I had a delivery that ended up at senior VA hospital / nursing home for one the residents . The senior citizen claimed she ordered food but I told her that it was only drinks that popped up and the restaurant only got her order of drinks. I was thoroughly disappointed the other day in Lynchburg VA. I am a very frequent customer at the Texas Roadhouse chain restaurant and during travels through the area I decided to stop at the local location in Lynchburg. Server seemed to be having a rough day and there was a few disputes because my wife was obviously annoyed with how long we had been waiting and when mentioning it to our server, he got very defensive. We finally ordered and received our order after a while and I’m convinced that there was pubes in my mash. We brought this to the attention of our waiter and he became very defensive again and while debating speaking to the manager we decided to just leave as we were under the impression he may of done this on purpose. I'll go to the USA for Work&Travel program this summer. I'll spend 2 months working near Richmond, VA, then I'll have about a week for travelling somewhere before going back to Richmond and then home.
Where should I go? Is it worth it spending a day or two just for travelling to/back from West coast? Should I stay close to Richmond?

So, I've been looking forward to going to Japan for a good portion of my life and initially when planning the trip, we had a horrible travel agent. We originally wanted to go mid, late-May, but long story short, the travel agent screwed up and our trip got pushed into June as a result. Or do those need to be booked in advance? Thinking it might be worth it for having a bit more space for luggage and stuff.

As you might be able to tell, we're not really big on planning, and usually extemporaneously just like to explore places when we get there. But right now, my biggest concerns are how much luggage to actually bring for the trip (maybe I just do laundry somewhere halfway through), how much the rainy season will dampen (heh) the trip (is it a full day rain, or something unintrusive like 15 minutes of light rain every couple of hours?), and whether or not buying a Kansai Area Pass is worth it? (Doing the math, the JR rail pass didn't make sense, but 9 days in Kyoto/Osaka leads me to think that might work out)

We're going to be spending most of our time in Italy in small towns in the country, but we will be in Rome and Venice at the two ends of the trip, and I would love to plan some surprise stops that explicitly cater to our kids' interests. I'm currently a computer science intern, and I went to Denny's after work today. I'm really tired after a long week, and just wanted something quick and easy. As I was walking into the restaurant this guy in a Denny's employee outfit came up to me and started introducing himself and started talking about how exciting it was that we both worked for DoD. First of all, I don't work for the DoD, and unless DoD stands for "Denny's of Dumfries, VA," - he clearly doesn't either. I want to ask him if I could just eat alone but he just won’t let me say anything.
He then started raving about Purdue and asking me whether some "high level" (200 level) courses were still being offered in Krannert. He’s telling me about how he started one semester at Purdue but dropped out because he flunked out (ENGL 106 is hard, apparently). At this point, I still haven't been able to get a word in edgewise and am just trying to eat.
This man won't stop rambling to me. The Whole. Fucking. Meal.
I then walk to the metro so that I can get to my place in Fredericksburg and this man follows me. The Whole. Way. Home.
He's currently standing outside my door raving about Zach Edey and how he hopes to get back into Purdue someday. It's 11:50pm, and I'm really just trying to sleep. Should I call the police or something to make him go away?

Sorry for the length, I'm not sure what's relevant. Dad served in the Navy from 1975 to 1982 on aircraft carriers. He served honorably and received a General Discharge. When he got out he believed he wouldn't qualify for benefits, so he never tried to apply for them. He lived his personal American Dream until five years ago when a botched surgery made walking difficult. He lost his medical insurance right before COVID hit, and the ACA options were too expensive or didn't cover enough. So he just decided to tough things out for a few years until he turned 65 and could apply for Medicare, which was early last year. By that point a once vibrant, active, independent man was mostly confined to a wheelchair, unable to stand on his own, and required his family to assist in his every day care. He hasn't been able to leave his home (except for medical appointments) in three years.
The instant he got approved for Medicare we started chucking doctors at him, and within 10 months they had confirmed his ALS diagnosis, which was a punch to the gut to say the least. The best thing about Medicare is the in-home therapists that come help him with balance, exercise, and practicing ADLs. It was these Medicare OTs and PTs who finally convinced him to apply for benefits by explaining all the things the VA does that Medicare doesn't (a dedicated ALS Clinic, grants to renovate home and vehicle for accessibility, better medical equipment, respite care, etc.). I'm glad they got the stubborn goat to finally see reason even if I'd been saying the exact same thing for years with no traction. I'm forever grateful to those techs, though. The application process was a bit onerous but once we got that accepted everything else went off like a rocket.
He's recently had his intake at his local VA Hospital and due to the nature of his diagnosis they are fast tracking his packet. They got him working with two social workers (one VA and one Medicare in collaboration) and a VSO who is specifically trained to work with veterans with ALS. My folks have been pleasantly surprised and relieved by the expert care and competence at the VA, especially as Medicare wasn't actually sending him people with experience with ALS. Even with the existing dx they obviously aren't guaranteeing a specific rating or giving an exact timeframe to expect a decision letter, and all the while my mom feels like time is quickly running out. The not knowing is wearing down both my parents and I can't do much to assure them that everyone is working as fast as they can and the ALS Clinic wasn't just blowing smoke when they talked about the kinds of benefits we'll have access to. (Their only other experience with VA benefits was watching me struggle for 10 months to get my rating, and though I keep promising that will NOT be the case here I know they are still worried)
It's not even the cash benefits that we are so desperate for. What would help the most are the other benefits like getting a hospital bed with trapeze lift and transfer board, durable medical equipment, and the renovation grants to make the house actually accessible. We have been DIYing the house accommodations out of sheer necessity and calling it janky is kind. We installed an accessible shower, grab bars, bought medical furniture second hand, and an "off the rack" motorized chair (which is on its last legs... wheels? He needs a better one that actually fits him) all out of pocket and we are running out of things to sell. The existing layout of the house not being set up for wheelchairs etc. has resulted in my dad falling or getting trapped multiple times, and makes doing transfers dangerous. My poor mom is burned out and I try to tell her that the ALS Clinic and VSO aren't just blowing smoke about the promises of assistance, everyone is moving as fast as they can, but she can't help but think he is decompensating faster because we have substandard everything. She's worried that by the time everything clicks into place it will be too late. I understand why she feels that way, and I can't find the words to comfort her. I am doing my best to do my part by helping with the domestic side of things (cooking, laundry, errands) but I'm an hour away so my abilities are limited.
Other than encouraging my mom to maintain regular contact with the VSO and social workers, to ask questions at every medical appointment, and not be afraid of voicing a concrete need and asking if there is a service/request form for that, is there anything more I can do that might help with their stress and doubt? I know the VA has their own Access vans for pick ups/drop offs and I did make sure they were all set up for that, but if we could figure out how to transport him without a $$$ "handi cabbie" he could definitely still enjoy outings like restaurants and parks and stuff.
I have ONE concrete question, I guess. In discussions about non-cash VA benefits my folks have heard multiple versions of the "grants for vehicle/home accessibility" thing. They've heard that the grant is only to modify an existing vehicle, or that they can get a larger grant to buy an accessible van, or that it's our responsibility to find and purchase said accessible van and they can file for reimbursement. Neither of our cars are large enough to accommodate my dad and his wheelchair, and since he won't ever be able to drive again anyway (or even be able to sit in a regular car seat) we were really hoping that the VA could help us find and fund a van.
Again I apologize for the length here, I did try to make it concise but everything is just so overwhelming. I'm a disabled veteran myself, but even though I've been working with the VA for over a decade I don't have the same needs as my father so I can't definitively say who is right and what is available. The last thing I want to do is give my folks false hopes or promises, but I hate how helpless I feel and I know that they must be feeling 100x as worried and scared.

Je suis actuellement en Erasmus à Sofia en bulgarie. Je n'étais pas rassuré à l'idée de venir en Bulgarie parce que j'ai souvent entendu que la ville était dangereuse et le pays très corrompu par les mafias en plus des idéologies conservatrices qui se sont avérées vraies sur place.
Je suis en appartement avec 6 autres étrangers, mon appartement est le premier lorsqu'on entre dans l'appartement qui est situé au 5e étage dans un immeuble de 5 étages constitué exclusivement de bureaux à part notre appartement.
Mon appartement est situé au coeur de Sofia, près du palais de justice, c'est l'espace le plus au centre de la ville qui est accessible par Vitoshka Blvd, l'artère principalement de Sofia avec beaucoup de restaurants et boutiques, et forcément beaucoup de monde le soir et même la nuit jusqu'à 6h du matin, puisqu'on retrouve beaucoup de bars et fastfood qui ne ferment jamais.
Ma chambre donne directement sur la rue principale, avec beaucoup de bruit, constamment. J'ai deux rangées de fenêtres mais qui n'isolent pas vraiment comme un double vitrage devrait permettre. Je n'ai qu'un rideau très fin qui laisse passer la lumière et ne coupe pas la lumière du jour.
C'est mon tout premier post sur Reddit parce que j'ai véritablement vécu un truc tétanisant la deuxième nuit que j'ai passé à Sofia, il y a près de deux semaines. Vers 03h du matin (pour avoir checké mon tel), au moment où je dors vraiment parce que c'est en général le plus calme, et on n'entend plus le bruit du tramway qui passe devant l'immeuble en faisant énormément de bruit parce qu'il est vieux, je me suis réveillé en entendant un mec hurler. Plusieurs de mes collocs m'ont avoué ne même pas s'être réveillés tellement ils étaient habitués au bruit maintenant des gens dans la rue, fraichement arrivé je ne l'étais pas.
L'homme poussait des hurlements et on pouvait sentir dans ses cris la douleur qu'il ressentait. Je n'exagère pas en disant que je ne suis pas prêt d'oublier le bruit que faisait ce mec, qui hurlait en bulgare et qu'on entendait tout au bout de la rue. Les cris dans la rue ont duré plus de 20 à 30 minutes jusqu'à ce que je n'entende plus rien d'un coup.
J'ai eu le temps de me reposer 10-15 minutes quand je me suis réveillé subitement en entendant des énormes bruits en plus des cris qui reprenaient, beaucoup plus proches de ma chambre. Les bruits, sur le moment je pensais que c'était des coups de feux. C'était tellement bruyant et tellement rapproché comme bruit que ça pouvait pas être un homme qui poussait des poubelles dans la rue ou donnait des coups dans les vitrines...
Vers 04h du matin, je n'arrivais plus à tenir avec tout le bruit qui ne s'était pas arrêté et je suis allé regarder par la fenêtre si je pouvais voir le mec ou ce qui se passait, parce que j'avais vu plus furtivement et plus tôt des personnes dans la rue quand tout à commencé, qui regardaient vers l'homme à l'opposé de la rue et essayer de partir de la rue. Si l'homme avait une arme à feu, c'était normal pour moi que ces personnes s'enfuyaient aussi rapidement de la rue. Alors en regardant vers 04h du matin, j'ai vu une voiture de police avec gyrophares bleus et une voiture avec des lumières jaunes ainsi qu'une dizaine de personne devant mon immeuble à rentrer l'entrée.
Et c'est là que j'ai compris que ce n'était pas des coups de feu mais l'homme à l'intérieur de notre immeuble qui donnait des coups dans les différentes portes de l'immeuble, et comme on l'a appris le lendemain, a totalement détruit les portes et l'intérieur de l'ascenseur qui était à 100% en bois.
Et c'est là que j'ai entendu l'homme monter jusqu'à notre étage et que j'ai entendu ses hurlements comme s'il était à 2 pas de moi. En fait il était vraiment aussi près de moi que ça, puisque comme je vous l'ai expliqué au début, ma chambre est face à la porte d'entrée, la première pièce/chambre dans le couloir quand on entre dans l'appartement.
Et c'est là que j'ai compris qu'après avoir défoncé notre porte, la première pièce dans laquelle il entrerait ce serait la mienne.. la porte d'entrée n'était pas costaud, un homme aussi bourré et en douleur pourrait facilement la casser. Et ma porte de chambre n'était fermée que par un léger loquet, qui peut également être explosée par n'importe qui. C'est à ce moment que j'ai pris peur, que je pensais que j'allais mourir pour être honnête. Je n'ai jamais eu aussi peur de ma vie, je pensais à mes parents, à mon erasmus que je voulais réaliser et ce que ça aurait été si je n'avais pas voulu en faire ou si j'avais été dans une ville plus safe.
Alors j'ai décidé que je ne voulais pas mourir. Je suis sorti de ma chambre sur la pointe des pieds en pleurant, parce que j'étais tétanisé. Je sentais ma main qui tremblait et j'ai eu beaucoup de mal à ouvrir ma porte de chambre même si le loquet était simple à enlever.
Je suis allé à la porte d'entrée et j'ai essayé regardé par le judas pour voir si l'homme était encore là quand je l'entendais plus. Je n'arrivais pas à discerner l'homme dans le noir, vu qu'il n'y a pas de lumières dans l'escalier (vieil immeuble soviétique). Et là j'ai vu une forme bouger, entendu les cris juste devant moi et senti la porte trembler en entendant les énormes bruits de coups qu'il mettait dans la porte en criant/pleurant de douleur.
Alors je me suis enfui dans la cuisine de l'appartement en coloc, parce que je savais que c'était le seul endroit où je pouvais me réfugier au cas où l'homme arriverait à entrer. Dans la cuisine il y avait une salle de bain sans fenêtre, accessible par une porte très lourde et impossible à casser de l'extérieur, il y a une énorme serrure qui me donnait un sentiment de sécurité.
J'ai attendu sur le sol pendant 30 minutes, pendant que l'homme continuait de frapper et hurler. Jusqu'à ce que je n'entende plus rien. À part des espèces de gémissement et pleurs. On a appris plus tard que les forces interventions de polices sont intervenus dans l'immeuble pour exilftrer l'homme avant qu'il entre dans notre appart.
L'homme était soul, pas d'arme à feu. Il avait dû se blesser car on a retrouvé beaucoup de sang sur la porte d'entrée et dans tout l'immeuble le lendemain. L'ascenseur ne refonctionnera pas avant plusieurs années, l'immeuble est trop vieux pour en installer un nouveau.
Erasmus Bulgare a suivi toute l'affaire et était génial, ils ont proposé un hébergement secondaire avec des françaises pas très loin, au calme, que je connaissais déjà. Mais j'ai refusé de changer car mes colocs m'ont redonné confiance le lendemain et ils m'ont même proposé de passer dans leur chambre au cas où j'avais peur un soir.
Maintenant ça va mieux, j'ai pu visiter sofia la journée qui est une très belle ville et pas si dangereuse que ça quand on sait prendre les allées très fréquentées. La nuit j'ai toujours du mal et je ne rentre jamais seul, je vais pouvoir finir mon erasmus sans difficulté. Mais je n'oublierais jamais les cris de l'homme dans ma tête et l'idée de mourir. Il n'y a rien de plus effrayant que lorsqu'on sent que l'on risque quelque chose.
Tout ceci est réel, pas du putaclic. J'avais besoin de m'exprimer là dessus pour extérioriser. Je ne sais pas ce qui est arrivé à l'homme, je ne sais pas s'il est en prison ou s'il est à nouveau dehors. Je ne sais pas si c'était un homme qui venait de rompre ou un SDF. Je ne sais pas s'il va revenir.

Hey Freditors. The wife and I decided to come down and stay in your fair city on a last minute whim as a home base for hitting up wineries, breweries, and some short hiking in MD and NoVA. Plan so far is to try and stop by the wineries near Mt Airy on the way in tomorrow PM. Then head to Bluemount VA area Sat AM and work our way back through Loudoun, maybe via Harpers Ferry. Sun is wide open.
Think we have a res one night at Wine Kitchen, and definitely want to check out the in town breweries , especially the cluster near the creek.
