Hey all. First off. Wonderful that this community exists, I cannot wait to begin a fulfilling journey of healing. I'm a 27 year old male unvaccinated.
Some background - I've had COVID 6 times throughout the pandemic, after each infection my mental health worsened and worsened. My theory is that, due to living in an old moldy home - my immune system couldn't combat the mold and the mold exacerbated my mental health issues. It was manageable, until it wasn't between the 5th and 6th infection, things popped off. I'm a part of the Long Covid community, however, I've recently been thinking. This may not be "Long Covid - Long Covid" this may be mold exposure toxicity.
Sure enough I ran some at home mold tests. Ends up the bedroom I was suffering through the worst of my symptoms was between two moldy water damaged attics, with the attic doors having unsealed direct airflow into the bedroom between them. I was basically in a microwave of toxicity. The exposure tests themselves are gnarly. I've sent them in, pending species results. All of my horrific, terrible, inflammatory symptoms are super consistent with what you all describe. I've had nearly 200 symptoms over the past 8 months. Odd quirky, horrible, traumatizing symptoms.
I've come a very long way in healing. My remaining symptoms are feeling emotionally empty, apathetic, and careless. It feels like the upper right portion of my brain isn't attached to the rest. I dealt with Bells Palsy although its basically recovered. Anyways, emotionally empty, mentally/cognitively impaired, damaged executive function, low dopamine - no drive/desires, gut issues, and fluttering/weak heart/heartbeat. Sometimes my heart spins into a massively fast heartbeat that makes me feel like I'm having a heart attack, so that's fun.
If anyone has any advice on anything that'll just improve this damn mood or get me cognitively sharpeenergized. That'd be great.

Just a mild vent, but it’s kinda annoying when I start my overnight run and wake up to my tournament results pausing the game.
I don’t have the option to wait it out until 1AM to continue overnight runs because I work early in the mornings, would make more sense for it to pop up once you end run and exit to home screen imo.

I'm not sure if I need help. I probably do, but I don't know where to start.
My mum and pops are amazing individuals, but the life i had with them when they were still together was hell for me. My dad constantly cheated on my mom. Then, it reached a point where I would have to protect my baby sister from seeing and hearing the physical, verbal, and emotional abuse. Our house was a one bedroom household with thin walls and no door, so we constantly witnessed my mom getting beaten up by my dad. We told her to leave him many times, but her own childhood trauma wouldn't let her raise her children without a father. From witnessing my mom fight my dad's mistress, to my dad moving to another country to start a new life with his affair partner, to my little sister confising our uncle for her father, to witnessing my mom's cry for help, to my dad telling her he didn't love her and so many more things my mom stayed with my dad. She would beg my father to stay with her and to change for his family his response was always the same " A bitch like you will never change me." The abuse reached to a point where my family wouldn't even intervine when my dad was beating my mom because she didn't want to leave him so what where they suppose to do. I almost got stabbed by my dad's mistress in our house property, which is when my neighbors got involved because it affected me. My mom finally decided to leave my dad because he got hooked to drugs and alcohol. He tried to hit me after I tried to stop him from raping my mom. I remember that conversation vividly. I told him that I hated him and to stop hurting my mom. He didn't like it and told me he will show me how to respect him and he was taking his belt of to hit me but my mom tried to stop him and then my grandma burst open the door and threatened him to let us go. So he did, and that was the last day my mom tolerated his bullshit. She separated from him after that incident. But my dad continued harassing and he almost killed my mom, and if I hadn't woken up, he would have killed my mom. He told her that he was going g to kill my mom and me and my sister, and then he would kill himself so this family ends and no one has a happily after. He ended up moving out of the country and got married again.After he started dating his current wife, he left my mom alone. I have talked to my dad about a therapist, but he told me no. My dad is a changed man, and I'm proud of the huge life changes he had. Nevertheless, I feel he disqualifies my trauma and states that I need to leave the past behind and that he doesn't remember anything I tell him he put us through. I believe it's because of the drugs. But what infuriates me is the fact that he discredits my feelings. When I confront him about him not helping us financially, it's always the same result. His new family is always involved that they suffered with during covid when he lost his job and that they lived every day, not knowing when their next meal would be at. Also, when he got sick with his heart, they were there for him and that they were with him in his tough moments in life moments were weren't present.Thank God his heart is doing better. I really appreciate them for being by his side. But I don't think he understands that the reason we aren't there with him is because of him. I understand some people aren't meant to be together, but the reason why my mom decided to leave is because of his actions. His wife has a daughter from the previous marriage, and he treats her like his daughter. He sometimes treats her better than us, and I'm aware that this girl witnessed her biological father beat her mom up, and then she witnessed my dad beat her mom in their early stage of their relationship. I'm not discrediting what she went through, but what annoys me is the fact that he says that she suffered with him, yet he discredits my traumas and states that the past is in the past.
My present problems
After my mom left my dad, I had a habit of biting my nails and the skin around my fingernails; an uncontrollable leg shake; a habit of biting any object I had in my hand and I became a paranoid person. I'm aware that I constantly seek attention and that I'm a pathological liar when it comes to my life events. I constantly feel like my life has no meaning, and I don't have a lot of friends. I only have 3, and during my high school life, I never made friends. You would have to approach me for me to talk to you. Currently, I'm in university, and I'm still the quiet, shy, reserved girl. The person my 2 friends think I am is a complete fake persona. My mom thinks I'm the perfect daughter, and that's not even true. I had a guy who was truly into me, but I couldn't communicate my feelings, and I was afraid that my feelings for him were becoming strong that I broke up with him and he didn't give up on me. He still finds me, and I recently started chatting with him again. I don't know what to do with my life. I feel lost and hopeless. Honestly, I just want to end it and stop being a burden.
Sorry for the long post. I've never done this before.

I paid full cash payment for a condo in 2019 - actual condo cost and another for the calculated na taxes and fees (documentary stamp, transfer tax, real estate tax etc). Ever since then, I’ve been following up and asking for clear timelines of my CCT - and they’ve assured me that they are currently processing and that all tax payments will be made by them while transfer is ongoing, all covered by the taxes and fees I paid in 2019.
Now they say CCT is available for pickup, but upon reconciliation of my account, the actual taxes and doc stamp incurred for my condo is more than the calculation they did in 2019, and wants me to pay first an additional 6-digit amount for the costs they shouldered on my behalf.
Is this the norm and can I challenge this? From my perspective - we aligned on a payment computation for this in 2019, why did the amount suddenly change? Thinking if may negligence ba on their end (maybe late payment of taxes?) that resulted in this

tl;dr: GF broke up with me because we're approaching the year mark and we aren't married/engaged yet, but we shared a lot together and I think it's all my fault and I want to fix it but I'm blocked everywhere.
Trigger alert: I've made a lot of mistakes but I'm just going to be blunt and honest to get actionable feedback. Also this is more-so of a different situation than most people as we're both Muslim-Americans and typically things are done more traditionally in our community.
Posting here because my posts in MuslimMarriage keep getting removed for reasons I don't think are fair.
Long story short, I met this girl about a year ago and we fell in love and met each other's families like 2 months in, went on trips secretly, even lived together for 4-5 months (all this in secret from our families) and had sex regularly. As far as our parents knew, we just met up once in a while, as we both live far away in a different city.
Our families initially got along well, but 6 months into it, her mom got mad at my family and called me to yell at me, for my parents asking some more details about her family with a different mutual family. Her parents are divorced and dad is not in the picture and very few male members of the family available to chat to. My parents as a result told me to hold off on the engagement/marriage for another 6 months and they got a bad feeling that her mother might cause some trouble for me later down the line as a result of her mother's phone call.
Approaching the 1 year mark, we were supposed to get engaged and then get married shortly after and we both went and bought a whole bunch of gold, dresses, etc, for the function and she was excited and so was I, and I paid for it all because I love this girl and want to be with her forever. But then my dad had an emergency surgery that popped up that delayed things by another month and she and her mom were really angry about this. 2 days later, she messages me over text saying she wants to end things, and now I'm blocked everywhere.
Of course, I'm embarrassed by this, but I only did this because I thought I was going to marry this girl. We have A LOT of history together now and it's killing me that I did all this with her and now she's just a stranger. Everyone knows that we were together, and I'm all in her university pictures for every function.
I honestly think her decision was greatly influenced by her mother who was getting annoyed that we hadn't made anything official, which I understand, but her actions slowed things down. If anything, when she called and yelled at me, my parents were ready to walk away from everything, so it took a while to even get them to come back and even agree to 6 more months. And if anything, now that we've spent all this time knowing each other, doing all of this, it's all the more reason that we should be together since we've done so much more.
It's been a month since this breakup happened and I've gotten nowhere; I've tried calling heher mom/her friends and its all radio silence. I emailed her with all the details, telling her that we can get married, as soon as in 2 weeks, and all that she needed to do was to call me back and I would sort out everything, but no response to that.
She used to tell me that she loved me and that she would never give up on us. She told me that she was a virgin and that she would never leave as we had given it up to each other and I feel so incredibly guilty about it too, because now I've shared this super big thing with someone who is now just a stranger. I really wish that she would at least just pick up the phone so that we can talk about it and I'm confident that we can sort out all of our issues if we just communicated but she's gone. My family tells me that this was a good thing for me because being in a relationship with someone who's so quick to leave, and someone who takes a hard line and doesn't want to communicate with you. They say that, it's possible that she would just leave/divorce you down the line when times got tough because it wasn't what she wanted, and that I got off "lucky" with just a break up. I don't know if that's true or not, but it does bother me so much that she always told me that she loved me and would never leave, but now she broke up with me over text and just vanished. It's so heartless and cold, especially with someone you've spent all this time with and all of these milestones.
We have so many memories together, so many trips, so many photos, so much everything and now it just hurts so much inside knowing that I shared all of these things with her and it looks like these things don't even mean much to her? Maybe she is thinking the same thing as me and crying as well and is just trying to take a hard line, but unsure of why? I guess I'll never know.
I've stopped reaching out at this point because it just seems pointless and I don't know if it's even helping. But I have this empty feeling inside of me and I don't know what to even do. I feel cheated and just frustrated and I'm so angry at myself for doing all of this with someone who was lying about their feelings throughout.
My friends told me to download the dating apps and find someone else, and I tried that but, it just feels like I'm cheating on my ex-girlfriend and I don't even want to do all that I did with her with someone else. I don't think I'll ever find anyone like her and I'm just super depressed and I feel like it's all my fault; if I had just proposed like 6-8 months in like she wanted, we wouldn't be here right now. Now I'm losing sleep over her every single night.

It also ignores that China itself didn’t ban cannabis until the 1985 when the UN and US asked them to. Ignoring the racist origin of the “Controlled substances act” was wrong. One of the architects of the law even admit it was a way to attack black Americans and other political opponents such as college kids. You don’t have to agree with drug legalization to know that objectively the start of the drug war with the passing of that law in 1970 was not about public health.
They totally mischaracterize the drug problem in the US by focusing on “marijuana” and ignoring that not a single drug death is due to marijuana, nearly all are from fentanyl, or stimulants like methamphetamine and cocaine. There is absolutely no connection between states with legal weed and states with high drug overdoses. Legal weed does not cause drug overdoses to increase. Alcohol use has increased dramatically and goes ignored, despite its real health problems. I have a lot more to say about it but reading their whole report was enough phone time for me.

Hi, I (57M) had just retired from corporate life & finally found the time to look through my personal finances to hopefully uncover any obvious shortfalls.
Was hoping that you folks can help to give me your inputs / comments wrt my personal finances heading into retirement (or where you believe that I'm better off going thru a review with financial consultants' oversight):
Family: wife (53F) , daughter (23F), son (20M) & I.
Stays in a 4-room condo in River Valley area (approx. $3.4 mil, fully paid up)
Drives a car with approx. 7 years left in its CoE (fully paid up)
CPF (combined between my missus & I): OA - $2.3 mil (mostly T-bills and Fixed Deposit) ; SA - $500k ; RA - $199k ; MA - $130k.
Cash (combined): $300k (T-bills) ; $150k (USD denominated fixed deposit) ; $2 mil (SGD fixed deposit) & probably 6-month emergency fund.
Bond (combined): $520k (yielding approx. 4% .. although there's a reset event next year which would adjust that yield to 5y SOR + 2.2%).
Shares (combined): $750k (SGX) ; $220k (HKEX) ; $20k (NYSE).
Insurance (combined): Term insurance (annual premiums: $1.8k) ; integrated shield plan (annual premiums: $3.5k); ILPs (annual premiums: $12k); careshield life & other assorted insurance plans (DPS etc.).
Wife is still working (she probably intends to call it a day in another 2-3 years time) & draws approx. $350k annually & I teach on an adjunct basis in a local university ($36k annually).
Not a lot to finance except the kids: daughter completing her Masters degree in UniMelb in 2024 (approx. $36k outstanding excl. living expenses) & son completing his LLB locally in 2026 (approx. $55k excl. living expenses) + 1-2 family holiday per year (approx. $20k). Long Term care for FIL (approx. 5k).
Given the above probably conservative setup (likely resultant from the lack of care rather than prudence), do you folks see any obvious blind spots which I should revise as I head into retirement ?

Maybe I'm part of a small minority or maybe not but before this season I used to absolutely enjoy farming the vanguard playlist when it was double Vanguard rep to not only grind rep but to also get some vanguard weapons. But the best part of that were the modifiers that allowed busted fun such as being able to infinitely spam high damage grenades with Grenadier or nuking bosses with parasite when it was solar singe Heavyweight. It was just simply fun
But with this season, they added 3 more modifiers that are quite frankly, really poor. The 3 new modifiers are Lighting Crystals, Ashes to Ashes and Subtle Foes. The first two modifiers, not only do they also give a debuff (when none of the old modifiers ever did) but they're also limited to certain elements. If it's void surge week, why am I seeing a modifier that only works with solar damage? Before the weekly modifier and the daily modifier used to work together and it used to result in crazy fun gameplay. Now with these two modifiers I have to choose which one I should be playing into (which it's always going to be the surge modifier as that 25% damage increase will always be better). Lighting Crystals should not pop up unless it's Stasis/Arc surge week and Ashes to Ashes should only appear when it's solar surge. But the absolute worst offender is Subtle Foes. It takes the place of a positive modifier... Yet provides zero benefit for the player. It only debuffs by giving certain combatants invis. So why in the world is it in the positive modifier slot??
These issues are definitely minor but it does suck to see something I used to enjoy, the vanguard playlist, just get worse with these ridiculous modifiers no one asked for. The Playlist suffers as is with it being more irrelevant with the pinnacles being able to be completed through the NF playlist and the Reputation gains being better through the NF playlist so why bury it even more in the ground with these modifiers?

Hi all. I play on a Bingo app which includes other games as well on my phone.
Anyways, in the Terms of service under taxes it says that you would be sent a tax form (1099-MISC, W9, etc) if you win in excess of $600 in any given year.
This is where i’m confused. I have definitely won over $600 throughout the year (not at once), but I would use most of my winnings for game play so really i’ve only deposited around $100 of winnings into my actual bank account over the year of 2022. I rarely deposited anything into my bank. I kept almost all of winnings in the bingo app and used it on games.
Does it still have to be reported since most the money I won never got deposited into my bank acct?
I’m asking because I never received a tax form of any sort. I contacted customer service thru the app (the have no phone number), asking how to get a tax form. They told me this:
“once the player meets the profit amount required to submit W-9 information, the system will trigger information when withdrawing cash, and the player may also submit W-9 information through a pop up window in the game. Players can submit by themselves”. I don’t know if the system is automated but they won’t help me any more than that.
I’ve read online that even if you don’t receive a tax form that you’re still required to report winnings. So, I would just like to know if in this situation it’s necessary.
I have played over 4,000 games and it would be a pain in the ass to itemize all of it and track my winnings if it’s unnecessary. It doesn’t give me a total of what i’ve won. Any help would be totally appreciated!

Fifteen gorgeous models enter their second judging of The Face Cycle 6.
This one feels different. There is more of a weight. It is their first elimination...
And all of the floral decor is gone.
Instead the two hosts and Twiggy walk in arguing.
"What do you mean she sued us for every penny?!" Ann shouts.
The models gasp. Ann can shout?
Atoosa types in her calculator, "Yeah, because her daughter entered the competition. Abby wants everything. Including your hosting position. She already took your flowers and your bees. And she wants Twiggy to replace me."
"Well, I would quite like that."
"SHUT UP, TWIGGY!"
The hosts turn to look at the models. Atoosa tosses the calculator aside.
"Welcome ladies!" Ann says in her usual cheery tone even as tears prick her eyes from the stress. "This week, you all portrayed gorgeous gorgeous people who were all dressed up with absolutely nowhere to go."
"Is that the new prize package now that we're being sued?" Atoosa asks before being hushed. "I mean, you know our prizes! The winner will receive: an international modelling contract with IMG Models AND Next Model Management, a one million dollar contract with MAC cosmetics, and you will become The Face of a brand of your choice! You will also be The Face of my brand Seventeen Again! Finally, you will receive a cover and spread in The Face magazine as well as a cash prize of $500,000!"
The models are unsure if they should clap until a sign blinks telling them to.
"We're going to skip team immunity for now," Ann shares. "As you know, last week, everyone was immune, so the winning team, Team 2, got a half point taken off from their photos. Will that impact results? Let's find out."
"Our first call out continues to shock and amaze us all. This beautiful model is the fashion time traveler this week, Tilda," Atoosa offers out the first photo to the model who walks up absolutely speechless. "Congratulations. You will be selecting the next brief and be the leader of Team 1."
Twiggy is the next up as she offers her photo, "Runner-up for best photo had people falling in love with her tutu and expression as she found there was nowhere to go. Congratulations, Nadja. You are Team 2's leader."
Ann reveals the third photo, "Our next photo belongs to Juju. You were a little divisive this week, but that's okay. We understood that your socks and heels look on a trashed couch meant you had absolutely nowhere else to go."
The next several photos are all called one after another.
Atoosa offers the fourth photo, "Audrey, this is angelic."
Twiggy tosses the fifth, "You're really starting to see yourself in this competition, Rebecca."
"Isabeli, you're showing great promise and emotion in this photo," Ann offers out the sixth photo to the model.
"It wasn't too far of a stumble, Joan. You still crushed it. People loved your storytelling this week," Atoosa assures the seventh call out.
Twiggy triumphantly waves the next photo, "Malika! Get up here! You were divisive this week, but you would rather have people talking than be ignored."
There is a sigh of relief as Ann reveals the next photo, "Jill. You broke the curse."
Another photo, "I think I saw this shoot in ANTM C20, Jessica. You look good."
Twiggy turns the next photo over, "Patricia. Another divisive one."
Ann reveals the next picture, "Daiane, you flew under the radar this week."
Three models remain, and only one can be saved from the Bottom 2.
"THANK YOU!" The model exclaims as Atoosa reveals her photo.
She hurries forward for it as Atoosa speaks, "I hope a boy never stands you up again because this photo either stole hearts or wanted to stand you up too. You're a strong model. Prove them wrong next week."
Twiggy approaches the final two models with only one photo in hand.

"Two models that the camera loves stand before me, but I only have this one picture in my hands. For one of you, your journey ends tonight."
She turns, "We'll start with you, Aube. This photo was a risk. I thought it was absolutely hilarious that you were in the middle of nowhere. You went to nowhere! However, others said that you were clearly at a destination, and they weren't sure how dressed up you were."
Twiggy looks to the other model, "Lineisy, your photo faced a similar criticism. People figured you were already at your destination, or you were about to leave since you and the child were dressed up. Unfortunately, it didn't hold the same spark as a similar photo in the competition, and that drew comparison. However, you still met the brief. You had nowhere to go."
Ann speaks up, "Team scores were close this week, so this is a case of immunity potentially saving a player. Let's see the numbers."
The three teams photos appear on the collage as the numbers start rolling. They go up, they go down, they go side to side.
One team fades out and all of the models wrinkle their noses in disappointment.
Only two teams remain.
One more fades.
Twiggy offers the final photo.
"Lineisy, even without your team, you would be safe. However, in this game, your team is your greatest support. If they fail, you fall with them here in the bottom 2. Congratulations, you are still in the running to becoming The Face."
The two models hug tight as the saved model walks forward to collect her photo.
Ann goes to comfort the eliminated model as she sobs in her arms, "There, there. Did you know you have one of my favorite looks in this entire competition? You submitted your Polaroid and I was like WOW we have to cast Aube! You have the look, and I'm sure you can work it. Come back fighting in comebacks, okay?"
The model sniffles and nods. She goes to hug all of her brand new friends goodbye before turning and exiting the panel room. They would see her again. Then they would all see.

yeah yeah i know no one knows what theyre doing but fuck. guess i'll give this a shot. im 21 and graduating in may and feel so completely burnt out despite me not having the heaviest workload ever. my senior capstone class is pissing me off because not one person knows what they're doing for their final paper and im so ready to just meet with my prof and play the crying neurodivergent card. i want to just do the bare minimum until i finish the semester but in some ways i feel that i already am? i keep contemplating how much that gpa really means to anyone bc i want to give up but also dont want everything ive done so far to tank. regardless i feel like shit, dont want to do any of my final papers let alone lighter assignments, and dont get me started on the dread of getting a job. i feel revoltingly money desperate, not money hungry per se but im taking extra shifts at my campus job and trying to make quick cash through focus groups/studies i find on here or craigslist. hell im donating blood for quick cash. ive been barley finding the time to eat this month and my body/health is probably suffering from that, stress, limited exercise, and messed up sleep. im terrified its not gonna get better once i graduate tho and part of me wants more time in school. more time to keep my campus jobs, more time to be forced to get out and socialize everyday, more time to utilize university resources and connections to get a job. fuck maybe even more time to actually form a solid friend group and actually date. i havent fucking dated. the pandemic ruined everything and i feel like time has slipped through my fingers. i spend all my energy to get good grades and a semblance of income only to have mediocre results in both plus no social life and lousy physical and mental health. im so looking forward to finishing my degree but feel like ill completely plummet into a mental hole once i dont have all these silly college worries and responsibilities and left with the Real World. im just talking in circles now but fuck im just so so tired, but is the alternative much better?
tl;dr: graduating soon, want to give up on maintaining grades, dread post grad "Real World" shit.

Hi all. I play on a Bingo app on my phone.
Anyways, in the Terms of service under taxes it says that you would be sent a tax form (1099-MISC, W9, etc) if you win in excess of $600 in any given year.
This is where i’m confused. I have definitely won over $600 throughout the year (not at once), but I would use most of my winnings for game play so really i’ve only deposited around $100 of winnings into my actual bank account over the year of 2022. I rarely deposited anything into my bank. I kept almost all my earnings within the Bingo app and played it.
Does it still have to be reported since most the money I won never got deposited into my bank acct?
I’m asking because I never received a tax form of any sort. I contacted customer service thru the app (the have no phone number), asking how to get a tax form. They told me this:
“once the player meets the profit amount required to submit W-9 information, the system will trigger information when withdrawing cash, and the player may also submit W-9 information through a pop up window in the game. Players can submit by themselves”. I don’t know if the system is automated but they won’t help me any more than that.
I’ve read online that even if you don’t receive a tax form that you’re still required to report winnings. So, I would just like to know if in this situation it’s necessary.
I have played over 4,000 games and it would be a pain in the ass to itemize all of it and track my winnings if it’s unnecessary. It doesn’t give me a total of what i’ve won. Any help would be totally appreciated!

Allah leaned against one of the tables, purring softly. Li was beside her swiftly, gripping her shoulder reassuringly.
“But we’re not gonna let that happen,” the human promised. “And you’re going to help.”
“I knew they were evil,” Allah started to say but stopped. She bit her lip, tail flicking up a cloud of dust in the long disused room. The lights flickered again and the U’knock clawed at the glow stick on the table beside her, holding it before her, eager to have something stable to hold onto.
Li patted her shoulder again and turned to the table with the helmets. She lifted one to Allah’s head, pursed her lips and set it down. She picked up another, nodding in satisfaction, and began taking it apart. “I’m sure they think the same thing about humans,” she said.
“Who would care what they think?” Allah tried to keep the bile from her voice.
“PsyOps,” Li answered, as if the strange word should explain everything. When Allah only lowered her ear in confusion she said “‘If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither, you will fail in every battle’.” The human smiled. “The swarmers consider us a meddling subspecies that steals the resources that are rightfully theirs. We keep getting in their way, preventing ‘progress’ and forming unnatural alliances with other, lesser, organisms.”
“You sound like you have spoken to them.”
Li nodded. She removed two panels from the top of the helmet. “I’ve spoken to millions of them,” she admitted, then said softly, “I was probably the last voice most of them ever heard.”
She lifted the helmet and adjusted it to fit atop Allah’s head. “These millions,” the U’knock asked, “are all dead?”
The Defender nodded. “Very much so,” Li’s tone was light but the human face was a stone mask in the green light. The overheads flickered like lightning, casting her in hard brightness before the green gloom returned to paint dark shadows under her eyes and mouth. It made her look more predatory; a hunter hiding in tall grass, bent to pounce.
Li removed more sections from the helmet, the odd thing sliding down around Allah’s ears.
“I would like to know how to kill that many.”
A different kind of shadow crossed the human’s face, a sadness that cracked through the hardness.
Li turned to the panels she had removed, taking a pair of tiny buttons out. She held one up and turned Allah’s head, trying to fit the button in the U’knock’s ear.
“Let's hope you don’t have to find out,” Li said, trying a different button from a different helmet. “It was a pretty expensive day for me.
“And I’m still paying the tab.”
Li patted Allah’s shoulder again. The U’knock turned to look at her.
“Looks like that fits,” the human forced a grin. She handed Allah another button. “How's it feel?”
“Strange,” Allah admitted. She shook her head and felt the button wiggle inside her ear. “What is this?”
“Virtual Reality Education Helmet,” Li grinned again but the smile did not reach her eyes. “Welcome to Primary School.”
Allah tapped the thing on her head with a claw. It was stiff, but not hard like bronze. And it held an odor--several--of something cheesy and vinegary and a little moldy all at once.
“Careful,” Li cautioned. “Plastic that old can get pretty brittle.”
The U’knock wondered why humans would use something so obviously inferior if they could make things with the new metal. Then she considered her mother’s Com’Cha and retracted her claw from the gift. Even if a warrior offered a replacement made entirely of new metal, the old bronze weapon held a special place in her life.
Perhaps these helmets held such prestige for Li’s people?
“This will teach me to fight?” she asked, trying to muster the proper amount of reverence for the object.
“No,” Li shook her head, “I’ll take on that job. And Jung, too. This,” she tapped the helmet on Allah’s head, “will teach you basic commands and instructions for ground equipment and the extravehicular combat suit. You remember the mess hall? How hard it was just to get hot water from Demeter?” Allah nodded, perking and flattening her ears, “That's because you weren’t ‘thinking’ the right words. We’ll start you out with English because Demeter uses that by default. Once you have basic commands memorized, we’ll move to general tactics, strategy, and combat.”
“You used this,” Allah touched the helmet. It was cool, hard, alien in her head, “as a child?”
Li chuckled. “No,” she admitted. “V-REHs are intended to acclimate xenoforms--species other than human--to our ways. From farmer to front line fighter, there’s a training program for just about any job.
“That's also why the helmets are so modular,” she gestured to the discarded pieces. “They can accommodate almost any ‘head’ shaped configuration; kitty cat ears, literal four eyes. In some cases, like the Shoo, they can accommodate a species with no head at all.
“I gotta get back to work,” Li left the mess where it lay and strode toward the door. “Demeter, offload basic command lessons one through thirty to a microcore at the Romeo-02 terminal.
“C-c-commmmmmmmmmmPlying!”
“Can we trust Demeter to provide proper instructions?” Allah asked. Fears from last night--particularly one about melting brains--crossed her thoughts as they strode down the hall.
“I’ll do a quick file check to make sure but,” Li looked over her shoulder. She chuckled at Allah’s expression: ears flat, lips pushed out and constantly glancing upward to try to “see” the thing on her head. “V-REHs can’t hurt you. Maybe trick you into walking into a wall, but that won’t be an issue; the basic lessons are designed to be used while seated.
Do you need to poop or anything before you start? You could be in there for a while.
Allah nodded, eliciting another trip to another room similar to the showers aboard Star dancer, filled with more tiny rooms. This one was cream colored, and inside each room was a tiny cream colored throne with a bowl in the seat.
Li stood outside, giving instructions on the throne’s--the bidet toilet’s--use. Then it was back to the room of warriors--the security station, Li corrected--and Allah’s first lesson.
“Touch the V-REH,” Li lifted her hands to her own head, pressing her palms to her temples, “here. It’ll run through a self adjustment process and I’ll link it to your nanites. That should speed things up a lot.”
“Will it hurt?” Allah asked, “as much as last time?”
“This shouldn’t hurt at all,” Li said with a grin, “so if it does either take it off immediately or ask me to. It might be disorienting at first though so get comfy.”
Allah returned to the corner and settled on the hard floor, sitting cross legged. As she did, Li returned to and began tapping on the face of the monitor. A soft click sounded and a tiny shiny stone flickered in the faltering lights. Allah had still not touched the V-REH when Li moved the stone to another hole, pressed on her keyboard with her fingers and nodded in satisfaction. She turned in the tiny throne and regarded Allah quizzically.
“I can’t initiate a session for you,” Li said by way of explanation. “It’s designed to be voluntary, so nothing can. I can disengage you but that's about it.” She stood, walked the short distance to Allah’s corner and held out the stone to the U’knock. “The V-REH will need to calibrate with you, then recognise it needs this,” Li pressed the stone into Allah’s paw.
“I’ll be right here if you need anything,” the human pointed to the monitor, turned and strode to the throne.
Allah looked at the tiny stone. In the flickering lights, she had thought it was white. Up close, however, it looked more of a pale green. She carefully picked it up to inspect. As she did, it moved away from the light of the glowing stick beside her and captured the myriad hues projected by Li’s monitor. The stone shifted in color again, a dizzying burst of different colors packed so close together they appeared white again.
Why was she hesitating? Allah had pledged to help defend her planet, had stood before the quorum of Umati’clam and professed it as fact. Now, she dithered. Li had returned to her work, finger beating a rhythm like raindrops on the surface of the table. Allah felt alone, ignored. And part of her realized that she was. Li had good reason to--she was working to save Allah’s people--and to grow upset because her friend so easily turned to the task was beyond petty.
“What if I don’t?” Allah asked aloud.
Li’s fingers stopped suddenly, then the human placed her hands in her lap. She did not turn to look at Allah, but sat with the stone mask again and stared at the monitor.
“It's your choice, Allah,” she said slowly, “and it’s not one I can make for you. If you’re asking ‘Will I throw you out on the street?’ or ‘Will we stop looking for your father?’ the answer to both is no. I took you in last night, frankly, because you had the lowest chance of survival of those around me. Those that,” Li sighed, pulling on the thin cored that held her hair in a tail. “Those that had a chance.”
She shook her head, combing her fingers through the long, thick black hair. “I know you’re worried that you won’t be much help. And you’d rather be out there,” she gestured to the screen, wiggling her fingers. The glyphs disappeared to be replaced by images from seven times two plus two drones patrolling the city and the surrounding wasteland. “Looking for him right now.”
“That’s not what I--”
“And I know you’re scared,” Li interrupted. “And angry. You’ve got good reason to be. This…won’t be much fun when the shooting starts.” She did turn now, the sad smile that would not reach her eyes painting her lips. “But you were right,” she said. “I do need a friend. I’d like that friend to still be you in the morning.”
The human shrugged her shoulders. “I'm sorry to put that on you. I don't want to add to your burdens.” And Li turned back to the monitor and began tapping again.
Allah did not know what to say. She sat in the corner, watching Li return to work. Allah had felt alone, afraid. And angry, yes. But what must Li be feeling right now? Her own people had abandoned her quest. She stood in defiance of the bullies and defenders now.
This planet's protector.
“When I finish with this machine,” Allah asked, “we will pop the corn and speak of mates?”
The corner of Li’s mouth rose. “And watch Journey To The West while I paint your claws.”
Allah nodded. This was a burden she could, would, must happily bear. To stand beside Li, no matter the cost. Not out of honor, nor pride. Not even to save her people.
She would do this because her friend asked her to.
The U’knock raised her paws to either side of the helmet, pressing gently.
