2023.06.04 13:55 Death_Birb Heroes Relics made out of the remaining Nabateans
This is based on the
post made by
u/Opposite_Room! In it, they wonder what Rhea, Seteth, and Flayn would look like as Heroes Relics. I got really interested and started writing a response, but then it got too long, so I decided to make it into a post. I'll also be looking at Macuil and Indech because why not?
Lets unpack!
Heroes Relics
Before we start, we need to make clear what Heroes Relics are. Rhea says it quite clearly in her exposition dump at the end of Verdant Wind.
"
I was never able to forgive those who proudly wielded weapons crafted from the corpses of my brethren."
Corpses! They're all corpses.
"
From the blood of the progenitor god, Sothis, he acquired the Crest of Flames. From her bones and heart, he crafted the Sword of the Creator."
More specificially, the Crest comes from the blood of the slaughtered Nabatean, the relics are made out of their bones, and the Crest Stone is their heart.
That begs the question, though. Are the bones taken from the human form or the dragon form? Well, judging by
this book in the Shadow Library, probably the dragon form.
"...Based on the composition of___it can be surmised that______likelya massive creature akin to a wyvern. However___strength is beyondcompare to that of wyvern bones." - The Truth of the Heroes' Relics Alright, we got the information on the required ingredients:
- Crest: Nabatean blood
- Relic: Nabatean bone
- Stone: Nabatean heart
Oh, and people often say that the Sword of the Creator is made out of Sothis's spine, which is a completely valid take, but it's just as likely that it's made out of her tail!
The SOTC also gives us one more bit of interesting information about the Heroes Relics.
Sword of the Creator Concept Art The sword
is pretty big, but it doesn't look like it would be a very long whip. There are only a finite amount of vertebrae on that blade, after all-
Wat Okay, so the orange line is the sword extending. How does that work? Well, we know that the Relics are made out of
dragon bones. Their bones would be too big to turn into a weapon made for a human. It looks like the bones get compressed into a smaller size, and because of this, the SOTC is able to extend.
Or maybe Sothis is an eastern-type dragon. I didn't mention that possibility in my
last post, but someone did comment on it. Noodle dragon Sothis, anyone?
Oh, and this could also be applied to the other Heroes Relics.
Areadbhar is a hand, but it's far too small for a giant dragon. It's also entirely possible that it's a stylistic choice or just magic. Moving on.
Weapon type
We still have one more question we need to answer: Are the Heroes Relics based on the type of weapon the Nabatean wields? Fortunately, we have a bunch of Sacred Weapons that belong to dead dragons.
- Sword of Begalta - Riegan (Bow)
- Sword of Moralta - Fraldarius (Shield)
- Tathlum Bow - Lamine (Rafail Gem)
- Axe of Ukonvasara - Gloucester (Staff)
- Scroll of Talos - Noa (...?)
The answer is no, the Heroes Relics can be anything you want them to be.
NOW we can start cooking up some relics!
Rhea/Seiros - The Immaculate One
Since the relics are made out of dragon bones, we'll need to take a look at Rhea's dragon form.
II - The High Priestess Perfect. Let's start brainstorming.
Sword A sword seems like the obvious pick. Rhea already wields the Sword of Seiros, and it would mimic the Sword of The Creator. Its design depends entirely on what body part we use, and I think that the best option here is the spine.
More specifically, the part that acts as a sail.
https://preview.redd.it/me6i7ti6wy3b1.png?width=427&format=png&auto=webp&s=bc1ae32b8e9bdfd21d3b57702ab73104be989f69 Take a good look at it. It would work
quite well as a serrated blade, wouldn't it? The large sail at the end could work as the crossguard, and it already has a hole for the Crest Stone. The rest of the hilt could be made with the last few pieces of the spine. It's possible that it could also function as a whip. You could make it look nearly identical to the SOTC if you want.
Like mother, like daughter.
Axe Don't worry, we're not making another Aymr. Labraunda is a Sacred Weapon attuned to the Crest of Seiros. It seems fitting to make a mockery out of it. Plus, Rhea hates thieves, and we know that brigands love using axes. Another humiliation to add to, well, being dead.
Consider using the lower jawbone.
https://preview.redd.it/vb7idqldwy3b1.png?width=223&format=png&auto=webp&s=63886b618e61a40e9087d2fca91ad19a96fc1dc7 It's already quite sharp, what with all those spikes protruding out of it. It could work as the blade, with the shoulderblades securing it to the axe base, which could be made out of a strong bone like the femur. Tendons could be used to further secure it. It's also possible to split the lower jawbone in two and use it as two seperate blades for each side of the axe. The Crest Stone could be in the pommel, or in the center of the axe head. Whatever suits you best.
Gauntlets Some people suggested gauntlets because of Rhea's proficiency in brawling. A very fun idea! Let's look at the body. What body part could be used as a gauntlet? Well, we could choose between the talons or the upper part of the skull.
https://preview.redd.it/z9eiude7vy3b1.png?width=523&format=png&auto=webp&s=612bc382c8f5e85bb7056f836ad4fbeffa041712 The bones of the hand would be the base of the gauntlet, with the three claws serving as the deadly blades. The bones could also be bended in a way that puts the claw on the back more where the thumb would be. Or maybe the bones can be hollowed out in a way that would let you slide your hand right in without issue.
Then there is the upper part of the skull.
https://preview.redd.it/qbylqqhywy3b1.png?width=223&format=png&auto=webp&s=e52166232317a2e8b4efb84d4c0d485e7a23766a
https://preview.redd.it/d35c0in31z3b1.png?width=263&format=png&auto=webp&s=a20355d64f5e3d526002008391b8cdda3d46722a The eye sockets can work as holes for the wearer's hand to fit through if necessary, but I believe it could work without that. You just need to hollow out the skull. The snout could be sharpened, with the fangs being kept in their current position. The wearer could bring their hand down to slap an opponent and the fangs woud sink right in. I believe that the Crest Stone could work right in the middle, where the horns meet the head. It could also be placed more towards the back.
Of course, the horns. You could leave them out, if you so wish, but there is potential there.
https://preview.redd.it/id5s9x2gzy3b1.png?width=402&format=png&auto=webp&s=810b3488a31cfc7631c815195c2ba2c307cc017c The horns that go back could go up the wearers arm and act as a bit of extra protection. And the curved horns could be angled in a way so that if you miss a hit, you'll likely still catch them with the horn.
And yes, I know that some people would say to use the
vagina bones pelvis. I suppose you could turn it into knuckle dusters. Drill a few holes for the fingers, polish it, and you'll have yourself a fine weapon.
Seteth/Cichol - The Hammer of Judgement
Unfortunately, we don't have a dragon design sheet for Seteth, nor Flayn. That's why we'll be using theories.
At first glance, it looks like the 5 Nabatean's dragon forms are based on the
Five Guardians in Chinese mythology. Black Tortoise for Indech, Vermillion Bird for Macuil, and the Yellow Dragon for Rhea. That leaves us with the Azure Dragon and White Tiger.
Seteth is an Earth Dragon, so one could say that a tiger fits him best, as it feels more 'earthly' than a dragon.
The Ochain Shield, which was made specifically for Seteth, has a feline design.
The other theory is that his dragon form is the
dragon of the Church's coat of arms. It does not resemble the Immaculate One at all, and considering that there are accurate depictions of the Immaculate One around, it's unlikely that the Church would get it wrong.
The mural also gives us some insight The two dragons on the left could be Flayn and Seteth. The one all the way in the back would be Seteth, while the muppet is Flayn.
I'm going to make Seteth a mix of all of these to make things easier for myself.
XI - Justice Hammer Well, we can't pass up the opportunity to turn him into a literal hammer! There are many parts of the body that could work as a hammer. I would personally go for the heel bone.
A tiger's bones The tibia and fibula could be melted together to form the shaft, and the last part of the tailbone could be used as a small spike on the top or even a chain. The Crest Stone could rest in its pommel or right in the center of the hammer.
Spear He likes to use spears? Then he can become one. The femur is quite strong. You can sharpen one point of it and place the Crest Stone on the other side.
Gauntlets Járngreipr is a Sacred Weapon attuned with the crest of Cichol. Why not show him what real gauntlets look like? Use the shoulderblades as the base, claws/teeth/horns/spikes as the blades, and the clavicula/rib as the handle.
Shield Think of the Ochain shield, but with an actual dragon head in the middle. The Earth Dragon's skull is surely strong enough to act as a shield, no? It could be even be holding the Crest Stone in its jaws.
Flayn/Cethleann - The Benevolent One
Flayn is left with the Azure Dragon. She is a light dragon, so a more traditional dragon look would fit her. The other theory says that the
banner with a dragon in Seteth's office is Flayn's dragon form. Seteth could have a picture of his daughter in his office as a "do it for her!" motivational poster. The picture below is the most likely her, so I'll be using that.
VI - The Lovers Staff She can continue healing people long after she's dead. Let's see.. The
radius and ulna can be used as the top shaft. You could curl them around each other like two tight strands of DNA. Yes, I know that will be difficult, but we have nukes, so what's bending a few bones? The Crest Stone can be placed at the top, with the hands cradling it. The humerus can be the lower shaft. There can be soft padding in the middle to act as the grip.
Tome She's a healer, but... See those two tiny little horns on the side of her head? They can act as a sort of lock for the tome. The upper part of her body seems to be covered in scales of some sort. Use that as the book covering, with the wing's membranes acting as the pages. The Crest Stone can be where you want it to be.
Indech - The Immovable
XIV: Temperance We can crack this turtle open and create some weapons out of it.
Shield That shell on its back is practically
begging to be used as a shield. Those sharp spikes would also make it effective for bashing it against people. The straps could be made out of the tendons, and the Crest Stone could be placed in the top part where there are no spikes.
Bow It loves to use a bow, so why not turn it into one? Take a look at the horns on the side of its head. They could be fused together to create the bow, with the Crest Stone right in the middle of it. Tendons and muscle fibers could act as the bowstring, and the spikes on the back of its shell would make for
perfect arrows.
Macuil - The Wind Caller
I - The Magician Huh, surprisingly fluffy. What kind of weapons can we make out of it?
Tome Turning the magician into a tome, eh? The scales on its belly would work as the covering, with a small hole in the side for the Crest Stone. The pages.. Hm. There should be more than enough soft cartilage to use for that.
Sword Hey, if it likes to use a sword, why not turn it into one? Flatten the skull, split it vertically, and you'll have yourself a lovely blade to use! The crest stone? Eh, place it in the crossguard. A horn could work as the hilt. Why, you could make daggers out of it.
Bow Using a flying beast to take down other flying beasts. It's poetry.
\"With wings that control the very wind, the Wind Caller possesses vast intelligence and exalted strength.\" The "wings that control the very wind" would be perfect for this. Pluck the feathers and cut away all the meat, and you'll have two bow limbs. The shoulderblades would work as the grip, though they would need to be edited a bit to make them easier to grasp. We'll use tendons and muscle fibers to act as the bowstring, and the arrows could be made out of the ribs.
Closing thoughts
These are the Heroes Relics designs I have come up with for the remaining Nabateans. Which one do you like best? Will you pick the one you think works best as a functional weapon, or will you pick the one that looks the coolest? It's good that the Heroes Relics never decay, so they'll always work well, and look awesome.
You know, the Heroes Relics don't decay because Nabateans just.. don't do that. They go into a deep slumber to recover from near-death experiences. It's even questionable whether or not they die from old age.
I wonder if they're still aware. The relics twitch. Why? Will the ones that join them do the same?
If their current state is like a deep slumber, are they experiencing everything as a nightmare? A nightmare that doesn't seem to end? Or do they know what has happened? Are they furious? Was Miklan turning into a demonic beast an act of revenge?
Or was it an act of desperation? A way to return to what they once were?

2023.06.04 08:16 BlairDaniels I babysat a parrot. It said some... disturbing... things.
My neighbor, Henry Johnson, would be out of town for two weeks. His wife had just left him, and he needed to clear his head. So he asked me to house sit. As a broke college student, I said yes.
The housesitting duties included taking care of the Johnsons’ parrot—a 17-year-old African Grey named Snickers. I didn’t know much about birds, but he’d left me detailed instructions on how to take care of her.
The first night of my job, I decided to stay for a few hours. I needed to get a problem set done, and the Johnsons’ large, empty house was the perfect study place. After feeding Snickers and giving her water, I got set up on the couch.
But it wasn’t long before she interrupted me.
“STOP!”
I whipped around. Snickers was standing on her perch, staring at me with one gray eye. “STOP! STOP!” she repeated.
Rolling my eyes, I went back to the problem set. Differential equations. Why did I decide to major in engineering, again? ! tapped my pencil against the page. Maybe it’s time for another snack break.
“STOP, OH GOD, STOP.”
Snickers was bouncing from one perch to the other, bobbing her head, as carefree as could be. But the way she said that sent shivers down my spine. She was clearly imitating someone in distress. Probably just repeating from a movie, I told myself.
But I was so, so wrong.
“STOP, OH GOD, STOP. HENRY, STOP.”
Henry.
That was his name. Henry Johnson.
I turned and stared at the parrot. She stared back at me and whistled a few times. And them she continued.
“STOP OH GOD STOP HENRY STOP OH GOD”
My blood turned to ice. I stared at the parrot, my heart hammering in my chest. What, exactly, happened here? What is she repeating?
I decided to call my parents. But they didn’t seem to share my level of concern. “Your Aunt Sheila had a parrot,” my dad said. “That thing would pick up all kinds of crazy words. Movies, phone conversations… it’d scream, say the f-word, everything. I wouldn’t worry, Abbi. Especially with Raquel leaving him and all… they probably had some huge fights the parrot picked up on. I wouldn’t be surprised if it got worse.”
And he was right. Over the course of the next hour, Snickers continued to repeat “stop” and “Henry,” but also said a variety of other things, from curses to pleasantries to movie quotes. “FUCK YOU.” “I’LL BE BACK.” “HOW ARE YOU TODAY?” “COMMENT ALLEZ-VOUS?”
Finally, around ten o’clock, I started getting ready to leave. Threw my notebook in my backpack, switched off the lights, and headed for the door. “Goodbye Snickers,” I called out into the darkness. Then I reached for the doorknob—
“PUT THE KNIFE DOWN.”
I froze in my tracks.
I couldn’t see Snickers anymore. But I could hear her, rustling about in her cage. Talons clacking against the metal rails, feathers flapping in the silence. Maybe she’s just quoting another movie. Maybe she’s—
“PUT THE KNIFE DOWN HENRY,” the bird repeated.
My heart dropped.
“STOP OH GOD STOP OH GOD.”
Snickers was agitated. I could hear her feathers hitting the metal rails of her cage as she flapped her wings. Thunk—she hopped back and forth, perch to perch, as she clicked her beak erratically.
“STOP OH GOD STOP.”
I stood there for a long time. Seconds stretched into minutes. But she didn’t say anything more. Just clicked and whistled and flapped around in her cage.
I flicked the lights back on, dropped my backpack on the floor, and made a beeline for the Johnsons’ bedroom.
Henry was very clear with his instructions. I wasn’t supposed to enter any of the bedrooms or the basement. I was supposed to stay on the main level, no matter what.
But I climbed the stairs anyway. After looking around, I found their bedroom. It was neat and tidy, the burgundy bedspread laying smoothly over the mattress. I walked around, my heart hammering, hoping what I was imagining wasn’t true.
But it was.
Because in their closet, I found a small box. A small box containing Raquel Johnson’s wallet… and drivers license.
I made my way back down the stairs, my legs shaking. Snickers looked at me curiously from her cage. I turned out the lights, locked the door, and hurried down the sidewalk. As soon as I get home, I’m calling the cops. As soon as I—
Ping.
I pulled out my phone to see a text.
From Henry Johnson.
I asked you not to enter the bedroom.
I whipped around. But the dark sidewalk extended behind me, totally empty. How did he… Oh. A camera. Of course. I broke into a run towards my parents’ house, at the corner. Almost there—
Ping.
I know what you saw.
I sprinted harder, faster. My feet slapped against the pavement. Almost there—
Ping.
I didn’t pull out my phone. Didn’t stop until I was locked safely in my parents’ house. Then, finally, I read the text that he sent.
If you tell anyone else, you will pay.
***
I didn’t listen. I called the police. And after a thorough search of his house, they found something horrible.
Raquel’s body, in the freezer in the basement.
Henry was trying to flee town, but get a head start by making it look like he was just going on vacation. So he hired me to housesit. I don’t think he realized Snickers might repeat what she heard that night.
And sometimes, I wonder, if Snickers knew more than she let on. Because, apparently, she was Raquel’s pet. From before they were even married.
Maybe she wasn’t mindlessly repeating.
Maybe she was trying to get justice for Raquel.

2023.06.04 08:15 BlairDaniels I babysat a parrot. It said some… disturbing… things.

2023.06.04 05:00 Not_sure_what_to_us3 How fast will a 30 lb thrust move a 14 foot v hull?
I know it’s a somewhat loaded question, but I’m just curious. I just bought a 14’ aluminum v hull, bare bones as hell. I don’t have an outboard yet,but I have a 30 lb minn kota. I know I won’t be going all that fast, but do you think it’s a decent substitute until I get an outboard? I keep finding 2.5 and 3 hp outboards in my price range but I feel like this option should tide me over until I can save up enough for what I want, which is a 15.

2023.06.04 04:54 ImThatWrestlingGuy FBE P.U.R.E - Book Forbidden Door II - Exeunt
Pre-Show
Orange Cassidy vs Minoru Suzuki
To open the long-awaited sequel to the highly successful Forbidden Door, Sir Freshly Squeezed takes on Murder Grandpa in arguably the most anticipated dream match on the card. Introducing Suzuki to his apathetic style, Cassidy immediately attracted violence from the unimpressed Minoru, yet as the bout progressed, Cassidy started to come into his own, bringing some true offence of his own, only for Suzuki to inevitably put him away with a brutal Piledriver.
Hiromu Takahashi (c) vs Darby Allin – IWGP Jr Heavyweight Championship
Running at 100mph and never slowing down, Takahashi and Allin started the match with a bang, immediately trading fast-paced offence with a distinct disregard for their wellbeing. Their high-octane bout continued to amaze the audience with twists and turns as both men wrestled for the upper hand, but ultimately Hiromu was able to stop Darby dead in his tracks to retain.
Main Card
Bryan Danielson vs Kota Ibushi
To open the main card, Kota Ibushi and Bryan Danielson prepared to go to war in a continuation of The Golden Elite’s feud with the BCC. The pair tested the waters to begin, trading reversals and submission attempts before both men gave up and resorted to violent strikes, a brutal encounter ensuing after. Following a 30-minute clinic with Kota and Bryan pulling out all the stops, Ibushi was able to counter a Busaiku and land a Kamigoye to silence Danielson.
Toni Storm vs Mayu Iwatani – Champion vs Champion
With The Outsiders ruling over AEW with an iron fist ever since Toni Storm’s title win at Double or Nothing, her dominance was about to be challenged by the top champion in Japan, Mayu Iwatani. Mixing their different styles together in a fluid clash of techniques, Storm and Iwatani proved why they’re the ace of their respective brands, with Storm asserting herself as the superior champion over Mayu to stand tall.
The House of Black (c) vs Los Ingobernables De Japon – AEW Trios Championship
On one side: the unstoppable force of Malakai Black, Brody King, and Buddy Matthews. On the other: the legendary NJPW faction represented tonight by Tetsuya Naito, Shingo Takagi, and BUSHI. Clashing in a flurry of styles, the two trios went all out with rarely any tags and non-stop action, and despite their best attempts, LIJ was unable to put away the undisputed top trio in the world, a Dante’s Inferno signalling the end for them.
Jay White vs KENTA
With tensions within Bullet Club rising as its supposed leader abandoned their Japanese unit to start his own subgroup, the upcoming cross-promotional super card acted as an opportunity for KENTA to confront Jay White, Jay leaving KENTA laying after a Blade Runner as his response. And at the show, KENTA fell to a similar fate after a gruelling bout between them, White standing tall over his former stablemate.
Thunder Rosa vs Mercedes Mone
Returning after a short hiatus from injury, Mercedes Mone wanted a certain Thunder Rosa for Forbidden Door, and they made sure to live up to the expectations of their dream clash, having a fiery encounter complete with close submission finishes and near falls. Yet with both of her recent championship failures fresh in her memory, Mercedes went all in to get a win here, beating Thunder Rosa after a red-hot match.
Jon Moxley vs Katsuyori Shibata
Because we all need this in our life. The two hardest-hitting fighters in the business going fist to fist. Shibata’s technical prowess and sharp strike combinations melded beautifully with Jon’s brutal offence and brawler-esque style, the two having a real fight feel to their encounter. And after near fall after near fall, Mox was forced to resort to submissions in order to put away Shibata, choking him out with a Bulldog Choke in an impressive victory for The Death Rider.
Aussie Open (c) vs FTR vs The Young Bucks – IWGP Heavyweight Tag Team Championship
The hottest tag team in the world currently in Aussie Open called out the best AEW has to offer and were met by two former opponents: FTR and The Young Bucks, the two AEW teams already having a rivalry of their own. All 6 men involved took advantage of the Triple Threat rules, with 3 men always competing in fast-paced and dynamic action. And with crazy spots keeping the crowd on the edge of their seats the whole time, one final Coriolis saw Aussie Open retain over the two legendary tag teams.
MJF (c) vs Hiroshi Tanahashi – AEW World Championship
Wanting to add to his already extensive list of former challengers, MJF called out the Ace of NJPW, knowing a win over Horseshoe would cement him as a true force to be feared. Putting his title on the line, the extremes of light and dark; good and evil; Tanahashi and MJF had a tense and dramatic back-and-forth encounter, with MJF using any opportunity he got to try to cheat a win, but Tanahashi countered his attempts, getting insanely close call after insanely close call. Yet it wouldn’t be enough, with MJF low-blowing Tanahashi out of the ref’s sight and stealing a win over the Ace.
CM Punk vs Kazuchika Okada
With a certain rematch going on last, this huge dream bout was forced to be the penultimate clash of the night as CM Punk took on Kazuchika Okada in a match that fans had been wanting for decades. Punk’s new heel alignment was reflected in his offence, juxtaposed against Okada’s pure excellence, and the two legendary figures traded big moves after big moves with their finishers being hyped up throughout the match, ending in a singular GTS putting away Okada.
Kenny Omega (c) vs Will Ospreay – IWGP United States Championship
You all know how this one goes. Going to war a second time, Ospreay refused to be brutalised like last time, fighting with a violent burning passion against the final boss Omega, and after another high-octane classic, Will landed a One-Winged Angel and Stormbreaker to finally win!

2023.06.04 03:22 OldPolishProverb Things were better off than I had feared
Deep in the bowels of the high command and intelligence center, Sub-commander Flick approached his most honorable battle organizer, grand master, supreme leader, General Tak. He had updated information from the fleet. He approached the war room in the center of the most secure military facility on the planet.
“Good news sir, I have reports from “Talon” task force. As predicted, they are pushing the human fleet back out of the sector. Everything is going according exactly to your plan.”
“Exactly your say? No unexpected problems?”
“Yes sir, nothing unforeseen. Everything is going exactly to the plan you laid out.”
For some reason the general just scowled as he read the details on the data pad that Flick and given him. He looked at the maps, charts, reports and the holotanks displaying the war’s progress.
He quickly snapped out of his scowl. He barked, “Xuriel! Ganeth! Mok! Give me your summaries on the progress of battle groups “Claw, Pincer and Stinger.”
“Claw is progressing according to plan. No surprises. Everything is on schedule.” said Xuriel.
“Pincer is reporting that all is well and on on schedule. Minimal casualties.” said Ganeth.
“Stinger says that they are on their way to completion of their mission. Everything is working to plan.” said Mok.
Surprisingly, this only made the general more dower.
Flick didn’t understand. He had to know.
“General, I don’t understand. Is something wrong? Everything is going according to the plan you designed. You should be happy that you things are going so well.”
“It’s not the war plan Flick, it’s the humans.”
“I don’t follow sir.” said Flick.
“I am assuming you don’t know any humans. I mean on a personal level.”
The General continued, “I have interacted with humans. I have walked among them. I have talked to them. Seen their homes, their schools, their places of business. I have been welcomed into their homes and dined with them.”
“When our leaders were deciding to declare this war I argued against it. I told them it was a very bad idea to engage them. My loyalty was then called into question and I was told to do my duty. So I left to plan the campaign.”
“But it is what I know of humans that is the problem. They can be extremely passionate and individualistic, to the point of warring against each other. But they will put all their differences aside when threatened by an outside force.” He paused, “Such as us.”
“When they are forced into a corner is when they are at their most dangerous.”
“One of the biggest thing I took away from my observation of them is their imagination. Give a dozen of them a them a problem and they will be able to come up with a dozen solutions. Some of them are crazy and impractical but would theoretically work none the less. Usually the most practical will be the one that is used. And don’t tell them something is impossible. They take that as a challenge.”
“They have an saying, The difficult we do immediately, the impossible just takes a little longer.”
“That motto is nagging at me. The fact that the humans are responding to our engagements in the exact way we want them to. Yes we are winning, but they should be trying something that we had not thought of. We should be experiencing aberrations in the battle plans! Unexpected outcomes! Unknown variables should be coming into play!”
“Those crazy war apes should be doing something unexpected! Something radical! Something insane! They are up to something and we can’t see what it is!”
Flick paused. Deep in thought. Then he spoke.
“General.” Flick said, “Please do not underestimate yourself. Let me reassure you that your battle plan is ingenious. You planned for every contingency. All variables. It is a brilliant plan. Your knowledge of the humans was invaluable. Things are going well because of it. We are wining. They are routed. They scattered when they saw us coming. The war has all but been won. It’s over for the humans.”
As if on cue, the entire facility shook, heavily. The power went out. Emergency lighting came on flickered, and then went out. Another shock hit. The facility started to collapse. There was yelling, screaming, confusion.
Flick was bleeding as he picked himself off the floor. He quickly realized what was happening. “But this is impossible! We are too far behind the lines! We are to entrenched! To fortified! We are too heavily defended!”
“What part of insane war ape didn’t you understand?” said the general with a wry smile. He had been waiting for something like this, unfortunately. They didn’t disappoint him after all he thought, as the next wave hit and everything went to black.

2023.06.04 02:22 Masoneeeer My first post on here. Claws of Creation AU prologue
??? ???????, seven years before the scorching
Silence
Silence was gathering fruit in a field of violet grass. He was pulling one of the bulbous pods off of its stalk when he heard a deep tearing noise behind him which made his light gray spines stand on their end. When he turned around, he saw what looked like a dragon-sized hole ripped out of the air. On the other side of the anomaly was a mountainous landscape under a starry sky, dominated by three moons. Didn’t they say the overworld only had one moon, he thought as he inspected the rift closer. He noted that the plants on the other side were all green compared to the purple and blue ones he was used to.
Growing curious, Silence stuck a talon through, and was immediately pulled through as if by a rope. He crashed onto the ground and heard a deafening crack, turning around to find the portal nowhere to be seen. Well… this is strange, he thought, hopefully I can get back home. He prepared himself for the sinking feeling that comes with instantly traveling across space, but it never came. That's weird, he thought as he pulled an obsidian rod from his satchel, hopefully there is someone out here that can help. Let's see if I remember the words.
Focusing on the gem-coated rod, he spoke, “Locate Kin.” But nothing happened while he continued feeling the strange foreignness of the world around him.
“Oh right, locate dragon,” Silence said, remembering the command phrase. Suddenly, a power rushed out of him, while the rod in his talons snapped towards a location in the distance and gained a faint purple shimmer. Smiling to himself, the black-scaled dragon flew off to find whoever his magic found.
...
Future night kingdom, four years after the scorching
Celestial
Celestial was standing on a hill with four other dragons, with a crowd of hundreds of diverse dragons gathered at the bottom. His parents, Legend and Silence, were the center of the crowd’s attention; Legend was capturing the crowd with a speech about banding together to prevent further occurrences of the events four years ago, while Silence was trying to mask his eternal headache which was worsened by all the cheering. Meanwhile his brother Timeweaver was staring blankly at the mountain in the distance, focused on the future that was currently invading his eyes. Last of all Reaper, the youngest brother, was bombarding Celestial with questions about what was happening.
“What’s Mom talking about? Why there lots of other dragons?” Reaper asked breathlessly.
“She’s gathering everyone into a community so that scavengers can’t steal our eggs, like they did to me,” Celestial explained, observing each member of the crowd with interest.
Reaper continued with the questions, “How we keep scaverger from stealing eggs?”
“If everyone is together, then the scavengers will be scared away and we can also keep everyone’s eggs in one easy to defend place,” Celestial replied, now choosing to tune his brother out by searching for the timeline that caught Timeweaver’s attention. He envisioned a large courtyard where the crowd is now standing, a castle, a place of learning, a crater, but nothing involving the mountain range that blocked off the peninsula.
What did you find this time, He thought at Timeweaver, watching as his brother’s eyes were called back to here and now.
Skeletons littering the mountain, and a cloud of black dragons, Timeweaver thought, scratching at one of his blue teardrop scales and turning to look at the crowd.
Very creepy. So is this future real or is it made up like that magic ice wall of death you told me about.
This is real, as is the ice wall, which you would know if you used your foresight outside of guessing my hallucinations.
I prefer to live now and plan for later, anyways I think mother is finishing her speech, Celestial thought, turning back to watch the crowd and ending a short-lived mental argument.
“WE ARE THE NIGHT KINGDOM, WE ARE THE NIGHTWINGS,” the pitch black dragoness yelled.
“ALL HAIL QUEEN LEGEND,” the crowd cheered. As everyone bowed down to Legend and Silence, Celestial felt a strange sensation that felt entirely unfamiliar, but he brushed it off as feeling the mass euphoria of the crowd.

In the beginning,
u/SpacePaladin15 created the Nature of Predators. The Nature of Predators was without form and void, and darkness was upon the face of the screen; and the Spirit of Spacepaladin15 was moving over the face of the paragraphs. And Spacepaladin15 said, "Let there be carnivores"; and there were carnivores. And Spacepaladin15 saw that the carnivores were good; and Spacepaladin15 separated the carnivores from the herbivores. Spacepaladin called the carnivores Predators, and the herbivores he called Prey. And there were packs and there were herds, one chapter.

Memory transcription subject: Führer Erik Von Koch of the Menschenreich
Date [standardized human time]: May 6, 2142
I opened my eyes as the definitive clacking of heels grew ever closer to the threshold of my dressing room. Looking straight ahead, I silently observed the
untertier-servants in the mirror while they prepared me for the long day ahead of me. The declawed gojid filing my right hand dedicated itself to its work, most likely to intentionally avoid eye contact. To my left, a violet-colored krakotl with a liberally clipped beak brushed the tangles out of my long golden hair while shivering slightly upon noticing my gaze in the reflection. Below me crouched in front of my seat underneath the table was my servant-pet, Jeko, shining my boots. The young little venlil noticed me looking down at him and began beaming with obvious enjoyment, his tail wagging and ears twitching adorably. Unlike the others, this animal did not fear me, for I had been raising him since he was just a little mewling pup.
"Am I doing a good job, master? Are your boots shiny enough?" he asked with an innocent head tilt.
Looking down at my boots, I could see a glint in the glossy surface, even whilst concealed by the poor lighting. I couldn't help but respond with a slight smile and reach down with my free hand to stroke his creamy fur. he pushed his head back against the touch with his bestial eyes closed.
"You've done such a great job, my little lamb-chop! You're already becoming such a good little helper, aren't you?"
Jeko merely giggled, as the other servants continued their work with what seemed to be a newfound sense of morbid awkwardness. It was obvious that the other
untertiere found the concept of pets to be quite disturbing. Why this is, exactly, very few knew the truth. Some like to theorize it stems from some form of contempt for the beasts who willingly fawn to their superiors, resulting in some crude sense of pride being wounded in the process of watching one of their own gleefully lower themself to such a level. But I personally think that gives them a bit too much credit and pertain to a different explanation; that it is a sense of envy rather than contempt that jars them so. Perhaps they look upon those blissfully ignorant eyes and wish they too could experience such shameless joy. Or perhaps they simply notice the obvious preferential treatment given to them by their masters and feel envious. Either way, I've always found it quite amusing, which is why I had begun letting Jeko chip in during my morning routine.
"My Führer, you've been personally requested at your office in the Volkshalle with due haste... It's the hotline," my secretary informed me at the door.
I looked up at the short-haired woman with a momentary surprise. "Already? But I haven't even had breakfast yet. Shit... Alright, alright... I'll be out in a second... Wrap it up, you animals!"
I should've expected this much. After what I had..
ahem,
failed to notice what Jägermeister Wilson just did in this latest campaign on the spur-distal front, I knew it was only a matter of time before I had Chief President Calamari Killjoy crawling up my ass. swivelling my chair around I promptly stood up, taking one last peak in the mirror to adjust my uniform and inspect the work of my servants. Seeing that it was adequate enough for the rushed job, I shooed the creatures away to their other tasks while bounding towards the hall. Reaching the end of my living quarters, two guards on the other side of the double doors greeted me in salute as I pushed the doors open. Continuing past them, I marched through the dark cryptoporticus lined with even more saluting guards until the hallway opened up into the ever-impressive dome of the Volkshalle, a sight that never grew old. I couldn't help but stop and stare at and admire the massive hall yet again for a few seconds of my valuable time before I continued on my way. A flight of beautifully detailed marbled stairs and a couple more turns later and I found myself pushing past the guards of the Führer's office before they could even properly salute me. Quickly closing the door behind me and locking it shut, I scanned the perimeter of the office, and noticing I was entirely alone and there was nothing out of place, I took a deep breath and calmly walked over to the holo screen waiting for me at the end of the massive table. Sitting myself down at the head of the table, the iconic crimson insignia of the Menschenreich and two golden statues of the great eagle clutching its talons upon the globe stood gloriously behind my visage. Steeling myself, I let out a sigh and pushed the "accept" button on the video chat. The screen lit up and momentarily flashed with white before a fuzzy image of an all too familiar hideous blue beast buffered and cleared up.
"Von Koch? Von Koch? There you are!" Gurgled out the oversized amphibian-mollusk thing. Her bulbous protruding eyes squinted with irritation and her generous width was hugged by crossed tentacles. "Have you any idea how long I've been waiting for you to stalk your way out of your lair!?"
Instead of yelling back, I politely bore my teeth at her, being sure to show off my slightly larger than average canines. "And a good morning to you too, Miss Universe. Or is it evening on your hemisphere of Aafa? Anyway, long time no see! Tell me, how have things been faring on the.. fairer side of space?"
Chief Lellaete scoffed at my nonchalant demeanor and begin rapidly flicking through her screen with a tendril. "You tell me."
Eventually, video footage of the glorious fall of the dossur homeworld, the triumphant victory of mankind over the foul krakotl-led defense fleet that tried to vainly defend it, and finally live feed of the beginning stages of the glassing of the planet all appeared before me.
"What's the problem? Just looks like business as usual to me..." I smirked.
Gritting her teeth, her blue face seemed to take a hue of purple, which was both impressive and horrifying as I never realized kolshians could do that. "The problem is that you've overextended by tens of lightyears more than we agreed to! You said this campaign would just be a 'little expansion of necessity.' This does not look very 'little' to me!"
"Oh come on, thirty light-years can't be that big. Not for you guys, at least. Our territory is still nowhere near a single core world. I think you're blowing this a bit out of proportion. What value did the dossur ever offer to the Federation, anyways?"
"One of your hunter misers or whatever the hell you call them just bombed four more homeworlds into shambles within the last eight months! You predators are out of line! This wasn't part of the agreement! Back off now or you will face the wrath of Aafa in full strength!"
Wincing and sucking in air between my teeth, I held out my arms and presented my palms in a surrendering manner. "Alright, alright... Listen, you know how human nature is. We sometimes get a bit ahead of ourselves. Moreover, keeping up morale is very important for us, and out of all my Jägermeisters, Wilson knows this best. That's just how he is. Always going for the moral victory and whatnot..."
I trailed off as I noticed Lellaete's face was somehow an even more violet shade of purple than it was before. Seeking to defuse the situation before she blew her gasket, I continued just before she could open her wide mouth.
"That being said, I realize he has been perhaps a bit.. too zealous in his duties. So all you have to do is send an extermination fleet or two to the other side of the front and I'll have the perfect reason to pull him off and tell him to defend. Now isn't that awfully convenient for the little rodents? Then, we can allll take a deep breath and settle down for some more casual cattle raiding and predator exterminations for the next few years with our campaign declared a partial success and your extermination fleets celebrating another sobering pyrrhic victory to put the fear of predators into them. How does that sound to you, Chief?"
The kolshian bowed her head and squinted her eyes at me in tense silence before straightening back up with a sudden calm that was a bit unnerving even to me. "Very well. But we will also be taking back the Sethmokin homeworld."
dammit, that was the one I wanted to keep! The unusually low gravity of the Sethmokin homeworld Ithilus combined with its mild temperature and mineral-rich crust made it an ideal place for a space elevator supported industrial megacenter. The kolshians clearly knew this too, as evidenced by Chief Lellaete singling it out and prying it from my hands with no hint of subtly whatsoever. Unfortunately, they seem to be slowly catching on to my gradual ramping up of industry. Not wanting to push my luck any further, I had no choice but to concede with what I had already gotten, lest the "predator-prey agreement" falls apart.
"Excellent!" I beamed at the frowning slimy herbivore as the pads of my digits pressed together. "I'm glad we could settle this issue peacefully."
"Stay in line, Von Koch. We never had to use the hotline with your predecessors nearly as much as with
you. We can't have things looking too dire, or too relaxed. The Federation needs a predator, just as you need prey."
"Yes, yes, I understand, the
Ewigkeitskrieg must continue forever and all that..."
"
Hmph! Good to know even a beast as unruly as yourself can see reason."
I bite my tongue, instead shutting my eyes and spotting a closed-mouth smile in an exaggeratedly polite manner before reaching over to terminate the call. If I had to spend one more moment speaking to this detestable thing I might just pop a cyanide pill into my mouth. At the very least, nothing too problematic or convoluted happened to complicate future plans.
"Well, if that will be all then, don't hesitate to call again, Chief! After all, I know how you herd animals can get rather needy after all soo.." I chirped at my greatest adversary and accomplice.
"Wait. There is one more thing I need to tell you."
My finger which hovered over the "end" button strained and slowly curled into a white-knuckled fist.
Now what could it possibly be, my ectolan friend?" I answered, still smiling with my clenched fist above the holo pad surface.
"You humans are no longer alone. There's another predator race in the galaxy."
The awkward smile slowly dissipated from my face and my eyes opened up to gaze at the kolshian. I had to be sure I was hearing things right.
"
What?"
"You heard me. We believe there is now a second predator race in the galaxy. One that is even more carnivorous than you, in fact, and they have just developed faster-than-light travel."
"
How?" Was all I could croak out of my slacked jaw.
"My, such a prey-like look on your face!" snickered Chief Lellaete. "But if you must know, it was... Well, we are equally shocked, really. The farsul discovered them and spent decades observing them, as they usually do with primitives. They told us they destroyed themselves in their world's fourth world war after developing the atomic bomb about three hundred years ago. But it seems they either somehow survived nuclear armageddon or the armageddon part never happened in the first place. And before you ask, yes, that is all the Farsul States will tell us. A simple, careless error on their part for failing to confirm their extinction..."
I sat there completely stunned into silence.
Is it really true? After all these years of being alone, there is finally a second race of predators? Of people? Of
übertiere?
The kolshian took my silence as an invitation to continue elaborating. "They call themselves the arxur, and their existence has already begun muddying up the waters."
"What do you mean?" I asked.
"What I mean is that they have only been spacefaring for two months, and already they have allied with the thafki and convinced them to seemingly betray the Federation.
"Th-they allied with the prey!?"
"It's disgusting, I know, but it seems to be the truth. Our kinds are meant to be in eternal opposition. No one was around to give them the memo, apparently." Lellaete answered monotonously.
Bringing a palm to my temple and resting the elbow on the armrest, my mind began racing before a far more pressing matter revealed itself. "And why are you telling me all this, exactly?" My eyes narrowed.
"Because I don't trust a single cube in your icebox, Von Koch. I'm telling you right now so that when your kind inevitably encounters them, you can't pull anything funny and try to feign ignorance, as you already seem to be in the habit of doing. All I'm asking is that you let the Federation handle this for now. We will get them to the right way of thinking after we get them under control.
Then you can finally have your first official ally once you 'save' them from us. Or eat them. Or throw them into gas chambers. We don't really care at that point; you can do whatever you want with them. Congratulations to mankind for finally finding a species as corrupted and ghastly as yourself."
I simply stared at the kolshian unabated. "And what will happen if they do not come to see '
our way', exactly?"
The Federation leader leaned in, and a strange glint seemed to catch in her large, horizontally pupiled eyes that made me want to shutter. "I think you know very well the answer to that question,
Führer."
I scoffed. "What an awfully predatory look on your face... Fine, I can see you already have the reins on the situation then, but the same goes for you as well; mess things up and it will ruin everything!"
The kolshian narrowed her eyes with conceit. "
Heh. Perhaps we aren't so different from each other after all."
Terminating the call before I could rebuke that heinous conjecture, I finally let my arms slump down into my sides. This is why I despised the herbivores so much, and the kolshians seventy seven fold.
"
Filthy untertier..."
Getting up from my chair, I slowly meandered over to the Wall of Führers, and starting from my own portrait, I gazed at each and every one, mostly lost in my own thoughts, until finally I rested my eyes directly upon the first and stopped.
Surely this isn't what he wanted the Reich to become. Although it was true that I along with every other previous Führer after the Founder was a willing accomplice to the
Ewigkeitskrieg between the Federation and the Menschenreich, deep down, it truly made me sick to my stomach working with those squid-frogs. Supposedly, the Founder despised the xenos and their intervention of Earth from the moment they made first contact, purely on principle, and this was rightfully so. For the sapient herbivore is nothing more than a husk, a mindless creature that can act only upon instinct. Their so-called 'higher intelligence' is nothing more than a mere slave to these impulses, and thus does the herbivore-folk seek to do nothing but destroy and defile the ecosystem that gave life to them by burning away any trace of predation or aggression in sight. Feeling safe at last from the natural order they so despise, they begin to scour their planets like a ravenous locust swarm. They proceed to breed profusely until their numbers swell into innumerable hordes and then, upon reaching and overshooting the carrying capacity of their planet, the herd moves on to new worlds, so that they might do the same there. Even beasts who wallow in the mud at the very least know how to live in harmony with nature and the universe at large, but the herbivore xeno is incapable of this. This is why they are less than animals. This is why they are the
untertier. And out of all the hideously vile and contemptible
untertiere which corrupt this galaxy like a foulest cancer, none are so hypocritical, deceitful, and subversive as the kolshian scum. Chillingly intelligent and calculating, they ofttimes liken themselves to true persons, perhaps to the point of deceiving even themselves. But truly, one needs only to look upon their 'works' to see that in the end, they too are nothing but slaves to the urges of the untertier. Chief Lellaete, she, no,
it is but a puppet master of the lesser
untertiere with it itself gleefully serving the master that is fear and cowardice.
But these new predators, if things are true as the kolshians say, are different. They may finally be the second known race of
übertiere in the entire galaxy. And here are the ectolan scum, already conspiring against them. They have always been meddling in everything, long before they irrevocably ruined the Earth with their tampering, and if something is not done about it, they will continue to do so long after we are gone. That is why I want more for the Menschenreich than this eternal conspiracy. Why I want an end to the
Ewigkeitskrieg. My predecessors were wise, and knowing that directly going against the will of the Federation was suicide, began the
Ewigkeitskrieg with them. But sometime during this war without an end, they grew weak. Cowardly. Complacent. But I hunger for more! For what is the meaning behind a thousand-year Reich if nothing is ever accomplished in that millennium? How can mankind ever call itself the
übertier if it does nothing but sit in eternal stagnation? No, the eternity we have is but a farce. But one day, this will change, for I will bring about the end of eternity, and in its wake, I shall construct a true eternity, one of prosperity, glory, and pride for all of humanity forever! And this advent of a second race of predators may yet prove an opportunity! This could be the stir in the pot I've been waiting for! The universe has presented me with a grand question concerning the kolshian-puppeted Federation, and
I have the final solution! Do you hear that, Chief Lellaete? I will continue to play your little "
predator and prey" game for the time being... But soon, very soon, with the help of these "arxur", I shall finally bring about the
Viecherdämmerung! And just as the Founding Führer once united the Earth and cleansed it of all the degenerate, savage, and subversive
untermensch, so too will I cleanse the galaxy of the
untertier, so that the glory of the Menschenreich shall spread to every star, shining like a beacon in the darkness of the void of space for ten thousand years!

2023.06.03 22:37 Tatertots1911 Looking for a small boat, need advice.
Been looking to try out a boat for fishing. i live about .5 miles from a boat dock to get on the Willamette river in Oregon. Was think about picking up a John boat off face book market for around $500. i have a brand new Minn Kota Endura C2 30 that i can slap on it to just put around with. What should i be looking for when/if i go to look at one for sale? most of them have lost titles/reg but from a little research it will cost me about $75 for a new title.

Autumn 4986, 16 Aoimoth Shon and Nangran hobbled their horses at the base of a steep hill deep in the woods north of Hamerfoss. They'd left at fourth bell, before any of the other Squires had woken for their morning run, and it had still taken them hours of riding through narrow trails to reach this place. At least they hadn't run into any monsters. The snow that had dusted the landscape during the night lay thick here, crunching underfoot and occasionally flopping noisily to either side as it fell from the tall evergreen branches.
Shon adjusted the strap of his sword across his chest and reached his left hand back to brush shaking fingers over its hilt. He'd been glad when the Paladins insisted he take it with him. To them, it marked Shon as a representative of Hengist and the Temple. To Shon, it was a sign of his hard work and resolve. Having it was a comfort.
Nangran started up the hill, and Shon hurried to follow. The smith hadn’t spoken a word since they set out, not even to try and ease Shon’s anxiety, for which Shon was grateful. Master Daunas had tried to sound confident as Shon saddled his borrowed horse, and The Major General had offered him encouragement as they mounted. Neither realized how much that just drove home the desperation of the situation in Shon’s mind.
The smith pulled his heavy cloak tighter, and Shon looked away. He hadn’t bothered to wear his cloak. He'd never really felt chilled in the winter like others seemed to. Now that he knew why, he wished he had. Cold continued to swirl around him, enhanced by his worries. If he could just block those emotions, the power would never have been a problem to begin with.
The trees thinned the higher they climbed, disappearing almost entirely as they crested the top of the hill. The clearing looked over the treetops, offering an unimpeded view of the horizon. Forest all around, with flatland to the south and rocky mountain peaks to the north. Only a handful of small trees grew in the clearing, and in the middle stood a little ramshackle hut only slightly larger than an outhouse.
Nangran threw his arm out, stopping Shon from walking past him, "Don't touch anything. And don't be surprised if he says no right off."
Shon nodded, trying to swallow down his fear so it wouldn't be seen in his eyes. Dropping his hand, Nangran started forward again, finishing, "Be honest, but not insulting." The instructions, -or perhaps advice?- seemed like common courtesy, which made Shon wonder why quiet Nangran had bothered to say anything.
As they drew closer to the little shack, Shon could make out a sign on the door. He squinted to read it and had just made out '
No Soliciting' when the door swung open, banging against the wall and sending birds into flight. An old man, so thin he looked like a skeleton with yellow skin pulled tight across its bones, stormed out. Wearing nothing but a loincloth, he was shaking a thick stick at them that glinted with red rubies in the low autumn light.
"I already paid my dues for this decade! So you can take your request and shove it-" Shon’s hand instinctively reached for his sword, but Nangran just crossed his arms over his barrel chest. The old -virtually naked- man stopped yelling mid-rant and lifted one shriveled arm to shade his eyes as he squinted at them, "Eh? Flintchest, what’re you doing way out here with a blasted mage in tow?"
Rather than answer, Nangran started forward again, he didn't much care for talking, let alone shouting. Looking from Nangran to the loincloth man, Shon slowly lowered his arm, but still took position to the left and just behind the Smith as they approached the crazy man with the glittering club.
"No mage." Nangran said as he came right up to the strange old man, "Squire." he glanced over his shoulder at Shon and finished, "Sorcerer."
The old man spat on the ground and moved his squint to Shon. Running his eyes from the top of his black head to the tip of his polished boots and back, exaggerating the movement before he stopped at the Squire’s cold blue eyes.
He spat again, then barked "Where's your familiar?" scanning first the ground at Shon's feet then the sky above his head.
Shon blinked at him, furrowing his brow in confusion at the question. The mage snapped his fingers impatiently, "Your familiar! All Sorcerers have a familiar."
Nangran came to his rescue, "Just woke last night," he said shortly.
The mage spat again but didn't argue, "Well, come in then." Shon looked sideways at Nangran, but the Smith had already begun following the skinny old man into the shack. Shon hurried to catch up.
Inside, Shon's eyes were assaulted with a sparkling rainbow of colors. The room they'd entered was considerably larger than the outside would suggest, with plush carpet and a stuffed high-back armchair in front of a blazing fire in the opposite wall. Shelves full of exotic plants, glowing glass jars, and glittering stones filled every available space, reflecting off one another and setting streaks of light to dance on the floor and walls like sun rays through crystal.
There was too much to take in, so Shon focused on their host. The old man was slipping into a thick robe of deep purple velvet. He'd hung the club on the wall beside the door, which looked just as decrepit on this side as it had on the outside.
"Make a habit of greeting visitors half-naked and swinging an old fireball wand?" Nangran asked as he slipped out of his cloak.
"Keeps the conversations short." the old man replied tersely, tying his belt and turning to his guests. With boney knuckles on boney hips and glare firmly planted on his wrinkled face, he snapped, "Don't bother getting comfortable, Flintchest; you'll be leaving soon enough."
The Smith ignored him, hanging his cloak on the hook that had presumably held the mage's robe. "Got a favor to ask," he said, but the old man was already shaking his head,
"More like a favor to cash in. That's the only reason you're in here and not smoking in a hole outside."
Nangran ignored the threat and motioned from Shon to the old man and back. "Archmage Ivelm." The mage looked Shon up and down again as Nangran made the introductions, “Squire Shon.”
"Not much longer, I'd say." Ivelm said to Nangran as he finished his second examination, "It's to the Guild with this one. Too much magic." he turned his head and spat in a brass can by the door. It rang out with a loud ‘ting!' and Ivelm sniffed, looking down at Nangran again, "What do you want, Flintchest?"
"Need a seal. So the boy doesn't freeze Hamerfoss more than it already is." the smith crossed his arms, watching the mage and somehow still seeming completely at ease.
"Eh?!" Ivelm exclaimed, leaning far forward. Shon had to try hard not to crinkle his nose as the old man brought his face close enough that Shon could smell Ivelm's breath. Garlic, the mage ate a
lot of garlic…
"So… you don't want to be a mage, do you?" he demanded, glaring down his nose at him. Shon shook his head and would have answered with a 'no ser.' except the mage continued, "Rather swing around some hunk of metal like a brute?"
Shon blinked stupidly, and Nangran cleared his throat, "Watch what you say about my swords, old man."
Ivelm ignored the smith as soundly as Nangran had ignored the Archmage, and continued to Shon, "The powers of the universe are at your fingertips. Blood blessed with the strength of the elements, and you wanna throw it all away," he threw his arms into the air, still uncomfortably close, "And for what? Some illusion of an honorable death by the sword?"
Shon didn't know what to say. He looked past the affronted mage's face, only an inch from his own, to Nangran. But the smith gave no sign he was going to help. Shon’s future depended on convincing this strange old man, this Archmage, to help…
Shon wasn't the type to try and convince anyone of anything, but the least he could do was explain himself. Shon stepped back from the mage to address him from a more comfortable distance. "I chose to dedicate my life to perfecting my art, and my art is martial combat," he said. Ivelm wrinkled his nose, his mouth twisting as if he were going to spit again, but Shon continued, "magic would be better served in the hands of someone who wants it badly enough to work for it. Like I've worked for my martial skills."
Ivelm leaned away from Shon, his eyebrows lifted into his frizzled gray hair. Shon looked to Nangran, hoping for some sign that this was a good response. The smith smiled from behind the mage.
"Soooo…" Ivelm drew the word out, "You think only those who dedicate themselves to strict study and practice should wield the power of the universe?" he leaned forward again, turning his head and fixing one eye on Shon like a bird. As if trying to catch him in a lie.
Shon nodded, confused, then asked, "Isn't that what it takes to effectively wield magic? Focused study?"
Ivelm didn't answer the question, instead turning his face to examine Shon with the other eye, scanning him up and down yet again. The old man had looked him up and down so much Shon wouldn't be surprised if the next question were about his hair or boots.
But Ivelm didn't ask another question. Instead, he stood straight and spat into the brass can with another ringing 'ting!' "I like this one," he said, turning his back on Shon and facing Nangran, "But it's too much." he shook his head, lifting his hands in helpless surrender, "Too much power, and ice at that. Stubborn element that one. And it's so finicky to block
just elemental magic..."
Ivelm continued talking but Shon heard very little of it. A hole had opened in his gut, and it felt like his heart was racing his stomach to fall into it. But Nangran just rolled his eyes at the mage, interrupting, "Used to be
the name in new magic items... made shackles to hold Archmages." he squinted at Ivelm, who had frozen mid-head shake, "Must've gotten rusty out…"
Ivelm snapped his fingers under the Smith's nose to stop him talking, "The mind does not rust, Flintchest!" he huffed, one bare foot tapping under his robe, "Not like your swords and shriveling muscles." Nangran just stared stubbornly, his thick, muscled arms still crossed over his broad chest.
The mage continued to tap his foot, his nose in the air. But as the silence stretched, Ivelm looked down at the smith, who continued to say nothing. The silent battle of wills ended when Ivelm threw his arms up in disgust and shook a finger under Nangran's nose, nearly hitting it, declaring, "I'll show you. I'll make a gem especially for this lad, and you'll see the mind only continues to grow sharper!"
He spun on his heel back to Shon, who had just made out the smith's returned smile from behind the mage when the old man snapped his fingers in Shon's face, making him jump. "Well, what are you waiting for? Come here so I can take some measurements!" Ivelm swung around again and marched across the room to a large workbench with plants and gems scattered across it. Shon scrambled after him, praying his thanks to Hengist and suddenly feeling light enough to float. His anxieties dropping away and melting like snow in summer.
***
It was already noon, and no one had come to see Her. She jumped up to grab the bars of Her window, pulling Herself up to peak out but seeing nothing but new snow and tree trunks. She was full to bursting with nervous energy, amplifying every sound and sensation. Footsteps sounded outside Her door, and She dropped from the window, sprinting across the room and resting Her ear on the wood.
“Ran, recheck the lab.
Brom, with me.” Archmage Morndancer spoke with his strange alternation between draconic and common as he passed Her door without stopping. She could easily make out the swish of their robes on the stone hall leading away. Three people, Brom, Ran, and Archmage Morndancer. And yet the scurrying of too many feet to be only the two apprentices and Archmage Shaloon, sounded from the floor above. There were strangers in her tower again. Many strangers. Something was happening, something big…
She ran to Her window again, just for something to do, seeking some way to burn off some of the anxiety of not knowing what was going on around her.
A roar from down the hall, a roar of pain, sent ice washing through her veins. She slammed into the door at full speed. Pounding on the wood, She called out, “Brom?! Ran?!” Nothing. Then a yip cut short, followed by barking and yowling.
She shook the handle with both hands, rattling the door on its hinges, “BROM! RAN!” Something was happening to Her treasures, something terrible… The door handle began to glow, the metal warping and sagging as it melted. The knowledge that She would be in more trouble than She had ever been in before was nothing compared to Her terror. She wrenched the handle back with all Her might, splashing molten metal across Her bed, lighting fires that flared in her panic, and sending smoke to curl up to the ceiling.
She didn’t care. She shouldered the door open and ran.
“Red?!” She passed the first open door but couldn’t stop as Ran called out to Her. Reaching Her treasures' room, She tried to stop but slipped, slamming into the ground with a sticky splash. A final whining bark started a buzzing in Her ears as She stared, transfixed, at Her hands. They were painted red. Warm and sticky. The overpowering stench of iron nearly made Her gag as She looked up to see Morndancer toss aside a glittering golden wolf pup, the body flopping limply over the corpse of its mother and siblings.
Her world went red.
***
The last sample was taken care of, but something roared with enough ferocity to shatter glass.
Morndancer's head snapped around in time for him to fall back, shielding his face with his hands as the Firewyrm exploded. White-hot fire engulfed Her and spread out to the stone floor and walls. His robes began to smoke, the new fire protection spells woven into them being overpowered by the sheer ferocity of the blaze.
Brom had no such spells, and he had only managed a single step towards the girl before he fell to the ground, writhing for only a moment before lying still. The Archmage heard Ran scream from the hall before the journeyman stumbled past the door, flailing wildly. Barely discernible as human inside the flames.
The Firewyrm moved towards him, stepping through Brom’s head, turned to ash, and blown up to dance in the air on the same heatwaves causing the girl's hair to wave wildly about Her. She didn't seem to notice, Her face was expressionless and her eyes glowed as red as the scales across Her cheek. Morndancer tried to snap his fingers, but the golden collar around Her neck melted, Her clothes burning off and leaving Her naked and terrible in the flames.
His robe was burning now, and only the pain of that could pull his eyes from the Firewyrm as he pointlessly tried to beat the fires off. He fell back, hitting the wall, which drooped, sagging and dripping molten stone onto his head and face. Then he fell further back, into a gate that opened behind him.
Shaloon pulled him through the portal and into the library three stories up. The Firewyrm roared again and the tower walls shook with the force of it. The gate closed, but Morndancer continued to burn. He could hear screaming. Was it him? Was he screaming? Fire burst up the spiral stairs in the middle of the room, and apprentices, both their own and many sent from the central and western Talon, scrambled about in a panic, some even leaping from the windows.
Shaloon cursed, holding out her hand and summoning her sword again. She had to draw the circle five times before a second gate finally formed, and she dove through it, pulling Morndancer along with her as it quickly closed. An apprentice reached through, and his arm fell at Morndancer’s feet, miles away in the sitting room of his manor back in Smildna.
He laughed. Shaloon slapped him, and he laughed. Ronni, his daughter, burst through the door, her own daughter, only a year old, perched on her hip, and still, he laughed. “What’s wrong?! What happened to him?!” he barely registered his daughter's words and continued to laugh, rolling around on the ground in mirthful madness.
“The Firewyrm She…” Shaloon started, but Morndancer yelled over her in draconic,
“
She is true! She is pure! She is rage! The children will come and raise the grandchildren! We have only to await the coming of those Chosen!” the room faded around him, becoming washed out and gray then finally black as he continued to laugh and shout, “
They take those who slew them and use them to raise themselves anew…”
He couldn’t feel his burns or the hands trying to settle him. He saw only darkness and stars. And the eyes of his Master boring into his soul from the outer planes.
***
Shon couldn't remember ever feeling so drained in his life. He'd been tired before, exhausted even, but it had never felt quite like this. The eccentric Archmage Ivelm had ordered him to 'empty his energy' into stone after stone. Measuring the weight, color, and temperature of each. Making notes in chalk directly on his table and talking to himself. Shon was shocked the first time he saw the smooth rock handed to him change from a translucent white to an onyx as black as his hair, but by the time they'd gone through the twentieth stone, Shon had decided to stop counting.
Ivelm, however, seemed to get more and more excited with each one. Giving Shon reason to suspect the mage may be taking the energy for himself. After what felt like hours, Ivelm finally stoppered the potion he'd mixed with the most recent jewel, glowing a soft pale blue, and stepped back from the workbench, bony hands on bony hips.
"It can be done." Ivelm swiveled to face Nangran, "He's strong, I don’t know how he managed not to manifest until now, but it's all focused in one elemental direction." he rubbed his chin and looked at the ceiling, completely ignoring Shon's arched eyebrow. "It has a bit of divine flavor as well. But I suppose that shouldn't be surprising for a training Paladin." The mage stopped musing and glared down his nose at Nangran, who had made himself comfortable in the oversized wingback chair by the fire, "It will have to be a lot bigger than a piece of jewelry would allow."
The smith just hummed and sipped at his mug.
When had he gotten a mug? Shon looked from one old man to the other. It was apparent Ivelm wanted Nangran to ask him for details, but the ever stoic smith said nothing.
Shon was tired. His limbs felt heavy, and the weight of his simple uniform felt more like platemail. He was just about to ask what the Archmage meant, to hurry them along, when Ivelm threw his hands in the air and said, "You'll need to find somewhere to put it. I would recommend that." he pointed at the hilt of Shon's sword over his shoulder, continuing, "If the lad is insisting on swinging a metal stick around instead of harnessing the ultimate powers of the universe then that same stick might as well sap the power literally as well as figuratively." Shon arched an incredulous eyebrow but Ivelm wasn't paying attention, finishing, "I can get it down to about an inch and a half orb. At the smallest. If you want something different, say so now."
Nangran set his mug on the ground and stood with a grunt and a groan. Shon just wanted to go home and sleep for a week, so when the smith reached for the hilt of his sword for a closer look Shon hardly noticed, until the squat smith jerked it down to eye level. Shon swung his arms like a drowning man and stepped wide to prevent himself from falling over.
"Quit wigglin'," Nangran grumbled, studying the sword's pommel with a professional eye. "One and a half'll do, preferably in a tear…"
The mage snorted and continued to ignore the struggling half crouched Shon, his voice dripping sarcasm as he addressed the smith, "Shall I wrap it in silk for you as well?"
"Na." Nangran let go of the sword, and Shon stood straight, lifting his leg to shake out the knee. "Drop it off when you’re done." the Mage snorted again but didn't counter.
None of them were interested in extending the visit, so Nangran grabbed his heavy cloak and shrugged it on while Shon waited by the door. "It will be at least a fortnight," Ivelm called from his position by the workbench, not about to walk them out.
Nangran grunted his confirmation and opened the battered and decrepit door, letting the wind and early autumn snow blow in on their way out. Shon followed numbly, his eyes unfocused as he walked, and ran right into the much shorter man. Nangran hardly moved as Shon bounced off of him. He was squinting into the distance, one large hand shading his eyes. Shon stared at Nangran for a moment before following the direction of his gaze over the tree line.
Smoke. A LOT of smoke. The black clouds billowed violently into the sky, occasionally lit from below by sparks shot high into the air.
"Elm!" Nangran shouted. Shon had never heard the man call so loudly. The Archmage must have also been shocked because the door to his hut swung open and he stuck his head out to look to either side, eyes wide.
"Flintchest, what?" but he soon saw what, "But, that's the old chemist's tower… What?" he stood in shocked confusion for a heartbeat before turning back into the hut. Shon looked from the shack to Nangran, but before he could say anything, the mage was back, struggling with two long rods, one blue with what looked like waves painted all around, the other black and studded with diamonds.
"Don't just stand there!" Ivelm snapped at the two as he finally managed to slip the blue rod into a sheath at his side. He then pointed the diamond rod at the space between two close-growing trees. Shon heard him say something unintelligible, and one of the diamonds shot out of the tip of the rod to hover between the trees before expanding into a portal.
Beyond the magical gate, Shon could hear the fire roar. It sounded how he imagined the burning hells might sound, but as he followed the two men through, he realized his imagination was tame by comparison.
The smell of burning flesh and hair choked him as they stepped clear of the gate's magic. The heat smashed into them like a wall, and all three brought their arms up to shield their faces. Around them were the charred remains of what looked like humans, their faces buried in the mud as if they'd been trying to run from the blaze. Shon had to swallow the bile that rose in his throat and focused instead on the fire Ivelm had said was a tower.
It was completely engulfed in bright flames of all colors. Squinting through the light, he could see the stone walls melting like wax. The arch of the doorway sagged in the middle, and Shon's eyes went wide. Someone was in there.
He would've had to shout over the roar of the flames, but it didn’t matter; Ivelm was already raising the blue wand, jerking his fingers in strange ways and mouthing words impossible to hear. Water shot out the tip of the wand with the force of a ballista and hissed against the glowing stones.
It wasn't possible. It must be a trick of the flickering flames. But the figure turned its face to them, long hair whipping about as it took steps in their direction.
"Don't just stand there, boy!" Ivelm screamed. "They must have a fire-resist spell; those things don't last forever!"
Nangran grabbed Shon’s upper arm, pulling him a step closer to the fire and down so he could shout in his ear, "Freeze a path."
Shon swallowed. He was so tired, literally drained. He didn't know what to do or how to do it. But the figure in the fire reached out to them only to pull away from a drop of molten rock. Shon fell to his knees, placing his hands on the ground and pleading silently to Hengist. He didn’t know what to do, didn’t know how to control the power. He tried picturing a path of snow between himself and the tower base, concentrating on it until the mental image overlaid the real world, as he did when imagining phantom fighters during practice.
Ice snaked its way from Shon's fingers towards the burning tower along his mental path, powered by the fear that he wouldn't be fast enough to save the person inside. The water from Ivelm's wand helped carve the way, and Shon grunted physically as he struggled to push mentally. His breathing came heavy and ragged. He could feel the fire melting the edges of the ice as if it were a part of him. Still, he fought back and forced it to continue to form into solid sheets moving closer and closer to the figure still trapped in the tower.
Wherever the ice formed solid, it stayed. The fire drawing back from it until, finally, it reached the doorway. He urged the ice to climb up the doorframe, to hold it in place and keep it from falling, from moving at all.
Shon was seeing double. He struggled to focus on the figure and flinched as they stepped onto the frozen path. The ice hissed and melted under their bare unsteady feet, he could feel it... feel
them, their heat, on his ice.
It was a young woman. Or an older girl. She was naked; her clothes burned away by the fire. Her long hair was being blown forward by the heat of the burning tower, obscuring her face. As she moved closer, Shon could make out strange red stripes snaking around her body, standing in stark relief against her pale skin.
Ivelm stepped in front of him then, throwing Nangran's cloak around her shoulders as she crumpled to the ground. Nangran himself knelt beside Shon, resting one massive hand on the Squire's back. "You can stop, lad…" his voice trailed off, and Shon felt an emptiness open in his chest.
No one could have survived that, not if they hadn't already made it to the entrance like the girl. As if to punctuate the thought, Shon managed to focus his eyes only to see the tower's entrance wall fold and collapse in on itself, the stones flowing like soft wax.
