Chapter 31: A Whale of a Tale and itâs All True
âITâS FUCKING J-POD!â
Kalai watched in shock and awe as the two humans collectively lost their minds, hopping up and down and letting loose a series of high pitched vocalizing as she, Papa, and Mama Sakalbi stared in confusion at the two ecstatic aliens.
Andy turned and ran back to where Kalai and her parents were still staring in amazement and held his hand out, face alight and happier than sheâd ever seen him before. âBinoculars! Quick! I want to see whoâs out there!â Mama Sakalbi tentatively held them out, and he took them with a nod of thanks before rushing back to the bow. Kalai started as he jumped up on the bow and balanced against the roller horns to spot the black and white whales that were swimming fast towards the net.
âEyes on Mama Shachi! Look, over there, see her?â Kalai approached cautiously as Andy pointed in the direction of a cluster of porpoising black shapes that were coming nearer.
âEyes on! I got Grammie Slick out there too; the WHOLE PODâS HERE!â Jackie cut loose an undulating cry and waved her hands as little geysers of water and air shot out from the water on the other side of the net.
Kalai nearly jumped when a miniature version of the Orcas from the clone tank at Headquarters breached the water, leaping almost twice her height into the air before splashing back down in a massive wave.
âLook at that! Butterballâs getting some good air these days!â Andy crowed as he hopped back down from the bow and passed the binoculars to Jackie.
âButterball?â Mama Sakalbi asked as she and Papa joined them. Kalai stared as the Orcas formed a line and charged at the middle of the âSâ bend in the net before diving down in front of it, sending a wave that pushed the corks back. She saw the spouts and the dorsal fins rise again for another charge at the net.
âHeâs the baby, only about four years old. Grammie Slickâs taking the family hunting, see how theyâre flattening the net out? Weâre about to have a
great fucking day!â Andy took Jackieâs shotgun and took it back to the cabin as Kalai and her parents crowded the rail.
âWhat are they doing?â Mama Sakalbiâs question was directed at Jackie and the woman turned to answer with a gigantic smile.
âHerding! See the ones circling around the net?â Jackie pointed to the two dorsal fins that were almost invisible in the fog that was starting to burn off in the morning sun that had started to clear the eastern mountains. âTheyâll be starting to round up small schools of salmon once theyâre done turning our net into a reef. Right now, theyâre running along the line and probably seeing what they have to work with.â
Mama Sakalbi did a double take, âYou must be joking, that level of intelligence would almost be-â
âHuman?â Jackie interrupted with a smile, âYeah, thatâs our original teachers out there. We learned to fish
from them.â
âI was going to say âsentientâ, but I take your point. What I want to know is,
what are they doing?â Mama Sakalbi gestured out at them, with a bewildered look on her face.
âTheyâre using the net as a sea wall. Thing is, the netâs hard to see in the water, but the fish can feel it. Theyâll put their heads into the net, but that doesnât catch them. Theyâll try to swim around it so thatâs why we put an âSâ bend. Thatâs where most of the fish get tangled.â Andy returned and picked up the explanation. âSee in the center of the line? That fin with the black and white little checkmark behind it? Thatâs Grammie Slick, the Matriarch. Sheâs around sixty now, and grew up out here LONG before you all came down. They donât always do this, but I guess with you all keeping the fishing fleets docked, she saw the net and wanted a big meal for the family. Theyâre going to keep pushing the net until itâs in the shape of a crescent and herd a bunch of small schools into a big baitball with pickets to keep the fish pinned in the middle. You watch, thereâll be salmon jumping all over in the middle as they school up.â
âThatâs when youâll see them charge up the center and take big old mouthfuls of salmon. Itâll be a smorgasbord for âem!â Jackie pulled up Andyâs omnipad and started recording.
âWait, but you hate seals for competing with you for food, why are you this excited about Orcas who take so much more?â Papa asked as he also took out his omnipad and started recording as the pod of Orcas finished repositioning their net just as Andy described.
âBecause theyâre using the nets as a reef to trap the fish! See? Look! There they go! The wolves are out scaring every salmon in the area here!â Kalai dug her own omnipad out at Andyâs words and watched as the dorsal fins sank below the waves, with only a faint and fading wake to tell where theyâd gone.
âNow watch âem set pickets! Theyâre going to start patrolling the outside of the net. When they get enough salmon in the middle, theyâre going to charge. When they do, watch the
entire middle section of our corks go under from the salmon trying to get away. They get whole heaping mouthfuls of food and we get a
full net!â
Kalai watched the Orcas swimming in circles around the net like Helix Sharks, and felt a pang of fear seeing the big predators that seemed so gentle and inquisitive in the tank. âBut what if they get caught in the net?â
Jackie suppressed a laugh before sweeping an arm out at the net. âIâve never seen that happen before, and I havenât even heard of it happening before⌠at least not here in the Salish Sea. All our Orcas grew up around these nets, so theyâll either avoid them or use them like they are right now.â
âI think itâs because they can see them and the fish canât. Either way, weâre in for a show!â Andy patted Kalai on the back before pushing Kalai and Mama Sakalbi forward.
For a long while, the surface was calm, save for the circling Orcas as they all watched. Then, by degrees, there was movement on the surface of the water as fish the length of Kalaiâs arm started to jump and kick in the baitball. Kalai watched, fascinated, as Orcas seemed to appear and disappear along the edges but never approached the middle of the net.
All the fins disappeared from the surface and an eerie stillness settled over the water. Suddenly, the water in the middle of the crescent erupted, with hundreds of fish shooting out of the water and a sudden surge that hit and pushed the corks outward before they sank completely out of sight. Jackie and Andy started vocalizing those strange undulating cries again, raising their fists in the air before shouting something in their language. From as best as Kalai could guess, it was encouragement as the Orcas started breaching and jumping. In those moments, Kalai could catch glimpses of their mouths full of salmon.
Kalai watched as the terrified fish swarmed towards the net, and watched as many seemed to jump over it and swim away as the Orcas gorged themselves on the enormous school of salmon they had trapped. It was an awe inspiring sight to see, and Kalai lost herself in the moment watching the amazing display of symbiotic hunting and fishing between them and the Orcas.
The engine of the boat turning over broke the spell they were all under as Andy moved the boat at a dead slow pace back towards the net. âAlright, letâs haul it in and reset for âem! Jackie! Get on the bow with the billhook!â Jackie whooped in agreement and gently pushed passed Kalai to grab a long pole with a small metal hook at the end.
âWeâre gonna have to work fast. Theyâre hungry, and we all want salmon today,â Andy called over the sound of the engine as they approached the giant buoy that marked the end of the net. âDoc! Open that hatch back there and watch your step! Mrs. Vaida, stand clear in the cabin; I want no accidents today, and three on deckâs going to be a crowd with how many fish weâre going to be taking in. Kalai, I want you back in the-â
Kalai shook her head as she put her omnipad away. âI can do it! Let me help!â she was riding the high feeling of watching the Orcas, and seeing Andy and Jackie preparing to go to work while she was to be just a passenger galled her.
Kalai saw Andy give Jackie a look that she couldnât quite interpret. âAlright, but youâll work with me picking fish. Jackie, youâre on the Drum; trade places with me!â
Kalai saw Jackie huff and give Andy a piercing look as she handed off the billhook. âWatch out for jellies, they tend to explode,â the native woman muttered to Kalai as she took over at the net drumâs controls. Kalai was about to volunteer to grab the line with the hook, given her longer reach, but Andy had already leaned almost all the way over the side. Kalai had a momentary scare as Andy seemed to dip forward, seemingly in danger of falling overboard, until he seemed to almost levitate himself using his lower legs back into the boat and pulled the line over the roller horns. She stood there for a moment, unsure of what to do when Andy braced a foot against the side and began to pull on the line and feed it back towards Jackie.
âWay, haul away, weâll hang and haul together! Way, haul away, haul away Joe!â Though she didnât understand the words, Kalai knew a sailing song when she heard one and didnât wait for any instruction. She moved forward opposite Andy and lent a hand, pulling the heavy line in to the cadence of his chant. After two verses, Kalai heard the whine of hydraulics and the slack in the line behind them went taught.
âStand back! Here we go!â Andy called to her and the line began pulling the net back aboard. Kalai looked back to see that Jackie had wrapped the line around the center pole of the drum, with the wheel turning to pull the line and net in out of the water. A small set of guide poles that moved when Jackie twitched the controls kept the line evenly distributed on the drum as the first corks and the dripping wet net began to appear out of the water.
âPut your hoods up!â Andy yelled at her over the noise of the machines, and demonstrated the motion. âItâll keep the water, seaweed and Jellies out of your face and eyes, and take this!â Andy tossed her what appeared to be a handkerchief and he mimed the act of tying it around her face like a mask.
âWhat about you? Youâre sleeveless!â Kalaiâs voice was slightly muffled from the cloth as she tied it around her face before pulling up both hoods.
Andy didnât respond, except to grin at her as he leaned out to watch the net coming up out of the water before it got pulled aboard.
From behind her, Kalai heard Jackie start singing another human sailing song. It was a bit fast paced, and Andy joined in for the chorus. On the third time she heard it, she joined in too.
âBlow ye winds in the morninâ, Blow ye winds, high ho! Haul away your running gear, And blow ye winds, high ho!â
âComing up!â Andy shouted as there were several loud thunks before six large salmon appeared in the giant fluorescent green tangle of the net. The drum stopped, bringing the fish to a halt as Andy pulled on the corkline and scurried his hands back and forth, gathering the net up as he did until he reached the first fish. Kalai watched in awe as he seemed to magically pull the fish from the tangle and shake it out onto the deck. The second one seemed to be resting on top of the tangle and he flipped it over the corkline and shook the fish out onto the deck.
âJust watch these first few. When you get a feel for how Iâm doing this, jump in. Until then, slide these beauties back towards the stern. Jackieâll pitch âem into the hold.â
Kalai nodded and watched Andyâs movements intently. It looked like sorcery, with how fast he moved his hands and zeroed in on a fish. As soon as he was done, heâd whistle to Jackie, who kept singing the cadence out to pull more of the net in, only to stop when more fish were pulled up and over the horns.
The song changed twice before Kalai felt confident enough to jump in. She almost got tangled in the net herself trying to pull out her first fish, but Andy gave the net a quick tug and she was free again. Maddeningly, the fish had simply fallen out of the net without any help from her, and she fumed just long enough for Andy to point to one that was closer to her.
âHoist up the thing, batten down the whatsit! Whatâs that thing spinning, somebody should stop it! Turn hard to Port! Thatâs not Port, NOW I GOT IT! Trust me, Iâm in control!â On the second refrain, Kalai managed to dig her first fish out and drop it to the deck. She let out a whoop, and Andy paused for a moment to give her a quick applause.
âThatâs one, girl! Thereâs a thousand left if weâre lucky!â Jackie called out as Andy sang a verse and tackled another fish in the net.
âKeep an eye on the lead line; make sure it doesnât go over the corks!â Andy called as Kalai ran down her second fish and was about to throw the excess net over the other side. She stopped, and Andy helped her get the fish without tangling the net.
It took until the end of the song for Kalai to find her rhythm, and soon she and Andy were running down fish in the net in a crisp and quick manner. Kalai felt like she could go faster, but Andy had cautioned her to keep pace with the songs, as there was still a lot of net to go. When Kalai spared a glance at the length of net still in the water, she saw that Andy wasnât kidding. It looked like they hadnât even really started to reel it all in.
Ok, itâs hard work, but so is sailing, and heâs my size so I should be able to keep up with him. If he can do it, I can do it! âHaul away you rollinâ kings! Heave away, Haul away! Haul away youâll hear me sing, Weâre bound for South Australia!â
Andy was impressed. Kalai had jumped in without complaint, and she was very coachable. He could feel himself start to flag as they were starting to come to the last third of the net, but Kalaiâs persistence, even though she was sweatier and more haggard than he was, kept him going.
The pile of salmon was almost as deep as their calves, and the deck was getting slick with fish slime. For that matter, so was Andy. In a momentary lull in the fish coming over the horns, Andy caught a glimpse of himself shimmering with all the scales that had flown off the fish as they scraped against the net to hit the deck, flopping. He took a big gulp of air and Kalai groaned as she straightened up, cracking her back as she twisted and bent to relieve her aching muscles.
Andy groaned a bit and looked back towards the stern. It was getting hard to see over the amount of net theyâd pulled back in, but he could see Doc and Mrs. Vaida doing their best to help throw and shove the piles of salmon into the hold. Everybodyâs getting their hands dirty today. Andy smiled and heaved a happy sigh. This, this is what I want. Being out on the water and doing good, hard work.
âSHIT, JELLYFISH!â Kalai shouted as she twisted away to hide her face behind her rain slicker hood. Andy blinked just in time as a wet squelching sound sent a spray of disintegrating jellyfish exploding all over the bow as the net bunched up and got squeezed together.
Andy felt it splatter all over his arms, neck, and face, before he felt it start to slide down his shirt to his chest. Almost immediately, he started to feel the burn. His arms, neck, and chest he could stand, but the blossoming pain on his lips, eyelids, cheeks, and most horribly the inside of his nose overwhelmed all his conditioned pain tolerance.
âFUCK!â Andy screamed. âFUCKING FUCKER! RIGHT IN MY FUCKING FACE! GOD FUCKING DAMNIT! FUCK!â Andy only barely avoided bringing his hands to his face. It was a hard fought thing to deny his instinct to try and scrape it off, but he felt his boots loose purchase and his feet slide out from under him. He hit the pile of fish that surrounded him hard. He was aware of Kalai yelling for her father and Mrs. Vaida, while Jackieâs braying laugh carried over everything else.
Andy felt Kalai trying to grab him, but her gloves were too slick to get a grip and all she did was spread the stingers more evenly over his arms. Andy kept his eyes squeezed shut as he heard Jackie start to direct the confused and panicking aliens.
âHold your breath, cuz, vinegar incoming!â
Andy felt the bitter stinging splash as Jackie poured a steady stream of vinegar out from what he assumed was the giant jug he kept for these occasions underneath the little kitchenette in the cabin. Though nothing about the intensity of the burn changed, in the back of his mind, Andy knew that it was killing the stinging cells.
âAlright, Kally, take that bucket and fill it with seawater from over the side, then dump it on him.â
Andy sputtered a bit and spit as he scrabbled onto his knees. He steadied himself with one hand on the rail beside him and the other which found the corkline. He kept his eyes shut and growled as the burning spread from his hairline down to his navel. A sudden bracing splash of cold water nearly bowled him back over. Without warning, Andy hadn't had time to get a breath and he sputtered and yowled as the water soaked down under his rain gear.
Andy shook his head like a dog, whipping his braid back and forth before daring to open his eyes. âSon of a BITCH!â Andy growled as he got a look at Kalai holding an empty bucket, while Jackie was shooâing Mrs. Vaida and Dr. Heâosforos away to give him some room.
âJesus, quit your bawlin,â you big baby, youâre acting like youâve never been stung before!â Jackie called back to him as Andy ripped the gloves off his hands and plunged them over the side to clean off the stingers.
âItâs in my fucking nose you horseâs ass!â Andy shouted back as he splashed his face. A few strings of purple stingers fell into the water and Andy reared back aboard. âUgh, get another bucket of seawater! I can still feel this shit!â
âAndrei, as a medical professional, I advise you to cease work and-â
Andy looked over as Dr. Heâosforos spoke but waved him off mid sentence. âI appreciate it Doc, but Iâve had it far worse than this. Thereâs a brown and yellow bottle in one of the drawers under the bench that says âMotrinâ. Get me the bottle or enough to tranq a cow, and Iâll go back to work just fine.â
Kalai let loose a piercing scream and Andy looked over just in time to see her rocketed herself backwards, dropping the bucket over the side. The Doctor caught his daughter before she fell into the hold, but he too had a look of fear plastered on his face. Andy and Jackie moved to the side to see what had scared her so badly, and the two of them couldnât help but laugh out loud.
Grammie Slick and two of her daughters were there, sticking their heads out of the water with their mouths open, while Butterball was playing with the bucket.
Jackie laughed and stuck her hand out, rubbing the Orca matriarch on the snout. âRaggedy Andyâs fine, Grammie Slick! Heâs just milking it for sympathy from these gullible hwunâeetums!â
âWhat in the Balance of Nature is going on here?â Mrs. Vaidaâs shocked voice caused Andy and Jackie to look at her as she stared dumbfounded at the Orcas that were gathering alongside the boat.
âOh theyâre just saying âhi.ââ Andy shrugged with a smile, despite the burning.
âMore like âWhat the hell, cousins, you still got fish to pick. Quit loafinâ around and get another set in!ââ
âJackie, Motrin⌠NOW!â Andy growled at her. Jackie blew a raspberry at him before diving into the cabin.
âTheyâre pretty friendly, if youâd like to be introduced,â Andy held out a hand and motioned for Kalai and her father to step forward. Andy dipped his hand in again to make sure it was clear of any stinging cells, before he gently guided the hesitant Kalai to stick her ungloved hand out toward Grammie Slick.
One of the daughters blew a spout before sliding back under water, but Grammie gave a few clicks before briefly touching Kalaiâs outstretched hand. âKalai, this is Grammie Slick, Matriarch of J-Pod. Grammie, this is Kalai⌠a purple hwunâeetum.â Andy laughed a bit at the look of incredulity on Kalaiâs face and the concern on her fatherâs.
There was a series of shutter clicks from behind Andy, and he turned to see Sakalbi snapping pictures as fast as she could. Kalai was clearly torn between fear and wonder as she held perfectly still and silent for Grammie, who was letting her touch her before she slid back under the water herself. Andy laughed as several clicks and whistles from the pod reverberated through the hull of the boat and he leaned back in.
âAlright, breakâs over,â Andy called as he caught the flying bottle of pills Jackie threw at him. He popped two and swallowed them dry before washing the gloves off and putting them on. The extra rinse would have to wait, and heâd have to tough it out until they got back to shore. His boots squelched as he picked his way through the fish on the deck to get back to his station and nodded for Jackie to restart the drum.
It was another twenty minutes before the last of the net was pulled aboard and they were able to clear away all the fish into the hold. Andy stuck his head in and smiled. In a single set, theyâd filled three quarters of it, and they had more than enough fish for the gathering and to feed another ten to fifteen families besides. The spouts and the clicks of J-Pod hanging around the boat, however, told Andy that they wanted their reef back and were still hungry.
Andy ordered them to prep the net for another set and helmed his boat again, only to bomb out in a straight line and let J-Pod take care of the fishing from that point on. Once theyâd finished, Andy moved the boat out of the Orcasâ way and stood outside the cabin with Jackie while the three aliens crowded the bow, watching and recording the whales going to work a second time.
âOk, I think we might get a moment to talk,â Andy muttered to Jackie in Salishian. âNew orders from the Council. Thereâs going to be a raid.â
Jackie sucked in a breath and looked at him, all levity gone. âCambrians, Militia, or the Dummy Bunnies?â
âMilitia and the Interior.â
Jackie whistled softly in surprise as her eyebrows shot up. âReally poking the bear, cuz⌠When and where?â
âUncle Willy wants us to hit the Militia Supply Depot out by Tanner on Saturday,â Andy growled quietly as he watched Kalai pointing to Grammie Slickâs dorsal as she swam out on the picket around the net.
âYou mean the one close to the Snoqualmish?â
âYeah. Full raid, weâre to hit it and take any supplies, especially military, that we can and destroy what we canât. The messier we can make it the better. Weâll meet up with the Resistance on the old Bessemer Logging road by Hancock Creek and they get half for taking the credit. Me and Chuckâve been assigned to âleadâ you.â Andy nodded and tried to flick some of the fish scales off himself, but got nowhere.
Jackie sat down on the rail with a groan before looking back up at him with a smirk. âYou mean babysit on overwatch while we do the real work.â
Andy pursed his numb lips together and considered the ramifications of folding his arms on the jellyfish burns that had started to go quiet thanks to the Motrin. âGrandma and the Council want me to âget my hands dirty.ââ He gritted his teeth in frustration.
âWhat? Iâm sorry, that sentence made zero sense.â Jackie shook her head like sheâd just been slapped.
Andy couldnât keep the frustration and anger out of his tone when he spoke. âApparently there are doubts about my loyalty to the tribe and whether or not Iâve lost my way.â
Jackie huffed in amusement. âEveryone knows the Councilâs fucking stupid, but this is a new level of dumb. You got us land back, you got them to allow you to break the rules to feed our people, theyâre fixing the fuck ups on our waterways because of you and they think youâve gone to the dark side?â Jackie started laughing at the nonsense of the politics.
âLast time we talked, you thought I was playing with fire and-â Andy started to throw back at her before she snorted loudly.
âResults talk, cuz. Three of our Hatcheries returned, and my whole family drawing good money in Imperial Credits? Fuck, even if you had sold out, we need more Clan Heads doing the same thing.â She smiled as she nodded towards their guests on the bow.
âThey still donât trust that I know what Iâm doing,â Andy growled as he folded his arms unconsciously and immediately regretted it.
Jackie snorted. âOf course they donât. You didnât talk to them or get their permission first. Hell, Iâm surprised your grandma didnât chuck you out on your ear for even suggesting that you should work for the dummy bunnies.â Jackie stretched and hopped up and around Andy to grab a water bottle. âBut itâs working out. Thereâs land being returned, money in our hands, and food about to be on our table. Youâre doinâ what a Chief is supposed to do.â
Andy scoffed and started to object. âIâm no Chief-â
Jackie gave his shoulder a slap and grinned evilly as a starburst of pain and burning cut through the painkillers, shutting Andy up mid-protest. âYou keep saying you arenât, but that donât make it true.â She resumed her seat as Andy fought the yowl of pain back so as not to give her the satisfaction. âI mean, case in point, what are you going to do with all these fish Grammieâs catching for us right now?â
Andy blinked a few times as he regained his composure and thought seriously about his answer. âWeâll pull fifteen for the gathering they got invited to⌠Then all the fish you can pack into the truck goes to the Exiles. The rest? Iâll call Chuck and get some folks from the Council to claim the rest and distribute it to the families that need it.â
Jackie deepened her voice and adopted a cowboy drawl. âHe never eats until he sees the pots are full of meat in the lodges of the widows and orphans-â
âThatâs Comanche Law, not Salish, and thatâs from a John Wayne movie, you ass.â Andy huffed and Jackie giggled wickedly, flipped him off.
âStill havenât refuted my point, cuz.â Jackieâs singsong voice caused Andy to glare spitefully at her, until she raised her hands defensively. âAlright, youâre not a Chief. So, Not Chief Tsuâtitsiâuqw; you need to get your hands dirty and lead a raid. Iâll scrape up what we need and scout the target. You just meet up with us Saturday night at the Snoqualmish Casino and Iâll put a gun in your hands. Donât worry, weâll only get dirty enough to make the Council happy.â
âIâll be a bit late; Iâm escorting them to the Hwatcom Family Gathering on Friday.â Andy took a step back as Jackie stood up and twisted a bit to stretch out.
âNo surprise there, grandpaâs an old school traditional Indian. Theyâre dummies, but theyâre trying to do right by us, finally. Again, thanks to you, Chie-â Andy slapped the back of her head hard and growled at her, but she just started laughing, making him even madder.
âAlright, enough. Letâs get on the bow and not look like weâre sketchy Indians plotting to attack an Imperial fort.â Andy snarled, shoving her past him while she just kept laughing.
Andy stomped forward, aware of the wet sounds his boots made as he walked. Kalai turned and smiled at him as he moved to stand beside her and her father. âSo how are they doing out there?â
âThey just started their attack. This is fascinating! Their coordination, their ingenuity, and adaptation to human activity is astounding! I wish I had brought observation drones!â Sakalbi was glued to the binoculars and holding her omnipad up while she muttered observations into the speaker. Andy was content to watch as the pod put on a repeat performance and the net sagged again until they all came up and started swimming lazily around the net and the boat. All of them except Butterball and one of his older brothers. The two seemed to be getting into a jumping contest.
âHeâs feeling a bit hyper. Must be nice to be full,â Jackie commented as the two whales took turns jumping out of the water and twisting in the air. Andy smiled and nodded and felt a hand go to his shoulder. He looked down and saw it was Kalai making eyes at him. Andy hid the grimace at the burn and gave her a wink.
âThat oneâs getting closer, should we be concerned?â Andy looked over at Dr. Heâosforos and Kalai quickly moved her hand as they watched Butterball getting closer and closer with each jump.
Jackie hopped up and straddled the railing as Andy and Kalai shared a concerned look. Jackie hooked a hand around one of the roller horns and peered down into the water. âI donât think so, I mean he knows weâre-â
The sudden appearance of a flying adolescent Orca only a scant few feet away from the boat right next to the lot of them cut Jackie off. Most of them only had enough time to watch the little playful bastard hang in the air for a moment before he twisted to almost shoulder punch the water as he came back down. Andy had just enough presence of mind to pull Kalai and her father down, and braced himself as the plume of water rose from where Butterball landed.
âOh shi-â Andy heard Jackie say before water cascaded down on them and drenched them all, sending the boat rocking violently.
It took a moment for Andy to recover and he helped the two Shil back to their feet. âQuick check, is everyone alright?â
âHEY! WHAT THE HELL, BUTTERBALL! GRAMMIE! YOU HAVE A TALK WITH YOUR GRANDSON! HEâS GONNA GET SOMEONE KILLED ONE OF THESE DAYS!â Jackie screamed at the water, shaking her fist.
A camera shutter sounded and a dripping wet Mrs. Vaida stood, wide eyed in fear, staring out over the water.
Andy started laughing at the sight of his boss soaked to the bone, her hair and her fur a dripping mess. âThat picture right there? You can title it: âAngry Native Woman Yells at Whale.ââ
Kalai looked like she was on Krekâs doorstep. Akilâeas knelt next to her as he finished his examination and was looking over the readings on his omnipad. His daughter sat in front of the cabin on the little step, legs splayed out in front of her while she leaned against the railing on the side of the boat. Her father stood next to her as he finished a quick check of her vitals and her viral load.
âUnsurprisingly, youâre a bit elevated, but given your numbers over the last week, thatâs saying that youâve come back up to your normal levels.â Akilâeas had been worried. When theyâd hauled in the net the second time, Kalai had stayed on the bow with the boy, Andy, while Akilâeasâd stood over the human womanâs shoulder and studied the controls.
Akilâieas had also pitched in and helped fill the hold, but when he and Sakalbi could no longer stuff them in, theyâd given up and stood out of the way. His old friend and colleague had spent the rest of the time recording, either the large predators that continued to circle and play around the boat, or the seemingly inefficient fishing practice of Andy and his people. No wonder he was so big, and his brother had been that strong. It beggared belief that their people worked at that backbreaking pace for so long, but there Andy stood, proud and tall at the end of it, while he and Sakalbi struggled to stay standing.
Akilâeas had to focus on keeping his hands from shaking and retrieved another water bottle for his exhausted daughter. Andy had them moving at a slow pace back towards a different harbor from the one theyâd left that morning. Theyâd stopped briefly at the pier theyâd started from to allow Jackie to disembark. The two humans packed all the fish that couldnât fit in the hold up to Jackieâs truck and filled the bed of it without any help. She drove off with close to a hundred fish.
Now with the deck cleared, Andy told them they were on their way to the harbor most of his Band used. The trip had been slower going than the morning had been, but only because they were riding much lower in the water than they had been.
âKing Tritonâs farewell,â Kalai muttered looking up. Akilâeas followed his daughterâs gaze up to see a flock of white and gray seabirds calling out loudly as they kept pace with the boat as it headed towards the docks.
âIt means workâs almost over. Itâs a great sound, isnât it?â Andy called out from the cabin where he sat at the helm.
Kalai shifted herself with great effort to look around the door to the cabin. âIt sounds amazing.â
The smile Andy gave Kalai caused Akilâeas to have a pang of fatherly protectiveness, and only fatigue kept the scowl off his face. âJust wait, weâll clean a few once weâve off-loaded to the families. Fresh salmon tonight for everyone, and Iâm cooking! Doc, weâd love to have you, too.â
âIâd love to but-â
Kalai grabbed his arm and stopped him. âTrust me, Papa, you donât want to miss it.â
Akilâeas chewed his tongue for a moment, looking from Andy to Kalai. Sakalbi caught his eye and nodded emphatically. âAlright, if youâll allow me to help. You must be exhausted.â
Andy beamed at Akilâeas, âYou wonât hear me turn down free help.â
âVaascon fellas donât have no frills, Haul away, haul away! Theyâre plain and skinny as a lodthfish gill, And weâre bound away for Vaasconia!â
Kalai sat back and started singing between sips of water. Akilâeas sat down next to her and joined in the chorus for a Vaascon sailing song. It was strange to think that these humans also sang to their sea gods to placate them and coordinate the work. What else could you expect from a sailorman? Some things call to the soul across time and evidently even the gulf space and peoples.
âSo heave him up my Turry Turry girls, Haul away, haul away! Heave him up and let the sails unfurl! And weâre bound away for Vaasconia!â
Andyâs voice joining in on the chorus startled Akilâeas and Kalai and they both turned to look back at him.
He gave them another wide grin, âI started learning some of the sail songs after Kalai told me about sailing on Shil.â
âAkilâeas, a word?â Sakalbi motioned with her head towards the bow and offered him a hand up. He followed her to the bow, leaving the two children singing together.
The harbor mouth was coming up fast, and between the noise of the engine and the net drum keeping them out of sight, there was some privacy. âIâve heard some rumors about your feelings toward humansâŚâ Sakalbi leaned against the railing, giving him the look that every teacher and professor had when questioning a belligerent student. When Akilâeas didnât answer her, save to throw her back his own look, she continued. âKalai is quite taken with Andy. Itâs been quite a refreshing thing to see her come out of her shell.â
âItâs a vacation romance, nothing more.â Akilâeas felt his stomach clench and couldnât stop himself from looking back.
âI donât think so, Akilâeas. This is the first time Iâve seen her so on thorns and thistles around anyone, much less a male. Sheâs been very keen around him.â The smile she gave him was a bit galling, but he had to admit, he didnât really know Kalai as well as Sakalbi and her spouses.
âHe is⌠Iâm sure he is a very nice young man, but as a fit consort for a soon to be Duchess? No, and Iâve yet to meet a human that is.â The thought of a human becoming the next Duke Heâosforos was absurd. Sure there had been the occasional non-Shil Kho-liebhaberin or even the one Duke Aurarâian Heâosforos who was a Triki, but a human? âTheyâre far too individualistic and self centered to rise to the responsibilities of the Peerage.â
âThatâs not exactly as large a sample size as you think it is, Leas. If you had Andy in your class, or on your crew, disregarding the fact that heâs human, what would your read on him be?â
Akilâeas locked his jaw and pursed his lips, defiantly. âI donât know.â
âCome on, Leas, youâre better than me at reading people, and Iâm damn good at it.â He hated how Sakalbiâs eyes flashed and her right ear would twitch when she thought she had the upper hand in an argument. He huffed a sigh and decided to play her little game, just to humor her enough so that sheâd drop the subject.
âDependable, fastidious and competent, judging by the state of his equipment and his boat. Self sacrificing, diligent, hard working, given what Iâve observed today. Heâs got a temper, but it takes a bit to get there, and heâs carrying some pretty heavy emotional scars.â Heâd not seen very much of Andy, but the old Sailing Master and Professor in him started to come out and assess the boy just as he would any of his students or junior sailors.
âThatâs my read, too. Doesnât sound so individualistic and self-centered to me. Blighted Nature, Leas, from what Iâve learned about him and his people, he broke with several of their traditions and customs to help us. Heâs stuck his neck out far further for us than we would have for him and his people, for no other reason than to try and save his homeland. Were he an Erbian on Myr or even back home in Vaasconia, thereâd be Groom-War over his hand.â
Akilâeas was a bit piqued about her statement, âWhat about your daughter? Kalai made no secret about little Sitry mooning after him, and her disapproval of their courtship.â
âShe thinks sheâs in love, and it very well might be that she is, but Kalaiâs disapproval should tell you what it tells me, given your own rather astute assessment of the man.â
âHEY DOC! TAKE THE WHEEL, I GOTTA DRUM US IN!â Andyâs voice cut their conversation short as Akilâeas turned to look back around the drum. Andy waved him back as he slowed their approach to come in. âTake us to Dock 5, straight back and to port.â
âStraight back and to larboard, aye!â Akilâeas rattled off as he traded places with Andy at the helm.
Kalai heaved herself up to stand as Andy grabbed a large leather circle and ran forward to jump up on the bow. As Akilâeas piloted the boat into the harbor and made the turn, he saw a large crowd of humans gathered on the pier and the shore. As soon as they were in sight, he watched as Andy, standing tall, began to drum a beat and vocalize, projecting his voice over the water to those on shore. Akilâeas sputtered a bit in surprise as he guided the boat slowly towards the open mooring.
âThatâs their call. His familyâs song lets the people on shore know who he is and that heâs friendly.â Kalai looked back at Akilâeas before moving inside the cabin to stand next to her father. âAll the families know it, but only he is allowed to sing it. Itâs their version of a family crest and coat of arms. Elder Hwatcom taught us about those. Thereâll be a reply in a second granting us permission to come ashore.â
There was indeed a response of drumming and singing from the assembly of humans as many started to crowd forward carrying what appeared to be coolers. Andy reappeared and took the controls back and reversed to kill their forward momentum as Sakalbi threw out their mooring lines to the waiting humans. Andy killed the engine and moved quickly out of the cabin to speak in a language that Akilâeas did not recognize. There seemed to be a bit of confusion from those gathered on the dock, but Andy opened the hatch to show the hold full of fish.
âDonât thank me, thank them. Sockeye and Kings to all comers, courtesy of the Vaidas and the Vaida Warren!â Andy shouted happily in Vatikre as he pulled two giant fish out by their gills and handed them off to the applauding humans.
Sakalbi managed to shoot Akilâeas a smug look before she plunged her hands into the mass of fish and began helping Andy hand them out to the people.

2023.06.04 03:30 TangentalBounce How can we claim that (ritual) cleanliness still apply when part of that law [âŚ]lepers[âŚ] A reply
We would fundamentally misunderstand the nature of Yeshua if we said He became unclean with the lepers. I cannot say He never did, for then He would cease to be human (there's still the matter of defecation), but with at least one example of uncleanness there's something to ponder. Yeshua being fully G-d, fully man had times where the fully G-d part was expressed to the extent that our human minds should be blown. I'll come at this subject from a round-about then direct approach. Since Yeshua was not a kabalistic 'wizard' having mastered a piece of paper with the divine Name on it as some have ridiculously charged, He was able to use His own power to tell Nathaniel that before coming to meet Him, he was observed by Yeshua, and knew him to be "a true son if Israel indeed in whom there is no guile" (paraphrased). Additionally, Yeshua told Kefa upon questioning who should properly pay a tax, those forcibly put to tribute, or those who were free? Yeshua told him to get the one fish in the sea that had a gold coin which could pay the tax for them both. Now Yonah also was in the belly of a big fish, but no one was prophesying where that fish should be caught and then selling him for taxes. ;) Now, when Yeshua was asleep in the boat and His talmidim woke Him, they were fearful and asked how He could sleep, He rebuked the wind and the waves. Do we not read that at the very least, a psalmist considered the wind (and perhaps the waves) messengers of G-d? So by an easy extrapolation, Yeshua commanded right then the malachim. He walked on/above the mayim chayim and caused Kefa (the rock/the stone) to do the same! The Stone who the builders rejected was not only the cornerstone that is the chief of turning the Poretz for breaking through, He is the Leper King, He is the mystery of the Garden who without the Ruach, if you enter from any other gate... you will go mad or perish He is the Aleph and Tav He is the vessel through which HaShem reduced Himself, the immaterial becoming material And when the woman with an issue of blood came trembling but to touch the kanaph, there was healing in His wings. He was not made unclean, yet the goodness and purity within Him surged from Him, lept on the devourer and took no hostage. He truly led captivity captive! Please, never forget Who you are dealing with.
Yochanan 3:14 and following
But Yochanan tried to prevent Him, saying, âI need to be immersed by You, and do You come to me?â 15 âLet it be so now,â Yeshua replied. âIt is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness in this way.â Then Yochanan permitted Him. 16 As soon as Yeshua was immersed, He went up out of the water. Suddenly the heavens were opened, and He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and resting on Him
The Living Water defiled? No, I think not. But regardless, He who knew no sin, for us became sin
5 But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon Him; and with His stripes we are healed. 6 All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the Lord hath laid on Him the iniquity of us all. 7 He was oppressed, and He was afflicted, yet He opened not his mouth: He is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so He openeth not His mouth. 8 He was taken from prison and from judgment: and who shall declare His generation? for He was cut off out of the land of the living: for the transgression of my people was He stricken. Yeshayahu 53:5-8
Lest we ever think that the one who could be termed the Leper King or prince Elisha indeed caused Naaman the Syrian general to be healed of leprosy, but he himself never even saw Naaman for which Naaman felt insulted. It is a known opinion that since the time of Miriam, no leper of Israel has ever been healed, and it would be a sign of Mashiach were it to happen. Likewise, He who is born blind to receive sight! The reason is, these are creative miracles. Elisha was on another level, drawing an axe-head to the surface of water, but Yeshua created the circuitry for lack of a better word, the infrastructure for a person blind to receive sight. He took one ravaged by a disease like gangrene and restored flesh, sinews, fascia, bone, nerves, fingernails that were missing. The Creative power of the universe was unleashed on a ravaged body of outcasts, sons and daughters of Israel. The dry bones truly became enshrined with flesh. Don't you forget it.
1 Bless the LORD, O my soul! O LORD my God, You are very great; You are clothed with splendor and majesty. 2 He wraps Himself in light as with a garment; He stretches out the heavens like a tent, 3 laying the beams of His chambers in the waters above, making the clouds His chariot, walking on the wings of the wind. 4 He makes the winds His messengers, flames of fire His servants. 5 He set the earth on its foundations, never to be moved. 6 You covered it with the deep like a garment; the waters stood above the mountains. 7 At Your rebuke the waters fled; at the sound of Your thunder they hurried awayâ 8 the mountains rose and the valleys sank to the place You assigned for themâ 9 You set a boundary they cannot cross, that they may never again cover the earth. 10 He sends forth springs in the valleys; they flow between the mountains. 11 They give drink to every beast of the field; the wild donkeys quench their thirst. 12 The birds of the air nest beside the springs; they sing among the branches. 13 He waters the mountains from His chambers; the earth is satisfied by the fruit of His works. 14 He makes the grass grow for the livestock and provides crops for man to cultivate, bringing forth food from the earth: 15 wine that gladdens the heart of man, oil that makes his face to shine, and bread that sustains his heart. 16 The trees of the LORD have their fill, the cedars of Lebanon that He planted, 17 where the birds build their nests; the stork makes her home in the cypresses. 18 The high mountains are for the wild goats, the cliffs a refuge for the rock badgers. 19 He made the moon to mark the seasons; the sun knows when to set. 20 You bring darkness, and it becomes night, when all the beasts of the forest prowl. 21 The young lions roar for their prey and seek their food from God. 22 The sun rises, and they withdraw; they lie down in their dens. 23 Man goes forth to his work and to his labor until evening. 24 How many are Your works, O LORD! In wisdom You have made them all; the earth is full of Your creatures. 25 Here is the sea, vast and wide, teeming with creatures beyond number, living things both great and small. 26 There the ships pass, and Leviathan, which You formed to frolic there. 27 All creatures look to You to give them their food in due season. 28 When You give it to them, they gather it up; when You open Your hand, they are satisfied with good things. 29 When You hide Your face, they are terrified; when You take away their breath, they die and return to dust. 30 When You send Your Spirit, they are created, and You renew the face of the earth. 31 May the glory of the LORD endure forever; may the LORD rejoice in His works. 32 He looks on the earth, and it trembles; He touches the mountains, and they smolder. 33 I will sing to the LORD all my life; I will sing praise to my God while I have my being. 34 May my meditation be pleasing to Him, for I rejoice in the LORD. 35 May sinners vanish from the earth and the wicked be no more. Bless the LORD, O my soul. Hallelujah!

2023.06.03 19:53 Biquasquibrisance Possibility of utilising the explosivity in the pouring of molten salt into water to obtain a scaled-up pop-pop engine.
A major obstacle to scaling-up the classical toy
pop-pop boat ,
, is the difficulty of flash-boiling an amount of water that's atall substantial.
But then I recall something about there being a certain 'affinity' between salt & water such that when molten salt enters water, there's
a complete absence of any
'Leidenfrost' effect, or anyother of the normal mechanisms that slow-down the transfer of heat to water from a hot object suddenly immersed in it,
So it occured to me that we could have a kind of
marine pulse-jet engine , that has a reservoir of molten salt, & a boiler & arrangement of pipes somewhat like the engine of a pop-pop boat, but scaled-up ... and at the part of each cycle at which the boiler is just filled-up, a valve opens & injects some molten salt into the water in the boiler.
It's very fortunate that the substance that's suited to this to a degree that possibly no-other substance is
more , & few are
as much , is
ordinary common salt . Pollution
could possibly just marginally be a problem in a lake - maybe also, but
less so in a river (I'm not sure how much harm
a bit of salt wreaks-upon freshwater life-forms) ... but obviously
in the sea pollution would be
no issue atall .

2023.06.03 18:37 Tr0utL1lly Favorite moderate day hike/boat trip suggestions?
We have camping reservations for late June one night each: Fish Creek, Many Glacier, St. Mary's, Two Medicine, Devil's Creek - plan to tent camp and day hike.
Have been reading about trails for months! We hike 5 miles on rolling terrain a few times a week- and hike 10ish miles once a month or so. Glacier is certainly more challenging and has more gradient than our eastern rolling hills, I think we are "moderate" hikers. Hope to take a couple longer hikes (10ish miles) with shorter easier hikes on days between.
Suggestions for favorite moderate hikes close to these campgrounds? The various boat trips look beautiful - which are "do not miss"? Other suggestions?
We visited Glacier 35 years ago - remember it being gorgeous and not very busy/crowded. Sounds like the crowds have exploded - definitely had to work to reserve campsites, where before we simply camped at the closest site. I do not remember which hikes we took that trip, traveled with more knowledgeable friends.

I do work full time, just starting a new job. I do enjoy to cook and bbq and would love someone who is also capable of cooking and or can bring something new to the table. Visiting from Arizona and looking to rent a small under 20 foot boat next week. Just got my year fishing license, where can I find a boat?
Little Jon boat or aluminum with trolling motor and graph would be ideal. Maybe even a kayak? Crystal lake has rentals but I'm not sure I know how to fish that lake, hoping to trailer up to smaller Lakes.

2023.06.03 15:20 Jakimcikas First time japan travel report 04.25-05.17
Alrighty, I'll describe my first time travel in japan, what went well, what didn't go well, my overall impression of Japan. We travelled trough quite a few cities, but I'll try to keep it as short as possible as I'm not much of writer. And we've visited quite a few places, so if you'd like more details, comment and I'll go more in-depth :).
A bit about the travelling party. Me(25M) and a work colleague(26M), Lithuanians(Europe) software engineers, reasonably fit and somewhat fluent in english, Omnivores(my colleague is allergic to cheese), our height is around Âą185cm.
TL;DR
Cities/islands visited
Tokyo(Shinjuku) -> Osaka -> Nara -> Kyoto -> Onomichi Islands -> Matsuyama -> Hiroshima -> Miyajima -> Kumamoto -> Aso(region) -> Fukuoka -> Nagasaki -> Nagoya -> Takayama -> Magome -> Matsumoto - > Tokyo(Chuo) -> Tokyo(Shibuya) -> Tokyo(Teito) -> Hakone.
Expenses
I was slightly more conservative with my spending so my expenses are on the cheaper side, my colleague spent quite a bit more, especially on food and booze.
Total amount spent: slightly more than 3k euros in japan + 1.1k euros flights back and forth.
EDIT:
Daily food expenses: 30-40 eur or 5k-7k yen. Daily food expenses: 3k-4k Daily travel fares(bus, metro), museums and other activities: 1k-3k
Average hotel stay: ~60euro
Food: - Breakfast - usually something from a convenience store. Chicken, power gels, chocolate, melon bread(my favourite), - Lunch - something from a convenience store or a restaurant - Dinner - restaurant usually a ramen place
Activities
Museums, castles, shrines, forests, mountains, walks around the city. We did a lot of walking, total around 400km of walking(at leasts that's what google fit shows)
Alright that's a brief summary, now for the more in-depth write up.
My key takeaways
- Japan is a very safe country, I felt safe everywhere, even in the shady parts of Tokyo.
- People are very polite, they'll go out of their way to help you, even if they don't speak english.
- People are very quiet, you won't hear people talking on the phone, or talking loudly in public transport.
- Be polite, if you don't understand or thing that this is not how it should be, don't be rude, just accept it and move on. You are an alien in their country, not the other way around. So please don't ever raise your voice, japanese people are not malicious, they'll try to help you, but they might not understand you.
- If you want to feel appreciated, learn at least the basics on japanese, it's not that hard, and it'll make your life easier. I did it through doulingo, reached unit 14 in a month and that was sufficient to have very simple conversation.
This is it for the TL;DR part. I'll go more in-depth for the rest of the post.
Planning for the trip
We started planning the trip, where we'll go, where we'll stay, what we'll do, expenses, trains, all that you can plan was started to be planned around a month prior to the trip. We created a word doc as our itinerary, that was around 60 pages long. From what I've read on this page about you can't plan everything. Well I believe we did, we might've even over planned :D.
So we booked the following hotels: - Tokyo - Apa Hotel Higashi Shinjuku Kabukicho Tower(04.25-04.26) - Osaka - APA Hotel Namba Kita Shinsaibashi Ekimae(04.26-04.30) - Onomichi island - TOMARIGI Hostel(04.30-05.01) - Matsuyama - Hotel Patio Dogo(05.01-05.02) - Hiroshima - Wholeearth Ryokan Hiroshima(05.02-05.04) - Kumamoto - Hotel Wing International Select Kumamoto(05.04-05.08) - Nagoya - Sotetsu Fresa Inn Nagoya Shinkansenguchi(05.08-05.10) - Magoame - Magomechaya(05.10-05.11) - Matsumoto - Hotel M Matsumoto(05.11-05.12) - Tokyo - APA Hotel Ginza Kyobashi Tokyo Station Yaesu South Gate(05.14-05.17)
Extra things we bought in advance: - Water proof bags - Hiking boots and socks - Bigger backpacks - JP Rail pass, we booked the trains in advance, but honestly that wasn't necessary even during golden week - Bandages for foot blisters, medicine(for headaches, motion sickness, diarrhoea). - Ubigi eSim internet(10GB was plenty for me throughout the trip) - Sun screen(did not use and got sunburned to a point where I was shinning red) - Portable battery
The trip
Day 1(04.25)
We arrived at the Haneda aiport, exchanged some cash to yen(was at a better course than locally), printed out our JR passes(
IMPORTANT TO DO SO HERE, only major stations let you print it out) and went to the metro. We took the train to Shinjuku, and walked to our hotel to check-in. We were quite tired, bought some chicken from lawson and went to explore a few places, a few drinks in golden gai district and ramen in a nearby place. Eventually we ended up at rock bar mother. Really cool place, for each drink you can request 2 songs to be played. After that back to hotel, visit the top floor onsen and sleep
Day 2(04.26)
Got up early, travelled to osaka. Left our luggage in the hotel, we were too early for a check in. We went to see Osaka castle(quite beautiful), tried takoyaki there. More city exploring, then we went check-in. After that we went to see the Umeda Sky Building in the evening(we bought the ticket in advance) very beautiful, it was very clear and beautiful. Got back to the city, got some ramen, went to the hotel and sleep.
Day 3(04.27)
Went to USJ, bought tickets(basic, no express stuff) in advance. We went there 30minutes before opening, and there was already a huge line. We went to Nintendo first, the zone looked very nice, but ride it'd say was okay'ish for me. After that the dinosaur rides, minion land, grabbed chinese food for lunch, went to the harry potter zone, at this point the lines got quite long around 1h to 1h 30min of wait time. After that we went to see Water world where they were doing a play, was really awesome, I'd say a must see even if you don't understand Japanese, the acting is very good. After that we went to Osaka aquarium(no lines, thank god), it was beautiful, cute chonks and other sea creatures.
Day 4(04.28)
Trip to Kyoto from Osaka. We went early by metro, to see the bamboo forest(7:40'ish), beautiful, few people. Walked around the park then climbed the mount a fed the monkeys(50 yen for a bag of fruits or nuts), very cute, tried petting the hand of one, didn't go well got an aggressive show of teeth. After that we visited Ryoanji temple, went to nishi market, we we're running a bit late so we took a taxi to Kiyomizudera, we saw the geish district on our way to there, looked interesting. After the temple we went to a bar and got back to Osaka and then after a bowl of ramen to our hotel.
Day 5(04.29)
We went to Nara, took this hiking
track saw the deer, bought some food, did the whole bow thing then fed them. One thing to keep in mind is to crumble the cookie and give it in small pieces, otherwise you'll run out of food to give quickly. They might be very "assertive" and try to take it from you, don't be afraid, just stick your empty arm out to get some distance and that's it . They're not gonna bite you. After that we went to see the Todaiji temple, it was beautiful, the buddha statue was huge. Got back to Osaka, got some ramen, went to the hotel, scheduled to send our luggage to our next hotel and went to sleep.
Day 6(04.30)
Got up early, went to Onomichi, rented some bikes and began our cycling journey through the islands. A lot of cool bridges, very beautiful nature. We cycled to north Omishima port, where we transfered to rabbit island pet and fed the rabbits, got back and cycled to our ryokan and straight to sleeping.
Day 7(05.01)
More cycling, more cool bridges, more beautiful nature. We arrived at Imabari, returned our bikes and took the train to Matsuyama. We ate some stree food, relaxed in the open hot springs for feet. Walked around and went to sleep. To be honest I'd say this was the favorite city of the whole trip for me. I liked the vibe, the people, the food, the nature, the onsen, the layout, the architecture. In general, beautiful city.
Day 8(05.02)
Early in the morning visited a public onsen nearby, then went to see the Matsuyama castle, it was beautiful, tried the orange juice there, it was really good, got back to our hotels, got some dango. Packed our stuff, got a taxi and went to the port and took the ferry to Hiroshima. Checked in the ryokan. Took a train to Hiroshima city center, visited the castle and then the nuclear museum. Get the english audio for best experience. It took me around 2hours to walk through everything, read it and take it in. It was very nerve racking, but I'd say a must see. After that we went out to eat some Okonomiyaki, it was delicious, then back to the ryokan and sleep.
Day 9(05.03)
Went to Miyajima island first by train then transfer by ferry. It was very beautiful, the mountain hike was also fun, the view on top was amazing. When we came down from the mountain there was a low tide, so we could go near the Itsukushima shrine. Got back to Hiroshima, went to the city center for a couple of beers, got back to Ryokan and went to sleep.
Day 10(05.04)
First day of the Golden week, wouldn't say that I've noticed anything different, maybe because we were travelling to the far south of Japan - Kumamoto. This is one of those cities that I also enjoyed more than the big common ones, it looked very nice, had a beautiful castle, was not crowded as Hiroshima, Osaka or Tokyo. We rented out bikes, cycled to Honmoji park(the place near Honmoji park is god damn maze, keep you google maps always open or you will get lost) found a place to eat, visited Lafcadio Hearn House and went to our hotel and then to sleep.
Day 11(05.05)
We rentend a car and went to Aso, highly recommend renting a car here, since the public transport is not that good. The drive was very nice, we went to see active volcano crater, luckily it was not erupting, so we were allowed to get close. Then we went around and climbed the other inactive mountain caps. Climbing that was one of the most fun hikes I've had. It was very windy, you could barely see past 5 meters anywhere, because of the fog. There was no smell of sulfur, so it was safe. We visited Mt. Nakadake, Mt. Takadake, overall the place looked like Mordor, the vibes, the weather everything. After that we visited Ayugaeno Falls, the ravines and everything was just majectic. After that we got back to Kumamoto, gave back the car and went somewhere to eat. Car rental cost around ~7k yen in total. So I'd say a good price. After eating, we went to our hotel and then to sleep.
Day 12(05.06)
We went to Fukuoka, by train, walked around the city, visited Tochoji temple, Fukuoka castle ruins, Ohori park and explored the huge ravine type shopping mall. Went to the science museum(big mistake, it's for kids...). After that we tried Ichiran ramen(originated in Fukuoka so we thought it be better). Was the same as everywhere else. It was rainy so we got back pretty early to our hotel and went to sleep.
Day 13(05.07)
We went to Nagasaki, by train, visited the atomic bomb museum, it was very interesting, just as good as the one in Hiroshima. We took a boat ride to see Gunkanjima, though we couldn't get on the island, because of the weather, it was still very interesting to see and hear the history of the island. Explored the Dutch district, walked around the shops, tried some whale meat. It was raining the whole day, so we also got back quite early and went to sleep.
Day 14(05.08)
We got up early and went got straight to the train station, and caught the train to Nagoya. The longest train ride by far. We arrived at Nagoya, checked in our hotel, went to the city center, visited the castle, it was very beautiful, then we wanted to explore the abandoned tunnel near Aichi. Apparently it was closed, we decided we're going to enter through the exit, like rascals, but apparently after we circled around there was a police officer that was guarding traffic through the bridge and wouldn't let us through. So our trip ended there. After comming back to Nagoya we visited the sky scrapper, it had interesting installations on the windows. We had our stay got back to hotel and went to sleep.
Day 15(05.09)
We went to Takayama, by train, one of the most scenic train rides so far. We strolled around the city center, visited the early morning market, bought some souvenirs, tried some white strawberries, mushroom tee and other local cuisine. Visited Takayama Showa Museum, which was 10/10. You could touch almost everything, the museum gave a great vibe, it was like you were in a house of a family that lived there. There was also an old nintendo with mario kart that you could play, put on a old yukata and take photos. Play pachinko(no money needed), watch an old-school movie. We visited a few sake tasting places, I've found a few flavours that I liked. After that back to Nagoya, eat ramen and sleep.
Day 16(05.10)
We sent out our luggage to Matsumoto, caught a train to Nagiso and then hiked the Nakasendo trail to Tsumago and then Magome where we checked in and stayed at the local ryokan. The hike was very nice and relaxing one of the easier hikes I've had, the places we saw we're quite old and beautiful. At ryokan we met people one American and one from Germany, they had a guitar so we chatted a bit, played the guitar and had a few beers. The dinner at ryokan was amazing, looked very traditional Japanese dinner. Was also very tasty, would definitely recommend this place. After that we went to sleep.
Day 17-19(05.11)
Got up early and took a bus to Nakatsugawa Eki-mae station where we travelled to Matsumoto. We left our bags and went to the RubyKaigi conference. Overall good conference, I've learned somethings, but most importantly I've had bit of time to rest and catch up on some sleep, since we weren't exploring new cities. So overall the following 3 days were wake up -> breakfast -> conference -> lunch -> conference -> drinks -> dinner -> sleep.
Day 20(05.14)
Slept in, had breakfast and travelled to Tokyo by train. Left our luggage at the hotel and moved on to explore the Chou region. Walked around the Ginza, Imperial palace, Yasukuni shrine and went to check in. After that it was getting dark, so travelled to Akihabara to experience the anime night life, was quite bright and interesting. Though the amount of requests to visit a maid cafe was too damn high. If your planning to buy a PS5, a new GPU or Nintendo switch, this could be the place, I saw PS5 with two controllers for 60k yen, with a 10% tax refund that is around 370 euros. After some exploration, got back to our hotel and went to sleep.
Day 21(05.15)
This was our Hakone day trip, we bought the 3 day pass for it, so we could use the train, bus, ropeway and boat. Was worth it, even for one day. We climbed Mt. Kintoki, thankfully the weather was great and we could see Fuji. The climb was very nice, the view was amazing, the weather was great, no bears to be seen. After climbing down, we played some golf that was near there. Travelled back to the station were we used the rope-way to get around the mountains, the view was just majestic, we saw the sulfur pits, the stench was, well strong to say the least, but overall enjoyed the experience. We didn't make it time to the boat, so we had to travel back by bus, which wasn't so bad, since the scenery was amazing.
Day 22(05.16)
Explored more Tokyo, so we went to Teito district, went to the Ueno zoo, National science museum. After that we went to Kaminarimon gate, Asakusa shrine and moved to Shibuya next. There we went to the Yoyogi park, Meiji Jingu shrine, paid our respects to Hachiko statue. The last activity was to visit TeamLabs Planets, which were amazing, one most interesting experiences, not gonna spoil any details, overall great experience, would do it again. As it was getting late we got back to Shibuya, walked around more, had a drink and went back to our hotel.
Day 23(05.17)
Last day in Japan was spent buying souvenirs, snacks and other stuff to bring back home. Packing our luggage, to accommodate for the extras, getting to Haneda airport and back to Lithuania.
I'm very happy I had the opportunity to go on such a trip, I enjoyed it a lot even though, I'm quite the couch potato so 3 weeks is a bit much for me, but nonetheless, wouldn't change a thing.

2023.06.03 04:54 FTO12345 Apartment Lease Addendum MANDATORY
Hi! Looking for some help. I live in Las Vegas NV. Iâve lived in the same apartment for 5 years. When we moved on there was an extra charge on our monthly payment for âtechnology packageâ. What this entailed was internet and cable tv was added to our lease monthly as provided by the apartment complex. I didnât have a choice as this was a âmandatoryâ part of their lease and if we wanted to live here, we had to sign it. No big deal we talked about it and signed it no problem. About a year ago they cancelled that contract and had us sign a lease addendum saying they were now only providing internet and had to install hardware in our unit so we could use it. We were told wether we used it or not we would be charged for it and they were installing the hardware no matter what. Not to rock the boat we signed as we didnât feel the fight was worth hassle of declining to sign.
In the last month the apartment has told us they were making upgrades to our unit. They are installing a keypad lock system that can be network opened, a sensor in our washing machine closet, a sensor on the kitchen sink and a new smart thermostat. The idea of these features are nice but the deeper I get into the fine details the more I feel like I shouldnât sign the addendum to approve to be a part of the program. The deadbolt they are using is easily hacked and I feel uneasy about giving the access to my apartment to the leasing office. As I read the terms from the company that is providing the service to me and the apartment complex, it says they do not sell my data but are collecting a record of everything I do. Webpages visited, browsing history, time spent on each site, etc. It makes me feel uneasy as Iâm being told (by leasing office of apartments) they are not collecting that data but it says in their terms that are linked to the addendum paperwork that they are. If they are not using these data points to enhance my experience using their app and theyâre not selling my data, why are they collecting this data? Why would I willingly give them access to my information?
I stopped by the office today as they came by when I was not home because they wanted me to sign the addendum. I told them that I was not planning on signing as I had concerns. When I brought up my concerns I was told it was mandatory and I donât have a choice. I will be forced to sign or I will be locked out of my apartment. If it is mandatory and legal for them to do this why am I signing a addendum to my current lease? If I didnât have a choice why are they giving me one?
On a side note, my wife signed the addendum when it came through about a month ago without realizing what it was. Am I SOL because she already signed it? Weâre both on the lease and Iâm not sure what to do. Any help is appreciated.
Edit: I should ask my questions.
1.is it legal for them to force us to sign?
I feel like I should have the freedom to choose but also understand this is their property. That being said I have a problem with anyone telling me what Iâm doing especially after raising what I consider to be valid concerns.
- What options would I have if I donât sign?
Iâve been told theyâre installing the hardware either way but how would I know if theyâre using the hardware on my network? (Network internet is all handled by a company in another state. I have no control of anything on our network. We cannot change settings, reboot when we have issues, we must open a service ticket which usually takes anywhere from an hour to a few days to fix). I feel like once installed they could still be using our network to monitor things in my apartment even though I didnât consent.
- Iâm worried about what happens when I move. I wouldnât want them to be a negative reference when we move. Not sure we can buy and if they are the most current reference Iâm afraid any pushback on my part now will directly effect what they tell someone when I try to get my next apartment/rental.
Thank you for making it this far.

2023.06.03 04:32 -throughline- Vacation Rental Charing Etiquette
Hey all! Just curious since Iâm in this boat right nowâŚ
For those of you that rent a vacation rental (Airbnb, cabin, etc.), if the house rules or guidelines donât specifically mention EV charging but there is an outlet available to plug into (even 15amps) do you ask permission or just charge?
How important is the availability of an EV-accessible plug to you? Would you pay extra for the convenience?

2023.06.03 04:09 Freebird529 Perception Showdown Or Recon 120HD?
In the market for my first kayak - been inshore and offshore fishing for years but Iâd like to hit some saltwater flats and would prefer to be more active than sitting on a boatâŚ
Iâve read a lot of great threads here in both, watched a ton of vids, but still very back and forth. Price is close enough to be unimportant. Looking to mostly stay in little creek/pretty lake, a tributary that feeds the Chesapeake near the mouth. However would like to hit the Elizabeth River, occasional Chesapeake, other locations in Virginia Beach, and take it down to Florida when I visit my folks.
Healthy 30-something male, will get a cart, but not overly worried about launching weight wise. More focused on stability and fishability. Would like to bring my 3yo if staying close to the house as he loves to fish. Would still like to occasionally break out the paddle for some exercise and adventure.
Between the two, the recon seems to be the better choice, but the showdown just looks better and more stable. Anyone been on both or can offer a more informed opinion? TIA

2023.06.03 01:44 Canoe_do_that Virginia is for History Lovers
| In the past two years, my friend and I have been visiting Civil War battlefields and historic sites in our area. Here are some of my favorite spots. We plan on increasing our range to make it up to Gettysburg and Antietam soon. Itâs been an absolute blast. Chancellorsville and Fredericksburg was our best trip. We had hoped to make it to Wilderness and Spotsylvania but spent too much time at Chatham Manor, Maryeâs Height and the museum within the visitor centers to make it. No regrets. Canât wait to go back to finish that loop! If you havenât made it out to Petersburg, do it now! The crater is amazing. I wish I could find my photos of that. The city is an a state of serious decay but there is so much history left raw there. Iâd love to hear some thoughts on favorite spots and suggestions on VA, NC and MD sites! submitted by Canoe_do_that to CIVILWAR [link] [comments] |
2023.06.02 23:08 Globnosis Moving frog spawn
Every year I have tree frogs that lay their spawn in my brothers boats. I usually try transporting them to another pond but itâs getting tedious. The creek in my yard would just sweep them away and larger fish would get them.
Five months ago I took two small storage bins, probably 5 gallons each, and filled them with creek mud and water as a little experiment. So far theyâve been thriving and are full of plants and small critters.
Would the frog spawn be ok in these containers? Theyâre full of algae and other plants so the tadpoles would have food and hides

2023.06.02 21:28 Arcanum3000 ~10 mph winds/up to 25 mph gusts: Too much for a sheltered, slow-moving creek?
I bought an Oru Bay ST during the Memorial Day sale, along with a bunch of bits and bobs, and was hoping to get out this weekend. There's a meandering, slow-moving creek near me that I was planning to paddle on, but the forecast is saying the wind is going to be up a bit. It's pretty well sheltered by trees. (Black Creek in Monroe County NY, if anyone is familiar with it.)
I've gone paddling a handful of times, including a basic class, and I've taken to it well, but this would be a first trip solo in an unfamiliar boat. I'm a decent swimmer, the creek is neither particularly wide nor fast moving, and I'd be wearing a PFD. While I'd prefer it, getting a buddy to go isn't in the cards.
Thoughts? Should I scrub the outing, or will the wind likely not be a big issue?

2023.06.02 18:08 redbluebooks [Warrior Cats RP] The Spirit Animal Club, or: I Want to Get Off Jason the Evil Polar Bearâs Wild Ride
Whatâs the result when a bunch of teenagers
make shit up for their creative writing exercises all meditate and have dreams about spirit animal guides, and post on a talking cat roleplay forum about it?
An evil polar bear that tries to kill you.
This is the third write-up Iâve made about Virtual Warrior World, a Proboards roleplay forum based on the Warrior Cats book series by Erin Hunter, which Iâve already covered in these two
previous posts. Some forum members I mentioned in the first post also show up here, as youâll see later. (You donât have to read any of the other posts to get whatâs going on here, but the first gives more in-depth context.)
Spirit Animals A spirit animal, also known as a totem, is a sacred guide that can take the form of an animal and is seen as a protector. Spirit animals are important in many cultures, including certain Native American ones (such as the Ojibwe). They also tend to be appropriated by neopagans, New Age hippies, and white American teenagers.
Obligatory disclaimer time: I donât know anything about spirit animals other than whatâs written about them on Wikipedia. This writeup is NOT intended to mock anyoneâs spiritual or religious beliefs, nor make a claim that such cultural beliefs around spirit animals are inherently âfakeâ or âimaginaryâ. Itâs important to note that nobody in this club (as far as I know) was Native American or indigenous, nobody performed religious rites or even acknowledged such aspects, and several members years after the fact admitted that they had been making the whole thing up and never saw any spirit guides, animal or otherwise. This writeup is all in the spirit (no pun intended) of fun, and is not in any way supposed to be commentary on real religions or cultures.
Now thatâs out of the way, letâs talk about the club itself.
The Spirit Animal Club On VWW, there was a section dedicated to clubs that members could make about their interests. The site admin, Jai, made a fair few clubs of her own and created sub-boards for them (one of them was a fan club for The Lonely Island, whom you might know as the masterminds behind such iconic hits as âJizz in My Pantsâ and âIâm On a Boatâ); if your club got popular enough, she would make a board for it too. So there were clubs dedicated to the usual subjects: debate, writing, gaming, anime, the LGBTQ+ community, etc.
One particularly notable club was the spirit animal club, which a (white) member named Abby (whose character was Skyflight) came up with and Jai made a board for. The clubâs actual name was âAnimal Spirit Guides Clubâ, but because that was too clunky, everybody just called it the spirit animal club.
The club was about
who could write the most creative story about yourself and your favorite animal finding your spirit animal and connecting with other members who were communing with theirs. You didnât have to have your own spirit guide to join; anybody could sign up, but the point of joining was that you would somehow find it eventually.
Abbyâs spirit animal was a hawk named Farrow; Jaiâs was an eagle named Baldwin. Most spirit animals were âcoolâ or âprettyâ animals in that vein, such as tigers, cheetahs, foxes, bears, panthers, deer, horses, robins, swans, ravens, and wolves (that last one was
particularly common, for some reasonâŚ). Rare were the outliers: one had a boa constrictor as their spirit guide. Another had a clownfish. And absolutely no one had, say, a slug or a mole rat as their spirit animal.
The club was divisive: it was pretty popular at its peak (around fifty-nine members!), but it had its naysayers who wanted to get rid of it. The most vocal of them was Mike (the resident gay admin who hated his job for a myriad of reasons), who
knew thought the whole thing was a creative writing exercise and (by his own admission) also sort of, kind of wanted it gone out of spite. He might have succeeded if it had been smaller or less popular, but because Jai herself was a member, it stayed.
Other than that, everything was smooth sailing. Discussions centered on how to meditate to find your spirit animal, what your spirit animal was like, what your spirit animal told you today, what your spirit animal ate for breakfastâŚokay, not that last one, but you get the idea.
One memorable
thread discussed past lives: Steph (the staffer who later helped with the hack of VWW) claimed she had been a Native American girl in a Seneca tribe who drowned in a river when she was around twelve to fourteen. Another member named Jenny
said she had once lived in ancient Greece and died when she fell from a cliff. Abby had a whole
saga about how in her past life, she had been an ancient Egyptian princess who was murdered by her stepmother for challenging her authority, and she had an evil older brother and an older sister (no word on whether or not the sister was evil too), and her father was the Pharaoh for a short time (which somehow explained Abbyâs bad relationship with her own dad), and her mother had been one of the Pharaohâs concubines, so her stepmother was hateful because she couldnât have children of her own, andâŚ
You get the idea. The thread capped off with one more member
claiming her past life had been as a First Nations girl who loved salmon and ran away from home in winter when she was twelve, then froze to death, and concluding that was why she hated wearing scarves or hats in winter.
Notice that all these past lives ended in dramatic deaths at a young
age, and nobody had died from old age or illness. That was the spirit animal club for you.
But alas, such peace could not last long. That leads us to:
One, Two, Jason's Coming for You Remember the outlier with the clownfish for a spirit guide? Her name was Jessica (she was also a staff member; her character was Sparrowfeather), her clownfish was named Chloe, and one day in October 2010, she (not the clownfish) made a
post that would change everything for the club.
In this post, she detailed how she had fallen asleep and dreamed that she was looking for Chloe. When she went to a pond, a polar bear showed up and she assumed he was a spirit guide too. She asked who he was, and he introduced himself as Jason before attacking her. Fortunately, a leopard named Amber showed up in the nick of time to protect her; unfortunately, she woke up with sore and red arms that left her scratching them. Totally befuddled by the whole thing that
definitely happened, she asked what it meant.
The first
reply was from a member named Jordan, who oh so helpfully told her that Jason was probably a âshadow guideâ (without explaining what that meant) and that she probably deserved to nearly be killed because she mustâve done something bad to warrant it! Classy. The other
replies were about the same level of usefulness, with nobody understanding where this Jason weirdo had come from.
Later, Jessica posted
again in her thread that Amber told her Jason was not her spirit animal, and that her clownfish guide, Chloe, had once been contacted by the kid Jason was supposed to guide. The kid died, Jason blamed Chloe for it, and the fish went into hiding. How exactly a clownfish from the astral plane was able to cause the death of a child went unexplained.
Abbyâs helpful
advice was that Jessica should research leopards and polar bears, and eventually confront Jason to get rid of him. She cited the fact that she and Jai had both apparently had a problem with an âevil guideâ in the past and dealt with it by confronting it, but unfortunately didnât elaborate on how that happened.
There was some radio silence for a bit, then Jessica posted
again. Her next thread was about how she had a dream of walking up a creek and encountering a panther that could shapeshift. Conveniently, she somehow realized that it was Jason, and then it turned into a polar bear and attacked her. When she called out to her spirit guide for help, Amber helpfully told her that sheâd been told not to âinterfere with destinyâ and sent her good wishes, spouted off some
poorly Google Translated random Italian, and disappeared, leaving Jessica on her own to wake up just as Jason tried to kill her again. Couldnât ask for a better spirit guide.
Jessica naturally asked her
friends what this meant; Abby
posited that the Italian that Amber had spoken was her giving Jessica her
magic energy (as it literally translates to âSecurity for the baby. Sure it will. Out of harm's way, oh, can win the battle. I am sending my will, my strength and power. Let child.â).
When Jessica
asked if Jason was an evil spirit (as anyone would do after nearly being murdered in their sleep by an evil polar bear), Abby said definitively that Jason was a lost spirit animal without a human.
All was quiet for about two months, but like any good slasher movie villain, Jason made his return (making his name even more appropriateâfunny, that). His next victim was fittingly Jordan. Jordan had (allegedly) had a
problem of his own with his spirit animals three months ago: heâd had two spirit guides, a wolf named Nightshade and a snake named Ankh, and they left him because they were âmessengersâ to herald his
real spirit animal, a snowy owl named Aurora. That wouldâve been well and good until, horror of horrors, he
dreamed that Nightshade was attacked!
He found Nightshade bleeding violet blood, which we all know talking wolves have, because Jason mauled him. Aurora, ever the helpful type, told Jordan that they could protect him from Jason for a while, but like any good heroic anime protagonist, heâd have to face Jason eventually. Apparently, Jason was a demon who fed on fear and negativity, and the only way to ward him off was to show no emotion around him. The unmentioned alternative solution would probably have been to turn your back when he tries to attack you so that heâll evaporateâŚwait, wrong slasher villain. Never mind.
Anyway, Jordanâs post did not get the attention he so desperately craved; he only got one response from another member named Zach, who told him to meditate and then wished he had his own spirit animal so he could ask them about Jason. Jordanâs
reply was to give the sage advice to everyone in the club to get away from any sign of Jason in the âphysical worldâ, which apparently includes movie posters and stuffed animals, because heâs totally an Empath⢠and can tell that, shockingly, the polar bear that keeps trying to attack people feels âanger, bloodlust, and death-urgesâ! Whoâd-a thunk it?
The next day, a girl named Carolyn
posted about how her two spirit animals had disappeared. When she encountered a polar bear, she asked him if heâd seen one of them, he introduced himself as Jason, and attacked her until a hawk showed up and scared him off. The
only advice she
got was to
meditate more, and Jordan helpfully
told her that Jason was dangerous and had raging bloodlust (just in case she might have gotten confused and thought Jason was going around to give hugs).
The thread petered out after she
claimed that the hawk told her that her previous spirit animals had left her forever, presumably to avoid dealing with any pesky bears. Ah, spirit animals. Gotta love âem.
Literally one day later, a club member named Emily piped up with a Jason
story of her own. She claimed that not only did she believe her spirit animal, a white tiger named Leila, had been with her since she was a kid, she
also believed Jason had been trying to target her back then. Apparently, she asked her mother about her childhood and whether or not polar bears had been involved, and her mother
definitely told her that Emily had once woken up, screaming, âHeâs gonna get me, the polar bear!â
So from this totally legit information, Emily drew the logical conclusion that Jason was going to try to kill her,
and she could destroy him, and like any good chosen one protagonist, only
she could do it. Somehow.
Her fellow club membersâincluding Zach and Jordanâwere not so
accepting of her radical ideas, and told her she was being paranoid and to get some sleep (because, you know, thatâs totally what you should do when you think an evil polar bearâs trying to kill you in your dreams).
Jordan added the crucial information that demons didnât focus on solely one target and sought to create as much chaos as possible, because I guess he somehow became the expert on demons in addition to being an Empathâ˘. He also
claimed that Jason was actually rather cute if you got past him trying to murder everyone, because we all know attempting to murder children is a very minor character flaw that can be easily overlooked.
Emilyâs response? She
claimed she somehow fell asleep immediately after posting, was attacked by Jason in her dream, and screamed for Leila, who didnât show up. How convenient! The only
advice she got after
that was to talk to Abby or Jai about it, since they were the club admins.
Three, Four, Better Lock Your Door Not even a week passed before a fourth member, Jody,
posted that she'd seen Jason too. She had been trying to contact her own spirit guide, a swan named Dooslan, when Jason showed up. She asked him what his name was, he told her his name like any true gentleman would, and then started attacking her until a deer and a cardinal showed up and told him
"Swiper, no swiping" to stop. Then she woke up.
This sent the other members into
a tizzy, and Zach suggested that Jason, like any classic anime villain, was planning something. Steph claimed that her spirit animal
told her that saying Jason's name was what made him appear. Another member
claimed that she got blurry visions of Jason even though she hadnât even tried to contact her spirit animal.
Four days later, a member named Lilly posted about how sheâd been talking to her spirit animal, a wolf named Lacriasca, until the wolf suddenly vanished (adding another example to the pattern of spirit animals being useless thus far) and she woke up back in the real world. Then, while still in said real world, she saw Jason in front of her! And what was her reaction to being faced with this notorious terrorizer of teens she knew on the internet?
Hug him, of course. Naturally, this ended with her arm being
brokenâbut not by Jason, actually! She
told another member that sheâd been meditating outside, then conveniently got hit by a basketball right
before Jason showed up. And she had
somehow been able to hug this angry astral plane polar bear with an arm that got broken moments earlier by a basketball. Or the basketball breaking her arm was caused by Jasonâs arrival, Iâm not sure. Itâs not really clear. Maybe Jason was also a basketball player in addition to being a killer polar bear?
Jenny made a
thread to document the pattern of
everyone who got attacked by Jason. Jessica herself
commented and was shocked,
shocked, that Jason had obtained more victims! No one had any solutions to this problem, except for Abby and, surprisingly, resident spirit animal doubter Mike. Sort of.
Five, Six, Grab YourâŚWait, Thatâs It? Several days later, Mike posted a simple
challenge on the board for a member to explain what exactly their âspirit animalâ business was all about. Abby reacted to this
very calmly and gracefully, as you can see
here, and told everyone else in the club not to respond to him. After
some back-and-
forth between them, Abby linked to an
expert on spirit animals to show where sheâd gotten her interest in them. Personally, I have no idea who this guy is or how much of a verified expert he is on spirit guides, but the font he uses for everything on his site is Papyrus. Make of that what you will.
Although Abby wasnât a fan of Mikeâs little stunt, she did agree with one point heâd brought upânamely, that spirituality was largely based on your subconscious and what you manifested of it through dreams, meditation, or the like. She made a
thread to lay down the law about Jason: it was best to no longer give him attention because it would make the issue worse, and the only person she believed about the Jason attacks was Jessicaâeveryone else was overreacting, because she (somehow) knew for a fact that the spirit world had guards to keep beings like him out. From now on, anyone who wanted to talk about Jason could
only do it in a PM to her. No more posting about the evil polar bear.
Not a lot of people responded, but Jenny
pointed out the oddity of the fact that Jason had first been classified as a spirit animal without a human and was now considered a demon. Abbyâs
response was that the whole Jason thing was just a product of an âoveractive imaginationâ (insert obligatory snark about self-awareness here), because spirit animals couldnât actually hurt people physically at all, let alone cause a broken arm. According to her, Jason couldnât be a demon because demons work for the devil and no one on the site was a Satan worshiper (as far as we know), and somehow she knew all of this because sheâd been attacked by spirit animals before and only got hurt mentally. Unfortunately, she didnât elaborate on this claim (again).
The only member to respond to Abby after that was Jordan, who
suggested that Jason was a figment of a collective imagination and that everyone should stop obsessing over Jason and move on. Sound advice, which Abby agreed with, and that was the end of the thread. Allâs well that ends well, right? WellâŚ
Seven, Eight, Heâs a Poor Little Cinnamon Roll Now, Actually! Jordan proceeded to take a massive dump on his own logic and made a
thread later that same month, with the oh so civil title of âYou People Are Idiotsâ. He posted about how heâd been meditating in his basement until Jason showed up, touched his nose to Jordanâs chest, somehow caused Jordan to hallucinate about his loved ones, and turned into a little cub.
Then Jordan was transported to his âspirit worldâ, where he met with Nightshade, Ankh, Aurora, and his
fourth newly found spirit guide, a black panther named Masen, because he apparently was somehow
soooo special that he got not one, not two, not three, but FOUR spirit animals. The whole gang was shocked that Jason was now a cute cub, and Jordan heard a voice telling him that this would all make sense later. (Spoiler alert: it did not.)
He concluded the post by saying Jason followed him around everywhere now, and threatened to rip anyone who called Jason evil to pieces because he was
soooo totally "badass", being an alleged Empath⢠with five spirit animals now and all.
The reception to his self-aggrandizing little display was lukewarm, to say the least. Jenny expressed
skepticism that Jason was able to attach himself to Jordan, abiding by Jessica's story that Jason was another kidâs intended spirit guide who went rogue and Abby's claim that the âattacksâ on the other members were just their imagination. Abby had no response other than to wish him
luck with Jason,
stating that demons could shapeshift and deceive.
Jordanâs
reply was that it
did happen, and that heâs
totally an Empathâ˘, and Jasonâs totally a good guy now, girls, really, heâs a cute little de-aged cub now and everything! He went on to
say that his wolf, Nightshade, was wary and always beside him whenever Jason was around (considering that Jason, you know, mauled him and all), and he was ignoring Nightshade now because the wolf (very logically) thought he was going to do something stupid. Truly a guy worthy of having five spirit animals.
Abby and Jenny didnât take kindly to this and
told him to listen to his spirit animal, Jordan
conceded the point, and that was that.
Nine, Ten, We Can All Sleep Again The next month, Jordan
posted about how he thought he was being demonically possessed because he kept waking up to bleeding cuts on his arm. He claimed that this demon possessed him to go into the restroom during class and cut the name âDrewâ into his arm with a paperclip, and he
somehow knew that was the spiritâs name. Oh, and he was sure his friend was being possessed too because, uhâŚher pupils were big and âgear-shapedâ (I assume this was a typo), and she was laughing a lot and being clingy. Because those count as signs of demonic possession now.
Zach advised him to
meditate, but Jordan
whined he couldnât do that because all his spirit animals except for Jason were (understandably) ignoring him. The only one talking to him was Jason, who had no advice because he was currently infantilized. No one else had much valuable
advice, and Emily (remember her?)
told him on her other account to get holy water or an exorcism. Jordan
rejected both options because of his hatred for priests and shared that the demonâs full name was Drusilla (because I guess she took the time to introduce herself in between the self-mutilations).
Conveniently, he
refused to post any photos of his armâs cut because it was too âgrossâ (sure, Jan). When
advised to burn sage instead, he
claimed heâd already tried that and helpfully filled in that his spirit animals had previously been shunning him because of Jason, so he cut ties with the cub, and now his guides were fighting the demons for him. So much for ripping anyone who insulted Jason to pieces.
Emily
told him he had to say holy words while burning the sage to make it work, and that he shouldnât get a âLugi boardâ (I presume she meant âouija boardâ) because thatâd make it worse. Jordan
responded that the demons were now conveniently gone and heâd put âprotection charmsâ around his home and his friends (which I guess absolved his friend of her possession too), so it was all resolved now. Yay?
Jason basically faded into irrelevance after that, and only got a mention in two more threads. Carolyn posted
again, this time about how she
definitely saw a shadowy figure manifest in front of her, and when Zach
suggested that it might be Jason in search of a new home, Jordan
barged in to âcorrectâ him that Jason wasnât a demon (which had
nothing to do with what Zach had said). Jenny
chided Jordan in turn for talking about Jason and reiterated definitively that Jason had been another kidâs spirit animal who solely messed with Jessica, and all other sightings of him had been imaginative. After some
spamming from another kid, Abby resolved the matter by stating the shadow figure was not a demon, but a shadow guide (and yet again failed to explain what that was).
The other
thread was from a member named Morgan who talked about how, while daydreaming in math class, she had found her spirit animal sitting on the back of a polar bear. When Zach
suggested that it was Jason, Abby cut in to
reinforce the decree that Jason wasnât real and had been a figment of everyoneâs imagination. Zach
reminded her of what Jordan and Jessica had said about him; Jordan
screeched once again that his precious little baby Jason (whom he abandoned) wasnât a demon
and was somehow not a spirit, conceded grudgingly that some of Jasonâs attacks had been imaginary (presumably not including his own experiences), and whined that people were stupid. Oh, and Morgan
said her polar bearâs name was Cascade, but by that point nobody cared.
So, what can be learned from this episode? Not a lot, other than maybe the fact that an evil polar bear can do a lot to grip a bunch of teenagersâ imaginations. Sadly, that was the only exciting thing to ever happen in the spirit animal club, so thereâs not much else to write about after that. There are
some chat logs discussing the incident years later, though (âRoyâ is another name Jordan went by and, to my knowledge, is not his real name).
And on a final note: from what Iâve heard, Abby still believes in spirit animals to this day. Do whatever you want with that information.
