Hi, sorry in advance as this may be a long post. My sister we’ll call her Sarah (fake name) is currently pregnant with her first baby which is amazing as she has struggled with getting pregnant for the past four years. She’s also recently separated from ex-husband and is now in a happy and healthy relationship with her new bf Henry (fake name). I’ve always been supported of Sara and Henry’s relationship from the beginning because he makes her happy. I had the opportunity to fly out to see her a few weeks ago. It isn’t always the easiest to go see her since she lives out of state and in the past two years that she’s lived out of state I’ve seen her twice. Last year was the first time after she separated from her ex that I got to see her. I told our mother that I was planning a trip to see her and she expressed that she wanted to go. I was hesitant on giving her the green light to go as she and my sister did not have the greatest relationship. I said that if she wants you there then you can go, but after talking with my sister first, she expressed only wanting to see me, but if mom wanted to come then she was okay with it. I booked my ticket and then sent over the flight information for mom so she could book it, but I guess she couldn’t get on the same flight and asked if I would change the days so she could come. I told her no. Then she also told me she expected me to buy her ticket, but that she would reimburse me. I apologized, but told her I didn’t have money in my account for both her and my plane ticket. She was upset, and told her maybe next time I fly out, I’ll book her ticket too. Fast forward to a few weeks ago, I told my mother that I was going to fly out and see her and meet Henry for the first time. My mother asked if she could come along and I said that I was only planning on flying myself out. That I wanted to meet Henry and also go over plans for baby shower and to help with anything else they needed. She told me that she also wanted to meet Henry and help with the baby shower, but I told her that I wanted to handle the details since I know what my sister and Henry like and are expecting. She was obviously a little hurt, but I didn’t feel bad. Fast forward to the day before I leave and I had texted my mother telling her the days that I would be flying back out here and to try and get a game plan going. I also needed to ask her about where she plans on staying as my sister has only one extra bedroom and my bf and I had dibs since I would be setting up and decorating for the baby shower. My mother’s responded saying that she had already booked her plane tickets but wasn’t sure if my stepdad was coming but that she had a “backup plus 1”. I was confused as she had wanted to fly with me so that she could get some alone time with Sarah. And then she said that “I didn’t realize you wanted to fly together….thought I was on my own to figure it out”. I replied that I never told her I didn’t want to fly with her. I have told her that if something were to happen to Sarah and she’s in the middle of an emergency, to find a way to get out there as I would not wait for her. My mother lives four hours away from me. She then responded with “Hmm partly true…I wanted to come back with you on your first trip, but you said you wanted time with your sister alone that I could come next trip…next trip came along and you still didn’t want me to come with you so I just assumed that you just do not want to travel with me”. I replied that both these trips were for different reasons. The first trip was to be there to comfort Sarah in this difficult time. She cried almost everyday I was there, we both cried. This time, it was a much happier trip, but an important one as this would be the first time meeting Henry. Her last reply was “got it..”. I have not replied to her since her last message and Sarah is worried that mom won’t come to the baby shower. So AITA? I feel as though I should add a little background info: 1. My mother says she has a fear of flying, but her reasons for why she’s afraid of flying have evolved over my lifetime. First was due to 9/11. Second is that she’s afraid of the plane going down. Now the third reason is she doesn’t want to die alone if the plane goes down and wants me or someone with her. 2. My mother and Sarah haven’t really spoken since she married her ex husband and that was due to our mother not showing up to the wedding. They got married during Covid but had taken every precaution to ensure no one got sick. And no one got sick at the wedding or from the wedding. 3. Mother hasn’t worked since 2019 due to a few reasons, but has yet to hop on a plane and fly out to see Sarah. Sarah has expressed hurt because out of everyone in this family, she’s the only one that isn’t working and is healthy enough to fly, but chooses not to due to her “fear”.

This is a collection of old concept art images which I turned into 'generic' loading screens, replacing the existing ones. (*Generic loading screens are those you see when you first log in a character or when you do a Session Play, like the "Get Crafty!" and "Join the LOTRO Community!" loading screens.)
I edited some of the images which were too small or too big using GIMP to fit better as loading screens. However, because of the game's loading screen banners, some of the top and bottom parts of the concept art images will still not be visible.

To install:

1. Extract the 'LOTRO - Official Concept Art as Loading Screens' ZIP file.
2. Open the folder of the extracted files and cut/copy the contents. (You should see images with the name prefix 'lotro_generic_teleport_screen_' plus the number, starting from '01'.) *You will see more than 10 images in this folder, but only the first 10 ('01' to '10') will ever get used and appear in-game. Feel free to switch around the names if you want to use the other images in the compilation. This is also how you can use almost any image as a custom loading screen.
3. Go to your generic loading screens folder in the drive where you installed the game (e.g. OS (C:) > Program Files (x86) > StandingStoneGames > The Lord of the Rings Online > raw > en > logo / C:\Program Files (x86)\StandingStoneGames\The Lord of the Rings Online\raw\en\logo).
4. Paste the contents and replace the existing images in this folder.
5. Testing: Opening the game launcher should not replace the new images. You can test this by leaving the loading screens folder open as you run the game launcher. You do not have to log in or launch the game as the launcher is the one that handles the download of the loading screens. If you see that the launcher replaced your new loading screens with the old images, proceed to [6].
6. Go back one level from the 'logo' generic loading screens folder. Right-click the 'logo' folder and go to Properties, then uncheck and re-check Read-only to apply the Read-only attribute to all files in the folder. Press OK or Apply. You may need to uncheck the Read-only attribute first and apply then re-check it and apply again. The game launcher should no longer replace the images now.
7. Launch the game and enjoy the new loading screens. :)

[Quick disclaimer for people who's already seen this and mods reading this before approving: I deleted the post from last time after I accidentally deleted like half the words in the post somehow while I was trying to edit out a few grammar issues so I ended up redoing everything. Thank you for understanding.]
TL;DR: Flawed time travel fic with an 18 year-old-Sunny transported to the past, specifically one month after the recital. Very unique for what it does and has some serious potential.
but in the end, it will be this way is a time travel fic (Pairings: Aubrey/Sunny, Hero/Mari) that currently has 80807 words in the span of 16 chapters. It is set one month after the recital with Sunny as the time travelling protagonist after 2.5 years has passed since he confessed the truth to his friends and exists as a separate entity apart form his younger self. He takes the identity of a mysterious elder brother named 'Kaito' and tasks himself with the goal of bringing his friends back together as well as confessing the truth faster than four years.
Below will now include spoilers of the fic as to further explain my likes for this fic, use caution as you will with any others spoilers unless you can't control your clicking.
(Sunny/Kaito's Rash Personality)Sunny/Kaito's personality in this fic is a lot different than how most fic would depict his character (quiet, calm, etc.). Kaito is a lot more rash, commanding, and very talkative, similar to real world Aubrey. But he isn't a total copy either as his age brings him maturity as well, he has a short temper but he's able to control it to a degree and doesn't let it blind him to an extent. Mind that I said 'extent', since he does lose control a few times throughout the chapters we have so far.
(Sunny/Kaito's Rash Personality Continued)This personality seems to indicate he must've had some sort of traumatic past during his time in the city as well, as if the author thought killing his sister just wasn't enough for him. Writers are fickle creatures... that aside, it's very heavy implied that he's racked up some new trauma in his time in the city from the flashbacks we've seen so far. One notable one is how his mother seemed to have broken a promise that she made at the hospital back then that she wouldn't leave Sunny/Kaito again, which seems to allude to Sunny/Kaito having trust issues and further contribution to his growing anger.
There isn't very much to say about the now younger characters of the main cast as the author does an already serviceable job for their writing, though there is some criticism to be found which I will mention at the end of this post.
(Sunny/Kaito's Actions) Now, this is where things begin to get a lot more interesting. Combined with his new motivations and personality, he handles things somewhat recklessly but makes for a unique product because of it. He charges into a door to break into his own house to bring his younger self out of his hikikomori state without much care that a younger Kel is watching, threatens Hero to snap out of his blind anger in an argument, and breaks into Aubrey's house to confront her mother as Kaito lets Aubrey stay with him and Sunny at their house.
(Main Plots) Obviously, the main plot in this story is the time travel. We want to see how the story will end when the protagonist affects the story with their insight and knowledge of the future, but here's the thing. Even though the story is mainly centered around time travel, it is also heavily focused on whatever trauma Kaito must've went through. Throughout the story he goes through hallucinations, long thoughts about the past, denies helps from his friends, denies even his mind (or, Omori, if you will) telling him to get help, etc. It really makes you wonder just what exactly the boy went through to have such issues with getting help which we've yet to see. In a way, this feels reminiscent of the main game itself.
(Side Characters) Even when the story focuses on time travel and Sunny/Kaito's trauma, it still makes space for the side characters to have their moment to shine. Sunny's Mother (Amelia), Sunny's Father (Kuniharu), and Aubrey's Mother (name not settled on from the author) are their own fleshed out characters just like the main cast in this fic. Amelia seems to be the stem of Kaito's trust issue due to breaking a promise that her older self made in his timeline, Kuniharu is implied to have been the one to force his perfectionist mindset onto Sunny/Kaito & Mari, and Aubrey's Mother is much more mellow compared to how she is usually depicted in most fics.
(Aubrey's Mother) Aubrey's Mother, like I mentioned before, is a lot more laid back in this fic compared to how most stories depict her. I've always seen her being depicted as some sort of maniac who physically abuses Aubrey constantly like a psychopath, which is a possibility, but is something I've been fairly getting tired of. She still has her glaring issues as a person, but the way she's characterized here is incredibly refreshing.
(Aubrey's Mother Continued) Aubrey's Mother seemed to have had quite the fallout with her husband and her thoughts flat out state that Aubrey was actually the result of not using a condom, has a much more mellow attitude but does have a short temper when provoked, and has her own fair share of being suicidal. She easily gives Aubrey to Kaito after their argument, she tries to kill herself using a revolver hidden in the house before Kaito takes it away from her, etc. She also seems to serve as some sort of parallel to Sunny/Kaito during his hikikomori phase because of her alcohol addiction and watching blank static on TV screens on the couch all day.
Now, as much as I've gushed about the story so far, it does have its fair share of issues that I can't help but be bothered by often. They don't necessarily ruin the entire experience, but they're things that definitely could be improved on if the author intends to rework the entire story. (Which I've noticed during one of my rereads as the first few chapters seems heavily improved compared to their original counterpart...)

• With the exception of Kaito, the younger characters aren't as fleshed out and lack some depth. What they do so far is serviceable and I still like what they have to offer, but there's just something I feel is 'missing' from those characters that the author could do better on. To add on to this, sometimes the younger characters do tend to act a bit odd and beyond their respective age.
• The prose (basically the structure of how a narrative is written) is quite odd at times as it tends to sound formal at one point before sounding more rough to fit the character, there isn't really a balance between the two. Plus it is a bit repetitive and sort of rough around the corners.
• The story suddenly seems to use 3 separate character perspectives later on which is a bit odd since it mainly stuck to 1-2 before. It kind of screws up the pacing.
• The way Sunny/Kaito and his trauma are written are a bit exaggerated and could definitely use a slower pacing as it seems a bit too quick.

And I think that sums about everything I've got to say about this fic, in all honesty, this really hits the spot for me whenever I hunt for time travels fics in any fandom. I love when time travels fics take the advantage of the situation and use it to expand upon characters that originally didn't have such depth in the source material while also really focusing on the time travel plot.
Admittedly, I was never much fond of the time travel fics (aside from a few exceptions) for this fandom as they never seemed to quite scratch my itch for time travel. There was nothing wrong with them of course, but they tend to stray away from the time travel aspect at times in order to focus on the main cast. This fic, however, has a strong emphasis on time travel while also focusing on expanding on side characters without straying from the main characters.
It hits that juicy sweet spot and I loved every single bit of the story even with some of its admittedly glaring issues it had. It has been a few months since the fic has updated since its last chapter, but seeing the recent stealth (they didn't seem to be mentioned anywhere) reworks on the first few chapters, I still have hope for any new chapters that may come out in the future.

[I'm adding this after I've finished writing everything below. It turned out to be a lot, basically a vent about my past. I apologize if it's hard to follow. I'm not looking for advice, I just want to get it out. Thank you if you choose to read.]
I have been dealing with a lot of physical and mental health issues over the years, I'm pretty certain I'm on the spectrum but high functioning enough and was masking/overcompensating enough when I was younger for nobody to ever come to that conclusion, just was branded "weird", "introverted", "imaginative", etc.
I was also diagnosed with JDM when I was 6. Dermatomyositis sucks. I was in the hospital a lot, for a few years I'd go nearly every day.
The muscle weakness and inability to be in the sun too much (sun exposure triggers symptoms and a bad rash) made playing outside with friends hard, and it was hard to be active at all. Not to mention I was on a lot of trial meds, constantly taking new assortments of pills, etc. (Some of which came with immediate side effects like severe bloating, and long term like infertility) until they found what worked best for me to manage my symptoms.
I have a lot of emotional trauma from when I was younger as well, multiple instances of SA and one of my parents was really abusive when the other was absent (had a job where they traveled away for work).
They stopped the abuse as I got older and I started just avoiding confrontation at all costs, but our relationship is still rocky.
I won't go into detail because some of my close friends and partner know about specifics, and I'd be embarrassed if they read this, but some instances include:

• Being locked in a closet when I was super young because I wouldnt stop crying and was terrified of the "monster" I was certain was in there. They were upset because I always had a very overactive imagination as a kid and would have sensory hallucinations and would get hysterical with fear about the things I'd think were there.
  
• Having my face stuffed into a pillow because I wouldn't stop crying. They dragged me down a hall and 2 flights of stairs by the hair. My friend had been over, I dont remember much other than my friend being screamed at to leave and my sister (3 years younger) crying and begging the parent not to kill me. I think it started because I made a dumb joke and stuck my tongue out or something.
  
  • That parent covering for their nephews SA of me and convincing me not to tell anyone about it evemaking me feel like I did something wrong and gaslighting me years later and lying about it when I brought it up as an adult.

I'm not sure if these things have contributed directly to the mental state I'm in now, but they CERTAINLY haven't helped.
At the time of writing, I've left the house about 6 times in the past 2 years.
I'm terribly agoraphobic, I'm overweight, I have trouble doing basic functions like feeding myself or showering. I avoid even my family in my own home and I've had an ear infection for 2 months and a back injury for longer and I'm too afraid to go out and see a doctor.
I still have the dermatomyositis, that'll never go away, but I havn't been to the specialist or a serious doctor in general in many years (parents let me stop going, I was anxious and just didnt wanna go anymore after years of it, and I think they were tired of the endless expenses and I was healthy enough without meds at that point)
I have a partner. I've been with him for a year. I love him so much, and hes super anxious as well and we basically live together online. He understands me not leaving the house, and hasn't pressured me at all to meet (we've video chatted though, my camera on but not his, so he knows I'm not a catfish at least. I've seen enough pics of him and been on voice calls to believe that hes who I think he is, but honestly even if he looked vastly different I wouldnt care so no worries there.)
I want to get better. I want to lose weight and be healthy enough to walk around or at least stand a while without it being difficult or hurting. Even aside from my weight, the dermatomyositis affects muscles and it be excruciating to start being active, especially after nearly 3 years of being bedridden with depression/anxiety/agoraphobia.
I'm not even emotionally well enough to want to get out, I just want to start working towards being well enough and confident enough to meet my partner in person.
I just want to be happy. I've been thinking about applying for disability, because I have been living off the kindness of others for a while and my parents letting me live here and I feel like a leech. My physical health issues + mental health issues, it makes it hard for me to even make a call though, let alone follow-ups and appointments and God forbid leaving the house.
Even being in pain and needing medical attention hasn't motivated me, although, I guess that's the type of thing disability was made for isnt it? People like me that can't care for themselves anymore.
Theres also that guilt, like, am I even sick enough for this? I was raised with the adults in my life saying people living off the government were boms. I know that absolutely isnt the case, but at the same time, theres this sense of shame and "what if I'm just a lazy piece of shit?" That I can't shake off.
My anxiety tells me whoever I talk to will think I'm lying or something.
I have 0 medical records for YEARS, physical and mental health, so I dont know how to "prove" anything so to speak.
I dont have the money for therapy right now but I'm trying to get some together and trying to get my parents to maybe help but it's a long shot. Gosh I really am rambling.
I'll end it here but will update soon. I'm getting overwhelmed/frustrated just typing all of this out and I'm getting emotional.

Hi all, first post here.
TLDR is at the bottom. This is gonna be a long one, folks
I'm currently a college student whose around a year and a half away from getting my bachelor's. I've been working part-time at a hospitality place in a nearby town. I live in a very rural area, so it's a half hour drive there and back. With gas prices here being high, the pay there only being a few dollars above minimum wage, and that I need clerical/office experience for my future career, I decided to apply for a different job.
Lucky for me, I ended up getting it. There are a few drawbacks compared to my current, but the benefits outweigh it. I can work remotely, so I don't need to travel, the pay is double that of minimum wage here, and I get paid time off after a certain amount of time there. I let my boss know, so he can change my schedule, who then lets my manager know. The next week, I also let him know the schedule I have, what times I can work, and what times I'd want to work.
Of course, come to find out the times I gave him were not the ones I actually ended up with. I updated him as soon as I found out, and apologized profusely for what had happened.
My manager is... well, not unhappy, but not exactly happy. When I told him about it, he seemed disappointed. Said he wanted to work with me. That was pleasant enough, but since, it seems like he, and another coworker who works there full-time, have become a bit more passive-aggressive. Not outright rude or hostile, mind you, but... different.
I ended up attending my training for my new job in the morning, and working at my old one at night for my usual shifts the first week I had it. The second week, I asked to be off during the week- for context, I only work one weekday, with the majority of my shifts being doubles on the weekend. Lucky me, a flu starts going through my house around the same time as I start my first shift, so I decide to call out of my shift that Friday. I know I'm contagious, and figured I could use an extra day to recover before my shift that Saturday.
Skip forward to Saturday night, and I'm still feeling pretty miserable, but not sneezing or coughing, so I feel okay to work. I head in, and my manager and coworker, who are the only other two there, and keeping their distance. I'm not a talkative person, or particularly sociable when I don't need to be, so it was okay for me.
Five hours later, and it's the end of the shift. My manager has finished balancing the books, and we're basically ready to leave. My coworker and I are together. We go over what we had left to close, and when we see everything is done, my manager starts talking to me about why I took that new job.
I plainly reply, "I needed it for my resume."
"Yeah, but why did you take that job when you had a commitment here?"
Me, feeling like I was running a fever and with my head pounding, didn't respond. He just stared at me for a few moments, before adding a "just wondering."
His tone was pretty passive-aggressive, in the sense that I could tell he was annoyed with me, when he tried not to show it. I didn't know how to explain to him at the time that I thought my hours would be different- again, still sick.
Keep in mind, all this is happening with my coworker right beside us. My manager mentions something about how messed up the schedule got because of what happened with me, and my coworker adds "Yeah, we always get fucked over."
Now, I don't know if he meant it like that, but I took it as him implying I was fucking them over. I didn't want to escalate it any further, so I decided to step back and drop the conversation. After that, we said our goodbyes and left for the night.
So, I ask, am I in the wrong in this situation? Is there even a wrong party here? I understand where they're coming from- I can understand the stress our job puts on them, even when we have a reliable schedule. But, at the same time, it feels out of line to say that I'm fucking them over by trying to better myself. What do you think? I'm open to any opinion on my situation. If I'm in the wrong, I want to know how to correct my ways. If I'm in the right, I'd want to know how to proceed. If there's no party in the wrong, what should the next course of action be? Thanks.
TLDR: Got a new job for my resume, was given an incorrect schedule which I thought would allow me to work at my old one like normal. My corrected schedule conflicted with my old job, manager and coworker were not happy. Am I in the wrong?

So for each of those fifteen minutes that Ove stood waiting at the station he was slightly irritated. And then the irritation turned into a certain anxiety, and after that he decided that Sonja had only been ribbing him when she'd suggested they should meet. He had never felt so silly in his entire life. Of course she didn't want to go out with him, how could he have got that into his head? His humiliation, when the insight dawned on him, welled up like a stream of lava, and he was tempted to toss the flowers in the nearest trash can and march off without turning around.
Looking back, he couldn't quite explain why he stayed. Maybe because he felt, in spite of it all, that an agreement to meet was an agreement. And maybe there was some other reason. Something a little harder to put his finger on. He didn't know it at that moment, of course, but he was destined to spend so many quarter hours of his life waiting for her that his old father would have gone cross-eyed if he'd found out. And when she did finally turn up, in a long floral-print skirt and a cardigan so red that it made Ove shift his weight from his right foot to his left, he decided that maybe her inability to be on time was not the most important thing.

Ove had never been asked how he lived before he met her. But if anyone had asked him, he would have answered that he didn't.
...
One day she was lying there in a hospital and holding his hand and telling him not to worry. Everything was going to be alright. Easy for her to say, thought Ove, his breast pulsating with anger and sorrow. But she just whispered, "Everything will be fine, darling Ove," and leaned her arm against his arm. And then gently pushed her index finger into the palm of his hand. And then closed her eyes and died.
Ove stayed there with her hand in his for several hours. Until the hospital staff entered the room with warm voices and careful movements, explaining that they had to take her body away. Ove rose from his chair, nodded, and went to the undertakers to take care of the paperwork. On Sunday she was buried. On Monday he went to work.
But if anyone had asked, he would have told them that he never lived before he met her.
And not after either.

Yeah, yeah, I know, your immediate response is gonna be "mental illness NEVER makes someone act cruelly! You're just making excuses!" and yeah. I probably deserve it. All the other people I know who are mentally ill (which is many, I've spent years in and out of hospitals and treatment programs and "support" groups) are more than just good people, they're like....unnaturally perfect, never say an unkind word to anyone, always help out, never are lazy or make excuses, their pain ONLY gets turned inwards. So yeah, I'm a shitty person making shitty excuses. And reddit is a shitty place to look for....any sort of emotional advice. I just really, really want to get this off my chest. Maybe I'm just looking for pity, idk. Y'all can roast me to hell if you want. I don't really trust people unless they're willing to criticize me, tbh.
Anyways, today I tried to run myself into traffic. If I sound weirdly casual about it, it's because this has happened before. The fun combo of "I'm so upset I need to do something Right Now" and "well look, I'm surrounded by roads". Anyways, I tried to run myself into traffic, got yelled at, and cussed someone out for it. Said some pretty awful things. And now I feel shitty. This isn't a new problem. I pull this crap all the time. For some reason, my #1 response to emotional pain is to yell and insult someone. Or throw something. I know why I do this, I've been in therapy since I was 8, I can psychoanalyze myself all to heck. It's the only way I feel "heard", it's a cry for help without having to admit emotional vulnerability, it's poor impulse control, whatever. I can make excuses for it all the livelong day, but it doesn't change the fact that I don't know a single other person who reacts to mental illness this way.
Except, like....abusers. Yeah......
I hate that I'm like this. The whole time, I felt like I was watching myself, in my mind going what the fuck is wrong with you? You're probably scaring the crap out of all these people, scarring them emotionally, etc etc etc. You're a horrible person.
But I keep doing it. I keep doing shit like this. All the deep breathing and grounding exercises and whatever else don't help because, in the moment? I try to push it down, I try to be good, but in the moment I snap because I don't want to quiet my feelings down. I want someone to notice. Ironically, the feelings I'm usually overwhelmed by when this sort of shit happens are guilt and self-loathing, which, uh...yeah, way to piss in your own cornflakes, Me. I hate myself for being a shitty person, so as a result I...act like a shitty person. Can't even have the decency to not be a fucking hypocrite about it, I guess. All the other people I know who hate themselves, they take it out on...themselves! I'm just some kinda freak, I guess.
I don't know. I just feel so alone. No one I know acts like this. They'd probably kill themselves from guilt if they even thought about acting like this. I feel like a freak. Therapists, they don't help, cause they don't get it. They just tell me "well that's wrong, stop doing it" as if I don't know that already. As if I haven't tried.

Dumbest take you’ve read all day? Maybe. This is a very long analysis so feel free to nope out now if that isn’t your thing.
Huge spoilers for all of Ted Lasso and all of Barry ahead. If you haven’t seen up to the finale of Barry and you think you might want to, please don’t read on.
At first glance, perhaps it seems there are not a lot of parallels between the two shows. Superficially, there are a few. Both are award-winning comedy series’ that explore masculinity and feature eponymous cis, white, male, Gen X protagonists. They happened to run at the same time, and have their series finale in the same week. Both are created, produced, written by, and star two former SNL castmates.*
So maybe a little comparison is worthwhile? The more I looked at these two shows side-by-side, the more parallels I could see.
Tonally they are at different ends of the comedy spectrum, probably reflecting their makers’ personal comedic tastes.
Barry is dark from the start and ends somewhere south of Vantablack. It is a cautionary tale. The comedy often comes from juxtapositions of banality and horror.
Ted Lasso has a much lighter and brighter comedic touch, at turns goofy or silly, witty and smart. It provides more guidance than caution.
But there are more subject and thematic similarities than might first be apparent. Both examine modern masculinity, and they share a vision of the masculine ideal to strive for. Both play with and subvert audience expectations. One possible (reductive) summary for both might be: “man struggles with poor mental health”. These are the areas where I think Ted Lasso and Barry share some common ground.
Trauma and repression Both Barry and Ted are traumatised. Barry by his military service and, it’s implied, his upbringing. Ted by his father’s suicide. Traditional masculinity dictates that men do not express their emotions or process trauma in healthy ways. Barry and Ted both initially adhere to this tradition.
Ted represses his negative emotions. He masks anger and grief behind unrelenting positivity and joviality, until they eventually bubble up through panic attacks. He neglects his own needs through his obsession with helping others. He begins to process his trauma through therapy.
Barry represses his emotions while killing, or moulds them into anger and channels that through violence. His acting classes provide the first opportunity he has had to process his trauma.
Fathers Ted’s dad left him. Barry’s surrogate dad, Fuches, abused and exploited him.
Both protagonists have one son, aged around 8. For each, their son is the centre of their world, central to their sense of identity and purpose. They both project their childhood selves onto their son. Their sons are a representation of their boyhood selves, and they want to protect them in a way they themselves were not.
Barry fails to care for his son in the most fundamental ways - because he doesn’t know how and because he is a narcissist - despite seeing himself as a “good dad”.
Ted loves his son but runs away from him, he fails to give Henry what he most needs; his presence. Ted eventually realises that he needs to confront his fear of abandonment to stop himself abandoning his son.
Masculinity Both shows hold “ethical manhood”** as the ideal version of masculinity. It encompasses reduced conflict, enhanced community, a kinder, gentler version of masculinity. Barry doesn’t offer any examples of course, only cautions against the reverse. Ted Lasso offers Ted and other men as role-models, and maybe goes a step further, hinting at the possibility of “inclusive masculinity”***: a community-based, multi-racial masculinity that is expressive, communal, and supportive. He’s not there yet, but I would argue Ted’s “it’s not about me, it never was” points in that direction.
Subversion of expectations Viewers in season 1 expect redemption for likeable hitman Barry. Redemption is only possible by facing what you’ve done and accepting the consequences of your actions. Barry is incapable of this.
Barry plays to a lot of viewers’ expectations of a macho action man. Barry is kind of a “bad ass”, an emotionless killing-machine. Some viewers were surprised and disappointed when Barry started to crack: emotional breakdowns, increasingly poor mental health, pining for love and connection. Some disliked the bold time jump, in which the show asked: what would happen if Barry got what he wanted? Something nobody expected.
Many viewers expected rom com tropes from Ted Lasso, such as a romantic relationship between the male and female leads. The show rejected this expectation in favour of a platonic male/female relationship. The love triangle was resolved with everyone ending up single.
Both shows made significant structural and tonal changes a couple of seasons in. We are not used to big swings partway through a series. Traditionally, showrunners have striven to maintain a consistent structure and tone, or implemented changes incrementally. Maybe bold shifts will be a new trend and audiences will adjust more quickly.
No happy endings Needs vs wants: In the final season, Barry gets what he wants, but not what he needs. He gets the family and the “normal” life he longed for. But because he’s an irredeemable murderer, it’s horrifying: a dark, twisted, funhouse mirror version of a happy TV family.
Ted gets what he needs, but not necessarily everything he wants (like the Rolling Stones song that plays over the season 3 trailer). He gets to be with his son, and gets help for his mental health. He doesn’t get the girl (Michelle), at least not that we know of. He has a long road ahead of him, rebuilding his life in Kansas and working on his issues.
Both shows feature a somewhat ambiguous look direct to camera as their final shot. Ted’s smile threw some viewers. It’s not the unambiguously happy smile of the hero at the end of a rom com. Sudeikis conveys a lot of conflicting emotion through his eyes in that moment. Uncertainty maybe; resignation that he still has so far to go. A little sadness. Contentment. Bravery is my main takeaway. Ted is willing to do the hard work.
The choice of Fight Test by the Flaming Lips over the finale end credits of Ted Lasso was an interesting choice. It again subverted the idea of a “happy ending”.
Barry’s son John looks to camera immediately after watching the hilariously terrible biopic of his father’s life in which Barry is depicted as a John Wick-style hero protecting his family. He smiles tearfully. What does that smile mean? It seems that John buys in to the Hollywood lie of his dad’s traditionally masculine heroism.
If you made it this far: thanks. Once I started on this, I got tangled up in it all day. And this is a very narrow analysis of just the Ted and Barry characters. There’s a lot more there, but I don’t have the time, and I’m sure you don’t have the patience.

Hi, I just built my PC and for now all is running quite well, the only thing left to do is to do memory test (GPU amd CPU got pretty high scores in their respective tests).
I'd say that my PC is quite high-end, but to me it seems weird that the boot time is much slower than on my 5+ year old PC. The boot time on the old one is like 10+ seconds (or maybe even lower), while on the new one it could be 30-60 seconds. The motherboard lights up informing me about the missing CPU, then this light disappears, all is good and when the graphics card lights up, then the boot is quite fast.
My question is: how do I decrease the boot time?
