.63 for the Royals, while the remaining nine sides managed 1.60. The net bowling value for the Royals is therefore -0.03, and their total impact score for IPL 2022 is +0.21 (+0.24 - 0.03).

'Batters win you matches and bowlers win you tournaments.' But do they?

Let's start by looking at the broader trend.
There are 126 instances of teams featuring across the 15 editions of IPL (Mumbai Indians for IPL 2008 is considered one instance, while their appearance in 2009 is considered another). Among those 126 instances, there have been 39 occasions that teams have finished with both batting and bowling impact scores in the green. The average final ranking for these sides is 2.7, which falls within the playoff qualification bracket (the top four sides qualify for the knockouts in IPL). In 27 instances teams have finished with a positive batting impact score and negative bowling impact score, and these sides on average have a ranking of 5.1.
On the other hand, of the 25 times teams finished with a negative batting impact score and positive bowling impact score, they had a marginal improvement in average ranking to 4.8. From the data analyzed above, it is safe to conclude that going bowling heavy at the expense of batting will not pay dividends and the sides that have done the best are the one that found the right balance, even if it is slightly tilted towards the bowling. If we look at individual cases, the above adage was perhaps put to its sternest test in 2018.
In general, across all T20 cricket, 2018 was the best batting year and the story was no different in IPL with scoring rates peaking at 8.65. CSK were the best batting team of the tournament with a batting impact score of +0.59, well ahead of the next placed Delhi Capitals (+0.24), while SRH was one of the two teams that ended with a positive bowling impact score. SRH successfully defended totals of under 150 thrice in the season and regularly restricted oppositions to par totals or below.
The two sides faced off against each other four times with CSK coming out on top on every occasion, including the final where they upstaged SRH's bowling by chasing 179 to win by eight wickets. In 13 matches against teams other than CSK that season, SRH went at 7.92 and picked a wicket every 17.18 balls, but they came undone against CSK with the same parameters reading 8.91 and 30.67 respectively from four exchanges.
CSK's batting impact score of +0.59 in 2018 was the best among all the teams that won IPL and they were one of only two trophy[1]winning sides to register a negative bowling impact score (MI in 2015 being the only other side). In this case, batting trumped bowling.

SRH bowling vs CSK batting in 2018
https://preview.redd.it/c1gwwan8qwqa1.png?width=435&format=png&auto=webp&s=aea535112981c1ad38bcffd256c17770e1522b05
Another instance of this hypothesis being put through the acid test was in the 2015 final. This was the only instance of a final being played between a team with a positive bowling impact score and a negative batting impact score, and an opponent with scores the other way around. CSK, the league toppers, finished with impact scores of -0.04 and +0.27 in batting and bowling respectively.
Their opponents in the final - MI - were the best batting unit of the season with an impact score of +0.35, double the next best, while in bowling their score was -0.11. MI were 0.39 points ahead of CSK in batting and 0.38 points behind CSK in bowling making it the most batting vs bowling heavy sides in terms of impact scores facing each other in a summit clash. MI made 202/5 batting first and got the better of CSK, restricting them to 161 to make it 3-1 in head-to-head clashes in the season. So once again we saw batting strength getting the better of bowling strength.

The bowling heavy sides that went all the way

If the above suggests that it is batting that clinches trophies, let's look at some bowling teams that went all the way. In 2019, CSK were a hit away from clinching the title. The IPL returned to Chennai for a full season for the first time in a while and the tracks on offer at Chepauk slowed down significantly as the match progressed, which meant spin was the order of the day.
CSK realized this early and were aided in their pursuit by the fact they won six tosses out of eight home games. Luck factor aside, CSK on average bowled 15 balls of spin every innings more than their visitors, which proved to be the clincher. Imran Tahir was the Purple Cap winner that year with 26 scalps, while Harbhajan Singh and Ravindra Jadeja played the supporting cast to perfection. Deepak Chahar and Dwayne Bravo capped off the attack, owning either ends of the innings.
Each of CSK's top four leading wicket takers picked 15+ wickets at economy rates under 7.50 per over, covering up for what was one of CSK's weakest seasons with the bat. Two bowling dominant sides that went on to lift the silverware are Rajasthan Royals in the inaugural IPL and Kolkata Knight Riders in 2012, both with a bowling impact score of +0.28. Royals in 2008 had three of the four highest wicket takers (Sohail Tanvir, Shane Warne & Shane Watson) of the season, and a strong bowling attack was the backbone of their success at their bowling-friendly home in Jaipur, where they did not lose a single game.
The story was similar for KKR in 2012, where Sunil Narine led the attack with 24 wickets at an economy rate of 5.48 and was backed up by bowlers who made full use of the Eden Gardens track. No other championship-winning side has had their total impact score significantly boosted by bowling impact like KKR in 2012 (bowling impact score of +0.25 to batting impact score of +0.03). SRH in 2016 is another title-winning team whose balance was more skewed to their bowling unit.
They remain an anomaly as the only champions who had a negative batting impact score (-0.06), despite a cracking season from their skipper David Warner who hit 848 runs. Bhuvneshwar was the Purple Cap winner with 23 wickets and formed a formidable pairing with Mustafizur Rahman, who finished with 17 wickets and played big hand for them throughout the season.

Team with best bowling impact scores

The most complete championship-winning side

It would be little surprise to anyone who has followed IPL diligently to hear which was the most rounded side that ever lifted the silverware. No other side dominated an IPL season as much as Mumbai Indians did in the 2020 edition.
They lost just five games in the season, two via Super Over and one when they rested most of their first choice players, underscoring their dominance. SRH in 2017 aside (more on them later), MI in 2020 is the only team that finished with a batting impact score above +0.50 and a bowling impact score above +0.25.
They had a strong batting order with three of their top four batters (Quinton de Kock, Ishan Kishan & Suryakumar Yadav) aggregating 480+ runs at 140+ strike rate, while both Kieron Pollard and Hardik Pandya provided the finishing touch to the innings striking at 175+. MI scored at 9.09 per over and lost a wicket every 24.41 balls - RCB in 2016 is the only other instance of a team managing the double of 9+ run rate and 22+ balls per dismissal.
Despite the obvious chinks in the bowling attack - like the lack of a genuine second overseas seamer and Hardik's inability to bowl - Jasprit Bumrah (27 wickets, SR 13.33) and Trent Boult (25 wickets, SR 13.76) controlled either half of the innings, which ensured that their bowling towered above the rest. MI on average were +1.15 runs ahead every over of the opposition (run rate of 9.09 and economy rate of 7.94), which was the best a team managed in a season.

The GOAT

Chennai Super Kings, with an average impact score of +0.41 across the 13 editions in which they competed, is the standout IPL side in the first 15 years of the competition's journey. CSK registered a positive impact score in 12 of the 13 seasons they featured in, missing out only in IPL 2022 - which also happens to be the only time both their batting and bowling impact scores were in negative territory Among the sides which have featured in at least three editions SRH is a territory. Among the sides which have featured in at least three editions, SRH is a distant second with an average impact score of +0.14, while MI is the only other side to register a net average impact score in positive territory (+0.09).
Of the top ten entries on total impact score across the 15 editions, CSK occupy as many as five of them, with three of those culminating in title wins (2011, 2018 & 2021). In all three title-winning seasons, they managed a +0.50 batting impact score while their bowling impact score in all of these seasons was below +0.10, underscoring how batting-dominant CSK have been in their successful years. CSK teams are renowned for having deep batting lineups and they often rely on skipper MS Dhoni's tactical acumen to ensure the bowling unit's output is greater than the sum of its parts.
The only exception to this trend was their maiden title win in 2010 where they achieved their lowest batting impact score (+0.25) and highest bowling impact score (+0.11) of their four title-winning seasons. They were staring at an early exit midway through the tournament with just two wins from seven matches but regrouped well in the second half to win five matches, four of them at their bastion at Chepauk, to stage a comeback that culminated in the double of IPL and CLT20 trophies.

Title winning teams with impact scores

Cracking the Chinnaswamy code
A common denominator for every T20 dynasty is the dominance at their home ground and a team built around the characteristics of it - for example the fast bouncy wickets at Perth for the Scorchers, or the Chepauk turner for Chennai Super Kings. The Chinnaswamy Stadium typically presents a flat wicket combined with short boundaries, negating the home team's ability to assemble a squad tailored to the venue and leaving them little home advantage.
Yet RCB seemed to crack the code when they realized it is futile to plan to defend runs, and a far better strategy to go hunting for wickets. The 2015 RCB bowling attack did this to perfection when four of their highest wicket takers (Yuzvendra Chahal, Mitchell Starc, Harshal Patel & David Wiese - all with 15+ wickets each) combined to take 76 wickets between them at a rate of one every 13.9 balls. RCB's strike rate of 15.10 in that season is the best any side had managed in a season and the blueprint was set.
In the following year, they followed the same strategy with changes in personnel around Chahal. Chahal broke the door to national team selection with a 21-wicket season (SR 14.05) and was assisted by Shane Watson (20 wickets, SR 16.95), Chris Jordan (11 wickets, SR 15.27) and Sreenath Aravind (11 wickets, SR 15.91). As mentioned below, they failed to grab the clutch moments in the final and fell at the last hurdle for the third time.
The Chinnaswamy wicket was re-laid in 2017 but RCB veered away from this approach in the following years, failing to qualify for the Play Offs for three consecutive seasons between 2017 and 2019. They haven't played at the venue in the post-Covid era, a phase in which they have leaned towards a strong bowling lineup - unlike the sides of the past which were heavily loaded towards batting. RCB did find some success with their new approach, making the Play Offs for three successive years since 2020. How RCB's fortunes will pan out as they return to their home at Chinnaswamy will be one of the stories to watch out for in the 2023 IPL.

The outliers

In the 126 instances of teams featuring in the IPL so far, only one team has managed a total impact score of over one point. To the surprise of many, the team in picture is SunRisers Hyderabad in 2017, who finished third in the league phase, winning eight of the 13 completed games. SRH lost a wicket every 26.32 balls, which happens to be the second best a team ever managed in a season(marginally behind Chennai Super Kings' 26.63 in 2014).
Bowling strike rate wise, their 16.36 deliveries per wicket was only bettered on two other instances, giving them a positive difference of almost ten balls for every wicket lost and every wicket taken - the highest any team has ever achieved in a season. SRH in 2017 had five batters aggregating over 200 runs, four of them averaging over 28 balls per dismissal, while four of them scored those runs at a 135+ strike rate.
David Warner won the Orange Cap for his 641 runs (SR 142, BpD 41) followed by Shikhar Dhawan (479 runs, SR 127, BpD 29), Moises Henriques (277 runs, SR 136, BpD 34), Kane Williamson (256 runs, SR 151, BpD 28) and Yuvraj Singh (252 runs, SR 142, BpD 20). SunRisers' run rate of 8.64 was the highest they ever managed in an IPL season, further underlining how good a season they had batting wise - in a phase where SRH were renowned for their bowling-heavy strategy under Tom Moody.
Bhuvneshwar Kumar led the bowling charts, winning Purple Cap for the second year running with an eye popping strike rate of 12 balls every wicket. A teenaged Rashid Khan made giant strides in his debut IPL season with 17 scalps at an economy of 6.63, followed by Siddarth Kaul and Mohammed Siraj, who bagged 16 and 10 scalps at strike rates of 13.4 and 13.8 respectively.
In a tournament where they dominated with both bat and ball, SRH were unlucky not to go further as they crashed out in the Eliminator to KKR at the Chinnaswamy Stadium. The tracks at Chinnaswamy were re-laid before the season which made it play contrary to its usual self, making batting a mean job. Adding to SRH's misfortune, the chase was cut short when rain reduced the game to a five-over shootout, leaving them little chance of a comeback.

The only other instance a team came close to match SunRisers' feat was RCB in IPL 2016, where they finished with a net impact score of +0.96. They assembled what could arguably be the finest batting lineup the IPL has ever witnessed - Virat Kohli, AB de Villiers, Chris Gayle, Shane Watson, and KL Rahul making up their top five. Kohli's magnum opus of 973 runs in a single edition in 2016 remains unmatched, and he was ably supported by AB de Villiers (687 runs, Avg 52.85, SR 169) and KL Rahul in what was his breakout season (397 runs, Avg 44.11, SR 146). RCB's scoring of 9.63 in 2016 is the best any team has managed in an IPL season thus far, and they did so losing a wicket only every 26.17 balls, giving them a batting impact score of 0.92 - the highest any team achieved in a season.
Gayle and Watson did not have particularly fruitful tournaments with the bat, but Watson more than made it up for that with his best season with the ball, accounting for 20 wickets. Like SRH in 2017, RCB was also unlucky not to end their title drought in 2016 as they failed to latch on to the key moments on the night that mattered. From a winning position, their inform middle order choked under pressure in the back half of the run chase to end eight runs short.

The unlucky ones

Of the top 25 teams on total impact score, the only side that failed to make it past the league phase is the RCB side of 2013. They finished with a total impact score of +0.60, while no other side that finished outside the top four could even get to +0.30. RCB in 2013 also remain the only side across 15 seasons that failed to finish in the top four despite winning more than half of their league games (nine wins and seven defeats from 16 league games).
MI in 2008 is another side that was unfortunate to miss the knockouts despite a total impact score of +0.28. They started off in the worst possible manner, losing four games on the trot, their original captain injured and their stand-in captain suspended. They staged a remarkable comeback to win their next six games before falling agonizingly short in the final over in their following three games.

Recap of 2022

Finishing Position: 7th
Played: 14, Won: 6, Lost: 8
It is not often that you say, "Kolkata Knight Riders had a pedestrain season." Over the years, they've been one of the most consistent teams in the league. In the 8 years before 2022, they made the playoffs five times and were thrice left stranded 5th on the table: twice due to net run rate, once due to a washed out game. Their last year, however, was quite unremarkable.
Some might say it started way before the cricket began. KKR used almost half their purse to retain 4 players they might have got collectively for cheaper in the mega auctions. Then they spent another 23 crores to get Rana, Mavi and Cummins back. And despite having a familiar core at their disposal, they kept on chopping and changing in a bid to find the right combination.
Ultimately, they finished 7th. The positives to be taken from the season were Umesh Yadav's new ball exploits and the fact that Andre Russell played all 14 matches contributing with both bat and ball. (300 runs and 17 wickets).
Top Run Getter Shreyas Iyer 401 runs
Top Wicket Taker Andre Russell 17 wickets

Preface to 2023

  • Talk of the Town
A new coach, an injured captain and decisions at and before the auctions that left the fans scratching their heads. The level of optimism in the ever hopeful and utterly loyal fanbase of KKR isn't at its usual high. In their heart of hearts though, the KKR fanatics would still be sanguine about their team's chances. They'd be telling themselves to have faith in the 6-time Ranji Trophy winning coach's plans. Or perhaps in the good fortune that the memes claim Lord Shardul and Rinku Singh bring.
Shreyas Iyer's injury is indubitably a big set back. Apart from being the skipper, he was their only batter to cross the 400-run mark last year. In his absence, Nitish Rana - who captained Delhi in the SMAT 2022/23 - has been handed the captaincy. KKR fans would hope he can take them back to the golden days when another southpaw from Delhi lead them to glory. Even back then, it was about every player punching above their weight. If they want to be triumphant, this year would be no different.

  • Jersey/Kit for the season
Kolkata Knight Riders have not made any major noticeable changes to their jersey from last year.

KKR's Jersey for IPL 2023

Stand in skipper Nitish Rana in the playing jersey during a press conference. Coach Chandrakant Pandit sports the training jersey.

  • Fixtures
KKR's first match of the season is at Mohali against PBKS on Saturday, April 1st. They play GT, PBKS, CSK, RCB and SRH twice. Their only matches against DC and MI are away games while LSG and RR will visit the Eden Garden to play their only games against the Knight Riders.

IPL 2023 schedule for Kolkata Knight Riders

  • Expected Conditions at Home Ground
It is after four long years, fans at Eden Gardens would see their home team play. The ground did host a couple of playoff matches last year, but unfortunately KKR couldn't make it. The pitch here in recent times has generally been a batting paradise. Scores of 185+ were scored in all four IPL innings played here last year. The last IPL game that was played here before that - back in 2019 - saw KKR post a mammoth 232/2 in 20 overs. So expect a batting wicket which might yield a little bit for the spinners as it wears and tears through the season.

Team for IPL 2023

  • Updates regarding injuries/unavailabilities

Player Likely Period of Absence Reason Replacements Announced
Shreyas Iyer At least half the season Back Injury None
Litton Das Upto six matches Bangladesh play a Test match next week and in May tour Ireland for ODIs; Das is still to get an NOC from BCB None
Shakib Al Hasan Unknown Bangladesh play a Test match next week and in May tour Ireland for ODIs; Shakib is likely to miss those but he'll need an NOC from BCB None
Note: Replacements can only be announced for players who will be missing the entire season.

  • Updated Squad
Shreyas Iyer (captain), Nitish Rana (interim captain), Andre Russell✈️, Sunil Narine✈️, Shardul Thakur, Lockie Ferguson✈️, Umesh Yadav, Tim Southee✈️, Shakib Al Hasan✈️, Mandeep Singh, Litton Das✈️, Kulwant Khejroliya, David Wiese✈️, Suyash Sharma, Vaibhav Arora, Narayan Jagadeesan, Rahmanullah Gurbaz✈️, Venkatesh Iyer, Harshit Rana, Varun Chakravarthy, Anukul Roy, Rinku Singh.

Likely First Choice XI 1. Venky Iyer 2. Litton Das✈️ (wk) 3. Shreyas Iyer 4. Nitish Rana 5. Rinku Singh 6. Andre Russell✈️ 7. Shardul Thakur 8. Sunil Narine✈️ 9. Umesh Yadav 10. Lockie Ferguson✈️ 11. Varun Chakravarthy IP Options: Mandeep Singh, Narayan Jagdeeshan , Suyash Sharma (Note: Impact player cannot be an overseas player if there are already 4 overseas players in the playing XI)

  • Major Strengths
(i) Spin Sphinxes: Mystery Spin has been a salient feature of the Kolkata Knight Riders line up for a decade. While Narine has been their ace, in Varun Chakravarthy he has found a partner in crime. The word is that Suyash Sharma - the 19 year old with zero domestic experience who KKR roped in at the auctions this year - is another mystery spinner. So if it turns a bit at the Eden Gardens this year, expect this trio to be a menace for the oppositions.
(ii) A Steady Core: A major chunk of players who form their first XI have been with KKR for quite long now. Hence, they're expected to not only be versed with how things at the franchise work but also have clarity regarding what is expected of them. While Narine and Russell have always been the fulcrum of the team, Nitish Rana, Venkatesh Iyer and Rinku Singh have had good runs in the SMAT this year. These players along with Lockie, Umesh and Shardul will form the core of the team.
(iii) Fast Bowling Resources: It is a little surprising that there hasn't been much chatter about how good KKR's pace attack looks this year. Umesh and Southee were consistent in making inroads with the new ball last year. This season they'd be supported by the pace of Lockie Ferguson and Shardul Thakur's golden knack of breaking partnerships. David Wiese is another tall pace bowling option, wheras many would remember Vaibhav Arora's swing from the game last year where CSK were 5 down for 36. Delhi lads Harshit Rana and left armed Khejroliya are other options.

  • Weaknesses
(i) Missing Pieces: Litton Das' whirlwind knock of 83(41) yesterday has reassured that he was a good pick and is likely to be KKR's first choice opener. However, Bangladesh are to play a Test match against Ireland next week and as of now, there is no confirmation about whether the BCB would allow him to miss that to play the IPL or not. Then, Bangladesh are touring Ireland for an ODI series in May. If NOCs aren't issued, Das could miss 6 KKR matches. Shakib Al Hasan is another player in the same boat. And by now the hole created by Shreyas' absence is the talk of the town. KKR will have to find a way to negate the effects of this absenteeism.
(ii) Backups looking thin: With everyone available, KKR form a formidable T20 first XI on paper. However, it's the backups that appear thin with regards to their IPL records. Kolkata would hope that guys like Jagdeeshan, Mandeep and Rinku can translate their domestic forms to IPL success, while wicketkeeper Gurbaz and allrounder Wiese can prove with their performance why they are worthy of an overseas player's slot in the IPL.

Game Plan: Possible Punts

  • An Overseas Impact Player
With absenteeism plaguing the team, KKR's starting XI is bound to look different from their first choice XI. While the bowling looks fine, it is the top order that would require a makeover. While you expect Russell, Narine and one of either Ferguson or Southee to be automatic picks, Rahmanullah Gurbaz could come in as the fourth overseas player. He is a free stroking batter who loves to take the bowling on in the powerplay. If Gurbaz fails in the first few games, Litton could directly replace him in the XI when the latter is available.
Another option would be to go with an all India Top order giving both Jagdeeshan and Mandeep a run in the side. This could mean that the Knight Riders start with just 3 foreigners and bring in the 4th as an impact player. When batting first, they could bring in David Wiese for a batter who's already played his part. Wiese is a capable lower order hitter, plus provides an extra bowling option. This way you use both his skillsets without compromising on anything else. Similarly, Gurbaz could become an option to elongate the batting line up during a steep chase.

  • Sticking to a certain batting order
Venkatesh Iyer has mostly opened the innings when playing for KKR. For his state team Madhya Pradesh, he was batting at 4 this SMAT. In the 9 T20Is he played for India, he was a finisher. Stand in skipper Rana as well as Narine have now virtually batted at every spot in that KKR lineup. While it's good to have flexibility, sometimes too much shuffling around can hamper clarity of roles and the confidence of a player. Something the KKR management was somewhat guilty of last season. Their batting resources have undoubtedly taken a hit. But, in order to get the best out of what they have, it'd be important to show faith in the men they picked giving them manifest roles and decent ropes.

  • Punching above their weight
When you zoom in to the Indian contingent of the squad, you find that - barring the injured captain and Shardul Thakur - there are hardly any players who are even being discussed in the India white ball setup. That, in many ways, indicates why the team looks a little underwhelming on paper. The other way to look at it is that this is a pack which should rather be more hungry and hence, more dangerous. If they're looking for inspiration, KKR's own history will tell you that you don't exactly need prima-donnas to be victorious. If you can find hungry enough Uthappas, Chawlas, Pandeys and Bhatias, you can become a force to reckon with. And when you're not even in the calculations of the national team, as an individual the upside to a good IPL season is that much more. Having said that, for KKR to have a glorious season, it's Indian players will have to punch above their weight.

KKR fans, what do you think of your team's chances this year? Feel free to comment your thoughts. Stay tuned for part 9: Lucknow Super Giants

The land in this area is underlain by a layer of limestone, eroded and dissolved by rainwater and groundwater to form caverns, holes, and tunnels. This type of terrain is called "karst" and results in many geological features such as wet sinkholes, depressions, natural bridges and a disappearing stream. The hikers can either hike the 3.6-mile Sinkhole Trail to view the numerous sinkholes and geological features, or the 2.8-mile Gum Swamp Trail around a cypress and gum swamp. We recommend wear hiking shoes and bring a water bottle, and consider bug spray or long pants/sleeves. 10am

2023.03.30 18:56 FarmWhich4275 When Humans Human

(one of my earliest attempts at writing. decided to just finish and post it. apologies.)

Entry Log One: Khrakhan Eld, Jukhanian Ambassador to the Human Alliance. Stardate - Human Year 2086.

It has been over three centuries since I accepted this commission to work with the Human Alliance, and even though I have known them for that long, they still surprise me to a shocking extent. A highly diverse species with so many different cultures congealed into one staggering mass of a hundred billion strong, settled alongside all the galaxy's different species.
Humanity was, and still remains, the driving force behind the rapidly growing Federations power and might. The strange, gaunt, high gravity race of bipedal apes took the galaxy by complete surprise, not only due to their appearance, but also due to their surprising strength.

In barely forty years of their time here, they have integrated seamlessly with species previously thought inhospitable. Planets thought harsh or unuseable, supported massive colonies of millions of humans, and the richness the industries these worlds provide. Humans, as it later turned out, had an affinity for members of other species, and by staggering luck they had a one-in-a-billion reproductive system that was robust enough that they could actually interbreed with most mammalian species in the galaxy, and one or two of the reptillians as well.

Humanity's capabilities in terms of engineering surpassed ours in a matter of decades, and due to the terms of the Federation, they shared it with us. This is primarily due to the tribal nature of the race, and they are well known for their petty squabbles and minor disputes, that result in skirmishes or outright wars, but would never come to full scale attacks. Maybe a warning shot or two, a small exchange of fire to disable shield arrays, but never more than that.
When questioned about these incidents, Human ambassadors and leaders would simply say something on the lines of:
"Meh. Local tensions. Pirates. Idiots. God botherers or Idealists that randomly decide to slug it out one day. Just ignore them, they run out of steam eventually and bugger off back to where they came from."

We really cared not. Owing to how the humans never turned their guns on us, we were fine with it, so long as they never got us involved. Everything about the humans confused and amazed us. They had, during First Contact Exchanges, given us reels upon reels of their historical archives. And what we had now was essentially a marginally watered down version of what humanity once was.

Hardened like a battleship hull.

***************************************************************************
Entry Log Two: Human Expansion

Owing to their ability to breed with a majority of the species in the galaxy, Human society, cultures and customs became part and parcel of the Federations species, almost to the point where we started getting cults forming in small pockets on the outer rims worshipping this aspect. Humanity, surprisingly enough, even though they technically were the deity being worshipped by these cults, were the first ones to clamp down on them, disbanding or outright attacking them.

Humans retained a lot of their individual national cultures long after their arrival into space. Many of their soldiers still carried blades, swords, knives and other such primitive weapons, weapons that most members of the galactic species considered worthless, or obsolete. But humans wielded these weapons to devastating effect, as witnessed in a few incidents and military conflicts seen during their short time in the Federation.

Technological advancement in terms of military and civilian development outstretched the rest of the galaxy by - to quote an expression - "a Country Mile." Human creativity and the natural drive for both an Omnivorous species' capacity for greed, and the species natural curiosity drove them to accomplish tasks and tech we never would have imagined. Humans and their concept of "Percussive Maintenance", or smack it 'til it worked was also something that took us by surprise. Especially considering that most of the time it actually worked.

For a few decades, a long time in human years apparently, we simply took it at face value, and never questioned it. As the expression goes: "Never look a gift horse in the mouth."

***************************************************************************
Entry Log Three: Capacity for Evil

They were not complete angels and paragons of course, Many a time, more than other races especially during the early years, they were extremely aggressive in their colonization efforts, going to active war with many nations over territorial disputes, corporate conflicts or other such disputes. Either they would win by a bare margin, or they would be routed and sent off in pieces.

One such occasion was the Tabrisko Incident, where, from what I could discern, was a human Corporation, a private entity separate from the Alliance and the Federation, known as Cybratech Industries, had laid claim to a particular star system. A star system, already settled by its current inhabitants the Hasaki Triumvirate. It was here that humanity showed its capacity for callous greed, and why so much emphasis is placed in society on the rejection of Corporate ideals. It also showed us a modicum mof respectability. When someone was being a dick... they had no trouble fucking them.

The Corporation, or simply 'Corpos' gathered a fleet of about forty ships, two of them cruisers and one Ark ship. They proceeded, without orders to bypass most security legislation, bribing their way across the galaxy and arrived in the system of Tabrisko. Two terrestrial planets, one Oceanic planet in the habitable zone, one Gas giant, two Ice planets and one newborn Molten planet. An unremarkable system by all accounts, there were thousands just like it throughout the galaxy.

The Corpos warped in and sent out a mass broadcast. "This is a public declaration. On behalf of the CybraTech Corporation, your occupation of this star system is now null and void. You will evacuate from the area immediately. You have a standard week to respond."

The sheer bastarding balls of them. A human representative was contacted and informed of the situation.

The human Ambassador, a gaunt, tall white haired gent by the name of Harley Alride, had a sneaky, unmistakable grin on his face as he spoke to the ambassador from the Hasaki Triumvirate. "So... what exactly is the issue here?"
The Hasaki Ambassador, Sings-On-Shores, was by no means amused. The lizard like reptilians blue scales flared in anger as he spoke back. "For the third time, we have a human fleet calling itself the Cybratech Corporation demanding that we surrender one of our colony worlds! I demand an explanation!"
Harley simply let out a chuckle, as if he was suppressing the desire to laugh. "Oh? Corpo rats huh? Well they are a private entity. There's nothing we can do to stop you, or them."
Sings-On-Shores was somewhat confused, but more upset and angry. "What? WHAT!?"
Harley simply said, that typical sly, 'I am up to something sneaky' grin on his face that we had become so accustomed to seeing. "What I am saying Ambassador is... That whatever you decide to do with them is entirely your decision."
Sings-On-Shores was astonished. This situation was a full invasion by galactic standards, it was the equivalent of a declaration of war. "But... They are your people! You speak for them!"
Harley's smile disappeared and his demeanor changed to one of seriousness. "Mister Ambassador with all due respect, need I remind you of Federation Colonization legislation number Seven Five Eight, Paragraph three? I quote: 'The first claimant to any star system that has the capacity to maintain any industry on that planet, has full and absolute control of its industry and inevitably, it's defense, is the sole and exclusive claimant to that star system.'" Harley said, and looked at his counterpart.
"Of course I remember the damn legislation! I helped sign that into law a hundred years ago! What the hell are you talking about!?" Sings-On-Shores demanded, his scales flustering between breaths.
"What I am saying, Sir, is that Private entities known as Corporations and other private entities can form OUTSIDE of the Alliances jurisdiction. They can get rich, get an ego the size of a cargo freighter and then suddenly decide 'I am god now, I can do what I want.' and go on a rampage. We allow it, for reasons that should be obvious. We do however... DISAVOW." Harleys last word in that statement took the Hasaki Ambassador by surprise.
"Disavow... wh-?" The entire concept for the Hasaki of private corporations operating outside of jurisdiction was as much a foreign concept to him as could be imagined.
"We allow these entities to buy their own fleets, set up shop and do what they do. they return to the Alliance eventually one way or another, Its just business. But sometimes... the rich and wealthy develop a god complex. And it is up to the normal people in the galaxy to remind them of what they really are. Lest they do stupid things." Harley responded. He looked into the monitor, and visibly closed one of his eyes in a cheeky manner, with his smile returned.
Sings-On-Shores went silent for a moment. As if processing the information. "Understood, Ambassador."
"One more thing..." Harley said. His demeanor shifted again, to a dead serious and absolute severity. "Do not fire on that Ark ship. Those people signed up for a new life, not an execution. There are children on board. We will see to it they get passage to a new colony world one way or another. But the corpo fleet? Heh... Enjoy the salvage."
Sings-On-Shores acknowledged with his own sinister grin, and closed the call.

A few hours later, a very heavily armed war fleet of the Triumvirate warped into the star system. Outnumbering and heavily outgunning the Corpo fleet. As expected, sensing danger the Ark ship immediately performed an FTL emergency jump, and vanished to the borders of the system where, a Human Alliance fleet was casually waiting for them. The corporate fleet was nothing short of obliterated by plasma cannons and heavy weapons fire from a Triumvirate dreadnought and its escorts. Nothing left but salvage and slag floating hopeless in the expanse where a salvage crew from the colony appeared and went to town.
Three thousand people were killed in that fight. Two Triumvirate ships were lost, totaling 600 losses, battleships no less. The rest were human losses. Corvettes, pickets, escort ships and mostly small low quality frigates crewed by 'Corporate drones' and contracted slave workers. As Harley said, 'nothing worth keeping.'

The human ambassadors and agents explained that rich corporations or other such entities would go mad with power, gather followers or create clone armies - highly illegal clone armies - and attempt to claim what they wanted. Human Alliance officers always knew what was going on, and made sure that one way or another, in a fair and balanced manner, they would always lose.
"In a fair and balanced manner." That sentence is almost always expressed with a certain sadistic glee.

***************************************************************************

Entry Four: Unbelievable Charity

This event is in stark contrast to the New Haven Incident that took place some twelve years later. Humanity was now at the forefront of Galactic politics and economics. New Haven was in fact a Bakari settlement and I had been called in to help them reinforce their trade position with the local area and help them along. I was in the orbital station garrisoning the colony when I heard the call to action.
The communications arrays suddenly exploded with SOS signals, emergency alerts and warnings of every kind as a staggering earthquake hit one of the continents. Seismologists put the quake on a massive eleven point four on the scale, enough to tilt the planets axis three degrees, open two new fault lines, slow the planets rotation speed by almost a full second and cause seven subsequent volcanic detonations across the tectonic plate.
Twenty nine cities were impacted and a hundred and fifty million lives were at stake. Before I could do anything however. A message interrupted all communications directed at the local garrison.

"Distress Signal Received. This is Alliance Fleet Sons Of The Dawn responding. Admiral Beckett Gray reporting. Request permission to enter Federation airspace."
I was on the bridge with the station captain helping him organize a response at this time, and without thinking, I immediately jumped on the communicator in a response. "This is federation Ambassador Khrakhan Eld responding, permission granted."
The station captain was somewhat annoyed with me. It was not exactly polite to supplant his authority. I was only an ambassador, so he scolded me for it. "How dare you do that! This is my station! You dare break with protocol like that!"
"Captain Sundaris please, this is an emergency situation." I responded, trying to stay calm.

Before however we could argue this point, a hundred dropships, cargo ships and two planetary cruisers blasted past the station making us jump in surprise as they whizzed past us. Moments later the massive hull of one of the Alliances two kilometer long Planetary Assault Carriers rumbled past the station, its sheer size and speed causing the windows and plating on the stations hull to rattle. Very few people outside the Alliance had seen one of these magnificent beasts, and as it slipped past us we got a glimpse as to exactly why.

A strange ship with a triangular or diamond shaped hull, hangar bays on the sides, heavy armor plating with dozens of shield generators dotted the meters thick armor plating. Weapons seen only on dreadnoughts or battleships lined its side hull under the bridge section and more small craft were being hastily ejected from its side mounted hangars. Its most terrifying component was what was mounted at the front - a Spinal mounted ion cannon. I could very clearly see a tell-tale sign of an emitter array barely sticking out the front end.

It entered the planets atmosphere flawlessly and we watched in awe as a full army of humans flooded out of the ships hull as it touched ground causing a puff of dust. Two more of these PAC class ships followed, then three more after that, and one more lagging behind with various cargo ships and drop transports seemingly welded to its outer hull followed, all within moments of each other. Two more smaller craft, known as Trade Frigates or Droid Frigates, ships whose superstructure is primarily consistent of communications arrays and antennae, appeared and entered the stations orbital patterns and began transmitting commands and orders, organizing the planets scattered and broken emergency signals.

The captain and I looked at each other, mouths agape at the sight we just witnessed. Not just one of them, but SEVEN? How many of them did humanity have!?

"One hundred and thirty four. And still counting." I heard a voice behind me say.
"Wh- Pardon?" I asked, now looking at a human Marine standing in the control room.
"That's how many of those ships we have. One hundred and thirty four by last count, with drydocks and shipyards in Alliance space working to produce another six hundred within the next ten years. As per our trade agreements, one hundred of those ships will be handed over to our allies and trade partners." He said with a smile, handing me a data pad.
He must have heard the voice in my head somehow, or he just simply knew what the question was, probably having been asked it a thousand times. "Erm... Uh... Th-Thank you uh..." I cleared my throat and straightened my shoulders, attempting to compose myself. "Carry on soldier. We will coordinate with your teams on the ground and translate what we can. Not everyone on the planet understands the Galactic standard language yet, so we will do our best. Patch us in to your commslink and we will assist where we can."
"Sir yes, Sir!" The human saluted, then immediately charged back out of the station. Moments later, a new group of humans appeared and without orders, began to redirect communications and show us bodycam footage from the ground.

What followed was the single largest and most grueling disaster relief campaign in seventy years. Twenty thousand ships. Two hundred million tons of medical supplies. Six hundred million tons of food and water. Two million humans working to save the lives of a hundred million people. Three and a half months of work.

After all was said and done, as many lives saved as possible, Human constructor fleets appeared with another surprise. They called them Manufactoriums, city sized ships with no armament or defense equipment, but cargo containers, construction drones and building hardware. Twenty two of them. It wasn't a ship in the traditional sense... to be honest it looked more like a children's block building set with giant engines. Big, fat, squared boxes with various patterns of armor plating mounted on a set of giant starship thrusters.

They landed on the planets surface and began to, for lack of a better term, unpack themselves. They landed, then a system of... i guess robots, started to unpack the blocky monster. Within hours, the ships had disappeared and turned into organized and perfected geometric patterns. They essentially made a prepackaged city and flew it out to act as a replacement for the city that was destroyed. Millions homeless, now almost instantly rehoused.

All the humans asked for in return was that we honor trade agreements and maintain the Alliance.

***************************************************************************

And so here we stand, many decades into the greatest and hopefully longest lasting friendship in history as Humanity rapidly carves itself into our hearts and our minds, with their increasingly erratic and interesting behavior. They are the only species in galactic history - that we are aware of anyway - to not immediately attempt to forge a galactic hegemony or engage in a genocide without due cause.

They are also one of extremely few species that everybody likes. Most like their presence or enjoy their company. Some simply ignore them. The few that don't like them are quick to change their minds when rescuers or negotiators arrive when a problem shows up.

Humans are here to stay. Hopefully for a damn long time.

Final Log: Khrakhan Eld, Jukhanian Ambassador to the Human Alliance. Stardate - Human Year 2386.

2023.03.30 18:53 LordReginaldC Privacy plant for fence panel with upper lattice portion

We live in a 7a zone, winters typically dip below 20f at the lowest but some years it will get to 0f. Summers are hot and are usually above 100f even getting into the teens, we do have sprinklers. One side of the yard is full sun all day long, the other is pretty shaded between our house and the neighbors trees for most of the day. If I missed any important points I'll be happy to provide more information, first time here.
Our backyard has cedar fence panels like the one shown in the image, I just wish they had used a regular fence panel because right at eye level there is that lattice portion that provides zero privacy. I'm thinking some kind of vine that can run along the top and fill in the lattice, but I'm also concerned about them getting out of hand and getting into other peoples properties. I was thinking English Ivy but am leaning away from it for that reason, and have been looking at Star Jasmine instead. Evergreen is important due to the cold winters we have.
I was also trying to get ideas on how to add more shade on the sunny side because of how hot and dry it can get back there even with regular watering. Thought about clumping bamboo, or arborvitae (not a fan of them), whatever it would be it would need to be quite tall. The yard is small as it is and don't really like the idea of taking up a lot of space for shade providing plants however, privacy with the lattice is a bigger priority. Overall greenifying/cooling the backyard is the ultimate goal.
Any better suggestions than star jasmine for filling in the lattice? Or a couple of shade plant ideas I could toy around with in my head?

2023.03.30 18:52 thisismyusername_666 27 [M4F] Knoxville Tennessee. Looking for anything.

I'm 27. Only had one gf my entire life. Admittedly I've been super depressed and lonely for a while. I'm average build, on the slimmer side. Short dark hair, brown eyes, not very short but not that tall. I have pictures of myself on my reddit profile if you want to check them out for yourself. I like movies, music of most all kinds and I'm into niche stuff. I also like clubbing occasionally and going out on hikes. I prefer alt girls with similar interests but I'm happy to meet anyone. I live on the edge between Kentucky and Tennessee so I'm willing to venture out to Knoxville Tennessee or further or go out to London or Lexington Kentucky possibly. I have absolutely zero luck on dating apps so I figured I'd give this a shot.

2023.03.30 18:52 ChrischinLoois Doing a wilderness survival campaign, one player wants to be College of Whispers bard

So my campaign basically starts in a city and their quest takes them beyond civilization into the northern frozen wastes. So once that kicks off, they are pretty much in a frozen tundra wildlife adventure for the remainder of the campaign. One party member is a rogue, which is fine but now another wants to be a college of whispers bard. Should I let them know that there wont really be a ton of city/politics/stealing/etc in this campaign and that maybe they should choose something else? Or is there still a good place for them here?

One idea I do have, one player has assassins that have been trying to kill him because his ring of mind shielding holds the soul of someone important that they want. I thought about secretly letting my whispers bard know about this, and have them be sort of a spy within the party feeding information to the assassins. This player is a cool dude, and Im confident he wont turn it into a pvp scenario, and will most likely go the route of "enjoying the party's company more than his evil employer and decides to side with who his target was down the road" but obviously that is out of my hands so this decision could come back to bite.
Any advice is appreciated. I let them all know this is a wilderness campaign and Im just baffled no one chose ranger or druid or anything that would actually fit the adventure. But Id like to work with what they decided they wanted to play if I can

2023.03.30 18:45 filipyoo How My Startup Raised $150,000 With 0 Employee 0 Cofounder

From the first line of code, to having the money in the bank, it took me 4 years of side hustling while having a 9 to 5 job, and 9 months of working on it full-time.
I spent hours digging Quora, Reddit, startup stories trying to find answers to “how to fundraise as a solo founder without a team”. There were more arguments against doing so than success stories.
Things like:
- find a cofounder
- if you can’t even convince someone to join you, how can you convince investors?
- single point of failure: what if you get hit by a bus?
- you can’t possibly do everything by yourself
Those are all valid and justified concerns.

I end up finding the answer myself by going through it for my startup SewaYou after lots of moments of self-doubt.
I’ll walk you through my journey to reach this point.
I hope my experience can help you go through one of the darkest moments in a startup founder’s life - fundraising, because many of us (wrongly) associate our personal and company value or worth with the Yes or No from investors.
Please read until the end to learn how I did it.

Timeline

Quick personal background: I started my career as a software engineer in Japan 5 years ago, and was building on the side my, now startup, SewaYou, an app to help you find language exchange partners in your area.
During 4 years here in Japan Tokyo, I’ve worked for 3 different companies while side-hustling, quit twice my full-time job and finally get the Japanese Permanent Residency to allow me to legally open and run a company.
I quit my last corporate job in October 2021, so almost a year now.
In December 2021, so 2 months after I quit my job, I got invited to speak at a small event to share my experience as a solo founder.
That talk then helped me get introduced to a few people, and I ended up being introduced to a VC in Tokyo. That was the first time that I got my first step into that whole startup ecosystem.
Got an in-person meeting with one of the general partner of the VC, and then got introduced to another general partner over email.
That was right before the year-end holidays, so you can guess that it was not the best timing to start an investment discussion or business deal.
During the holidays, I also took time to reflect and see whether it’s the right choice to raise VC money at this stage of my project, or should I go with Angels investors instead, or wait a bit more.
Then around mid January, so a few weeks after the introduction email, I sent a follow up email, without much follow up.
Social momentum is real: you’ll be forgotten if you don’t keep that momentum and try to quickly get to a potential agreement.
I also incorporate my project into a real company, a 株式会社 for those who know, which is a joint-stock company in February 22. (2022/02/22).
An easy date to remember and to prepare the legal side in case I might receive investment in the near future.
I know that I needed to raise money at some point, as soon as possible and I can’t possibly grow the project with just my 1-year-ish savings and stay as a one-man show.
Startups is about growth, and fast growth.
So, after that, I started to dig into finding and talking to like 4 or 5 potential angels investors instead, and attended one pitch event online.
Btw, making a pitch slide deck is also pretty time consuming but that helps to understand your business better and think of thing like financials, and go-to-market strategy.
At first, I was pitching angels with the mindset of “I need funding”. This will show in your words as you might sound desperate without you even realizing it.
So as expected, I didn’t get much out of it neither. It’s better to hear a clear No so that you can move on.
But mostly, I didn’t hear neither a clear No nor a clear Yes. That’s a difficult situation you can find yourself in. So I appreciate investors saying straight No.
It’s pretty common to find angels or investors who only invest if there’s a bigger player who leads the round so they can follow.
It also doesn’t help to be a solo founder without a team, nor prior track record of exiting a previous startup.
I wasn’t working neither on trendy projects of the moment to get an extra excitement from investors.
I mean language exchange/learning doesn’t sound that trendy or hot the way NFTs or web3 projects seem to be, right?
So instead, I took all the valuable feedback and just focus on improving the product. That’s a good thing to talk to investors even though you don’t get any investment, they still kindly give you valuable feedback!
So I stopped trying to look for investors, and spent the next 5 months in focus mode just building and improving my app, code, talk to users, code, retain users, rinse and repeat.
I spent time testing hypothesis, adding new features, deprecating features that are not used, improving the app performance, make it more user friendly, get feedback and so on.
I played to my strengths and focus on building the best product possible that people want. Better build a beautiful product than beautiful pitch slides.
Then I started to implement a payment system and try to charge users.
To my surprise, I realized that there’re people who need your product enough to be willing to swipe their credit card. That was a big validation and leverage.
At that time, my app SewaYou, which is a social consumer app, had only around 5000 users with around 700 Monthly Active Users.
At around the same time, after getting my first organic paid users, I got introduced to another VC. One Zoom meeting, one in-person meeting demoing SewaYou app, showing some traction KPIs, talking about the big vision.
They decided to invest. A month later the money is in the bank.
That’s what I take: 2 meetings and an app demo, no pitch deck, and small due diligence.
At the seed stage, you know when a VC or investor wants to invest or not after one or two meetings. If it takes too much time for them to decide, that might not be a good sign.
I was asked questions like:
- How much I plan to raise
- How I’m gonna spend that money
- How much % am I willing to give for the amount raised.
We agree on a % that is less than 10% for this first seed round.
In term of the due diligence, it was pretty basic:
- I wrote a small report summarizing my app usage metrics, like monthly download progress, MAU and other basic metrics.
- I wrote a one page Business Plan with projected revenues and user growth for the next year
- and copies of legal papers like the Company Articles of Incorporation. Fortunately, since I already incorporated my company back a few months ago, this step was quick
Then we started to draft the terms for the investment, with the help of a lawyer that they also introduced. Everything was written in Japanese, even though I can speak fluently Japanese, I still need some time to go through it.
The whole process took around 3-4 weeks, from the terms drafting and having the investment money wired to my company bank account.
That was a good thing to incorporate my company and opening a corporate bank account beforehand, so the investment process can go smooth and quick, because at a seed and early stage, there are teams working on projects without having a company ready.

Recap

To recap a little bit my journey:
- it took me 4 years of side hustle and 9 months full-time to build from scratch my app as a solo founder doing everything myself (dev, design, marketing…)
- I had no prior credentials or track records such as second time or exited founder
- time spent from “I want to fundraise” to “the $ is in the bank” was 8 months
- numbers of investors pitched: 2 VCs and less than 5 angels
- pitching event attended: 1 (and it was online due to Covid)
- amount raised: 20 million JPY (which is roughly $150k) for less than 10% of equity
I’ve seen stories where people pitched 98 times at events, reached out to 146 investors, and got 145 “No” and a single “Yes”. How much energy and time were spent on that effort? Fundraising is really hard.
My journey is a bit different, and I hope that can give you more data and founder stories.
Here are lessons I learned and some takeaways:
- as a solo founder, there’s nobody else to hedge against or hide behind, you’re completely out there in the wild
- your army is your product, your execution power and you as a person
- show why you’re the best person to build your specific product
- when your personal story aligns with your startup vision, it resonates.
SewaYou is on a mission to help people unlock and multiply opportunities in life, relationship, and career by reaching an advanced level in foreign languages.
And that’s what happened to me: a foreigner who learns Japanese, landed in Japan, mastering the language and finally quitting my 9to5 job to pursue my dream to build a startup and contribute back to Japan that makes me grow as a person while building my startup.

So what now?

So that’s it, my journey from side hustling to fundraising as a solo founder with zero employee or cofounder.
But like they say: “Alone you go fast, together you go far”, it’s now time for SewaYou to go beyond a one-man show, so I will spend the investment money to start recruiting and build a small team.
I also have this in a video version if you prefer to listen, and also other stuff (like How I built my app part-time for 4 years etc) around building and growing a startup as a solo and foreign founder in Japan!
Thanks for reading so far! 😀

2023.03.30 18:42 polemonium-eximium I'm considering an open relationship and wondering if I'm making a mistake..

My partner and I are both women, and have been struggling for the past 3 years after she confessed to me that she felt like she was missing something in our sex life. She's bisexual, and told me she was feeling like she was missing the sexual aspect of men. We love eachother so much, and have been together for 7 years, but our sex life has pretty much fallen apart since her confession. She says she would ideally like an open relationship so she can be sexually fulfilled by some kind of FWB scenario, where its a sexual relationship without emotions involved.
I've been holding out as strictly monogamous for years, but I'm also realizing that we are really codependent and I'm extremely insecure. This isn't something I want to continue, so we've set some steps to work on this. I've also been asking Reddit their opinion on everything, and I kind of had a breakthrough about non-monogamy the other day. I liked what someone said about their relationship always being the "main quest" but that doesn't mean they can't have "side quests." I feel like if we were both exploring, it would really help us to feel like a better version of ourselves, and that we could show up better for eachother. I also am feeling like I genuinely want her to feel fulfilled and it would make me happy to know that she can explore that. I also like that it could bring a feeling of excitement, but of course also jealousy.
I've never seriously considered ENM, so I'm worried that I'm only considering it now because I want to make her happy. Any advice to someone who is just starting to consider this? It all feels so difficult to do right, and I'm worried that we haven't done the ground work. We're set to talk through what a short "break" to think through options would look like, and so I'm planning to talk to her about my change of heart soon.
I shared this recently in bisexual, which is where I had my breakthrough :https://www.reddit.com/bisexual/comments/122395l/update_my_partner_misses_sex_with_men_is_a_break/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=android_app&utm_name=androidcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button

2023.03.30 18:36 ImaginationSea3679 Peaceful Alternatives! Nature of a Giant Chapter 8

A recent development has given me some motivation, so I might be able to get just a couple more posts in every other day.
Anyway, I hope you enjoy.

By the gods, I wish I could use public transportation outside the trains and tubes. Having to walk everywhere sucks!!! The magistrate offices were in the center of the commercial district, but the design of the district had the trains go in a loop with a four business block radius around them for some reason. That’s something like twelve kilometers according to Jacob’s measurements. I think the planners believed the absence of such large machinery would emphasize the importance of the government building, but for someone who has to walk the entire four blocks, it just makes me question their need. Fancy central buildings. Why don’t you just move to a regular office next to a station?
I’m taking a moment to rest on a bench. I’ve still got a block to go before reaching the governmental building. The breeze flowing through my fur feels wonderful! A couple children have even come forward and asked if they could feel it! I let them pat it lightly, as their parents apologized on the chance that they were bothering me. I honestly liked the attention.
Okay, my heart has calmed down again, so I’ve rested long enough. The building is finally in sight.
The Magistrate building was massively built in a nice stone white and built to look like a six pointed star from overhead, but here on the ground you could at most see three of the legs flow gently from the central dome to the ground. Between each leg was a blue pond and a field of well-tended grass on the sunward sides, and a field of smooth black pebbles on the shaded sides. Like the mountains where Venlil are supposed to have once lived.
I strode up the steps and began to duck so I can enter. I am going to be meeting-
I almost ran over a grey Venlil backing out the same door. He turned to me, “S-Sorry for bumping into you.” With that, he took off in a lumbering gait.
I stepped into the central dome with my tail in a wag. The place had a beautiful wood facade upon the walls, with columns like trees between the exit doors and doors to the legs. The ring of light at the top kept the place well lit. A circle of desks surrounded a smaller domed room in the center, the offices and council room of the High Magistrate.
There weren’t many people in at the moment. There was a Venlil standing guard at the entrance of each of the Magistrate offices, and only about five manning the public service desks to help the few patrons here.
I moved slowly towards the closest manned desk, lowering myself as I approached. A tan female employee was passing a lady back her data pad.
I moved up to the desk and sat in front of it after pushing the chair to the side. These may be taller than the pharmacy desks, coming up to a Venlil’s chest rather than waist, but that just amounted to me starting over the counter like I was a normal sized Venlil with an absurdly large head.
“Can I help you?”
“Yes ma’am,” I said softly, pulling out my pad, “I am here to register for transit as part of the Venlil-Human Cooperative Exchange.” I placed my pad on the desk.
“The… the Meet-a-Human program?” Ah, a third name. “You are part of one of those?”
“Yes ma’am. I have all my information prepared.” I pushed my pad a little closer for emphasis. “This is the correct place for that, right?”
“Yes! It is.” She picked up my pad and grabbed their own pad as well and began the transfer of the info. “Your fur looks good.”
A good distraction! “Thank you! Have you ever heard of Paly’s Fur Salon?”
That gave her pause. Seems she wasn’t expecting me to be casual. “No. I haven’t.”
I wagged my tail. “It’s just a small salon on the starward edge of the commercial district. Wonderful service! I mean, feel!” I offered my arm.
She gave me a weird look. I kept my arm offered, so she hesitantly reached out and placed her paw upon it. Her ears perked up in surprise as felt my fur. “Woah…”
“I know!” I wagged my tail in joy. “Paly is so skilled! If you wished, you could check out her salon!”
She seemed to have calmed down completely. “I certainly must! I mean, Wow!” She began to rub her own arm as a comparison.
“Yeah,” I pulled my arm back into my seated position. “I hope the humans are also impressed. So, may I please register?”
“Oh, yes!” The grabbed the pads, “one moment.”
She began clicking the selectors of both pads, likely copying information between them.
“You’re… Tarlim, right?”
“Yes.” I felt my ears lower from nerves.
She looked over the information for a moment, an unreadable expression on her face. “One moment please.” With that, she ran over and entered the High Magistrate offices.
As she left, I got back to my feet. My ears were down, I could feel my tail start to curl around myself. Breathe, Tarlim. In. Out. Calm. She still has your pad, so it’s up to you to monitor yourself.
Eventually, someone came out of the office.
He was a very uncommon Venlil, with a spotty pattern in his fur. A black patch of fur spread over his eyes and mouth in the shape of a bowl, but the rest of him was a random pattern pattern of black and white like someone had tossed a bucket of ink at him. However, this was not the most important thing about him.
“Honorable High Magistrate Rolem. I offer you my greetings.”
The High Magistrate of Dawn Creek. My opinion of him is positive. Overall, recent economy notwithstanding, Dawn Creek has thrived under him.
“Hello Tarlim. I understand you’re part of the Cultural exchange.”
“Yes sir. If you need to see my information, you will have to get my pad back from the woman who was at this desk. Is something wrong?”
“Well, unfortunately, I neglected to take your gigantism into account, so a room is unavailable for you. There is, however, space in the storage compartment for you. We can get you some official accommodations. All you have to do is give the crew of the transport ship the signal.” He pushed a document with a sign in space towards me.
I was a bit miffed, but my excitement at still being able to meet Jacob overruled that. I mean, it could have been a lot worse, right?
