Every Tuesday I’m going to try and post a Criterion movie on here to discuss. I am going to go in order of spine release and would love to hear from people who have already seen it or are curious to see it.
This week is Spine #93, Black Narcissus. As of March 21st, 2023 it is available to stream on the Channel with supplements, has a Blu-ray and DVD release, and was laserdisc release #38.

Aesthetically not a horror movie but a story that digs deep into the psyche as we watch well-intentioned nuns descend into madness.
Isolation, lack of control of the surroundings, incessant weather patterns, a group of people that go up into the mountains to build a new life, and a silent terror that eats at our protagonists. Surprisingly I am not talking about The Shining, but rather Powell & Pressburger’s Black Narcissus. It is definitely not as intense as Kubrick’s vision, but in place of freaky twins and a gnarly old lady we have a technicolor nightmare up in the distant Himalayan mountains.
Sister Clodagh is the main character in this story as opposed to Jack Torrance, but they play similar roles. Sister Clodagh is a young nun who is given her chance to be a sister superior at the Mopu palace far away from any Western civilization. She wants to do her best, and is given a set of junior nuns to help her build a school and hospital for the local citizens. The basic story is that there is a mysterious force that drives any British monks or nuns crazy and it starts to impact this particular order as well. It is a well-made piece of psychological terror with some fantastic individual frames as a few of the sisters really struggle with their sanity.
I think Technicolor is good for many purposes but not good for horror, so I struggled to get fully engaged with the terror elements of the story. They are there for sure, and I imagine many would pick up on them, but something about the artificiality of the Technicolor makes me feel detached from the story, which is difficult for a mind-bending horror film. Even in black and white I believe this would have been a more powerful film, but as it is critics adore this and it’s rated as the 174th-best film of all time. I disagree with this ranking, and would put Peeping Tom from the Powell/Pressburger team above this as an effective horror film and better movie all around.
This is still good though, and I’m glad to have seen it. David Farrar was really good as Mr. Dean, and Deborah Kerr was excellent as Sister Clodagh struggling to keep it together in a foreign land. Worth a watch but I wouldn’t rush to see it.

From this we can extrapolate that a human containing a mechanism for detecting and sexually avoiding close kin might be more successful reproductively than a human without such a mechanism. (It's not certain, for one thing because mechanisms cost resources to build. A human that doesn't spend energy on a kin-detection mechanism might nevertheless be more successful. But it's a reasonable guess.)
We can extrapolate further that given its possible benefits, such a mechanism might actually exist as part of the innate mental hardware of humans. In other words, it's possible that in more or less all humans worldwide, the genome causes the reliable development of this mechanism.
Note that so far, this is all hypothesizing. No claim is being made as to the accuracy of these conjectures. It is almost as if the human brain were specifically designed to misunderstand Darwinism. [010]We can imagine then that there is scope for even more misunderstanding if we take the word 'evolutionary' and add the word 'psychology' to it. In this brief article I'm going to explain what Evolutionary Psychology is (and what it is not).

The goal of research in evolutionary psychology is to discover and understand the design of the human mind. [040]It is interesting to note that although the discipline is called 'evolutionary psychology', the stated goal of its research makes no mention of evolution. Some people mistakenly think that the goal of evolutionary psychology is to identify supposed adaptations in the human brain and then explain their evolutionary history. This is not the case. As Tooby and Cosmides put it:
Like other cognitive scientists, when evolutionary psychologists refer to the mind, they mean the set of information processing devices, embodied in neural tissue, that is responsible for all conscious and nonconscious mental activity, that generates all behavior, and that regulates the body. Like other psychologists, evolutionary psychologists test hypotheses about the design of these computational devices using laboratory methods from experimental cognitive and social psychology, developmental psychology, experimental economics, cognitive neuroscience, and cross-cultural fieldwork. Humans are significantly less motivated to mate with close relatives than to mate with distant relatives or strangers.From there, the hypothesis can be rigorously tested just like it would be in any other branch of psychology, including in multiple diverse environments, to reduce the chances that a reduced motivation is a culturally-learned aversion (and therefore not necessarily true of humans in general) rather than the result of a specific inbuilt mechanism.
Note that the hypothesis contains no mention of evolution or adaptation. Even though the hypothesis was arrived at through considerable use of evolutionary knowledge and principles, that knowledge and those principles are not on test. mid october ng 2021 may nakachat ako sa omegle then lumipat ng tg. Tuloy tuloy chat namin sa tg, umaga before sya pumasok sa skul and hapon tas mag start na ulit yun from mga 8pm or 9pm hanggang sa madaling araw ganon lagi naming setup kung ano ano lang pinaguusapan namin getting to know stuffs etc. Nagcacall din kame and madalas umabot ng umaga kapag wala syang pasok (minsan nga kahit meron) tas ng mga mid november tinanong ko if may chance bang mag level up kung anong meron kami pumayag naman sya na titignan nya rin kung may nararamdaman din ba sya sakin. (BTW M24 ako ngayon working na nasa manila and sya F19 1st yr college na nasa bicol) so eto mid December ayun nagkalinawan na kami na parang wala naman syang nararamdaman for me kasi ako fall na talaga sa kanya and mahal ko na sya. Araw araw ba naman kausap and umaabot pa madaling araw e. So ayun parang medyo naging bihira na lang comms namin kasi nga nagmomove on na ko. Nag chat na lang kami nung pasko and bagong taon. So January 2022 nawala na lang sya bigla. Di na sya nagreply sa last chat ko.
Habang lumilipas ang buwan patuloy ko pa rin sya chinachat monthly mga 1-2x a month nanngangamusta ganon kasi tuwing nakikita ko RedVelvet naaalala ko sya kasi nahatak nya ko makinig sa RedVelvet kasi fan na fan sya non. N87 suite is just for NIZ X87 series keyboards not including waterproof version, it contains top/bottom case, inner parts and QMK PCB, this time they will be sold in stock and can be shipped quickly.
1,About Design:
(1)Appearance design
A simple and durable design. Base on supporting the sandwich structure, minor adjustments to the frame ratio are made, and repeated modifications to the four round corners to achieve the most satisfactory appearance.

(2)Switch design
For the bluetooth switch design, in order to be better compatible with NIZ EC keyboard, the same press switch design next to ESC is used, and this switch can also be used as an ornament on the front of the keyboard.

Recently had a task to change the label of the ‘Edit…’ button on a related list to something else to better describe what it is actually doing for the client.
I created a new UI Action and copied the OOB ‘Edit..’ one with the only difference was specifying the table that it was to be used in the condition checker. It worked as expected.
When a senior developer reviewed it, I was told that I needed to write a Script Include for a condition checker. As the UI action worked, I asked why???
I was given two basic reasons. 1: The condition field on a UI action has a character limit (254) so I would run out of space and 2: That is they way we have always done it…
Doing a little research, I found a Community post where Chuck Tomasi recommended this very thing. In 2016.
