Hi all, I recently got sober as of three days ago and I haven’t been able to sleep since, I can’t tell if I’m having heartburn or heart palpitations or esophageal spasms. I used to drink a liter of vodka or more a day if I was coming home from work. I recently quit my job because I think I’ve connected working in restaurants to drinking to excess, well me at least. I can't sleep, & I'm making it your problem by subjecting you to my insomnia thoughts. Legend of Korra: Book 2 totally references HP Lovecraft. I looked over my list of examples & wondered if I might be reaching, but no, they definitely knew what they were doing when they created Unavaatu. He even has a squid head! To be clear, I'm not saying this is the only influence on Book 2, but the others, like Ghibli films, are much more frequently addressed.
For those who somehow don't know, HP Lovecraft was a 1920s-30s pulp horroscience fiction writer, easily most famous for creating Cthulhu; a giant, vaguely humanoid monster with an octopus for a head who would bring about the end of the world "when the stars are right." Vaatu, of course, fuses with Unalaq & ushers in the apocalypse during the planetary alignment of Harmonic Convergence.
While an apocalypse from a human perspective, what actually happens is that the Old Ones reclaim the world they used to rule over before humans evolved. This is slightly different from Legend of Korra's canon, where humans lived on Earth before the spirits came, but you still have that element of the dark spirits "reclaiming the planet." Unavaatu even declares that "it's time to take back the physical world."
Call of Cthulhu wasn't the only story where Lovecraft seemed to express a paranoid fear of the ocean. There is also Dagon and the race of eerie fish-men who worship him, the Deep Ones. It's an idea that strongly resembles this guy here. In fact, of the legions of dark spirits in Book 2, many resemble fish or other sea creatures.
They also have oh so many tentacles, which is another trope Lovecraft is often associated with despite arguably not having that many tentacled monsters. In fact, what first got me thinking of these comparisons was when Unalaq had a water tendril on each arm & Vaatu coming out of his mouth, causing him to look like some kind of tentacled man-horror.
This, like most of the season, took place in the Southern Tribe. This can be compared to Antarctica, which was the setting of another of Lovecraft's famous stories, At The Mountains of Madness. The plot doesn't bear much of a resemblance--at least, I don't think Korra found an alien city--but Lovecraft's focus was on the inhospitable, barren nature of the continent. He put particular emphasis on impassable mountain ranges that acted as barriers of ice beyond which, we eventually find, lies ancient secrets from another world. It's immediately where my mind went in the shots that established the Everstorm. While there are storms in The Mountains of Madness, they aren't that plot-significant. Still, we know the Everstorm to be the product of another world leaking into the human one, which is echoed by the eerie green color of the thunderclouds.
Madness is at the heart of many of Lovecraft's works. The Antarctic mountain maze is just one of the many places where his protagonists go insane at things human minds weren't meant to comprehend. I hadn't originally considered the Fog of Lost Souls when I sat down to write this, but considering everything else, maybe the spirit that invades your mind & drives you insane is no accident.
The common understanding of this trope is that looking at the Old Ones causes you to lose your mind, but to be fair, this is only because they're an extreme manifestation of human insignificance on a cosmic scale. This is what the battle between Raava & Vaatu really represents. It seems inevitable that, some day, Vaatu will win, & humans will be destroyed. Even the mighty Avatar can only delay the inevitable. The dark spirits will reclaim the world for at least 10,000 years until Vaatu is destroyed again, but they will have chances to resurface whenever the cosmos aligns. So the cycle will continue on time scales too vast for humans to comprehend, just as how the Old Ones have to periodically hibernate for eons. Perhaps aided by a devout cultist such as Unalaq.
But where this revelation would leave one of Lovecraft's protagonists a gibbering mess, soon to be dead or institutionalized, Legend of Korra takes a more optimistic approach. Sure, Vaatu may win one day, but that day is not today. The quest to push back the chaos & destruction he represents continues, presented as something the Avatar is determined to never give up on.
Another departure is that Vaatu seemed to have much less staying power than an alien-god-induced fever dream. Besides a few cameos in hallucinations or jokes later in the series, people in the Avatar world seem unconcerned by his passing. Sure, a hitherto unknown planetary alignment released a force of pure chaos bent on destroying the world, & who knows how many others there are where he came from, but that's over now, & some of us have work in the morning. As long as the world doesn't end, I guess you still have to worry about paying the bills.
Speaking of, it's all fiction, so no need to lose sleep over it. But hopefully getting my thoughts out there will help my mind relax, & hopefully, you enjoyed going on this journey with me. Let me know if I convinced you or not, or if there are any other similarities or lesser-discussed influences you've noticed. I will hopefully be well-rested when I see your comments.

have to be on my top three list of things I hate the most. I do understand that sometimes people don't want their teammates to be so strong that it leaves you left out of the game but it feels like the AI are much more defenseless than anything else. Awesome games implement teammates to literally be like your other half in games where they have so much playability some games leave the AI team to purposely not have that feel because they don't want you to feel like you can rely on them too much.
I get it some games don't want them to be super helpful and that's where some of them are just kind of here and there about things but sometimes they will implement it so that they are very very reliable to an extent to where you can always use them to really help out on fights but this game does genuinely neither and they get more in the way than none.
Don't get me started on the warlock where he'll hit you randomly without you noticing especially if you are a lower level 💀
And ninjas because they have a combo set that's just truly obnoxious

I'm trying to build a dashboard including a formula that shows me the number of rows in a table where there's a match between a dropdown list and multiple columns, and then filter the results by different columns in the table.
When someone changes the selection in the dropdown list, the formula should reference the selection against the range to produce the output.

Here's a screenshot of what I am trying to achieve. I have selected "Big Apple" in the dropdown list (A2). The green table contains the expected results.
There are 2 ripe and 4 unripe Big Apples - I need the formula to reflect this. Then in Column F I need to show how many ripe and unripe Big Bpples there are for each colour.
Then if I change the selection to "Small Banana", it should show 1 ripe and 2 unripe Small Bananas, and how many for each colour, and so on.
I also need to create green tables for each column in C-J - so I'll need to show ripe/unripe Big Apples by team, priority, month etc.
The working formula I received yesterday was the below, and it worked for columns K-S when I only had 1 option in the Apples/Bananas/Oranges column (no small/medium/big). I now need to include columns C-J, and make it work for multiple different fruit options.
=LET(keyCol, MATCH($A$2,$C$2:$H$2,0), COUNTIF(OFFSET(C:C,0,keyCol),$J2))
Lastly - I cannot change the order of the columns unless absolutely necessary (doing so would mean I'd have to redo about a week's work, so would like to avoid that!)
