2023.06.04 12:33 FanOfSkynyrd P0300, P0302, P0306 Misfire codes
Hello. I've got a 2017 Ford Edge with the 3.5L V6 and just under 80k miles on the odometer.
It was just at the dealership to replace the rear main seal which was leaking (under warranty).
Here's the background on my issue (apologies in advance for the long post):
A few days after picking it up from the shop after the rear main seal R&R, my son was driving it. He said the CEL came on so he pulled over but the CEL went away and never came back. He said the car drove fine and didnt seem to act up or anything the rest of the day. I scanned for codes when I got home from work and got nothing, no codes stored.
Fast forward 2 weeks, he says the CEL came on as he was pulling into our neighborhood.
I go out and check, sure enough CEL on (solid, not flashing), I pull the codes: P0300, P0302, and P0306 misfire codes.
The car is going on 7+ years old now with just under 80k on the clock, so I figure probably a good idea to replace the spark plugs anyways. I also decided to throw in new coils as a "while I'm in there" since I opted to do the job myself.
I also replaced the intake plenum gasket since I had to pull the intake off to reach cylinders 1-3.
Everything went smoothly. I fired her up, things sounds normal, idles perfect, so I clear the codes and we go out for a test drive and everything still feels and sounds great. That is until I floor it.
Once engine gets to about 5-6krpm, CEL comes on and is flashing. I immediately pull over, and I can feel it sputtering and it feels sluggish.
I pull the codes, same ones as before but this time they are pending. CEL goes away after maybe 20 seconds.
I drive it around some more, and everything feels fine under "normal" acceleration...no sputtering, shaking, nothing. But every time, under hard acceleration, the CEL comes on flashing, then goes away after about 10-15 seconds.
I'm dropping it off at the dealership on Monday (I know my mechanical limits).
I think the odds are too slim for the new plugs/coils to be bad on the exact same cylinders as before.
I'm curious as to what others think could be the issue.
Fuel injectors possible? Google searching has also indicated a bad ECM.

Memory transcription subject: James Willik, Human historian
Date [standardized human time]: July 13, 2165
In my life, Iāve learned the depths to which tyrants will go to keep their power. After the war against the Federation, almost everyone had. For centuries, the Federation had lied, manipulated, stolen, murdered, done anything no matter the moral cost, to keep its citizens in its grasp, to stay in control. But they made one fatal mistake, one misstep that would loosen their hold on their slaves just long enough for someone to step in and challenge them. That mistake was angering Mankind.
When the dust had settled and the bullets had stopped flying, the UN found treasure troves of stolen knowledge all across the home-systems of the founders of the Federation, the Kolshians and Farsul. Endless libraries of atrocities done and culture stolen, of memories erased and lives destroyed. So much irreversible damage done just to keep their people locked in mental chains.
This is why early in life I decided to become a historian. I wanted to uncover and reintroduce the cultures, ideas, and truths that the Federation had wanted to burn to ash. At the age of 19, I was accepted into the then newly opened Meiers Institute of Knowledge. MIK was named after the former leader of the UN, a man who was described as compassionate and caring by nearly everyone who met him, said to be a hero. The MIK was built to let those ideas blossom forth, by providing unrestricted knowledge and education to anyone that wanted it. During my time at MIK, because of the instruction and guidance provided by my teachers, my distrust of non-humans slowly faded. I made friends and learned things I would remember for the rest of my days. Several years later I reluctantly left the college that had become my home with a doctorate in history.
Iām now 31 years old, and several days ago I received a message from the UN Office of the Historian, stating that I and several others had been invited to the new capitol building on Aafa for a special job offering.

As I wake, I notice how cold I feel. [Had I left the window open last night?] I think to myself. I rub my eyes and grab for my blanket, only managing to grab a handful of cloth from my shirt. I open my eyes to properly aim for the blanket this time only to witness an empty room.
No⦠That isnāt the correct way to describe itā¦This isnāt an empty room, this is the lack of a room. All around me is nothing but darkness.
I try to lift myself off my bed only to realize there is nothing beneath me. Iām the only matter that I can see in this void.
[What the fuck.] [What the fuck!?]
I begin panicking as my brain fully switches on, only now am I fully awake and aware of my situation. I flail my limbs around, trying to turn myself around to no avail as I float through the emptiness. I try to take in a breath only to inhale nothing. Vivid memories of nearly drowning at a vacation by the beach fill my mind. The space in my brain is packed full of questions by now.
[Wha- what the hell is happening? Whereās the air? How am I alive? Is this a dream?] I begin calming down, wildly flailing my arms and legs is going to do nothing for me. A glow begins illuminating the backside of my arms, heating them like warm sunlight. I try to turn around, somehow managing to do so this time.
Light sears itself into my very soul as I stare forward at the object before me. I am seated at the edge of a star, its radiance beaming itself onto me as if it is some divine judge weighing the sins of my heart. Tendrils of superheated plasma ripple around it, like arms through water, effortlessly keeping the orb afloat.
A thunderous whisper echoes through the twisting and winding corridors of my mind. Paradoxically seeming both deafening and silent simultaneously. It is in a language I have never heard before and yet I understand the message all the same.
āFind us. We await.ā
<<>>
For the second time today, I wake up. This time I am in my warm bed in my home on Venlil Prime. The memory of the star does not fade away, as the imagery in my dreams usually do. I stretch and drag my legs off the side of the bed, acclimating my eyes to the ever-present twilight of the Venlil homeworld. I grab a picture frame holding an old photo of me and my parents off my bedside table. Their smiles warming me slightly. I hug the picture-frame into my chest. Itās been 3 years but I still miss them every day. āI wish you were still here, so much. I hope I made you proud.ā
I perform my daily routine and get myself tidy before putting on my clothes. Today is the day that the UN is sending a ship to pick me up. I've gotta look my best if Iām gonna be meeting such important people. I walk through the main hallway of my house, glancing at the art adorning the walls as I pass by. Ever since the knowledge that the Federation has been performing cultural genocide for centuries became public, the market for historians and other professions tasked with discovering the past sky-rocketed. Despite the high pay though, my house was relatively small. A bedroom, bathroom, kitchen, living room, and some various utility and storage rooms was all I needed. I didnāt need a fancy living-space, that wasnāt what made me happy. What made me happy was the work I was doing for the people of the Coalition. Bringing back art and stories from ancient times, reintroducing species to a past and culture that they could be proud of. THAT was what fueled me.
I looked at my holopad and realized I only had 15 minutes before my ship arrived at the spaceport. I hurriedly filled a reusable cup with coffee and rushed out the door, no time for breakfast. I hopped in my car, buckled my seatbelt, turned my key, and backed out of the driveway onto the street, speeding down the road as fast as the anti-grav engine in my car would allow me. There is no way Iām missing an opportunity like this.
As I drove, the spaceport came into view. It towered above all the buildings surrounding it, making them seem miniscule in comparison. Ships swarmed around the structure like bees around a hive, loading and unloading cargo and passengers alike.
5 minutes.
I drew into a parking space in the underground garage. Removing my key and deactivating my vehicle. I slammed the door shut perhaps a little too hard and locked the doors with my keyfob as I sprinted towards the elevators to the top of the port. It took the lift around 50 seconds to travel nearly 300 stories into the sky. I bolted out of the barely opened doors, startling a Venlil couple and nearly knocking over an older looking man wearing a suit. I blurted out an apology and quickly said I was late before dashing off, the man looking more confused than annoyed. I took a quick look at my holopad. 2 minutes. As I ran, I glanced at the signage on the walls. 587 588 589 560! I made my way into the hangar, straightening out my tie as I walked through the doors. I tried to hide how out of breath I was, these suits were
not made for running. The ship was sleek and quite large, undoubtedly suited for luxury purposes, the UN did not spare any expense for its guests it seemed. I walked up the boarding ramp and as the airlock opened, a man stood there to greet me. He was an older gentleman, slightly taller than me. He smiled and outstretched his hand.āHello, I take it that youāre James! The ship is ready for you to depart. My name is Harold and Iāll be your attendant for the flight.ā He spoke enthusiastically with a southern drawl. I grasped the manās hand and shook it. āI hope I didnāt take too long to arrive.ā āDonāt worry son, youāre fine. Itāll take a couple days to reach Aafa so make yourself comfortable, down the hall behind me is the bar, lounge, and eating area, and further down are the sleeping quarters with accompanying bathrooms.ā Before I could respond, Harold spoke again. āThereāll be another passenger onboard, allow me to take you to them.ā The man stepped aside and followed as I walked down the hall to the lounge. The room was quite large, filled with expensive looking furniture and art. To my right was a small dining table and beyond that a kitchen. I looked to my left and felt my heart skip a beat as I locked eyes with a small Venlil with speckled white wool and orange eyes. She stared back, looking equally shocked.
āLemva?ā

2023.06.04 12:30 APC2_19 Short analysis and Bull Case for UP (Union Pacific)
Union Pacific is a stock I have been following for a while, and I plan on adding to my position, since I see a good upside potential (over the long term) and moderate risk, which I can evaluate better than most future developments in other sectors (tech, luxury, cars, oil...)
MY ASSUMPTIONS:
- The American economy will keep growing over the long term, (Buffet, "never bet against America"), since its fundamentals are incredibly solid (capital availability, population growth, stability and confiedence, skilled workforce, lots of value added industries, reserve currency status...)
- Increased Trade with Mexico and the re-industralisation of the US will cause an increased volume of goods and raw materials to be transported among the North American continent. I see no reason why the amount of good transported by rail (chemicals, cars, raw materials, fertilizer, coal and renewables materials...) should decrease in the future, and may even substitute some of the trade that currently takes place by shipping (shorter supply chains).
- Railroad companies have high profit margins (25-30%) and relatively law operating expenses, making them quite resilient to inflation (which may even allow them to increase their margins by charging higher price
- Distruptive innovation and new entries are unlikely because building other rail tracks next to UP's would be expensive and would not be profitable for other companies. I also don't beilieve that any new technology (drones, self driving trucks, hyperloops or whatever...) are going to be cost competitive over rail in the foreseable future.
Based on these assumptions, the business should grow based on favourable circumstances, without a need for strong investment and huge capital expenditures, which leaves lots of cash available for dividends and buybacks.
SOME NUMBERS
- The price-earning ratio for the company is around 18, which is in line with S&P 500. Thus, if current conditions persist I can expect a long term return of AT LEAST 5% (compounded), which is roughly the amount shareholders receive annualy (dividend plus buybacks).
- The amount of dividends has increased steadely year on year (https://www.macrotrends.net/stocks/charts/UNP/union-pacific/dividend-yield-history ),
while the numbers of outstanding shares is falling down (
https://www.macrotrends.net/stocks/charts/unp/union-pacific/shares-outstanding)
- The company is becoming more and more efficent. I believe that operating expenses (employees paychecks and especially fuel costs (which accounted for 3.5bln last year) will decrease in the future, or at least grow at a slower rate than inflation, making the company even more profitable.
https://finance.yahoo.com/quote/UNP/financials?p=UNP RELEVANT RISKS
- DEBT: The management seems to be really gready, and ahs been taking on more and more debt to increase dividends and buybacks. While I believe interest payments are manageble (1.2bln last year, likely to increase in the future...) , and this gamble is likely to payoff, this is a risk to be considered.
- LOSS OF MARKET SHARE: The management seems more focused on buybacks rather than re-investing into the business, and is losing market share to its only real competitor (BNSF, hold by Berkshire Hataway). While the trend is slow, and I didn't find data on the recent developments (https://finance.yahoo.com/news/comparing-results-unp-bnsf-162040284.html, is up to 2019) I find this to be the biggest risk faced by the company. I also have a position in Berkshire (B shares, the one for the plebs), which should mitigate this specific risk.
- UNIONS AND BAD PRESS: not a huge risk IMO, salaries expenses are low, and train incidents seems to be unconsequential for the company, it could lead to problems or higher cost in the future.
CONCLUSION
I believe Union Pacific is a company that will give me good returns over the long term, and that is now fairly priced. I see a lot of things going for them, and the problems they face (loss of competitiveness/ falling market share/ rising debt) don't seem that serious. I would like to hear other opinions, things I am missing, and your take on the company.

2023.06.04 12:24 BitchesSayYes Is this silent reflux?
I am 16F and recently had a horrible bacterial infection that led to me having the worst post nasal drip ever. The mucus was super thick and I had a tough time doing any activities throughout the day and had trouble sleeping as well.
After two weeks of treatment the mucus thinned out but did not go away, and I also developed globus pharyngis.
My infection is long gone, but the symptoms remain. I have to constantly clear my throat, and everytime I eat or drink I feel like mucus almost blocking my esophagus and have trouble swallowing. This sends me into a panic attack. I already have major anxiety and depression, and this is making my life hard to deal with.
I did some research and found out acid reflux can cause both globus and mucus in throat problems. I've been having chronic gastritis since I was a kid, maybe 4 or 5?
I took mucinex, gargled with salt water, took steam, drank warm liquids and herbal tea, used nasal spray, slept inclined, etc, but the symptoms do not reduce. I keep feeling like the mucus would cause me to choke to death or something. I am already very underweight, and this is causing me to lose more weight as well.
Did more research and it seems most of my symptoms match with those suffering from silent reflux.
Any advice, remedies, meds, that worked for you guys would mean the world to me. Thank you for your time

2023.06.04 12:21 FetusEatusSeasonus So after listening to L.D. 50 again this is my ranking of the tracks (based on how much I enjoy listening to them)
- Pharmaecopia
- Under My Skin
- -1
- Dig
- Death Blooms (the godly intro heavily carries this song, the rest of the song is just enhancing and extending the experience)
- Internal Primates Forever
- the rest
I'm sure I'll open up to the rest of the tracks eventually but rn this is my list
Also isn't it strange how my top 2 consists of songs that have parts that are
heavily inspired by others lol, will make a post about this but I think most people already know what I'm talking about

2023.06.04 12:19 FartReviewer What would you do if all adults (above 18) suddently disappeared?
Iāve thought about this many times, just in case, and hereās my plan:
1-Phones will be working for just a few hours, maybe minutes, so use them wisely. Surviving alone will be impossible, so find a few trustworthy friends to live with, maybe one is enough. Among these people there should be some female friends because one day the ultimate goal will be to keep the human species alive.
2-Take my momās car, which is an automatic so I should be able to drive, and go pick these people up. During this first trip to town I should also go to get some fuel tanks and fill them up, and most importantly start getting food.
3-Find a source of food: in the first few days me and the people Iām living with will focus on getting as much food as we can from the supermarkets. However it will eventually run out, so we have to figure out a way to grow crops and hunt animals. Since I live in the countryside this shouldnāt be too hard, but still not easy at all.
4-Find a source of energy: a generator might work for the first weeks, but weāll run out of fuel. We could get some solar panels but theyāre difficult to set up, so the best option would be to get used to living without electricity.
5-Find a source of water: after weāve run out of the water from the bottles we could find, the best option would be to find a clean river and go on regular trips to get water from there
6-Get whatever could be useful: the first few days are crucial not only for the food and resources, but also for everything that we might need. Tools and weapons are the most important items we will probably need
7-Try to survive for the first 10-15 years: after that most kids will have probably died and most teenagers will have probably become adults. Survivors will start to go back to the cities and start meeting each other to try to decide what to do. The strongest people will try to form some sort of governments to rule on the communities, but in many places there will be revolutions and chaos
8-Ultimately some communities will survive and start to form some sort of society with the knowledge they have, they will start having kids and after many generations there will be a new human civilisation based on what they found on books

2023.06.04 12:11 Thick_Mick_Chick Windows to the Soul:Shiloh's Final Battle
It'd been a busy week. She'd practically begged the clock to go faster at work this afternoon, knowing full well she had the weekend off. Being a police dispatcher? You needed those "mental health breaks" that so many sing virtues about. It'd been a rough mental health week, for sure.
Tish recognized the number on the caller I.D. lt was Ol Shiloh. He'd been a paratrooper in Vietnam, and he came back stateside without so much of a scratch on him physically. Mentally? He saw "gooks" (Ol Shiloh's completely politically incorrect term for the Viet Cong as well as the eponymous Charlie) at the bottom of the basement stairs and in the shower waiting for him to enter the bathroom. As a little girl, Tish knew Ol Shiloh had a good heart but a feeble mind. His visual and auditory hallucinations made him the laughing stock of many of Eerie's child residents who pointed, snickered, and rolled their finger at the side of their temple, indicating he was crazier than a shithouse rat. Ol Shiloh sounded legitimately scared when he called, though. This was not an emotion Tish was familiar with. Nothing rattled Ol Shiloh even with his advanced case of post-traumatic stress disorder. He'd known Tish's parents, and? Oddities aside? Ol Shiloh was a good man. So? Speaking to him had never presented a challenge until today, and, Oh, what a challenge it was...
"Eerie 911. Will this be police, fire, or medical?" Tish had picked up on the 2nd ring. "Ginny? Ginny Lynn? Is that you? " The normally loquacious Shiloh queried. "Shiloh? Hey! Is everything okay?" Tish inquired. Tish was the nickname given to her by her boyfriend, Craig, who Ginny never called by that name. His nickname was Gomez. They were the local Halloween decorating contest champions and adored everything scary, thus the nicknames given to each: Gomez and Morticia from Addams family fame. "Naw, Ginny girl. Ain't okay at all." Ol Shiloh was not himself. "What's happening?" Tish's mounting concern was palpable. "Nothing right now. It was last night." Ol Shiloh spoke, barely above a whisper. Remaining ever so patient, Tish replied, "What happened last night, Shiloh? You don't sound like yourself, and it's worrying me." "Ginny, don't you worry your pretty lil head about me. Harry & Virginia did a fine job raising you. Guess it didn't take in your lil sister, considering she turned out to be the town doorknob. Everybody's had a turn at that girl." Granted, Ol Shiloh was never known to mince his words, but this was strong even for him. What was even worse? He wasn't wrong. Time to get him reigned back in. "Well, I don't think you called to talk to me about my sister's promiscuity. What's going on with you, Shiloh?" Tish was sensing his reluctance to just "spit it out. " It was as if he was having 2nd thoughts about placing the call to begin with. "I had visitors last night." Shiloh barely spoke above a whisper. "Visitors?" Tish queried. Ol Shiloh never had visitors. Hell, he'd been living all by himself every sense Rose died. His saintly wife was married to him 50 years, only a month before she passed away from a fatal heart attack. To say Ol Shiloh was lost? That was an understatement. Shiloh was nothing without Rose. He met her in August of 68, right after he came back stateside from Vietnam in May of that same year. It was love at 1st sight for Ol Shiloh, but Rose needed convincing. She mistakenly thought Shiloh was "a Mama's boy" because he worshipped the ground Rose walked on. He was not. He was simply in love for the 1st and last time. Tish was really surprised with how well Ol Shiloh was able to pull through the 2nd roughest time in his life with the aid of Eerie's townsfolk. And? As Elton John famously quoted? When it comes to Ol Shiloh? I'm still standing. This? This was different. This was not the Shiloh she'd known for the last 53 years of her life. "Ginny, they were kids. Well, they looked like kids, but..." Ol Shiloh trailed off. He shut down again. "Looked like kids? What made you think they weren't kids, Shiloh?" Tish was nervous and ancy. This felt wrong. Something was off. "There were 2 of them. A boy, dark hair, pale skin, and probably about 12 years old. He had a lil girl with him about 7, also dark hair & pale skin." Shiloh was intrepid. Tish quietly listened as Gomez and some of the other deputies were laughing in the office behind her. She gave them a scornful look, and the guys piped down. "They'd knocked at my front door about an hour after the sun went down. I didn't have the porch light on. The screen door was shut and locked, but the wooden door was open. I turned the porch light on so I could see them better. They were both looking down at their feet. The boy whispered something but I couldn't hear, so I asked him to speak up," Shiloh let the flood gates burst forward. "Sir? May we use your phone? We've gotten lost and are scared. We need to call our mother. Please, let us in." The dark-haired boy requested. "I've not seen you kids around here before in my life. Who's your parents?" Shiloh knew everyone in Eerie, Indiana, but he'd never seen these odd looking kids. "Sir? Please, let us in. We need to call our mother. She'll be so worried." The dark-haired boy practically recited word for word what he'd already previously said, which really riled Shiloh up. "Boy, you deaf?", I asked, "Who's your folks?" Shiloh continued to give Tish the play by play. "Sir? Please. We are cold. We are hungry and we are scared. Please, let us in." The dark-haired boy sounded rehearsed and mechanical. "NO! There's something not right here." Ol Shiloh didn't survive a hot tour in the jungle because he didn't have good instincts. "Sir, please, if you could just let us in." The little dark-haired girl then chimed in. Ol Shiloh knew instinctively not to trust these 2 but found himself being drawn to them paradoxically. His hand reached for the storm door to open it even though every fiber in his being told him not to. "What the hell are you kids cause you ain't human?!" Ol Shiloh was more nervous now than when he was a tunnel rat. Both children looked up and to Shiloh simultaneously. What he saw scared him worse than any night he'd spent in jungle. Their eyes were black, not just the pupil. The Iris, cornea, and pupil were all black but not just any black. The deepest black, pure obsidian. The answers to all of the galaxy's most burning questions were in those pitch black bottomless depth eyes. "Shiloh Svengaard, let us IN!" both children stared into Shiloh's pale milky blue eyes as he stared back into their black ones. "NO. NO, NOW GO AWAY!" Shiloh slammed the wooden door and locked it. He watched as the black eyed children walked to the end of his driveway and onto James Dean Boulevard. They went off into the night and Ol Shiloh didn't see them anymore. "So, you thought they'd return?" Tish was a tad overwhelmed. Ol Shiloh had audio and visual hallucinations but it was always fellow soldiers, the Viet Cong or the North Vietnamese Army. It sure as hell wasn't black eyed tweens. "Ginny girl, I don't think they'll return. I know it. They're coming for me. I know they are." Delusions of persecution certainly isn't anything new to Tish when it came to Ol Shiloh but this was different. Shiloh was full of doubt and self defeat. Never in his life had Ol Shiloh backed down from a fight. This? This was uncharted territory. "Want Don to swing by on patrol tonight? Craig and I are having a lil evening out so he won't be on. Don would be glad to do it, Shiloh. Really." Comforting and reassuring Ol Shiloh was Tish's main concern at the moment. "Yeah, Ginny Girl. Have Don cruise by my place if he would. Maybe a patrol car will keep these evil fucking little bastards away from me and my house. Best part of those lil sons a bitches dripped down their Mama's leg when she was getting pregnant with 'em!" Ol Shiloh always had a way with words. "Okay. I'll tell him but remember to use the non emergency line next time, Shiloh. Can't tie 911 up with non emergent calls." Tish gently scolded. "Fuck that non emergency number, Ginny girl! It prompts me to press 1 for English and 2 for the ESPENOIL (pronounced ESPN OIL) and bullshit! I just call 911 and get ahold of you!" Shiloh wasn't about to call an automated line. That just wasn't how he did things. Tish was the one that could handle his problems. She was the good sister. "Okay, okay, Shiloh. I'll tell Don. You just take it from me. Rose wouldn't want to see you like this." Tish was truly concerned. "Ginny girl, my Rosie can't see anything anymore." And with that? He hung up the phone. The guys were still hanging out in the office, albeit much quieter. "Sorry 'bout that. We didn't know you were on the phone. We wouldn't have been telling jokes if we knew you were on the phone." Gomez sheepishly looked down at the table where he was seated with 2 other deputies, Don & Bubba. "It wouldn't have mattered. Ol Shiloh was ranting so much he didn't even hear you guys." Tish dismissed. "Ol Shiloh? What put a hair across his ass?" Don asked. "He said 2 kids came by last night about an hour after dark, wanting to be let in the house. He was uncharacteristically afraid. He said they just kept repeating to let them in so they could call their mother. He felt something was off, something wasn't right." Tish trailed off. "Kids? Whose kids?" Gomez spoke up. "He didn't know. He even asked the kids who their parents were but they just kept asking to come in the house." Tish replied. "Anyway, he said when he really got scared was when both kids looked up at him and their eyes were black. Their eyes were completely black." Tish kept relaying everything Ol Shiloh told her. Gomez, Don & Bubba looked at her as if she'd grown a 2nd head. "I'm just telling you what he said." Tish defended. "When he saw those black eyes? He panicked, slammed and locked the wooden door and told them to go away. They did." Tish finished. "So what does Lt. Dan want us to do with a couple of kids with colored contacts pranking the local crazy Vietnam Vet?" Don sighed. "I offered for you to swing by his place on patrol tonight. He was pleased with that." Tish informed. "FFS. Fine. Bubba and I can swing by a few times tonight as long as it shuts that old crazy bastard up." Don resigned to his fate. "You know, Don? No one will ever accuse you of being too caring." Tish just rolled her eyes. "BTW? What was the joke you guys were laughing at?" Tish suddenly remembered. "There was a young Indian warrior who asked the tribe's chief one day how he decided on all of the babies' names when they were born since he was given the honor of naming all of the children"... Bubba began. "He said, "My son, if there is an eagle flying over when a child is being born? I call that child Eagle Flying Over. If there is snow gently falling when a child is being born? I call that child Snow Gently Falling, but tell me, Two Dogs Fucking, why do you ask?" Bubba finished to a 2nd round of uproarious laughter. "For Christ's sake, Bubba. You ain't got a lick of sense!" Gomez wiped a tear of laughter from his eye and proceeded to leave he and Don in charge while he and Tish left for the day.
They got into the SUV and headed towards the Blue Bayou Creole restaurant. Most quaint and quirky hometowns have that one little restaurant everyone loves. The Blue Bayou was Eerie, Indiana's version. The seafood buffet on Friday nights were always a hit. As much as Tish & Gomez were home bodies? They did enjoy an occasional night at the Blue Bayou.
Bubba and Don drank coffee and told more dirty jokes. Swinging by Ol Shiloh's place a few times tonight will help break up the monotony. Poor ol bastard didn't mean any harm. He was just messed up in the head. Kids with all black eyes? What the hell was that all about, anyway?
Ol Shiloh really wanted to believe Tish. He really did. He knew, deep down inside, if Ginny, Craig and the boys at Eerie PD couldn't help him? No one could. Well, he has his shot gun on the rack, but who would threaten to shoot children? He saw enough of that shit cleaning out villages of their denizens back in jungle. He never intended to live that kind of hell, again. Strange looking kids or not, they still at least looked like kids. He just couldn't bring himself to shoot a child.
He was nodding off in his recliner. The sun was dipping below the horizon.
Tish & Gomez sat and ate and caught up with the day's activities. "Ol Shiloh was really that scared, huh?" Gomez asked Tish in a low voice so others couldn't overhear. "Yeah. Yeah, he was. It was unsettling." Tish was clearly still bothered. "I'll remind Don later on tonight when I check in, I promise." Gomez reassured. "Please, do. I've never heard fear in his voice before. It's really got me shook." Tish slowly relaxed and let the stress melt away as she took another spoonful of gumbo. "Consider it done." Gomez smiled and began eating as well.
Was it a knock? He couldn't be sure. The house was dark but Shiloh knew his own home. He slowly got up from the recliner and proceeded to the door. Could it be? He hoped not. Even as much as he knew those little demons were going to return? He had really hoped he'd be wrong. One quick look through the glass of the wooden door proved he was not. There they were: same dark-haired pale boy and girl but there was something different this time. There was a 3rd party out there but the darkness prevented him from making out who it was. This 3rd party was taller and bigger, clearly an adult but that was the only clear thing.
"Please, Shiloh, let us in. We're cold. We're hungry. Our mother is worried." Both children said in unison. The 3rd party waited in the wings. "I don't know you little mother fuckers so how did you know my name?" Shiloh raged. He was still scared but more angry now.
"Rosie told us." Both children simultaneously chirped happily.
Wait, what? Rosie? Rosie as in my Rosie? The Rosie I cruelly lost just 4 January's ago? "ROSIE? What the hell you mean Rosie?" Ol Shiloh thought that he'd lost what little mind he had left. Just then? Something happened that flipped Ol Shiloh's world upside down.
"Shiloh Shenandoah? Is that you, my love?" Rosie. It was Rosie. Bigger than shit, it was his beloved wife of over 50 years. How, though? It couldn't be. He saw her on the slab in the morgue when he had to identify her. It couldn't be. She was 4 years in the ground! Yet, there she stood behind the black eyed children looking at him with the same set of obsidian black eyes.
"Rosie? That can't be you. You died a month after our 50th wedding anniversary! You've been gone 4 years!" Ol Shiloh's mind was reeling and he didn't know what to do.
"Don't you love me, anymore, my dear? I thought you'd be so happy to see me." Rosie smiled a smile that would have otherwise been beautiful if it weren't sitting below 2 pitch black eyes.
"Don't ask silly questions, Rosie. You're the only one for me. You always have been. You always will be." Shiloh was opening the screen door. The dark-haired pale children grabbed the storm door from the other side and pulled, Rosie with her sinister grin and black eyes moved forward.
"Let us in, Shiloh." The children and Rosie crossed the threshold and, immediately afterwards? Shiloh let out a scream coming from the death throws. As painful as it was? At least the ripping out of his throat by the children's mouths was, mercifully, quick.
"Bubba! You are one redneck, peckerwood cracker!" Don rolled his eyes as he drove along at a steady pace patrolling. "You know I'm right! You just don't want to admit it!" Bubba was getting equally irritated with Don in his response. Don's wife, Allison, was, indeed, Tish's little sister. She was also "the town doorknob" as Old Shiloh not so eloquently called her. She was well known to everyone as Eerie's town slut even though she married Don 10 years ago. Guess it's true what the song says, you can't turn a ho into a housewife.
"Dude, I know you love her but she's always gonna be the town whore, Man" Bubba tried backpedaling at least some.
"Will you shut up? Will you just shut the fuck up? I'm tired of hearing this shit!" Don lost it and blew up on Bubba. Bubba, in turn, shut down and stopped speaking.
They rolled onto James Dean Boulevard and proceeded to Ol Shiloh's place. It was dark, lonely and isolated. Shiloh was never one for neighbors, but something seemed even more off. Something just didn't seem right. Isn't that what Tish described earlier when Shiloh spoke to her on the phone? She said she heard fear. They'd never known Ol Shiloh to be fearful. Today? All of that changed.
Don & Bubba slowly crept up Shiloh's long driveway. Don tried rolling the spotlight on the cruiser up onto Shiloh's front porch. It was still a weak beam of light but was getting brighter. "What the fuck?" Don hit the brakes. "What is it?" Bubba looked at Don like he was absolutely crazy. "The door is open. Actually? Both of them are." Don shone the spotlight onto the open screen and wooden doors. They could tell both doors were open but could see nothing else due to the darkness.
"I don't like this, Bubba." Don was intrepid and softly pressed on the accelerator.
"Don, should we call Tish & Gomez? I mean, I know it's their night out but..." Bubba trailed off.
They sat in the driveway next to Ol Shiloh's porch. Other than both front doors being open? They couldn't see a thing.
Don and Bubba slowly approached the porch, guns drawn. It was dark but something was lying just inside the open front doors. As they advanced? It was boots. Jump boots that had a high polish shine. Those boots were connected to legs. Shiloh's legs.
"Jesus Christ, call for a bus!" Don yelled for Bubba to radio in for an ambulance.
Shiloh laid at the entrance to his home, flat on his back, staring with dead cold wide open eyes straight to and through the ceiling. A look of abject horror plastered all over his face. His throat was ripped out almost to his spinal cord.
"Oh, God, I'm gonna puke!" Bubba ran back outside where the evening's coffee went all over the sidewalk.
"Call the coroner, too. This is gonna be a God damn circus!" Don didn't attempt to get a pulse considering Shiloh's carotid arteries and jugular veins had been viciously ripped out.
Bubba wiped his mouth and started calling all of the necessary people. Don stood next to Shiloh with his hands holding his head in disbelief.
"Our 1st kill was a success." The dark-haired pale boy said to the creature that looked like Rosie.
"It was this time. We must improve. We must refine. If we don't evolve? We wither and die. What would the point be to just stop at the 1st kill? The colony could never advance if we never pursued other avenues to further our agenda." The creature that looked like Rosie opined.
The dark-haired pale boy and girl nodded in sync with everything the creature that looked like Rosie said. Is this how their occupation of Terra was really going to commence? Given everything the Alliance taught them? They thought the humans would be more violent and aggressive. Perhaps? The distant study of the Terrestrials proved incorrect in practice in comparison to theory. Perhaps the Terrestrials will gladly cease resistance when they realize just how futile it will be.

2023.06.04 12:10 nagasravika_1991 40/52 The Seven Moons of Maali Almeida by Shehan Karunatilaka - Loved it!
Rating : 5/5
Mr. Shehan weaved a mesmerizing tale that is simply superb and awesome. I was half way through the book and already making plans to read it one more time!!
He gave a light hearted touch to the most gorical elements of war, death, loss and injustice. I didn't even cringe and feel obnoxious about the references of homosexual relationships the main character gets into. This story makes one reconsider and reimage their notions of what makes life worth while and wholesome. Why should we waste a life that is blessed to be had by indulging in wastefulness of war and power craving. Loved it through and through!!
He paints a scary picture of Sri Lanka which has race based and faction based wars where innocents are sacrificed for things they have no connection to. It gave a sorrowful impression that perhaps the most condemned souls become victims of such unfair countries from which escape is not easy! I would be afraid to ever become a SriLankan under-privileged citizen post reading this book. It must be hard to suffer torture and discrimination at the hands of powerful men who couldn't care less for anything other than their self serving ideals.
Coming to the story, we have a gutsy war photographer Maali Almeida killed in some mysterious circumstances and entering an afterlife. The plot unravels with investigation going into his disappearance which his spirit follows through. It is interlaced with his memories from the past .. life which he had lead till his death. He has seven moons (days) before which he can enter the Light - which marks the passage into next life.
He strives these seven moons - like a lost and dedicated soul - to find how he died, bring some of his photos to light so that a war torn, god forsaken country Sri Lanka becomes more peaceful, to help his friends in their quest for justice in his death. He soon finds and accepts the fact that there are stronger forces like karma which subterfuge his plans and that he cannot control the outcomes but can only watch what happens 'down there'.
Through very detailed involvement in many shady transactions with the government and different underdog organizations, he is brought to life. I sometimes even wondered if Maali is not a real person and if I am perhaps not reading a biographical work rather than fiction!

2023.06.04 12:08 Hauwnted I think I broke something...
2023.06.04 12:07 Isanatogami [PC] [Late 90s-Early 2000s] 2D top down car shooter
Platform(s): PC (Windows 98)
Genre: Racing, combat
Estimated year of release: Late 90s-early 2000s
Graphics/art style: It's a 2D top down car shooter. The player controls a red sporty looking car, that can fire a fire-looking projectile to the right, so it can damage the opponents. The opponents can shoot back, and their projectiles were gray. Before the first level starts, there's a bio/lore of sorts about the opponents that the player will face on that level, and their cars will rotate while the player reads the briefing with a bombastic orchestral soundtrack. The first level was a green and peaceful landscape, aside from the asphalt lanes on the middle so the cars can race and shoot at each other. The second level had a brown landscape, and I never passed this level.
Notable characters: One of the opponents on the first level is a race car that greatly resembled (or using the asset) of GTA London's
Ferocious 312. On the second level, the main target is a brown buggy, and the other opponents were large blue road rollers.
Notable gameplay mechanics: Aside from arrow keys to turn left and right, Shift is used to fire the weapon where enemy cars would require multiple hits to be destroyed while the player's own car could only withstand one shot before blowing up. This one is a bit fuzzy, but I think Ctrl is used as an oil slick that would cause enemies to either spin around (if they're non targets such as the road rollers on the second level) or outright explode (if they're primary targets such as other racers on the first level)
Other details: I played this game on a shovelware CD compilation (there were other games such as some Putt-Putt titles and Jazz Jackrabbit). I think this game's title in the compilation was "Car Wars", but I can't found that exact game by Googling.

2023.06.04 12:06 ASHKVLT I hate LinkedIn
So the other day I made the mistake of reading linked in comments. I got the whole "gen z buy Iphone so they poor" argument wich is fucking asanine, how many people actually buy a new I phone or whatever as opposed to getting a contract, finance or refurbished? I'm willing to bet not many. But I say I should be able to buy an Iphone or whatever not worry about how my £50 a month contract is actually too expensive. People should be able to have nice things when they are young, I don't understand why anyone is not for that, well I know why it would mean fair wages and things like rent control and the poor business owners just can't afford to loose like %5 profit in exchange for increased worker retention, mental health, satisfaction and productivity.
Then there was the whole "gen z just don't have the skills" yeh motherfucker why don't you have actual graduate programs, it means a more productive workforce on the whole, higher employment and better mental health. Oh shit I forgot, it might mean loosing 0.1% of growth in the short term and less people to bully into 0hr contracts how will massive companies worth hundreds of millions cope without slaves?
The whole "gen z want it all, they want a fulfilling job that pays well" is that sooo much to ask motherfucker? Honestly? I want to make impulse purchases and have nice things without working weekends, like the fuckers I'm ranting about.
Honestly the fact these people exist if fucking horrendous. And they are the ones making decisions? Holy shit. For a lot of people the only meaning they can find in their lives is having nice shit, the job sucks, boss sucks and you have to go e a massive portion of your money to a rich corporation that owns your house, knowing the current system is flushing away your future and everyone else's for a 1% rise in GDP. So what's left is to consume, you can buy Funko pops, Warhammer 40k or AOS, bad dragons, comics, manga, a car and so on. It's kind of like religion being the opiate of the people, you don't start taking Morphine (normally) and you don't become addicted if everything is fine. But it's getting to the point where even that is becoming inaccessible to soo many, then what? What do people do when they can't have their drugs, there plastic crack and silicone smack? I don't think they will actually understand the root of their dissatisfaction is the capitalist system unless people adjutate and sperad class consciousness, kind of as lennin said.
Idk I'm venting

2023.06.04 11:57 AFAgow13 Golem night witch meta incoming.
2023.06.04 11:56 DragonWisper56 I got board and decided to covert some races from changeling the dreaming to m&m
Tldr: I was looking at some races for a different game and decided to put them in mutants and masterminds. Have a look. So I was reading through some stuff on the old world of darkness at the same time as Iām going through the mutants and masterminds gmās guide and I thought It would be cool to stat up some of the splats as templates. Specifically the various kiths for changing the dreaming because I think I can get them under 15 power points. So without further adieu let's get into it
So for you who donāt know, CTD is a game about playing fae(who in this universe are personifications of dreams) who have been stranded on earth in mortal guise trying to survive the death of imagination.
Now this just scratches the surface so I'll leave a link to the fandom down below but hereās what we're here to discuss: the kiths. In changeling games these are the races that you pick at character creation and determine your abilities each represent the dream that your changeling was born from.
quick note these wonāt be exactly rules accurate(to changeling) because that would be really tedious Iām just trying to get the general vibe for each power
#1 Boggans: house fae, these little hobbit looking guys represent dreams of comfort and home.
Craftwork: quickness 4 limited(only when not seen by non boggans); enhanced advantage skill mastery( expertise of players choice) 3 points
Social dynamics: mind reading 2 limited(only to tell relationships) [role required optional] 3 [2] points
Good with people: enhanced advantage skill mastery(insight) [not in the book but felt like it belonged) 1 point
Complication: call of the needy:needs to make a will save(set by dm) not to help people who ask for it(excluding swore enemies)
#2 Eshu: born from mortal stories and the wonder of travel, these fae are always ready to go on an adventure.
Spirit pathways: immunity 5 (getting lost) feature 1(always right place, right time) [I have no idea if this is accurate because I canāt find their stats anywhere. But itās cool so weāre leaving it in) 6 points
Storyteller: enhanced advantage 2 ( skill mastery deception and expertise storytelling) 2 points.
Complication: reckless: exactly what it says on the tin but magically induced.
#3 Knocker: born from dreams of invention these foul mouthed craftsmen create wonders from dreams.
Master craftsman: enhanced advantage(skill focus technology and intimidate), artificer. 3 points
Fix-it: feature(can repair jury rig a piece of technology with intimidate [by threatening it] 1 point
Forge chimera: (honestly this power is pretty worthless so iām just going to give you an array) gadgets array 4(base power) with two alternate effects. [if your using the dream being complication below this doesnāt work on mortals if you donāt use extra effort] 6 points
Complication: flaw: everything a Knocker makes inevitable has some kind of minor flaw that can never be fixed. Not only does this inconvenience these craftsmen but it annoys them to no end of being sighted as the reason for their bad attitude.
#4
Redcap: the children of violent and savage dreams these fairies constantly eat and are never satisfied.
Dark appetites: strength based damage 1 (flavor bite attack), 1 point [maybe subject to glamor cost complication below.)
Deadly bite: enhanced advantage(bite attack) 1 point
Scary: enhanced advantage(skill mastery intimidate) 1 point
Bully browbeat:perception ranged affliction 2 resisted and overcome by will (entranced, compelled, controlled) sense dependent(hearing) Limited (chimera[dream monsters]) 4 points
Complications
Bad attitude: no one likes redcaps, even other redcaps.
# 5
Trolls: born from dreams of honor and duty, these giants are defined by the oaths they carry.
Titans strength: enhanced strength 2, enhanced stamina 2[may be subject to dream being complicated. unless you use extra effort it wonāt work around humans] 4 points
Stubborn: immunity(interaction effects) limited to half 3 points
Vigilant sentinel: enhanced advantage(skill mastery athletics, perception)
Complications
Bond of duty: should a troll renegade on their oath the dreaming will lash out and deprive them of their titans strength until they atone.
Rage: if a troll is betrayed they feel an intense rage often unexpected due to their typically quiet nature.
# 6
Slaugh: born from the fears of what goes bump in the night, these Adams family lookalikes inhabit the dark and cramped spaces of the world and know many secrets.
Squirm: insubstantial 1 role required 4 points
Perceptive sulker: enhanced advantage(skill mastery stealth and perception) 2 points
Sharpened senses: senses 3 (detect ghost 2 (sight and hearing) 4 points (could add extended hearing but they're already expensive as heckl.) 3 points
Gross munchies: immunity 1(spoiled food) 1 point
Complication: curse of silence: due to ancient punishments for crimes long since passed the underfolk can not raise their voice above a whisper.(this would be so hard to role play lol)
# 7
pooka: born from the stories of animal tricksters, for every lie these pranksters fae tell there is a truth, and vice versa.
Shapchange: morph 1(meta morph 1) quirk 1(canāt transform while people are looking) quirk 3(no objects change with you)[this is a animal form that each pooka can turn into] 2 points
Author's note: okay I kinda of ran into a problem that a lot of animals are higher pl than 1. So if you're playing a character of a lower pl than what you turn into just build it to your cap and justify it as your young or not used to your bestial form yet.
Confidant: favored foe(people who confide in them[need that sweet bonus to interaction skills])
Manipulative: enhanced advantage(skill mastery deception and insight)
Complication: Lies: in everything but the shortest of phrases pooka must mix in a lie. They may try to resist with a will save(set by dm) in which case they may tell the truth for a number of minutes per degree of success.
# 8
sidhe: born from dreams of royalty, these inhumanly beautiful fae rule changeling society.
Inhumanly beautiful: enhanced presence 2; 4 points
Awe and beauty: sustained reaction[always attack] affliction resided and overcome by will (entranced, defenseless) limited to two degrees 6 points
Noble bearing: feature 1(no spell can ever embarrass a sidhe)
Complication: Weakness: banalityās curse: sidhe are not of this world and as such are more vulnerable to its dangers(changelings can die from being around boring people in the lore. I get the theme but itās pretty silly. For a more appropriate complication for a m&m game just give them pride or something.)
Lastly, just because I think they're neat, here's one of the kiths introduced in the 20th anniversary edition.
# 9 Sachamama: inspired by dreams of lounging pythons, the only thing that interests the serpentine fae more than food is gossip.
Snake skinned: morph 1(snake form) removable -1 ( as the grow in levels many will use metamorph to gain an additional snake form which trades magic for more combat oriented stats for when strength is required over cunning.) 4 points
Keen observers: senses ? extended hearing 1, extended vision 1, counters illusions, danger sense (hearing)
Snake tail: sachamama can turn their legs into tails at will. Movement 2 slithering 2 2 points.
Authorās note: because of their expensive nature they typically wonāt have all defenses at pl at pl 1. Sachamama generally forsake dodge if forced to choose.
Complication: Gorging: the snake fae have to eat twice as much as normal in order to stay healthy and are clumsy in the hours after a big meal.
The calling: once a year a Sachamama hunger grows to immense heights and over the course of a day or two must eat 500 pounds of meat. Some retreat to the jungles to sate their passions, others make legendary runs to the market, and a select few use it as a chance to satisfy darker hungers.
Universal complications:
Glamor cost: changelings must expend glamor(collected human whimsy) to cast spells. Treat this in the same way you would ammo for guns.
Dream being: changeling magic is derived from dreams and as such has difficulties affecting the human world. Personally If you're including this in m&m donāt use this because it makes changelings practically useless but if you do treat all spells(not included because not all of them know spells) as check required unless they use extra effort in which case they can use it for the rest of the scene unhindered.
