2023.03.21 12:33 PutridBite Last of the Defenders - Ch 27

Welcome new readers. Please start with chapter one https://www.reddit.com/HFY/comments/11ai7iv/last_of_the_defenders_ch_01/
Previously https://www.reddit.com/HFY/comments/11x94mq/last_of_the_defenders_ch_26/
It took hours. Allah realized the sun was walking away when they finally stepped out of the great quorum hall. Ada’key’hamda and Allah’hem’nrah walked to either side of Li, a group of elders and tradesmen flocking behind. They carried charcoal and papers, hastily drawn maps and long scrolls of lists--names of the future displaced, materials to be salvaged, and more workers than she could count--as they jostled to be heard over each other.
Allah glanced over her shoulder as the wide double doors began to close, ears twitching frustratingly at Marn’charlie’weh who stood on the dais still, amber eyes glowing with barely contained fury. She had been the most vocal of the group surrounding her now, the Detractors Allah called them in her mind. Most of their arguments had been weighed and addressed--even bringing forth solutions to unforeseen problems as the idea of extending the roads had progressed from Li’s ultimatum into cooperative planning.
Both sides had compromised. The southern Smithhall and much more of the buildings between the outpost and the outer wall would be torn down. The proposed road to the north would be almost doubled in width too, to accommodate the increase in traffic. More importantly, to Allah’s way of thinking, were the inclusion of U’knock work crews into Li’s plan. Her people would oversee the construction of the roads and tearing down the city’s outer wall to make rapidly usable materials.
It had been that last point that nearly set Allah’hem’nrah and Marn’charlie’weh to blows. This had only been the second quorum she had been honored to sit in, neither of them as a member, but the vociferousness and vitriol that passed from mouth to ear had startled her.
“You claim a need to protect our people!” Allah could still remember Marn’charlie’weh shout. It had woken her from her dozing. “And with the other paw you rip down the very walls that shelter us! Holes in the inner ring? Dismantling the outer? Will you take all of our warrior caste with you to fight the bullies too? If they are bullies!”
Li had risen from the floor to confront the black elder, Marn’charlie’weh almost twice the height of the human even then, but a spotted paw thrust between them and Allah’hem’nrah walked to block her.
“I will not be shamed,” she roared, the only time the stalwart pride mother raised her voice, “by this council as to cower and hide while a cub fights for our lives!”
She had pointed to Allah who, at the time, was shamelessly curled up on a cushion. The cub, roused from her dozing, sat up, licked a forepaw and made a show of grooming her fur. It was not Allah’s fault she had fallen asleep; they would not stop talking! On and on they went, arguing over the most minute details only to circle back on a once settled matter and point out how doing one thing would somehow upset two others. Even when it did not. Especially when it did not!
“The warriors will fight in this war!” and the proclamation from Allah’hem’nrah had elicited a scattered cheer from half the quorum.
Li had spent much of the quorum kneeling on a Nameday cushion--anything larger than the small pad used to carry kits to the quorum when they opened their eyes would have swallowed her--sipping water from a clay cup and only put in suggestions when directly asked. Which became less and less frequent as the day dragged on toward night. Allah only realized how long they had been there when Jung reminded her to take her pill!
“I think,” Li had said, rising from her cushion and stretching, “we’ve settled what we can in one day.” Allah rose to follow, eager to be away from these screaming, argumentative adults. “If you have something of substance to add, I’ll be outside the south gate at sunrise,” and the last of her words had a hint of warning, “about an hour before the first tank is scheduled to roll out.”
With that, Li rose, bowed to the throne dais, and strode purposely from the great hall.
And now they walked, not as unwelcomed outlanders who should be chased off, but as people of importance whose presence was harkened by quorum members begging attention.
Or, at the least, Li did. Allah found herself carefully shuffled further and further away from her friend, carefully avoiding elders who jostled past her and ever more dangerously close to the taser belt’s kiss. They did not seem to care, even knowing what the belt could do after Li explained its workings and Guard Captain Fen’ja--belatedly arrived, washed and no longer twitching--had confirmed.
Perhaps, Allah considered, another demonstration was in order. Let one brush up against her? And through a wall? She set such petty thoughts aside. These people were preparing as if for a great storm coming to the land. Shoring up the city for a blizzard named Li.
And the bully horde that followed.
Allah contented herself with being persistently pushed back. If she could contribute, she would try. What she was asked, she would answer. And she would not fault Li. Her friend had been as good as her word and as they stepped outside the cub saw a scribe carrying a stack of posters in her paws, could hear a crier chant “Fey’arna of Hada’neha is requested and required to make his presence known to the nearest city guard. A reward is offered for his safe return.” Surely her father would be found soon, news of him at the least and Allah would go to him.
But for now, Allah had made a promise to Li. She would stand beside her friend…if these quorum members ever got out of the way…
Allah busied her eyes and ears in learning this new place. The smell was only U’knock, a packed down scent of many bodies forced together. It reminded her of the mob. Even as the sun was setting behind the tall buildings the street was alive. Tradeswomen and males carried their goods, families shopped at stalls and cubs ran in play or just from the joy of slipping a father’s leash for a time. The buildings were all taller than any hut, packed into squares and high roofed rectangles. Only the doors and the largest structures were domed. Even the glass in the new windows had straight, with sharp unnatural edges.
That was the word Umati’clam conjured to her: unnatural. Even with so many--because there were so many--of her people packed within, Allah felt more and more like a stranger in these confines. How long had she dreamed of walking the fabled city streets? Now she would give up her tail to curl up on her cushion in front of the fireplace, claw the rough burlap and kneed the straw inside to lay her head down and rest. To be home and safe again.
With her fa.
She was not expecting guards when they reached the wall. Four of the metal humans stepped outside the bubble as it popped, speaking in Demeter’s voice.
“Stand away from the entrance,” they said as one, raising black bowless Com’cha with those deadly tubes in their place. “This is your only warning.”
“I’ll do what I can,” Li said by way of apology as the throng of quorum members receded slowly from the opening wall, “but our timetable is going to be tight. Remember Allah’hem’nrah,” she continued, motioning Allah to step forward, “I want at least two level headed warriors per village. These people are not beggars or simply displaced. And they may be vital to rebuilding your home.”
“I do not see how,” the spotted warrior stepped back as Allah stepped closer, “but we will do as you command, Defender.”
“Uh uh,” Li admonished, wagging a finger at the massive U’knock.
“Li,” Allah’hem’nrah corrected, her lips tightening.
Li gestured to Allah again and the two stepped through.
“Could not your ambassador,” Ada’key’hamda called but did not step past the robot guards, gray fur bristling as the first night wind chilled her, “stay with us longer, Friend Li? We still have questions she might be uniquely capable of answering.”
Li and Allah both turned back, the human grinning with a light bow. “That holds true for me too,” the human said softly. “Unfortunately, Allah’s duties at the moment will be keeping her close to me. Any questions can be relayed through these droids,” she gestured to the armed machines. “They can relay any pertinent queries to Jung or myself through Demeter.”
The wall began to seal itself and Allah’hem’nrah raised one paw in the air, waving it back and forth. “Gud B’eye!” the spotted warrior called.
“Bài bài,” Li wiggled her fingers and the massive U’knock chuffed. As the hole in the wall sealed, the sounds of the city silenced. Allah looked up to see the bubble shimmer in place.
Li slumped her shoulders, stretched and yawned. “Now that’s over with,” she said tiredly, “you want something to eat?”
“I am honored to share your table again,” Allah nodded a bow of thanks as Li turned toward the spire, “but what ‘other’ duties do I have?”
“Mostly?” Li winked as she glanced over her shoulder, “Staying clear of Ada’key’hamda. And Marn’charlie’weh, for that matter.” The human frowned at the blank expression on Allah’s face. “Don’t get me wrong, I like that old gray ‘māo’,” Jung translated the word as a subspecies of Earth native animals with an image that explained much of Li’s previous jibes, “but I don’t trust her any further than I can throw her. Or Allah’hem’nrah if it comes to it. Not fully.”
“Why not?” Allah turned back to the closed wall gate. The pair had quickly become the most vocal supporters of Li’s side during the quorum. “They seemed to trust you.”
“Allah’hem’nrah does,” Li confessed, “or at least she believes me a ‘defender’ and understands the threat the swarmers pose. Sounds like she was breastfed war stories as a kit,” Li scratched her head, combing her hair with her fingers, “but she’s gonna do what she thinks is best for her people. And that might not be what's best for the U’knock. Or winning this war.”
Allah considered this. She wanted to say an honored elder would not be so dishonest but…Ana’nut’hana’s betrayal of her father…their exile reminded the cub that no matter how unified the U’knock love of Defenders and hate for bullies was supposed to be, a shallow cup could not hold deep water. If her own mayor could do such to her and Fey’arna then what were strangers capable of?
“And Ada’key’hamda?” she asked with interest. They had passed the landing pad and rapidly closed on the doors to the spire.
“That woman?” Li grinned lopsidedly as the double doors whooshed open, “is what my people call a ‘kingmaker’,” she waved away Allah’s questions, “it means she is a pure blood politician; shrewd and devious. She only sided with us because she knew where the winds were blowing.”
“I hope,” Allah confided, stepping into the noisy chaos of the garage, “that you are wrong.” Her voice rose to a shout above the hissing, clanging commotion.
“I hope I’m not!” Li answered as they hurried past the noisy room and into the hallway. Once the noise of work had died to a dull den she explained. “We’re going to need somebody that conniving on our side to keep Marn’charlie’weh in check. Um…at bay.”
“Jung explained chess,” Allah answered the unspoken question. “And go.”
“Gooood!” Li’s smile must have been more predatory than intended, Allah assumed, as the human showed her teeth. “I’ve got a board in my quarters aboard the Stardancer. Fancy a game when he gets back?”
“I would rather know,” Allah nodded at the offer, “why you need two warriors to travel to the villages.”
“Ah,” Li turned at a crossroads in the hallway, then looked up “Demeter, where’s the nearest mess hall?”
The pleasant voice had returned as a blue beam illuminated. “Please follow the indicated footpath!” Li quickly strode onward.
“Is there any food available for carbon based consumption?”
There was no response as Li and Allah followed the glowing blue line. “Demeter, is there any food available for carbon based consumption?”
“Stores are restocked from the garden every fifty years, cooked and freeze dried for long term access! We have a selection of prepackaged meals ready to eat! Just add hot water and--”
“Demeter,” Allah interrupted as they entered a large room filled with long beaches and tables, “Please be quiet.” Then, to Li she said “You are avoiding my question.”
“I wasn’t avoiding,” Li said in a scolding tone, “I was stalling. There’s a difference. Demeter? Where’s the food!?!”
“Li,” Allah’s tone was stern and pleading at the same time, “Why?”
The human stopped in the center of the room, shoulders slumping. “I kinda wished you’d’ve been awake for that part. It didn’t go over too well with the quorum either.”
“Stop stalling,” Allah admonished, “What is wrong?”
“Allah,” Li stood in the center of the room, raised and then lowered her hands. “Allah,“ she said, “I need you to prepare yourself. What happened last night was only the opening salvo. Things are going to get worse. A lot worse before we’re done here.”
“The U’knock are accustomed to hardship,” Allah straightened. “We will persevere.“
Li shook her head. “That’s not what I meant. I know your people are strong. I know they’re proud, and I believe they will fight for their home. But are they willing to leave their lives behind to do it?”
“Leave?” Allah pursed her lips and thought. “Why would we need to leave their lives?“
“We don’t have a full planetary shield around this rock,” Li answered. “The safest place for them is going to be in Umati’clam. They’ll have to relocate. All of the villages will have to relocate.
“And,” from the expression on the human’s face, the news she gave was worse than it sounded when she said “Some of them might not make it.”

2023.03.21 12:29 armnhamm3r DMT: THE MISUNDERSTOOD MOLECULE

Dmt seems to me, misunderstood, but its physical effects on the body and brain are the exact formulation for the building blocks of enlightenment. Its easy to resist. Hard to let go. Also hard to find the path of least resistence When youre looking into the abyss. Dmt is a compound molecule that is a perfect physical manifestation of our emotions and how we deal with them. Its best to just feel the uncomfortable emotions and not resist because once you go through them you will feel so much comfort and growth on the other side. Just like the onset of DMT, it can feel overwhelming, uncomfortable, but the sooner you can accept the feeling and FEEL, LET GO- the sooner you will be on the other side of a warm embrace. With heartbreak comes love, with loss comes life, with dark comes light. living and the universal energies all come down to a perfect balance. Theres no good without bad. No happiness without sadness. No fear without confidence. The sooner you understand its impossible to resist or fight the inevitable uncomfortableness and just release, the more beauty you will be shown. The more i experience this molecule the more i understand and learn, but i also learn how much more complex and abstract it is then any words can explain. Like dipping your pinky into an ocean. And that is the beauty of it. DMT is, i also to believe to be misunderstood because although it can be considered a drug, i find it the best tool to use for meditation practice. It wont blow the hinges off the doors of reality when taken once or even the first few times - a preconcieved notion i once had and many other do. Although dmt does not deserve anything because dmt is an all knowing, non judgemental experience i believe it does show you more, the more understanding and respect you give it. It is like a book of endless knowledge but you need to learn how to read the language first. Its something that is misunderstood because of its potential intense and maybe frightening aspects. Yet it is the opposite of what i would call “dangerous” its actually extremely safe when you take into consideration the fundamentals above. I consider it the perfect tool for the meditative process because it so quickly and effectivley is bringing you into a meditative space. That is not to say though it is autonomic to meditation. Its like a butler to open the door but you have to be ready for whats going to come through the door. Just like in any meditation practice, the rules/guides should be considered for the most desired effect. Let go of the wandering mind. Focus on your breath. Focus on the present moment and everything will become more clear. Set intention but have no expectations and keep in mind, with meditation, you may not find enlightenment in the first practice, but its okay because it takes alot of practice to find enlightenment, with or without the molecule. Its okay to think you arent ready to take the plunge, but dont let fear get in the way. There is nothing to be afraid of. Theres also no limit to when it can and when it cant be used. Not to be abused, but once you do it, you realize its very unwise to abuse and frankly impossible in ways. Our bodies contain dmt endogenously and its really like reconnecting to your inner spirit/soul. When the phone rings answer it. And once you have the number, its okay to call. Thats why it rang in the first place. And with that i will add a quote from the great Terrance Mckenna:
‘Nature loves courage. You make the commitment and nature will respond to that commitment by removing impossible obstacles. Dream the impossible dream and the world will not grind you under, it will lift you up. This is the trick. This is what all these teachers and philosophers who really counted, who really touched the alchemical gold, this is what they understood. This is the shamanic dance in the waterfall. This is how magic is done. By hurling yourself into the abyss and discovering it's a feather bed.’
I wrote this about 30ish min after my last DMT experience about 6 weeks ago. I had done DMT for the first time alone several times, and also gave a nice shelter for newcomers of the molecule for the first time. I have more but am waiting again for the right time to re-immerse. Like when its almost screaming at you to do it lol. Anyway. These are just some thoughts i jotted down after my last experience and also starting to use DMT in a different way (integrating meditation, breathwork, etc. before and after the dose) its seemed to help me become alot more self aware during my experiences. Its been 6 weeks and they told me to come back once i found out the most important part of it all is to integrate those profound experiences into your life, like teachings. Or just even connecting to your intuition. They said theres alot more they will show me next time so its an anxious/exciting feeling and am having patience for the right time. Fucking a i love this molecule. Its saved my life in certain ways i cant explain. Anyways, happy, safe, comfortable and loving journeys to all of ya. I Am more than grateful to have found this molecule and i believe it has powers to open our brains so exponentially fast and i hope more and more understanding of this molecule happens in my lifetime, yet im not one to persuade the masses. I know what its done for me that words cant describe. Cheers 👽✌️

2023.03.21 12:27 HyPerMax222 Cheap, light, preferably small, FR?

Hi y'all, looking for some advice. I used to own an NA mx-5, I loved wrenching on it, ended up building ITBs for it but I had to sell it due to impending homelessness, general uncertainty and some other stuff.
Things have since gotten somewhat back on track and while I've never had anywhere near as much fun on the road as riding my motorcycle, I truly miss wrenching, with bikes the fun is on the road and with cars the wrenching and tweaking is the best part.
I've looked back into some stuff but the market is screwed, a base 924 is now 5k, used to see them all over for sub 2k.
An NA is completely unattainable now because as much as I like them, having owned one, they are not worth anywhere near what people are asking. Can't even find an NB under 2k anymore and the cheapest one I've found for 2k is a drift missile!!!!
Recently the bug bit me again and I dreamt of lightening the B6 crank and grinding the cams plus some other work combined with a speeduino to make a fun little screamer.
If I'm being honest, I don't like anything out there anymore as I just don't think most cars are worth what they're being sold for. But sadly registering a self built car where I live is almost completely impossible due to living in a nanny state.
So I'm just interested in any cheap, light, preferably small FR, the aftermarket or spare part supply doesn't matter since I build a lot of custom parts, ideally it'd be a car that predates emission laws, preferably a carbie I can convert to EFI to get a pat on the back and a tax break from the state.
I understand that anything fitting these criteria is likely to be incredibly expensive nowadays. But I'm at a loss here and just hoping the collective knowledge of this sub can help me along.

2023.03.21 12:05 RagingMite Katana opinion

Katana opinion
Hello guys! Ive played a lot of WH and im really enjoying the game, i came from MHW and MHR. Did almost everything in the game besides leveling all dragon pits.
I main Katana and seccond Nodachi > Staff.
Trying many combinations, but talking about the Katana now, I love the possibility of many viable builds, and the following is true for the 3 weapons i play.
  1. Tried full desperation;
  2. Tried full Verve;
  3. Back to desperation;
  4. Tried something new!
Look at my actual build:

https://preview.redd.it/nd6ita2qq2pa1.png?width=800&format=png&auto=webp&s=0a671664835c5d5725e095777bd8ab258f3aa5dc
I also have stamina on boots instead of Resurrection (really important for Katana/Nodachi)
This build is doing great in my opinion, plus, my defense is not so low as off with Desperation (Still need dodging lerning, need to know the moves that would instakill you), that could get around 50% desperation. I also noticed that One Stroke doesnt work with Nodachi as fine as it works with Katana, when unbound you end up breaking parts more often than i tough it would be.
But let's go with the topic, im not saying its optimized or whatever like this. I would like you guys opinions or even if you guys wanna try it and give feedbacks for improvements and all.
Also, i dont think Katana is weak at all. I usually use 3xboxes to start unbounding and traps only when i need the burst windows, also playing with vaporizer and shield to help me and teammates.
Thanks guys!
To do: I can send you the entire build after worktime, for what im currently using. Im sure i could farm better talismans for One Stroke Fury and Desperation to improve even more.
Funny point: I ve tryied to make a full blade debar + fusion dmg boost for Katana, spamming Celestial Cannons, and even not beying OP, believe me, its really fun!

2023.03.21 11:53 TheCurserHasntMoved Accidentally Adopted Part 4: CH 7 Hammerfall

First Part Start Previous Next

Log: 6000001.0.16, Personal, Captain Yormdrill

The tactic Greggory had proposed Is not a new one, but...
We met the reinforcing squadrons before the local day broke. I could see by the way they strode from their shuttle with weapons in their upper hands and a sidearm in their dominant lower hands that these were fighting men. I can hardly imagine using only two arms to stabilize my rifle, let alone using my free hand to fire a pistol. Gregory simply raised an eyebrow, as if he was wondering how effective the technique could be.
The officers began to introduce themselves, but Greggory interrupted them saying, "I don't intend to embarrass myself getting your names wrong," he pointed to each of them in turn, "I'll call you Red Leader, you Blue Leader, and you Green Leader. Your squads are Red, Blue, and Green squads respectively. You can call me Sneaky and our squad Sneaky squad."
Blue Leader seemed to rankle, "And who are you to give orders?"
"I asked for veterans," Greggory began flatly, "what are you a veteran of?"
"Four boarding actions, repelling."
"I am a veteran of a planetary resistance to the Consumptives, a planetary assault landing, thirty-two combat drops, three boarding actions, and four repelling actions. I have either been in training or combat since I was ten years old. When you ask who I am to give orders, here's the answer: I'm the one man on this planet who could take out every last one of those gangers without them ever seeing me once. I'm the one man on this planet who has taken part in destabilizing a superior enemy force. I am the one man on this planet who knows what the void he's talking about. I'm voiding Sneaky, the one from the memes, and I'm here to teach this part of the galaxy what happens if you touch my family. Fall in, marine, and shut up until you have something less stupid to say."
So calm was his tirade, that it unsettled Blue Leader, who simply shifted his feet while Green Leader asked, "Are you some kind of sniper?" Which Gregory answered by nodding, so he followed up, "With a plasma caster?"
"It wouldn't be my first choice. Low projectile velocity, very obvious when firing, low penetration. I can do the work, though."
"We do not have many snipers outside the anti-pirate fleets, and this force is add-hoc. We could probably get you a magnetic accelerator, though. Our Master at Arms keeps a very well-stocked armory."
"Please, see what you can arrange, but I don't want to wait around for it. Like I said, I can do the work."
Red Leader interjected, "This is well, we also wish to get the work done. It is clear that you have the most relevant experience, yours is the command."
"Wonderful. Okay, what are your squad compositions? What, if any specialists do you have?"
Red Leader began, "My squad is comprised of all former anti-piracy marines. We don't have any planetary experience, but this city is not too different from the stations we've boarded. I can command it either as an assault force, flank support, or fire support unit."
Green Leader followed, "My men have repelled multiple boarding actions, and we don't have experience fighting in such open areas. However, we have a high degree of accuracy, since our ship drills regularly." I felt a little chagrinned at that, as so few of us passed Greggory's test to join his rescue mission due to how lax I was and am with firearms training.
Blue Leader grudgingly followed, "We're mainly a salvage outfit. We have some cutting and demolitions equipment, and the know-how to use it. Otherwise, we've fended off multiple scorched scavenger attacks."
"Did any of you bring sustained fire weapons?"
Blue Leader answered, "One of my small teams has a mining laser that can be used as a crew served weapon."
"Each of my fire teams has a rapid fire magnetic accelerator. On rapid fire, they can sustain a five second stream before reloading the ferrous block," Red Leader said.
"The laser beam lasts around ten seconds."
"My squad has only the carbines," Green Leader said.
"Link to my visor, with our assets, I believe we can convince most of the hostiles to surrender or flee before assaulting the building. Let's get one thing clear now, we do not shoot if they surrender. We do not back the criminals into a corner."
I was crouched beneath a window sill on the third floor of a building overlooking a narrow street. Greggory was right, our limited activities had encouraged bolder patrols, this one was fourty men and a ground vehicle with what looked like a heavily modified industrial cutting laser mounted in the back. They would not have stood a chance against Sneaky Squad. I rose up slowly, and lined up my opening shot on the gunner in the vehicle. Gregory signaled the start by taking the head off of the Tourounti who was very obviously shouting orders. Her abdomen walked her headless torso along for a few more paces before it collapsed in a chitinous heap. I put the gunner out of our misery and idly wondered if the ganger leader was related to a certain defense barrister.
I had not been the only one to choose a target, and the lucky few gangers who had tossed down their weapons were allowed to live. Allowed to see more of us, and carry the same message of how to survive back to their fellows along with the reminder that they can't count on being so lucky twice. Next time they might be the opening target.
I find myself disturbed by just how much carnage the gangers are willing to absorb. We want their leaders, not them. Perhaps they fear their leaders more than us? I feel this will not remain the case.
After the battle, he instructed Red and Green squads to circle around to the opposite side of the ganger headquarters and ambush a ganger patrol that was likely to be in the area, while Blue squad came with us to ambush a larger patrol force. This one perhaps sixty men. They panicked the moment Gregory took the leg off of one of the two team leaders. They fired wildly all about them, screamed curses, prayers, and calls to their mothers or fathers to come save them. The lower accuracy of our teammates lead to a larger number of wounded, and we let the five survivors drag them away. Then, it was time to do it again.
By the fifth ambush, they began to surrender before half of them were either dead or wounded. They were relieved of their weapons, and sent away with the same message, and the reminder that some always die before the surrender.
We were preparing our tenth ambush of a very large force, it looked to be over a hundred, but we saw they had one of their number in bonds, and were carrying their weapons by the barrels, with either the stocks or grips up toward the sky.
I recognized one of the lieutenants.
"Lay down your arms," Greggory announced with the help of some speakers placed for the purpose. They did so, "Now march forward until I say stop. Stop. Place your hands on your heads and kneel. Except the four of you holding that void sucker. Good, now wait there."
Greg ordered Blue squad to cover us, and we came out into the open to receive our prisoner.
"He wants to know why we're doing this," Quindrum translated.
"Because you touched my family. You get to help teach a lesson," Greggory said before whipping the top of his foot into the side of the officer's knee, sending him sprawling to the ground, "and the lesson is to never do that. The rest of you, walk forward slowly. If I see you with weapons, you won't see me. You'll just die."
The massive surrender was a balm to my soul. I had begun to fear that annihilation was the only option.
"Instruct the shuttle that his cell is to have no mattress or blankets. He is to be fed bread and water until time can be made for his judgement," Gregory ordered while the retreating gangers were still in earshot.
It was unfortunate that the other team did not have such an event. Their four ambushes had gone much the same way as our previous ones.

Dear Diary,

Things are starting to look a little better. Mom says that the gangers on the planet have started surrendering instead of fighting, so that's good. On top of that, the Justiciar is here, and will be able to start holding trials tomorrow. She is an impressive ship, The Light of Justice in the Darkness seems to sort of glide through space. It's a bit intimidating to be so close to her, and with a hundred Magistrates and their retinues aboard... I think that instead of finding a penal ship to send someone to, they'll have to commission one and give her a fitting difficult mission.
Yoiv has been going around telling everyone that he knew that Sneaky would rescue him from the very start, so he wasn't afraid at all. I caught him crying in Greg's berth though. If he wasn't afraid before, he is now. The ship's other littles are all convinced that it's all better now, but Yoiv has his own fears. His own worry. My job isn't over.

2023.03.21 11:50 hernamewasbilliejean Pros/cons to registering with union?

I recently started my own construction company which specializes in new home builds, multi-unit development, and light commercial work. Based in Ontario (not GTA). In the current economy its been more work than anticipated securing jobs but that makes sense as interest rates are high, COL is high, and spending across the board is reduced. This part of it is looking up however as I build my brand and my network.
The piece I'm struggling with the most right now is recruiting skilled employees who can add value without constant supervision and always asking for wage increases. I've provided several wage increases to mid-skilled employees out of retention necessity but the requests just keep coming in. I get it, inflation has put us in a tight spot, but the business can't pay more than it's pulling in. I'm in the process of adjusting my bidding approach to account for ever-increasing wages.
Since I started my own, the local carpenter union affiliates have been hounding me to register with them. My thought has always been no way, as you bid yourself out of jobs, have a bunch of added bureaucracies, and enter the strong hold of the union forever. However, I recently looked at the wage sheet, ran some numbers, and starting to think registering with them might solve a lot of problems without too much downside. With my recent talent recruitment struggles and my wages creeping up, I've essentially paying within 5% to 10% of union rates (including fees).
The upside to registering from my perspective is the ability maintain a flexible workforce, pick from a gradient of wages/talents, scale up/down with project demands, and ultimately focus on the process of the build rather than constantly discussing wage and redoing shotty work. Also, if someone isn't working out, you replace them with due process. The big downside is possibly pricing out of work, but I suspect hours will come down as skill goes up resulting in a wash. Also I don't like the idea that once you register you can't go back, but I may be fabricating this as an issue.
Looking for guidance from any owner who has registered with their local carpenter union hall. What was your experience, did you lose on jobs because of higher rates, did your productivity go up with added resources flexibility, are the bureaucracies of the Collective Agreement an issue, and do you feel you ultimately made the right decision?
TIA
TLDR: my new construction company is struggling with reliable talent recruitment and unwarranted wage hike requests. Contemplating registering with union which may solve issues. Looking for guidance plz.

2023.03.21 11:40 DroopyTheSnoop Just finished the game for the first time, this was pretty good

I know I'm late to the party. This was always I game I heard a lot of praise for and was planning to play it, but I kept putting it off until I upgraded my PC. Now I finally got to play it.
It's a pretty good game, though there are some obvious shortcomings. I really liked the combat system. It's the kind I heard a lot about in other games like dark souls. I don't mean it's exactly the same, just that it's the kind where YOU learn how to fight each type of enemy instead of just increasing your stats. There are other similarities too like the save points, getting your exp back from the place you died and backtracking with no quick travel.
I really liked it because I've never played that kind of game, I only know of Dark Souls from reviews. I didn't think I'd like that kind of game. It's possible that this is just a light version of that and that's the reason I like it.
I liked the mix of combat with parkour, if it was all combat all the time I think it would have gotten tedious for me. Not that the parkour segments can't get annoying when you keep failing a jump or something, but it's nice to have variety.
Speaking of variety, I really enjoyed those unique action sequences the sprinkled in: Like driving the AT-AT walker or dropping on the big bird. I think there were some others.
I mean just overall I like the big set pieces, I think they looked really cinematic. There were also moments when big things were happening in the background that looked really nice.
That was a bit in contrast to my first impression of Bogano, where I though the terrain looked kinda blocky and video game-y instead of something that could feel real. I got accustomed to it pretty quickly and I didn't feel it as much on other planets or on Bracca for that matter. Plus I get it, it's trying to be a series of challenging levels rather than being a realistic layout. I actually agree with that design choice. And again I think it mostly blends well with the cinematic beauty.
One other thing I heard about the Souls games that I didn't really like was that the story is kinda in the background. There was world building but not a driving narrative or something like that. I really like the fact that there is a driving narrative in this game. It's only a slight nudge, you can still go explore however you like, but you have a reason to be there and there are nice cutscenes as you progress.
Some things I didn't like so much: The limited customization. The saber hilt parts are great, but the ponchos have very little variation to them. Not only that but the outfit underneath only has color changes and their even more limited than the ponchos. It was a nice challenge to try to put an cohesive outfit together out of the pieces, but personally I found only like 2-3 combinations that really felt like they worked. Like Green outfit with a Green Poncho. But if you tried to go white, there's no white outfit.
I really think there should have been more different outfits with different belts, gloves and doodads. Or possibly there should just be full outfits that are specifically designed by a costume designer to be a cohesive look.
It really looks to me like they had some pressure to release it before they were ready and a lot of stuff they probably wanted in had to be cut. I'm not gonna super fault them for that, because it's a first entry in a series and its got a good framework to build upon in the sequels. Hopefully this goes the way good games usually do and the next one is gonna be bigger and better and then the next one after that even more so.
One other small thing I wanted to harp on was the writing. For the most part I think the characters are done really well, they have nice backstories and I really enjoy the banther. I do think at times it's a little simplistic possibly because it's rushed. I felt like some characters were really quick to change their minds after a brief talk with Cal. It's especially noticeable with Trilla at the very end. Years of hatred and resentment just get "fixed" by Cal basically saying "I know how you feel". I wish they would have drawn that out a bit more, if not sowing the seeds in previous encounters, at least dragging the scene on for a bit longer and having it be a back and forth where we see Trilla wrestle with the conflicts in her and slowly giving in. Maybe spurred on by some action that Cal does rather than just his words.
I also got the feeling that Cal just turned into a kind of generic good guy who speaks in platitudes, after he overcame his past trauma. I like the character arc, but I feel like they went a bit too much in the relentless optimist direction towards the end.
These are minor nitpicks in the grand scheme of things though. As I said, overall I found it really enjoyable and a solid foundation for future games. So while it's not a 10/10 for me, I still find it to be a solid game that I have no problem recommending.
Thanks for reading! If you have any additional opinions or want to argue about mine, I'd be happy to read them.

Glazing refers to the transparent material used in windows, doors, and other building openings. Understanding the optical and solar properties of glazing is crucial for designing energy-efficient buildings that provide thermal comfort, daylighting, and renewable energy.Optical properties such as visible light transmittance, shading coefficient, and spectrally selective coatings can affect the amount of natural light that enters a building, as well as the level of glare and color distortion. Solar properties such as solar heat gain coefficient, low-emissivity coatings, and insulation can affect the amount of solar radiation that enters a building, as well as the amount of heat that is retained or lost.

2023.03.21 11:20 Silent_Term1584 Loft boarding with weird sized rafters

I want to board my loft for use as light storage but I'm not sure if the rafters are strong enough. It's a fairly new build house, approx 10 years old and I want to board half of the middle section of the loft.
The rafters are approx 80mm high x 34mm wide and they span a 2.3m gap. I haven't found any noggins so far under the insulation.
This is a diagram showing what I want to do: https://i.imgur.com/1I4IQQS.png The red area is the part I want to board.
Everything I read so far has suggested that these rafters are too small for the gap!

2023.03.21 11:07 Edward-Oakley The other two chapters of my submission

Chapter Three: Too Big to Fail?
Amelia and Noele raced towards Dunwich at breakneck speeds and arrived only minutes after their departure from Longbarrow.
Amelia put down Noele, who looked a little green in her face. At least she hadn’t started to scream. Some adventures did that, even A-ranks. Especially A-ranks.
As they walked through the gate a man in the coat of arms of Dunwich stepped forth, seemingly a city guard. Instead of a sword he carried a clipboard.
“Halt. For entreance you first need to pay headtax. Three copper per person.”
Amelia fished her adventurers badge out of her pocket and showed it the guardsman. “No we don’t. We are members of the adventurers guild:”
The guard shook his head. “Yeah, new law from city hall. Adventurers are no longer exempt from head tax. In fact, have you fought any monsters in the wilds?”
Noele glanced at Amelia. “I think you might have clipped a griffin on the way here.”
The guard nodded and scribbeled something down on his clipboard. “That means we have to add a small tax for that. All ressources around the city, including monsters, belong to the city after all.”
“But we didn’t even kill it.”, exclaimed Noele.
“Ah. That adds a charge animal cruelty. There is a fine for that.” The guard added another note to his clipboard. “Also, did you happen to travel on the road?”
Amelia thought about that for a moment. She had mostly stuck to low jumps just over the foliage, but they had landed on the street occassionally.
“Yeah, briefly.”
“Ah, bad news then. That road is privatly owned now, so that adds a small
toll.”
Amelia rolled her eyes at this insanity. “All of these taxes and fines, are these recent additions? Proposed by some oversized lizard in a suit?”
“You mean Mr. Goldentooth? Yes, that oversized lizard has spearheaded a great deal of reforms. Has even taken office in the city hall. By the way, lizard-calling is a serious misdemeanor. There is a fine for that.”
“But you just called him a lizard too?
“Have I?”, asked the guard.
“Alright, how about you let us through and I won’t tell anybody.”
The guard gave Amelia a stern look.”Are you attempting to blackmail a member of the city watch?”
“If that is was it takes for you to let us through that blasted gate, then yes.”, Amelia said flatly.
The watchman frowned at her. “There is a fine for that. Five silver.”
Amelia sighed. “All of this is ridiculous.”
“You see, Miss. I am just doing my job here. If you have problems with the city’s tax or law code, then you have to file a complaint at the city hall and not annoy overworked guards.”
Amelia gave the guard a flat look. “And how do we logde a complaint at your city hall, when you don’t let us in?
The guard blinked “Hm. I guess I see your point.”
“So you let us in? We just want to logde a complaint.”
“But you haven’t paid your headtax, your adventuring tax, the street toll and the fines for animal cruelty and lizard-calling . I can’t let you through this gate like this.”
Noele grasped her coinpurse in resignation: “How much is it in total then?”
“Altogether that would be 16 gold and 3 silver coins. Per person, of course. Though I would advice to make it an even 20 gold pieces by purchasing the premium city pass. That’s a real bargain by the way, and would allow you to skip the wait time and fast track the organisational stuff.”
Amelia wasn’t from this world and had already amassed a small fortune. The bounty for the Miststorm riders alone would pay the fees and fines for both of them more than 50 times over. Still she balked at the price. This was her retirement fund after all. She also wouldn’t force her student to pay for her. That would be unbecoming of her, as she was Noele’s mentor.
She gave the golden-eyed fool one last glance. For just a moment she thought about giving him the Leander-treatment and literally bash some sense in that guys head. Instead she did the mature and adult thing and picked Noele by her belt. Noele groaned. She knew what would happen. Amelia flexed her calves and handily leaped over the 20 meter wall.
The guard blinked in surprise for a moment. Then he yelled: “You are in breach of the airborne transportation act! THERE. IS. A. FINE. FOR. THAT!”
Business was doing good. No, even better. Business was doing great. Gildroy gazed fondly at the enormous crates and chests, all filled with beautifully shining gold.
There was a sudden crashing sound, like wood breaking. Gildroy instantly stood up. Had one of the unpaid interns dropped a chest with money again?
He sprinted from the vault into the main room. There he saw Amelia and Noele, standing atop the splintered door.
“Ahem. Hello. The door was mahagony. Kinda pricy to replace. Please use the doornob the next time.”, he scolded
Amelia had an angry scowl on her face. “You owe me two silver and a new window.
Oh. Gildroy had already forgotten about that. Two pieces of silver.
“Oh. I forgot. My bad.”, said Gildroy. He drew his purse and pulled out a few coins. “Here you go:”
Amelia pocketed the money. “Also you are going to stop this insanity you have going on here. Give everyone their money back and I’ll let you live:”
Gildroy blinked in surprise. “You can’t be sirious, right?”
Amelia put a hand on her sword. “I am.”
Gildroy shook his head.”Never.”
Amelia smiled. “I had hoped for that. I wanted to punch you inyour lizard-visage since I met you.”
Gildroy scowled, What a barbarian.
Noele put a hand on her master’s shoulder. “Please let me have this fight. You told me, that only by challenging myself further I can grow truly strong.”
Amelia rolled her eyes. “Alright. He’s yours. Maybe this fight pushes you to S-rank.”
Gildroy shook his head. Such gall, but Norah had been much the same.
“Well, I did promise a spar.”, he said, as he armed himself with a purse filled with platinum coins.
[Nobleflame Armor]”
Golden flames coated Norah, forming into a brestplate. Very fashionable, but gold was always fashinable.
Gildroy countered with his own armor skill[ Armor of Gold] . As if carried by invible hands coins floated from the vault towards the drakling, on whom they arranged themselves like a secondary set of scales.
“Go on, you have the first strike”, he said as he picked a platinum coin from his purse.
And strike she did. Noele teleported behind him and swung her sword at him.
[Elegant Noble Slash] and [Unending Dauntless Fury]” she yelled, as she descendet into a flurry of blows.
Gildroy flicked a platinum coin. It disappeard and time slowed down to a crawl. He walked out of her attack, then the flow of time resumed.
Noele stared at the empty spot she hit repeatedly. “How? She muttered.”
“Would you kindly hurry up with your attack?”, asked Gildroy a little giddy. These fights were always fun! “[Time is Money], after all.”
[Unending Dauntless Fury] “
[Time is Money]
Noele hit nothing again.
“Noele, he can’t attack while he stops time.”, Amelia told her student.
“Besides, it is more of a potent time-slow. A hard hitting area-of-effect attack will still hit”.
Gildroy scowled at her. “Hey, the best part of any fight is to figure out how the enemie’s skills work. How will she learn anything if you take that away from her.”
Noele tried to go for a cheap shot while he talked. A quick flick of a coin brought Gildroy to safety.
“Well, now it is time for me to strike back, it would seem.”
Gildroy barreled into her. Noele stood her ground, defending with her sword. “[Titans’s Strength]”, she yelled.
Gildroy pushed back with his own strength skill. “[Gold is Strength]”, he barked. For a moment they seemed equally matched, claw against sword, but then Gildroy gained the upper hand. An A-ranked skill just couldn’t compete with an S-ranked skill.
Noele was launched through the air and impacted the wall. Gildroy flicked another platinum and time slowed for him. He dashed towards her and delivered a crushing blow just as the time-slow ended. Noele was thrown back again, this time through the wall and into the main plaza of Dunwich.
Noele quickly found back to er feet. “Big area-of-effect spells, huh? For that I have something. [Golrious Noble Slash]
All of a sudden her sword increased in size manyfold, and she swung it a Gildroy with ferocity.
Gildroy knew, he could not dodge this one with his time-slow, but tried anyways. His golden armor cracked under the barrage of blows and he flew back, towards a crowd of people.
Amelia moved with extreme speed and dragged multiple peole out of the line of fire. Luckily, because far too many people here had purchase [Life Insurance] from him. Should they come to harm…. he’d be ruined.
Oh dear. If he took another hit like that he’d lose his status as an hexillionaire.
Gildroy felt his control over his customers slipping. Quickly he summond up a bit of [Investor]-Widom to once again tighten his grip: ”People, the market has just taken a hit. That is normal. That just happens. Your savings are not in danger, in fact with the stocks low right now is the best time to invest.”
“That skill surely is something. Good, almost S-rank”, Gildroy praised.
“It would be a same if some one would steal it: [Buyout]: Purchase the skill Elegant Noble Slash.” The drakling burned hundreds of platinum coins activating that skill.
A system message apperared in front of Noele’s eyes
[Gildroy Goldentooth has acquired the skill Noble Slash]
Noele’s jaw went slack. Her sword of light and flames disappeared and reappeared in Gildroys hands.
“Beautiful skill”, Gildroy said with a shit-eating grin. “And just my color.”
And with that he started to whail on Noele. She tried to dodge his clumsy swings, but at some point one hit. Her armor of flames buckled under the blows, but still held strong.
“What can I still do?”, Noele screamed in panic. “I don’t have my skill anymore. I can’t do this?”
Amelia snorted. “You lost one skill. You still have the rest. Change them. Combine them. Make them better. Make them yours.”
“Make them mine”; Noele whipered. She close her eyes. “Make them better like with my elegant noble slash.”
When she opened her eyes again, Gildroy saw that ther gaze no longer contained fear, only cold determination.
Gildroy noted how her stance and entire aura shifted.
And Noele unleashed her newest skill
[Unending Dauntless Grand Blaze]”, Noele screamed.
She launched a great fireball and then dozens more.
The first fireball Gildroy batted away with his sword of golden light.
The second fireball he doged.
The third fireball hit Gildroy but was blocked by his armor.
The seventh fireball broke his [Armor of Gold]
And Gildroy screamed like a feral animal.
And the barrage continued for minutes.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Gildroy was of course unhurt by the spell. Burning a dragon? About as sound a strategy as drowning a fish or killing a bird by tossing it down a mountain.
No, what hurt him was the collateral damage! Noele had hit not only him but also multiple buildings with her fireballs, absolutely demolishing them. Buildings he owned! Luckily her teacher had stepped in and carried the people still inside them to safety. But still…. so much money lost.
In his fury he roared. Using the smoke as cover he dashed toward Noele, who was obviously exhausted. She failed to even use her fancy teleportation spell, as Gildroy grabbed her by the neck. He then slammed her headfirst into the pavement. Once, twice. Then he tossed her away, through one of still standing walls.
Gildroy glanced on the burned ruin in front of him. He took a deep breath. This wasn’t as bad as it looked, he knew that. The tenants had been tardy on their morgage-payments anyhow.
He’d just demand the full repayment of the damages from the tenants and then he would also cash in the insurance. Then he would use that money to rebuild. He would gentrify the entire block and then he’d demand double, no triple the original price.
He saw how Noele fought to stand back up. She even picked a potion out from her pocket and downed it. Foolish. The fight was over, and even a little bit of replenished magic wouldn’t change anything.
“Girl, stop it. You did well, very well, but you lost.”
Instead of listening to Gildroy’s words, the girl went for one last, all out attack. Silly. Gildroy pulled out another platinum coin from his pouch, at least tried to.
Gildroy glanced downward. While he hadn’t been wounded by the barrage of fireballs, it had ripped the pouch of coins from his belt. And without platinum coins there was no time slow. No protection.
He felt a deep, stinging pain. He tasted iron on his gums.
The blade was lodged deeply into his chest, piercing his heart and his lungs.
“Oh.”, Gildroy weezed.
“Well done”, he said with his last bit of air.
Noele ripped the sword out of his body and Gildroy fell over.
And in these last few moments of his life Gildroy heard something.
The call of an ancient god of death. Of decay. Of oblivion.
He heard the call of the void.
Gildroy opened his eyes and saw a broken world. Enormous rocks flew about, one such he was standing on. Stars glittered in the far darkness of this terrible place.
A towering mass of dark purple flesh with hundred of tentacles sprawled over several such floating isles. The enormous body was mostly covered in shadows, yet the few glances were enough to cause Gildroy a massive headache and burnt themselves into his memories and left a marks that would last for the rest of his existance.
He tried not to look at the massive creature, but that was difficult as it so big, that it was both to the front, the left and the right of Gildroy.
“Your mortal flesh is failing you.”, the eldritch beast rumbled from a thousand mouths. “Swear yourself to my cause and you will be saved! You will be granted unlimited power, an...”
“No thanks”
Hundreds of eyes blinked in surprise.
“You are aware, that you are dying?”
Gildroy took a look a look of his blood- and sootstained suit. The shirt had been his last and had been made from the silk of a king tarantula. Very pricey and very difficult to clean. Probably ruined for good. Oh well, sometimes you incur unforseen losses.
“I want you to know two very basic things about me, my dear: First of all, my soul is not for sale. At least not for a vague promise of unlimited power. No, if I were to put a price on my soul, it would be hard cash only.”
“Secondly” Gildroy’s lips drew back into a manic smile. “I always plan ahead. Far ahead.”
His grin bloomed into a full on mad laugh.
“My death was always part of the plan.”
Noele stood victorous. She had beaten an S-ranked threat, alone and almost witthout any help from her master. Did that mean she was an S-rank adventurer now?
Then [Dance with Death] stopped it’s effect, recognizing that her fight was over. Tiredness slammed into her body like the mallet of a yeti. She fell to her knees, then flat to the ground.
She used the lat bit of her strength and raised her head and looked at Amelia. Goodness, she was tired. She expected a proud nod, or even a few kind words from her master. Yet Amelia’s gaze was hard, and her body tense, as she looked at the cooling corpse of Gildroy. Slowly her mentor drew her sword.
Then Noele heard a sound. The sound of metal against cobblestone. Then another plink.
Then another.
And another.
And another.
Noele saw how a gold coin fell down from somewhere up in the sky. And then a silver coin, and some platinum after that. Then Noele saw a message from the world system.
[Gildroy Goldentooth used the skill: Life Insurance]
The rain of coins picked up, gold coins falling in an endless cascade from the skies. A small hill was already forming around the body.
Ameila took a single step, crossing the entire distance to her pupil and lifted her up. Another leap took them to the roof of one of the undamaged buildings, where she laid down Noele.
Meanwhile the entrance to the city hall was entombed by an avalance of silver, the fires in the burning ruins were buried in gold, drowning the fires.
On top of this mountain of treasures now stood a figure wreathed in golden scales and golden wings, his eyes burning with the blue flame of undeath.
“You fools!”, Gildroy roard. “Do you think I didn’t buy shares in that liches phylactery?”
Noele eyes burned and not only from the smoke lingering in the area. So she had failed… not only herself but also her sister.
“Master, shouldn’t you stop him? Please, I am too weak.” Noele hated how feeble and pathetic her voice sounded.
“Not yet. The rain hasn’t stopped yet, and that lizard did a lot of damage,”, Amelia said while crouching down next to her. “You did well, though this opponent is frankly above you.”
With that she one again leaped and landed in front of the ecstatic drakling.
“Ha! You cannot face me! Nobody can! I am the richest dragon to ever walk Vacuos!”, Gildroy bellowed. “[Buyout]”, he barked. “System: Kill Amelia.
Nothing happened. Gildroy looked at the System Message in front of him and his eyes bulged.
“How much does that cost me? That many zeros?”
“Alright.”, Gildroy exclaimed. “System: Stun Amelia:
Once again nothing happened, aside from a new message appearing.
“Still that much. Oh dear.” Gildroy suddenly sobered up.
“You are quite strong, aren’t you?”, he feebly asked.
“Yeah. Kinda.” Amelia glanced up. The golden rain slowly let up. There must be tens of millions of coins laying about.
“Well. I seem to have micalculated. Is it too late to apologize? Forgive and forget?”
One last platinum coin fell from the sky and skidded over a mountain of gold.
“Too late.”, Amelia said, and her blade descended.
---------------------------------------------
There we are. 10 minutes before the deadline. Not even close.
Now time for a nap. Running on caffeine and 2 hourse of sleep. Who could have known that writing takes time and effort.
Oh, also a little prologe. Noele fell down the roog, knocked her head really bad. Forgot her new skill combo. Such a klutz.

2023.03.21 11:06 mtranda Bottle dynamo fastening systems

Hello, everyone. I've recently finished building a vintage city bike for my partner and realised I need to put some lights on it. Now, for the sake of aesthetics, I've realised that dynamo lights would be a better choice. However, I'd rather go truly old school and use a bottle dynamo (modern ones go for 10€ or so) rather than rebuild the wheel and have to buy a dynamo hub.
And herein lies the problem: although the frame set's an 80's Mixte Peugeot, it does not come with any mounting bracket.
Are there any bracket alternatives I could use, short of making a trip to the hardware store and building my own?
Yes, I know a dynamo hub is a much better option, and if this were a bike that would get a different kind of use, it would have been my first option.
So has anyone else had this issue before? How did you solve it.
Thanks.

Semiconductor Stocks are on the move.....Industry group chart as of 3/17 at bottom of post
Semiconductor Stocks are on the move.....actually they have been on the move for some time and are now at the top....but for how long? The Fabless industry group has quickly ascended to the #2 of 197 industry groups as seen on the industry ranking chart at bottom of this post. I posted this for one of our members on his Discord channel because he had expressed interest in shorting certain stocks in the group a month or two ago....I suggested he reconsider for the group was making a strong move up. Now that they are at the top....shorting would be a lot less risky. But I prefer (and have to use in retirement accounts) to use Bear ETFs for betting against stocks or groups of stocks and SOXS fits that bill for me. I am not buying yet but may start adding small lots ($18+ / share with a 52-week high of $89.50) while we watch and see how well NVidia & AMD and others continue performing. And don't get me wrong....there are some semiconductor stocks that I will remain long in and continue reducing cost basis on - Mobileye is one of those. Here is a thorough assessment on these stocks for your review:
Semiconductor Stocks Climb Yet Inventories Bedevil Chip Industry; A Reality Check May Be Coming
FacebookTwitterLinkedInShare Licensing
PATRICK SEITZ03:32 PM ET 03/15/2023
Semiconductor stocks were a godsend to investors in February as the overall market backed off from January's advance. After a strong first month of the year, chipmakers scored more gains. That was especially true for the fabless semiconductor industry, which rose another 6.3% on strength in stocks like Nvidia (NVDA), Monolithic Power Systems (MPWR) and Advanced Micro Devices (AMD).

Yet during that same period, as chipmakers reported December-quarter earnings, a raft of data on shipments, prices and inventories showed the semiconductor industry still in a downturn.

Cyclical investors, those practiced at speculating on semiconductor stocks' reversal from their deep, periodic downturns, were betting on a bottom.

Old Industry Cycle, New Twist
But this cycle from the start has been unlike others in a long history of semiconductor industry booms and busts. The cycle made its way through the pandemic years of distorted demand trends and knotted supply chains. Then, as cyclical investors moved into many top stocks, leading them to flash early signs of an upturn, another factor also came into play. Another sort of optimism, fueled by views that increasingly diverse end markets signaled a more durable, stable chip industry, also helped bolster the upturn.

Among fabless chip stocks, Nvidia surged more than 58% for the year through February. Monolithic Power rallied 37%. Among chip manufacturers, ON Semiconductor (ON), more commonly known as Onsemi, and STMicroelectronics (STM) surged 24% and 50%, respectively.

Some semiconductor stocks continue to climb. Still, an array of fundamental chip industry metrics point to difficulties ahead. In particular, many semiconductor companies report stubbornly high inventories in their sales channels and with customers. A large segment of analysts accustomed to assessing chip cycles say investors who put the bottom in semiconductor stocks at the end of 2022 might be prematurely optimistic.

"If you listen to all the (earnings) calls, no one has said that this is the bottom or that it's definitely going to get better soon," Robert Maire, an analyst with consulting firm Semiconductor Advisors, told IBD.

Pandemic Disrupted Semiconductor Industry Cycle
One thing is certainly true: The semiconductor industry's end markets are more diverse now than during past chip cycles. The determining factor in prior booms and busts was personal computer and smartphone sales. Now computer chips have made their way into many more devices. This lessens the industry's dependence on any one major product type.

The present chip cycle shows memory chips, PC processors and chips for smartphones and consumer electronics clearly in a downturn. At the same time, chip sales in automotive and industrial markets have remained strong.

But overall, the wild swings in demand for tech products during the Covid-19 pandemic have led to a steeper-than-usual down cycle, Semiconductor Advisors' Maire says.

"The industry got whipsawed by Covid and the supply chain issues," Maire said. "We went from a shortage to an excess in a pretty short span of time."

Semiconductor Stocks: Industry Recovery In Late 2023?
A clear risk factor for rising chip stocks is that the semiconductor industry still must reconcile its bloated inventories, Jefferies analyst Christopher Wood said in a recent note to clients. He warned of a "coming chip glut."

"The market action is assuming, heroically, a bottoming out of the semiconductor inventory correction in the first half of this year and a presumed recovery in demand in the second half, of which there is for now no evidence," Wood said.

Wall Street analysts generally expect sales in the broader chip market to turn positive in the second half of 2023. Many see PC chip sales as among the first segments that will turn around. That should help chipmakers AMD and its archrival Intel (INTC).

It is also possible, however, that the "orgy" of pandemic buying of PCs in 2020 and 2021 could also depress demand for three to four years, Wood says. Smartphone sales face a similar possibility, he says.

"Meanwhile, chips used in the auto sector are now seeing a big surge in inventory," Wood said. "The previous shortage of automotive chips has led to substantial double ordering."

Analysts see AMD sales and earnings falling through the first two quarters, then turning higher, according to FactSet. Intel is expected to shift from loss to profit in Q3 and post an earnings gain as sales edge higher in Q4.

World Semiconductor Trade Statistics forecasts a 4.1% decline in semiconductor sales in all of 2023. Sales rose 4.4% in 2022 and surged 26.2% in 2021.

Artificial Intelligence Spurs Semiconductor Industry Investments
Among the markets for more advanced chips, the data center market, tied to web services and cloud computing providers, is showing some signs of weakness. One clear exception is the portion of that market tied to artificial intelligence, especially graphics processors.

Excitement around generative AI applications, such as ChatGPT, has provided a lift for certain semiconductor stocks seen as beneficiaries of the trend.

Nvidia leads that group with its graphics processing units, accelerators, high-performance computing hardware and software. Other chip stocks likely to benefit include Broadcom (AVGO) for its application-specific integrated circuits and Marvell Technology (MRVL) for its high-speed networking and ASIC chips.

As a result, Broadcom earnings and sales have powered ahead, paying little mind to the pandemic's potholes. For Marvell, analysts see sales and earnings declines for the first three quarters this year, turning to narrow gains in the fourth quarter.

"There is a clear shift in spending priorities (by cloud service providers) to AI and technical infrastructure," Jefferies analyst Mark Lipacis said in a recent note to clients. "We view Nvidia as the biggest beneficiary of the shift in spend to AI, and Broadcom and Marvell as beneficiaries in networking upgrades and semi-custom chips."

Downturn In Memory Chips
Like the prior chip cycle downturn, which lasted from late 2018 until early 2020, memory-chip makers have led the current correction. Micron Technology (MU) and other memory-chip makers started warning about weakness in the market in mid-2022.

The big wrinkle with this cycle in semiconductor stocks is the disruption caused by the Covid pandemic. As the pandemic got underway in early 2020, work-from-home and remote education trends fueled a buying binge in PCs and tablets. Consumers also splurged on consumer electronics and home appliances as they sheltered in place.

Then pandemic fears faded and the economy reopened. Consumers shifted their spending away from electronics. Analysts now project Micron will book losses in all four quarters of this fiscal year, dropping for the year to an estimated $2.20 loss per share, vs. an $8.35 profit for 2022.

Sales are forecast to turn up in the quarter ending in September, with the company shifting from loss to profit in the December-ending quarter.

Automakers Still Dealing With Chip Shortages
Automakers faced a severe shortage of chips during the pandemic. It was the result of a two-step process: first, they canceled orders ahead of a projected falloff in demand for new cars and trucks. But demand held steady. When carmakers went to place new orders, they found themselves at the back of the line at chip foundries. Only recently have the auto chip shortages started to ease.

In general, automakers use older chip technology. The semiconductor industry's production capacity for those chips is more limited than for higher-margin, leading-edge chips, such as those made by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing (TSM).

Semiconductor companies serving the auto market include Onsemi and STMicroelectronics, as well as NXP Semiconductors (NXPI) and Texas Instruments (TXN).

But across all of those segments of the chip landscape, unpredictable consumer behavior and knotted supply chains altered the traditional chip-cycle metrics.

"Covid threw a wrench into the cycle," Bill Jewell, a consultant with Semiconductor Intelligence, told IBD.

Factories shut down at the start of the pandemic and then reopened to chase a rapid acceleration in demand for PCs and other devices. Then consumers, after they had what they needed, stopped buying, Jewell says.

"PCs and smartphones account for so much of semiconductor consumption, especially memory, that when those slow down, it has a big impact on the market," Jewell said. "Automotive and industrial markets are holding up but they are not as big as the personal computer and smartphone markets."

For this year, analysts see STMicroelectronics earnings rising in Q1 and Q2 before undercutting year-ago levels. Sales and earnings forecasts for Onsemi, NXP and Texas Instruments are lower throughout the year.

Semiconductor Stocks Vs. 'Trough-Calling Euphoria'
Deutsche Bank analyst Ross Seymore sees the semiconductor industry situation as a hangover from pandemic disruptions.

"After about two years of semiconductor shortages resulting in a revenue/margin 'party' for the sector, the sector's fundamentals have pivoted to the 'hangover' stage," Seymore said in a recent note to clients. The hangover is illustrated by chipmakers lowering their revenue and earnings estimates for the past two quarters in the face of record-high inventories, he said.

Chip Stocks To Watch And Semiconductor Industry News

Investors observing the recent weak earnings reports now anticipate a trough in the first half of 2023 and a fundamental recovery in the second half of the year, Seymore said. That optimism reflects in this year's rise of the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index, or SOX.

Year to date, the SOX is up 15.5% vs. a 1.6% rise for the S&P 500. The SOX includes the 30 largest chip stocks traded in the U.S.

"While we've seen this cyclical investing 'playbook' used successfully many times in the past, we also note that the timing and slope of the eventual recovery quickly becomes paramount once the trough-calling euphoria subsides," Seymore said.

He added, "We remain somewhat concerned that the magnitude of inventory builds coupled with still mediocre demand may limit the slope of the revenue, margin and EPS (earnings per share) recovery — even if first-half 2023 is indeed the bottom."

Chip Inventories Hit Record Highs
Aggregate inventory data across 26 of the largest semiconductor companies shows that inventories in the fourth quarter reached their highest levels since Deutsche Bank began collecting such data in 1994, Seymore said.

"The industry has finally entered the hangover stage, with the primary concerns going forward focused on the duration/magnitude of the headache, and equally importantly the timing/slope of the eventual recovery," Seymore said.

With such a cautious outlook, Seymore is focused on semiconductor stocks with reasonable valuations and company-specific catalysts. His favorite names include Broadcom, Marvell, MaxLinear (MXL), NXP Semi, Onsemi and Qualcomm (QCOM).

Auto Chip Stocks Remain Strong Segment
Meanwhile, demand for automotive chips should continue to hold up in 2023, buoying companies like Allegro MicroSystems (ALGM) and NXP, Wells Fargo analyst Gary Mobley said in a recent note to clients.

Production constraints caused by chip shortages hindered automobile sales for more than two years. And there remains a pent-up demand for new vehicles, Mobley said.

Plus, automotive-chip makers are benefiting from increased semiconductor content in each vehicle. That is thanks to the trends of electrification and autonomy, he said.

"As long as light vehicle unit production continues to improve toward normalized levels, higher (chip) inventories are needed," Mobley said.

FactSet consensus estimates show earnings gains for Allegro over the next thee quarters before slowing. Sales gains are forecast for the next five quarters.

'Soft Landing' For Semiconductor Stocks?
Most analysts are predicting a rolling recovery with some segments turning positive earlier than others.

Evercore ISI analyst C.J. Muse has forecast a "soft landing" for chip stocks and the semiconductor industry rather than a harsh downturn. Also, the reopening of the China economy should help with the recovery, he said in a note to clients.

Daniel Morgan, senior portfolio manager at Synovus Trust, underscored that the health of the semiconductor industry is a key barometer for the overall tech sector.

"The semiconductor sector is the plankton of the technology and manufacturing ocean," Morgan said in a recent note to clients. "Everything requires chips in it to run. Typically, the chip sector will lead the technology sector out of the valley and will be one of the first sectors to show green sprouts foreshadowing a pending recovery."

But Morgan added, "At this point there are few signs of a rebound."

And the upshot for investors in semiconductor stocks? The downtrend in the chip cycle started in the third quarter of 2022. It could persist for six quarters, similar to the 2018-2019 downturn, Morgan said.

2023.03.21 11:02 iridael The Ordeal Ch4:Salvage

First Previous [Next]()
Issac watched as the single refinery in sector had raw iron dumped into the cauldron, the induction coils around it heating up red hot as the metal inside the container bubbled and smoked away impurities. The coils dulled down automatically a minute later and the cauldron rotated, pouring molten iron into the facility where it would be poured into ingots for storage, moulds for hull plating and hundreds of other standard fabrication designs that the station might need.
The cargo ship was in its berth, the only one section one had so once the mining ship was done it would have to leave the berth for the docking ship to enter, undergo maintenance and then be moved into storage. Right next to the second cargo ship they’d moved here as well.
Without it in the berth, maintenance and prep had taken and extra day for Bradley to give the all clear. Miles and his security had put a team together and had a container with their equipment. A team of 10 was the limit. Both Issac and Miles wanted more, a team of 25 was preferable, but with the incident one of the things that was hit hard were the vacuum suits. And the security team only had 10 sets intact.
It was just another thing added to the list they needed from the JA cruiser.
His eyes drifted up from the smelter and docks, refocusing onto the titanium glass dome that was covered in a lattice of cracks but had done its job of keeping the atmosphere mostly in and drifted further until it reached the massive gate doors and the mechanism that let them open and close.
The jagged line that had cut through the door had transformed into a pixelated slice, large chunks of metal cut free and gently drifting on cables towards massive maintenance hatches for recycling…and beyond that in the dark was a light that was slightly brighter than the others. Orbiting that slightly brighter light was a ship and on that ship was what he needed to keep this station alive a little longer.
He looked down past the glass past the foundry until his eyes hit the bridge floor, his feet and then focussed on the cup in his hand.
“You’re feeling it aren't you?”
He jumps but doesn't. It's a strange thing he feels the response but then some part of him goes and stops it.
Turning around he sees Clarrissa standing at the door to the bridge. “I checked on the others too, the surviving officers. Told them I had to take the operation because of a tumour. Extended my contract by 15 years for it. Means I got to tell them what to expect. Got them to show me their medical scans, most of them anyway.”
“Expect what?” Issac asks.
“The things they don't tell you when you sign the contract. Your brain is now surplus to requirements, it's been superseded by the neural matrix in your skull. And parts of it are already dying off. The suppressants and drug cocktails giving your body the micro dosages of special elements your implant needs to keep growing, winding its way through your brain. Taking over comparatively sluggish organic processes.”
“Why.”
Clare shrugs. “The problem with evolution is it chooses what works best at the time, not what's efficient. The big wigs wanted a template for a better brain to build a better human around, and once they had that they realised that certain things were a bit surplus to requirements.”
“Such as?”
“Your occipital lobe is the first to go. It had a big lump of crystal and exotic elements shoved into it after all. Means that your vision will change. You’ll gain peripheral acuity, you’ll notice the blind spot of your eye until it disappears in a month or two. Your Parietal lobe, The bit above and in front of your vision centre goes strange next. Its basically working like a backup now. So it’ll simplify, shrink a bit. But that does mean multitasking becomes easier, things like maths and spacial awareness get better. But it also handles pain. So that’ll change.”
“How?” Issac asks, interrupting her with a raised hand. In response she pulls out a long needle and calmly pulls up her sleeve and removes a bandage to reveal where a dozen small wounds are and calmly shoves it through the muscle of her forearm.
“Pain is a message informing you of damage.” she says pulling the needle out. “the reaction ‘ow that hurts!’” she says expressing pain and clamping her hand over the new and bleeding hole. A moment later her expression levels out. And she calmly takes her hand away and starts redressing the area. “It becomes a choice. Your digital mind registers it and then you get the choice to react, or file it away for later.”
“And the frontal cortex?”
“Well, that's the part you need to really watch for. It is furthest from the implants initial location but also the one it messes with the most, because by then it's almost fully integrated. It’ll assault the area, things stop being as entertaining, as funny, some drugs loose effect, others get a lot stronger. Emotions level out…at least it did for me…others in the program I was part of”
“Other snakes.” Issac says.
“Yes…most of them stopped being able to empathise properly. They stopped thinking of the corp as a family and more like a machine. And themselves as the administrators. Answerable only to the board. They forgot that people need a reason beyond the job to work and would look for any reason to make the machine more efficient.”
“And you didn't?” Issac asks.
“I could have. It's so easy to let logic take over. But I'm a botanist. And you can't grow and care for plants without caring. But that's not the part I'm warning you of. A few of my colleagues went further. They started to crave the feelings they used to have but it takes more to get the same result. Relationships become funnels for satisfying urges. Sex becomes rape, light drug use becomes hardcore drug abuse. The thrill of a fight becomes the love of inflicting pain.”
“And every officer is now cyberized and walking down that path.”
“Which is why I'm being mostly honest with you and saying that IF I need to do my job. I will, without mercy.”
“Am I supposed to thank you for that?” Issac asks.
“Yes. Because if you could see the thing you’d become you would be horrified. But now you know what the corp doesn't want you to know. You and the other officers can be on guard to the signs.” she says.
Issac sighs and nods. “You’re right…what do you think of our chances?”
“For the next year? Pretty good. Worst case scenario we’re actually fairly well equipped to rebuild somewhere. Best case scenario? We find other ships, other colonies, maybe jump back to Sol and find earth completely fine.” she replies.
Issac shakes his head. “That's not worse case. Worse case is we find other humans and they destroy the station. Or whatever caused this happens again. Or whoever caused it finds us. There’s a lot of ways we die, humanity dies. But not a lot of ways to survive…thanks for telling me what to expect. You’ll be watching tomorrow?”
“Yea…want me to come up here for it? My team knows their work well enough that I can let them work for a day or two.” she says crossing her arms and smiling at him.
Issac stares at her for a second looking for something that's not there before nodding. “I could use the company up here.”
“Then its a date. I’ll sort us out for lunch.” she says turning and leaving him.
He sighs and looks down at his cup. The liquid inside was cold now and his arm ached from being held up at that angle for so long. A note of worry crept in at how he hadn't noticed until he’d wanted to. Quickly walking over to a welfare station he empties the cold liquid and pours himself a cup of steaming hot caffeine with flavour then returns to his spot at the window watching as the cargo ship leaves, the second one moving on rails into the launching berth where two groups are waiting to load it up.
“System, terminal 9, bring up everything on cyberization implants…search sleep requirements and highlight.” he orders.
The next day he was watching the command terminal. It was off to one side of the bridge and dominated one wall. Right now it was showing exactly what the captain of the cargo ship was seeing, which was a close up and detailed view of the crippled cruiser before panning down to the planet.
“Look at the planet. If we trace back the orbit there’s a 100km gap in one of the slices that hit the planet…” the captain's voice faded out as someone else spoke up. “The cuts planetside aren't actually that deep, a few dozen metres mostly. It's just the scale of the impact. Damage to infrastructure would have been the killing blow. Look, nuclear fallout from reactor damage… a few defences around the city detonated too by the look of things….right the ship sorry I'm a research captain.”
The scope changed again back to the cruiser. “Docking bay for shuttles, Cargo door, or we could go close to the slice and move in from there…shuttle bay it is.”
“They’re not trained for this, remember.” Chief Botanist Clarrissa says walking in with two trays stacked on each other. “They’re going to be nervous, probably trigger happy.”
“Could you do better?” Issac asks.
“Leading them? No. If I had a squad of snakes. We’d go in cold and kill anything in our way to rip out what you needed. Which isn't exactly a good starting point when trying to form bonds of trust between former enemies.” she replies, popping the lid on one of the trays revealing a bowl of steaming rice and some processed insect proteins that look like what he’s been told pork is.
He watches her from the corner of his eye whilst he watches the command screen switch from ship camera to a vac suit camera entering in through a cut out airlock. Two security officers float into the airlock and begin setting up the cutting tools whilst another pair work outside to fit a plastic temporary airlock seal around the blown outer door.
By the time the inner airlock is cut through Clarissa hands him a steaming bowl of rice and not-pork drizzled in sauce. He accepts it and uses the spork to stab a lump of meat before scooping a mouthful of rice up and eating it and immediately gagging on the assault of flavours.
“Shit sorry, you’ve been eating paste since wake up haven't you?” Clare apologises, taking the bowl from him and handing him her yet unflavoured bowl once his coughing fit subsides.
He takes it and puts it to one side before reaching for his coffee and gulping down a mouthful then swishing another around to get rid of the remaining burn. “Spicy.” he notes.
“That was tomato, onion and bell pepper flavouring.” she replies with a smirk. “One of the advantages of having done this a few times post cyberization.” she says picking up the bowl and shoving a spoonful of saucy rice into her mouth. “Don't need to readjust my taste.” she finishes after swallowing the mouthful.
Issac shrugs and takes another small mouthful of just rice this time and lets the assault of texture and flavour batter him before swallowing it and moving onto the pork.
As he does the security team sweep through the corridors of the ship, a secondary screen showing a digital map of where they’ve been and what each section of the ship was for. A large portion of the space they move through is just cargo racks and stores that they quickly scan over, letting the cargo ship and by extension the station systems catalogue as they move.
Issac watches as the team secure their entrance to the ship and start moving through the rear section bit by bit. It doesn't take them long to find the first group of cyro pods. They’re easily twice the size of the ones on the tyco, each one when touched shows a display with the basic information of who’s inside. Name age and health.
“Can it be removed?” he asked before cursing and remembering that there was a good few minutes delay between him and the ship.
“Looks like the pods are built into the ship, it’ll take us some time to figure out a way to remove them safely. Lets get a count first and search for anyone awake, or any corpses.'' The search continued through the cruiser for an hour before the team returned to the cargo ship to rest, refuel their vac suits and go at it again. As they did they identified locked doors for armouries, the engine bay and a series of entrances that matched up with the exposed sections around the slice and the reactor.
The next day the cargo ship moved to the front section of the ship and the security team began again from a forward airlock and began mapping the front end of the ship. They didn't find any cryopods in long rows like last time but did find a locked and sealed room that didn't match anything the teams knew about. By the time they’d mapped everything it was time to wait on a command decision form Issac on how to proceed.
“What do you think?” he asked Clare who had joined him for a second day on the bridge.
“Hmm. if there’s any officers chances are they’re in a secure area close to what we think is the bridge. Every other section of the ship we’re fairly sure we know about. So it depends if you want to scrap as much as possible then wake up crew, or wake them up first and see about cooperating.”
Issac doesn't reply instantly. Instead he’s chewing over possible outcomes and what way is best to proceed. After a minute of silence he nods. “I want them to cut into what we think is the officers pod bay. Extract a few pods and bring them over along with whatever supplies we can easily grab. Get into the cargo bay for that but don't destructively open the bay doors. It’ll be easier if we’re not rescuing drifting supplies.” he orders.
Half an hour later the security team were moving again. This time they moved through the ship with purpose towards the sealed forward section and after setting up a pressurised zone, started cutting into the armoured door. It took them longer than expected since the door was reinforced beyond their expectations but after a brief consultation with one of the cargo ships crew they changed up their cutting mix and sliced through the bulkhead leaving melted hot slag around a large hole. Inside what just what they expected, more cryopods. What they didn't expect was a single starved person holding a rifle aiming at the door, pod open.
“Tyco security forces! Stand down! We’ve boarded the ship looking for survivors!” the officer in charge shouts.
The JA officer looks around and backs up still pointing his gun at the security team before backing up to the back wall. “STAY BACK I’LL S-Shoot!” he screams.
“Easy. everyone out, just me inside.” the security officer orders.
“Smart call.” Clare notes watching it from the bridge with Issac.
“Why?”
“The poor sod pulls the trigger, kills only one guy, the rest throw in a stun grenade and merc him. Recover the pods carry on with one casualty.” she notes.
Issac nods at the logic and returns his attention to the screen.
“Easy sir. We’re from tyco, your ships crippled. Something hit you just like it hit us.”
“LIAR. I i i i it w-was an attack. My pod opened so I could assess damage but the power went down, the door wouldn't open…orders are to stay awake and monitor situation…”
“So you did your job. And now a rescue team is here. But listen. We’ve searched the entire ship. Most of your crew seem to be alive but we don't know how to open these pods safely. You do…tell you what. One of the guys has a nutrient pack here. You look like you need it more than we do…”
The skinny officer nods still wide eyed. “Michel, grab your nutrient pack and pass it here would you?” the security man shouts.
A moment later a hand moves into view holding a foil pack with a spout on it. The officer takes it and holds it out. “I'm going to drift forward to the middle of the room ok. I’ll open the pack and take a sip so you know its not bad and then you can have the rest ok?”
The JA officer shakily nods and Issac notes the gun drop down slightly. The camera shows the security officer move forwards, then after a moment of sound. “Ugh, I swear it tastes worse than the usual stuff.” he groans before pushing it towards the officer. “I'm warning you that stuff is nasty. But it keeps you alive.”
The JA officer doesn't pay attention, instead taking the pack with one hand and sipping at the slurry inside, he grimaces and nearly heaves the precious sludge back up but within moments the pack is empty and he sighs in relief.
“How long have you been awake?” the security guard asks.
“Don't know. Since the incident.” the officer replies.
“We’ve been in the system, about 2 weeks now. So well done on surviving this long.” he says. “Listen my orders are to recover as many pods as possible, can we move these things safely?”
The officer nods. “Where to?”
“We have a cargo hauler docked to the ship. We’re going to take whatever we can. And leave the wreckage.”
“Wreckage?”
“That's right. Your ships been cut in half. Our’s isn't jump worthy but it's in one piece. And we have room for you and all your crew.”
“But your tyco.”
“And your JA and whoever hit you hit us just the same.” the security officer replies.
They go back and forth for a while more until the officer agrees to put on a crew survival suit and follow the security officer to the cargo ship. Once inside he’s shown the damage to the ship and the planet below.
“What did this?”
“We don't know. But we still need your help and your crew's help.”
“Are there any JA ships in system?”
“Not that we’ve managed to spot. Our stations scanners were damaged and still getting repaired.”
The officer sighs. “Alright, h-h-here's what you need to do.”
