2023.06.01 13:15 AutoModerator June Hardware Thread.

Here is a monthly thread about hardware.

You came here or were sent here because you're wondering/intending to buy some new hardware.
If you're comfortable picking motherboards and power supplies? You want buildapcvideoediting
A sub $1k or $600 laptop? We probably can't help. Prices change frequently. Looking to get it under $1k? Used from 1 or 2 years ago is a better idea.

General hardware recommendations

Desktops over laptops.
  1. i7 chip is where our suggestions start.. Know the generation of the chip. 12xxx is this year's chipset - and a good place to start. More or less, each lower first number means older chips. How to decode chip info.
  2. A video card with 2+GB of VRam. 4 is even better.
  3. An SSD is suggested - and will likely be needed for caching.
  4. Stay away from ultralights/tablets.
No, we're not debating intel vs. AMD, etc. This thread is for helping people - not the debate about this month's hot CPU. The top-of-the-line AMDs are better than Intel, certainly for the $$$. Midline AMD processors struggle with h264.
A "great laptop" for "basic only" use doesn't really exist; you'll need to transcode the footage (making a much larger copy) if you want to work on oldeunderpowered hardware.
----------------------
We think the nVidia Studio System chooser is a quick way to get into the ballpark.
---------------

If you're here because your system isn't responding well/stuttering?

Action cam, Mobile phone, and screen recordings can be difficult to edit, due to h264/5 material (especially 1080p60 or 4k) and Variable Frame rate. Footage types like 1080p60, 4k (any frame rate) are going to stress your system. When your system struggles, the way that the professional industry has handled this for decades is to use Proxies. Wiki on Why h264/5 is hard to edit.
How to make your older hardware work? Use proxies Proxies are a copy of your media in a lower resolution and possibly a "friendlier" codec. It is important to know if your software has this capability. A proxy workflow more than any other feature, is what makes editing high frame rate, 4k oand h264/5 footage possible. Wiki on Proxy editing.
If your source was a screen recording or mobile phone, it's likely that it has a variable frame rate. In other words, it changes the amount of frames per second, frequently, which editorial system don't like. Wiki on Variable Frame Rate
-----------

Is this particular laptop/hardware for me?

If you ask about specific hardware, don't just link to it.
Tell us the following key pieces:

Some key elements

  1. GPUS generally don't help codec decode/encode.
  2. Variable frame rate material (screen recordings/mobile phone video) will usually need to be conformed (recompressed) to a constant frame rate. Variable Frame Rate.
  3. 1080p60 or 4k h264/HEVC? Proxy workflows are likely your savior. Why h264/5 is hard to play.
  4. Look at how old your CPU is. This is critical. Intel Quicksync is how you'll play h264/5.
See our wiki with other common answers.

Are you ready to buy? Here are the key specs to know:

Codec/compressoin of your footage? Don't know? Media info is the way to go, but if you don't know the codec, it's likely H264 or HEVC (h265).
Know the Software you're going to use
Compare your hardware to the system specs below. CPU, GPU, RAM.
-----
Again, if you're coming into this thread exists to help people get working systems, not champion intel, AMD or other brands.

Apple Specific

If you're thinking Apple -

This the key article you want
The TL;DR? Here's the key info for people who are thinking of themselves as media professionals:
Pick Mobile or Desktop. Then it's about what meets your budget. Prices are indicated based on Apple's site in the US as of Feb 6, 2023. The details (such as cores or RAM) is so you can match the pricing.

Monitors

What's most important is % of sRGB (rec 709) coverage. LED < IPS < OLEDs. Sync means less than size/resolution. Generally 32" @ UHD is about arm's length away.
And the color coverage has more to do with Can I see all the colors, not Is it color accurate. Accurate requires a probe (for video) alongside a way to load that into the monitor (not the OS.)
----

If you've read all of that, start your post/reply: "I read the above and have a more nuanced question:

And copy (fill out) the following information as needed:

2023.05.31 19:55 Future_Ad7384 Home Cam Recs?

We’re hiring a babysitter who’s not someone we already knew or family for the first time and needless to say, my husband and I are pretty nervous trusting someone new with our kids. Anyone have recommendations on cameras we could use inside the house to keep an eye on things just in case? Preferably one that connects to Apple Home but not totally necessary if it’s really awesome.

2023.05.26 23:55 Jellychews Dash cam didnt record car accident..

Hey all. Looking to get a new dash cam. Some dude cut me off on a small road when we were going about 30 and break checked me. I bumped him (the scratches on my car rubbed off lol) but alas since i have no evidence, itll be my fault.
Looking for dash cam to make sure it never happens like this again. Don't care about price but would prefer under 500. Would like the rear recorded as well but not a big deal. Not sure which of the recommendations on the list to pick..
I currently have the viofo 119 v3. I have 2 issues with it.
  1. right after i turn the car off, if i take the sd card out, it doesn't show recordings of my drive just now. it only shows like the day before.
  2. it often says that it is not recording and will blink the rec button.
I'm thinking i mustve gotten a faulty unit or its an issue with the sd card I'm using (which I plan to replace) I plan to run both the viofo with a new sd card and a dash came one of you recommend so at least one will record it..
Thank you for your help.
p.s. open to micro sd card recs as well. I plan on getting the one from the community guidelines (samsung) but if there is a better option I'm open.
edit: wanted to add that if something like the tesla sentry mode is available I'd definitely want that.

2023.05.26 02:53 jsnyd21 Replay Buffer Crashing OBS (Virtual Camera Issue?)

Hi,
I've been running into some issues with my OBS & camera freezing when my replay buffer is on.
It's not consistent, sometimes it takes 3 minutes for it to crash, other times it will work for hours at a time.
I'm using my OBS virtual camera in Discord, which is how I know OBS froze, since my camera in Discord will also freeze.
I attached a log file (I hope it's the correct one) and I can also share my settings if anybody would like to see them.
I would appreciate any advice as my main goal is to simply clip my games.
Thanks so much.
I wasn't able to post the .txt file so I copied and pasted the text in the log. (Sorry)

2023.05.25 06:06 NoGuarantee6075 [Help] 70Mai Omni 360 DashCam rear camera?

So I just bought the 70mai omni 360 dash cam with a hardwire kit.
Do I have to buy a rear camera separately? Or is the 360 meant to cover the back by turning around? I.e. driver facing view?
I'm a bit confused with this thanks. If I have to buy a separate back camera what do you rec and does the type c hardwire kit cover it connection wise?

2023.05.25 04:27 keanuwheeze Uptick in careless drivers

In need of a space to vent
I always thought our drivers were bad enough but has anyone noticed an increase in careless drivers at least on Oahu? Within the past month or so, there have been many times where I’ve seen people blatantly blow through stop signs and red lights, people speeding through parking lots, people swerving in and out of lanes, people signaling one direction but turning the other, people getting greedy and blocking intersections, etc. When I honk at these people, they mostly look at me as if I’m in the wrong. It’s especially ironic when their car has stickers about being kind or even “baby onboard.”
I thought I was already a defensive driver but it doesn’t seem like enough since drivers have been astonishingly unpredictable. Driving has become such a test of patience
I need to get a dash cam asap (if anyone has a good rec, please comment below)

2023.05.24 14:39 Huge_Dragonfruit_733 Iso cam recs

Since nanny cams seems to be a frequently discussed topic does anyone have recs for in home cameras?? I have anxiety so I do get anxious about someone hacking into my cameras so I figured this would be the safest place to get suggestions. What are your favorite cams that can be viewed from your phone? not a MB just a nanny doing research

2023.05.22 20:45 Longjumping_Show1139 Flashing nvidia-smi command window

Good afternoon everyone.
For a week now I have been experiencing a strange problem, where a C:\windows\system32\nividia-smi.exe command window opens every 2 minutes and after blinking for a couple of seconds it disappears, only to repeat the process again . I've tried closing the window in that time frame but it doesn't help, it inevitably flashes again after two minutes. It's been like this for almost a week and although it hasn't caused any performance problems, it's a very annoying situation (right now that I write this, it's happening). My PC is an intel core i5-10300H with 16gb of RAM and a 4gb GeForce GTX 1650.
Any idea or solution that can help me?
I thank you in advance for your time.
