2023.06.01 18:55 acekingoffsuit Final Day European & Relegation permutations for this weekend: Ligue 1, Serie A, & LaLiga
Ligue 1
Final matches: Saturday, 9pm local time (8pm UK, 19:00 UTC, 3pm US Eastern)
TITLE & CHAMPIONS LEAGUE (1st & 2nd to group stage, 3rd to 3rd round qualifying)
Rank | Team | Points | GD |
1 (c, q) | Paris Saint-Germain | 85 | +50 |
2 (q) | RC Lens | 81 | +37 |
3 (q) | Olympic Marseille | 73 | +28 |
There is no doubt about who will represent Ligue 1 in the Champions League. PSG are champions for the second straight season and ninth time in the past 11 years. Lens, who will play in the continent's premier competition for the first time since the 2002/2003 season, will join PSG in the group stage. Marseille will have to try their luck in the third qualifying round.
EUROPA LEAGUE & EUROPA CONFERENCE LEAGUE (4th to Europa, 5th to Europa Conference)
Rank | Team | Points | GD |
4 | LOSC Lille | 66 | +21 |
5 | Stade Rennais | 65 | +29 |
6 | AS Monaco | 65 | +13 |
The situation around the remaining European places is a bit complex. Fourth place earns a Europa group stage place alongside Coupe de France winner Toulouse, while fifth place earns a spot in the Europa Conference League qualifiers. But there's a caveat: The same group that owns Toulouse - RedBird Capital - also owns AC Milan. The Italian side have qualified for the Champions League, but because it's possible for Milan to drop into the Europa knockouts, UEFA rules could prevent Toulouse from entering the competition. If that were to happen, the teams in fourth and fifth would play in Europa and sixth place would go to Europa Conference. Whether that actually happens may depend on whether or not UEFA offers an exception, or if RedBird restructures the ownership in a way that satisfies UEFA's rules (like RB Leipzig and Red Bull Salzburg).
In short, the team in fourth will play in Europa League no matter what happens. Fifth will play in a European competition to be determined later, while sixth may or may not play in Europe.

RELEGATION (17th through 20th to Ligue 2)
Rank | Team | Points | GD |
16 | AJ Auxerre | 35 | -26 |
17 | FC Nantes | 33 | -19 |
18 (r) | ES Troyes | 23 | -36 |
19 (r) | AC Ajaccio | 23 | -52 |
20 (r) | Angers SCO | 18 | -47 |
In previous seasons, just two teams would go down directly to Ligue 2 and a third would do battle in a relegation playoff. With Ligue 1 contracting to 18 teams starting next season, however, there is no relegation playoff this campaign, and a total of four teams will drop down to the second tier. Angers punched their relegation ticket at the end of April, with Ajaccio and Troyes joining in two weeks later. The final relegation place comes down to the last day of the season. Auxerre will avoid an immediate return to Ligue 2 with victory against a Lens side that are assured of second place. Should they slip, the door will be open for Nantes to secure survival with a win of their own over already-condemned Angers.

Nantes (home vs Angers) clinch safety with:
LaLiga
Final matches: Sunday, 11:30am (European qualification-related matches) & 2pm (Relegation-related matches) local time (5:30pm & 8pm UK, 16:30 & 19:00 UTC, 12:30pm & 3pm US Eastern)
TITLE & CHAMPIONS LEAGUE (1st through 4th plus Europa League winner to group stage)
Rank | Team | Points | GD |
1 (c, q) | FC Barcelona | 88 | +51 |
2 (q) | Real Madrid | 77 | +39 |
3 (q) | Atletico Madrid | 76 | +37 |
4 (q) | Real Sociedad | 68 | +15 |
11 (q) | Sevilla | 49 | -6 |
The Champions League places are set. Barcelona are champions of LaLiga for the 27th time, and are set to make their 20th consecutive Champions League appearance next season. They will be joined by Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid, and Real Sociedad via league performance. Sevilla will be there as well after their penalty shootout win in the Europa League final over Roma.
EUROPA LEAGUE & EUROPA CONFERENCE LEAGUE (5th and 6th to Europa, 7th to Europa Conference)
Rank | Team | Points | GD |
5 (el) | Villarreal | 63 | +19 |
6 (el) | Real Betis | 59 | +5 |
7 | CA Osasuna | 50 | -6 |
8 | Athletic Club | 50 | +4 |
9 | Girona FC | 49 | +4 |
10 | Rayo Vallecano | 49 | -5 |
The Europa League places are set, as Real Betis and Osasuna are assured of finishing fifth and sixth respectively. After that... it's a jumble. FOUR teams are within a single point of the final European place. Osasuna is the only club that can secure European football on its own, as a win would be enough to clinch seventh... but they host Girona, who will head to the UECL if they win and Athletic Club do not. Athletic need a win and an Osasuna loss to claim the place, but they're facing Real Madrid in the Bernabeu. Rayo Vallecano can reach Europe, but they need to win, hope Athletic do not, and hope that there's no winner in the Osasuna/Girona clash.
Osasuna (home v Girona) clinch UECL with:
- Win, OR
- Draw & Athletic loss/draw & Rayo Val. loss
Athletic Club (away v Real Madrid) clinch UECL with:
Girona (away v Osasuna) clinch UECL with:
Rayo Vallecano (away v Mallorca) clinch UECL with:
- Win & Osasuna/Girona draw Athletic loss/draw
RELEGATION (18th through 20th to LaLiga 2)
Rank | Team | Points | GD |
13 | Cadiz CF | 41 | -23 |
14 | Getafe CF | 41 | -11 |
15 | Valencia CF | 41 | -3 |
16 | UD Almeria | 40 | -16 |
17 | Celta Vigo | 40 | -11 |
18 | Real Valladolid | 39 | -30 |
19 (r) | RCD Espanyol | 36 | -17 |
20 (r) | Elche CF | 24 | -37 |
You thought the Europa Conference battle was tough? Try this on for size: SIX teams are within two points of the final relegation place. FIVE of the final day's ten matches will have a say on who joins Elche and Espanyol in LaLiga 2 next season.
It could be very simple: if Valladolid lose to Getafe, they are relegated. A Valladolid draw potentially brings Alemria and Celta Vigo into the mix. A win gives Valladolid safety and potentially puts Getafe, Cadiz, and Valencia at risk.
If Valladolid win, things have the potential to get very crazy. There is the potential for anywhere between two and five teams to be level on points for the final relegation spot. Because head-to-head results take precidence over goal difference when it comes to tiebreaking in LaLiga, the potential ties get too complicated for me to work out every single one, especially for the combinations of more than two teams. (For example: If Valencia and Cadiz are tied, Valencia go down. If it's Valencia and Getafe, Getafe go down. If it's Getafe and Cadiz, Cadiz go down. If all three are tied, Valencia go down.) But here are all of the relevant head-to-head tiebreak scenarios if it does come down to just two teams:
Cadiz: Beat Getafe & Valencia; lose to Celta Vigo & Almeria
Getafe: Beat Celta Vigo; lose to Cadiz, Valencia, & Almeria
Valencia: Beat Getafe & Celta Vigo; lose to Cadiz & Almeria
Almeria: Beat Cadiz, Getafe, Valencia, & Celta Vigo; lose to Valladolid
Celta Vigo: Beat Cadiz & Valladolid; lose to Getafe, Valencia, & Almeria
Valladolid: Beat Almeria; lose to Celta Vigo
Real Valladolid (home v Getafe) clinch safety with:
- Win, OR
- Draw & Almeria loss
Almeria (away v Espanol) clinch safety with:
- Win, OR
- Draw & Valladolid draw, OR
- Celta Vigo loss
- Valladolid loss
Celta Vigo (home v Barcelona) clinch safety with:
- Win, OR
- Draw & Almeria loss, OR
- Draw & Valladolid draw, OR
- Valladolid draw & Almeria win/draw, OR
- Valladolid loss
Cadiz (away v Elche), Getafe (away v Real Valladolid), & Valencia (away v Real Betis) each clinch safety with:
- Win/draw, OR
- Real Valladolid loss/draw, OR
- Celta Vigo loss, OR
- Almeria loss
- Each team may be at risk of relegation with a loss if Valladolid win & Celta Vigo win/draw & Almeria win/draw, depending on other results.
Serie A
Final matches (impacting European qualification and Relegation): Sunday, 9pm local time (8pm UK, 19:00 UTC, 3pm US Eastern)
Other matches: Friday, 8:30pm local time, Saturday, 6:30pm & 9pm local time, Sunday 6:30pm local time
TITLE & CHAMPIONS LEAGUE (1st through 4th to group stage)
Rank | Team | Points | GD |
1 (c, q) | SSC Napoli | 87 | +47 |
2 (q) | SS Lazio | 71 | +28 |
3 (q) | Inter Milan | 69 | +28 |
4 (q) | AC Milan | 67 | +19 |
Napoli have left no doubt about their position as champions, as they will be 16 points clear of the field entering the final day. The Scudetto holders will enter the Champions League alongside Lazio and Milan's blue and red clubs. Inter Milan's group stage qualification is music to the ears of Shakhtar Donetsk supporters; because both of this year's UCL finalists have qualified for next year's Champions League via their league positions, Shakhtar will avoid the qualifiers and head straight to the group stage.
EUROPA LEAGUE & EUROPA CONFERENCE LEAGUE (5th and 6th to Europa, 7th to Europa Conference)
Rank | Team | Points | GD |
5 | Atalanta BC | 61 | +15 |
6 | AS Roma | 60 | +11 |
7 | Juventus | 59 | +22 |
Inter Milan's triumph in the Coppa Italia means that two Italian teams will reach the Europa League via their Serie A performance, and Atalanta and Roma are in the drivers' seats for those places. Juventus, whose penalty of 15-then-0-then-10 points has dropped the Old Lady from the Champions League places to the Europa Conference position, can still make the Europa League if they win and one of the other two teams do not.
Fiorentina can also secure a place in the Europa League if they defeat West Ham United in the Europa Conference League final. Their results would have no impact on the placement of the other three Italian teams in the Europa & Europa Conference mix.
Of course, these permutations could all be for naught, as UEFA may impose a penalty of its own on Juventus in the form of a European competition ban.
Atalanta (home vs Monza) clinch Europa League with:
- Win, OR
- Draw & Roma draw, OR
- Roma loss, OR
- Juventus loss/draw
Roma (home vs Spezia) clinch Europa League with:
- Win, OR
- Juventus loss/draw
Juventus (away vs Udinese) clinch Europa League with:
- Win & Atalanta loss/draw, OR
- Win & Roma loss/draw
RELEGATION (18th through 20th to Serie B)
Rank | Team | Points | GD |
17 | Spezia Calcio | 31 | -30 |
18 | Hellas Verona | 31 | -26 |
19 (r) | Cremonese | 24 | -34 |
20 (r) | Sampdoria | 19 | -45 |
Sampdoria and Cremonese are headed down to Serie B after this weekend, but the third team that makes the drop may not be known after the final day. The FIGC have implemented a new rule for Serie A: If there is a tie on points for either the title or the final relegation place, tie will be broken via one-game playoff. Spezia and Verona may end up being the first playoff participants, as they enter the final day level on 31 points. Should one obtain a better result than the other - Verona away to CL-assured Milan, Spezia away to Europa-contending Roma - then that team will clinch safety. But if they have the same result, then the playoff awaits.
Spezia (away vs Roma) clinch safety with:
- Win & Verona loss/draw, OR
- Draw & Verona loss
Verona (away vs AC Milan) clinch safety with:
- Win & Spezia loss/draw, OR
- Draw & Spezia loss
Spezia and Verona to play in relegation playoff on 11 June with:
- Spezia win & Verona win, OR
- Spezia draw & Verona draw, OR
- Spezia loss & Verona loss

2023.06.01 17:00 prinex Real estate taxation in Switzerland
Hi all, as the discussion on real estate high prices goes on I wanted to detail how homes are taxed in Switzerland (where I live).
As you probably know Switzerland has the 2nd highest income pro capita in the world and is a small country with not much usable land for buildings. This would call for super-high real estate prices, in reality this is not so, even in the hot area like zürich 700 a$ rent a week will get you a very nice 2 br flat close to everything (and bus / train service in CH is second to none).
This has to to do with a lot of measures introduced to curb speculation.
First instead of the flat 15% flat CGT tax, we have a degressive one - if you sell after 1 year is 100%, after 2 years 95% and so on (it varies around Switzerland regions). But the gist of it - you cannot buy for flipping as all your gains will be wiped out.
Second your home and any holiday home generates a "self-income" - an amount of income, more or less the same value as renting the property, which is added to you real income (even if you live in it). This way the gearing from deducting mortgage interests get nullified by the "self-income". Note that if you rent out the property this self-income falls out (as you will have to pay taxes on the renting income anyway). This is made to discourage leaving flats empty.
Third buying is limited to CH national or residents, with a special category for overseas investors (basically as a foreigner you can buy a 2M$ Holiday Chalet in Davos but not a 600K residential flat in Basel). There is a bit of difference there as in Australia absentee owners are heavily penalized, while in CH once you buy it (even if you leave CH after a few years) there is no land tax surcharge at all. Commecial Property has no "no-foreign" rule.
The result of this is basically a more or less "flat" increase in real estate value. It did appreciate in real terms a bit over the years - real estate index for Australia went from 100 to 183 (+83%) in the last 10 years, the swiss one from 150 to 190 (+26%). The SMI (Swiss Exchange index) went up 34% in the same time, making it a better investment than real estate.
Maybe Australia should do the same - introducing progressive CGT over 10 years, and introducing self-rent for every property which is not the principal residence.

2023.06.01 16:00 tinyDrunkElf Correction. 2.29B GME net-short shares have accumulated, at weighted average price of $20.57, since January 2019. This 2.29B shares is NOT short interest, it is the aggregation of each day's net short volume (daily_short_volume minus daily_long_volume).
| Why the correction? The SPLIVVY! Data from chart exchange did not have the split factored in for dates prior to July 22, 2022. I always forget some mundane detail... https://preview.redd.it/cwdoty5jwe3b1.jpg?width=625&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=8db1923f99ed35eab9759acbd0661104d105b232 However, I like these numbers even more! The splivvy snafu was pointed out to me quickly, and I wanted to get this update out sooner, but have been busy and while under-estimating is bad, avoid over-estimating would be worse! I have two sets of data, one from chart exchange for short volume, one from nasdaq for the close price. VOLUME: Chart exchange data doesn't account for the split as a dividend. I needed to multiply chart exchange shares by 4 through July 21, 2022. July 21, 2022 per chart exchange = 1926119 July 21, 2022 adjustment = 4 x 1926119 = 7704476 July 21, 2022 from nasdaq = 9277796 Not all volume is reported to chart exchange, so it seems some disparity exists between chart exchange and nasdaq, which is why the numbers are not equal. Any other splits? - 'ex arr tee'? Sep. 11, 2015, outside of this data range, no accommodation needed
- 'eye J H'? June 09, 2005, outside of this data range, no accommodation needed

- 'arr ee tee el'? Three
- April 23, 2020. 1:10 reverse split
- January 11, 2021. 5:1 split
- October 25, 2021. 5:1 split
- 'towel'? Yes, 4 splits
- most recent was in 2000, outside of this data range, no accommodation needed

Overview GME Top chart has price action - blue line should be familiar, it's the price action
- purple line is the weighted average price of all shorts made since January 2019
- Sure seems like GME price flirts with that line.
Bottom chart has volume - bar is volume divided by shares outstanding
- blue dots are short volume percentage of daily volume
- blue dots are biggest and darkest when daily volume is 10% or more
- orange line is 12-day simple moving average (SMA) of blue dots
- purple line is total net shorts divided by shares outstanding
Summary of data: - 13.34B shares of GME have been sold short since January 2019, with weighted average price of $20.57
- 11.04B shares of GME have been sold long since January 2019, with weighted average price of $19.77
- 2.29B more shares sold short than long
- NORMALIZED using outstanding shares, this gives a dimensionless number which is useful for comparison against other stocks
- this 2.29B number is an artifact:
- a: short sellers shuffling their existing shorts around (one closing and someone else opening)
- b: new shorts being made
- c: market makers providing liquidity
- Disparity with reported short interest:
- the current reported short interest of GME is 57.7097M, or 18.94% percent (57.7097M is short interest, I should have been more clear in my first post, the 2.29B is not short interest)
- 57.7097 / 304.68 = 0.1894, or 18.94%
- If the reported short interest is accurate, it implies that only 2.52% of GME shorts are closed on the lit (public) exchanges or in reported trades. Calculation: "1 - ((752 - 18.94)/752)"

- this IS NOT: short interest
- Short interest is reported to FINRA, there are specific rules for the values reported.
- This could possibly considered as 'maximum theoretical short interest', with the huge limitation that from just these two simple datasets, we cannot infer a lot about when shorts are closed. Only the generous assumption that any time long-volume > short-volume, shorts are closing.
- Stop telling me it isn't short iterest. I know it, you know it, they know it, everyone knows it.
- this IS : data starting from January 2019
- this IS NOT: data before January 2019
Why these tickers? - 'ex arr tee'
- often appears in GME discussions, mainly because of the official high short interest. There are ~100 ETFs that hold GME, 'ex arr tee' is the largest "equal" strategy ETF holding GME. Other ETFs hold GME but follow different strategies.
- 'eye J H'
- the ETF with the most GME shares
- 'ee W em sea'
- another "equal" strategy ETF holding GME, significantly less shares than 'ex arr tee'
- 'arr ee tee el'
- another "equal" strategy ETF holding GME, significantly less shares than 'ex arr tee'
- 'towel'
- often appears in discussions, potentially a good example of cellar boxing, potential analysis could be done here to estimate how much profit was made with outstanding shares and weighted short price
- 'popcorn'
- sometimes called swapcorn and often appears in discussions
"Shorts closed" (I don't think so) Someone's going to have to spin out theories on this, this post is going to be too long already. I'll be happy to post more data and charts around specific dates, but will take a first shot at this. Let us examine some dates, then. Feb 24, 2021, assume no shorts prior to this date GME sneeze and massive dip, then run-up again. Around this time, many trading platforms had issues. Feb 1 to now, many main news outlets reporting that shorts were covering. Maybe they were, but not all the way, and they seemed to have opened up a ton of new shorts at that same time. Looks more like new shorts were created. - 1.55B net-short shares
- weighted average short price of $40.11
- weighted average long price of $40.59.

If these average prices are to be believed, why don't shorts close their already vastly profitable shorts? I'm not going to post charts for all tickers in the table, this post is getting long enough. I'll post those separately in case the post is flagged for brigading or whatever. But 'towel' seems relevant as it was recently de-listed and RC has been involved. This is what I think cellar-boxing looks like, and what shorts would like to have happened to GME. towel Other charts 'popcorn' 'eye J H' 'ex arr tee' Discussions 'this is not short interest' No, it is not. It is the summation of daily net short volume (each day can have a positive or negative impact on the running tally). 'does it relate to short interest?' I think it does, I'm not sure how to interpret it. This theory needs refining... If shorts DID close in private trades, what proportion of these trades were private? 18.94% short interest is what we have, 752% (7.52 above times 100) is what this calculation predicts. If this 752% didn't "solidify" as sustained shorts, they would have been closed privately leaving 18.94% as the net short interest. So we subtract it from the 752% expected. (752 - 18.94) / 752 = 0.97412, or 97.48% shorts resolved/closed privately. Leaving 2.52% of long orders for GME make it to the lit (public) exchanges. I'm considering this 752% as a theoretical maximum as we don't have any insight into when and at what price shorts close. Please read the '75% example' below to see how this 2.29B or 7.52 number does not track with short interest. (thank you [redacted] for sticking with me in the last post to get this 75% scenario to sink in) Please note, this is speculation. I'm sure there are better ideas out there of how this should be used and interpreted. Please voice those ideas! 'not just long volume can be used to cover a short' Can short volume be used to transfer a short? It was pointed out to me that there is potential for short volume to be used by market maker in potentially transferring a short postition between two firms. This is very interesting. I have provided an example of how this would skew the data, see the '75% short; example below. hot potato? shuffling chairs on the titanic? If anyone have more insight on firms transferring short positions and would that in fact be reported as short volume please share. It seems like it would show up in short volume. Why is 'ex arr tee' so weird? Answer: it's an equal weight ETF a search for "equal weight etfs": As the term implies, equal weight means assigning the same weights to each component in a particular index. For example, a hypothetical exchange-traded fund (ETF) that equally weights its 100 holdings would assign a weight of 1% to each at the time the fund rebalances. The theory for shorting an ETF is that if a fund wanted to short a particular stock without outright shorting it, they could short the ETF to create a short position on all the contents of the ETF. Then, to negate some of that short, they buy long only the securities they don't want short. One burger, hold the pickles. An equal weight ETF has predictable proportions of it's contents, making maintaining the balance of short-through-the-ETF and long-individual securities easier. Any ETF could be used this way, but it seems it would be easier to maintain the balance over a long time period with the equal weight ETF. 'short volume cannot be used this way' That's what FINRA seems to say as well. And to those who say this, I have questions: - What should this short volume data be used for?
- What does it mean, if not some sort of sentiment of bullishness or bearishness?
- We can infer something from each daily short volume individually, but not an aggregate of the daily short volume? And, the difference between total long volume and total short volume, meaningless?
- if it is meaningless because shorts can close off-exchange... that right there seems to be the problem, dark pools, unlit trading: public sell, private buy. It may not be price manipulation (legally), but it sure smells like price manipulation.

- this theory is not aware of FirmA closing their short, and treats it as net new shares short, when it is a transfer of the short position
Example 3: The coiled spring What happens when we're sitting at repeated 75% short volume and the liquidity dries up? - long volume is 100, others sell 100 owned shares to FirmC
- this theory net short? short - long = 300 - 200 = 200 added
- this theory is not aware of FirmA closing their short, and treats it as net new shares short, when it is a transfer of the short position
- day2 (100% short volume, uh-oh):
- short volume is 400, FirmA short-sells 300 to FirmB, and 100 to FirmC
- long volume is 0
- this theory net short? short - long = 400 - 0 = 400 added
- this theory is not aware of effects of FirmB closing their short, and treats it as net new shares short, when it is a transfer of the short position
- this theory is aware of effects of FirmA increasing it's short position
- day3 (100% short volume, oh, crap):
- short volume is 500, FirmB short-sells 400 to FirmA, and 100 to FirmC
- long volume is 0
- this theory net short? short - long = 500 - 0 = 500 added
- this theory is not aware of FirmA closing their short, and treats it as net new shares short, when it is a transfer of the short position
- this theory is aware of effects of FirmB increasing it's short position
There should be a spectrum from 75% short on day 1 and 100% short on day 2, it wouldn't be immediate as in this example. However, if short volume began approaching 100% short, shorts would have to get creative with hiding their shorts, and potentially generate themselves a synthetic long position. Perhaps by shorting an ETF to borrow shares from within it? What else? Swaps? Get everyone else to agree to stop buying in the lit exchange? Of course, all that would just be kicking the can. Those shorts need to be bought back. They knew it when they entered the position, two sides to a position. Sell first and buy later, or buy first and sell later. Did they get tricked into opening the short position? Foul play? Company was not supposed to remain in business? Peterffy lives rent free in my mind "GME needs to go to zero". They chose to sell first. Now buy. https://preview.redd.it/umesfxklxe3b1.jpg?width=761&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=48fb92d32876602286f08c0a2b5e4790f3dfd1e5 TLDR; Update Due to Splivvy data neglection Updating to add further explanation, charts, and examples. $20.57 is the weighted average short open price for the total 13.34B short shares since January 2019. This can be thought of as representing bearish sentiment. $19.77 is the weighted average long open price for the total 11.04B total long shares since January 2019. This can be thought of as representing bullish sentiment. 2.29B net shares shorted have accumulated on the public feed since January 2019. This is the aggregate "short minus long" for this time period. - this is important, this 2.29B number is NOT short interest - this 2.29B number is simply the accumulated net short volume since January 2019, it is not short interest If the reported short interest is accurate, a calculation of: "1 - ((752% - 18.94%)/752%)" implies that only 2.52% of 2.29B these GME shorts were closed on the lit (public) exchanges or in reported trades. Sure looks like shorts never closed (they may have closed a portion in early 2021, but re-opened the same amount and more). Just looks like they've worked hard to get their shorts averaged up to the $20.57 price. But, with liquidity draining and the free float shrinking, where will they get the shares? submitted by tinyDrunkElf to Superstonk [link] [comments] |

2023.06.01 15:58 WolfLeviathan9000 Why am I so insecure about my tastes / what I enjoy? (20M)
(Firstly, I just want to apologize for this post being a bit long, I'm just trying to express each and every one of my thoughts on this issue of mine in as thorough of a manner as possible. Also, I should state that although this is an issue that really does deeply impact my mental health, the primary reason I feel like this sub is the best place to post this is due to the fact that every other place I thought of to post it (advice, vent, etc.) seem to have either clear rules that my post breaks, or rules that are worded just vaguely enough for me to not be sure.)
When I hear even the smallest, slightest criticism towards something I enjoy, I immediately feel like it’s the absolute worst thing ever and that I’m an idiot and there’s something wrong with me for enjoying it. For instance, one of my favorite games of all time is Half-Life 2. That game got AMAZING critical reception and countless awards. Some people, however, claim that it doesn’t hold up today and is overrated. When I say some people, I mean what is probably about 1 in every 50 people who have played it. But to ME, it feels like 49,999 in every 50,000.
Seriously, even the smallest criticisms towards the things I enjoy are enough to make me feel so bad about my enjoyment of them that I suddenly don’t want to play/watch/listen to/whatever that particular thing for like 2 weeks straight. Even if it’s a poor criticism that doesn’t make sense, it STILL makes me feel insecure. Hell, a couple years ago, I was in a discord call, playing a game with a friend of mine, and a few of his discord friends who I didn’t even know the NAMES of, and have never even heard of since. They were basically complete strangers to me. Yet, one of them stated that an ITEM from a game I like had a stupid name, and that TINY LITTLE COMMENT was enough to make me feel slightly upset. Let me restate that for you: Someone who was basically a complete stranger to me said that an ITEM from a game that I like had a stupid name, and that was enough to make me feel upset. I’m dead serious, my problem is that bad.
Sometimes it doesn't even have to be an actual criticism to get under my skin. Someone could just say something as simple as "I dislike [insert thing I like here]" And it's enough to make me think "Oh god, do they dislike it because they're smarter than me and are able to analyze it better than me, and realize why that particular thing is actually garbage???"
It also really doesn’t help that it feels as though a very large majority of the time, when I was growing up, whenever I developed an interest in a new “thing”, it was always through experiencing whatever is usually almost universally agreed upon by the fanbase to be the worst entry or version of whatever that thing is. For example, growing up, I got into the Transformers franchise through the live action Michael Bay movies, which seem to be constantly trashed by movie critics and fans alike, and I also got into Indiana Jones through Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, which the entire fanbase seems to agree is the absolute worst movie in the series. I’m a big fan of horror, because when I was very young, I used to watch lots of let’s plays of shitty early 2010s indie horror games and listen to tons of creepypasta narrations on YouTube. To this day, I still go back and watch Markiplier’s old horror game let’s plays from time to time, and unironically enjoy creepypastas and other internet horror stories. However, as I previously stated, a lot of those games were really terrible looking back, and creepypastas and other internet urban legends are so heavily criticized and trashed that even the very word “creepypasta” seems to have negative connotations tied to it. And that makes me feel bad for enjoying them.
I really haven’t seen that many movies in my life, but I find that I end up enjoying probably about 9 out of every 10 movies I see. In fact, one of my favorite “once in a while” special activities that I enjoy doing with friends and/or family is going to the movie theater. I like the atmosphere of the lobby, the food, the smells, the lights, the overall “aesthetic”, and even things as simple as getting real comfortable in my seat and watching the previews. But despite all this, I really can’t say I like movies as a whole that much, and I rarely find myself interested in watching new movies, at the theater (Hell, I’d even argue that I’m more excited for the theater itself than the actual movie) OR at home. Why? Like I’ve said before, I find myself coming out of almost every single movie, out of the few that I have seen in my life, thinking “That was pretty good! I enjoyed that a lot!” But then when I get home, I scroll the internet and start seeing reviews for the very same movie I watched, and it feels like 99.999% of the time, EVERYONE is shitting on it. It makes me feel like there’s something wrong with me for enjoying it, and it makes me feel bad. It makes me want to just stop watching movies altogether. So this whole problem is actually causing me to deprive myself of new, fun experiences and discovering new areas of my own happiness. Not just in movies, They just work best for an example in this context, but in everything. This problem also partially makes me want to actually avoid thinking critically about why I enjoy certain things, because I’m afraid of slowly realizing that the things I enjoy, upon closer inspection, are terrible and I’m a moron for enjoying them.
Sometimes I try to think to myself “Okay, maybe the things I enjoy really are “objectively bad”. But even if they are, so what? Is there really a problem with having “bad taste?” And that’s when I start coming across these internet armchair psychologists who try to tell me that the things you enjoy somehow tie into and reflect on things like your inner psychology, your values, your background and upbringing, etc. and therefore if you have bad taste, there’s something wrong with you, you’re a bad person, and you’re everything that’s wrong with society. (I’m paraphrasing, but you get my point) There was a franchise of games I used to love, and my favorite game in that franchise happened to be the one that half of the fanbase seemed to absolutely hate. I read a comment on that particular game’s subreddit, explaining why they enjoyed the “worst” game in that franchise. Some guy replied to him, basically telling him that the original commenter was satisfied with less, and therefore he was the reason that these big game companies are able to keep getting away producing terrible low-quality broken games (or something like that. Again, paraphrasing.) And I fear that he’s right. Our enjoyment of that game is inherently a bad thing and we should feel bad about it. Often times, these criticisms also give me a feeling as though the person giving them is trying to "debunk" my reasons for enjoying a particular thing, and that feeling really REALLY gets under my skin.
I know trolling assholes on the internet are the last people you want to listen to when it comes to these sorts of things, but for some reason, I still can’t help but worry that deep down they’re actually right, and everything I enjoy really is terrible, I have terrible taste, there’s something wrong with me, I’m a bad person, and I should feel bad about it. I’ve had these insecurities all my life, but it wasn’t until the last few years that I’ve actually realized it due to the fact that it was worsening, and it wasn’t until the last few months that I got the idea to attempt to reach out to anyone in order to figure out why I have this problem and how I can stop it.
Sometimes, I read and hear criticisms towards things I like that are worded in a very harsh, hostile, angry manner, and THOSE ones instead make me react with irrational anger. Sometimes those types of criticisms make me feel so upset that I start imagining myself lashing out in anger towards those critics by taking a blunt object and hitting them with it. I don’t think it takes a genius to figure out why that’s a problem. Although I think this particular aspect of my problem ties into another separate issue I have, which I might talk about another time.
Why do I let other people’s opinions have so much power over my enjoyment of the things that make me happy?
I feel like this whole problem most likely ties into an even grander issue I have, which I’ll touch on more in (what will probably be) my next reddit post.
So why do I have this issue? Are all those internet assholes and critics really right? Is there really a problem with me enjoying things that aren’t “objectively” good, and therefore there’s something wrong with me? And if not, how do I stop feeling this way?

2023.06.01 15:49 Duwt I miss early Dark Order.
I miss the ARG-esque recruitment videos with turtleneck guy. Remember how you could go to that site and if you were willing to give them slightly too much contact information they might give you a Number? That ruled. I miss the creepers too, even if they occasionally hit silly. I liked the idea of DO having a bunch of faceless goons to throw at people like Rita Repulsa deploying the Putties. They’re weren’t just a cult of wrestlers, they were a cult of everyday people with devotees willing to (brainwashed into?) throw on skull masks and put their bodies at risk. Uno using them as a throne was weird in a cool way, I enjoyed when he was a clear leader.

2023.06.01 15:33 papabear513 I was lost in the wilderness, and something didn't want me to be found...
Sand shifted beneath my feet as I shambled down the river’s edge. I tried to recall what had happened, but the throbbing pain pulsing at my left temple robbed me of any conscious thought. A strange static filled the space between my ears. It wasn’t like the kind you’d find on the tv at odd hours in the night, but more so the soft hum of recycled air piping through a small nozzle above your seat on a plane.
I felt like I was in a fishbowl. My vision would blur, then clear and blur once more. I struggled to keep my balance as I stepped through silt and wet stone.
There was no sign of my kayak or gear anywhere. The gray waters roared across boulders as trees loomed over the edges of the bank. Massive, gnarled roots crept through the ground to gather a drink. The underbrush above the bank was so thick it was impossible to guess at how far I’d drifted before washing up here.
I said a prayer to a God I’d long forgotten; keep me safe… please.
I had no desire to get lost in the surrounding forest, so I decided to follow the river. It seemed like the best and only option I really had. Surely, I would eventually come to a bridge that would put me on a road. Then I could flag someone down for help. Or maybe there would even be a clearing where I could gather my bearings. Perhaps a house or a farm would be there.
I’d read that in these situations, a positive attitude was essential for survival.
But the further I got down the bank, the more worry festered in my brain. It punched holes in my flimsy optimism. I was always cursed with being an overthinker, and now more than ever it felt like a mental prison.
What if I have a concussion?
What if I never find anyone and starve to death out here?
Or worse, what if something starving finds me?
The thought sent shivers down my spine. I reassured myself that bear sightings in Kentucky were very rare, and that I also was likely the only cougar around.
A much needed giggle escaped my lips. I wasn’t really that old, although if you asked my mother, I was certainly way too old not to be married yet. Is 34 too old to be single? I shrugged. Maybe if I did have a husband though, I wouldn’t be alone right now in the middle of the god-forsaken wilderness…
I finally came to a bend in the river a few miles down and silently prayed that just around it laid some sort of civilization. My heart sunk once I saw it was just more of the same on the other side. Trees as far as the eye could see.
For the first time on one of my adventures, I missed the city. I promised myself that after I got out of here, I’d sell all my hiking equipment and never leave Cincinnati again.
IF… I ever got out of here.
My calves screamed as I trudged several more miles down the bank. My mouth was as dry as cotton and my stomach rumbled with hunger.
It was looking bleak. That positive mindset had just about fully decayed when I caught a glimpse of something bright yellow near the water’s edge.
It couldn’t be…
I screeched with joy and sprinted towards my pack. I grabbed the bag and hugged it like it was a long lost relative.
Jesus Christ, I couldn’t believe it. I scanned the area hoping I’d see my kayak washed ashore as well, but no such luck. Still… I was pretty damn happy as I pulled out a water bottle and a bag of trail mix from within and devoured them with abandon.
Concern receded just enough for hope to make a reappearance.
I was almost laughing until suddenly, a series of grunts followed by a low growl cut my celebration short.
I froze…
My eyes flicked back and forth, up and down the tree line, but I saw nothing. There was no visible sign of where the sound had come from.
It was definitely an animal. And it sounded, big.
I zipped up my bag and threw it over my shoulders as calmly as I could muster, then continued my travel along the riverbed.
My legs twitched with the desire to run, but I knew that was a terrible idea. Almost everything that saw you run would want to give chase. It was the nature of predators.
After about half an hour I finally released the tension in my shoulders and let myself breathe a little. I told myself I was in the clear, but I just couldn’t shake that feeling of being watched. Like a pair of eyes were fixated on my backside.
I was thankful for my pack that was filled with extra clothes, food and water, but I wish I’d found the other one as well.
My smaller bag contained a map, compass, and GPS phone. God, wouldn’t that be helpful…
One call to mom and she’d summon an army of Park Rangers and law enforcement to get me.
I sighed deeply and pressed onward. No use crying over things that could be but weren’t.
I’d lost track of my steps and wasn’t sure how many more miles I’d covered, but it felt like a lot. Exhaustion permeated my muscles, crept into my bones and tip-toed up into the base of my skull.
I ignored the throbbing of a headache and noticed for the first time that it was getting dark, and quickly. And to make matters worse a rumble of thunder sounded in the distance.
“Great…” I muttered.
There were small cave-like divots pressed into the sides of the riverbank, I searched for one large enough to give me some shelter for the night. Much to my dismay, I wasn’t getting out of here today and I desperately needed some sleep.
After an hour of clearing my spot of rocks, then gathering twigs and dead grass from above, I was able to get a small fire going at the mouth of the hole. Thankfully, my trusty lighter came through in a pinch.
If only that joint I’d been saving wasn’t in the small pack…
The fire warmed the space quickly and muted the smell of earth and moss. I tried to keep my eyes open for a while longer to see if the storm would reach me but couldn’t. My eyelids were too heavy, my body screamed for sleep, and it overtook me despite the roar of thunder above.
----
Lightning and heavy rain ripped me from my sleep.
My pants were saturated with mud from where the rain had blown in while I slept. I could see the river had risen further up the bank and was now only a few feet from the entrance of my burrow.
My mind was spinning as I tried to decide what to do when lightning struck a tree on the other side of the bank. It illuminated the black void of the night and for just a moment I thought I saw something on the other side of the dark waters.
My heart thundered in my chest. I could swear I saw something out there, watching…
No, it couldn’t be. It had to have been a trick of the light…
Another strike lit up the earth.
A large, black shape towered over a boulder just on the other side. I couldn’t make out it’s features but it’s face looked white as bone with huge antlers spanning over its head like deciduous tree limbs.
I panicked and sprung from my hiding place like a rabbit.
I clawed up the wet clay of the riverbank and blindly tore through the edge of the forest. Limbs and brush whipped at my face and grabbed at my clothing.
All sense was abandoned, flight had taken over.
My legs carried me for as long as they could until I doubled over at the base of an oak tree and emptied the contents of my stomach.
The rain was almost deafening as it pounded on the leaves above, and yet… three grunts… a growl…
It was close.
I couldn’t see a damn thing. I had to move with my hands outstretched in front of me so that I didn’t collide with a tree.
I pushed deeper into the vegetation, completely unsure of where I was going. But something told me, if it caught me, I was dead. Or worse than dead.
I’d read an article last summer that had stuck with me for the better part of a year, where a girl from Russia had been hiking when a Grizzly bear had descended upon her. She’d played dead like you’re supposed to, but I guess it was hungry and began eating her from the feet up. She called her mother and spoke with her for a while as it ate her.
That story looped in my mind like a nightmare as I wept, pushing through thorns, honeysuckle, and saplings.
I patted the Swiss Army knife in my jean pocket and quietly decided that if I was going to be slowly eaten, I’d jam the blade into my neck.
But I prayed it wouldn’t come to that.
More grunts and growls bellowed from somewhere deep within the bowels of the forest. I screamed back this time as tears mixed with rain on my cheeks.
This is it, this is how I die…
The thought felt resolute and concrete. A fact.
But just as I was about to be resigned to it, mercy found me in the darkness.
Headlights cut through the tree trunks about thirty yards away.
I screamed for help as I rushed towards them.
A semi-truck was turning around a bend as I spilled out onto the asphalt, falling to my knees.
I could hear its brakes lock up as the truck skidded towards me, but I couldn’t move. My chest heaved with heavy sobs as the grill of the rig came to almost kiss my forehead.
“WHAT IN GOD’S NAME!” I heard the driver holler as they slammed the door and raced around to the front.
“Are you okay?! What the hell are you doing out here?” A portly woman in overalls grabbed me by the shoulders and examined my face.
But I couldn’t answer. I was too afraid. Too tired.
“Come on honey, let’s get you in the truck.”
She helped guide me up into the cab on the passenger’s side as she told me everything was going to be okay.
I thought… maybe it could be.
Maybe I was okay.
But as soon as hope bubbled to the surface, it once again was massacred by this new reality.
I watched as she waddled around the side of the semi until disappearing in front of the engine block. I saw a flicker of a shadow in the headlights just for a moment.
Then the cab shook slightly. I gasped and leaned over the dash, desperately searching for the woman but I didn’t see her.
My breath pinched off in my throat like a closed pipe. The suspense of the next ten seconds felt like an eternity.
Curly red hair popped over the hood. I furrowed my brow, what the fu…
Then a terrified face emerged, eyes wide like saucers.
“Oh, God… no…” I whispered.
The woman vomited a stream of crimson blood over the hood.
She mouthed something that I couldn’t make out in the rain fall and then was lifted fully into view, impaled in the torso upon massive antlers.
I screamed and threw myself into the driver’s seat.
The gears groaned in protest as I tried to remember how to work the double clutch. My stepdad had been a trucker his entire life and had shown me how to do it… once.
I finally got it into 1-Low after shouting obscenities at the column.
The truck lurched forwards as I watched as the poor woman disappear below the hood again.
The cab rocked violently as I rolled over her and the creature.
A squeal as loud as a dozen elk came from the undercarriage.
I shifted to second gear, then third as I cleared over the top of them.
I watched the rearview mirror as I drove down the hill. I caught a glimpse of it coming to stand, towering over the road.
“FUCK YOU!” I screeched like a Valkyrie.
The turbo whistled as I sped like a madman until it was out of sight.
I drove and drove. Not even stopping at the first two towns I came across. Not until the sun was fully up.
The tears were dry, and my mind was blank. That strange static came back to fill my head. But this time it was much louder, more like a haunted television. And inside the static I was crying out, but I was lost under the noise.
----
The next day I gave the police my statement, or at least a version of it.
I didn’t lie… but I didn’t tell them everything either because I knew they wouldn’t believe it.
It was chalked up to an animal attack. The National Wildlife Department was looking into it.
Cheryl Kramer was the name of the woman who’d tried to help me. They never found trace of her. I knew that they wouldn’t…
When I got home to my apartment I did just what I’d promised, I sold all my gear and donated any hiking clothes I had.
Everything went back to normal for a while. But sometimes when it rained… I could swear I could see something across the street in the open lot.
Waiting…
Watching…
