Ok let me just start by saying this isn't something I would even remotely consider doing on purpose. I mean, I pee in the shower sometimes doesn't everyone? But I'm in the piping trade so I know what a shower drain cannot handle (solids).
Anyways, I've been known to hold my poop in until it's an emergency. Ever since I was a kid, I just feel like I have better things to do than spend any time shitting. That said, when I do have to go it's basically coming out. I hold it in all day and run to the toilet when I get home for my daily emergency poop. I feel like once I even see the toilet, it's happening whether I checked for the presence of toilet paper or not.
Yesterday, I pooped at the normal time. I figured I was good. Right before bed I decided I was going to shower before bed instead of in the morning to save some time. I started walking towards the shower, glanced at the toilet and I guess my butthole was triggered or something and I felt a poop coming on. I figured I was fine though. I don't poop twice a day. Probably just a fart.
I went in the shower and started showering. My wife was using the toilet (it has its own little room in the master bath. She would never toilet in the same room I was showering). I decided to try to let the fart out in the shower but was amazed when a whole turd came out. I managed to catch it, but then I couldn't figure out what the fuck to do next. Do I run across the house naked holding a turd and risk being seen by my wife, or do I try to handle it in the shower?
I am also known to enjoy cold beverages while in the shower, so I spotted a bottle I had left in there another day. In a moment of desperation I decided I was going to try to cram the turd into this bottle. Needless to say, it wasn't going well. Bits of turd were falling to the shower floor, and I was trying to get them to go through the drain. Turd bits were everywhere. Some of it made it into the bottle. My wife was now walking around the house asking the dogs if they pooped and where it is. I heard her come near the shower and mutter 'it has to be over here somewhere...' but she did not open the shower door.
I had to have been in the shower for 30 mins trying to clean up this turd-tastrophe. I finally managed to get the chunks down the drain, get the area cleaned up (I scrubbed everything with body wash) and the cap on the poop bottle. I then proceeded with my normal shower routine, then when I was done I grabbed a trash bag and 'cleaned up' while also sneakily heading towards the shower and throwing the bottle in there. I dumped a bunch of draino in the drain to hopefully neutralize any lingering turd smell and later today I will deluge it with water and plunge it. My wife never said a word to me about the smell. I don't know if I will ever be the same.

2023.03.30 19:01 aphaelion Minimal specs for a host that ONLY receives blind, encrypted ZFS dataset snapshots?

I would like to give a family member a minimal box which they can plug in and I can remotely send encrypted snapshots to, as an offsite backup. The datasets won't even be mounted, nor will the host even have the decryption keys - I just want a bucket to send the snapshots to, in case my own house gets blown away by a tornado or something.
I've already read advice like "Be sure to have lots of ram!" and "Be sure to use ECC memory!" when using ZFS. I've seen contentious debate about both of these and more, (esp the ECC). I'm not wanting to rehash those, but I'm wondering if the requirements are somewhat softer for a case where the dataset won't be mounted or read from, and snapshots will be sent infrequently (like maybe weekly), and scrubs even less frequently, like once a month or so.
Is it possible to run something like this on minimal hardware? e.g. a Rasperry Pi or other SBC with a SATA adapter? Or even just a tiny microATX PC?

For clarity - I've been going over to her house every other week To take the items for donation. I have not been over there in about a month because she went out of town for 2 weeks. My husband wants to go over there right now And call adult protective services in front of her and i'm telling him to wait. I’m a new parent of a 5 month old. I’m with him full-time because I’m still on maternity leave, but he’ll be starting a nanny share when I return to work at 7 months.
The other family in the share needed care sooner, so the nanny has already started with them. The other family will also be exclusively hosting. In order to give my son and the nanny a chance to ease into things (and to give me a chance to get some household things done before I return to work), I’m thinking about having him do some short shifts or half days. The nanny says she’ll do whatever works for us. She will of course be paid a higher rate whenever both children are there.
With about 6 weeks until he’s in full-time care, what’s the best way to ease him into it? I was thinking two half-days a week until he starts: is that enough for him to remember her and get comfortable at the house? Would it be too disruptive to the nanny? She’s very experienced, so I’m sure she’ll be fine no matter what, but I want to do whatever is best for him and for establishing a good relationship between them.

We’ve recently moved into a house in the countryside (North Wales, UK) where unfortunately we’re experiencing quite a bit of noise nuisance in the form of dog barking from farm dogs and some dog kennels. Both the farm and kennels are quite far away from our property, and it’s not smthg I would ever complain to them about (after all, they were here first!), but the noise does seem to be echoing and amplifying between all three buildings somehow, which is really affecting our enjoyment of the garden most days. We’re planning to have some architectural work done soon to redesign the house, so I’m just wondering if there’s any sort of acoustic consultancy or architectural service out there that could help us? I just want to understand how the sound is carrying and if there’s anything we can do to mitigate that in the new house design. Is this kind of a service for residential homeowners even a thing in the UK?

2023.03.30 19:00 close-this Wags, Crate Training and Puppy Proofing

18 weeks today!
Barking is down (We compromised, and I let her out of the pen to lie at my feet on a house lead a lot more often. She stays out of trouble or goes back in the pen. Quiet behavior is rewarded with occasional puffed rice.)
Biting is getting softer! She was bitten but not visibly harmed by another puppy yesterday- not holding it against him at all. Today she has been mouthy at times- but except for once I barely felt it.
I took her to Home Depot and she was just the best girl.
So I'm enjoying having a puppy- more ups and less downs.
One thing I haven't figured out. She sleeps and naps well in the crate, but how do I train her to go in and stay in there while she's more awake so I can go out? Should I just start putting her in there (maybe with a licky mat) and just build up the time with a reward?
Also, we need to do more puppy proofing. For a very intelligent dog, beyond curtains and clutter (and plug covers), what do you recommend? I think we're going to need cabinet locks too.
PS. I realize I haven't read all the advice on the page yet. (There's quite a lot.)

I start in the Fall 2023 and have found a ton of places available, but I've been told to try to lock something down now, since demand goes up when the new undergraduate class is announced in the late spring/summer?
I have some buddies that did their undergraduate at AU and are sticking around for grad school, and they've told me to avoid samford square and maybe yugo north? Any other spots to totally go foabsolutely avoid? Any other good things to know? Thanks all :)

My brain is broken and I hate it
This can’t be the brain that used to devour sci-fi and fantasy for fun. It can’t be. This brain is tired and worn down and hates everything.
It’s sick of remembering updates on Outlook and how to do functions on Excel, how to conduct interviews and lead classes on the same day. Which department is associated with which grant funding agency and which school needs a new survey for that summative report.
How many calories are in a bowl of black beans and rice, will the body have enough time to get exercise today before family care takes over. Why is this body aging. Why does this brain remember the smell of the coffee factory next door to my house in Berkeley but not my daughter’s social security number.
When competitions are what weekends, when are doctor visits, and when guitar tuition is due. Why yet another friend’s body was found, and if they will ever find out why another body of someone I knew was found in a bathtub in Kentucky with too much oxy for anyone to survive.
I want to be able to cry again.
This can’t be the same brain, it can’t.
How in the crystallized FUCK this brain wrote and defended both a thesis and a dissertation is beyond me.

2023.03.30 18:59 my_meat_is_grass_fed Inherited estate and selling primary home, what should be done to prepare for 2023 taxes?

Let me begin by saying I'm posting on behalf of my boyfriend, and have already told him to talk to a CPA. I'm just looking for general advice if he needs to do anything now to minimize his tax liability, or if he's right he doesn't have to worry for another year.
His sister died this past New Year's Eve. She was living in the family home, which she bequeathed to her brother (my boyfriend) and his son, along with a couple hundred thousand in Charles Schwab accounts, a car, and the contents of the house. The will was recorded with the county and the property probated in February (please forgive me if I'm using incorrect terminology). Because there is no mortgage on the family home, BF and his son moved in, and the house BF owns is currently on the market. He should make at least $100,000 over what he owes on that sale.
I know OF capital gains, and inheritance taxes, but that's as far as my knowledge extends. Should he just put a few thousand away to be able to pay taxes next year? If so, what would be a good guesstimate? Should he open and max out a Roth IRA? Since he'll no longer be paying a mortgage, should he max out his 401k (I don't know if he's already doing this)?
It should be noted, we don't live together, and our finances are not combined. His inheritance does not affect me in any way, but much of the advice is given here will also apply to his 27 year old son.
I don't know the value of the family home, but based on other houses in the area, I would guess at least $200k.

2023.03.30 18:59 JadeAug I think the 1031 exchange is a huge contributor to the bubble and should be allowed for primary residence only

For those that are unfamiliar, the 1031 exchange is a tax rule that allows you to defer the capital gains taxes you would have to pay on the appreciation of the house when you sell it, as long as you buy an equivalent piece of property within a certain amount of time. It essentially lets you kick that capital gains tax can down the road until you die.
That has led to an enormous growth in property speculators because essentially these investors don't have to pay taxes as long as they keep buying more expensive properties. I believe that this has incentivized real estate churn and led to massive growth in prices.
Like imagine if they government said you don't have to pay capital gains taxes on the Ford stock you just sold as long as you buy an equal or more greater amount of GM stock within a couple months. The end result would be higher volume traded and higher prices because it creates a false demand.
The problem with that is that it is the price of people homes we are dealing with, not stocks. This 1031 exchange, along with my other real estate laws, need to be allowed for your primary residence only

In 2021 I started a small service-based business on the side. A quick description of what we do: I contract with a local business owner to sell certain products on their premises acting almost as an extension of the local business itself (we are not an agent of the business, self insured etc.) . Upon agreeing upon which products, I acquire the products, market it, sell it, staff my team, then give the owner a percentage of net revenue. They like the service because it allows them to focus on the more important aspects of the business while still making some money. A comparison for the sake of this post would be a baseball arena hiring an outside vendor to sell the hotdogs during the game. The team can now focus more on the baseball stuff as they've outsourced the people selling hotdogs. In this situation, I own the company that sells these hotdogs. (I know teams make a lot from concessions so would never do that, it's just an example for the sake of context. I would be more specific but I currently do not have any local competition and don't want to tip my hand hahah.)
That being said, I have seen a fair amount of success (for a side business) thus far, and have slowly been expanding. The "problem," for lack of a better term, is I have been able to see this success/growth without traditional marketing. Most of my customers are local businesses with whom I've previously developed professional, but personal, relationships over the years. I have a full-time job that almost all were aware of so they did not mind me pitching my business' services to them as it didn't come off like a traditional sales pitch.
Now that I have the bandwidth to bring in more customers, I want to get some suggestions on how I should go about doing it. I am not currently big enough to go all out and hire a marketing company. My hope is to convey some of my biggest points which are: 1) it's no cost to the owner, simply put the owner will quite literally never get an invoice from me or owe me any money; 2) the convenience that comes with outsourcing something that already is not a priority but takes up a lot of time; and 3) the data I've collected from both consumers and supported by my current records that say the service is a tremendous value added. I have all kinds of graphs, numbers, etc. but I know from both my primary career, and having a fair amount of small business owners in my family that ears close quickly when something feels like a sales pitch.
All this to say I thought it would be valuable to ask other small/local business owners their thoughts. What have you done and what have you seen that works? Should I cold call, develop some pamphlets and other written materials, just shoot an email, pop in etc? Again, most of my current customers I brought in based on previously knowing one another but there are a couple who I was able to reel in via 1) a cold call and 2) just stopping in and speaking with the manager present.

Thanks for whatever input, and I thoroughly enjoy talking the logistical/gritty side of business ownership so feel free to PM if you want to add more or brainstorm in general.
