2023.04.01 10:13 p-d-ball My portal fantasy series and a huge book sale.
I just finished the fourth book in my first series and wanted to share it with this community, as it's a portal fantasy. Also, the first two books are on sale for 99 cents, along with a bunch of other fantasy books you might be interested in.
Writing this has been humbling. I made a ton of mistakes - spelling, grammar, continuity - but learned along the way. Embarrassingly, and this is obvious in hindsight, my writing gets better. That means book 1 isn’t as good as book 2, which is bested by book 3. Looking back, I should have worked on standalones while maturing as a writer. But I didn’t, and I will finish this series.
So, it is with some humility that I post my series here.
The series is about a person from about our time who wakes up in the body of a young princess, as a prisoner of an enemy army that’s invading her family’s kingdom. She doesn’t know the culture or politics, or why the war is even going on, or why she’s in this world at all.
In this world, magic is so powerful that it has impeded technological improvement, with technology being stuck around the Macedonian era (for ex., there are no siege weapons because magic performs that function and can easily stop projectiles).
The first book happens over the course of three days. Because Cayce is being cagey about her situation – she doesn’t want anyone to figure out that she’s an imposter – she can’t find answers about why she’s here and events happen so quickly, with political machinations already in motion behind the scenes, she struggles to gain control of her situation.
In the second book, her weakened army races to escape the enemy army, which is attempting to entrap them in a pincer move. Despite the urgency, the traveling gives Cayce a little respite, more free time, and she learns more about the world she’s in and starts making plans about introducing improved war technology from Earth’s history. However, she’s given hints about who she is and why she’s here through an incredibly traumatic event, which fundamentally alters her.
In book three, Cayce moves forward with her plans of improving weapons technology but suffers PTSD from the events of the previous book. Additionally, the weight of responsibility is thrust upon her and she has to navigate placating power-holders to retain their support while not giving into their designs.
Book four begins with Cayce’s planning starting to bear fruition, with some great successes, but the hidden part of her, the reason for her being in this world, is emerging and derailing everything.
I tried to make these books as realistic as possible, the main character making the best decisions possible. But several aspects of her situation make this difficult. First, her antagonists are acting in their own best interests and she’s dropped into the middle of their ongoing schemes. She’s largely ignorant of these plans, until she gains enough information to see the larger picture. Second, because she’s from our world, the pre-modern culture is a shock. Her modern way of thinking doesn’t work here because of the different values, norms, and morality. Third, as a child, the adults in charge don’t take her seriously and as a princess, they want to use her for power. Fourth, she’s in a teenager’s body and struggles to control its heightened emotions.
I’m happy to say, and still in shock, that some people really like it. A war veteran wrote me to say that the PTSD is described accurately, and he was very glad to see it in fantasy. A person wrote that while he liked the books, he wanted to see the main character sexually explore herself and was annoyed I didn’t write that. Someone else added that they were quite pleased the books did not delve into eroticism. One comment that floored me came from a very kind man who compared my writing to Agatha Christie. Another person said it was the best in the genre. I can only assume they were drunk when reading the books.
Thank you very much! Truly appreciated.

2023.04.01 10:04 p-d-ball A big thank you and a link to an indie authors book sale
I posted my first book in this series here before and received some excellent and constructive criticism – and for that, I’m very grateful. Because I owe this community, I wanted to post a follow up and alert you to an indie book sale.
This is my first fantasy series and it has been humbling. When I posted initially, flush with excitement at having finished my book, thinking it fit in the rational fiction category, I was met with a lot of criticism. That was difficult to take, but the more I considered, the more it helped, and I now see the critiques as valid and that I was pretty naïve. I therefore want to give back to the rational fiction subreddit.
The series is about a person from about our time who wakes up in the body of a young princess, as a prisoner of an enemy army that’s invading her family’s kingdom. She doesn’t know the culture or politics, or why the war is even going on, or why she’s in this world at all.

She’s largely ignorant of these plans, until she gains enough information to see the larger picture. Second, because she’s from our world, the pre-modern culture is a shock. Her modern way of thinking doesn’t work in this world because of the different values, norms, and morality. Third, as a child, the adults in charge don’t take her seriously and as a princess, they want to use her for power. Fourth, she’s in a teenager’s body and struggles to control its heightened emotions.
In terms of realism, Cayce only introduces technology that she can actually get made, given the world’s constraints (sarissa, crossbows, full plate armor and distillation). She talks about how difficult it would be to invent even flint-lock pistols and the limitations of her own knowledge without the internet at hand.
Because of the above, this series is probably rational-fiction adjacent rather than straight rational fiction.
As I wrote, it’s been humbling putting this out there. Some of the critique pointed out problems with my writing – mainly in what I show and don’t show – others corrected my understandings of fantasy genres and others questioned the main character’s course of action. All these comments were incredibly helpful.
Embarrassingly, and this is obvious in hindsight, my writing gets better. That means book 1 isn’t as good as book 2, which is bested by book 3. Looking back, I should have worked on standalones while maturing as a writer. But I didn’t, and I will finish this series.

Another person said it was the best in the genre (isekai). I can only assume they were drunk when reading the books.
So, to give back to this community, my first two books are on sale for 99 cents. And part of a giant indie writers sale, with other books you might be interested in, which I’ll include links for.
Thank you very much! Truly appreciated.

2023.04.01 07:36 valtro05 Resolving Original Xbox EEPROM Error
Hello, I have an original Xbox that I got for $5 at a garage sale that has an EEPROM error. I could tell when it was apart that it was modded (poorly done, solder joints cracked, wires not connected properly, etc) so I just removed the mod, cleaned it up, and replaced the clock capacitor. I've done a bit of googling about this issue, and options include building an EEPROM reader, extracting it, and then unlocking the hard drive I believe (could be wrong). Is there a way where I don't have to do this? I'm sure I could figure it out, but was hoping there would be an easier solution, like a re-mod or something.

2023.04.01 07:22 cuberandgamer Is Plano getting their money's worth out of DART? Its complicated, but yes
Recently, I attended a Plano townhall at UT Dallas. Councilman Shelby Williams talked about, in great detail, how Plano was giving DART $100 million, and they only saw a fraction of that value returned by the services DART provided.
Shelby Williams is maybe not the most transit friendly councilman in Plano. He accused DART of wasting money running empty buses no one wants to use, and suggests that even Dallas is getting a poor return on investment from DART.
Matt Shaheen (represents West Plano in the state legislature) Ffiled a bill in the Texas state legislature that would require DART to provide service levels proportional to sales tax contribution by a member city. This would mean that, if you spend say, $80 million in sales tax to DART, DART would have to provide $80 Million worth of transit services. I want to show you all a comparison between Garland and Plano's bus network:
https://preview.redd.it/unc5bjxhz6ra1.png?width=536&format=png&auto=webp&s=db26bcdd1f0d2104658d8c40b51dba499def051d As you can see, Garland has a fairly comprehensive fixed route bus service, though the buses are not very frequent for the most part. Keep in mind, some of these routes are also serving Richardson and Dallas, not all of those bus miles are being driven in Garland.
Lets take a look at Plano
https://preview.redd.it/rpf2udytz6ra1.png?width=750&format=png&auto=webp&s=99f7f240880ebe9cf11936cd437b81fbcdcce201 I bring this up because I think this demonstrates where Plano is coming from. Sure, we don't know the costs of these services, but at a glance of the map you can maybe see how Plano might actually be getting less investment from DART than a city like Garland despite spending more money on DART services. GoLink works well for Plano though, and GoLink requires a higher subsidy per passenger trip than fixed route service.
Now, here are those numbers I was talking about, what DART calculates they spend in each member city:
https://preview.redd.it/batwgsl0z6ra1.png?width=1000&format=png&auto=webp&s=929a5b87df140132a3ca337512fefd947f1e2e27 Keep in mind, DART has other revenue services besides sales tax. Fares, advertising, and federal grants. That's why they spend more in the service area cities than they receive from them.
According to these numbers, if accurate, Plano was actually getting more out of DART than their sales tax could provide in 2019.
We also can't ignore the fact that DART is spending billions to bring the silver line to Plano, or that DART will probably give Plano some pretty serious frequency improvements in phase two of their network redesign.
So, does DART need to fundamentally rethink their bus network and how they allocate resources so they can satisfy Plano? There's room for a lot of debate here, but if you ask me, I'd say no.
There are gaps and opportunities in Plano that DART should work to address. DART replaced many buses in Plano with GoLink service, but a lot of the bus routes they replaced had very limited service, or sometimes rush hour only service. It may be worth exploring giving some of the axed fixed route corridors in Plano a proper shot, with full weekend and 6am to midnight service. Some Golink zones could be added and expanded as well. So don't get me wrong, I would NOT be opposed to more DART service in Plano.
However, I believe that imposing restrictions on where costs should be allocated within the DART network, based on each member city's contribution, would be counterproductive. While this may seem like a logical approach, it could hinder DART's ability to effectively allocate resources to meet the transit needs of all member cities and their residents. When making a transit network, ideally you may want to focus on travel patterns, serving commutes, ridership, and making a network useful to their riders in Plano and other member cities. You probably wouldn't focus disaggregating cost by member city contribution because that would be a hinderance to the network. Making DART better for Plano residents or commuters sometimes requires improving the DART network outside of Plano.
How many of you would benefit from a new route or increased frequency on a route outside of the city you live in? My guess is, almost all of you can think of a few improvements to the network that would make your life better that exist outside of the city you live in. Everyone who uses the route 239 in Plano can potentially benefit from every route that serves the Addison transit center, even if that route serves some other city such as Carrolton.
The focus of DART staff shouldn't be "well in this geographical boundary, we need to spend x amount more resources here", it should be, "for our 13 member cities and their residents, lets provide the most access possible and serve their commutes as best as we can"

2023.04.01 06:58 Ordinary-Agent3458 [NEWBIE] Thinking of buying an electric guitar
So I’ve been “playing” acoustic guitar for about a year but all the music I like to listen to is mostly played on an electric guitar. This is making me lean towards buying one but I’m not really sure where to start. I love the look of a Les Paul, but I’ve read they are difficult for a beginner.
I listen to everything from blues to metal and from what I’ve read online different style guitars make different sound (I.e. Stratocaster for blues). I guess I’m looking for some advice if it really matters what style you buy or is it more just what feels good to you/what looks good to you.
For context I have a Yamaha acoustic guitar that I bought at a garage sale.

2023.04.01 04:28 Alternative-List-153 Creepy Rythum Game
Every level involves someone watching a haunted video, which is also where the music comes from. There will also be monsters themed around the video coming toward you. The player has to close doors, windows, curtains, etc on the beat of the song to prevent the monsters from entering the room. If they let a monster into the room, or, the player is off-tempo, they lose and have to start over. Beating the levels will unlock other stages. The "lore" is just a simple "creepy old man is selling haunted DVDs at a garage sale", nothing too major. Another random concept you could apply, if you make this game, is to make all the characters themed around ice cream, so, you could call this game "Chilly Channels" or whatever. Hope you guys like this idea!

- All columns are Away / Home. Records are typically current as-of the time of posting, and do not always contain the matchup results from the day of posting.
- A bolded matchup means that there is a "Probability of Precipitation" greater than 50% in a non-domed stadium at the time of this post.
- An italicized matchup means that it is Game 2 of a doubleheader, which for Pick'Em purposes will not be applicable (only Game 1 is counted, but Game 2 is still included above so that you can be aware that pitching management may be different than a non-doubleheader game day).
- Probable pitchers and stats sourced from mlb.com (via the MLB-StatsAPI); weather data soured from the OpenWeather One Call API.
- Estimated chance of winning percentages sourced from FiveThirtyEight’s 2023 MLB Game Predictions, an ELO-based, easy to understand ratings system.
Details such as probable pitchers, winning odds, and match certainty are subject to change. Note that a pick for a team in a cancelled game (weather or otherwise) is automatically counted as a correct guess.

2023.04.01 04:19 Even-Spread-4249 New vs Used
First time mom here! While I’m expecting in October, I am really looking forward to going to garage sales this summer to get a head start on baby stuff! What items (if any) should I avoid getting used? I absolutely hate the idea of buying everything new-especially with how quickly they grow, so I wanted to reach out to the pros! 😆
